“Why Tinubu And I Parted Ways” – Atiku, Says: “I Don’t Have To Be President”

0

By Gideon Njoku

Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the February 25th General Elections, Atiku Abubakar, has revealed how he and President Bola Tinubu parted ways.

Both men were great friends and great political allies, but have since become bitter political  enemies.

In response to a question, after he addressed a Press Conference in Abuja on Thursday as to why he betrayed President Tinubu, and stabbed him at the back, Atiku said the contrary is the case. He explained that contrary to a statement credited to a Tinubu aide on Wednesday to the effect that he, Atiku, owes a debt to Tinubu, it is Tinubu who owes him, Atiku, that debt. He explained he had always watched Tinubu’s back, and was instrumental to Tinubu’s second term in office as a Governor. Without him, Atiku said, in 2003, President Olusegun Obasanjo could have taken Lagos State from Tinubu as he did other South-west States. He said he was the one who stood between Obasanjo, whose Vice President he was at the time, and Tinubu, and told Obasanjo to leave Lagos alone for Tinubu. “So, who owes whom?”, Atiku asked. “I never betrayed Tinubu”, he added.

He revealed that he and Tinubu parted ways in 2007 over a Muslim-Muslim ticket. As the Presidential Candidate of the AC, Atiku said, Tinubu wanted to be his running mate. But he said he rejected that because he didn’t think such a ticket would be fair to Nigerians, especially, in a country like ours.

Atiku: “Those of you who are old enough will also remember that in 2003, the PDP took over all the South Western States, with the exception of Lagos.

“I stood between Obasanjo and himself – Tinubu – and I said ‘no, you – Obasanjo- can’t take over Lagos. Leave it, and he, Obasanjo, left it’. So, who is indebted to whom? Is it me or Bola Ahmed Tinubu? I vehemently deny that I stabbed Tinubu in the back. There are other things I will not want to go into.”

“I beg to disagree on the allegation of betrayal of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Yes, it is true that in 2007, we came together to form an alliance in Lagos, and at the convention, I contested and got the ticket. After I got the ticket, he sent me about five or six seniors, some of them are here. I can even name them, but I don’t want to embarrass them.

“They met me and said to me that Bola wanted to be my running mate. I said to them, ‘Gentlemen, you are all old enough, and apparently, and virtually, all of you are Christians with the exception of one person. What will be your reaction to having a Muslim-Muslim ticket?’

“All of them said we totally object to it, and I said: ‘Why didn’t you tell him when he was giving you the message that, look, Mr Tinubu, the message you are sending us, we don’t seem to agree with you on it. Why are you coming then to me?’

“And that was the end of our political relationship. We broke away. So, what is the ground for him to say that I betrayed him?

“Till today, I won’t do a Muslim-Muslim ticket. I don’t have to be President. We are a multi-ethnic and multi-religious people, and our Government must reflect  our diversity, and our composition must reflect the same.”

Presidential Election: Atiku Says Tinubu Sent Govs To Beg Him

0
Bola Tinubu And Atiku Abubakar

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has revealed how President Bola Ahmed Tinubu allegedly sent some state governors to beg him not to challenge the latter’s victory in this year’s presidential election.

Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP candidate in the February 25 presidential election came third in the keenly contested election in which Tinubu was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Instructively, the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, PEPT, had recently affirmed Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate the winner of the election.

The PDP candidate has challenged the verdict in the Supreme Court in his quest to overturn Tinubu’s victory.

Speaking during a world press conference on Thursday, Abubakar said he would fight to the end to prove his case in court that Tinubu is not qualified to contest the election, saying that some governors were sent to him immediately after the election not to challenge Tinubu victory.

He said: “Immediately after the elections, I was told there was a delegation of governors who claimed they were sent by the president, and I did not even allow them to get into my house – I didn’t.

“I will only drop the fight when the court rules. If the court rules that I am right, fine. If the court rules that he is right, fine. So that’s the end of the fight, because, at the moment, we are the Supreme Court, and there is no other higher court than the Supreme Court.”

The former vice president recently succeeded in his month-long battle to have the Chicago State University, CSU, release the academic records of Tinubu to him.

Abubakar’s lawyers, according to those close to him, are planning to use new evidence to prove that Tinubu is not eligible to contest the election based on the alleged forged certificates he submitted to the electoral umpire.

