Impeachment: Journalist to Gov Akeredolu: ‘Forgive Disloyalty; Eschew Vengeance’

0

By Ike Abonyi

Never have I met Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. Neither have I known the not-so-lucky Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa one-on-one.  I have always admired the former for his comportment in and out of office.

As political reporters, we have followed his trajectory as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, President of the Nigerian Bar Association, and now state chief executive. Therefore, we, as all lovers of humanity, were hit by the sad news of his ill health.

When he wrote the state parliament that he was going on medical vacation, I felt for him and prayed that he make it back to his gubernatorial saddle. As the weeks rolled into months and he didn’t return, my apprehension heightened. Eventually, the merciful God made it possible for him to return to work for the remainder of his eight-year tenure.

However, the news I have been reading since his return is not what I expect from someone rescued from the jaws of death.  The rumour mill had him dead several times.

On Sunday, September 17, 2023, all the readings in the Catholic Church, where I worship, talked lavishly about forgiveness. The most difficult request from God to Christians is forgiveness, Apostle Peter asked how many times we could allow an offender scot-free. Seven times? Jesus said, “I didn’t say seven times, but seventy times seven”…meaning as long as the offender trespasses and you are not consumed by it. Jesus further says we must pray for our enemies and present the second cheek whenever we are slapped.

Your Excellency, as the priest brought out all these instances to buttress his homily on forgiveness, the three readings from the Old Testament to the New, which I recommend as you ready to exact the pound of the disloyal deputy governor’s flesh.

Rotimi Akeredolu
Governor Rotimi Akeredolu

Here’s the first reading from the Book of Sirach, chapter 27:30 to Chapter 28:7:

“Anger and wrath, these also are abominations, and the sinful man will possess them. He that takes vengeance will suffer vengeance from the Lord, and he will firmly establish his sins. Forgive your neighbour for the wrong he has done, and then your sins will be pardoned when you pray. Does a man harbour anger against another, and yet seek healing from the Lord? Does he have no mercy towards a man like himself, and yet pray for his own sins? If he, being flesh, maintains wrath, will he then seek forgiveness from God? Who will make an excuse for his sins? Remember the end of your life, cease from enmity, remember destruction and death, and be true to the commandments.  Remember the commandments, and do not be angry with your neighbour; remember the covenant of the Most High, and overlook ignorance.”

The second scripture, taken from St. Paul’s letter to the Romans Chapter 14:7-19 reads:

“Brethren: None of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end, Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.”

Then comes the gospel of the day from Matthew Chapter 18: 21 to 35: “At that time: Peter came up and said to Jesus, ‘Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?'” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times but seventy times seven. Therefore, the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the reckoning, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents; and as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ And out of pity for him, the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt.

“But that same servant, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat he said, ‘Pay what you owe.’ So his fellow servant fell and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you. ’He refused and went and put him in prison till he could pay the debt.

“When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. Then his lord summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me; and should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ And in anger, his lord delivered him to the jailers, till he should pay all his debt. So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”

Even the Responsorial Psalm of the day from Psalm 103 is copiously related, making the beauty of the Catholic teaching:

“Bless the Lord, O my soul,

And all within me, his holy name.

Bless the Lord, O my soul,

And never forget all his benefits.

It is the Lord who forgives all your sins, who heals every one of your ills, who redeems your life from the grave, who crowns you with mercy and compassion.

He will not always find fault; nor persist in his anger forever.

He does not treat us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our faults.

For as the heavens are high above the earth, so strong is his mercy for those who fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far from us does he remove our transgressions?

After hearing this homily and with Akeredolu’s vengeance in my mind, my spirit moved me to pen down this article for the Governor’s attention.

If the Governor had died, the lucky(?) Deputy Governor would have been sworn in as a replacement and the parliament would have to live with it. Indeed, God rules in the affairs of men. So, the dream did not come true.

Your Excellency, since God made you a Governor, saved your life, and made you pick this man above all Ondo citizens as your running mate, how is removing him because he disappointed you [mere mortal] and God going to help your spirituality as a huge beneficiary of God’s grace?

I know that politicians are very unforgiving. Looking back at all your successes in life, retaining this man will not diminish your relationship with your generous creator. Instead, letting the Deputy Governor be will enhance it in line with the above-cited scriptures.

All those pushing you to deal with Lucky and are already lobbying to replace him would have done the same thing so long as they are human beings and politicians. If I were you, I would ask myself if God would be glad. If God had looked at my sins and shortcomings would he have allowed me to return alive?

