Mary Boyd -CDC

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (US CDC) hosted federal and state ministries of health, Government of Nigeria health agency leadership, and HIV program implementing partners for a two-day meeting to review President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) program performance over the last six months and plan for government-led program sustainability going forward. The meeting was a follow up to an event last October where the group developed a roadmap for HIV programs in US CDC-supported states to help Nigeria reach epidemic control.

In her opening remarks, US CDC Country Director Mary Boyd commended states and partners for their work over the last six months and highlighted recent US CDC-supported activities like the Nigeria Sustainability and HIV Impact Program. She reiterated US CDC’s commitment to working with the Government of Nigeria, states, partners, and communities to increase the number of people with HIV who know their status and receive life-saving treatment.

The meeting served as a review of accomplishments, challenges, and best practices from the last six months. It also focused on aligning national and state program activities with each other and the strategic pillars of PEPFAR’s new five-year strategy to ensure long-term program sustainability.

In a presentation given by the National AIDS and STDs Control Programme, the importance of strengthened collaboration between national, state levels, and local levels, as well and with key partners, was emphasized. Also highlighted was the recently issued government-to-government award which directly reengaged government institutions to strengthen national and state HIV program ownership.

A third program performance review and planning meeting will be held in six months to ensure Nigeria stays on track to end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat.

Over 12,00 applicants who applied for teaching job in Ekiti state have been pruned down to 1,300 candidates.

The applicants had earlier sat for the recruitment examination aptitude test for teachers in public primary schools in Ekiti State after which those of them that scaled the first hurdle were invited for second round of interview.

The Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof. Femi Akinwumi who disclosed this in Ado Ekiti during the interview/documentation process for successful candidates, said only applicants that scored 45 percent and above in the qualifying examination were shortlisted.

He added that the focus was to fill existing vacancies for teachers in the state’s public primary schools, insisting that there was no room for compromise in conducting the exercise to meet global best practices.

According to him, special consideration was accorded to people living with disabilities among the candidates, as well as candidates from communities with hard-to-staff schools, saying that the move would address the difficulty in providing staff for schools in difficult terrains and remote locations.

The SUBEB boss pointed out further that a bulk of the successful candidates in the ongoing exercise would be posted to rural communities to ensure the provision of qualified personnel in all schools across the state.

Expressing appreciation to Governor Biodun Oyebanji for approving the Board’s proposal for the recruitment of qualified personnel into the Basic Education sector in the state, he assured that the exercise would be fair and just.

Akinwumi also solicited the continued support of the people on the recruitment exercise, urging those that were not invited to the interview not to be discouraged as the exercise would be a continuous process.

“The present administration in the State understands the plight of the unemployed graduates and will continue to do everything within its powers to reduce the number of people in the labour market.”

Democracy: CNPP Commends Justice Ekwo, Says Judiciary Now The Last Hope Of Nigerians

Chief Willy Ezugwu

Conference Of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has hailed Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja for temporarily declining to hear an application by Senator Aisha ‘Binani’ Dahiru, seeking an order of the court to restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from invalidating her declaration as winner of the governorship election in Adamawa State.

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Binani, had on Monday approached the court for leave to file an application for judicial review of the administrative decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) made on April 16, 2023 in respect of her declaration as winner of the governorship election in Adamawa State which held on March 18 and the supplementary elections of April 15.

The CNPP, in a statement signed by its Secretary General, Chief Willy Ezugwu, noted that the judiciary has by the court’s verdict saved the state from anarchy, saying that “it is now left for our Judges and Justices to rekindle the courage with which they delivered landmark judgments during the military dictatorship while delivering justice in all litigations on the 2023 general elections without fear or favour.”

According to the umbrella body of all registered political parties and political associations in the country, “the judiciary is said to be the last hope of the common man and as far as the Nigerian democracy is concerned today, only the judiciary ensure its sustenance in view of poor conduct of the 2023 general elections.

“This has become imperative as INEC, the supposed Independent electoral umpire, has failed the country by performing below expectations of majority of Nigerian people in the way and manner it conducted the general elections.

“On their path, most security agencies portrayed themselves as instruments in the hands of politicians and this was equally evident in Adamawa State where the police provided cover for the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Barr. Yusuf Hudu Ari, who usurped the powers of the Returning Officer for the Adamawa State governorship election.

“There were many instances where the security agencies deployed to states on election duties failed to protect the electorates and, as seen in some viral videos, allegedly provided cover for hoodlums who attacked and maimed innocent citizens whose sins were going out to exercise their franchise.