Update: Professor Ndifon Arrested By DSS, Not Abducted By Gunmen

Embattled and suspended Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Calabar, Professor Cyril Ndifon, has been arrested by the Department of State Services, DSS. This is contrary to the report earlier that the embattled Professor  was abducted by gunmen.

The Professor’s son, David, had said that his father was abducted by gunmen who stormed their residence at Akpabuyo Local Government Area, Cross River State, between 11.00pm Wednesday and early Thursday morning. He said the gunmen fired gunshots on arrival, and  harassed the family by pointing guns at members, before abducting his father. David said they were making  attempts to establish contact with his father’s abductors.

But contrary to the abduction story, the DSS in a statement by its Spokesperson, Dr. Peter Afunanya, said its operatives arrested Professor Afunanya   over his refusal to honour invitations extended to him by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, a number of times.

The ICPC had invited Ndifon in connection with the allegations of se€ual harassment and other sundry issues made against him by female Law students of the University.

However, the ICPC complained to the DSS and got the Service to collaborate with it in getting Ndifon arrested to honour the invitation.

Said Afunanya: “… the Service, following the Commission’s request, and in the spirit of interagency cooperation, supported it for a successful operation.

“This is to guide public understanding of the latest developments on the matter.”

Professor Ndifon has, already, been found guilty by  a Panel set up by the University to investigate the allegations made against him by the students.

Imo: Teachers  Endorse Uzodimma for Re-election; Governor to Domesticate FG’s Policy On 65yrs Retirement For Teachers

0
Hope Uzodimma

Teachers in Imo State have adopted and endorsed Governor Hope Uzodimma for re-election for a second term in office, assuring that they will vote massively for him in the coming November 11 governorship election.

They gave the assurance on Thursday at the Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu Square Owerri where they gathered in their numbers to mark this year’s World Teacher’s Day.

It was also a day Governor Uzodimma told the teachers that he will domestic the federal government’s policy on the 65 years of age or 40 years in service for retirement of teachers and promised to work out the modalities with the leadership of the teachers in Imo on the legal framework to back up the policy.

Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Imo State Chapter, Rev Dr Philip Nwansi in his address on behalf of the teachers told Governor Uzodimma that never in the history of the State have the teachers been well treated than in his administration.

Nwansi recalled that since Governor Uzodimma assumed office in January 2020, teachers have received their salaries promptly, got promotions, received 13 month salary, enjoyed free transportation, received free medical treatment, payment of N40,000 minimum wage, prompt payment of retirees, renovation of classroom blocks, enjoyment of in-house training, among other things the government has extended to them.

He said after assessing all that the Governor has done for them and more, the teachers unanimously resolved to queue behind him on November 11 to ensure that he gets reelected to return to office to continue to render beneficial services to the teachers.

Also, he said they resolved to adopt Governor Uzodimma as their sole candidate in the election and to assure him of their unflinching and unalloyed support at all times.”

Nwansi added that the teachers also resolved to bestow two awards on the Governor –  the “Golden Pen Award” which he said Governor Uzodimma is the first to be so honoured with such award in the history of the Union in Nigeria and the “Award of Synergy and Continuity.”

In his remarks, Governor Uzodimma thanked the teachers for being genuine partners in his efforts to serve Imo better.

The Governor who recalled the role teachers play in our families in particular and society at large, said that there is nothing done for the teachers that could quantify the contribution they make to improve on the society.

Governor Uzodimma therefore promised to ensure that the the federal government’s policy on their retirement age and the number of years of service is domesticated to become a law.

Besides, the governor promised to improve on their current wages and salaries such that teaching will be attractive and by choice.

Governor Uzodimma however reminded the teachers to be prepared to teach at their respective communities and deemphasize the idea of struggling to work at Owerri Municipal.

The governor thanked the teachers for the honour they bestowed on him and wished them memorable Teacher’s Day.

Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion and Commissioner for Education, Prof Johncliff Nwadike congratulated the teachers on their day and reeled out all the good qualities that mark them out from other  professionals.

The event was attended by the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Prof Placid Njoku, the Secretary to Government of Imo State, Chief Cosmos Iwu, the Chief of Staff, Barr Nnamdi Anyaehie the APC deputy governorship candidate Lady Chinyere Ekomaru and her husband, Chukwuma and other government appointees.

