Anambra: Onitsha Community Gives FG’s Agency Quit Notice On Parcel Of Land

By Ayodele Oni

For failure to renew an age long agreement on land lease, the Onitsha Traditional Council, in Anambra state, has hinted of possible eviction of the Nigeria Correctional Services (NCS) from the parcel of plot currently being occupied.

This was contained in a statement signed on behalf of the Obi of Onitsha, Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, by his Chief of Staff, Chief Osita Anionwu.

According to Onitsha community, the land  which NCS currently occupies was given to the colonial government on lease for 99 years during the precolonial era and that the lease has expired, saying the community is not interested in another renewal.

The statement reads: “The facilities of the correctional services agency are located on parcels of land, properties of the Umudei Quarters, lylawu Quarters, and Okposi Eke section of Ogboli Eke Quarters are in the Akpaka area of Onitsha.

“We’re insisting that the Nigeria Correctional Services should put a stop to its appropriation of parcels of land belonging to Onitsha families, and that these should revert to the owners.

“The Onitsha Traditional Council observed that beyond the occupation of the parcels of land for which the lease agreement had expired, the NCS has gone ahead to encroach on adjoining parcels of land including that which has been set aside for the National Maritime Institute, a federal government agency under the Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

“Despite the expiration of a lease of agreement in respect of the parcels of land, which hitherto were used as farmlands by the Onitsha families, the Nigeria Correctional Services has continued to lay claim to them.

“The land was given out by a lease agreement signed by the Obi of Onitsha, acting for and on behalf of the chiefs of Onitsha, with the Colonial Government dated July 22, 1910.

“Onitsha leased the land to the Colonial Government for a term of 99 years with no renewal clause. With the expiration of the lease in 2009, the Nigeria Correctional Services took unilateral action to scuttle the non-renewal of the 1910 lease agreement, a development which is unacceptable to the Onitsha community.”

The community called on the agency to remove structures placed on their lands, including reestablishing the thoroughfares to the various Onitsha shrines in the vicinity.

He said the people are not just interested in the upgrade but are excited about it.

Welcoming the team at the New EXCO Chambers Government House, Owerri on Friday, the Governor thanked the assessment team from the federal government and prayed that their recommendations will be consistent with the desires and expectations of the people of Imo State.

Governor Uzodimma recalled how he got two letters from the federal government on the approval for Federal University Teaching Hospital from the Federal Medical Centre Owerri and another on the upgrade of Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education to a Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, and the excitement that greeted the announcement when he communicated the good news to  Imo people.

He said they have been waiting for the consummation of both ideas and assured the team that the Government and people of Imo State will do whatever is expected of them to ensure a smooth running and implementation of the upgrade in line with their assessment.

“The Government and people of Imo State are ready to provide them,” the Governor assured.

Earlier, the team Leader, a Director from the Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Mrs. Uche Uba, had informed that they were in Imo State “to carry out a comprehensive audit on the present status of the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education for upgrade to a University status.”

She also explained that the audit includes “the physical structures, the academic structures, and any other thing that will enhance and support the upgrade of such nature.”

Dr. Uba said that they had finished with their assignment and thought it wise to inform the Governor about what they came to do before returning to Abuja to submit their report.

Those from Abuja were accompanied on the visit to the Governor by the Provost, Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Dr. Mrs. Stella Ngozi Lemchi and her Principal Officers.

Hope Uzodimma with Mary Odili

Public attention has again been drawn to the quality of Governor Hope Uzodimma’s legacy projects in Imo State, with Honourable Justice Mary Peter-Odili JSC, (retired), saying that the Governor has written his name in gold.

She said the quality of Uzodimma’s physical projects in Imo and the reforms he has initiated in the State’s Judiciary will outlive him.

Justice Odili, Chairman, Body of Benchers spoke as Governor Uzodimma  reiterated his commitment to the total recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction of both tangible and intangible things in Imo State.

Justice Odili, spoke on Friday at the Concorde Hotel, Owerri, in her capacity as the Guest of Honour/Unveiler of the Imo State Law Reports (2004- 2022).

Taking to the Podium to unveil and present the Law Reports, the first to be published in the history of Imo State, an excited Justice Odili told an equally joyous galaxy of legal luminaries that she was not only unveiling the reports but Uzodimma and his legacy projects.

Her words: “We are unveiling Chief Hope Uzodimma and his legacy projects in Imo State, both in infrastructure and legal profession. He has done that which has been left unattended for more than 20 years.

“I don’t think our Governor knew what he was doing when he authorized that a committee be set up to embark on this law reports project. Therefore, we are not just unveiling the reports but unveiling Hope Uzodimma and encouraging him to do more.”

