Abbas suddenly slumped while taking questions from the Senators.

His collapse sent panic within the hallowed Chambers with the President of the Senate, Mr. Godswill Akpabio shouting “give him water and sugar”.

Senator Akpabio thereafter ordered that all cameras be shut down while they made frantic efforts to resuscitate the ailing man.

He, thereafter, ordered all journalists to vacate the premises.

What led to his collapse remains uncertain.

Pregnant Woman Death: We Are Not To Blame, LASTMA Says

0

The Lagos state Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, has denied complicity in the death of a pregnant woman on Tuesday when some officials of the agency were trying to arrest an alleged traffic offender around Ago Palace, Way, Okota.

The woman was crushed to death when a tricycle conveying her and her three children was hit by the driver of a Sienna SUV who was trying to escape arrest.

Apart from her, the driver of the tricycle was also killed while her three children also sustained first-degree injuries, and are now being treated in an undisclosed hospital.

The incident has been blamed on LASTMA and policemen who allegedly tried to seize the steering from the driver, leading to the fatal accident.

Following the accident, the community was immediately thrown into chaos as youths in the area attacked LASTMA officials, looted, and vandalized its yard.

The magazine learned that officials of Isolo Local Council Development Authority, LCDA, have pleaded for calm as anger boiled in the area.

Reacting to the incident, Bolaji Oreagba, General Manager of LASTMA, said its men are not to be blamed but the driver, who after driving against the traffic (one way) tried to escape from enforcement officials.

In a statement signed by Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Taofiq Adebayo, the agency boss commiserated with the families of the deceased, he accused the Sienna driver of being reckless, adding that he will soon face prosecution for breaking the law.

Explaining what transpired, Oreagba said the offender was being escorted by a policeman to the LASTMA office where he was expected to be booked for the offense committed when he tried to escape.

“On their way, and in an attempt by driver to escape, he diverted into Bayo Oyewale Street by Ago Round-About and rammed into a fully loaded tricycle,” he said.

He explained further: “While the tricycle operator died instantly, the pregnant woman later died at the Hospital while the two injured School Children were currently, under Intensive Care Unit” receiving medical attention

“The escort policeman in the contravened vehicle equally sustained various degrees of injury as a result of the fatal auto crash.

“The incident sparked off protest as a mob descended on the escort Police Officer but the timely intervention of a team of Policemen from Ago/ Okota/Ilasa Police Stations saved the Policeman from being lynched.

“Subsequently, LASTMA Yard was invaded and valuable items were vandalised including vehicles within the premises.

“It is noteworthy to mention that in an attempt to escape, the driver of the Sienna car lost control as a result of reckless driving which eventually resulted into the fatal accident.

“The management of the agency commiserate with the families of the deceased, and assured that thorough investigation will be carried out to determine the immediate and remote cause of the accident and that justice will be served appropriately,” Kehinde had reported to Oreagba.”

Meanwhile, not a few residents in the state have called on Governor Babajide Sanwoolu, to call the officials of the agency to order. The behaviour of some unscrupulous LASTMA officials has led to the untimely death of some innocent souls, according to them.

CSU: Foreign Affairs Minister Dismisses as Frivolous, Distraction, Allegations Against Tinubu

By Adesina Soyooye

Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister for Foreign Affairs,  has dismissed the  controversy surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s academic records at the Chicago State University CSU as frivolous. He said it is meant to distract the President, but insisted that neither the President nor the Government is bordered.

Former Vice President and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the February 25, 2023 General Election, Atiku Abubakar, had asked the US District Court,  Northern Illinois to compel the CSU to release Tinubu’s academic records to him.

In the document, Atiku  argued that the document would help his suit at the Supreme Court of Nigeria. He is  challenging Tinubu’s declaration as President in the Presidential election.

The US Court ordered CSU to release the President’s academic records to Atiku.

In compliance, CSU released the records to Atiku’s legal team a cache of documents connected to Tinubu’s education at the CSU as well as copies of certificates with names issued to other persons about the same time the Tinubu finished in 1979 at the school.

But reports showed that the certificate obtained by the President from the CSU was different from the one submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, before the election.

But in reaction during an interview on Channels Television, Wednesday, the Foreign Affairs Minister, said the Federal Government is not bordered.

He dismissed the allegations as just “frivolous issues” aimed at distracting  Tinubu’s administration.

