The Governor disclosed that his administration has concluded plans to rejuvenate the State’s economy with practicable economic activities that will impart positively on the citizenry.

EFCC Says Former Gov Mattawale Is Having Issues, Yet To Be Declared Wanted

By Ayodele Oni

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) has clarified that, for now, it has not declared former Zamfara Governor Bello Matawalle wanted, but that the former governor is having issues with the Commission.

The Commission on Sunday in a statement by its Head, Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, was reacting to media report that the former governor has been declared wanted.

The statement reads, ‘’The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been drawn to a report, entitled, Alleged N70b Fraud: EFCC Declares Ex-Zamfara Governor Matawalle Wanted.

“The report, appears and purports that the Commission had declared a former Zamafara State governor, Bello Matawalle wanted and requested the Department of State Service, DSS, to arrest him, “anywhere he is seen”.

“Without prejudice to the case involving the former governor, the report is incorrect as the Commission has yet to declare Matawalle wanted or solicit the assistance of any Agency, including the DSS, to effect his arrest.

“The Commission has standard procedure for declaring persons wanted and communicating same to the public, not through faceless security sources.”

Mattawale had accused the former chairman of the commission, Mr Bawa of allegedly demanding from him a bribe running to million dollars.

Breaking: Imo: Tsunami Hits PDP; SWC Members Resign En Masse, Dump The Party, Blames SamDaddy

By Charles Igbo

For the Imo State Branch of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Sunday, June 18, 2023, is a sad day. It marks, almost, the end of the once flourishing party in the State.

Members of the Party’s State Working Committee, SWC, have resigned from  their offices and dumped the party. What took place is a tsunami.

At a Press Conference in Owerri, seven of them, including the Deputy Chairman, Sir Martins Ejiogu, the cerebral State Secretary, Hon. (Nze) Ray Emeana, the Woman Leader, Chief (Mrs) Maria Mbakwe, the Youth Leader  Greg Nwadike, State Publicity Secretary, Collins Opuruozor, State Treasurer, Barr. Josiah Eze, and State Vice Chairman, Orlu Zone, Barr. Chibuisi Obido, threw in the towel.

Said the officers after they listed a litany of woes which befell the Party lately: “In view of the foregoing and many other shocking discoveries which will soon be made public, we, the undersigned members of the Imo State Working Committee of the PDP, have resolved to resign our various positions in the Party and dump the Party en masse.”

One of reason they adduced for their action is the Party’s National Secretary/Governorship Candidate in the upcoming November 11 Governorship Election, Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu, popular as Samdadday.

They alleged that he used his office at the national level to destroy the Party in the State. For instance, they alleged that he sponsors thugs against SWC members, sends them to vandalise the State Headquarters, lies against the officers and accuses them of embezzlement of funds for which they had been exposed to physical attacks and assassination attempts.

They, also, alleged that he foisted himself as the Governorship candidate of the Party, and without any consultations, picked a running mate. The morale of PDP loyalists and members has been reduced to zero, they alleged,  triggering the dumping of the Party by a number of high profile members because of Samdadday.

Their action, they disclosed, is just the beginning of the fall of the PDP. They said soon, only Samdadday will remain in the Party.

“We have, today  opened the floodgate of resignations and defections, and in the next couple of weeks, there will be only Senator Anyanwu left in the Party”, they said.

Following is the full text of the Press Conference dated June 18, 2023.

World Press Conference on the Mass Resignation of Members of the Imo State Working Committee of the PDP

“Since 2020 when this Working Committee took over the administrative cockpit of the PDP in Imo State, we have evolved a tradition of being upfront with you as members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm about all issues that trouble our dear State. We have, through such interactions, inspired faith in a better Imo realized through good governance and democratic norms.

“Today, unfortunately, is not for such engagements. In unequivocal terms, we announce to you that the PDP in Imo State has now been damaged beyond redemption by the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu (Samdadday), and the Party is at last moving irreversibly to its terminus.

“It is necessary we remind you that in the last three years, this Working Committee has built a very strong, formidable and enviable PDP in Imo State. To enable the Party realize its promise of being a truly democratic entity, we envisioned the need to expand the internal democratic space by forming nearly five thousand chapters across all the polling units in the State. We took the Party to the people, and that made us the darling of Imo people. We accomplished this task despite our lean resources as an opposition. No other political party has attained this feat in Nigeria.

“More so, we institutionalized the culture of accountability in party administration, and demonstrated a readiness to govern and reform Imo.