Lucky Aiyedatiwa
Lucky Aiyedatiwa, deputy governor, Ondo State

Your Excellency, if only you can hear the silent voice, you will hear the truth your aides are not telling you. Why not leave this man with a pang of conscience, given God’s mercies on you?

By coming back alive, the disloyal Deputy must be battling with his conscience and you are freeing him before God by being unforgiving. I can assure you that if you punish him with impeachment, God may not be interested in his crime any longer.

Your Excellency, I hear that your middle name is Odunayo [Yoruba for “joyous year”], why not live up to your name, stopping anything that will bring sadness in an otherwise joyous year? Your death–God forbid–would have brought unhappiness to Ondo State, but God did not will so. Who are you to bring sadness upon your domain? I pray to God to help you digest and forgive and leave vengeance for God who says “Vengeance is mine.”

To sponsors and “sponsors” of Lucky, sheath your swords. God perfects all things in his own time.

Impeachment: No Court Can Stop Our Proceeding On Deputy Governor – Ondo Assembly Speaker

0

By Ayodele Oni

Ondo State House of Assembly has said it will not be deterred by an interlocutory injunction by an Abuja court halting the impeachment process of the state deputy governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja had, on Tuesday, restrained the Assembly from proceeding on the impeachment process pending determination of the substantive suit.

A statement, signed by the Assembly’s Speaker, Oladiji Olamide, pointed out that the House expected the Deputy Governor to wait to be served with the notice, rather than rushing to Court.

“The House is shocked that rather than wait to be served with notice of the allegation of gross misconduct, and react to same as required by the Constitution, the Deputy Governor has been running from pillar to post and filing multiply suits in both at the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court and the Ondo State High Courts in a bid to stop the legislative process.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the House is fully conscious of Section 188 (10) of the Constitution which clearly states that “No proceedings or determination of the panel or of the House of Assembly or any matter relating to such proceedings or determination shall be entertained or questioned in any Court.

“In the case of Abaribe V. Abia State House of Assembly (2022) 14 NWLR (Pt. 788) 466, the Court of Appeal emphatically stated that it was wrong for the Appellant to jump the gun by rushing to the Court to stop his impeachment process on the ground of alleged breach of fair hearing when the panel to investigate and hear him had not even been constituted.

“The Court of Appeal then restated that by the provision of Section 188 (10) of the Constitution, no court has the jurisdiction at that stage to interfere in the legislative proceedings for impeachment.

“The Supreme Court has repeatedly restated that the Court can only intervene when the procedures for impeachment have been breached.

“In this case however, the Deputy Governor rushed to court even before the notice of impeachment was served on him. For the records, no procedures have been breached in any way.

“In view of these, the House has directed its team of Lawyers to investigate the purported injunction secured by the Deputy Governor and report any judicial officer who might have abused his office in granting the unconstitutional ex-parte injunction to the appropriate institution for necessary disciplinary action.

“The House wishes to assure the general public that it would proceed with the legislative process to a logical conclusion.

“But in doing so, will strictly follow the Constitutional procedures. The House will not abdicate or compromise its sacred constitutional duty to hold elected public officers accountable, particularly where there are prima facie serious allegations of corruption and abuse of power levelled against the Deputy Governor in this case.”

Afenifere Backs Obi Over Appeal Against PEPC Judgement, Flays Profligacy Of Tinubu Government

By Ayodele Oni

Factional Afenifere, led by Pa Ayo Adebanjo, has affirmed that it remains in support of the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, (LP) in his bid to challenge illegality in February election.

The Presidential Election Petition Committee had dismissed petitions filed by Obi anf other political parties to challenge victory of President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Rising from its monthly meeting at Isanya Ogbo Ogun state on Tuesday, the Yoruba group states that “Afenifere remains convinced and undeterred on the just principles with which we agreed to support Mr. Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party.

“In line with our disagreement with the judgment of the Court of Appeal on the 2023 elections, we support a further appeal to the Supreme Court in the interest of the nation.

“Afenifere cannot reconcile with such pronouncements that the INEC is at liberty to return to the manual collation of election results and all the primitive electoral brigandage associated.

“Neither is it true with our political structure that Nigeria is now a 37-state federation as the Court of Appeal erroneously pronounced.

“Afenifere remains resolved that no person or group of persons shall hold the reins of power except in the proven interest of a fair, equitable, inclusive and thus united Nigeria in their peaceful, prosperous and harmonious diversity.”

In a communique released to journalists in Akure, Ondo state by secretary of the group, Sola Ebiseni, the group bemoaned state of the nation, which has led to the decision of the organized labour to go on strike saying the removal of oil subsidy and other economic policies hastily pronounced without planning for the collateral effects, the Nigerian masses have been abysmally pauperized Nigerians.

