Kaduna: Over 30 Persons Killed By Bandits Get Mass Burial

0

Francis Sani, the chairman of Runji village in Zango Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna state attacked by bandits on Saturday has disclosed that those killed have been given mass burial.

Over 30 persons were believed to have been killed in the LGA at the weekend, which has experienced sporadic attacks from bandits in the last few weeks.

Recall that the council had in March imposed a 24-hour curfew after no fewer than 17 persons were killed by the bandits, who had earlier killed eight persons after they attacked Atak’ Njei.

The state government has yet to give details on the number of casualties in the latest attack.

Speaking after the attack, the state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, said the government is still awaiting a report from security agencies in order to be able to give an accurate number of those killed.

Aruwan said: “Several lives were lost and an unspecified number of houses burnt down. The military has informed the Kaduna State government of an attack in Runji village, Zangon Kataf LGA, in which several lives were lost on Saturday night.

“The preliminary report further informed the government that the attack also left some residents injured and an unspecified number of houses burnt down in the community.

“According to the report, troops had a fierce encounter with the attackers and are still in the general area.

“While waiting for a detailed report, Governor Nasir el-Rufai, who received the preliminary report in the early hours of yesterday has condemned the killings as unacceptable and unjustifiable.

“The governor condoled the families that lost their loved ones and prayed for the repose of the victims’ souls. He also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

Governorship: Imo Elders Say It’s Owerri’s Turn In 2027; Adopt Charter Of Equity For Political Offices, Endorse Uzodinma For 2nd Tenure

0
Hope Uzodimma

In a historic move to engender peace and stability in Imo, the State’s Elders’ Council has adopted a Charter of Equity for the rotation of key political offices among the three Senatorial zones.

Notable among these offices are those of the Governor, Deputy Governor and Speaker of the House of Assembly.

Consequently, the Council has endorsed Governor Hope Uzodimma for a second tenure, saying that apart from the fact that he has performed creditably, his zone , Orlu should be allowed to complete its term of eight years.

In a communique issued at the end of its quarterly meeting, the Council noted that since it is a creation of law and desirous to bring stability to the polity, it decided to adopt the Imo Charter of Equity as recommended by by its Strategic Committee headed by Chief (Barr) Dan Nwanyanwu .

In the communique signed by HRH Eze Dr Cletus Ilomuanya, the Chairman and Rt Hon Maxwell Duru, the Secretary, the Council noted that upon a motion by Prof Maurice Iwu, it adopted in its entirety the Imo Charter of Equity.

According to the Charter, the governorship of the State will rotate among the three Senatorial zones of Orlu, Okigwe, and Owerri for eight years each.

It noted that since Senator Hope Uzodimma from Orlu zone is already the governor, the next zone to hold the office will be Owerri after which it will move to Okigwe Zone.

The Charter of Equity also decrees that both the governor and the deputy governor cannot come from the same zone, just like the governor and the speaker cannot come from the zone.

Accordingly, the Council urged other aspirants to the governorship position in the November 2023 election to allow Uzodimma to complete Orlu zone”s eight years tenure after which Owerri zone will take over.

The Council thereafter, upon a motion by Archbishop David Onuoha, resolved to hold an interdenominational service to present the resolutions to God and seek his blessings for the charter.

“We resolved that the leadership of the political parties in the State, the traditional rulers, the academia and religious leaders as well as captains of industries and Imo people should congregate in an interdenominational service to seek the face of God in order to avert any subterrenian move by anybody or group of persons to truncate the Charter of Equity,” it submitted.

The Council argued that the Charter of Equity was designed and adopted to ensure a just, equitable and seamless transfer of power from one zone to the other.

The Council, however, commended the State Governor for all his developmental efforts since his assumption of office and urged him to set aside a day in the nearest possible time to brief members of the council on the activities of his Government.

In other resolutions, the Council condemned the violence visited on Igbo in Lagos by some political miscreants, and urged all Nigerians to work together for the progress and growth of the nation.

