President Tinubu Seeks National Assembly’s Nod For N500 Billion For Subsidy Palliatives

By Ayodele Oni

President Bola Tinubu has written to the National Assembly seeking amendment to the 2022 supplementary appropriation Act to allow the Federal Government source N500 billion for palliative to cushion the effect of subsidy removal.

President Tinubu had, in his inauguration address, announced that the Federal Government could no longer subsidize importation of fuel, especially petrol into the country.

President Tinubu’s declaration that “subsidy is gone” is neither a new development nor an action of his new administration.

He was merely communicating the status quo, considering that the previous administration’s budget for fuel subsidy was planned and approved to last for only the first half of the year.

“Effectively, this means that by the end of June, the Federal Government will be without funds to continue the subsidy regime, translating to its termination.

The President also promised to re-channel the funds previously devoted to the payment of subsidies into better investments that will cushion the effects of the removal on the general public, especially the poor of the poor.

“This includes but is not limited to investments in public infrastructure, education, healthcare and jobs that will materially improve the lives of millions of Nigerians and increase their earning potential.”

During its inaugural meeting in Abuja, Nigeria’s Economic Council, (NEC) under the chairmanship of the vice president, Kashim Shettina was directed by the president to urgently address the issue of Palliatives to cushion the hardship occasioned by subsidy withdrawal.

Ondo State Government Angry Over Depressing Reports On Akeredolu

The Ondo State Government is angry over depressing reports in the Media on the state of health of the State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Mrs Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, the State Government dismissed the reports as grossly unfair and exaggerated.

It condemned, in particular, the report which attributed  to the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Abdullahi Adamu, which stated that  Akeredolu, is in “a state of extreme incapacity and hospitalised.”

Commissioner Ademola-Olateju, said that  the report was at once mischievous, wicked and insensitive sponsored by “desperate politicians.”

A National Newspaper had quoted the APC Chairman Senator Abdullahi Adamu, as saying at a meeting with APC State Chairmen that  Governor Akeredolu is incapacitated and hospitalised.

Ademola-Olateju asked members of the public, especially, Ondo people,  to ignore the report and explained that the National Chairman was quoted out of context.

The statement said:

“The attention of Ondo State Government has been drawn to a report, credited to the Chairman of the APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, in the 11th July 2023.

“The headline, ‘Akeredolu in state of extreme incapacity, hospitalised’, bore a tinge of the usual mischievous, wicked and insensitive reportage, sponsored by desperate politicians”

“The Chairman of the APC in Ondo State, Hon. Ade Adetimehin, who attended the meeting, has debunked the report as untrue and totally disconnected from the statement of the Chairman at the event.

“The National Chairman  was indeed excited at the reports on the rate of recovery of the Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, and urged all those present at the meeting to pray for his quick return.

“It, therefore, smacks of mischief and unabashed abandonment of professional ethics for a reporter to present this gross misrepresentation, a mischievous twist, as news.

“At no time did the Chairman mention that the Governor was in a state of ‘extreme incapacity’. He is, evidently, not in any critical state that should warrant this clearly reprehensible conduct as he still sent a post to the Executive Council Committee platform yesterday.

“Members of the public are advised to ignore this news as the contents therein exist in the realm of the imagination of workers of iniquity.

“Mr. Governor is NOT incapacitated. He will return to his duty as soon as the doctors certify him fully fit to do so.”

Akeredolu has been on medical leave for over a month with the full approval of the State House of Assembly. He transferred power to his Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, in an acting capacity.

Governor Akeredolu on Monday informed the state lawmakers of his desire to extend his medical leave to allow him to recuperate after the medical attention.

Akeredolu in the letter stated that the request was a sequel to doctors’ advice on the need for him to take adequate rest after recuperating and promised to return soon after recuperation.

The Nigeria Movie Industry, Nollywood has lost one of its Veteran Actresses, Cynthia Okereke, to the cold hands of death.

The death of the Actress was made public in various social media platforms Wednesday morning by Filmmaker, Joseph Okechukwu, who was on the verge of sending the late actress a flight ticket for a movie production in the United States of America.

Disclosing her death, Okechukwu took to his social media platform and wrote, “ REST IN PEACE, Nwanyi oma. I’m shattered beyond words. The fact that I was about to pay for your flight ticket to come finish what we started only to hear you went to be with Lord just last night is one of the toughest things I’ve ever had to deal with in recent times. I pray I’m able to recover from this shock. Life is really just a mist. One minute you have it, the next you don’t.

“For the more than 20 years that I’ve known you, you’ve been such an amazing, decent and lovely soul to be around. I never imagined you’d exit so unceremoniously. Words fail me.

“Sleep on, Cynthia. May your gentle soul rest on till we meet again in glory.”

It would be recalled that the late Cynthia Okereke was kidnapped 12 months ago in Enugu, spending days in the kidnappers den before he was released.

