Daniel Bwala: History Keeps Receipts

We have read the latest statement issued by Daniel Bwala in the aftermath of his rather embarrassing interview with a mixture of suppressed disgust and embarrassment — not for ourselves, but for the sheer enthusiasm with which he parades falsehoods as though repetition could somehow elevate them into truth.

Bwala’s sudden discovery of courage and rhetorical flourish is rather amusing, especially from someone whose political trajectory has been defined less by conviction and more by opportunistic merchandising of allegiance.

Since he now appears eager to rewrite history, it is necessary to refresh his memory.

We remain in possession of his message requesting that the Atiku Media Team issue a press statement claiming that President Tinubu and his associates were threatening his life. He was quite insistent that we amplify that narrative at the time. We declined deliberately because we recognised it for what it was: a frivolous and opportunistic attempt at political theatre, consistent with his long-established penchant for turning politics into a marketplace where loyalty is traded like a commodity.

He should therefore spare Nigerians the moral lectures about courage and conviction. The record speaks for itself.

His attempt to recast the Mehdi Hassan interview as some heroic act of intellectual bravery is equally amusing. Anyone who watched that exchange objectively saw something quite different. The interviewer methodically dismantled the talking points he came armed with and exposed, one after the other, the contradictions between his past statements and his present posture.

Bwala was confronted with his own words about President Tinubu — statements he once made with remarkable certainty — only to retreat into the tired refuge that “it was politics.” But it is both wicked and morally bankrupt to dismiss matters of grave national consequence as mere politics. The wastage of thousands of Nigerian lives to insecurity over the past two years cannot be brushed aside with that cynical refrain. To trivialise such human tragedy as “politics” is nothing short of wickedness, an admission of abysmal failure, and sheer madness.

He struggled visibly to reconcile those statements with his current role defending the same administration he once criticised so vigorously. When confronted with documented criticisms from credible organisations regarding governance failures, he resorted not to evidence or argument but to the lazy dismissal of calling them “fake news.”

At several points, the interviewer’s persistence reduced his defence of both his principal and the government’s record to a series of evasions and rhetorical detours.

What Nigerians witnessed was not the fearless demolition of hostile journalism he now imagines, but the uncomfortable spectacle of a spokesperson struggling to reconcile shifting loyalties with inconvenient facts. In truth, the interview tore through the carefully constructed narrative he attempted to present and left both his arguments and the government’s talking points in tatters.

Bwala boasts about being willing to appear before any interviewer anywhere in the world. But the challenge is not appearing on every television platform across the globe; the real challenge is defending the indefensible. Even if he were granted a prime interview on Heaven Times, the arguments he would carry there would still collapse under the weight of their own contradictions — half-baked, half-foolish, and wholly unconvincing.

How does anyone credibly defend a government that has turned forgery into an instrument of statecraft and gathered around itself a nest of professional forgers? And what kind of government hires its former fiercest critic as its media dry cleaner? Predictably, Mr. Bwala did yesterday what he has always done — he did not clean the garment; he tore it.

Since Bwala now appears eager to posture as a public intellectual, it may also be necessary to address something far more elementary.

It is always risky when a man who cannot count water begins to count his arguments as facts.

How does a “lawyer,” one so eager to sermonise about competence, manage to betray such basic illiteracy in the English language?

Water, for his information, is an uncountable noun. One does not say “this is a water.” One says “this is water” or “a glass of water.”

But perhaps precision — whether in language or in truth — has never really been his strongest suit.

What remains astonishing is not merely the elasticity of his political loyalties, but the gusto with which he now attempts to launder them as principle.

History, unfortunately for him, keeps receipts.

And so do we.

Daniel Bwala: We Know His Track Record

By Kingsley Moghalu

The Daniel Bwala interview with Mehdi Hassan on @AlJazeera ‘s Head to Head program was a disaster of gargantuan proportions for Nigeria as a country, for President Tinubu’s administration, and for Bwala himself. Of these three, the last is the least important, because Bwala’s track record speaks for itself.

The interview made a spectacle of Nigeria, not just because of the reach of the program globally, but also the format in which there was a global audience in the room itself. What will EACH of those people think about Nigeria after such a fact-based shredding of the country’s leadership and its performance? It was a sad commentary on Nigeria’s political culture in which there are no beliefs, no policies, no ideology, just crass opportunism and the battle for political power.  Turn-coatism is “it”.