“But, since Senator Anyanwu became the National Secretary of the Party, he has never relented in deploying the powers of his office to fight members of this Working Committee and intimidate even ordinary members of the Party. Endless strife, mindless wars and erosion of all democratic values and principles have now defined and defiled Imo PDP.

“Day after day, Senator Anyanwu still sponsors his very few loyalists to cook up puerile petitions against us and flood the National Secretariat of the Party with such inanities. On the basis of those contrivances, he has continued to threaten to dissolve the Party in Imo State, even after we have defeated him at the Supreme Court. Samdadday has remained unrelenting and unrepentant in his destructive agenda.

“Gentlemen of the Press, it is heartbreaking to inform you that some of us in the State Working Committee have severally escaped assassination attempts because of the wicked lies which our National Secretary sold to his violent supporters, that we misappropriated Party funds.

“Yet, it was he, Senator Anyanwu, that sent his aides from Abuja to steal the materials for last year’s congresses of the Party, thereby creating a stalemate that gulped all our resources through multiple and controversial exercises and the appeasement of multiple stakeholders so as to save the Party from not fielding candidates for the 2023 elections.

“When Senator Anyanwu eventually succeeded at crowning himself the governorship candidate of the Party, he convened a meeting of all the LGA Youth Leaders at his residence in Owerri and confessed openly that he had lied to them about financial mismanagement in the Party by the State Working Committee.

“He also apologized to the State Youth Leader for the attacks and elimination attempts he had passed through because of the falsehoods which he (Samdadday) had propagated. He also recanted the lies and repeated the apologies during the only meeting he has had with us as members of the SWC since his emergence as governorship candidate. He said all the falsehoods peddled against us by him were as a result of his fight for survival.

“All of us in the State Working Committee are reputable people who have made their marks in their various areas of endeavour. How could Senator Anyanwu destroy our reputation, and also destroy the Party we have built, simply because of his fight for individual survival? The implication is that if by mistake he is allowed to govern Imo State, he will further destroy our dear State if only that would guarantee his individual survival!

“Last Saturday, armed thugs sponsored by Senator Anyanwu invaded the Party Secretariat and unleashed violence on us. They vandalized our building, smashed all the glasses, beat our security men to a pulp, broke into our offices, and looted everything they could find. This latest attack was the most brazen and audacious attempt to eliminate us. It is curious that the so-called function which Senator Anyanwu claims to have brought him and his thugs to the Party Secretariat was totally unknown to us as SWC members.

“When the State Chairman, Engr. Charles Ugwuh, made efforts to bring the police to investigate the attack, Senator Anyanwu stood against it. Is that not shocking? How can a man who says he wants to make Imo safe again be caught aiding and abetting acts of violence and insecurity even against his own Party members? There is clear danger! There is fire on the mountain! Run! Run!! Run!!! We must now run to stay alive!

“Despite the electoral vigour, creativity and resources which our Party had put into the 2023 general elections, we made a very poor showing simply because Senator Anyanwu directed his loyalists to mobilize and work against the Party and our candidates at all levels in the State. As a responsible Working Committee, we had overlooked all these provocations and proceeded to set up a reconciliation committee ahead of the governorship election. But our teeming members across the State who felt deeply hurt by the actions of Senator Anyanwu have appeared before the reconciliation committee and declared their position, that allowing Senator Anyanwu to hold the flag of the Party is a reward for impunity and remorseless anti-party activities.

“This is the reason that, in the aftermath of Senator Anyanwu’s emergence as governorship candidate, hundreds of senior members of the Party have dumped the PDP. Four serving Federal lawmakers also dumped the Party along with thousands of their supporters in a single day. Those who stayed back have completely lost morale, only looking up to us for direction. And the moment has come.

“How do we explain to generations yet unborn that it was under our watch that one man became the National Secretary and governorship candidate, and also single-handedly chose a deputy governorship candidate for himself? Collegiality, stakeholding and consultations have all taken flight from Imo PDP.

“When the Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha held sway as Leader of the Party, we saw a robust, vibrant, inclusive and functional political party system. Every success recorded by Imo PDP is owed to the ingenuity, resources and outstanding leadership of former Governor Ihedioha. Conversely, all the maladies that have lately befallen us are  squarely the making of Samdadday. And the unjust imposition of Samdadday on us as governorship candidate by the Ayu-led National Working Committee is the second most  cruel occurrence in history after Cain murdered Abel.