The highpoint of the event was a march past by the teachers from all the 27 local government areas of Imo State, including their principals.

Why I Pursued Tinubu To Chicago State University –  Atiku Abubakar

0

“We undertook this journey at great cost and for important reasons. The ground rules for legitimate governance in our country need to be upheld, and the reputation of our country is at stake. That affects everyone, Nigerians everywhere.”

Gentlemen of the Press, Fellow Citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I consider it important to address and report to you today on issues that define the future of elective government and legitimate leadership in our country.

Political leadership and active citizenship matter because they are ways through which we all work together to build a country that works for all who live in it.

Our country is bigger than any of us, and its standing in the world affects the fate of all who come from or live in it. As leaders, it is our duty to advance the well-being of all our people and of the country.

For this purpose, my generation worked hard to return the soldiers to the barracks and to defend the right of the people to elect and establish for ourselves a legitimate government. Our elections are established and governed by law and founded on the constitution from which leadership and government in Nigeria alone derive their legitimacy.

The people look up to us as leaders to respect these rules and, where necessary, to defend them. This is what brings us here.

Today, we are called upon again as a people to uphold and defend the ground rules of elective government in our country. The constitution prescribes the requirements for those who seek the highest elective office in the land.

It should not take months or, indeed, decades, for the institutions concerned to be able to do their work in establishing the credibility of any certificates presented by candidates for public office.

We undertook this journey at great cost and for important reasons. The ground rules for legitimate governance in our country need to be upheld, and the reputation of our country is at stake. That affects everyone, Nigerians everywhere.

I am a democrat by conviction and a citizen of a country that I love. The issues at stake in this case require us once more to re-dedicate ourselves to both the country and our constitution.

Now, we entrust these facts to us all as citizens and as leaders of the institutions charged with interpreting our constitution. I should thank the lawyers both in Nigeria and in the United States, who have assisted us in bringing clarity and definitive answers to these issues that appear to have defied our institutions for nearly a quarter of a century. I also want to extend my gratitude to Nigerian citizens and friends of Nigeria both within and beyond the shores of our country for their patience as we have sought to find the facts and establish the truth.

I wish to pay tribute to the late human rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, who inspired us on this path of discovery. Now, he can truly rest in peace in the assurance that what he started about 23 years ago has come to fruition. Gani’s vindication today gives credence to the saying that no matter how fast a lie runs, the truth will someday overtake it.

Former American President Thomas Jefferson once said, “If I had to choose between government without newspapers, and newspapers without government, I wouldn’t hesitate to choose the latter”. From exposing the Watergate scandal and unravelling the dubious certificates of politicians, journalists have maintained eternal vigilance by bridging the gap and stepping in when other arms of government failed.

It is for these reasons that commendation must be given to David Hundeyin, an independent journalist whose extraordinary work and those of many more young people like him has become a source of inspiration. Special thanks must be given to the millions of Nigerian youths and citizen journalists too who continue to put out the truth online even when no one is listening. Indeed, the price of Liberty is Eternal Vigilance. They have put the country first in their firm commitment to unravel the truth and hold leaders accountable. This gives me the hope that we have worthy partners in the struggle to reclaim the country we call home.

This quest is not for or about Atiku Abubakar. It is a quest for the enthronement of truth, morality, and accountability in our public affairs. In line with this, therefore, I am calling on all well-meaning Nigerians, leaders of thought, our religious leaders, our traditional leaders, our community leaders, our political leaders, and in particular, Governor Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP and, the leaders of every political party in Nigeria, and, indeed, every single person who loves this country, as I do, and who wishes nothing but the best for the country, as I do, to join me in this campaign to enshrine probity, accountability and the basic principles of justice, morality and uprightness in our country and in our government. This is a task for each and every one of us.

Thank you for listening. May God bless you, and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Nigeria Army Court-martials General  For Stealing

0
Major General Umar Muazu Mohammed

By Adesina Soyooye

Major General Umar Muazu Mohammed had a good, flourishing career in the Nigeria Army, until he was posted to the Nigeria Army Properties Ltd as its Group Managing Director/Executive Vice Chairman.

It is this posting that has landed him in trouble. He has not only lost the high profile job, but he has disgracefully been sent out of the Army. He faced humiliations too.

On the day of his appearance before the Court Martial, he came in a wheelchair, given the impression that he would be unable to stand for the trial.  But the Chairman of the Court ordered him to keep standing insisting he was fit and strong to stand.