Though details of his release then was not disclosed or how much ransom was paid before she was freed alongside some of her other colleagues.

She would be sorely missed by her colleagues in the Make-believe industry for her good interpretation of roles.

Gov Akeredolu’s Absence, Ondo State Now On Autopilot – SDP

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ondo State has observed that the continued absence of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has put the State on autopilot.

The party, in a statement expressed disappointment that the Deputy Governor, who is now the acting Governor has grossly demonstrated that he is unprepared and incompetent to hold sway.

The statement on Wednesday, signed by the Chairman of the party, Stephen Adewale, pointed out that most worrisome is a situation whereby some of those in Akeredolu’s Government have taken the advantage of the Governor’s absence to launch Governorship ambition, ahead next year’s election.

“Let us quickly note that since Akeredolu has turned over leadership to his Deputy Governor in an acting capacity, Akeredolu’s health should not be a topic of public discourse.

“However, the APC and its overambitious gangs made it their business to keep the Ondo people talking about Akeredolu because they all demonstrate that, in the absence of the Governor, they will only act in their own self-interest.

“Thanks to the revelation we got from the series of accusations and counter- accusations made by the various overambitious groups within Ondo APC, we now understand that APC has lost control of its members as the party watched helplessly while the political darts continued to fly around.

“For reasons we considered brazenly self-serving, the dramatis personae are brazenly altering the course of Ondo State’s history in a manner that might leave the state permanently on edge.

“So far, the acting governor has demonstrated that he is not prepared to live up to the expectation of his assigned office.

“Nothing much has changed since the Governor handed over to him. Pensioners who served our beloved state during their productive years are perishing in poverty, and the acting governor did nothing to make progress on their owed gratuities.

“While Aiyedatiwa continued to turn a blind eye, Polytechnic lectures downed tools over their fourteen months unpaid salaries.

“The other day, the Acting Governor expressed concern on the poor reading culture in the state. The questions that beg for answer is that what does Aiyedatiwa expect from a state with a shortage of teachers for its public school?

“The Government failed to hire new teachers while failing to fill the voids left by the departing teachers. As a result, the available teachers are now required to teach more than five arms of classes each day in JSS and SSS classes.

“APC was never intended to produce incorruptible leaders, and there is nothing anyone can do to change that.

“This is evidenced by the level of shamelessness displayed by the overambitious APC politicians since Akeredolu’s health crisis came to light, as well as the lengths to which they have gone in demonstrating that they are willing to sacrifice the progress of the state for their own ambition.

“Voting them out entirely in 2024 is the best course of action.”

Ogun CP Issues Quit Notice To Cultists

0
The Ogun state police command has issue a one month notice for cultists in the state to surrender.
The warning was made on Tuesday by the New Police Commissioner in the state, Abiodun Alamutu, who said the one month amnesty period will be followed with a total clampdown on the cultists.
The new police boss said his men are prepared to rid the Gateway state of all criminality, urging cultists to surrender their arms immediately.
According to him, policeman will be despatched across the state from August to arrest cultists, adding that those that were innocently lured into their membership should take the window of opportunity now opened to them.
Alamutu said, The Command has opened a window of amnesty to such people. So they should renounce their membership of these groups and surrender all arms and ammunition in their custody.
“They have a period of one month to do that. After the period of one month from today 11th July 2023, there is going to be a total clamp down on all known and unknown cultists who are perpetrating heinous crimes in the State.
“The Command will not fold its arms while some unscrupulous elements will be making life unbearable for the good and law-abiding indigenes and residents of Ogun State.”
Efforts in the past by security agencies to rid the state of cultists, has mostly proved ineffective, as the menace continued to spread, even, among secondary and primary schools in the state.

Shettima spoke when he met with the leadership of the House of representatives, led by the Speaker Tajudeen Abass.
He, however, said the country will not experience meaningful development without unity, calling on Nigerians to jettison religious and ethnic affiliations to rally behind the government for transformation.
The vice president comment was contained in a statement issued by the Director of Information in his office,  Olusola Abiola, quoted Shettima as saying that President Tinubu hit the ground running first day in office.

“The state of affairs in our country requires that we coalesce into a single force irrespective of differences in political affiliations or religious persuasions, tribal and sectional backgrounds because what binds us together supersedes what divides us.
“It is very difficult to remove the building blocks holding this country together. We are a kaleidoscope of colours. We are essentially one people tied to a common destiny, so, let’s work together. We need this country to work and this government is willing to work for the good of the nation.”
After his assumption of office on May 29, 2023, President Tinubu has been applauded by some well meaning Nigerians for taking critical decisions, including the removal of the fuel subsidy, appointment of new service chiefs, the unification of the foreign exchange, amongst others.
There are still other critical areas that requires his urgent attention, according to his critics.