“To be very clear, Senator Anyanwu is not running for governorship in November. If he claims to be running, it is not to our knowledge as members of the State Working Committee. The Party does not know what his program looks like. That is if he has any. Governorship campaigns have started, yet the Party does not also know if there is anything like a campaign council.

“The rent for the Party Secretariat has since expired, and the landlord has kept harassing us. Party staff have gone without salaries since Senator Anyanwu emerged as the candidate of the Party. The Party cannot afford to fuel our power generating set and even purchase stationeries for our offices. Yet, someone is parading himself as our governorship candidate. This deceit cannot be allowed to continue, and we cannot lend ourselves as tools for the deception of Imo people. Never!

“In view of the forgoing and many other shocking discoveries which will soon be made public,  we, the undersigned members of the Imo State Working Committee of the PDP, have resolved to resign our various positions in the Party and dump the Party en masse.

“We have today opened the floodgate of resignations and defections, and in the next couple of weeks, there will be only Senator Anyanwu left in the Party.

“Thank you so much for the generosity of your attention.

“Signed:

“1. Sir Martins Ejiogu (State Deputy Chairman)

“2. Hon (Nze) Ray Emeaña (State Secretary)

“3. Comrade Greg G.O.C. Nwadike (State Youth Leader)

“4. Collins Opurozor (State Publicity Secretary)

“5. Hon. Chief Mrs. Maria Mbakwe (State Woman Leader)

“6. Barr. Josiah Eze (State Treasurer)

“7. Barr. Chibuisi Obido (State Vice Chairman, Orlu Zone)”

The SWC members are fiercely loyal to former Governor Emeka Ihedioha who, shockingly, withdrew from the Governorship race, and made way for Anyanwu as a sole candidate.

Speculations are that the decampees are likely to join the Labour Party in order to give the All Progressives Congress a good fight in Governorship election. For now, the PDP seems out of contention in that election. Analysts say it is going to be a battle between the APC and the LP.

Presidency: Jonathan Reveals How Kaunda Accurately Predicted His Political Future

0
Goodluck Jonathan

Former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has revealed, for the first time, how the late first President of Zambia Dr. Kenneth Kaunda and foremost Pan-Africanist gave accurate prophecy on his political progression by predicting 17 years ago that he would become President, at a time  nobody thought that such prospect was possible.

Dr. Jonathan stated this in Pretoria South Africa on Saturday in his keynote speech at the Second Kenneth Kaunda Public Lecture organised by Kenneth Kaunda Children of Africa Foundation. Dr. Jonathan also charged African leaders to aspire to live up to the ideals of Kaunda who he said was a leading voice in Africa’s quest for freedom and unity,  adding that the quality of leadership on the continent needed to be improved to ensure that the efforts of founding fathers like Kaunda towards Africa’s freedom, peace and development were not in vain.

He further urged African nations to  forge functional partnerships and work towards the successful implementation of the  African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement to enhance development and economic freedom for the continent.

Speaking of Kaunda’s prayers and prophecy on his political future as at the time he was Governor of Bayelsa State, the former President noted that it happened during the late elder statesmen’s  two-day visit to Bayelsa in 2006, following an invitation he extended to him to participate in his government’s work against the scourge of HIV/AIDS.

Dr. Jonathan said: “I must say it now that  Kaunda  in the early days of my political career, captured my political trajectory to the presidency in an accurate prophetic revelation that has continued to amaze me till this day.

“In 2006 when Kaunda had ended his visit to us in Yenagoa and was returning to Zambia, I remember seeing him off to the Port Harcourt Airport in neighbouring Rivers State. As he stood up and was about to board a vehicle that would convey him to the  aircraft, he turned back and said to me, “young man, you will be the president of this country one day.”

Dr. Jonathan said further that when this happened, he and his Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Ambassador Boladei Igali, who was with him “simply looked at each other in amazement, because the presidency was never in our dreams, at that time.”

The former President noted  however that he “later saw the prediction fulfilled in my life… So I can say that KK (Kenneth Kaunda) was the man who saw tomorrow as it related then to my political future and fortune, as I eventually became the President of my country, four years after that wish.”

Corroborating the former President’s assertion, the chief executive officer of Kenneth Kaunda Children of Africa Foundation, Sunday Musonda confirmed that he was with Kaunda during the visit, saying: “I was with Dr. Kaunda during that visit to Nigeria. One point I clearly remember was when KK blessed you (Jonathan) and said you would be President of Nigeria one day.”