“The security agencies equally performed below President Muhammadu Buhari’s directives in post-2023 general elections in parts of the country.

“The courageous decision of Justice Inyang Ekwo on the experte order brought before the court foiled a civilian coup in Adamawa State.

“All Nigerians of good faith and lovers of democracy all over the world have their eyes fixed on the judiciary to restore hope in our people, especially the youths, and re-energise the confidence of the electorates who trusted INEC and went out to vote in the 2023 general elections”, the CNPP averred.

Business man, Politician, Elder Statesman, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, is the new President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

He succeeds Professor George Obiozor who died and was buried recently.

This was made public when the Imo State Elders Council  led by its Chairman, HRM Eze Cletus Ilomuanya and the new National Executive paid a courtesy visit on the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma.

Receiving them, Uzodimma  promised that the Government, under his watch, will religiously help to implement the recent Imo Charter of Equity as proposed and endorsed by the Imo State Council of Elders at its first quarterly meeting on April 13, 2023 in Owerri.

The Charter provides that Owerri Zone will provide the next Governor after Uzodinma who is from Orlu Zone.

Members of the Imo Elders Council had come to formally present to the Governor the communique on the outcome of their meeting with regard to the Imo State Charter of Equity, and to also present to him their choice, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, as the replacement for the late President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Prof George Obiozor.

Governor Uzodinma had thanked the Elders for proposing and adopting the Charter of Equity which he strongly believes “is a road map towards political stability, peace and inclusiveness of all the zones in Imo State.”

He said he is convinced that Imo Charter of Equity will ensure equity, help douse political tensions and ensure peace and promised to to help to ensure it is applied to the letter.

“The Charter of Equity is not intended to muscle the political ambition of any person, rather it is to ensure harmony, peace and it will enlarge the political space for all.”

Governor Uzodinma then assured that his administration will work with the Elders Council and other Imo State stakeholders to achieve the principles of the Charter of Equity.

He pleaded with all political stakeholders to endeavour to give the Charter of Equity the space to succeed, noting that “it does not in any way go against the tenets of democracy.”

Furthermore, the Governor added that “beyond the South East, like in the South South Delta State, the Charter of Equity has been adopted and implemented to reduce political tensions and bickering.”

Governor Uzodinma therefore reassured that with him at the helm of the 3R Government, he will do everything to ensure the objective of the Imo State Charter of Equity as adopted by the Elders Council is realized, adding that, “it has enough space to accommodate all political interests in peace and harmony.”

Earlier, Governor Uzodinma had expressed delight over the visit and the opportunity to host the Elders and congratulated Chief Emmanuel Iwuanuyanwu for his choice and adoption by the Imo Elders to be the next President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide wide.

He acknowledged that “Iwuanyanwu is well–known, not only to the Igbos and Nigeria, but all over the world with impeccable credentials and high level pedigree.”

The Governor noted that he was happy that the stakeholders of Ohanaeze Ndigbo were able to discover somebody who can appropriately fit into the vacuum created by the demise of the former President General, Prof. George Obiozor, and emphasized that “the choice of Iwuanyanwu is a right one that no individual/group can fault.”

He expressed gratitude to the Elders and Imo citizens for believing in him, showing him love at all times, particularly on January 5, 2023 at the Stakeholders meeting when Imo people invited him to run for a second tenure.

Governor Uzodinma recalled the barrage of endorsements that came after that of Imo stakeholders, recalling that on Friday,  April 15 2023, members of his political Party, the All Progressives Congress, unanimously endorsed him as their Sole Candidate for the November 11, 2023 governorship election.

“Today the Imo State Elders Council has adopted me to continue in office for the second tenure and then lead in the implementation of the ‘’Charter of Equity’’ as proposed.”

He added:  “I feel humbled by all these endorsement but that of the Elders Council with the calibre of members involved is the highest I have received. It is the icing on the cake and I will not to take the endorsements for granted.”

In his address earlier, the Chairman of Imo State Council of Elders, Eze Ilomuanya said the members did not only come to present Chief Iwuanyanwu as “the consensus candidate of the Council for the post of President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo,” but also “the Imo Charter of Equity to His Excellency, Dist. Senator Hope Uzodimma the Executive Governor of Imo State.”

He described Chief Iwuanyanwu as a dynamic, versatile, purpose driven and broad-minded personality of impeccable pedigree and appealed to the Governor to grant his seal of support and approval to his adoption by the Council.

