Jos, Plateau State capital is on fire following the declaration of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) by the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), as President elect.

INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmoud Yakubu, had early Wednesday morning declared results of last Saturday election with the APC flagbearer emerging victorious.

The protesters, who were speaking in Hausa, trooped to major roads shouting, ‘Nagode Allah, Tinubu can never be our President.’

Anambra: Ogbaru Returns Ogene To House of Reps

Victor Ogene, Labour Party, LP candidate has won the election for the Ogbaru, Anambra state Federal Constituency. Ogene, a veteran journalist and former Editor of The Source magazine defeated the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, and People’s Democratic Party, PDP, candidates in the February 25 election.

With the declaration of Ogene, a former member of the House of Representatives as winner of the election, calm has now returned to Ogbaru following the initial apprehension due to the delay by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC in announcing the result of the election.

The LP had raised alarm on Monday over the delay by the electoral umpire to announce the winner more than 48 hours after the election had been concluded.

By that time, Ogene was already leading Arinzechukwu Awogu of APGA, and Chukwuka Onyema of the PDP his closest rivals with over 1500 votes.

Not a few members of the Ogbaru community informed the magazine that they are happy that Ogene has now been returned to the House of Representatives because they believe that he will give them quality representation in the nation’s Upper House.

“I appeal to my fellow contestants to come together and let us team up and work together and build this nation together.

“We must work for the unity, happiness and harmony of Nigeria. We must not act like that of Keshra that has no direction of a conductor. We have elected a conductor named President- Elect, let’s collaborate and create that symphony for composer music to move forward. We have what it takes and what is needed.

“The knowledge, creativity, the mind and we are the same country performing wonders in the same country. I promise to work with you to make Nigeria a place of destination where people can contribute to the development of the nation.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu

By Asiwaju Bola Tinubu  (President-Elect Federal Republic of Nigeria)

My Fellow Nigerians,

I am profoundly humbled that you have elected me to serve as the 16th president of our beloved republic. This is a shining moment in the life of any man and affirmation of our democratic existence. From my heart, I say thank you.

Whether you are Batified, Atikulated, Obidient, Kwankwasiyya, or have any other political affiliation, you voted for a better, more hopeful nation and I thank you for your participation and dedication to our democracy.

You decided to place your trust in the democratic vision of a Nigeria founded on shared prosperity and one nurtured by the ideals of unity, justice, peace and tolerance. Renewed hope has dawned in Nigeria.

We commend INEC for running a free and fair election. The lapses that did occur were relatively few in number and were immaterial to the final outcome.  With each cycle of elections, we steadily perfect this process so vital to our democratic life.

Today, Nigeria stands tall as the giant of Africa. It shines even brighter as the continent’s biggest democracy.

I thank all who supported my campaign. From President Buhari who adeptly led my campaign as its chairman, to my Vice Presidential Candidate, Senator Kashim Shettima.

To the progressive Governors of our party and this nation, to the party leadership, to our loyal party members. I owe you a debt of gratitude. To the entire campaign organization, I thank you sincerely.

I thank my loving wife and dear family whose support was ceaseless and inspiring. Without you, this victory would not be possible.

I am grateful to Almighty God. By His mercy, I was born a son of Nigeria and through His sublime purpose I find myself the victor of this election. May He grant me the wisdom and courage to lead the nation to the greatness He alone has destined for it.

Finally, I thank the Nigerian people for their abiding belief in our democracy. I shall be a fair leader to all Nigerians. I will be in tune with your aspirations, charge up your energies and harness your talents to deliver a nation that we can be proud of.

To my fellow candidates, former VP Atiku, former Governor Kwankwaso, former Governor Obi and all others, I extend the hand of friendship. This was a competitive, high-spirited campaign.

You have my utmost respect.

Political competition must now give way to political conciliation and inclusive governance.

During the election, you may have been my opponent but you were never my enemy.  In my heart, you are my brothers.

