Jonathan Calls For More Involvement Of Youths In Governance

0

Chairman of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation and Nigeria’s former President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has called on leaders at all levels to take actions that will deepen citizens’ trust and ensure more youth participation in governance.

The Former President stated this in a message to mark this year’s International Day of Democracy and stressed that for democracy to endure, the promises of freedom, peace and justice must be felt and experienced by the population.

Dr. Jonathan noted that democracy draws its strength from the people and flourishes when there is a great sense of ownership and inclusiveness of citizens in government.

He said: “This year’s theme — “Empowering the Next Generation”, is a call to action on governments across our nations and other stakeholders to accommodate more young people in governments and make more investments in the youth who are critical stakeholders in our democracy.”

Below is the complete Statement of the message :

“On behalf of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, I send my warm greetings to you as we celebrate this year’s International Day of Democracy.

“Democracy has become a global culture of governance because of its inherent values and virtues of freedom, human rights, equity, justice and inclusiveness.

“Democracy is an important means towards achieving peace and national aspirations because it puts citizens at the centre of governance, entrusting them with the power to determine how their country is governed and who governs them.

“Participation of citizens in governance helps to build trust, ensure accountability, foster unity and promote good governance.

“Democracy draws its strength from the people. It flourishes when there is a great sense of ownership and inclusiveness of citizens in government.

“Democracy is experiencing a global decline. In Africa, it is challenged by shrinking civic space, weak institutions, election irregularities, poverty and unconstitutional change of government. We need to prioritise social security issues and access to justice and de-emphasise ethnic and divisive politics to ensure that democracy thrives.

“This year’s theme — “Empowering the Next Generation”, is a call to action on governments across our nations and other stakeholders to accommodate more young people in governments and make more investments in the youth who are critical stakeholders in our democracy.

“The promises of freedom, peace and justice must be felt and experienced by the population for democracy to endure.

“On this occasion of International Democracy Day 2023, I call on stakeholders at all levels to take actions that will build trust and faith and guarantee the hope of citizens in their country.

Imo: Uzodinma Reinstates Sacked Commissioner

Price Ford Ozumba

By Charles Igbo

Price Ford Ozumba has been reinstated as the Commissioner for Labour, Employment and Productivity by Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma.

His reinstatement was made public in the evening of Thursday, September 14, 2023. It comes about two months to the Governorship election in the State. Governor Uzodinma is seeking a second term in office.

Ozumba was first appointed  Commissioner by Uzodinma  in December, 2021,  but removed from office by the Governor  March, 2023, in the wake of the botched State Congress of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC following a fracas which led to the destruction of properties and injuries, allegedly suffered by some delegates to the Congress.

In April 2022, he was a victim of what has been described as the politically induced insecurity in the State. Unknown gunmen invaded his country home in Umuhu-Okabia, Orsu Local Government Area, and razed it down. Mercifully, there was no casualty.

An accomplished Public Relations guru, Ozumba was, recently, elected a Member of the Governing Council of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, NIPR.

His reinstatement to his former office by the Governor is a befitting acknowledgement of his capacity, and the Governor’s magnanimity as a Leader.

By Adesina Soyooye

President Bola Tinubu has revealed that the immediate past Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, holds two positions in his Government.

Receiving a 62-man delegation from Rivers State who came to to visit him at the Presidential Villa, Thursday, the President told them that Wike, currently the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, is not only his Minister, but his Adviser and admirer.

The 62-man delegation was made up of the State’s Stakeholders.

A statement issued by Presidential Spokesperson, Ajuru Ngelale, after the President’s meeting with the delegation quoted the President to have told them: “The Honourable  Minister, Wike, is not just the Minister of FCT, he is also my adviser and an admirer of mine. He has hit the ground running, and he should be encouraged by the State.

Tinubu also urged patience for the Government from the younger generation of Nigerians. He said: “I am the Captain and Chief Salesman of the country. We have to reverse the trend and achieve possibilities within a short period of time. Our people have high expectations for us. I pledge to work hard, and I pray to God to put me on the right path not to disappoint Nigerians.”

Earlier, the delegation had asked the President to help with the infrastructural development of the State, and, particularly, pointed out the Elementary junction-Onne axis of the East-West road linking the Porthacourt Refinery.

Wike, PDP, worked against his Party in the February 25, 2023, Presidential Election. He worked for the Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, now President Tinubu. He was rewarded with the position of the FCT Minister.

He still claims to be a member of the PDP.