Eze Ilomuanya equally explained that the Imo Charter of Equity, unanimously adopted by the Council, “is a panacea to the rancour and heat usually associated to the quest for the Governorship seat of Imo State.”

“It is to ensure peace, equity, fairness and justice to all the political zones in the State.”

In his acceptance speech, Chief Iwuanyanwu described his adoption and the role he is to play as President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo World-wide as a “sacred duty.”

He expressed happiness in accepting the position and said it was also a surprise that Igbos can unanimously accept that one person leads them without struggles, noting that he believes that God will lead him through.

Chief Iwuanyanwu appreciated the Governor for his numerous achievements, particularly in the areas of road infrastructure, health and education in the State.

He said his plans for Ohanaeze Ndigbo will include making the body financially self-sufficient, improving the agricultural sector in Igboland, setting up a Council of academics in the area of education and generally, ensuring that Igboland becomes an industrial hub.

Highlights of the visit were the presentation of the document on Imo Charter of Equity to the Governor and the observation of one minute silence in honour of the immediate past President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Prof. Obiozor.

Present at the visit were; the Deputy Governor, Prof. Placid Njoku, the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Cosmas Iwu, Chief of Staff, Barr. Nnamdi Anyaehie, and Members of the Expanded Executive Council.

From the Traditional Institutions were the Chairman Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM Eze (Dr.) Emmanuel Okeke and his two Deputies, HRH Eze Eddy Okeke and HRH Eze Thomas Obiefule of Okigwe zone and Orlu zone respectively.

Rivers: PDP Calls Wike’s Bluff, Dismisses Suspension of Senator, Fmr. Deputy Speaker, Others

Nyesom Wike

By Gideon Njoku

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in a bid to instill some sanity, and avoid a complete destruction of the Party in Rivers State, has dismissed the suspension, from the Party, of a number of high profile members, including a serving Senator, George Sekibo, and a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Austin Opara.

Sekibo and Opara were suspended from their Wards by  their Ward Executives in Ward 2, Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area and Ward 10, Porthacourt City Local Government Area, respectively, on trumped-up charges of anti-party activities.

However, not a few Party loyalists in the State are alleging that the rhythm to which the Ward Executives are dancing is being played for them by a higher authority. They point accusing fingers at the Governor, Nyesom Wike, insisting that the Ward Executives will never have the courage to suspend such high profile members unless they had the support of the Governor.

Wike has been at loggerheads with the two men, as well as with a former Minister for Transportation, Dr Abiye Sekibo, former Governor, Celestine Omehia, former Senator Lee Meaba and many others. His problem with them, for which he has made them irrelevant in the scheme of PDP affairs in the State, stemmed from their good relationship with Atiku Abubakar, Presidential Candidate for the PDP, who Wike fought to a standstill for, among, other issues, not picking him as his running mate.

In reaction to the suspensions, the National Working Committee, NWC, of the PDP, dismissed the action as null, void and of no effect.

In a statement signed by the Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba,  the PDP said:

“The NWC, after a thorough consideration of the petitions by Senator Sekibo and Rt. Hon. Austin Opara, dated April 17, 2023, against the purported suspension, hereby declares the action by the said Ward Executives which borders on issues of discipline, as null and void and of no effect, not being consistent with the provisions of the Constitution of the PDP (As amended in 2017)”

Following is the full text of the statement titled:

PDP Dismisses Purported Suspension of Senator Sekibo, Dr. Austin Opara

“The attention of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been drawn to the purported suspension of Senator Dr. George Thompson Sekibo and Rt. Hon. Dr. Austin Adiele Opara from the Party, reportedly by the Ward Executives of Ward 2 of Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area and Ward 10 of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area of Rivers State, respectively.

“The NWC, after a thorough consideration of the petitions by Senator Sekibo and Rt. Hon. Austin Opara dated April 17, 2023 against the purported suspension, hereby declares the action by the said Ward Executives which borders on issues of discipline, as null and void and of no effect, not being consistent with the provisions of the Constitution of the PDP (As amended in 2017).

“For clarity, Section 57 (7) provides that “Notwithstanding any other provision relating to discipline, no Executive Committee, at any level except the National Executive Committee, shall entertain any question of discipline as may relate or concern a member of the National Executive Committee, Deputy Governor or member of the National Assembly.