Still, I know some candidates will be hard put to accept the election results. It is your right to seek legal recourse. What is neither right nor defensible is for anybody to resort to violence. Any challenge to the electoral outcome should be made in a court of law, and not in the streets.

I also ask my supporters to let peace reign and tensions fade. We ran a principled, peaceful and progressive campaign. The aftermath of our campaign must be as benign.

Yes, there are divisions amongst us that should not exist. Many people are uncertain, angry and hurt; I reach out to every one of you. Let the better aspects of our humanity step forward at this fateful moment. Let us begin to heal and bring calm to our nation.

Now, to you, the young people of this country, I hear you loud and clear. I understand your pains, your yearnings for good governance, a functional economy and a safe nation that protects you and your future.

I am aware that for many of you Nigeria has become a place of abiding challenges limiting your ability to see a bright future for yourselves.

Remodeling our precious national home requires the harmonious efforts of all of us, especially the youth. Working together, we shall move this nation as never before.

My running mate, Vice President-elect Shettima and I understand the challenges ahead. More importantly, we also understand and deeply value the talent and innate goodness of you, the Nigerian people. We pledge to listen and to do the difficult things, the big deeds, that put us on the path of irreversible progress. Hold us firmly to account, but please give us a chance first.

Together, we shall build a brighter and more productive society for today, tomorrow and for years to come.

Today, you have given me the greatest honor you can bestow on one man.

In return, I will give you my utmost as your next president and commander-in-chief. Peace, unity and prosperity shall be the cornerstones of the society we intend to build. When you gaze upon what we shall accomplish in the coming years, you shall speak with pride at being a Nigerian.

I thank you all.

God bless you all.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Best Person For The Job Has Emerged – President Buhari, Congratulates Tinubu

Tinubu and Buhari

By Ayodele Oni

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for emerging winner of the presidential election concluded early Wednesday.

Tinubu, who is of the same All Progressives Congress (APC) as President Buhari, won the election by polling 8,794,726 votes as against 6,984,520 by his closest rival, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

President Buhari described President-elect Tinubu as the “best person for the job”, pledging to work with him and his team to ensure an orderly handover of power.

A statement by a presidential spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu quoted President Buhari as saying: “I congratulate His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his victory. Elected by the people, he is the best person for the job. I shall now work with him and his team to ensure an orderly handover of power.

“The election was Africa’s largest democratic exercise. In a region that has undergone backsliding and military coups in recent years, this election demonstrates democracy’s continued relevance and capability to deliver for the people it serves.

“Within Nigeria, the results reveal democracy’s ripening in our country. Never has the electoral map shifted so drastically in one cycle.

“In the presidential elections, states in all regions across the nation changed colour. Some amongst you may have noticed my home state amongst them.

“The winning candidate did not carry his own home state either. That happens during a competitive election. Votes and those that cast them cannot be taken for granted.

“Each must be earned. Competition is good for our democracy. There is no doubt the people’s decision has been rendered in the results we look at today.

“That is not to say the exercise was without fault. For instance, there were technical problems with electronic transmission of the results.

“Of course, there will be areas that need work to bring further transparency and credibility to the voting procedure. However, none of the issues registered represent a challenge to the freeness and fairness of the elections.

“I know some politicians and candidates may not agree with this view. That too is fine. If any candidate believes they can prove the fraud they claim is committed against them, then bring forward the evidence.

“If they cannot, then we must conclude that the election was indeed the people’s will – no matter how hard that may be for the losers to accept. If they feel the need to challenge, please take it to the courts, not to the streets.

“However, to do the latter means they are not doing it in the interest of the people, but rather to inflame, to put people in harm’s way and all for personal, selfish gains.

“After a degree of polarization that necessarily accompanies any election, it is now time to come together and act responsibly.

“I call on all candidates to remember the peace pledge they signed just days before the election. Do not undermine the credibility of INEC. Let us now move forward as one. The people have spoken.”