Speaking on the continent’s political history, Jonathan encouraged Africans to reflect on the defining virtues that motivated leaders like Kaunda to make significant contributions to the continent’s development.

He stated: “As a young man then, my knowledge of African history was shaped by transformational leaders like Kwame Nkrumah, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Julius Nyerere, and,  of course, Kenneth Kaunda. The stories of their resilience and passion for nation-building formed the basis of contemporary African history. Their strides and sacrificial lifestyles toward their continent have produced many benefits for the continent.

“In their prime, these leaders envisioned a continent of hope where its people would be free from every guise of bondage. They committed their lives to actualising their dreams of independence for their countries. The likes of Kaunda could have opted to take sides with the oppressors and feed fat on their spoils, at the expense of the freedom of the people who were in bondage. But they chose the altruistic path of pursuing justice, hope, freedom, and good governance for their people.”

He further noted that the major issues confronting the continent today are insecurity, weak economies, disunity,  poverty, climate change, and poor governance.

Making a case for good governance on the continent, Dr. Jonathan said: “Leadership has become a major source of conflicts and wars in most of our countries. The leadership recruitment process and our inability to effectively manage political transitions have resulted in avoidable conflicts. Elections in some countries have become a source of instability, largely reflecting the kind of leaders we have in authority.

“My charge to my fellow brothers and sisters in the continent is for us to seek to redefine leadership and governance in the continent. We need a  leadership process that guarantees the fundamental freedoms and rights of the citizens and delivers a good life to them.

“We need to build and protect our political systems to serve the best interest of our people. We must learn how to manage our diversity and build an inclusive society.

Jonathan emphasized that AfCFTA has provided a clear path of attaining economic freedom for African nations, adding that strengthening a common African market would help Africans build a prosperous and united continent.

He however warned that in order to make AfCFTA a reality, sustainable and of maximum benefit to Africa, “we need to  address Africa’s  infrastructure  gaps especially transportation, air and rail networks, in order to ensure easy  movement of goods and services within the continent.  Also our leaders need to  work towards having a common medium of exchange to better optimise the gains of AfCFTA in the long term.”

Oil Theft: Anger In Military Over Indictment By Asari Dokubo

0
Gambo-Yahaya and Asari Dokubo

By Gideon Njoku

The Nigeria Military is angry over the labelling of its officers as oil thieves by a Niger Delta Leader, Mujahid Asari Dokubo.

Dokubo, a known agitator of the independence of the Niger Delta, ruffled feathers in the Military when he, on Friday, June 16, 2023, inside the Aso Rock Villa, insisted that the Military – specifically, the Army and the Navy – is responsible for the stealing of 99 per cent of crude oil in the Niger Delta.

The stealing of crude is an economic sabotage which has robbed Nigeria of trillions of Dollars over the years, and brought its economy to its knees.

Dokubo, a friend and supporter of President Bola Tinubu, spoke  to State House Correspondents when he emerged from a surprising almost two-hour closed-door meeting with the President.

He told the Correspondents that the Military, notedly, the Army and the Navy, are the ones stealing crude oil in the Niger Delta, and so, sabotaging the economy.

He promised to work with the Tinubu Government to put a stop to the crude theft as he would be an obstacle to the thieves he has identified.

But his indictment has not gone down well with the Military who not only feels sad but is very angry. It has also not gone down well with a number of individuals who were uncomfortable with the platform and venue he used to make the serious allegation.

The Olowu of Kuta, HRH Adekunle Oyelude Makama, Tegbosun III, in a statement  condemned Dokubo’s utterances and pointed out that they were capable of demoralising the Military. He said that a few bad eggs in the Military, same as in any other career, cannot be used to generalise and dismiss the whole of the Nigeria Military as oil thieves.

The Monarch, also, faulted the venue where  Dokubo made the serious allegation.

He noted:  “The outburst of Dokubo that the Military was responsible for oil theft after  his visit to Mr President is unbecoming. It’s a betrayal of trust. Why should he use the Presidential Press Gallery to make such statement that’s capable of demoralising our Military.

“If he has any information about some unscrupulous elements in the military involved in oil theft, he can pass it unto Mr President without the undue sensationalism. It’s uncalled for. With the supreme sacrifice our military had made and forces of insurgency and associated unrest across the country It’s  grappling with daily in order to keep Nigeria as one, that statement is tantamout to breaking their spirit. It’s not the best.”