“The NWC, therefore, charges all leaders, critical stakeholders, members, teeming supporters of our Party in Rivers State and the general public to disregard the purported suspension of Senator Dr. George Thompson Sekibo and Rt. Hon. Dr. Austin Adiele Opara.

“The NWC enjoins all Party members in Rivers State to remain united and continue to work together in the overall interest of our Party and the Nation.

“Finally, the NWC is steadily progressing in our reconciliation efforts among all members of our Party across the Country and we are encouraged by the success so far achieved.”

However, not a few people warn the NWC to watch its back. Using the same method of getting the Ward to suspend such high profile members in PDP, followed by going to Court to perfect it, inspired of the NWC voiding and anulling the suspensions, Wike had, allegedly, dealth  with former National Chairman, Uche Secondus, and the now suspended National Chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu.

Adamawa: How Nigeria Dodged A Bullet, Rescued From Anarchy

0

By Adesina Soyooye

The much maligned Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Tuesday, helped Nigeria to dodge a bullet. By doing so, it also saved the Country  from a would- have-been anarchy and a descent into the abyss.

Those are the opinions held by the Governors’ Forum of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in reaction to the hard fought victory of the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, in the just concluded Governorship Election in the State.

Confusion and protests had engulfed the State after the Governorship supplementary polls on 15, April 2023.  It was between the incumbent Governor Fintiri of the PDP, and the Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Aishatu Dahiru Binani.

At the end of voting, while collation was still going on in Local Government Areas, and Fintiri leading comfortably, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Hudu Yunusa Ari, inexplicably declared Binani the winner, and so, the Governor-elect. By doing so. Ari, a Lawyer, set the tone for the controversy and confusion and protests which led to his being  manhandled. A Security Officer of the Department of State Security, DSS, was also manhandled.

Aside from the fact that collation of votes was still ongoing, it was not Ari’s duty to announce the result. He usurped the job of the Returning Officer, Professor  Muhammed Mele, the only person, authorized by law, to announce the result.

Embarrassed by the incident which triggered a massive protest in Yola, capital of Adamawa State, and strong condemnations from groups and individuals, INEC rightly declared as null, void and of no effect,  the declaration of Binani as the Governor-elect. It also invited both Ari and Mele to Abuja, and ended up inviting the Police to arrest Ari, who has been suspended from office.

On Tuesday, Professor Mele, finally, declared Fintiri, the winner and Governor-elect. According to INEC, he defeated Binani by scoring 430,861 number of votes against Binani’s 396,788 votes.

The PDP Governorship Forum, in a statement signed by its Director-General, Hon. CID Maduabum, dated 18, April, 2023, while congratulating Fintiri, also commended INEC. It said the victory belongs to Democracy. It said INEC, by standing firm, and redeeming itself, should  toe same path  “to promptly re-visit all other elections where infractions have been identified.”

Following is the full text of the statement.

“The PDP Governors’ Forum congratulates Gov. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri on his re-election as the Governor of Adamawa State.

“It was a hard fought and hard won victory not just for Gov. Fintiri, but also for Adamawa State, democracy and due process in Nigeria.

“Indeed, Nigeria has just been rescued from descent into the abyss. We have just dodged another bullet.

“We commend INEC for redeeming itself and hopes that this is a harbinger of things to come. It is in this regard that the Commission is requested to promptly re-visit all other elections where infractions have been identified. Where the matters have been taken to the Tribunal, INEC should assume a garb and toga of neutrality and inform the Tribunals of the actual events that transpired in the elections.

“It has been shown by today’s (Tuesday’s) development that INEC can reverse itself where mistakes have been made.

“We call on Gov. Fintiri to continue to justify this huge mandate and trust of the people of Adamawa State.”

Court Sacks MC Oluomo’s  Park And Garage Administration, Reinstate RTEAN

0
Musiliu Akinsany- MC Oluomo

By Akinwale Kasali

The reign and dominance of Musiliu Akinsanya (MC Oluomo) as the Chairman of the Lagos Parks and Garage Administration has ended. MC Oluomo has been sacked by the  National Industrial Court. He was sacked on Wednesday by the Court in Lagos.

Justice Maureen Esowe, the Trial Judge, nullified Oluomo’s appointment and  ordered the reinstatement of the operations of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, RTEAN, in the state.

The Suit was instituted by RTEAN against the State Government and other defendants.

The Lagos State Government had dissolved and suspended the activities of RTEAN and took over the Parks and Garages. It then leading appointed  MC Oluomo as the Chairman of the State Parks and Garages.

