Bode George Meeting with APC Leaders

By Ayodele Oni

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, says it welcomes recent move by some Yoruba elders to reconcile Chief Bode George and the President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Some Yoruba elders, including Retired Justice Isola Olorunmibe, and the Leader of the Governance Advisory Council in Lagos State, Tajudeen Olusi, among others, recently paid a visit to Chief George.

The PDP chieftain clarified that the delegation came to apologize to him over past issues and sought his support for the President-elect.

The Organizing Secretary of  Afenifere, Kole Omololu said in Akure that Afenifere was delighted about the visit.

Omololu explained that the visit to Bode George was commendable and reasonable as it showed the promotion of unity among Yoruba sons and daughters.

According to him, a united Yoruba land, irrespective of political persuasions  will have a tremedious effect  “in achieving the desire goal of a true federalism,  devolution of power, state police and fiscal federalism.”

“We in Afenifere are very delighted about the visit of the elders in the land to one of the elders in the Yoruba land, Chief George,  the Atona of the source – Ile Ife.

“The elders see it as an aberration for two prominent Yoruba sons to be having misunderstanding and the elders in the land to be folding arms and be watching and doing nothing.

“So we want to commend the efforts of these Yoruba leaders and elders who deem it fit to pay Chief George a visit on this matter and we certainly hope that the laudable visit would be fruitful and beneficial to the entire Yoruba land.”

Unity Govt: Tinubu Woos Kwakwanso In France

President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly met with the presidential candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP. Rabiu Kwankwanso in a bid to solicit his support for his administration.

Tinubu will be sworn in on May 29 to succeed the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari.

The former Kano state came a distant fourth in the February 25 presidential election, won by Tinubu.

But the performance of his party in the last presidential and governorship elections has made him one of the most influential politicians in the country, some say.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, announced Tinubu winner of the competitive election, while Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP came second and third, respectively.

Abubakar and Obi have now challenged the result of the election at the Election Petition Tribunal seeking to overturn Tinubu’s victory.

Tinubu’s meeting with Kwakwanso, according to those privy to the meeting is to douse the tension arising from his declaration as the winner by INEC.

Apart from Kwakwanso, the former governor has also met with other prominent Nigerians, including traditional rulers with a view to get their support for his government.

For instance, some prominent Nigerians have called for the postponement of the May 29 swearing-in date, contending that the court should be allowed to make a judgment on whether Tinubu won the election before he takes power.

Others have also called for the enthronement of Interim National Government, ING, pending the determination  of election petitions.

With so much controversy surrounding his election, those watching the political situation in the country said the former Lagos state governor need the support of politicians like Kwankwanso to garner support for his government.

Recall that Kwakwanso, a former Minister of Defense surprised political pundits after his party won the Kano state governorship election, apart from securing the state and National Assembly legislative seats.

His party also won the presidential election in Kano state.

What is not clear yet is whether the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP chieftain will agree to work with the incoming All Progressives Congress, APC.

Mastercard Partners FCMB To Launch Contactless Tap On Phone Payment Solutions in Nigeria

0

Mastercard, in partnership with First City Monument Bank (FCMB) and NetPlusDotCom (NetPOS), has launched a contactless payment solution that enables consumers, merchants, and financial institutions to process payments seamlessly using Tap on Phone, also known as Soft POS. This eliminates physical contact with a device at the point of sale, thereby enabling consumers to make contactless payments quickly and easily without the need to carry physical cash.

With the Tap on Phone, merchants can use their Android smartphone or tablet to accept contactless payments without needing to invest in a separate hardware Point-of-Sale (POS) device. Tap on Phone works by enabling the device’s Near Field Communication (NFC) capabilities, allowing it to communicate with a customer’s contactless payment card. The customer taps their card on the merchant’s smartphone or tablet, and the payment is processed through the Mastercard network. Under the partnership, FCMB will serve as the acquirer Bank, while Netplus is the payment service provider.

“We are delighted to announce the launch of our innovative solution in Nigeria in partnership with First City Monument Bank. As a frontrunner in the digital payments industry, we recognize our responsibility to introduce cost-effective solutions that benefit everybody in the economy and facilitate the adoption of a cashless society for the collective benefit of all. This partnership is part of our commitment to connecting the millions of Nigerians into a world where digital connectivity is integrated into their daily lives, making their lives easier and simpler,” said Ebehijie Momoh, Country Manager & Area Business Head, West Africa at Mastercard.

This digital payment solution involves the utilization of Tap with PIN authentication. Customers are required to input a unique 4-digit PIN for both authentication and authorization before processing any transaction. This secure feature aims to provide an added layer of protection against potential fraud or unauthorized use. Furthermore, the transaction flow will follow the existing Point-of-Sale (POS) rails, with the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) acting as the central switch for seamless transaction processing.

