0

The Anambra state caucus in the House of Representatives, has elected Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, who represents Ogbaru Federal Constituency, as its leader.

Ogene, who is Chairman, House Committee on Renewable Energy, was elected on Tuesday, November 7, in a keenly contested election between him and Hon. Paschal Agbodike, who represents Ihiala Federal Constituency.

The Anambra state caucus is made up of 11 members that cut across party lines.

Ogene, in his acceptance speech after the election, pledged to provide credible leadership that would galvanise the Anambra state representatives to work for the common good of the state and their respective constituents.

Speaking further, he said, “Representative democracy benefits from unity of purpose and collaboration with others, either as a bloc, across party lines, region or other interests, because no one, no matter how experienced or connected, can do it alone.

“We in Anambra state caucus, intend to pull our contacts, experiences, creativity and energy together, as a unit, devoid of partisanship, in order to give quality representation to our people in a way that would add value to governance and ultimately reinforce their faith in democracy.”

Ogene, a second term House of Representatives member, is also the Labour Party, LP, caucus leader in the House.

Uzodimma Did Not Block Kanu’s Release, Not Deterred By The Lies Using President’s Name

0

The Director General of the Hope New Media, Dr Paul Ihunanya, has dismissed, as a lie from the pit of hell the story dumped on Imolites and discerning Nigerians that President Bola Tinubu told a group of unnamed Igbo Stakeholders that Governor of Imo State, Hope  Uzodimma, asked him not to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, detained Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, from custody.

In a public announcement, Dr Ihunanya drew attention to the plan by unscrupulous opposition to flood the State with series of propaganda against the Governor in the days leading to the November 11 Governorship election.

The story on the Governor, blocking the release of Mazi Kanu, he said, is one of them.

Following, is the full text of the announcement.

BEWARE PROPAGANDA IS BACK IN IMO STATE

“Our attention has been drawn to a series of propaganda stories being circulated by some individuals and groups, which are targeted at discrediting the administration of Governor Hope Uzodimma. We wish to state unequivocally that these stories are unfounded, baseless, and without any merit.

“We are aware that these individuals and groups have planned to release several propaganda stories against the Governor which will run successively for until after the election, starting with the alleged manhandle of the NLC president to the current propaganda with the headline “Uzodimma blocking the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kalu- Tinubu”. We wish to state unequivocally that the president never made such statement.

“It is apparent that these political detractors and interlopers are intimidated by the tremendous results  of Governor Hope Uzodimma, and the massive support and endorsement of his re-election by the people of Imo State. We urge the public to be wary of these propaganda stories and to disregard them as they are baseless and unfounded.

“The Imo State Government under the shared prosperity leadership of Governor Hope Uzodimma is committed to delivering quality governance to the people of the state, and southeast at large and will support any strategic dialogue to see that Mazi Nnamdi Kalu regain his freedom for the betterment of the zone.

“The governor has on several occasions called on Southeast stakeholders to support his strategic dialogue approach for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kalu.

“We, therefore, call on the public to remain calm and vigilant in the face of these propaganda campaigns. The shared prosperity government of Governor Hope Uzodimma will not be distracted from its developmental agenda for the state, and it will continue to work hard to ensure that the people enjoy the dividends of democracy.

Patriot, Pacifist: Interrogating Peter Obi’s Speech

0

By Steve Osuji

Why did it take Peter Obi all of 10 day to speak up? This of course,  is the first point to note. In the rise and ebb of historic moments, timing could be everything. Like a surfer, you must catch the wave of events at its crest or lose the moment for good. This is why not a few Nigerians were troubled about Obi’s silence after the  Supreme Court  “miscarriage” on the last Presidential Election even though he is generally believed to have been robbed of the mandate.

One day passed. One week passed. Many began to see his silence as golden; as the best answer for the pervasive folly of the moment. But the occasion demanded not for silence. It is an exquisite moment in history that must be properly interrogated in order to help history annotate it.

