“I believe that the APC candidate, Usman Ododo, will build on the solid foundation we have laid down for Kogi,” the Governor said.

He stressed that the All Progressives Congress, APC, Governorship Candidate at the upcoming Election in the State would record a landslide win.

Our unity is why APC  wins in Kogi and will continue to win.

In a paper titled; “Unity in a Multi–Ethnic, Multi-Religious Society, the Kogi Story” the state’s Commissioner for Information, Mr Kingsley Fanwo, said candidates should campaign on merit.

“Any candidate who campaigns on the basis of ethnic sentiments is incompetent.”

Speaking at the Seminar, President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Chris Isiguzo, tasked Journalists with responsible and ethical journalism.

In his paper, “ Off Season Elections, Journalists as Responsible Watchdogs”, Isiguzo said there was a need for journalists to ensure transparency, check all facts and verify all information in their reportage.

The NUJ president noted that off-season elections presented challenges and opportunities for journalists to fulfill their role as responsible watchdogs of society.

“I encourage all of us to approach the job with a sense of duty, knowing that the quality of our reporting can influence the future of our nation.”

Peter Obi’s Bond with Nsukka, the Charity Story

Peter Obi in Nsukka

By Ike Abonyi

On January 12, 2023, ahead of the February 25th election, the Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi visited the University town of Nsukka, in Enugu state for a Town Hall meeting. Obi had finished and was to sneak into a waiting helicopter to fly him to Enugu, the state capital for the day’s campaign. But to OBI’S shock thousands of youths lay arm bush waiting to see and touch him. Security operatives had a hectic challenge rescuing the Presidential candidate from the crowd of admirers. Even the helicopter pilot had to help in yanking him to safety.

After the incident, there was a conversation about the dramatic incident wondering why Obi was so loved by the people of Nsukka. Could it be because he was a student of the University in the town, University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN in the 80s when most of his current admirers were not even born or what?

But on an investigation, it’s being discovered that OBI’S long-time charity work in Nsukka is the undercurrent to the People’s emotional attachment.

Just as UNN is the biggest educational institution in Nsukka, Bishop Shanahan Hospital is the biggest health institution in the town. While UNN is owned by the government to keep getting steady funding, Bishop Shanahan Hospital is owned by the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka and has been struggling financially.

The School of Nursing of the Hospital even lost accreditation and the hospital was deteriorating because of the dearth of equipment and the needed infrastructure.

In 2013 Most Rev. Godfrey Igwebuike Onah took over as Bishop of Nsukka Diocese and began the process of rehabilitating the historic health institution. The Bishop found a helper in the former Governor of Anambra state, Obi who after listening to the pitiable story of the Bishop about the institution visited the school in 2021 and decided to help. Obi determined to return the School of Nursing to the lost glory promised to donate N100m to the Institution. He gave out N50m at a start.

Last week Obi was in Nsukka to bring a balance of N50m and promised to add another N50 bringing the sum to N150m

This assistance, as noted by the Institution’s Provost, Rev. Fr. Kevin Ndu, played a pivotal role in the institution’s improvements and in securing multiple accreditations from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

On presenting the additional cheque of  50 Million Naira yesterday,  Obi emphasized the paramount significance of the healthcare sector in any country. He clarified that Bishop Shanahan Specialist Hospital holds a central role as the primary healthcare facility in the Enugu North Senatorial District. He affirmed that bolstering this healthcare institution will contribute to enhanced healthcare services for the community.

Obi expressed his gratitude towards the Hospital’s Proprietor, Most Rev. Godfrey Onah, who is also the Catholic Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, as well as the dedicated Management of the Institution. He commended their outstanding efforts in ensuring the hospital’s ongoing mission of training competent healthcare professionals and providing excellent healthcare services to the community. He highlighted the significant role that the Church plays in societal development, emphasizing its contributions in various parts of the nation.

Obi emphasized the importance of government support for the church’s developmental initiatives, particularly in the fields of healthcare and education. Unfortunately, he noted that due to leadership failures in the country, the situation often reverses, with the government imposing taxes on some of these projects. During his tenure as the Governor of Anambra State, he took measures to ensure that no school or hospital affiliated with the church faced taxation. He aimed to provide encouragement and recognition for their significant contributions to societal development.