For the records, this is not the first time this Charter of equity has come up in Imo State, but it has never been adhered to.

Orlu Zone has been in power since 1999, except for a break for one term only, 2007 – 2011, when Okigwe took office. Owerri Zone has never taken a turn.

Yoruba Group Says Attack On Soyinka Targeted At Yoruba Civilization, Condemns Fascism

By Akinwale Kasali

Group, under the auspices of Think Yoruba First, TYF, has condemned the attacks on Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, by supporters of the Labour Party, Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, popularly known as ‘Obidients’.

The Group alleged that the series of attacks on Soyinka were deliberately targeted at Yoruba heritage.

On Sunday, the Group in a Press Statement said that the driving force behind the Obidients Movement is nothing but irredentist Igbo Fundamentalism fueled by hate, lack of culture, avarice and incredible disregard for  democratic culture.

TYF General Secretary, Bukola Adeniji, in a Statement signed by him said that the Ogun State born literary Icon is one of the few men of honor when it comes to defending democracy and basic human rights in Nigeria and across the world.

It condemned alleged attempts by Obi supporters to promote Igbo supremacy theory motivated by false history, arrogance and a savage passion  for ceaseless acts of aggression.

The organization which is constituted by Yoruba professionals at home and in the Diaspora said that the Yoruba people are being pushed beyond the elasticity limit and will henceforth adopt the philosophy of proportional response to deal with Igbo bullying and ethnic profiling their folk hero, Peter Obi, having been defeated at the February 25th Presidential poll.

“The attacks on Soyinka shows a high level of immorality and the uncultured past time of a group of neoliberal fascists who detest basic tenets of democracy and human liberty,” the group said.

It added that  Soyinka is among the few men of honor left in Nigeria who is not afraid to speak truth to power.

“In his usual frank method, Prof. Soyinka spoke the truth about the anti-democratic actions of the members of the Obidents movement who have largely morphed themselves into Neoliberal Fascist movement.”

It also argued that Nigeria’s fragile democracy was largely built on the sacrifice of Yorùbá activists who fought with courage against colonialism beginning from the 19th century, confronted military rule and feudalism all of which tend to stunt Nigeria’s rise to global fame.

Citing the contributions of Late Bishop Ajayi Crowther who translated the Holy Bible from English into Igbo and the free education and free health of Chief Obafemi Awolowo which forced many Igbo to flee their villages in search of greener pasture in Lagos as some of the goodwill extended to Igbo but which the later would never appreciate.

“Through music, art and literature, the Yoruba have been known for a culture of resistance against evil. In the past 200 years, our forebears have fought all forms of repression at a very high cost including death”

The Think Yoruba First said those attacking Soyinka lack a sense of history and are driven by bade instint instead of logic and common sense.

It, also, cited the courageous (Akínkanjú) spirit of Yoruba in the bitter struggle against the annulment of 1993 June 12 election when Chief MKO Abiola’s mandate was stolen by the rogue military government of Nigeria.

“Soyinka was among the Yoruba led NADECO movement who narrowly escaped the evil of Sanni Abacha’s military plot to capture him by riding a motorcycle across neighboring international border via the NADECO route.

“In his absentia, Sanni Abacha proclaimed a death sentence on him, the efforts of the likes of Prof Soyinka and other notable members of NADECO movement was what led to the restoration of the democracy that Nigeria enjoyed today, Peter Obi was not part of that movement.”

It also noted that without the bravery of Soyinka and his fellow group of nationalists, who were largely of Yoruba extraction, there would not have been  democracy which Obidients movement can plug into.

“The enormous insults, bullying, intimidation, and defacement of the revered hardcore Yorùbá intellectual and world

icon by the Obidients movement are the classic examples of the tyranny and intolerance which Prof. Soyinka has fought against all his life.

Speaking further, it  said “Think Yoruba First, is a Yorùbá conservative group, strongly condemns the primitive and neoliberal fascistic actions of the Obidients movement.