Responding after 10 days may seem rather delayed and could even be construed as an absence of proactive thinking. Remember that the Labour Party, through its chairman,  responded same day the judgment was pronounced.

But the delay in the candidate’s response must be viewed from Peter Obi’s patriotic and pacifist nature. Obi-dients are made up largely of Nigerian youths. They are aggrieved and angry. Rightly so. Were Obi to mount the rostrum immediately after the miscarriage,  one misconstrued word,  an emotion-laden pause or the glimmer of an unshed tear in his eyes could trigger an unintended violence that was bound to lead to  loss of lives and property.

Obi is not bound to violence… that is one object lesson he has been trying to teach Nigerians. Ultimately, violence destroys, it never builds, it doesn’t edify. Obi seems to have taken care not to coax angry Obidients onto the streets. Abuja could be reduced to rubbles in a few days  if current latent angst is transported onto the streets. Obi has said for umpteenth time that he’s not desperate to be president,  he’s desperate to see Nigeria rise to her place of destiny among the comity of states.

Peter Obi
Peter Obi

But Obi left a strong word for the judiciary to chew. In the fourth of the 17-paragraph address, he says:

“Setting legal issues aside,  the Supreme Court exhibited a disturbing aversion to public opinion just as it abandoned its responsibility as a court of law and policy. It is, therefore,  with great dismay that I observe that the court’s decision contradicts the overwhelming evidence of election rigging, false claim of a technical glitch, substantial noncompliance with rules set by INEC itself as well as matters of perjury, identity theft and forgery that have been brought to light in the course of this election matter. These were hefty allegations that should not be treated with levity. More appalling, the Supreme Court judgment wilfully condoned breaches of the constitution relative to established qualifications and parameters for candidates in presidential elections. With this counter-intuitive judgement, the Supreme Court has transferred a heavy moral burden from the courtroom to our national conscience.  Our young democracy is ultimately the main victim and casualty of the courtroom drama.”

Disambiguated, this judgment that affirmed a president not qualified to contest in an election ab initio has seared the soul  of our nation. While the justices will live with this infamy to the end, they have opened a dark, twisted epoch in Nigeria’s history.

The second point to note is that Obi has lived his talk that we don’t have to pull Nigeria down to build her; all we need to do is  dislodge the failed old order of leaders who have captured the state. The old order seeks to push Nigeria into the abyss; unto  violence, destruction and even division into tribal enclaves. That is the last stand of the unconscionable old order holding Nigeria and most of Africa hostage. In their megalomaniacal grip of their various countries they never let go until they have cannibalised the polity and rendered it not fit for human habitation. Obi is not a warlord fighting for an enclave to rule over. He is a believer in the Nigerian state; he believes Nigeria can be built to become among the greatest country in the world. He believes Nigeria’s problem is not her geography nor her numerous tribes. He knows that Nigeria’s problems are located among the worst kind on leaders who have seized her space.

Obi knows that the dampened spirit and  disappointment occasioned by  bankrupt institutions,  especially the electoral body and the judiciary may well present an opportunity for a violent change, but of course there’s always an alternative in every situation.

“ The revolution is postponed, “ Obi profoundly proclaimed to Nigerians yesterday. “This is not the end of the journey,” he added, it’s indeed the beginning.

His believe in a new Nigeria remains unshaken, he said and that New Nigeria is not a journey, but a destination.

“We are now effectively an opposition,” he said. And this must be the crux of his address. Opposition politics had long become extinct in Nigeria. Politicians over time only canvass their stomach and therefore, only seek opportunity to join the gravy train of the ruling party. Obi’s Labour Party has plaintively declared to stand in the gap for Nigerians; to provide the guiding lights for true opposition in Nigeria’s political space.

There’s a compelling need for a strong opposition, he said, LP will provide an anchor for all Nigerians left behind by the present system. It will provide checks and balances, “we will carry our messages to all nooks and cranny of Nigeria,” he averred.

He noted that the nation has heard Labour Party loud and clear and that the party will not drop the gauntlet. “We will continue to canvass good governance, transparency, rule or law, and aggressive production to drive poverty reduction… and most important,  Labour Party will participate robustly in coming elections.