Spurious Social Media Post: We Didn’t Give Money to any Politician – GTBank

0

Guaranty Trust Bank Limited, a sister company to Guarantee Trust Company, GTCO Plc has denied the allegation that it gave N500 million to Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to help him contest the February 25 election.

There were suggestions that the commercial bank acted on the order of President Muhammadu Buhari go give the ruling party candidate N500 million cash on the eve of the election.

But the bank said in a statement that the report should be disregarded because it’s false.
The Miriam Olusanya-led bank particularly urged it’s customers to ignore a Twitter user, @ifygold21 who made the the allegation on his twiter handle that the bank released the money to Tinubu during the naira scarcity.

Such comments, the bank said are capable of inciting Nigerians against the commercial bank, adding that the bank had during investigation discovered that the post was posted on the microblogging site by a faceless person.

The statement read, “The attention of Guaranty Trust Bank Ltd (the “Bank”) has been drawn to a spurious post on Twitter by @ ifygold21 alleging that the Bank gave the new Naira notes in the total sum of ₦500 million to one of the leading presidential candidates in the ongoing General Elections on the eve of the elections and at the order of a high-ranking Government official.

“The Bank wishes to refute this claim in its entirety and state categorically that it is completely false and is designed to bring the image of the Bank and its officers to disrepute. The fact that the post refers to Segun Agbaje as Managing Director of the Bank further exposes the sponsors of the content as uninformed and malicious. Accordingly, we would like to clarify that Miriam Olusanya is the Managing Director of the Bank and has been at the helm of affairs of the Bank in that capacity since her appointment in August 2021.”
“This post has been escalated to all concerned parties including Twitter, for the identification of the owner of this fake account and consequent legal action.

“Our Nigerian operations support a diverse customer base with varied business interests in communities across the country and remain available to everyone.

“Guaranty Trust Bank hereby restates its commitment to being a responsible, non-partisan corporate citizen with strict adherence to the highest standards of global best practice as well as sound corporate governance in all aspects of our business operations.”

Tinubu: First Time Lucky

0
Bola Ahmed Tinubu At Arewa Joint Committee Forum

For Bola Ahmed Tinubu the President -elect of the February 25, 2023 presidential election, he did not miss his first shot at the presidency of Nigeria despite the booby traps set on his path by those who did not want him to become the commander- in- chief.

From the very time he informed President Muhammadu Buhari that he was running for the highest office in the country, to the time he contested the APC presidential primaries, and when he defeated other presidential aspirants of his party including Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to clinch the party’s ticket to contest against other aspirants, he waded through murky waters all the way.

The biggest opposition he faced, apparently came from some All Progressives Congress, APC, stalwarts and presidency officials who did not want him to succeed the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari whose tenure expires on May 29 this year.

During one of his Campaign tour in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the distraught Tinubu accused some powerful persons in Aso Rock, Nigeria’s seat of power of trying to derail his presidential ambition.

For instance, he accused some officials of his party of ochetarting the controversial Naira Design Policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and the fuel scarcity across the country to prevent voters from coming out to vote for him.

Tinubu stated, “We will use our PVCs to take over government from them. If they like let them create fuel crisis, even if they say there is no fuel, we will trek to vote. They are full of mischief; they could say there is no fuel. They have been scheming to create fuel crisis, but forget about it. Relax, I Asiwaju, have told you that the issue of fuel supply will be permanently addressed.

“Whoever wants to eat the honey embedded in a mountain won’t worry about the axe. Is that not so? And if you want to eat palm kernel, you would bring stone and use it to break it, then the kernel will come out.

“Let them increase the price of fuel, let them continue to hoard fuel, only them know where they have hoarded fuel, they hoarded money, they hoarded naira; we will go and vote and we will win. Even if they changed the ink on naira notes. Whatever their plans, it will come to naught. We are going to win. Those in the PDP will lose.”