While harping on the benefits of the Law Reports to the State and the judiciary, Justice Odili noted that judges, both serving and retired, as well as legal practitioners, will find them handy as they go about plying their trade.

She said the reports are veritable resource materials that children yet unborn in Imo State who desire to study law will be glad to behold just as the judges whose works were captured therein will be glad to reflect on their activities.

“It is also a way of documenting the hard work of the judges and generally, the lawyers of Imo State,” she said, noting that there will also be something to learn from reports whose cases were lost in the courts.

She encouraged all the legal practitioners and members of the public to get copies of the reports.

In his remarks, Governor Uzodimma said his desire to see the Imo State judiciary function in a contemporary world with all the necessary reforms informed his decision to direct that the Law Reports be put together by the ministry.

He expressed delight over the outcome describing it as a feat the judiciary ought to be happy about.

He reminded the audience that on assumption of office in 2020, his administration was determined to embark on programmes and projects that would add value to the society and enhance the quality of life of the citizenry.

Governor Uzodimma, however, challenged the ministry of justice of the State to go beyond their expectations of having Law Reports that are in hard copies and work towards migrating them to the soft copy, bearing in mind that the New World is digital.

He said doing so would also mean “value addition to the reports.”

The Governor thanked the dignitaries who graced the occasion, particularly Justice Odili, the Chairman of the occasion represented by Chief Mike Ahamba SAN, the President of the Nigeria Bar Association, Yakubu Maikyau who was also represented by Mrs. Buma Alabi, SAN, among others.

Earlier in their goodwill remarks, the Chief Judge of Imo State, Honourable Justice Theresa Chukwuemeka-Chikeka, the Chairman of the occasion, Justice Abdu Aboki (rtd) represented by Chief Ahamba, SAN, the President of the Nigeria Bar Association, Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, represented by Mrs. Alabi, SAN, expressed delight over the report which they all agreed, will enhance legal services and impact tremendously on Imo State’s judiciary.

In his address, the Imo State Honourable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Chief COC Akaolisa specifically thanked Governor Uzodimma for all the support he has extended to the judiciary under his watch for reforms and pleaded with him not to relent for posterity sake.

Akaolisa was also full of gratitude to Justice Odili, all the legal egg heads from within the  and outside Imo State who graced the occasion, the traditional rulers, the academia, political class, among others for finding time to be part of the event.

National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC),  Iyiola Omisore, visited Akure, Ondo state capital on Friday to douse tension occasioned by declaration of the national chairman on health challenges of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

APC Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu had remarked during a meeting in Abuja with state chairmen of the party that Akeredolu was seriously bedridden.

Omisore told leaders of the party that he was optimistic that Akeredolu, would soon return to the State, to continue attending to the development needs of the people.

He assured the government and people of the State that there should be no need for alarm, but prayers for Mr. Governor, after sufficient rest.

Omisore who said he was “solidarity visit,” met with the Acting Governor, Lucky Ayedatiwa, State Chairman, Engr. Ade Adetimehin, members of the State Working Committee, Secretary to the State Government, Princess Oladunni Odu, Chief of Staff, Chief Gbenga Ale, Members of the House of Assembly, Commissioners, and other top government officials.

The APC chieftain said the National Secretariat regretted the twist in the recent wish and prayer of the National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, for the governor.

He insisted that at no time did the National Chairman said the governor is incapacitated, lamenting that some section of the press only opted to be mischievous and reported “what they feel makes news”.

The visit, he explained, was meant to dispel the misapprehension of the sincere and noble statement, and put the record straight.

“Mr. Chairman only urged people to pray for the quick recovery of your governor; not on account of being incapacitated.

“Our visit, therefore, is to reinforce the position of the national secretariat that we only prayed for the quick recovery of  Akeredolu and not otherwise.”

He further assured that the national secretariat is on the same page with the State, and would always offer support, when necessary.

Earlier, the State Chairman, Ade Adetimehin, had dismissed the insinuation that the state chapter is in crisis. He insisted that the party is as united as ever, under the leadership of Akeredolu.

Adetimehin explained that the State is still savouring its enviable contributions to the party’s victory at the last presidential election, and, therefore, has no place for bickerings.

Also, the Acting Governor,  Lucky Ayedatiwa, expressed appreciation to the visiting team, for taking the pain to visit on solidarity ground.

He lamented unprofessional twisting facts, by some members of the press, and opt for outright falsehood.

Ayedatiwa called on journalists to always cross-check, when in doubt, to avoid embarrassing and misleading people.

The National Secretary was accompanied by the Deputy National Secretary, Mr. Festus Fuanter, National Vice Chairman (North Central), Hon. Bawa Muazu, and National Vice Chairman (South West), Hon. Isaacs Kekemeke.