But the Nigerian Navy, in a response, dripping with anger, has asked Dokubo to name its Officers involved in oil theft, and provide empirical evidence.

In a statement signed by its spokesman, Commodore Adedotun Ayo-Vaughan, the Navy dismissed Dokubo’s allegation as “spurious and unguarded.”

He submitted, short of calling the accuser an oil thief, that “oil thieves were expressing frustration because the Nigerian Navy, alongside the entire Military, has been relentlessly preventing their attempts to sabotage the economy through the ongoing ‘Operation DAKATAR DA BARAWO’

He noted that “the Navy maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of criminality, including the alleged theft mentioned by Asari Dokubo.”

On the Navy’s activities in the Niger Delta,  Ayo-Vaughan said:

“The Navy has an operation in the Niger-Delta that has been running for over one year plus to curb oil theft. Operation DAKATAR DA BARAWO has denied oil thieves more than N76billion worth of crude oil. The money that would have helped them to further increase their illegal artisanal refineries.

“So, the Navy is actively fighting oil theft. For anybody to make such spurious allegations, bring the names. He (Dokubo) is in the Niger Delta, he has boys in the Niger Delta.

“The company that was given a contract by the NNPC on pipeline surveillance, they are working with the Nigerian Navy and Operation Delta Safe in the Niger-Delta to curb oil theft.

“For somebody to just make such unguarded statement, bring the names. You know that there is an operation (Operation DAKATA BARAWO) going on in the Niger Delta being run by the Nigerian Navy since April last year. The Navy has been running it in synergy with the NNPC.

“NNPC holds regular meetings with the Chief of Naval Staff to review the operations. Just last week, the Chief Executive of NUPREC was here to have a meeting with CNS. Just two days ago, the management team for the other one on downstream regulatory authority were also here to have a meeting. For us, if you want to make such spurious allegations, bring the names. Simple!”

In its own reaction, Spokesperson for the Army, Brigadier -General Onyema Nwachukwu, dismissed the allegation as unfortunate, insisting, when he spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, that ” the Nigerian Army has been vigorously engaged in the fight against illegal oil bunkering, oil theft, illegal oil refining and other sundry crimes in the region with positive results.

“And this is evident in the increase in daily oil production per barrel from an abysmally dwindling output in the past.

“The Nigerian Army has zero tolerance for any compromise on the part of our troops and will not condone such acts of economic sabotage.”

However, not a few people say Dokubo badly wants part of the  crude oil pipeline protection contract given to a company where Government Ekpemupolo, popular as Tompolo, has very substantial interest, by the immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari Government. “He feels left out”, a source told this medium.

On the day of President Tinubu’s inauguration, Tompolo spent hundreds of millions of Naira I’m advertisements to congratulate the President. He bought up the front page of, almost, every National Newspaper. He was, obviously, protecting “his backyard.”

NBA Petitions IGP, ICPC,  Calls For Prosecution Of Senator Bulkachuwa

0
Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa

By Adesina Soyooye

The Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, has called for the investigation and prosecution of Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa.

In letters to the Inspector General of Police, IGP, and the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, the NBA President,  Mr Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, asked both Institutions to investigate the Senator and prosecute him.

Senator Bulkachuwa had shocked the Nation when during the Valedictory Session of the 9th Senate, on Saturday, June 9, he confessed to influencing the judgements of the Court of Appeal, to help his colleagues, through his wife, the Honourable Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, the immediate past President of the Court. He thanked her for allowing him to infringe on her independence in order to influence judgements in favour of his colleagues.

Since his confession, the Senator has come under fire by scandalised groups and individuals, including an embarrassed Nigeria Judicial Council, NJC, Senior Lawyers, Columnists, who not only asked for the interrogation and prosecution of the Senator, but for a probe into all the judgements delivered under the watch of his wife as the President of the Court of Appeal.

When the story broke with a viral video of the Senator where he made the confession, Maikyau had promised to petition against Bulkachuwa to the Police and the ICPC. He has, finally, done that, and asked for a probe and prosecution.

In a post, he said he had “written letters to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Chairman, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), requesting for the immediate investigation and prosecution of Senator Adamu Muhammad Bulkachuwa for the admissions/confessions he made in his valedictory remarks.”

He promised to keep the NBA “posted on further developments in the matter.”