The crisis in the ruling party was further exposed after Governor Nasir El Rufai of Kaduna State alleged that some presidency officials were trying to stop Tinubu from becoming president after Buhari.
Speaking in Kaduna few days before the election, El Rufai, a staunch supporter of Tinubu assured his people that te former governor of Lagos state will reverse the Godwin Emefiele CBN naira swap and redesign policy.

The biggest threat to Tinubu’s victory, however, came during the collation of the results when some prominent Nigerians, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Labour Party, LP called for the cancellation of the results for alleged irregularities.

Obasanjo, a strong supporter of Peter Obi, the LP presidential candidate had called on President Muhammadu Buhari to stop INEC from further announcing the results until the issue of alleged election malpractices in some parts of the country were fully addressed.

“Your Excellency, President Buhari Muhammadu, tension is building up and please let all elections that do not pass the credibility and transparency test be cancelled and be brought back with areas where elections were disrupted for next Saturday, March 4, 2023, and BVAS and Server officials be changed,” the former leader said.

In spite of the opposition, the Prof Mahmood Yakubu on Tuesday night said Tinubu has met the requirements of the constitution to be declared as the 5th democratically elected President and Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

” I will give you my utmost as your next president and commander-in-chief. Peace, unity and prosperity shall be the cornerstones of the society we intend to build. When you gaze upon what we shall accomplish in the coming years, you shall speak with pride at being a Nigerian, “Tinubu said in his first statement after he had been declared winner.

Recall that President Buhari  tried only became president  after he had tried four times.

On his part, Atiku Abubakar, Tinubu’s  closest rival in the just concluded  presidential election will go down in the nation’s history as the only candidate to contest the presidency five times without  success.

Tinubu’s Victory: Afenifere Warns Military To Steer Clear Of Politics

0

The Afenifere Renewal Group, a pan Yoruba body has urged the military to steer clear of Nigeria’s politics, saying they should resist any call for them to take over power.

ARG made this disclosure following the declaration of Bola Tinubu as the winner of the February 25 presidential election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC declared Tinubu winner of the keenly contested election on Tuesday after beating Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Peter Obi of the Labour Party.

Tinubu, a former Lagos State governor, was declared the president-elect by the electoral umpire after the 70-year-old polled 8,794,726 votes to win the 2023 presidential election.

Before he was declared winner, some Nigerians including former President Olusegun Obasanjo had called for the cancellation of the results, calling on INEC to conduct new elections in some parts of the country to give credibility to the elections.

The opposition PDP and LP had also called for the election to be cancelled over alleged irregularities.
But, ARG said agitation for the cancellation of the just concluded election could destabilise the country, adding that the country should not be plunged into anarchy.

The group particularly referenced Obasanjo’s letter, saying it viewed with great concern the former pesident ‘s call for the election to be cancelled.

The group’s position was contained in a statement signed by its Chairman, describing Obasanjo’s statement as ‘undue interference’ in the Constitutional duty of INEC.

Part of the statementbreads: “We would not join those who argued that former Military Head of government and later President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo be ignored, after his latest political tirade on the yet to be concluded 2023 Presidential elections. We would not, because, he had always postured as the only Nigerian patriot whose views must hold sway all the time.

“We in Yoruba land don’t deny him his respects but need to acknowledge that whether in his intervention in the 1993 Presidential elections that yielded MKO Abiola and in this particular instance of the yet to be concluded 2023 elections, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo lacks the moral right to serve as a guiding beacon.

“First, he is as politically partisan as any other Nigerian, which is his right but cannot at the same time be pretending to be father of the Nation.

“We will be justified to impute motive and suggest that this 2023 attempt at wanting to render the elections inchoate as that of 1993 could just be that Gen. Obasanjo would want till his passing to remain the only Yorubaman to ever attain leadership of the country. Gen. Obasanjo’s hand was heavy in the institution of the failed 1993 Interim government, a process that ultimately led to the restoration of the Military and Gen. Sanni Abacha murderous regime and ultimately to the death of the President-elect, MKO Abiola; Obasanjo’s townsman.