Also speaking on the partnership and service, the Divisional Head, Payment and Solutions, FCMB, Mr Frank Atat, said:

“As almost all aspects of our lives become virtual, there is a need to continuously proffer convenient solutions that will cater to the transacting needs of our customers and Nigerians. Our partnership with Mastercard and Netplus to deploy the Tap on Phone contactless payment solution aligns with FCMB’s value as a customer-centric institution committed to providing innovative offerings that conveniently meet the evolving needs of individuals and businesses in a digitally changing world”.

On its part, NetPlusDotCom said, “At NetPOS, we are excited to partner with leading Financial Institutions – MasterCard and FCMB – to launch yet another innovative solution in Nigeria. With this platform, MSMEs who are otherwise excluded from Acceptance solutions will be able to leverage digital services to grow their business. We look forward to providing the needed support to drive the adoption of this solution in Nigeria and adjacent markets.”

This technology provides several benefits to consumers, including convenience, speed, security, and accessibility. Transactions are processed swiftly, reducing waiting times while providing a secure payment method that minimizes the risks associated with cash payments. This partnership is part of Mastercard’s commitment to connecting 1 billion individuals and 50 million micro and small merchants to the digital economy by 2025.

Seun Kuti in Police Net

By Akinwale Kasali

Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun of the Yaba Magistarte Court has ordered the Police to conclude its investigation on the assault by Seun Kuti on a Policeman last weekend on Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos.

During the 48 hours of Investigation by the Police, Seun Kuti would be remanded in Police Custody, the Magistrate stated.

Magistrate Olatunbosun reading out her ruling said she would not rely on police investigation hence she remanded the defendant for 48 hours in police custody.

She said, “Court has decided to override any public opinion and pass the judgment of the court.

“Following the remand application presented before the court, I am advising that the case file be duplicated and sent to the Directorate of public prosecutions within 72 hours.

“The defendant is hereby remanded for 48 hours in police custody to allow the police to conclude their investigation.

“After 48 hours, the defendant will be granted bail in the sum of N1m with two responsible sureties, a three-year tax payment receipt that is verifiable; one of the sureties must have a landed property within the court jurisdiction.”

Before taking this stance, the prosecution led by S. A Adebese and Morufu Animashaun prayed the court to remand the defendant for 21 days pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

However, Kuti’s counsel, led by Femi Falana, SAN, prayed the court to not remand his client, stating that they (the counsel) were not aware of the remand application.

The magistrate after listening to both parties requested five minutes of recess stating that she needed to deliberate on her own.

She however adjourned the case till May 23, 2023, for mention.

We Are Taking Steps To Impose Visa Restrictions On Individuals Involved in Undermining the Democratic Process During Nigeria’s 2023 Elections Cycle

0
Antony Blinken

By Antony J. Blinken, Secretary of State, USA

The United States is committed to supporting and advancing democracy in Nigeria and around the world. Today, I am announcing that we have taken steps to impose visa restrictions on specific individuals in Nigeria for undermining the democratic process during Nigeria’s 2023 elections cycle. These actions are specific to certain individuals and are not directed at the Nigerian people or the Government of Nigeria as a whole.

Under Section 212(a)(3)C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, these individuals will be subject to restrictions on visas to the United States under a policy covering those believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining democracy. These individuals have been involved in intimidation of voters through threats and physical violence, the manipulation of vote results, and other activity that undermines Nigeria’s democratic process.

The decision to take steps to impose visa restrictions reflects the continued commitment of the United States to support Nigerian aspirations to strengthen democracy and the Rule of Law.

My Critics On Zoning Arrangement For 10th National Assembly Are Moles In APC – Akeredolu

0

By Ayodele Oni

Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has descended on those criticizing him for speaking against the zoning arrangement for national assembly leadership without due consultation with stakeholders.

The Governor had described the zoning arrangement, which has been ratified by the president elect and leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as an injustice and unfair to some members of the party.

Akeredolu, who is chairman of Southern Governors Forum spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Richard Olatunde, in a statement on Tuesday describing his critics as anti party agents.

“The Governor speaks his mind no matter whose ox is gored. He is incurably unpretentious. Governor Akeredolu championed and led the struggle for Southern Presidency with courage and sincerity. His thrust was hinged on equality, fairness and Justice.

“He supported, openly, the President-Elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. When the Muslim/Muslim Ticket was becoming an albatross, he started moving from one Church to another to speak to Christians to embrace Tinubu’s candidacy.

“When Ahmed Lawan was reportedly endorsed as the Consensus candidate of the APC, Governor Akeredolu was the only Governor that rejected it openly.

“He also tackled the CBN Governor and the FG on the redesigned naira policy which created hardship for Nigerians and extended till the eve of the election.

“The Truth is, these attention-seeking politicians who have outlived their relevance have scored an offside goal.