Now, the General has been found guilty by a Special Court Martial set up by the Army of stealing. He has been court-martialled. He was hauled before the Court

for stealing the sum $1,476,200, N74million.

Out of the l 18 count charges against him which  all run contrary to service laws, he was found guilty of 14 of them. The charges against him include stealing, forgery, conspiracy, theft, and unauthorized diversion of Army property among others.

Part of the charges was that he  collected the sum of $1.045,400 paid by shipping companies for the use of Nigerian Army Jetty located at no 6 Marina, Victoria Island, Lagos.

He was found guilty of Stealing the sum of $430.800 “being monies paid into Nigerian Army Domiciliary account at Unity Bank, Abuja for use of Nigerian Army Jetty, Marina, VI, Lagos”

Major Gen Mohammed was, also, found guilty of withdrawing and confiscating the sum of N74million out of N75million paid for a property belonging to the Nigerian Army at Ikoyi, Lagos.

He was, however, exonerated on allegations of selling Army property worth N200million in Lagos and stealing the sum of another N750million out of the sum of N2.5billion secured from banks as well as contribution from subscribers for a Army housing estate in Asokoro, Abuja

He was, also, exonerated from charges of “forging a Deed of Agreement document pursuant to confiscating another Army property in Lagos.”

Major General Kames Myam was the President of the Special Court Martial which had seven (7) other Major Generals as members. A Brigadier- General was the Judge Advocate. Its sentences for the accused will be read  next week.

He is, however, entitled to appeal.

Are You in That Number Saved by Uzodimma?

In a country of 133 million multidimensional poor, with youth unemployment at 53.40 percent, it would be a pity if anyone looking for an opportunity to earn a living missed the chance to hear the Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma recently.

In a campaign speech for his second term, Uzodimma promised, as my father would have said, what Napoleon in all his extraordinary conquests and ambition could not even have dreamed of.

In my humble view, it’s Japa 2.0, a giant leap forward for the youth delivered in a moment of creative genius, the last of which was seen when the Supreme Court’s ruling on his election petition sprung His Excellency from number four position on the Imo ballot list of contestants in 2019, all the way to the Government House.

I must dispense with any further rigmarole and get to the point, while the governor’s generous offer lasts. The governor told a crowd of excited, cheering youths who came to visit him at the Government House on September 26, that he had finally come up with a plan to put at least 4,000 of them out of unemployment, as part of his “Skill Up Imo” programme. He said he had spoken with representatives of some Canadian and European firms in Nigeria. The companies would not only train these youths, but also send them to different choice destinations in North America and Europe to work.

As if that was not enough, he then added that his government was prepared to pay the flight tickets of all 4,000 eligible persons once their employment has been processed, with the possibility, I might add, that a few lucky ones may even fly first class!

Upon hearing this bonanza, the crowd roared and roared in raptures of ecstasy. Of course, the governor didn’t have to say this too-good-to-believe offer was tied to the potential beneficiaries voting for him at the November 11 governorship election in the state. Quid pro quo was implied.

Campaign in lullaby

Mario Cuomo’s dictum that politicians campaign in poetry doesn’t really do justice to politicians of the Nigerian variety. They do much better – they campaign in lullaby.

In 1999, for example, a fellow called Ahmed Yerima campaigned for governorship, promising to make Zamfara the believer’s paradise. He vowed to end corruption and enthrone justice and prosperity through political sharia. The seed of his green-eyed fanaticism has bred a deadly variety of bandits that haunt that state today.

Another fellow, SaminuTuraki, promised that if he was elected governor, Jigawa would become Africa’s Silicon Valley, with a tablet for every voter. It turned out, however, that the only time there was Internet service in the state for most of his tenure was immediately after he received billions of naira in monthly allocation from Abuja. Once the money entered the state’s treasury all lines to the Government House were unreachable until the next allocation.

There’s even a more recent example of campaign by lullabies, the sort that is now ensuing from Imo State. A gentleman governor called Professor Ben Ayade promised among a litany of things during his campaign that he would build a 260km superhighway from Calabar to Katsina-Ala in Benue State. He also promised a deep-sea port in Bakassi and a cargo airport in Obudu.

Voters bought his snake oil and repurchased it by giving him a second term. After eight years, they woke up to the harsh reality of the empty musical notes of Ayade’s broken promises.