“We, speaking for Yoruba people call for the completion of the 2023 electoral processes starting with the already held National elections and ending with the state executive and legislative elections. If Gen. Obasanjo succeeded in intervening in the elections held under him, he should at least grant the present President the full prerogative of wishing to bequeath a free and fair election in our country. We pray he is able to do that to the end.!

“We recognize however that more than ever before Nigeria is at a crossroad and that whoever emerged of the candidates, has a great responsibility to set the ship of nationhood on the right path.

“We, as a people call on the incoming government to set itself on the task of restoring unity of all the peoples of the country. This however has to be predicated on building a Nation where all the diverse people are equitable members in the country. This can only be precipitated with a wholesome reform and Restructure of the Constitution of the Country. We no longer can pretend that the 1999 Constitution can see or aid the peace, amity and development of the country. That Constitution cannot.

“For now let the 2023 electoral processes be completed and any Party or candidate can as provided for in the Electoral Laws seek justice in our Courts. Whoever emerges however has great unifying tasks ahead if Nigeria is to remain one.

“We also add that the Military should completely steer clear of whatever temporary impasse that could occur as this is not unusual in all democracies. The Military should also turn a deaf ear to any possible incitement be it from retired Generals or their rank and file.

“The world has moved on and the Yoruba people will resist with other Nigerians were any misguided intervention to take place in our polity.”

Meanwhile, Tinubu has thanked Nigerians for electing him president.

“I am profoundly humbled that you have elected me to serve as the 16th president of our beloved republic. This is a shining moment in the life of any man and affirmation of our democratic existence. From my heart, I say thank you,” the former governor said after INEC announced his victory.

Don’t Allow Nigeria’s Democracy To Be Truncated

0
Prince Olu Bajowa and Olusegun Obasanjo

By Olu Bajowa, Rtd General

It is very sad, most disheartening and grossly unexpected that  a man of the calibre of a former military Head of State and two-time civilian President, General Olusegun Obasanjo GCFR, could contemplate anything that could truncate Nigeria’s democratic process at this very crucial stage!

General Obasanjo was the one who gave me orders to go to the war front in 1967, to fight the legendary Ore Battle, “to keep Nigeria One”.

Without any attempt to undermine General Obasanjo, I believe that his intentions on the 2023 electoral process, are far from being sincere, given the fact that he openly endorsed a particular candidate who incidentally is not leading the polls, as already announced by INEC.

As the saying goes: “He who must come to equity; must come with clean hands”. Hence, It is obvious that having endorsed a candidate, General Obasanjo’s hands are not clean in this instance, and he lacks the moral right to come to equity.

I advise President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, not to be deterred by the anti-democratic voices making the rounds and not be swayed, deceived, or persuaded to allow anyone to destroy his worthy legacy of excellent service to our great nation.

A quick glance at the results announced so far by INEC, paint a clear picture of the direction to which the voice of the people is tilted. There are several upsets which only a free and fair process could have produced.

For instance, the official release of results so far showed that, President Buhari lost Katsina, Bola Tinubu lost Lagos, El-Rufai lost Kaduna, Ganduje lost Kano, Lalong lost Plateau. All these states are strongholds of the Ruling Political Party! How else can a process be free, fair, and transparent?

I call on all well-meaning Nigerians across political parties, tribes, and religion to rise and condemn any attempt by any persons of sinister motives, to create problems for our country, leading to anarchy that could endanger peace, unity, and stability of Nigeria, and even the disintegration of the country.

Nigeria is not a lawless country. The constitution is clear on who should conduct elections, and there are provisions for review on irregularities, punishment for infractions, and aggrieved parties  to seek redress through the legal process! In fact, the law does not make any provision for unilateral cancellation or annulment of election results. Such move is totally wrong, undemocratic, unacceptable, and unconstitutional.

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!!