Obi expressed his gratitude to both past and present administrations of Enugu State for their substantial support in this project. He also extended his appreciation to the dedicated nurses and other healthcare providers, urging them to maintain their unwavering commitment to serving humanity. He emphasized the crucial role they play in the healthcare sector.

Further in his words: “Again, I pledge to continue to contribute to the human development in Nigeria through investment in health and education sectors. This is borne out of my strong desire to contribute to societal development. I am eager to see a better Nigeria and I am ready to build a New Nigeria that will be beneficial to all. By supporting healthcare facilities and investing aggressively in the health sector, we will give better lives to our people and develop into a better nation. This is our dream for the New Nigeria and we know it is possible.”

Expressing their gratitude for Obi’s financial and moral backing, Most Rev. Godfrey Onah, the Hospital’s Proprietor and Catholic Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, hailed Obi as a steadfast contributor to national development through investments in societal advancement.

“No matter the circumstances, Nigerians recognize your exceptional contributions. We deeply appreciate your visit and your unwavering support. Your generosity is not new to us; two years ago, you visited us and donated N100 million, and we knew it wasn’t your first time. You’ve consistently visited Nsukka, quietly extending your help to remote schools and hospitals without seeking praise. Your actions are driven by a genuine commitment to improving our society, and for that, we are truly grateful,” Onah remarked.

Delta State Allocates N78b For Federal Roads

To improve conditions of federal highways in Delta State, Federal Government and State government have entered into collaborative efforts, with the state government announcing an allocation of N78 billion to improve and maintain various federal roads within the State.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori disclosed this on Saturday during a meeting with the Minister of Niger Delta Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, in Asaba.

The Governor stated that “The Executive Council has approved over N78 billion for federal road projects, and we are interested in collaborating on this, irrespective of political party affiliations.

“I want to welcome and congratulate you on your appointment. I have received the Minister of Works, who also inspected the Benin to Warri and East-West roads. I’m set to receive the Minister for Sports to discuss youth sports matters.

“I trust that appointing someone from this region to the Ministry of Niger Delta Development will bring about positive changes.

“You’ve witnessed the challenges firsthand. This region contributes significantly to the country’s resources but often receives very little in return.

“This is your opportunity, and I urge you to do what is right. Shortcuts often lead to road failures, and those who engage in such practices are often from this region.

“Having served in the National Assembly and now transitioning to this role as Minister, I trust that you’re well aware of the challenges.

“Our communities are suffering from erosion, and the existence of the NDDC and the Ministry is to focus on the Niger Delta. You have the opportunity to prove your worth, Mr. Minister.”

Earlier, the Minister expressed his gratitude for the audience granted to him on a Saturday at Government House.

He added “If individuals like us, who have been with the PDP since its inception in 1998, can easily transition to the other side, I have no doubt that you may consider joining us in the APC.

“I extend warm greetings from President Bola Tinubu and would like to clarify that our purpose in being here is to inspect some of the projects initiated by the Ministry and the NDDC.

“The message is quite clear and singular: we believe in the need to collaborate closely with the state governors to ensure peace and foster development.

“The governor is the primary stakeholder in the state, and, having been in government for a significant period, you understand the issues and the intricacies of achieving peace.”

The Minister also explained that President Bola Tinubu’s placed priorities on food security, poverty reduction, access to capital, economic growth, job creation, inclusivity, fairness, rule of law, and the fight against corruption.

He emphasized the importance of achieving these goals for the betterment of Nigeria and assured that the Ministry is fully committed to pursuing these priorities to achieve the desired development.

He further noted that certain roads, such as Warri to Benin, Auchi to Ekpoma and Benin, and Calabar to Uyo, are in an unacceptable condition.

“Addressing these road issues requires collaborative efforts between the governors, the Ministry, and the NDDC through tripartite agreements.

“Mr. President’s focus is on results, and we are determined to do whatever it takes to achieve these results. I trust that this partnership would enhance the quality of transportation infrastructure and foster regional development.”

Gov Oyebanji Seeks Truce Between Farmers, Herdsmen, Constitutes Peace Committee

In the wake of renewed hostility between farmers and herdsmen in Ekiti state,  Governor Biodun Oyebanji, has reconstituted the state’s Farmers/Herders Peace Committee consisting of some critical stakeholders.