Uzodimma-nistan

Perhaps Uzodimma would be different? What is the price of a vote, anyway, compared with the prospects of a new life, so bright and beautiful that the vistas only compare with a terrestrial realm which, permit my limited imagination, I can only describe as Uzodimma-nistanat this time?

As I watched the excitement and anticipation in the mostly young crowd, I felt sorry for Uzodimma’s opponents who have so far been thoroughly unimaginative. All they have been doing when they’re not pressing for the Charter of Equity that they say should disqualify the governor from re-contesting, is to talk about some plan to make Imo safe and secure again, and how to end graft and corruption in government.

After listening to Uzodimma’s extraordinary redemption plan for Imo youths, his opponents should humble themselves and take remedial classes from this man who has been a consummate snake oil salesman long before Imo River.

The governor’s announcement on September 26 may appear ordinary to the undiscerning, but a friend of mine and obviously a closet Uzodimma admirer expanded the grand dimensions of the governor’s Japa 2.0 programme, totally hidden from my simple heart.

When I criticised the scheme as a cheap and foolish campaign gimmick, my friend admonished me promptly. How could I compare Uzodimma with Yerima or Turaki or Ayade? Couldn’t I see the governor’s ingenuity, he asked?

New industry

First, he said, all the talk about insecurity and corruption would vanish once the 4,000 ambassadors started working and remitting foreign exchange back home. And second, how could I not also see that the announcement by the governor, an accomplished salesman, had unleashed a cottage industry of sorts in the state already?

According to my friend, as soon as the governor promised to provide jobs for 4,000 youths in Canada and Europe and also to pay their airfares, some smart folks in and around government would take the matter to greater imaginative heights

In the next few days or weeks, for example, expect some people who might start hawking forms for Cohort One of either the Canadian or European editions of “Skill Up Imo.” If these retailers of snake oil charge only N5,000 per form, for example, they would have made N20m, if only 4,000 bought forms – a very conservative estimate in a state with an estimated population of 5.2 million, mostly youths!

Imagine what that means for both the personal and government internally generated revenue. Between the sale of forms to the multiple rounds of screening, tests and final selection, my friend said, surely the good times would be back again.

Think of the hundreds, if not thousands, of young people who instead of risking their lives in the desert of North Africa and the perilous Mediterranean Sea to get to Europe now have the opportunity of not only being trained by some of the best companies in the world but also being employed by them. And all of this on Uzodimma’s ticket, just for the price of a vote to return His Excellency to office!

Reverse migration never looked so potentially profitable and America and Europe should have no difficulty seeing the win-win in this grand scheme. I therefore urge all busybodies trying to fact-check the governor to think about the implication of their action on this laudable and patriotic project and to desist forthwith.

My regret

My only regret perhaps is that non-indigenes registered to vote in Imo may not benefit from this programme, although it is likely that given the wild excitement that greeted the announcement and the likely political harvest, the governor may extend this scheme to non-indigenous voters as well, as long as they vote for him and retain a certified true copy of their ballot paper.

There’s a saying in my neck of the woods that if a fashion designer is offering to make you a special wear you must first look at what he is wearing. Surely, anyone like His Excellency, who registered a company in 2012 with a share capital of N5m and won a dredging contract of N26 billion five years later which was diligently not executed, should be trusted to send only 4,000 Imo voters to the moon and back, without much difficulty.

As they say in the South East, “Yakpotuba!”

Nigeria Ranks Highest In Female Genital Mutilation – UNICEF

Olayemi Oyebanji - Ekiti State First Lady

By Ayodele Oni

Wife of Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, has promised  to step up the fight against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) through a collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

Dr. Oyebanji gave the assurance when she received a delegation from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and two civil society organizations, Balm in Gilead Foundation (BIGIF) and Gender Mobile Initiative.

Represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Peju Babafemi, Dr. Oyebanji declared that a total war would be waged and sustained against FGM which she described as a form of Gender Based Violence (GBV).

She explained that her office has developed a work plan in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development noting that the Civil Society Organizations would receive the support of the state government in sensitizing the citizenry against FGM.

Describing the practice as “degrading and dehumanizing,” the First Lady told her guests that various initiatives had been put in place to reduce FGM in the state which include the “Drop the Blade” Campaign across the grassroots to discourage the practitioners of the practice and save the girl-child.