“Soyinka is just one out of many Yorùbá icons that the Obidients movement has attacked in their savagely, overzealous campaign for their desired presidential candidate Peter Obi, who was decisively defeated in the last Nigeria presidential election.

“The neofascist Obidients movement attacked the integrity of the Father of post military democracy in Nigeria, Chief MKO Abiola, this is another great Yorùbá icon that was the target of Obidense campaign of calumny.”

It also condemned supporters of Obi for insulting many notable Yorùbá icons including the Ooni of Ife, and Great Fela Kuti, after this, they proceeded to tear into the fabric of Yorùbá Unity by seeking to rubbish the Yorùbá identity.”

It described one David Hundeyin, a known Obidient, as a rash and riotous mind, a bully who appear to work for reactionary political interests and has  misused his social media handle to spread false narratives about history, Yorùbá origin and pronounced that Yorùbá unified identity does not exist and that Yorùbá language is useless.”

It said “He was echoed by other prominent Obidients including one unseeded Barr Omirhobo and Kingsley Moghalu who then started a segregation campaign against the Yorùbá identity by sending many tweets in which Yorùbá were divided into those from interiors and those from Lagos.

“Barr Omirhobo even used the term “Ara Oke” to describe other Yorùbá who he sees as different from the Yorùbá in Lagos. Moghalu in his own twisted account suggested Yorùbá from Ogun State are somehow superior to other Yorùbá, as conservatives, we are not fooled by his ill intention, Moghalu veiled attempt at setting up the Yorùbá against each other is grotesque and condemned as an act of divide and conquer strategy of Obidents.

“Many Obidients social media influencers were empowered to target the Yoruba identity including attacks on Yoruba women in which Yoruba mothers were described as dirty and undesirable to Yoruba men who are allegedly choosing to marry non Yorùbá Women over them, all these actions of prominent Obidients and social media troll Obidients are direct attacks on the essence of Yorùbá beyond the scope of politics.

“Yorùbá conservatives have a duty to defend and protect Yorùbá heritage, attempt by political thugs and bullies masquerading as agents of change to destroy our essence as Yorùbá will not be tolerated.”

“Chief MKO Abiola paid the ultimate price in securing return of democracy to Nigeria, albeit in its infancy, activities of Obidients including their protests to request military intervention and their quest to seek election annulment because their candidate loss is anti-democratic.”

The group said further “The Democratic process is guided by the Judiciary, and the electoral system is the crown jewel of democracy. A movement that doesn’t trust the electoral process and did not believe in the judiciary system is calling for anarchy. Obidense movement is an anarchist neoliberal fascist movement that wanted to enthrone itself by attacking and destroying Yorùbá great leaders and Yorùbá unity, and their action need to be condemned and rejected by all well-meaning Nigerians.

“The Judiciary system exists for a purpose, Obidense should seek redress in court of law rather than discrediting the judiciary process.

“Attack on the judiciary is undermining the very guard rail of democracy and this constitutes call for insurrection, it is a self-entitled, grandiose and authoritarian move.”

The group called on the newly elected government of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to use the events of the 2023 election as an example of the true nature of the country call Nigeria, and address one of the country’s biggest problems which has been an impediments to progress, the government of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu need to give the Nigeria people an ethnically conscious constitution with means for the different regions of the country to defend itself.

“Like Prof Wole Soyinka, we do not know if we still believe in the Nigeria project, but we cannot stay quiet in the face of Tyranny that is the Obidense movement.”

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, recorded a landslide victory at the Supplementary Elections held in two Federal Constituencies in Rivers State.

Electoral Umpire,  Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared Dunameme Dekor  and Blessing Amadi, as the Winners of the Khana/Gokana Federal Constituency and Port Harcourt Federal Constituency 2, respectively.

INEC announced the winners of the supplementary election after the collation of results were concluded for Sorgho and Bangha communities in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State and PHALGHA 2.

The Returning Officer for the Constituency election, Kingsely Owete, after reading the performance of the various candidates in the election said: “The PDP candidate, Dumnamene Dekor, having satisfied the requirements of the law is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.