He said: “There is a tendency to always try to distract people on such frivolous issues as opposed to facing the major issues of development. We don’t have time to waste on that.

“Nobody is wasting time about certificate qualification for somebody who has been a Governor of a State, served two terms, and has been on the national stage as a politician.

“You remember that (former) President Buhari had to go through the same thing, where people were actually questioning whether he went to secondary school or not. Someone who had classmates and was the captain? He was a head boy.”

All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo state has advised the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to purge itself of allegations of  financial misappropriation and corruption allegations against its leadership.

APC pointed out that these allegations raise questions about the PDP’s ability to manage public funds if allowed to govern the state.

The ruling party, in a statement on Wednesday noted that “It is disheartening to learn that the PDP has failed to pay its staff for the period spanning 22 months, along with claims of mismanagement, which have raised serious concerns among the public.

“This failure to meet their financial obligations not only reflects poorly on the PDP, but on the party’s ability to effectively manage its affairs and fulfill its responsibilities towards its members.”

The state, signed by Steve Otaloro, director, media and publicity of APC added that  “The APC acknowledges that the PDP is a major opposition political party in Nigeria with a significant presence in Ondo State.

“However, it is imperative for a party aspiring to lead and govern to demonstrate transparency, accountability, and responsibility.

“The failure of the PDP to pay its staff has not only created financial hardship for these individuals but continues to damage the party’s fragile reputation and credibility in the state.

“This lack of financial stability raises questions about the party’s ability to manage public funds if allowed to govern the state.

“Furthermore, the accusations against the PDP Chairman, Hon. Fatai Adams, and his Executive Committee are grave.

“The alleged diversion of funds intended for staff salaries, along with claims of maltreatment and mismanagement, raises serious concerns about the party’s ability to manage its affairs in Ondo State.

“Before seeking the trust and support of the Ondo State electorate, the PDP must demonstrate its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the welfare of its employees. The party must take immediate steps to address this serious issue of misappropriation against its leadership.

“They must conduct a thorough investigation into this allegation of mismanagement and take appropriate action to restore confidence among the general public.

“The party needs to uphold the highest standards of integrity and financial accountability. Only by doing so can the PDP rebuild trust and credibility among the electorate, our party, and the general public as a credible opposition party in the state.

“The upcoming local government and governorship elections in Ondo State are crucial in determining the future of the people of the state. The party needs to regain the trust and confidence of the electorate by rectifying the situation and demonstrating a commitment to good leadership.

“The people of Ondo State deserve a party and people that can effectively manage its affairs and work towards the development and progress of the state.

“The daunting allegations of mismanagement within the party have further eroded its confidence among the general public.

“They must take immediate steps to address these allegations and ensure that those responsible are accountable for their actions before the electorate in the state can trust them as a venerable political party deserving of their votes.”

UNICAL Panel Se€ual Harassment Report Indicts Dean, Law Faculty (Full Report)

0
Prof Cyril Ndifon and UNICAL Female Law Students

By Gideon Njoku

Unless he gets a reprieve from the Court which intervention he has already sought,  Professor Cyril Ndifon, the suspended Dean Faculty of Law, University of Calabar, is in for big trouble and more humiliation. He may, also, lose his high profile job, and worse, could be disciplined by the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA.

The embattled Professor has been found guilty by the Probe Panel set up by the University of Calabar to investigate allegations of se€ual harassment of female Law students, misconduct and abuse of office.

Professor Ndifon’s troubles started when female Law students of the University backed by their male counterparts protested the alleged se€ual harassment on them by their Dean. They requested for the removal from office of the Dean and a review of the names he had been forwarding to the Law School.

Professor Ndifon denied all allegations and said it was the Vice Chancellor, Professor Florence Obi, who instigated them against him because he did not support her during her race to the office of the Vice Chancellor.

A report by CITY LAWYER said that the Panel “established the serial violations of some of the extant rules and regulations.” by the Professor.

The report is titled: “REPORT OF THE PANEL SET UP TO INVESTIGATE ALLEDGED MISCONDUCT, SEXUAL HARASSMENT AND ABUSE OF OFFICE LEVELLED AGAINST PROFESSOR CYRIL OSIM NDIFON, SUSPENDED DEAN OF FACULTY OF LAW, UNIVERSITY OF CALABAR.”