Finally,  though the speech could have enjoyed more elegance and grandiloquent crafting, the thoughts are noble and indeed, statesmanly. It may now be said that here cones a true patriot, the type never seen before on these shores…

CBN: Emefiele’s 5 Months Of Tribulations

0
Emefiele Arrested By DSS
By Bayo Bernard, Business Editor
The five months journey of the sacked Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,  EFCC, is classical of a  powerful state official falling from his high horse to nothingness.
On Monday, the EFCC which arrested Emefiele on October 27 after he was released by the DSS, failed to present him in court, for prosecution, despite a court order to that effect.
The development has left tongues wagging on why the federal government has continued to detain the former CBN governor despite court order for him to be released.
If there’s no concrete evidence to prosecute him, Emefiele should be allowed to go home to his family after languishing in security custody for 150 days, according to some Nigerians who accused the government of flouting court orders in this case.
Other Nigerians who spoke on the issue, however, blamed Emefiele for his current predicament, saying he’s a victim of his own schemes and shenanigans while he was the chief executive of the government-controlled bank.
Justice Olukayode Adeniyi had last week, November 2, ordered the EFCC to charge Emefiele to court or release him immediately.
Instructively, the embattled former CBN governor had already spent over 140 days in the custody of Nigeria’s secret police before he was picked up by the Olukoyede-led EFCC.
Justice Adeniyi’s  order also came amidst calls by various rights groups in the country for the former CBN to be released.
Those who know told the magazine that the refusal by the EFCC to arraign him in court yesterday, points to the fact that Emefiele is not likely to be released any time soon by the anti-graft agency.
“Emefiele will be brought to court when we find enough evidence to arraign him. We are still gathering evidence from the CBN to know the depth of the corruption he left behind in that place. That will take some time,” an EFCC source said on Monday.
Part of the evidence the EFCC would be looking for, sources informed, is how over N1 trillion Anchor Borrowers Fund was mismanaged under Emefiele’s watch as CBN governor.
Recall that the International Monetary Fund, IMF, and World Bank criticized the disbursement of the huge funds set aside to assist rice farmers in the country, describing it as a conduit for some top CBN officials and commercial bank’s which disbursed the funds directly to the beneficiaries as Primary Lending Institutions, PLIs.
The EFCC is also looking at how it can prove the case of economic sabotage against Emefiele in the light of the naira re-denomination policy introduced under his regime as CBN governor.
The Emefiele’s CBN had tried to redesign the N1000, N500, and N200 banknotes, thereby imposing serious sufferings on many Nigerians.
Despite the criticism from not a few Nigerians, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, at the time, who claimed that the policy was designed to stop him from becoming president, Emefiele pressed on with it until the Supreme Court finally stopped its implementation.
One of the areas the EFCC is currently looking at, sources also say,  is how the CBN lied about the nation’s foreign reserves.
It was JP Morgan that in August revealed in a report that the nation’s Forex reserve stood at $3.7 billion, contrary to CBN claim that the reserve is $33.88 billion.
The external reserves stood at $33.88 billion as of August 10, down from $37.08 billion at the end of 2022, data from the CBN claimed at a time.
JP Morgan however debunked the claim: “We estimate that CBN’s net FX reserves were around $3.7 billion at the end of last year, from US$14.0 billion at end-2021,” it said.
JP Morgan also gave the breakdown for emphasis: “FX forwards ($6.84 billion), securities lending ($5.5 billion) and currency swaps ($21.3 billion); and estimating currency swaps by backing out FX forwards and outstanding OTC Futures balances from an overall aggregate published in the financial accounts,” the firm said.
Analysts however said Emefiele could not have taken any action on the foreign reserves without approval from former president Muhammadu Buhari, so, he cannot be totally held liable.
According to sources in the commission, the EFCC has also been handed files by the DSS regarding the alleged N6.9 billion procurement fraud by Emefiele, Sa’adatu Ramallan Yaro, a staff of CBN  and some top official of the apex bank.
The DSS had in August arraigned Emefiele and his alleged accomplice in the case, where it was alleged that Emefiele bridged the country’s procurement laws.
Part of the charge against Emefiele, according the DSS charge sheet is “That you, Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele, male, adult, Sa’adatu Ramallan Yaro, female, adult, and April 1616 Investment Ltd, sometime in 2019 within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, conspired amongst yourselves to use the office of Mr. Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria to confer a corrupt advantage on Sa’adatu Ramallan Yaro, a staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria, by awarding a contract for the supply of 1 (No.) Toyota Landcruiser V8 at the cost of N73,800,000 only to April 1616 Investment Ltd.”
Legal experts insist that Emefiele faces  five years imprisonment without the option of a fine, according to Section 19 of the Corrupt Practises and Other Related Offences Act 2000, if he’s found guilty of illegal enrichment.
In light of all of these, the EFCC needs more time to “gather a solid case against the former CBN governor before he’s brought to court. The new EFCC is not ready for media trial of any suspect untill we can gather a solid case,” another source in the Commission said.
Emefiele’s Journey To Detention
Emefiele was arrested and detained by the DSS in June after his suspension by PresidentTinubu
He was on July 25 arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on “illegal possession” of firearms at a Federal High Court in Lagos and was granted bail in the sum of N20 million.
The two-count charge was later struck out on August 17 after the federal government withdrew the charge.
A fresh 20-count charge was later instituted against him over an alleged conspiracy to carry out procurement fraud, among others.
On September 22, President Tinubu appointed Olayemi Cardoso, to replace Emefiele as Nigeria’s apex bank governor after close to nine years in office.
He was appointed ino the position in 2014 by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Meanwhile, Justice Adeniyi, on Monday, ordered the EFCC to produce Emefiele in court unfailingly on Wednesday, November 8, 2023.
The judge said this is a reaffirmation of his earlier order on November 3, to the anti-graft agency to release the former apex bank governor or charge him to court.