The move is part of efforts of the state government to mitigate clashes between farmers and herders and ensure greater level of productivity in crop and livestock agriculture.

Speaking during the Inauguration of the committee at the Governor’s Office in Ado Ekiti, Governor Oyebanji said the initiative would lead to the transformation of the agricultural sector and boost food security in Ekiti state.

The Governor recalled that the committee was first constituted during the last administration in response to the need for the state to have a mechanism for resolution of incessant conflicts between farmers and herders, adding that Ekiti State is the first to put in place an effective conflict resolution mechanism in the entire south west geo-political zone.

This, according to him, has helped to keep farmers/herders crisis at a very low ebb compared to other states in different parts of the country.

The Governor pointed out that the state government, in its drive to boost the economy and create employment opportunities for the people has attracted private investors to develop the agricultural sub-sector of the state.

To enhance this, the need to reconstitute the committee in order to pave way for a conducive business environment and reposition it for a more defined direction.

Governor Oyebanji, however said there were still reports about farm destruction, farmland degradation, water pollution, farm grazing and physical attacks on the farms among others which invariably were not only potential causes of violent crisis, but a threat to peace and food security in the state.

“We also had to deal with kidnappings many of which herders were suspected or indeed arrested as culprits. This trend has to be reversed so as not to create an atmosphere of chaos, vengeance, retribution and lawlessness, hence, the need to reconstitute this committee in order to reposition it for a more defined direction in response to the urgent reality of today.

“For fairness and equity, all interested stakeholders are included in the committee including cattle-breeders, herdsmen, farmers, security out fits, drivers’ unions, market women, traditional rulers, youths and others.

“It is our responsibility to sustain the confidence of our Agricultural business owners and other stakeholders that their investments are secured in Ekiti.

“Let me assure all the citizens that the committee, which is headed by the special Adviser on Security Matters, Retired Brigadier General Ebenezer Ogundana and other eminent personalities will be just and proactive in their conflict resolution assignments.”

The Governor added that the various crises between farmers and herders as well as other crimes in communities posed great threats to peace and food security in the state, urging the committee members to work in synergy with all stakeholders to ensure their cooperation.

He assured that Amotekun and Anti grazing corps in the state would be further strengthened to work with other security outfits for collaboration and effectiveness, most especially in the rural areas.

All relevant stakeholders including cattle breeders, herdsmen, farmers, security outfits, drivers unions, market women, traditional rulers, youths, among others are duly represented in the committee to ensure fairness and equity.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Ebenezer Boluwade, who expressed his appreciation to Governor Oyebanji for prioritizing issues concerning farmers, said the committee would facilitate the present administration shared prosperity agenda.

Adebola Akin-Bright

The Lagos State House of Assembly has mandated the Chairman of the Ad-hoc Committee, Hon. Noheem Adams to investigate the circumstances that led to the disappearance of Adebola Akin-Bright’s small intestine.

It was revealed that the doctor who performed surgery twice on the boy is, allegedly, not a qualified surgeon.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, during plenary on Thursday, directed the Clerk of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, to write to the State Police Command for the arrest of Dr. Abayomi Baiyewu of Obitoks Hospital in the Alimosho area of Lagos.

Adebola died on Tuesday shortly after the House called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to further assist him seek treatment abroad.

While thanking Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his effort at the period the boy was being treated at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Speaker Obasa directed that a letter conveying the condolence message of the House be sent to the family.

Obasa further asked the Committee to look into other grey areas including inviting officials of the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) which has the law-backed responsibility to monitor private hospitals operating in the State.

He further asked the Committee to review the extant law so as to know if it should be amended just as he said private hospitals can be made to always report their activities to the government at all times.

Formally announcing Adebola’s death, Hon. Adams said the boy’s case was disheartening. He said when the committee visited him on Tuesday, he still spoke with the lawmakers.

He, however, said during investigation, the committee learnt from Dr. Baiyewu that he is not a surgeon but only relied on his experience as a Medical Doctor.

He also said Baiyewu, whose testimonies were recorded, told the Committee that he did not carry out any medical examination on the boy before the first surgery which he did himself adding that he only relied on the report from a hospital the patient was first taken to.