He added: “I thank you all for the support as we continue with our fight for the enthronement of the rule of law and the defence of the integrity and independence of the Judiciary in Nigeria. We must always remember that:

“We lawyers are a dangerous breed; we challenge, we refuse to let anarchy and unfairness and inequity reign. We stand in the gap. We refuse to be silent. We fight, not with arms, but with words. We use the law as our weapon, and we wield it with skill and determination. We must teach the next generation to do the same… you play a central role in setting the parameters for the next generation of lawyers who will have the formidable task of safeguarding the rule of law in the new and challenging context in which we now live.” (Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland KC).”

Uzodinma To Editors: Support Tinubu’s Government

0
Olusegun Osoba and Hope Uzodimma

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has called on members of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) to support the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his quest to make Nigeria a better place for all.

The Governor made the call on Friday in his remarks while flagging off the Nigerian Guild of Editors National Biennial Convention 2023 in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

The Convention effectively brought to an end the tenure of the Mustapha Isa-led NGE executive to usher in a new one.

Governor Uzodimma reminded the Editors that they are partners in progress with the government, hence they must professionally play their constitutional role in the interest of the society.

The Governor commended Mr Isa-led executive and members of the Guild for their efforts so far in ensuring that the good stories about Nigeria are brought to public domain without compromising their professional ethics, reminding them, however, that the country is making steady progress in her democratic journey since the return of democracy in 1999 despite obvious hiccups.

He also lauded the choice of the theme for the Convention: Post 2023 election: Promoting Professionalism for Enhancement of Democracy and Good Governance.

He said: “Your theme for this conference, “POST – 2023 ELECTION: PROMOTING PROFESSIONALISM FOR ENHANCEMENT OF DEMOCRACY AND GOOD GOVERNANCE” is rather apt given the divergent opinions that trailed the conduct of the recently concluded general elections, and how the media reported the fall outs. As the saying goes, opinions are free, but facts remain sacred. Without preempting the guest lecturer in his interrogation of the topic, let me state that I am of the opinion that the traditional media discharged their duties creditably during the 2023 elections.

“I am impressed that you have chosen this path of self examination, which I consider germane in our collective bid to enhance good governance and strengthen our democracy. The last time you were here, I harped on the need for journalists to embrace developmental journalism in our quest to sustain and strengthen our democracy. While the media have the responsibility of holding public officers to account, they should, in addition, encourage the government through constructive criticism and well-intentioned suggestions on how things could be done differently to achieve better results. The ultimate goal should be the development and unity of our country and nothing else.

“It is a thing of interest that even among politicians could be found many media practitioners and even members of the clergy. It is no gainsaying that the political class, the clergy and the media are quite instrumental in determining what happens in most countries, including Nigeria. Therefore, it is in the interest of all of us because we are involved, to work for the sustainability of our democracy and our country. That means we must all work in synergy for our collective survival.”

He welcomed the editors to Imo State, particularly for their choice of Owerri for the Convention and thank the NGE President profoundly for his kind words and observations about his person and our dear State.

“I also welcome the Guest lecturer, Dr Chido Nwakanma of the Pan Atlantic University, Lagos. On behalf of the government and good people of Imo State, I wish to express our gratitude to members of this august body for finding Imo State suitable to host you twice in less  than one year – just some  months after your Annual Conference which held last year. It is indeed an honour which we do not take for granted,” the Governor said.

Governor Uzodimma’s remarks continued: “As experienced media practitioners, I believe you are familiar with the hypodermic theory which posits that “information is shot into the receivers’ mind and readily accepted”. This theory was largely influenced by the postulations of an American Writer, Reporter and Political Commentator, Walter Lippmann, who noted in the 1920s that citizens have limited personal experience with government and the world, therefore the media, through their stories, place ideas in their minds, and these ideas become part of their frame of reference and, consequently, affect their decisions.

“These postulations and theories appear very apt in the present day Nigeria. We have a huge, complex, and relatively naïve populace who “have limited personal experience with government and the world”. Therefore, whatever stories and ideas that are filed by the media becomes their reference point for decision – making. This position sits well with the theory that the media “shoots” information into the mind of citizens and they readily accept and act on such information.

“This is why media practitioners must be ever conscious of what flows from their pens, because what it “shoots” into the minds of the citizenry, can make or break both our democracy and our country. After all, it is not for fun that a school of thought holds it to be true, to date, that “the pen is mightier than the sword”. The president of the Guild said in his address that you have come to use your own election to teach politicians how to conduct peaceful elections. Let me first of all congratulate the President for serving his profession and his nation faithfully and passionately. I want to also commend him for electing to serve for only one tenure, although the constitution of the Guild allows him to seek a re-election to enable him to serve for a second term. This is indeed very noble of you.