Ibadan: Crashed Private Plane Operated Illegally – David Hundeyin

By Gideon Njoku

David Hundeyin, an investigative Journalist, has alleged that the Private Jet which crashed in Ibadan on Friday, November 3, 2023, was operating illegally in Nigeria’s airspace.

The plane which had on board the Minister for Power, Adebayo Adelabu and 9 others, excluding the crew members,   crashed-landed about 50 metres short of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport Ibadan, Oyo State. But even though the plane was badly damaged, there was no fatality.

The HS 125 aircraft, bearing nationality and registration marks 5N-AMM, was operated by Flint Aero.

It crashed at about 8:21p.m., an hour after it took off from Abuja.

While the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, NSIB, has started an investigation,

Hundeyin, in a post on X alleged that Flint Aero has been operating the crashed plane, as well as other of its planes, illegally, to the full knowledge of some top Aviation Authorities.

According to him, “This aircraft has no permission to operate commercial charter flights as it is registered under a Permit for Non-Commercial Flights (PNCF). This is the permit given to private non-commercial aircraft, and it is cheaper and easier to obtain than a commercial Air Operator Certificate (AOC), because the NCAA rules for private aircraft operation are less stringent than those for commercial aircraft.”

He revealed that: “PNCF holders don’t have to pay the  5% regulatory fees that AOC holders are required to, and the regulatory requirements for pilot training, ground staff training and aircraft maintenance are also less strident because PNCF aircraft are not under any circumstances supposed to carry paying passengers. Senior NCAA personnel (you know yourselves) take a cut of the revenues from these illegal commercial flight operations to keep this whole scam going.”

Following is the full text of

David Hundeyin on X (formerly Twitter):

“Example no 1,055 of why Nigeria has no actual elite to speak of, but rather a bunch of rich dunces who think at the exact same level as your average Rafiu at the mechanic village in Ojokoro:

“The Hawker 800XP aircraft with the tail identifier 5N-AMM and serial number 258286 that crash landed in Ibadan with the Minister of Power onboard is operating illegally in Nigeria with the full knowledge and participation of the NCAA.