“Writing joint press statements filled with lies and disinformation will not secure them appointment in Abuja.

“Pretending to be “good boys” after openly working for Atiku and the PDP in Ondo State, especially in Iju and Oka-Akoko will not resuscitate them from political oblivion.”

Seun And The Impunity Of Stardom

0

By Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN

I watched with shock, disbelief, bewilderment, amazement and chagrin, a viral video where Afrobeat rising star, who should otherwise be the product of a rich heritage of revolutionary struggles, patriotism and selflessness, descended on a cultured policeman, assaulting him, provoking him and in that process also humiliating him and the agency that he represents.

The barbarism of Seun Kuti’s unprovoked attacks on that policeman is totally condemnable, undeserving, egregious and a blatant violation of one of the most noble institutions of democracy. We cannot find any justification for that cruel and degrading treatment. Legally speaking, it constitutes grave assault on and a gross violation of section 34 of the 1999 Constitution, which states clearly that:

(1) Every individual is entitled to respect for the dignity of his person, and accordingly –

(b) no person shall be subject to torture or inhuman and degrading treatment.”

Culturally, I do not know anywhere in Yorubaland, where the junior corrects and upraids the elder, to the shameful extent that Seun Kuti arrogated to himself an inexistent power of rebuke, of correction and of censoring a law enforcement officer on lawful duty. It is simply unacceptable. Where did Seun get the training that he is the one better placed to correct an elder? Is he tapping from any other source different from the one that our revered and polished Fela did? Is he not a student of history, to know that his father, Fela, was one of the most successful activists of all times, correcting the ills of the society, holding governments accountable and advocating for democracy and good governance through his music? Did Seun ever hear Femi Kuti or Yeni Kuti, ever desecrating the institutions of democracy? Or is it Nike or Lande, all whom have kept the good name and reputation of their family? Is this the way Seun wants to avenge the brutal murder and assassination of Madam Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, whose blood flows in government house till date? How many of the “unknown soldiers” would Seun be able to slap and beat up in this dastardly manner?

The Ransome-Kuti family has a place in the rich history of Nigeria, through the indelible contributions of their matriarch, Madam Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, the selfless sacrifices of Professor Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, the tireless struggles of Dr. Bekololari Ransome-Kuti and of course the inimitable Abami Eda himself, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. They represented the best of nobility, excellence, patriotism and industry, which is why Nigerians hold them so dearly in their hearts. There is no place in that family for this malady.

From all accounts, Seun is well read, having passed through the prestigious University of Lagos. He is also well traveled, as an international artiste who has performed in several countries of the world. He is deemed to be well organized and should know the value placed upon institutions and their personnel, himself being the leader of the famed Egypt 80 Band. So he cannot claim not to know about civility and respect for the rule of law and due process. Before now, Seun had portrayed himself as an activist, an advocate of good governance and a model for the young generation.

What message then is he preaching to the same people and system that he has criticized so often? What was the basis of the #EndSars struggle for the eradication of all forms of human rights abuses by the police and other law enforcement agencies? Seun should be in the same age bracket with Mark Zuckerberg who is influencing the entire world positively. Without doubt, no form of gangsterism should be perpetrated or tolerated under the guise of youthful exorbitance or exuberance or else society will collapse and become unsafe for all lawful and peaceful persons who have no other “spirits” to depend upon like Seun, who has been busy promoting the uncensored consumption of weed and alcohol, all in the name of some undefined social crusade.

The defence of Seun for this uncultured display of arrogance is that the policeman attempted to kill himself and his family. He was careful not to elaborate on the circumstances and facts of the alleged attempt.

He claimed that he has the video of the attempt and that the policeman was wrong, has acknowledged his error and had even apologized to him in order to evade prosecution! What a world! Is Seun speaking to his fans in Kalakuta Republic/African Shrine? Or members of the Egypt 80 Band? The video that I saw showed Seun launching unprovoked verbal assault on a policeman that was calm and respectful, it showed an unrestrained young man castigating, threatening and humiliating an officer of the Federal Republic in the name of defending himself. The video showed Seun pushing the policeman around, daring him to do his worst and refusing to be placated by other motorists who stopped to broker peace. And it was on the Third Mainland Bridge, with the attendant consequences of the dangers to motorists, traffic congestion and other distractions.

The other day, it was Burna Boy, who stormed a night club in Lagos and after his acts physically assaulted a police man. Then again it was recently the turn of one Portable, who also assaulted a policeman. Should it be the other way round, for any policeman to dare beat up or assault a celebrity then the heavens would have fallen. This unfortunate event brings into focus the value and virtue of stardom, which dictate humility, gentleness, moderation and respect for people and institutions. No positive lesson can be passed from the assault of Seun against the policeman and no defence can be offered to diminish the seriousness of the offence thus committed. And this is why the decision of the police to investigate this incidence is very laudable and encouraging. If found culpable, Seun should not walk away with this barbaric act.