‘In reacting and calling for mass action in this regard, the NLC is living to its historic responsibility.

“Afenifere restates its  commitment to welfare economics as opposed to the neo-liberal economic policies currently being pushed. Government needs to open up to Nigerians and those in power come down from their ostentatious life styles.

“From the humongous number of 50 Ministers with intractable number of aides, it is unacceptable that the people are being called upon to make further sacrifices.   Government is called upon to look into the plight of Nigerians and listen to the NLC to avert the looming strikes in the interests of the already prostate economy.

On intervention of ECOWAS in Niger Republic military putsch, the group commended Nigerians for standing against military action in that country.

“While Afenifere reiterates its  abhorrence to any undemocratic access to power either through the barrels of the gun or electoral brigandage, the principles of the total emancipation of the African continent is in tandem with the principles of Afenifere.”

By Akinwale Kasali

Wale Adedayo, the impeached Chairman of Ijebu East Local Government Area in Ogun State has been granted bail by Magistrate A.K Araba of the Magistrate Court in Isabo, Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital.

The Ogun State Police Command had arraigned Adedayo before the Court following the allegations of mismanagement and abuse of power leveled against him by seven councillors from the LG leading to his suspension and later expulsion.

In the ruling, Magistrate Araba admitted Adedayo to bail in the sum of N2 million and two ‘responsible and reliable sureties’ in like sum.

The Magistrate stated that the said sureties must be residents within the jurisdiction of the court and must possess landed property with tax clearance.

He, however, ordered his remand at Ibara Correctional facility, Abeokuta, pending perfection of the bail conditions, while adjourning the case till October 20, 2023 for trial.

It would be recalled that the genesis of Adedayo’s problem was when he accused the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun of diverting statutory Federal allocations of all the 20 LGs in the state.

He went further to petition the anti graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), seeking Abiodun’s probe on the allegations.

Following his expulsion from office, he was grilled by the Department of State Security, DSS, of the Ogun State Police Command, leading to his impeachment on September 14th, 2023.

Operatives of the Police Command arrested him on Monday at Ijebu-Ife and moved him to the Police headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.

He was arraigned on a two-count charge before a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, following a petition written by the state government on Tuesday.

The petition titled “Petition against Wale Adedayo’s deliberate circulation of falsehood, false report to government, threat to life and interference with the exercise of executive function” was signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi.

The two-count charge read “That you Hon. Wale Adedayo ‘m’ on the 27th August 2023 at Abeokuta in the Abeokuta Magisterial District did unlawfully publish the circular to the public, a letter addressed to the former Governor of Ogun State and Elder Stateman, Aremo Olusegun Osoba ‘m’ in which you accused the present Governor of Ogun State: Prince Dapo Abiodun ‘m’ of hijacking Local Government funds which you knew was a false allegation and likely to cause fear and alarm to the public or to disturb the public peace, knowing or having reason to believe that such statement is a rumour and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 59(1) of Criminal Code laws of Ogun State, 2006.

“That you Hon. Wale Adedayo ‘m’ on the same date and place in the aforesaid Magisterial District did unlawfully publish a circular to the public, a letter addressed to the former Governor of Ogun State and Elder Stateman, Aremo Olusegun Osoba ‘m’ in which you accused the present Governor of Ogun State; Prince Dapo Abiodun ‘m’ of hijacking Local Government funds (ten per cent (10%) of the State Internally Generated Revenue which the Constitution stipulate should go to the Local Government(s) since May 2019 which you knew was a false allegation and likely to injure the reputation of the Governor by exposing him to hatred, contempt or ridicule or to damage him in the discharge of his office and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 375 of Criminal Code laws of Ogun State, 2006.”

The Defendant’s Counsel, Kayode Akinsola, applied for the bail of the accused person, saying the offences allegedly committed are bailable.

The Prosecutor, Inspector Olaide Rawlings did not object to the bail application.

Subsidy Withdrawal: NLC, TUC Fix October 3 For Commencement Of Strike

NLC Protest

By Ayodele Oni

The Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress, (TUC) have agreed to begin another round of national strike as from October, 3.

The Unions vowed to ground activities nationwide, over what they tagged as the “failure” of government to successfully implement policies to alleviate the sufferings of Nigerians following the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit.

NLC national president, Joe Ajaero, during a virtual National Executive Council meeting which was held on Zoom, Tuesday told members of NEC that a meeting was held with the officials of the TUC to deliberate on ways forward.

Ajaero noted that it was resolved that the two centres work together to make their stance known to the government.

