Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa state has solicited the supoort for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, ahead the November 11 governorship election in the oil rich state.

The governor, is seeking support from his people six months ahead the election which many say will be tough considering that the contest will majorly be between Diri and Timipre Sylva who recently indicated his interest to contest the election.

Silva, the immediate former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, is a former governor of the oil rich state, and has recently resigned his position from the cabinet of President Muhammadu Buhari, to contest the election in few months under the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Considering the pedigree of the two frontline candidates, not a few monitoring events in the state said the governorship will be an epic battle between the governor and the former minster.

Diri however urged the people of the state to reaffirm their love for him by voting PDP during the election.
The governor spoke during a thanksgiving service that rounded off the third session of the 8th Synod of the Niger Delta West Diocese at St Peter’s Anglican Church, Nedugo-Gbarain, in Yenagoa, the state capital.

The governor who was represented at the event by his Deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, said he needs four more years to consolidate on the achievements of his administration.

In his acceptance speech after winning the APC sole ticket, Sylva said one of his policy thrust after winning the governorship in November, is to tackle the endemic flooding challenge affecting the state.

House Of Reps Shifts Resumption, Amidst Debate Over Buhari’s $800m World Bank Loan Request

The House of Representatives has postponed its resumption date earlier scheduled for Tuesday. The lower chamber of Nigeria’s National Assembly, NASS, will now reconvene a week after on May 23.
According to a statement a statement signed by the Clerk of the House, Yahaya Danzaria, the shift will allow returning members-elect take part in the second batch of induction.

Recall that the induction of the new NASS members started two weeks ago, and both members-elect of the house of Reps Senators-elect are taking part in the event.

The resumption was also postponed on the heels of the debate by NASS members on the controversial $800 million World Bank loan request by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The president has been roundly condemned by not a few Nigerians for making such request barely few days to the end of his administration on May 29.

“This is to inform members and public the House of Representatives will not resume on May 16. The next adjourned date will be May 23. This change is intended to allow members in the second batch partake in the induction of 10th National Assembly,” Danzaria said in the statement.

Except for a last minute change of plan due to the pressure on the president to abandon the request, the lawmakers are expected to put finishing touches to the president’s request immediately after their resumption, as it will be just a few days to the end of the administration.

President Buhari, in a letter, to Senate President Ahmad Lawan, last week, said the loan will be used to cushion the effect of subsidy removal on most vulnerable Nigerians.

The president said in the letter: “Please note that the federal executive council approved an additional loan facility to the tune of $800 million to be secured from the World Bank for the National Social Safety Net programme and the need to request your consideration and approval to ensure early implementation. Copy of FEC extract attached.

“The senate may wish to know that the programme is intended to expand coverage of shock responsive safety net support among the poor and vulnerable Nigerians. This will assist them in coping with basic needs.

“You may wish to note that the federal government of Nigeria, under the conditional cash transfer, will transfer the sum of N5,000 per month to 10.2 million poor and low income households for a period of six months, with a multiplier effect on about 60 million individuals.

“In order to guarantee the credibility of the process, digital transfers will be made directly to beneficiaries’ accounts and mobile wallets.

“The NASSP being a social intervention programme, will stimulate the informal sector, improve nutrition, health, education, and human capital development of beneficiaries’ households.”

Seun Kuti

By Ayodele Oni

The Police Service Commission, (PSC) has backed decision of the Inspector General of Police, (IGP) to take up legal action against afro beat musician, Seun, son of legendary musician, late Fela, who assaulted a policeman on duty.

PSC on Sunday, condemned the assault of a Police Officer in uniform and on official duty in Lagos by one Seun Kuti.

In a statement signed by the Commission’s Head, Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, the Commission commended the Inspector General of Police, Baba Usman Ahmed, for his prompt action in ordering the arrest and prosecution of Seun.

The PSC said that Kuti had obviously diminished the sanctity of the symbol of authority of the Nigerian nation.

The Commission demanded that the culprit be arraigned immediately and that the Inspector General must ensure that the matter is followed to its logical conclusion to restore public confidence in the Nigeria Police.

Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Solomon Arase, said that the Police was the lead Agency in internal security and in its ability to maintain law and order and also protect lives and properties.

He said no matter the offence the Police Officer committed, nobody, including Seun Kuti had the right to assault a Policeman in uniform and on official duty.

Dr. Arase frowned at the effontry of Seun to slap the Police Officer, insisting that Nigeria was not a Hobbesian state “where might is right.

“We must, as a civilized people, explore established channels of complaints against alleged infractions by law enforcement Officials rather than this uncouth behavior in assaulting the symbol of authority in our country.

“We look forward to the prompt prosecution of Seun to act as a deterrent to others of his ilk.”

He  commended the Police Officer for refusing to be provoked by the action of his aggressor, a development he said, would have been more fatal.

The PSC Chairman said it was unfortunate that at a time the Management of the Nigeria Police was dealing decisively with Officers that harassed, intimidated or assaulted civilians on  roads and work places, the same Police Officers has become victims of the actions of some uncultured elites.

He advised that the Police should use the present incident to set an example that this would never be tolerated in Nigeria, a country governed by laws, rules and regulations.

The Chairman maintained that the groundswell of public opinion against the conduct of the abuser was indicative of the love and respect Nigerians had for the law enforcement Officers.

According to him, this underscored the need for all Police Officers to continually respect the right of the populace and be professional in all their conduct.