Oluomo’s appointment came after his sacking by the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, over his alleged high handedness, abuse of office, financial recklessness and other series of  allegations leveled against him.

Following the suspension of RTEAN by the Lagos State Government, RTEAN dragged LASG to court in October 2022, over the dissolution of the elected Executive Committee of the Union , and the appointment of a Caretaker Body, known as the Parks and Garages Administrators.

The plaintiffs joined the State Governor, the Attorney-General of the State, Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the State Governor on Transportation, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, and all  members of the Caretaker Committee in the case. It argued,  through its Counsel, Elisha Kurah, SAN,  that a State cannot interfere in the affairs of a Trade Union registered under the Trade Unions Act of 2004, adding that the State cannot dissolve the Union. It contended that such matters are handled by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.

But, the State Government  argued that the Government did not violate the law or dissolve the National Body’s operations in the State, but sought to maintain law and order by creating the ad-hoc Committee when violence ensued between the unions.

In his judgment, Justice Esowe, dismissed the defendants’ preliminary objections to the suit, insisting the matter was straightforward.  The Court, he said, has jurisdiction to hear and determine it with no serious dispute to warrant an exchange of pleadings.

The Judge held that the action of the Lagos State in suspending the National Union’s operations in the State and setting up a caretaker committee was illegal and against the provisions of Sections 4 (1), (2)& (3), and 5 (1) &(3), read along with item 34 of the exclusive legislative list, of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

The judge also held that the Government and the Police should have intervened by arresting and prosecuting those behind the fracas and not inquiring into the dispute.

Justice Esowe restrained the Lagos State Government from further interfering with the operations of the Union’s  Exco and ordered the police to refrain from intimidating the  Officers and to remove all barricades it imposed around their Secretariat and to grant them unfettered access to their offices.

Jubilation greeted the judgement.

Remain Calm, Steadfast To The Course – Obi Urges Obidients, Nigerians

0
Peter Obi in Gombe

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, has encouraged Nigerians to remain calm and steadfast in their journey of reclaiming their mandate of a New Nigeria, noting that he will never give up on the journey, until victory is achieved.

Obi explained that he never expected the journey to New Nigeria to be an easy one, saying that the forces who had, over the years, lived off the old order, were bound to fight back, as is being experienced now.  He said, “if they come at us through land, air and sea, we will respond to them through land, air and sea, but we will remain law abiding and will never give up on the nation.

“We are on the right path, and we will remain commited to the course,” Obi said.

Obi made the remarks at the National Executive Council Meeting of the Labour Party held in Asaba today. He reiterated his commitment to a ‘Nigeria that will be beneficial to every Nigerian.’ He maintained that the struggle to reclaim the mandate was not about him, as a person, but about millions of Nigerians who reposed their trust on him through their votes.

“The millions of Nigerians who voted for me did not just cast their votes, but they invested their hope in me. They deserve justice. So we must stay the course. And beyond regaining our mandate, I am commited to lifting people out of poverty. I  remain commited to transforming Nigeria, starting from the North to every part of the nation,” Obi stated.

He further revealed that there may be more mud slinging on him from those who are against the emergence of the New Nigeria, but he said he would never be deterred by the obstacles along the way to victory. “I have always lived my life in the most law abiding manner possible. Sometimes, as humans, we make mistakes, but I will never knowingly break any law. I am, therefore, not afraid of the lies and propaganda against my person. They are part of the journey to a New Nigeria,” Obi concluded.

INEC Declares Fintiri Governor-elect In Adamawa Supplementary Poll, Binani’s Hope Is Dashed

0

By Akinwale Kasali

After days of confusion, protests, accusations and counter accusations, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared Incumbent Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri as the winner of the Governorship Poll.

Fintiri was declared winner around 5:49pm on Tuesday by INEC Returning Officer for Adamawa 2023.

The incumbent Governor of Adamawa polled 430,821 votes to defeat Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed popularly known as Binani who had a total of 398,788 votes.

INEC finally put to rest the drama and controversies of the keenly contested Adamawa 2023 election held on March 18 and April 15 (supplementary election).

With INEC’s declaration, Binani has failed to make history as the first elected Governor in Nigeria.

She was, however, on the verge of history when the now suspended Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Hudu Ari declared her winner of the poll on Sunday, before the INEC Headquarters declared the election inconclusive and the announcement made by the REC Officer null and void.