For Querying Governor Abiodun Over LGA Funds, Suspended Ijebu East LG Chairman Is Impeached

Wale Adedayo and Dapo Abiodun

By Akinwale Kasali

Hon. Wale Adedayo, suspended Chairman of Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State has been impeached by Councillors of the LG over allegations of financial misappropriation and diversion of Council funds, among other allegations made against him.

The Leader of the Legislative Council of the Local Government, Hon Fasheyi Akindele, disclosed that Adedayo has been impractical.

He said the embattled Council Boss was suspended after he owned up to allegations levelled against him.

In a statement by Akindele, he said, “The Councillors of Ijebu East Local Government of Ogun State earlier today impeached the suspended Chairman of the local government, Hon. Wale Adedayo, over allegations of financial misappropriation and diversion of council funds, among other allegations made against him.

“In a Statement after series of invitations by the House, which were ignored in the past, Adedayo eventually appeared before the legislative council today as the Councillors continued their probe of the chairman.

“The suspended Chairman owned up before the full house of 11 councillors that he diverted Federal allocations sent to the Council by the State Government and used them for purposes other than what the State Government approved.

“Adedayo also agreed that he spent the Council funds till August 2023, even when the budget was yet to be approved, whereas the laws only allow him to spend till March 2023.

“Adedayo also opened up that he used N5.2 million to produce 20 pieces of chairs and tables instead of the 290 chairs that the money was meant for as approved by the state government.

“On the issue of illegal levies and strikers to commercial transport operators in the Local Government, Adedayo said he thought the House had passed the Bill to that effect, but the Leader of the House reminded him that a bill if passed by the House, would have been jointly signed by the Leader of the House and the Council Chairman.

“That the chairman has run foul of the laws of the land, specifically the Ogun State Local Government Laws 2006 and committed serious impeachable offences was therefore established.

After about three hours of deliberation, the impeachment of the Chairman was put to vote. Five councillors voted for his impeachment, four voted against, with one abstention

“Therefore, the Leader of the House pronounced Mr. Wale Adedayo impeached as the Chairman of Ijebu East LG.”

It was gathered that Adedayo had earlier in the morning appeared before the Legislators of the Local Government to defend the allegation of financial misappropriation and maladministration levelled against him

Our Correspondent gathered Adedayo who arrived at the Local Government Secretariat in the company of his two aides at about 7:47am was called in to appear before the councillors around 10:22am and came out around 12:02pm

The Councillors were said to have been brought into the Local Government in a white Coaster civilian bus with Reg Num OGUN AH 782 DED guarded by the police in a white Toyota Hilux patrol van.

At least about 40 security officers drawn from the police, the Directorate of State Security Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were said to have been on the ground to maintain law and order.

Adedayo, while speaking on his appearance before the Councillors, said he was not fighting any personal cause with the Government in power in the state, but fighting for the good people of the Local Government.

Adedayo said, “I was at Ogbere this morning to honour the invitation of the Legislative Council. I did not go in with any documents. I referred them to all files in the office to guide them in the investigation.

“I’m aware they were being sponsored from Abeokuta, but they denied it. The bus that brought them into the Council Secretariat is from Abeokuta, it belongs to the State Government. I don’t have any issue with that.

“I told them to be thorough in their investigation because posterity will judge each and every one of us. I am not fighting for myself. I am doing this in the interest of Ijebu East Local Government.”

“Meanwhile, I got information now that after I left the place, the Leader of the House pushed a motion for impeachment. Five of the Councillors along with the Leader supported the motion.

“I told them this morning they were acting a script written by those in Abeokuta. All the documents about the allegations against me are in the office. But I know Mr. Governor is offended that we opened up to the public about how the Federal Allocation belonging to Ijebu East Local Government was being spent.

“I have done my duty as an Afenifere by letting our Leader know why we have not been able to do much since we got into office. The rest is for the court to decide.”

Trouble started for the embattled Chairman when he alleged that Governor Dapo Abiodun was heavily tampering with the Local Government allocation from the Federal Government. Since then, he has remained embattled.

Deeper Life Pastor Resigns Over Kumuyi’s Support For President Tinubu’s FG; Says Kumuyi Let The Church Down

0

By Charles Igbo

Pastor Ogunze Venitius Chinyerugo of the Deeper Life Church, 84 Nnobi Street, Anambra State, has resigned from office. Before his his resignation, the Pastor was incharge of a District.