It stated that the:

“The Panel was regaled with accounts of sexual harassment by 10 current and former students of the university, even as one of the witnesses, a 200-level student, told the panel that the suspended Dean told her that “she would be answerable to every sexual call put across to her….”

CITY LAWYER said it: “participated in some of the panel’s hearings via the Zoom platform.”

Said the report, quoting one victim:  “Prof. Ndifon called her to come to the office the next day and when she came, he locked the office and brought out his penis and told her that if she sucked his penis, he would accept her into the Faculty. After much pressure from the suspended Dean and feeling frustrated, this survivor gave in and sucked his penis and almost got choked as Prof. Ndifon held her head while forcing his penis into her mouth.”

The panel report, according to CITY LAWYER, also, contains details of “24 mobilized students for law school Admission whose results were not cleared,” which showed that the Nigerian Law School list from the university “may have been corrupted by the suspended Dean.

One example: “This candidate’s name is not in the screened list of the final year law students. But was mobilized for Law school.”

In another case, said the Panel:  “Further (name withheld) did not take Jurisprudence a core course but is mobilized for law school.”

On “Major Misconduct,” the Panel “established that the suspended Dean, Prof. Cyril Osim Ndifon was using his official position to both intimidate and bargain for sexual favour from female students in the Faculty of Law.”

On “Gross Misconduct,” the Panel “established that the suspended Dean had been involved in students’ exploitation. Elaborately, he had been perpetrating cruelty against students by forestalling the graduation of especially some female students at the appropriate time by withholding and refusing to release their results and threatening some that they would never graduate from the Faculty or go to the law School.”

The panel also found “that the suspended Dean was compelling the law students to pay for a Faculty Journal that was non- existent for three consecutive academic sessions.”

It, therefore, recommended

“That the suspended Dean of Law should face the statutory Disciplinary Committee of the University of Calabar for appropriate sanctions applicable to acts of both Major and Gross – misconduct. The panel makes this recommendation in view of Prof. Ndifon’s antecedents in the Faculty of Law, which from the testimonies given by both staff and students are in clear violations of the extant rules and regulations governing the conditions of service of staff of the University of Calabar. He has used his position as a lecturer and his position as Dean of the Faculty of Law for non- edifying purposes, frustrating, traumatizing and jeopardizing the future of some of the students, as well as the lecturers.”

It further recommended that “The suspended Dean should be made to refund over three million naira (N3m) realized from the payments made by the law students for the Law Journal which he neither published nor gave to the students.

“That the acting Dean should without delay arrange internal defense for Barrister Anne Eruegi Agi to defend her Ph.D and encourage same to put in for promotion in the next promotion exercise.

“That the University should make a rule to stop lecturers from asking students to come and see them at odd (after official) hours and if need be, encourage the culture of not locking their offices when consulting with students. This is consistent with global best practice.

“The university should bend backwards so as to come to the aid of some law students who have been roaming around because of the lapses in the Faculty of Law over the years. There should be a call for such to come for supplementary examinations or mop up. This will go a long way to help the University gain the confidence among stakeholders and prove to the wider society that the University cares and is not indifferent.

“Further steps should be taken to clean up the mess in the Faculty of Law. The seeds of discord planted over the years need to be uprooted. The culture of borderization seems to be entrenched both among staff and students. Such is unhealthy for academic standards, discipline and merit…. It is indeed possible with God on the side of the University for old things to pass away and for everything to become new in the Faculty of Law, University of Calabar, Calabar.”

The report also said that Ndifon “was properly invited thrice by the Panel to come and defend himself but he failed to appear. The invitations were done through written memos, text and WhatsApp messages, as well as radio announcements. The panel had to rely on his responses to the 10 point query issued to him by the University as guidance.”

One of the terms of reference for the panel was:

“To thoroughly investigate cases of sexual harassment and molestation levelled against the suspended Dean of Law by female students and others who may have felt victimized.” Regarding this term of reference, the investigation panel received sworn statements from students and alumni of the Faculty of Law, University of Calabar, three written and signed statements from other survivors of same. Five alumni gave evidence via zoom while four current students appeared in person and gave evidence as follows ….”

It is not known yet the action the University would take against the Professor, especially, as the he has gone to Court to stop the University from even proceeding with the probe.

Abuja Court Injunction: Ondo Assembly Drags Judge To NJC, Describes Ruling As Malevolent

0
Justice Emeka Nwite

By Ayodele Oni

Ondo State House of Assembly has dragged a Judge of the Federal High Court Abuja, Justice Emeka Nwite, to the National judicial Council, (NJC) over what it described as Spurious judgement.