It would be recalled that the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate for the election, Collins Owhondah had withdrawn from the race, less than 24 hours before the election and announced his defection to the PDP.

Owhondah cited the lack of focus, seriousness, and insensitivity of APC leadership in the state as reasons for dumping the party, saying, “The APC is never ready to win elections in Rivers State”, he said.

Atiku Calls For Arrest Of Adamawa REC, Says Action Exposes INEC,  Embarrasses Nigeria

By Ayodele Oni

Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) in the 15th February 2023 Presidential Election, Atiku Abubakar, has reacted to the hurried declaration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Aishatu Dahiru Binani, as winner of Adamawa state Governorship election. He said it confirms the many  flaws of the 2023 general elections.

Atiku pointed out that the initial decision of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the State, Mr. Hudu Ari to declare Aisha Binani, as the winner of the election, remains a case study in the shambolic nature of the 2023 elections in general.

He also described it as an indication that INEC had approached the Adamawa State election with a pre-set agenda of declaring the APC at all cost.

Atiku noted that Nigerians have seen how INEC conducted the February 25 and March 18 elections against the run of play and challenged cheated candidates to go to the court.

The former Vice President, therefore, called the attention of Nigerians to what he described as “the game plan of upturning the democratic wishes’’ of the people of Adamawa State in the governorship election.

These were contained in a press release signed by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe.

According to him, in Adamawa, Nigerians are witnesses to a novel practice in election management where a Resident Electoral Commissioner announced the loser of an election as a winner.

“It is, therefore, on this note that we wish to call the attention of the world to the scheme being perpetrated by INEC to compromise the electoral wishes of the people of Adamawa State.

“We also wish to inform the world that such behaviour by INEC has a natural consequence of unsettling the peace and security of the society.

“It must be put on record that the people of Adamawa State will not allow themselves to be cheated three times in a row.

‘It must also be put on record that whatever the consequences of the scheme being scripted, both the INEC and those vested with state powers should be blamed for the consequences of such actions.

“That the APC candidate has a prepared acceptance speech is a pointer to the guarantee of a false victory which the INEC must have promised her.

“Recall that this was the same Resident Electoral Commissioner who pressured the Returning Officer to manipulate the results of the contentious Fufore Local Government Area in the March 18 governorship election.

“The people of Adamawa shall not allow this injustice to pass without being challenged.

“It is our demand that the Adamawa REC and any other parties complicit in this treasonable act should be arrested immediately and prosecuted to the full extent of the law to serve as a deterrent to anti-democratic forces who may want to torpedo our democracy and provoke violence in our country.”

Adamawa Guber: PDP Demands Arrest of Adamawa State REC, Declaration Of Fintiri As Winner

0
Mallam Hudu Yunusa Ari

By Akinwale Kasali & Ayodele Oni

Following the confusion which engulfed the outcome of the Governorship Election Supplementary Poll in Adamawa State, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has demanded for the arrest of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, in the State, Mallam Hudu Yunusa Ari.

The Supplementary Election was held on Saturday, 15th April between Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of the PDP and the Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC,  Senator Aishatu Dahiru  Binani.

At the end of the poll, while collation of results was still on-going, Ari, inexplicably announced the Candidate of the APC as winner and, therefore, duly elected Governor. By so doing, he usurped the job of the Returning Officer, Professor Mohammed Mele, the only person allowed, by law, to announce the results.

Mallam Ari’s conduct caused confusion and crisis which resulted in crisis. A couple of people, allegedly, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, were beaten to stupor. At least one of them, purportedly, Ari, was stripped to his underpants by shocked and angry PDP loyalists.

In its reaction to Ari’s unbecoming and unprecedented behaviour, an embarrassed INEC leadership distanced itself from the declaration of Binani as Governor-elect, voided and annulled it, and summoned, with immediate effect, both the REC and the Returning Officer to its Headquarters, Abuja.