He said he resigned in protest over the absolute support of Pastor William Kumuyi, the Founder and General Overseer of the Church for the All Progressives Congress, APC,  Federal Government led by President Bola Tinubu.

In his resignation letter dated August 23, 2023, addressed to the Regional Overseer, Deeper Life, Pastor Chinyerugo said resignation follows a viral video where Kumuyi veered into politics in support of the Tinubu Administration which the Pastor noted has brought untold hardship upon the people.

He noted: “I write this note with great burden, bearing in mind its far-reaching spiritual implications.

“I feel that our Father in the Lord and our General Superintendent, Dr WF Kumuyi, has made a costly mistake and there is no way for me to effectively convey my mind to him than resigning as the Pastor of the above District, effective from today, the 23rd of August, 2023.

“My decision was taken after watching the video, which I forwarded to you, where he advised Nigerians to support the Government and the Ministers, because, according to him, they will perform, especially going by their antecedents.

“Honestly, I was devastated and felt terrible, humiliated and disappointed after watching the clip. For the records, I became born-again on April 10, 1984, as an undergraduate under the Christian Union, and later in that year I joined Deeper Life, after months of searching for a Church that reflects the Bible. Why not? I could not have left the world only to fool myself and surrender myself again to be deceived. I have not been disappointed since I joined the Church.

“God has so graciously used the Pastor to mould my Christian life and, of course, the life of many others. He has also, by words and conduct, taught us to mind the Kingdom business and to refrain from dabbling into political matters. He had exemplified this teaching for several decades by steering clear of political controversies, until lately.

“Most debilitating was his visit in 2019 to the President of Nigeria then, Muhammadu Buhari, at a time when Nigerians, Christians, pagans, Muslims and atheists, were wishing and praying for him to exit. While Nigerians with their short memories are trying to forget that visit-blunder to such an insensitive leader, a tribal and religious bigot, our pastor has committed another terrible blunder.

“He has recommended this present administration, in which every detail about the administration is antithetical to the Pastor’s preaching. And this is while the Presidency is still subject to national and international judicial contests. As a mathematician, I wonder what mathematical principle he used to arrive at that conclusion because my elementary arithmetic taught me that zero multiplied by one trillion amounts to zero. So, on what moral principle would this administration fight corruption? On the past performances and quality of the ministers, I wonder if our pastor knows about Isa Bagudu and many of the former Governors.

“Sir, if I do not remove the speck in my very own eyes, then I will be one of the hordes of hypocrites marauding everywhere in Nigeria. I am one of those who vehemently criticise members of Catholic, Anglican and some other Pentecostal churches for not drawing the attention of their own leaders when they go wrong, hence my decision to resign. I am particularly let down by the demeaning comments in the social media space, and, unlike usual, I am silenced to defend him because the comments are correct! He has given the enemies of the Lord the opportunity they are looking for to talk down on him and, by extension, the Church.

“All through the election campaigns, he maintained a glorious and dignified silence, and we members of the church earned respect for that. I wonder about the need for this comment at this point in time.

“I wish this message reaches him, but considering that the office bureaucracy will likely make it impossible for it to get to him, I may have to pass it to him through social media in the next one or two weeks, unless he speaks to Nigerians.

“Thanks a lot for indulging my several irritations. I pray for heaven at last for all of us.

“Supporting our leaders presupposes that such leaders meet up with 2 Samuel 23:3, that is, ‘They that want to rule among men must be righteous and fearing God,’ which obviously means that they should not rig, kill and corner power by force, they should have a popular mandate to rule. Any other prayer reserved for such leaders without the above qualifications is that God should give us the courage to stand up against them like the people of Sri Lanka. Since an Ethiopian cannot change his colour, praying for such people to change and, maybe, become born-again at this point in time is unrealistic.

“However, since faith without works is dead, when we have done all that we are supposed to do and there’s nothing else left, then we should resort to prayer, since, with God, nothing shall be impossible.”

Adebayo Adelabu - Minister of Power

By Ayodele Oni

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has blamed the nationwide blackout experienced nationwide on Thursday on a fire outbreak.

There was widespread blackout across the country following the total collapse of Nigeria’s electricity grid early this morning.

It was gathered that the grid collapsed totally around 12:40 a.m., leading to the massive loss of supply to power distributors nationwide.

In a Facebook posts, the minister explained that a fire outbreak at Kainji/Jebba located in the North-central caused the blackout.