“However, with all due respect, I do not think that conducting an election among a few hundreds of guild members can be compared to the general elections in our county. The complexities of size, population and logistics far outweigh your modest election which will be conducted in one room. And of course, the stakes are far higher than the stakes in your guild elections. I remember someone saying that conducting an election in Nigeria is like running an election in the entire West African coast. This may seem like an exaggeration, but it is true in a way, and that is why INEC appears to perform better in staggered elections.

“As for our politicians, we are products of the Nigerian society. And as I already noted, some of the members of the fourth estate, are also active and prominent members of the Nigerian political class. The truth is that we can hardly rise above our environment, and this applies to both journalists and editors. But that is not to say that we are not improving or that there is no need for improvement. As a matter of fact, our democracy is a work in progress. I believe that in the last 24 years, we have not only performed creditably, we have surpassed the expectations of many critics and pessimists. The transformative ingredients of our democracy are being refined daily. For example, we have achieved the peaceful transfer of power at the centre on at least four different occasions. We shall surely get there.

“I believe you should know that our democracy is still at its infant stage. Thus, we should not judge it harshly. Judging from the stage of our democracy, most of the hiccups we currently experience in our electoral process are to be expected. For the records, the developed countries of the West experienced similar “teething pains” before attaining the standard of democracy which they currently enjoy.

“Voter intimidation and a sundry other electoral misdeeds, including violence and even rigging, used to be common in these countries until the early 19th century. I am sure that all of us believed that one of the world’s oldest democracies, the United States of America, had perfected their electoral processes to the point that it was considered impregnable. But what did we see on January 6th, 2020? American democracy almost crumbled. Critical institutions such as the Congress were  effortlessly assailed. These sad events only remind us that no democracy is actually perfect. This does not mean that we should celebrate whatever shortfalls we experienced in the last general elections. Rather, it means we should be patient and work to encourage the populace to also be patient and realistic with their expectations. As a matter of fact, expecting a perfect electoral process at this stage is not a realistic enterprise.

“Yet, I dare say that I share your optimism of a better electoral process. As I said earlier, we shall surely get there only through incremental progress. More importantly, we must all work to preserve, protect, and celebrate whatever progress we have already recorded, so we do not fall back. This is where your professionalism comes handy in post – election management.

“Now, the sacred fact is that elections have been held and winners have emerged in accordance with our electoral laws. I expect the professional media to stand by this truth and to encourage aggrieved losers to explore all available legal opportunities for redress.

As you know, I sought redress from the courts when I felt I was robbed of victory, and, to the glory of God, my mandate was restored by the Supreme Court.

“It is important to state that when media practitioners wittingly or unwittingly  discredit the electoral process and the outcome of elections, or ridicule the institutions empowered by law to interrogate the process and come up with binding judicial pronouncements, then such practitioners have lost the salt of professionalism, and have become part of the problem of our democracy. I believe that professionalism further demands that you should be seen to stand by the lawful winners of  elections, help them with agenda setting and, where possible, make inputs that will ensure the hitch-free, take-off of the new administration. When you discharge this sacred obligation, you are better placed to offer needful criticism when the time comes. For me, this background of first acknowledging the fact and helping it thrive is part of what makes criticisms constructive.”

Governor Uzodimma also used the opportunity to rap the editors about his government and what he has been able to achieve in the past three and half years despite all odds.

Hear him: “I also share in your frustrations regarding the economy as it affects your businesses. I am not immune from that challenge for I am also a publisher. When I came into office, the state-owned newspaper,The Statesman, was on its way to extinction. But today, it is being published daily in spite of the economic challenges of the moment. It is the same story with the Imo Broadcasting Corporation. In addition to sustaining the operations of the media houses, media workers, like other workers in the state, are not being owed any salaries by the government.

“Apart from the prompt payment of salaries and pensions, my administration has religiously pursued our prosperity agenda encapsulated in Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Recovery. After your annual conference last year, our dear former President, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, was here to commission our flag ship dual carriageways that connect the State capital to the major cities of Orlu and Okigwe. We have also completed the MCC -Uratta -Toronto road while the Owerri – Mbaise – Obowo – Umuahia road and Orlu – Mgbee – Akokwa – Uga road are nearing completion. These are among the more than 100 standard roads built by this administration within a space of 40 months. This is in addition to equally significant progress recorded in various other sectors like education, health, industry, youths empowerment and social services, which my administration identified as priorities.