A source who was present at the meeting noted that some members of the NLC initially objected to the development of the NLC working together with the TUC.

“Initially some members did not want us to work with the TUC but as of now, we don’t have a choice. The government has not been proactive. So it is going to be a definite action this time around.”

NLC first observed a two-day nationwide warning strike on September 5 and 6 to show its readiness for the indefinite strike later in the month.

Among other things, the NLC and the TUC are asking for wage awards, implementation of palliatives, tax exemptions and allowances to public sector workers and a review of the minimum wage.

President Bola Tinubu had on June 19 set up the Presidential Steering Committee and various sub-committees to discuss the framework to be adopted on the palliatives.

Though Government made a commitment to restructure the framework for engagement with organized Labour on palliatives, the eight-week timeframe set for the conclusion of the process expired in August with no action taken.

Relief For Ondo Deputy Governor, Aiyedatiwa As Abuja Court Halts Impeachment Proceedings

Lucky Aiyedatiwa

By Ayodele Oni

While still awaiting hearing date on the suit he filed on Monday at the Akure High Court over his planned impeachment, deputy governor of Ondo state, Lucky Aiyedatiwa got a relief from the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday.

The Court restrained the Ondo state House of Assembly from impeaching the Deputy Governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, over alleged gross misconduct.

Justice Emeka Nwite, in a ruling shortly after Aiyedatiwa’s counsel, Kayode Adewusi, moved the ex-parte motion to the effect, also restrained Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu from nominating a new deputy governor and forwarded the same to the lawmakers for approval pending the hearing and determination of the substantive matter.

Justice Nwite held that after listening to Adewusi, he was of the view that the interest of justice would be met by granting the application. “Therefore, the application of the applicant succeeds.”

A  News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report stated that the embattled deputy governor had, in a motion on notice marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1294/2023, sued the Inspector-General (I-G) of Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), Gov. Akeredoku, Speaker of the House of Assembly, Chief Judge of Ondo State and the House of Assembly as 1st to 6th respondents respectively.

In the application dated and filed by Mr Adelanke Akinrata on Sept. 21, Aiyedatiwa sought four reliefs.

The judge further made an order of interim injunction restraining Akeredolu, his servants, or privies from harassing, intimidating, embarrassing, and preventing Aiyedatiwa in carrying out the functions of his office as deputy governor of Ondo State.

Justice Nwite, who granted all the reliefs adjourned the matter until Oct. 9 for hearing.

Veteran Nollywood Actor, ‘Suara’ Is Dead

Yemi Adeyemi - Suara

By Akinwale Kasali

This is not the best of times for the Nation’s Creative Industry, popularly known as Nollywood. It has, once again, lost one of its veteran and popular Actors, Yemi Adeyemi.

The Late Adeyemi was best known for his role in one of Wale Adenuga’s Production Series, Super Story, where he played the cast of Suara.

The interpretation of his role in the sitcom made him become a household name.

His demise has come as a shock to his theming fans, admirers and family.

Breaking the news of his demise was notable theatre practitioner, academic and critic, Dr. Shaibu Husseini, who announced his death on late Monday night via his social media platform.

Husseini noted that Chief Adeyemi passed away on Sunday, September 24, 2023.

“I have been reliably informed that veteran actor Chief Yemi Adeyemi aka Suara has transited.

“Popular as Suara, Chief Adeyemi rode to prominence playing Suara in the long rested ‘Oh Father, Oh Daughter’ series of the hugely popular Super Story stories by Wale Adenuga Productions.

“Baba Suara as some of us his younger colleagues simply called him, reportedly “acted out” this Sunday. Journey well Baba Suara. You will be sorely missed. Odigba Sir. Journey Well…..”

In the Production Series where he acted as Suara, he was paired with veteran sizzling actress, Sola Sobowale for her role as Toyin Tomato.

In the Sitcom, Suara was having an extra marital affair with Toyin Tomato till he left his House and family and moved in with his concubine, though he later regretted his action and retraced his steps like the prodigal Son after losing everything he worked and Laboured for.

Though, the cause of the actor’s death is yet to be announced by family member.

He will be sorely missed by colleagues, friends, families and well wishers, mostly for his distinct interpret of roles.

Ondo Assembly Gathers Fresh Allegations Against Deputy Governor

Lucky Aiyedatiwa - Deputy Governor of Ondo State

By Ayodele Oni

Following public outcry over the allegation of a-N300 million request for an SUV vehicle, made against the Deputy Governor of Ondo state, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the Assembly has now withdrawn the charge.

In the notice containing the allegations served on the embattled Deputy governor on Monday, the N300 million request has been removed and substituted with gross misconduct.