Hon. Adams said after Dr. Baiyewu did the first surgery, the boy continued to complain about stomach pain and was taken back to Obitoks Hospital where Baiyewu carried out another round of surgery by himself.

Following more complications, Hon. Noheem said the boy was taken to LASUTH where it was confirmed that part of his intestine was missing.

The Lawmaker said as a Doctor, Baiyewu should have taken the excised part of the boy’s body to a pathological department for test, but that “Dr. Baiyewu told the committee that the body parts were mistakenly discarded,” and that the doctor had planned to do a third surgery before the boy was taken to LASUTH.

After Hon. Adams submission, the House commiserated with the bereaved family with Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda calling for the sealing of the hospital.

Another member of the committee, Hon. Lawal Aina, told his colleagues it was a pitiable sight when the committee visited Adebola at the hospital.

He added that upon interrogation, it was discovered that Dr. Baiyewu proved not to have been a certified surgeon.

Some of the lawmakers who spoke on the issue, suggested that a formal complaint be made against Dr. Baiyewu to the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria for action while others urged stricter monitoring of medical doctors and hospitals.

Tinubu’s Desperation To Hide Chicago Varsity Records Embarrassing To Nigerians –Timi Frank

0

By Akinwale Kasali

Timi Frank, Social Commentator and former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, on Friday urged President Bola Tinubu to stop embarrassing Nigerians by his desperate bid to frustrate the release of his academic records from the Chicago State University, CSU.

Frank in a statement in Abuja wondered what President Tinubu has got to hide that prompted him to hurriedly appeal the judgement of a US Magistrate Court that ordered CSU to release his academic records.

Tinubu, according to a report by Peoples Gazette, had pleaded before a United States Judge to save him from suffering “severe and irreparable damage” by placing an emergency hold on a recent Court order for his university records to be released.

The President through his lawyer claimed that the damage he would suffer would be impossible to mitigate if the order directing the release of his academic records to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar is not delayed for possible vacation.

According to the report, “Severe and irreparable harm will be done to Bola Tinubu if the records are released,” Tinubu’s lawyer had argued at an emergency appeal before Judge Nancy Maldonado of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago.

“If the records are released, harm will be done and cannot be taken back to the bottle,” Tinubu’s lawyer added.

“If you know you have clean academic records why are you fighting to stop their being released?

“What ‘severe and irreparable harm’ will you suffer if the records are released?” Frank queried.

He insisted that due to Tinubu’s desperate acts in seeking to conceal his academic records and other legal issues surrounding his persona, most world leaders are now avoiding him and this has hampered his administration’s much publicized investments drive abroad.

“For instance, his much trumpeted proposed meeting with American President Joe Biden during the United Nations General Assembly in New York was silently cancelled with no explanations from either Tinubu or Biden.

“However, we have it on good authority that Biden was warned by the US intelligence community to avoid such a meeting.

“Besides, Tinubu claimed to have gotten Untied Arab Emirates (Dubai) authorities to lift visa restrictions on Nigerians but this has since been proven to be a lie.”

He called on Nigerians to own the fight to ensure that the President has authentic academic records and not to leave the efforts to an individual due to potential political and diplomatic damage it can do to Nigeria if glossed over.

Frank said: “This fight should not be for Atiku Abubakar alone. Nigerians must rise up and demand to know the academic records of their President.

“Tinubu’s desperate attempt to buy time with his recent appeal is a huge embarrassment to Nigerians both at home and in diaspora.  Why does the court ordered release of Tinubu’s academic records appear like a matter of life and death to the President?

“Tinubu, please stop embarrassing Nigerians through this do or die attempt to stop your academic records from being released. Nigerians are eager to know who their President really is.

“The more you fight to conceal your academic records, the more you damage the image of the country and its ability to attract investors who want to do business with genuine and trustworthy partners and not those believed to have skeletons in their cupboards.

“Are Nigerians not entitled to know the authentic academic qualifications of their President?”

He called on the United States Of America Government and its institutions to transparently adjudicate on this matter in the interest of Nigeria and not that of one man.

Frank stated that his demand is that the Chicago Court urgently hears this appeal and makes its findings known without compromising the integrity of the American Court system.

Rescue Operation Begins As Troops Pursue Abductors Of Female Varsity Students In Zamfara

Rescue operation to free abducted students of the Federal University Zamfara state has commenced as Operatives of the Joint Task Force Operation Hadarin Daji (OPHD) intercepted the abductors of the female students.