Adelabu said, “At 00:35Hrs this morning, a fire outbreak with explosion sound was observed on Kainji/Jebba 330kV line 2 (Cct K2J) blue phase CVT & Blue phase line Isolator of Kainji/Jebba 330kV line 1 was observed burning.

‘This led to sharp drops in frequency from 50.29Hz to 49.67 Hz at 0:35:06Hrs with Jebba generation loss of 356.63MW.

“Kainji started dropping load from 451.45 MW at 00:35:07Hrs to zero. At 00:41Hrs frequency dropped further from 49.37 Hz to 48.41Hz then resulted in system collapse of the grid.

“We are on top of the situation and speedy restoration is in progress. The fire has been fully arrested and over half of the connections are now up and the rest will be fully restored in no time.

“My sincere appreciation to those who responded or expressed concern via different channels and the team of Engineers for their prompt response to the situation and work done so far. Let’s get the restoration work completed as soon as possible.

“Delay in update was deliberate, so as not to cause panic and to also be able to update on progress of remedial actions taken so far.

“This is to ensure economic and security saboteurs don’t take advantage of every situation reported.”

Meanwhile, Eko Electricity Distribution Company in its X Account stated that Electricity supply has been restored hours after a nationwide blackout due to the collapse of the national grid on Thursday.

Disclosing this on its Twitter handle, now (X), Eko Electricity Distribution Company told its customers that electricity supply has been restored in the country.

PDP Board Of Trustees Alleges Plan By APC To Foist One Party On Nigerians

By Ayodele Oni

Members of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), which met on Thursday in Abuja have observed that hasty policies being foist on Nigerians by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has drastically increased level of poverty in the country.

The BoT, also, alleged plan by the ruling party to turn Nigeria to one party and vowed to resist such move.

The BoT expressed worry over the continued fall in the value of the Naira arising from the ill-implemented policies of the APC with attendant devastating negative effect on the economy resulting in agonizing high costs and unbearable pressure on families.

“The BoT laments that the APC is pushing Nigerians to the wall and worry that the level of poverty and anger in the polity over the suppressive rule of the APC is capable of snowballing into a serious crisis if not urgently addressed.

“The BoT observed that nation is currently in a precarious situation under the APC and Nigerians look unto the PDP for solution and direction at this time.

“The BoT assures Nigerians that despite the challenges, the PDP remains united, stronger and more determined to continue to lead to rescue our democracy and return our nation to the path of credible elections, Rule of Law, national cohesion and economic prosperity.”

Acting Chairman of the BoT, Senator Adolphus Wabara, stated this while reading a communique issued after the 75th meeting of the board.

He said, “The Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), at its 75th meeting thoroughly reviewed the State of affairs of the nation and the Party and resolved as follows:

“The BoT is resolved to take urgent steps to resists the current manifest desperation by the APC to turn Nigeria into a One-Party State.

“The BoT restates its rejection of the judgment of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) in upholding the declaration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the February 25, 2023 Presidential election, in spite of the evidence clearly pointing to the contrary.

“The BoT is also monitoring and studying the outcome of cases in various election courts with regards to their level of adherence and respect to the Rule of Law and evidence before such court.

“The BoT commended the PDP Presidential Candidate Atiku Abubakar, for following due process of the law in his quest to retrieve the Presidential Mandate freely given to him at the February 25, 2023 Presidential election.”

Wabara expressed the board’s confidence and courage of the Supreme Court to “ultimately and decisively right the wrongs and correct the manifest errors contained in the Judgment of the PEPC in the interest of the unity, stability and corporate existence of our Country.”

He equally expressed the board’s serious concerns over what he described as the excruciating hardship, worsening insecurity and general sense of apprehension and despondency across the country “occasioned by the hasty implementation of ill-planned policies of the overtly insensitive APC administration.”

Hon. Ndudi Elumelu

By Gideon Njoku

The Court of Appeal which sat in Abuja on Thursday, September 14, 2023, has stopped Ndudi Elumelu of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, from stepping into the 10th National Assembly.

In a ruling on an appeal filed by the Candidate of the Labour Party, Ngozi Okoli, the Apeallate Court set aside the ruling of the National and State House of Assembly Election Tribunal, in Asaba, Delta State, which sacked Okolie and declared Elumelu winner.

Okolie was declared winner of the February 25 Election by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. He was, however, sacked by the Tribunal in favour of Elumelu.

He appealed to a higher  Court and was, on Thursday, reinstated by the three-man Panel.

Elumelu was the Minority Leader in the 9th Assembly.

Details, later.