In a statement signed on its behalf by Barrister Festus Okoye, Commissioner, Information and Voter Education, INEC said:

“The attention of the Commission has been drawn to a purported declaration of winner in the Adamawa Governorship election by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) even when the process has clearly not been concluded.

The action of the REC is a usurpation of the power of the Returning Officer. It is null, void and of no effect.

“Consequently, the collation of results of the supplementary election is hereby suspended. The REC, Returning Officer and all involved are hereby invited to the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja immediately.

Detailed statement to follow shortly.”

But the PDP, whose Candidate, incumbent Governor Fintiri was leading until Ari’s illegal declaration of Binani as winner wants more.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the Party Party  described the incident as reprehensible, and demanded that  Ari be arrested. It, also, called for the declaration of Governor Fintiri as the duly elected Governor.

Following is the full text of the PDP statement.

“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) calls on the people of Adamawa State, Nigerians and the International Community to disregard the purported declaration of the defeated Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Aisha Binani as winner of the Adamawa State Governorship election.

“The PDP also demands for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the Adamawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mallam Hudu Yunusa Ari, for making such illegal declaration in criminal usurpation of the duties and powers of the Returning Officer, Prof Mohammed Mele, while collation was on-going.

“It is even more absurd that the Adamawa State REC did not only usurp the powers of the Returning Officer but attempted to declare a winner without figures in reckless violation of the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act, 2022, INEC Guidelines as well as the sensibility of the people of Adamawa State.

“This reprehensible criminal conduct of the Adamawa State REC confirms the earlier alarms by the PDP which demanded for his immediate removal from Adamawa State following evidence of his complicity and being compromised by the APC and its candidate to manipulate the election in their favour notwithstanding the votes by the people of Adamawa State.

“Mallam Yunusa Ari’s action is subversive and calculated to cause crisis in Adamawa State, destabilize our democracy and peaceful co-existence as a nation. We call on the Inspector General of Police to immediately arrest Mallam Yunusa Ari and make him face the full wrath of the law for his conduct.

“The PDP notes the pronouncement by INEC Headquarters that the action of Mallam Yunusa Ari is “null, void and of no effect”. The PDP therefore demands that INEC Headquarters should immediately direct the Returning Officer to conclude collation, announce the results from the Polling Units and declare our candidate, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri as winner, having scored the majority of lawful votes cast.

“From the results already collated across the 69 Polling Units where the supplementary elections held and which are on the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal, Governor Fintiri clearly won the election.

“Our Party therefore demands that INEC should WITHOUT FURTHER DELAY announce the results as already collated from the Polling Units and declare Governor Fintiri as winner. Anything short of this will not be accepted by our Party and the people of Adamawa State.”

Adamawa Gov Election Remains Inconclusive –  INEC National HQ; Binani’s  Declaration By REC Voided

By Ayodele Oni and Akinwale Kasali

The declaration of the Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Adamawa, Senator Aishatu Dahiru Binani as the Governor-elect, after the Supplementary Election, has been voided.

There was, apparently, a mix- up Sunday morning when the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared  Binani the winner.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner for the State, Barrister Hudu Yunusa, made the declaration following the supplementary election conducted on Saturday. By the declaration, Yunusa usurped the job of the Chief Returning Officer, whose job it is to declare the winner.

The social media is awash with the declaration, which is the sole responsibility of the Chief Returning Officer for the election.

The National headquarters of INEC in Abuja has reacted to the mix-up in the outcome of the Governorship election in Adamawa state.

INEC’s Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education, Festus Okoye, stated in a statement issued on Sunday, that the action of the Resident Electoral Commissioner amounts to usurpation of duties.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Commission has been drawn to a purported declaration of winner in the Adamawa Governorship election by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) even when the process has clearly not been concluded.

“The action of the REC is a usurpation of the power of the Returning Officer. It is null, void and of no effect.

“Consequently, the collation of results of the supplementary election is hereby suspended.

“The REC, Returning Officer and all involved are hereby invited to the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja immediately.”