Morning After The Rise And Implosion Of a UTME Ponzi Scheme

By Tiko Okoye

Quite early in the narrative, the saga of Mmesoma Ejikeme assumed the form of a violent storm interwoven with thunder and lightning as self-professing “Good Samaritans” rushed to free our modern-day Goldilocks from the savage vice-grip of a frightening and bullying JAMB bear.

‘Pro-bono’ lawyers made a song and dance about enmeshing the Joint Admissions Matriculations Board (JAMB) – organisers of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) – in lawsuits if it didn’t cease and desist forthwith from assassinating the character of the ‘harmless, poor girl.’ Scholarships were freely thrown at Mmesoma by men with deep pockets, ostensibly in honour of her trailblazing and pacesetting prowess.

The noisy pushback by crusaders of Mmesoma’s defiant efforts to go to the stake over her UTME result appeared to get more audacious and boisterous as JAMB desperately tried to initially use technology to expose gaping holes in her claims. Her promoters primed her to give an emotion-laden prime-time television interview aimed at highlighting JAMB’s ‘ethnic bias’ and ‘insincerity.’

A Facebook user claiming to be an eyewitness at the centre where Mmesoma sat for the UTME disclosed that her computer system developed glitches and stopped working. Someone went on air to offer the embattled girl a foreign scholarship after the initial donor of a N3million university scholarship started having second thoughts, even as many people continued to raucously hail and clap.

But somewhere down the road, things started turning curiouser and ugly, with Mmesoma finally confessing that she forged her 2023 UTME result. She and her family will forever rue why they allowed greed to get the better of them because her original score of 249 is good enough to fetch her admission in any Nigerian university of her choice, given JAMB’s cut-off score of 140. Mmesoma’s plight is a fitting reminder of 16th US President Abraham Lincoln’s admonition that “There is no grievance that is a fit object of redress by mob law.”

It occurred to me that if Mmesoma had committed suicide, as she confessed she was on the cusp of doing, her blood would’ve been on the heads of the mob who were way off base. We must remain grateful to the human rights activist – Harrison Gwamnishu (tellingly not a member of her own tribe) – she desperately reached out to for help.

And although her delusions of grandeur came crashing down when an official of the Anambra State Government matter-of-factly sought confirmation from JAMB, it cannot be gainsaid that JAMB’s effective use of technology served as the last straw that broke the camel’s back.

Prof. Oloyede’s managerial acumen, administrative profundity and unassailable integrity that have transformed JAMB from a cesspool of frauds to a well-oiled national examination body were sorely tested by the Mmesoma controversy. Here’s a government official who has been consistently refunding billions of naira to the federation account.

Recall that JAMB’s attempt to use technology to solve the Mmeoma riddle was greeted with howls of derision on social media platforms and sympathetic television houses. But in the end, JAMB effectively used the same technology to convince every doubting Thomas that Mmesoma was older (19) than what she claimed her age to be (16); that in an attempt to mask her fraud she used the name of a CBT centre no longer in existence; and that she superimposed her inflated subject scores on the 2022 UTME result slip rather the 2023 version that had been reconfigured.

There were so many red flags and this saga would’ve become dead-on-arrival like several others, if political and ethnic local champions and portmanteau ‘girl rights activists’ hadn’t allowed their base motives to overwhelm their sense of balance and conscientiousness. For whatever it was worth, Osita Chidoka, former FRSC Corps Marshall, ex-Minister of Aviation and proprietor of the CBT centre where Mmesoma supposedly sat for the UTME dismissed her score and underlining story as fake news, even as he appealed to her to “come clean.” But he might as well have been addressing a deaf and dumb convention.

It is true that the manner other ethnic nationalities used the Mmesoma controversy to diss the entire Igbo nation, but we have no one but ourselves to blame for this monstrous stereotyping considering the way our social media gladiators recklessly went to war in Mmesoma’s defence. An African adage that a property owner should blem no else after the firewood he carried to his own house starts transforming it into a meeting place for lizards.

Why nary a word from the lawyer who had bragged about making legal mincemeat of JAMB in court? Where are those who sought to chase clout by publicising their determination to offer Mmesoma full scholarships now that the authentic highest scorer has been announced (Nkechinyere Umeh), who incidentally comes from the same Anambra State? Why no rush to similarly smother her with scholarships if their intentions were altruistic?

That the whole saga was also perceived through politically-tinted lenses of ‘Us versus Them’ can be seen from all the related imageries and central theme of ‘Whataboutism’ – defined as the technique or practice of responding to an allegation or thorny question by making a counter-allegation or raising a different issue. That the Mmesoma episode appeared to be an exercise in whataboutism can be gleaned from the fact that most of her supporters and fans were ‘marrying’ her case with that of President Bola Tinubu currently playing out at the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal/Court of Appeal.