Second, the fact that Bwala, given his record, is sent out to speak for the President of Nigeria on the international stage says much about the standards by which government in Nigeria recruits people for specific roles. In that universe “loyalty”, fleeting though it may be, is all that counts. Competence doesn’t. Mediocrity reigns.

Thirdly, why appoint former attack dogs of the political opposition as spokespersons and Ambassadors for the administration simply because they have “defected”?  The baggage such individuals carry (especially when they did not espouse principled opposition that may later change, as sometimes happens in politics, but rather used incendiary and personalized attacks on President Tinubu)renders such persons  lacking in credibility in representational roles. Bwala was left trying to eat his words with bare-faced lies!

I think there are people who could be far more credible spokesmen and women for Nigeria’s government, even with all its underperformance in governance. At least, the discussion will focus on the actual track record of the government, not on the government spokesman’s prior condemnations of that track record.

It was a sad day for our country. I’ve received several calls from friends from various countries around the world. All were in shock and felt sorry for our country to be put in such a spot. So many people are waiting and hoping for when Nigeria will “wake up” and take its rightful place under the sun. The citizens of Nigeria are brilliant, hardworking and respected all over the world, breaking barriers and achieving feats in various spheres. The government and incompetent governance of Nigeria by its politicians remains a sorry tale.

Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has expressed confidence in the ability of the five newly sworn-in commissioners to perform effectively, noting that their successful screening had already demonstrated their readiness for the task ahead.

The governor spoke as he swore-in five commissioners recently screened and confirmed by the Rivers State House of Assembly, urging them to give their best in the service of the state.

The swearing-in ceremony took place shortly after the Lawmakers concluded what the governor described as one of the most rigorous screening exercises for nominees to the State Executive Council.

The newly inaugurated commissioners are Mr. Tonye Bellgam, Professor Temple Nwofor, Dr. Peters Nwagor, Mr. Lekue Kenneth and Sir Amairigha Edward Hart.

Administering the Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Office on the commissioners was His Worship David D. Ihua-Maduenyi, Chief Registrar of the High Court of Rivers State.

He stated that the rigorous process conducted by the Assembly had clearly defined their responsibilities and expectations as members of the State Executive Council.

According to him, there was no need for further instructions beyond what had already been communicated during the screening.

“I believe that going through one of the most rigorous screening exercises is enough to say that for those of you who succeeded, you are fit and ready to deliver to our dear state.

“So there is no further charge. The screening was the charge. I wish you the best, as I don’t expect anything less than the best from you.”

Governor Fubara also expressed optimism that the commissioners would contribute meaningfully to the development agenda of the state and support the administration’s efforts to deliver good governance and improved services to the people.

The inauguration of the commissioners is expected to strengthen the State Executive Council and enhance policy implementation across various sectors of governance in the state.

Observers believe the appointments will further boost the administration’s capacity to drive development programmes and address key challenges affecting residents of the state.

Following the delay in the compensation of the Family of Onosereba Omhonria, the Child killed during an operation involving officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, with the brother, Eromonsele Omhonria sustaining eye injury, the Senate Committee on Legislative Compliance has slammed the NDLEA.

Expressing its concern over what it described as the slow response of the NDLEA in implementing the National Assembly’s directive to compensate the family of Fidelis Omhonria, Father of the affected Children.

The tragic operation left a child dead and another severely injured in the eye.

The issue came up during a review meeting between members of the Commmittee and officials of the NDLEA.

The Committee’s Vice Chairman and Acting Chairman, Senator Ede Dafinone, who presided over the session, criticised the Agency for failing to fully comply with the Senate’s resolution nearly three years after the incident.

The directive was issued after the tragic event that led to the death of two-year-old Onosereba Omhonria, while his younger brother, Eromonsele Omhonria, sustained a gunshot injury to the eye during an operation involving officers of the NDLEA.

Lawmakers at the meeting warned that the prolonged delay in executing the directive could undermine public trust in legislative resolutions and the broader pursuit of justice for victims.