According to her, other initiatives like Adolescent Girls’ Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) and Back to School Programme are complementary to the fight against FGM and other forms of GBV.

She said: “FGM is degrading and dehumanizing and so in all our advocacy programmes, we are making sure that we speak against FGM and we are also taking practical steps in organizing sensitization programmes in conjunction with CSOs on the issue of FGM.

“With the commitment of the Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji Administration to eradicating GBV especially FGM, we are going to have a great success.

“In a coupe of days, GBV Management Committee led by the First Lady will start working after the inauguration as Mr. Governor has approved the composition of that Committee.

“For us here in Ekiti, it is a total war against FGM and UNICEF will not be disappointed by supporting our CSOs in supporting our vision. We pledge our unflinching commitment to the movements to end FGM.”

Earlier, the Nigeria Chief Child Protection Specialist, United Nations Child Education Fund, UNICEF, Mrs. Hadiza Ibrahim noted that the country has one of the highest prevalence in Africa.

She remarked that much successes had however been made through national policies and action plans with the support of local government, religious leaders and traditional rulers.

Mrs. Ibrahim emphasized that  Nigerians needed to be involved, by standing up against those that were actually perpetrating, aiding and abetting the scourge.

The UNICEF chief described the Office of the First Lady and the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development as the rallying points for galvanizing, mobilizing and encouraging all women-led organizations and groups to make commitment and join the movement to end FGM for good in the state.

Gunmen Abduct Professor Ndifon, Embattled Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Calabar

Gunmen have abducted the  suspended Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Calabar, Professor Cyril Ndifon.

The Professor of Law was abducted from his residence, Akpabuyo Local Government Area,  Cross River State.

Ndifon had earlier raised an alarm that he was trailed by masked gunmen who attempted to abduct him to a Church.

Professor Ndifon was suspended by the University  authorities over allegations of se€ual harassment by female Law students of the University who protested against him in front of the Vice Chancellor’s office. He denied all allegations, but an Investigative Panel set up on the matter indicted him as well as on other sundry issues.

Confirming the abduction of  Ndifon, his son, David, said the gunmen invaded their home between 11pm Wednesday, and early Thursday morning, fired several gunshots, and harassed the family by pointing guns at them.

He said: “It is true. He was taken away by gunmen. The incident happened between the hours of 11pm on Wednesday and the early hours of Thursday.

“We have been trying our best and making necessary calls to ensure his safe return.”

Neither the Police nor the University authority has, so far, issued a statement on the incident.

Kano: Protesters To High Commission In UK Demanding Justice-NNPP

0

The New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, has denied the allegation that the party sponsored a protest at the Nigeria High Commission in London on October 1.

Some Nigerians staged a protest to the High Commission office to show their dissatisfaction with the recent ruling of the Kano State Election Tribunal which invalidated the election of Governor Abba Yusuf.

On September 20, the tribunal declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Nasir Gawuna, the immediate past Deputy Governor,  winner of the governorship election.

In its reaction to the protest, the National Coalition of All Progressives Congress, APC Stakeholders blamed the ruling NNPP in the state.

Responding, the NNPP said the protesters were only expressing their anger over the judgment, which has nothing to do with the party.

The reaction came from a chieftain of the NNPP,  Ladipo Johnson, who stated in a statement on Wednesday that the outrage over the nullification of Governor Yusuf caused the protest in the UK, adding that it’s within the fundamental human rights of Nigerians abroad to show their dissatisfaction over what is happening in the country.

Johnson said: “As far as we know those protesters are Nigerians resident abroad who merely denounced what they see as an act of injustice as they proclaimed in their placards.

“Obviously, they are not the usual rented crowd like we see by the APC but true patriots who drew our attention and that of the global community to a sense of injustice. It is only reasonable to take into account their messages for redemption.

“The truth is that the protest obviously touched the nerves of the APC and we could see that in their negative reactions.

“However, the protest by those patriotic Nigerians has brought to the consciousness of the global community the fact that the Nigerian judiciary now needs help to be truly independent. So contrary to such negative colorations by the APC, the protesters only stressed this point rather than fighting the judiciary or any agencies of government.”

Meanwhile, the NNPC-led government in the state has called for calm among the residents, after filing an appeal at the Court of Appeal to overturn the ruling of the lower court.