The Judge had, last week, granted an injunction restraining the assembly and other parties from going ahead with the impeachment process of the Ondo state deputy governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

The Assembly had vowed not to obey the judgement.

It described an ex-parte granted by a federal High court in Abuja on the 26th September, 2023, restraining the Assembly from impeaching the Ondo State Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, as “unconstitutional and clearly malevolent”

In a petition addressed to the Chairman, NJC and signed by the Speaker of the House,  Olamide Oladiji, the Assembly accused Justice Emeka Nwite who granted the order, for allegedly compromising his office and violating the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In the petition sighted by newsmen in Akure, the state capital, the parliamentarians alleged that Justice Nwite was “heavily and/or compromised his office to grant an unconstitutional ex parte in favour” of the embattled Deputy Governor.

The petition partly read, “As the Speaker of the 10th Ondo State House of Assembly, and on behalf of the entire members of the House of Assembly (hereinafter referred to as “ODHA”), I write your lordship to formally lodge a complaint against Hon. Justice Emeka Nwite of the Abuja Judicial Division of the Federal High Court, for compromising his office and violating the extant provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

“He ignores judicial decisions of the appellate courts and extant Practice Directions and/or relevant Circulars of the Federal High Court, to grant an unconstitutional, clearly malevolent, and ostensibly procured ex parte order on 26th September, 2023 in Suit FHC/ABJ/CS/1294/2023 restraining ODHA as an arm of government from exercising its constitutional powers.

“On September 2023, Eleven (11) members of the Ondo State Assembly presented a notice of allegation(s) of gross misconduct (impeachment notice) against the Deputy-Governor of Ondo State, His Excellency, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa to me as the Speaker, in line with Section 188(2) (a) & (b) of the Constitution.

“I hereby attach a copy of the notice as Annexure ODHA.As your lordship would observe, annexure ODHA contains 14 allegations, many of which relate to alleged financial improprieties running into hundreds of millions of naira.

“My Lord, as a ranking member of ODHA and based on the benefit of a detailed legal advice, which the House has sought on the subject matter, I know as a fact that impeachment is a purely legislative affair.

“Section 188 (10) of the Constitution clearly provides that: ‘No proceedings or determination of the House of Assembly or an Impeachment Panel or any matter relating to such proceedings or determination shall be entertained or questioned in any court.’

“However, in spite of the above provisions of the Constitution, the Deputy-Governor approached Justice Emeka Nwite with an ex parte application on 21st September, 2023, just a day after I received Annexure ODHA1 (the notice of allegations of gross misconduct) against him at the plenary of the House, to procure an order to stop the legislative process of his impeachment.

“My lord, as a Judge of the Federal High Court, Hon. Justice Emeka Nwite knows or ought to know that there are extant Circulars and Practice Directions prohibiting Federal High Court Judges from granting ex parte injunctions in political cases and/or taking cases that did not originate from their immediate Judicial Divisions.

“Hon Justice Emeka Nwite should be investigated for abuse of ex parte injunction and/or his office to gratify the Ondo State Deputy-Governor, and if found liable, the National Judicial Council should mete out the appropriate sanction against him as required by the dictates of judicial fidelity and the protection of the rule of law and our nascent democracy.”

There is hope for  about three hundred thousand students that sat for the last May/June secondary school certificate examinations conducted by the West African Examinations Council, (WAEC) whose results were withheld.

The examinations body disclosed  on Tuesday via its official X handle that a meeting to determine the fate of the affected students has been fixed.

Some of the students were caught cheating during the final examinations, while some affected centres had one time or the other been sanctioned for similar offence.

The information reads “To deliberate on cases of malpractice and irregularities from the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for school candidates, the West African Examinations Council will meet with the Nigeria Examinations Committee.

“The 76th Meeting of the Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC) to consider and decide on the malpractice/irregularity cases arising from the conduct of WASSCE for School Candidates, 2023 begins today.”

In August, the examination body initially released the 2023 WASSCE results, but the outcomes of 262,803 candidates were put on hold, due to instances of examination malpractice.

However, the body has assured candidates that information about their results will be communicated after the NEC meeting concludes its deliberations.

WAEC had, on Monday, appointed Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut as the Head of the Nigeria National Office.