Senator Dafinone reiterated the committee’s commitment to ensuring that the agency complies with the directive without further delay.

He also noted that effective legislative oversight remains essential in holding government institutions accountable.

To fast-track the process, the committee advised the NDLEA to formally engage the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation to explore legal options for accessing confiscated assets in Government Custody as a means of compensating the affected family.

The committee explained that the meeting was convened to assess progress made so far and identify practical steps toward resolving the matter.

Members stressed that the rights and welfare of citizens must remain a priority in law enforcement operations.

The lawmakers also reassured Nigerians of the National Assembly’s determination to ensure justice for the Omhonria family and called for urgent steps to secure adequate medical treatment for the injured child, Eromonsele, in order to help preserve his sight while the family awaits full compliance with the Senate’s directive.

Abdulrahman Mohammed: Remains PDP National Chairman

By Ayodele Oni

In the wake of defections to other parties by governors, Chairman Caretaker Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Abdulrahman Mohammed has clarified that only the committee is constitutionally empowered to present candidates for next year’s general elections.

The clarification comes after some governors elected on the platform of the party, for first time, defected to other parties to seek reelection for second term following unabated crisis which has caused division in the party.

Among the governors is Ademola Adeleke, of Osun state who decamped to Accord Party to seek reelection along with some lawmakers in the state.

Addressing members of the Board of Trustees, (BOT) of the party in Abuja on Wednesday, Mohammed confirmed that a fresh convention would hold following Court of Appeal judgement which declared as illegal the earlier one held in Ibadan.

The chairman stated that “Yesterday, the National Caretaker Working Committee, led by my humble self were at the National Stadium to inspect the venue of our National Convention.

“We have conducted Ward Congresses and Local Government successfully

Congresses. Shortly, we shall conduct State Congresses in the affected States.

“I want to most sincerely thank our leaders for the platform and support given to the National Caretaker Working Committee under my leadership. We are deeply grateful for this opportunity.

“Consequently, you are all aware of the judgment delivered by the Appeal Court, and the Court delivered judgment on 9 Appeals in our favour, and I want to use this opportunity to appreciate our legal team, Leaders, party, members and supporters for their encouragement, guidance and prayers.

“May I emphasise that the National Caretaker Working Committee remains the only national leadership recognised by law and the party.

“The National Caretaker Working Committee is the only legitimate body that can present candidates in the build-up to the 2027 general elections.

“As such, I urge all stakeholders, party leaders, party members and supporters to rally round the National Caretaker Working Committee as we prepare to approach activities towards the 2027 general elections.

“The Court has spoken once again that the rule of law must prevail in our party’s internal affairs.

“However, as we proceed with the preparations towards our National Convention, we shall wait for the Certified True Copy of the judgments by the Court of Appeal to prepare ourselves for further defence at the Supreme Court, if the need arises.

“I want to call on all party stakeholders, leaders and members to unite ourselves for the betterment of our great party. Enough of litigations that will delay our activities towards the 2027 general elections and off season elections.”

I Cannot Say Which Is Better, The Existence Or Non-existence Of The National Assembly – Senator Ali Ndume

Senator Ali Ndume

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Senator representing Borno South Senatorial District, Ali Ndume, has passed a damning verdict on the National Assembly.

The Senator, in an interview with the Dan’Uwa Rano TV, said the Federal Legislators have completely abdicated their oversight responsibilities, to become an appendage of the Executive arm of Government.

According to him, the core mandate of the Legislative arm-oversight functions has collapsed under the weight of excessive executive patronage.

He expressed serious concern over the inabilities of  both Chambers of the National Assembly to live up to their  expected functions of scrutinizing executive activities as well as keeping them on their toes.

Senator Ndume known for his criticisms of some of the polices of the All Progressive Congress

-led Government despite being a member of the ruling party decried the tendency by National Assembly to approve executive proposals and polices without due scrutiny.

“There is no oversight at the National Assembly anymore. We are doing nothing. The way the National Assembly is functioning amounts to nothing.

“And if you ask me, I don’t know which is better between its ( the National Assembly’s )  existence and non-existence. Yes, I am one of them. But we are not living up to our responsibilities”, Ndume stated.

However, he insisted that the National Assembly as uninspiring as it is not to be blamed for the woes of the country.