They were so taken in by their sanctimoniousness that they failed to identify the embedded contradiction of asking the general public to patiently await the findings of independent investigative panels prior to making a decision on the case of the beleaguered Mmesoma, even as they rushed to scream “Guilty as charged!” at Tinubu without so much as one valid decision by any court of competent jurisdiction!

The reference to glitches supposedly experienced by Mmesoma’s computer was just a not-too-subtle satirical dig at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that keeps saying that it couldn’t honour its pledge to upload results directly to its IReV because the portal suffered a glitch during the presidential election.

Still, it must be said that just as calves learn to chew cud by watching mother-cows, the youths are seeing how grown-up leaders and officials are committing all manner of crimes with little or no repercussion and they grow up believing that it simply boils down to being able to beat the system. They also deduce, rightly or wrongly, that with the adults in a compromised position and unfit to be good role models, they cannot be judged by society, as it becomes a case of “Let him that’s without sin cast the first stone.”

The initial strident pushback at JAMB is unquestionably attributable to a total lack of public trust in government institutions and agencies. Unfortunately, this is a virus that’s afflicting virtually every part of the world but that doesn’t mean that the rot should be left unchecked in Nigeria. If the Tinubu administration aims to really deliver on its pledge to deepen the nation’s democratic process then it must add the building of strong institutions to its work order.

We must now begin to hold the feet of our appointed and elected leaders very close to the fire to enhance accountability and transparency, not by querulous and wasting, all knife and root-puller criticisms but, as American essayist and philosopher advocated, “by guiding, instructive, inspiring criticisms.”

It is only then the society will start correctly repositioning its value system, knowing, for instance, that, while the behaviour of an Mmesoma may be construed to be trivial in many quarters, it is nevertheless a constituent part of the little foxes that spoil the vines bearing tender grapes. Both small and big sins should spark public rage whenever committed as they are equally inimical to sustainable development and progress.

Many have come to perceive Mmesoma a hardened street-smart youth who not only had the pluck to take her case directly to her school principal and the Anambra Commissioner for Education – and JAMB itself! They feel ashamed to confess that she completely fooled them with feigned innocence and a disarming mien. Still, my gut feeling tells me that she couldn’t have perpetuated the crime on her own, given her very humble background.

I also believe that her case is simply emblematic of the ocean of rot this country is wallowing in. That’s why the decision by the Anambra State Government to be responsible for her psychological evaluation and treatment is very commendable. Mmesoma needs our empathy much more than our vilification.

But doing so must come at a price. She must be ready to disclose the address of the cybercafe where the forgery was committed as well as the identity of the primary hacker who superintended the job and all those who chaperoned her television interviews.

Muslim Group Warns Skit Makers Against Deriding Islamic Ethics, Values, Insensitive Content

Sulaymon Tadese

By Akinwale Kasali

A Religious Group under the auspices of Ta’awunu Human Rights Initiative has urged Skit Makers to be sensitive with their contents and guide against deriding Islamic ethics and values.

The Islamic Group stressed that playing pranks on innocent citizens, passers-by, aged and ailing people has become the order of the day among Skit  Makers and described it as  unacceptable.

A statement on Friday, signed by the Director General THURIST-Nigeria, Sulaymon Tadese, said that the rate at which morality and dignity of humans are being dragged in the mud in the name of skit making is alarming and need to be properly and promptly addressed to forestall any unwarranted consequences that may arise therefrom.

The statement reads: “Skit makers have now made anyone a cast in shooting skit to gain netizens’ attention at the expense of the inconvenience of innocent citizens, passers-by, unsuspecting job seekers, aged and ailing people anywhere and at any time.

“ It is important to state that the recent threat to the life of a veiled woman in a recent viral video is one of the many threats and dangers skit makers expose innocent citizens to in the name of Skit making.

“How do you explain a sane person pranking a woman dressed in a dignified religious garb as in the case of Niqob lady in the viral video and her attending reaction in the name of skit making? Isn’t that an indication that there are no regulations governing the act of skit-making in this country?”

THURIST further urges the public, skit makers, and aspiring skit makers to refrain from pranking or creating skits that target innocent citizens, particularly women who wear veils. They state that these individuals should be treated with respect due to their distinguished and exceptional appearance.

The Group called on the Government to regulate social media and skit-making to prevent the breakdown of law and order.

It noted that the unconfirmed reports that the man in the viral video has been arrested should serve as a warning to other skit makers.

It would be recalled a Skit Maker, Maruf Abdullahi, with the nickname, Trinity Guy has been remanded in Prison for assaulting an underage with his Skit Making leading to him been sued by the Oyo State Police Command.