But beyond Seun, Burna Boy and Portable, this event has also brought into limelight the need for the improvement of the welfare and working conditions of police officers nationwide to avoid this ugly situation whereby they become vulnerable victims of servitude, abuses and debasement. We have heard of stories of police officers who were treated as maids by the VIPs to whom they were attached, the recent one being that of the policewoman in Ilorin who was beaten and battered for allegedly refusing to run menial errands for her mistress. Situations in which police officers have to beg, crow and scout for money to pay the school fees of their children, money to take care of their health or even to buy uniform and the basic implements of their trade are totally unacceptable. Nigeria does not have up to one million police personnel so why is it so difficult to cater for the ones we have, who are daily sacrificing their lives to keep us safe?

The rise to stardom should not and cannot be the justification for unbridled brigandage and infantile gangsterism such as we saw in the video circulating of and concerning Seun. Or else it would then mean that those in the entertainment world should take urgent steps to enact such rules of engagement that will guarantee respect for other members of the society that they interact with on a daily basis. Fame cannot be the reason for assaulting a policeman and those employed to defend us cannot suddenly become victims of youthful aggression. If we condemned police brutality we must also dissociate ourselves from civilian rascality or blatant criminality.

It is commendable that Seun has surrendered himself to the police as he promised. The nation eagerly awaits the outcome of the investigation of the police on this matter while commending the maturity of the policeman involved in this unfortunate incident.

Fani-Kayode Flays Visa Ban On Selected Nigerian Politicians

0

By Ayodele Oni

Former Aviation minister, Femi Fani-Kayode has described visa ban clamped on some Nigerian politicians by the United States (US) as empty threat.

The US had on Monday announced that some politicians that engaged in rigging during last general elections in Nigeria have been placed on visa ban.

Fani-Kayode in a statement on Tuesday said those at the helm of administration presently in the US are equally guilty of electoral fraud.

“Those that have imposed a visa ban on some “selected Nigerians” for allegedly “undermining democracy” and “rigging elections” are perfectly within their rights to do so because it is their country and they can do as they please.

“We should loose no sleep over that because the Nigerian people, a great and sovereign people who belong to a great and sovereign nation, spoke loudly and clearly and made their legitimate choices during the course of a set of free, fair and credible elections which have, to the glory of God, produced a President-elect and a set of Governors-elect who will all be duly sworn-in according to law on the 29th of this month.

“Wherever any of those elections may have been rigged or democracy undermined can only be properly determined by our election tribunals and courts after all the facts and evidence have been adduced, examined and determined and not by any distant and/or partisan foreign government or power.

“It is also my view that foreign policy, which ought to be based on the principle of equality of nations and conducted on the basis of reciprocity, requires the Nigerian Federal Government to consider the possibility of doing the same to nationals of those that have implemented and announced this measure and issue a visa ban to any foreign citizen or member of any corporate entity or institution that may have indulged in undermining democracy or rigging elections in either their own or any other country in the world over the last 25 years.

“Courage, equity, justice, fairness and mutual respect demands no less.

“The irony of it all is that the President whose Government has issued a visa ban on selected Nigerians for rigging has himself been accused of the most blatant and shameful election rigging in the history of their country by no less than his predecessor in office and millions of his fellow country men. That is a pertinent observation and a relevant point.

“The truth is that the world is becoming less tolerant of double standards, double speak, neo-colonialism, pseudo-imperialism, the hypocrisy and interference of big, rich and powerful countries, who believe that they own and rule the world, in the affairs of less rich and less powerful ones and the practice of what Lord Palmerston, Great Britain’s 18th century Foreign Minister impudently and arrogantly enunciated and described as the implementation of a ‘paternalistic foreign policy’.

“African leaders generally and Nigerian leaders particularly are not mice. They do not scramble and scatter at the sound of a gong and they do not quiver or wet their pants in the face of a gratuitous insult, threat or storm.

“Gone are the days when Africans or their leaders shiver under their bedsheets and seek validation from more often than not ill-informed and ill-advised foreign Government officials with local vested interests and misplaced, malevolent intentions.

“Gone are the days when we sold our souls for a pittance or our people as slaves for mirrors and a bottle of “fire water” whisky.

“We are no longer configured to fear mere mortals. We have learnt that God alone is to be feared. That He alone is our shield and defender. That He alone is our glory.

“That He alone is the lifter of our heads. That He alone rules in the affairs of men and that He alone forges the destiny of nations.

“No Nation on earth, no matter how rich and powerful, can thwart the will of the God of all flesh for our people or undermine the purpose of the Lord of creation for our country. All the visa bans in the world cannot change that.”