Rather, he largely  blamed the problems besetting the country on the  erosion of societal values.

According to him, the leadership of any society mirrors the  character and values of that particular society.

Buttressing his position with religious teachings,  Ndume maintained that the conditions of a people will not change until they change their ways.

“Allah says He does not change the condition of a people until they change what is within them,  meaning if the society is righteous, their leaders tend to be righteous”, Ndume added.

Lagos Assembly  Recommends Relocation Of Makoko Residents To Epe

By Akinwale Kasali

Respite may have come for residents of Makoko, Oko Agbon and Sogunro whose houses were demolished by the Lagos State Government. The Lagos State House of Assembly has recommended their relocation to Agbowa area of Epe, Lagos State.

The Assembly’s Public Affairs Directorate stated that the recommendation followed the adoption of a report by the House Committee on Rules and Business during Plenary on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the resolution followed a petition addressed to the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, titled, “Urgent Appeal Regarding Ongoing Mass Forced Eviction and Illegal Demolition Threatening Tens of Thousands in Makoko, Oko-Agbon and Sogunro Communities.”

Presenting the report during plenary at the Committee of the Whole, the Chairman of the Committee on Rules and Business, Hon. Noheem Adams, explained that the Committee arrived at its conclusions after engaging the petitioners in five separate meetings and conducting an oversight visit with relevant government officials, agencies, and representatives of the affected communities,” the statement read.

The statement  noted that the demolition exercise carried out by the state government displaced many residents, including the elderly, women and children, while homes and properties were destroyed.

According to the Committee, the affected waterfront communities depend largely on fishing as their primary source of livelihood and have historically lived on the water because of the nature of their occupation.

The committee also observed that living conditions in Makoko and the surrounding areas deteriorated significantly after the demolition, leading to environmental and health concerns as well as heightened safety risks.

Following the findings, it was recommended that Governor Babajide  Sanwo-Olu to  direct the Special Adviser on E-GIS to vet the enumeration report submitted by the Makoko, Sogunro and Oko-Agbon communities.

“The Committee further recommended that the government relocate the remaining residents of Makoko, Sogunro and Oko-Agbon to a proposed low-cost housing estate to be constructed in Agbowa area of the State, where they can continue their fishing activities,” the statement added.

The Special Adviser on Research, Media and Documentation to the Speaker, Speaker, Adeshina Oyetayo, confirmed the development.

The recommendation by the Assembly comes against the backdrop of a controversial demolition exercise carried out by the Lagos State Government in late December 2025 and early January 2026, targeting “illicit structures” in the Makoko, Oko‑Agbon and Sogunro waterfront communities near the Third Mainland Bridge.

The demolition led to the displacement of thousands of residents, leading to widespread protest from community members and civil society groups who described the demolition as heavy‑handed and demanded clear plans for resettlement and compensation.

Traders Protest Against Alleged Takeover Of Lagos International Trade Fair Complex

By Akinwale Kasali

Activities at the popular Lagos International Trade Fair Complex was disrupted, as Traders Protest against the alleged takeover of the Market Management by the Lagos State Government.

The aggrieved Traders raised concerns about the implications of the planned takeover of the Market Management, stating that unnecessary new levies and taxes could affect their businesses.

Some of the Traders insisted that the complex is a federal facility and called for further consultations before any changes to its Management structure are implemented.

The wide protest by the Traders led to the closure of shops across the complex, leaving hundreds of traders gathered around parks and garages within the market premises as discussions continued.

The ASPANDA Market within the complex—one of the largest spare parts markets in Lagos—was among the sections affected by the shutdown, as vehicular movement was restricted.

The protest had began early in the morning by locking up their shops and stalls to draw attention to their concerns over the proposed changes.

One of the traders who claimed anonymity said, “We are not against development, but we are concerned about the possible levies and taxes that may be introduced if the management structure changes”.

Jumoke Oduwole, Nigeria’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole, had visited the market during the day as part of efforts to engage with traders and encourage the reopening of the complex.

Before commencing her tour of the market, the minister urged that the gates of the complex be opened to traders, stating that her visit was aimed at interacting with stakeholders and supporting the smooth conduct of business activities.