“This aircraft has no permission to operate commercial charter flights as it is registered under a Permit for Non-Commercial Flights (PNCF). This is the permit given to private non-commercial aircraft, and it is cheaper and easier to obtain than a commercial Air Operator Certificate (AOC), because the NCAA rules for private aircraft operation are less stringent than those for commercial aircraft.

“Flints Aero Service, the company which operates it, is also operating multiple aircraft under PNCF permission and using them to carry out commercial charter flights. Some of these aircraft include the Hawker 800XP with the tail identifier 5N-ALG and another Hawker 800XP with the tail identifier 5N-AMK.

“PNCF holders don’t have to pay the 5% regulatory fees that AOC holders are required to, and the regulatory requirements for pilot training,  ground staff training and aircraft maintenance are also less strident because PNCF aircraft are not under any circumstances supposed to carry paying passengers. Senior NCAA personnel (you know yourselves) take a cut of the revenues from these illegal commercial flight operations to keep this whole scam going.

“Now a sitting cabinet minister who may or may not know about all this has almost died in an accident on an illegal, unlicensed commercial flight run by his fellow “elite” who was willing to risk his life to save some money, and was enabled by top ranking NCAA staff who will inevitably try to cover this up by hanging the blame entirely on Flints Aero Service.

“Honestly, I kind of wish he had died. Maybe only the death of one of their number will force the so-called Nigerian elite to think long and hard about whether running a country in such a disastrously primitive and selfish manner for the sole and exclusive purpose of exploiting everyone and everything for pitiful amounts of profit will work out for everyone INCLUDING THEMSELVES in the long run.

The 15 other candidates are    expected to be the “Also ran.”

Presidency Advises Obi To Accept Fate, Get Engaged In Something Else

Peter Obi

By Ayodele Oni

The Presidency has admonished the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the February 25, 2023 Presidential election, Peter Obi to face reality of life and look for another vocation to engage his time, having been rejected by majority of Nigerians who didn’t consider him qualified to lead the country.

Special Adviser to the President on Information, Bayo Onanuga, while replying to a press conference on Monday during which  Obi rejected the judgement of the Supreme Court which upheld the election of President Bola Tinubu, wondered why he expected the apex Court to base judgement on mere rumours.

In a statement, the Presidential aide stated:

“We wonder how the Labour Party candidate expected the Courts to do justice on the basis of rumours, lies and false narratives by sponsored partisans and fanatical members of his Obidient Movement.

“We expected the Labour Party candidate to know that the Supreme Court or any other Court does not give judgment based on public opinion and mob sentiments. Judicial pronouncements are based on evidence, precedents and the rule of law.

“Having admitted that the Supreme Court ruling brought an end to litigation and any challenge to the bona-fide of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the validly elected leader of Nigeria and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Obi should have congratulated President Tinubu for his victory and pledge his support, in the spirit of statesmanship.

“But instead, he brought up extraneous matters that he thought the Apex Court should have considered to declare him the winner. In our view, the drowning Obi, just like Atiku, was merely attempting to hold on to a straw in raking up new allegations, which exist only in his imagination and that of his hordes of supporters.

“Our admonition to Mr. Peter Obi is to find another worthwhile vocation to engage his time henceforth, having been rejected by majority of Nigerians who didn’t consider him qualified to lead our country.

“Nigerians rejected Peter Obi and his demagoguery at the poll because he posed present and future danger to the peace, progress and stability of our country.

“Obi’s antecedents as Governor of Anambra for eight years didn’t inspire any confidence as someone capable of running a country like Nigeria. No tangible records of achievement in the State he governed recommended him for the Presidency of Nigeria.

“If Mr. Peter Obi truly believes in Nigeria, the time to prove it is now when all men and women of goodwill are rallying support for President Tinubu in his determination to lead a new era of prosperity, inclusive governance and economic growth in Nigeria.”