Suspected bandits reportedly invaded the hostels of the Federal University, Gusau (FUG) early Friday and kidnapped 23 students mainly females.

It was gathered that the troops of the OPHD that pursued the kidnappers traced them into a thick forest and engaged them in a gun duel supported by air components of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).

Sources within the military said, so far six among the abducted students were rescued, scores of the Bandits killed and recovered rifles, motorcycles and other items.

The rescue operation was triggered following the abduction of the students from their rented hostels at Sabon gida village in Gusau.

Earlier, the Commander 1 Brigade Nigerian Army Gusau, Brig Gen S Ahmed who is also the Commander of the Operation Hadarin Daji incharge of Zamfara and Kebbi states, was said to have  led troops who  advanced toward the Bandits exit route.

Residents of villages around the forest said fighter jets are currently hovering around the forest and that they were hearing heavy sounds of either guns of explosives indicating a serious fire exchange.

Ondo Assembly Should Be Cautious In Petition Against Deputy Governor – Indigenes In Diaspora

Lucky Aiyedatiwa - Deputy Governor of Ondo State

By Ayodele Oni

More reactions continue to trail allegations of misconduct against Ondo State Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, as some indigenes of the State in diaspora described the allegation as mere politics ahead 2024 governorship election in the state taken too far.

In an open letter to Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and signed on their behalf by Chris Okunnuwa, they advised the House of Assembly and Governor Akeredolu to look beyond the surface of the petition and allow justice to prevail.

The open letter, copy of which was sent to the Assembly states: “As the 2024 Gubernatorial Election in Ondo State draws nearer the cloud gathering around Aiyedatiwa, a man once thought to be favoured by you his principal, for his loyalty becomes heavier and now the wolfs are ready to gather.

“It is however good to know you are keeping your cards close to your chest and not giving anything away on who get your blessing to be the flag bearer of the ruling part, APC in next year’s gubernatorial election.

“In respective of any individual or group’s political permutations on who succeeds you in Alagbaka, it’s no brainer that what the state needs at this time is effective governance, all rounder stability and good leadership from you.

“These have really been lacking since you took ill, and made worst by political backbiting that hamstrung the Deputy Governor from carrying out his constitutional duties even after you vested power on him to do so in your absence.

“The latest sinister move which has culminated in the ODHA’s resolve to petition Aiyedatiwa over alleged gross misconduct is just one of many plots against the Deputy Governor in few months.

“Similar attempts by the cabals and their collaborators to desperately throw him under the bus with frivolous claims hinged on domestic abuse and lack of loyalty were futile in the past months.

“One of the is the latest allegation against Aiyedatiwa on gross misconduct bordering on abuse of office with unsubstantiated claim of approving the sum of N300 million to be sourced from state palliative fund to purchase a bulletproof SUV for his personal use while you were away on medical leave in Germany.

“While it is difficult to fully vouch for any human due to our imperfections, my experience with the Deputy Governor and his antecedents showed these allegations could yet be another attempt to call a dog a bad name just to hang it.

“Also the allegation of disloyalty brought up against him is really laughable and petty  at best, given the fact that he is well-known to be respective, fully submissive and careful not to operate without your approval.

“He is never seen to try to outshine you, his boss. Now, I do not know if you and your family have genuine reason(s) to feel aggrieved by the actions or inaction of the DGov while you were said to be critically ill.

“After all, if members of your family wield so much influence in the state affairs as widely claimed, then it won’t be out of place to posit that Aiyedatiwa’s emergence as Deputy Governor in the first place was not without their blessing.

“So, if he is not enjoying a good relationship with of your family at the moment, it could mean there are truly issues that need to be resolved or clarified between two families or offices, but likely this has little or nothing to do with gross misconduct or abuse of office.

“Hence, the state legislative arm of government under the leadership of Rt. Hon Olamide Oladiji, need tread with caution so as not to be used as pawn in any game to settle political score or personal vendetta.

“Instead the ODHA should try everything possible to uphold the tenets of democracy and not to amplify any mistake the key players of the Exco are making at this time which could lead to turmoil and instability in the state. After all the different arms of governments are to provide check and balance for one another.”