“In this respect,  I will not fail to use an auspicious occasion such as this to inform you that Imo State is the first and only State to have fully embraced the age of  digital economy by establishing the Ministry of Digital Economy and E-Government. Through this ministry, we have commenced a Skill up Imo project that targets to train 100,000 Imo youths in different digital skills every year. The first set of 5000 youths trained in this programme graduated last month, and are now working in different High tech companies or have set up their own shops, through our assistance. The next batch of 15000 are expected to graduate in a few weeks’ time.

“It would gladden my heart if you would all find the time to go around and see things for yourselves.

“I believe it is equally important that I highlight some of the projects that we have attracted from the federal government. These include the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, which has been upgraded to Federal University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Owerri, and the Naval Base at Oguta. Recently, the former Vice – President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, was in Imo State to flag off the dredging of Oguta Lake to Orashi River to Degema and the Atlantic Ocean. This is one project dear to my heart because it is at the heart of the economic development of the entire South East region of the country. When the project is completed, with the expected River Port, the economy of Imo State and that of the entire South East will start breathing again. I am once again grateful to the federal government for the approval granted to us to execute this historic project.

“You would also have noticed that the issue of insecurity in the State has not featured in this address as it did the last time you visited. Yes, this is because through the federal government and the security agencies, the monster has been tamed and subdued. What we are now experiencing are pockets of crime reminiscent of the last kicks of a dying horse. I told you last time that the perpetrators of the heinous crimes would not prevail. Their sole aim was to distract me from the act of governance so they could whittle down my achievements. But they failed woefully because you can not use your bare hands to cover the moon. And to the glory of God, in spite of all the distractions,  Imo State is looking up in every sector.

“Finally, let me assure you that the APC – led government both at the State and federal levels will never do anything to impede the work of journalists. I believe I have a very cordial relationship with both the labour unions and the Nigeria Union of Journalists. I believe we have enough laws in our statutes to check the excesses of some misguided media practitioners. The setting up of the National Media Complaints Commission is welcomed by me. Those who are aggrieved by the actions of the media can always approach the Commission to seek redress. I charge the Commission to find a way of bringing the social media to account also. Nobody denies the fact that we need the media to strengthen our democracy. Both the government and the practitioners must therefore work together to ensure the protection, survival and development of this democracy.

“Once again, I welcome you all to Imo State and assure you of your safety and the legendary hospitality of my people. I thank you for your attention and wish you a successful biennial Convention.”

Former Governor of Ogun State, Chief Segun Osoba, two Members of House of Representatives from Imo State Canice Nkwachukwu and Akarachi Amadi, former Managing Director/ Editor-in-Chief of Sun Publishing Limited, Dr. Tony Onyima (Chairman of the occasion),  foremost businessman, Chief Tony Chukwu, among other dignitaries graced the occasion.

The Olowu of Kuta, HRH Adekunle Oyelude Makama, Tegbosun III, has slammed former Niger Delta Militant and agitator, Mujaheed Asari Dokubo for alleging that the Military – Army and Navy – are responsible for oil theft in Nigeria.

Dokubo had visited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Friday, where they had a closed door meeting. But while speaking to the Media after his meeting with the President, he alleged that the Military should be held responsible for oil theft in Nigeria.

Responding, the  Monarch said that Dokubo should stop demoralizing the Military with his unguarded utterances.

In a statement issued by his Media Office, the Monarch  said any attempt to ridicule Nigerian Military because of few bad elements like any other institutions will be counter productive.

The Monarch said it takes a lot of efforts to build a country’s military to the standard Nigeria has, adding that such sweeping statement that the military is responsible for the oil theft in Niger Delta was not the best.

Frowning at such generalisation, the Olowu said in as much as the country appreciates the support of Dokubo in the last few months to President  Tinubu, his outburst about the military after the visit is unbecoming.

Olowu said: “The outburst of Dokubo that the Military was responsible for the oil theft after his visit to Mr President is unbecoming. It’s a betrayal of trust. Why should he use the Presidential press galery to make such statement that’s capable of demoralising our military?”

“If he has any information about some unscrupulous elements in the military involved in oil theft, he can pass it unto Mr President without that undue sensationalism. It’s uncalled for. With the supreme sacrifice our military had made and forces of insurgency and associated unrest across the country it’s grappling with daily in order to keep Nigeria as one, that statement is tantamout to breaking their spirit; it’s not the best”, the Monarch counselled.