Aiyedatiwa, had earlier on Monday  denied receiving any notice since the announcement by the House last week. The leadership of the Assembly confirmed that the notice would get to him on Monday.

The notice, served on the Deputy Governor through one of the civil servants in his office, omitted the allegation of purchase of N300m armoured SUV for his convoy from palliatives funds.

The lawmakers had been embarrassingly criticized by members of the public on the claim.

The Spokesman of the House of Assembly, Hon. Olatunji Oshati, had appeared on Channels Television last week, where he struggled to defend the armoured SUV allegation, while a Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Duties, Dr. Doyin Odebowale, had gone on various radio and television stations to emphasize same baseless allegation.

According to some people, the allegation of armoured SUV purchase from palliatives funds was aimed at destroying the reputation of the Deputy Governor but after realizing it was a hard sell, they decided to abandon it and that may have accounted for why they couldn’t serve the notice since last week.

The notice, which does not mention anything about armoured SUV or palliatives funds, now contains 14 offences levelled against the Deputy Governor.

These include operation of departments under his office, alleged media attacks on the Governor, holding political meetings, dividing the cabinet, attempting to impeach the Governor and assaulting his wife on June 4, 2023 when the woman was not even in the country.

Aiyedatiwa has gone to Court to halt the impeachment move by the Assembly through his Counsel, Ebun Adegboruwa, SAN.

Impeachment: Save Ondo From Crisis, Deputy Governor’s Kinsmen Write Gov Akeredolu’s Monarch

0
Lucky Aiyedatiwa and Rotimi Akeredolu

By Ayodele Oni

Ilaje, the kinsmen of the embattled Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has warned that a repeat of the 1983 political crisis in old Ondo state is imminent with the planned impeachment of the Deputy Governor.

In a letter to the Traditional Rulers of Owo, country home of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, Olowo, Oba Ajibade Ogunoye, the Ilaje people urged the monarch to wade into the planned removal by the state assembly.

The letter reads : “Our decision to write to you, our royal Father and a revered Monarch in Yorubaland, is to the intent that appropriate reconciliatory actions might be taken before the ticking bomb is detonated with its consequent devastating destruction.

“Your Majesty may recall that when Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu was away on medical leave, the “cabal” held the Acting Governor, Lucky Ayedatiwa and the entire governance architecture of the State by the jugular and by extension, held the entire State to ransome because of their inordinate ambitions.

“In all these, the Acting Governor remained unperturbed. But in a twist of event, we are surprised that the incurably baised legislators, who could not contemplate moving motion for the impeachment of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on account of his angling health challenges are now engulfed in this unparliamentary travesty that will soil their existence and memories even long after their passage from the earth.

“Their ill-motivated plot to impeach the Deputy Governor, Lucky Ayedatiwa is an unpopular and unpatriotic venture which does not attract the blessing nor have the backing of the good people of Ondo State.”

The letter, signed by Prince olorungbonju Edamisan and Princess Iretiola Ademitigha adds “And it is rather unfortunate that selfish politicians are exploiting the health of Governor Akeredolu to create imaginary rift between him and his Deputy.

“We never wanted to read ethnic coloration or weave ethno-tribal sentiments around the matter until it began to crystalize to us that the impeachment is not just a war against Lucky Ayedatiwa but a pre-meditated vendetta against the entire Ilaje nation.

“It is part of a subtle ploy aimed at depriving us the opportunity of producing the next Governor of the State.

“Ilaje have served other governors from other parts of the State with utmost respect and unflinching loyalty, despite being the treasure mines that produce about 80% of the revenues from whence the state derive the economic wealth with which she cater for other sections of the Sunshine State to the exclusion of Ilaje local government where the revenues are being mainly generated.

“However, if Governor Akeredolu SAN fails to prevail on those who are exploiting the political atmosphere against the Deputy Governor, there would be no other interpretation read to the matter than to deduce that Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu’s administration has declared war against Ilaje nation.

“And in response, we shall not hesitate to prove that we are not cowards that will run into hiding, as every appropriate actions will be taken to defend ourselves.

“As law abiding citizens, we believe in peaceful co-existence but not to the extent of having our fundamental human rights being violated as in the case of witnessing this gang-up against our brother and bonafide citizen of Ondo State, Lucky Ayedatiwa, in flagrant disregard for the cooperation that hitherto exists between the peoples of Owo and Ilaje.

“Your Majesty, the age-long cordial relationship and mutual understanding that have existed between the people of Owo and the people of Ilaje are currently being tried and tested in the furnace of affliction at the instance of this political brouhaha, and the historical memories these events would create is largely dependent on how it is being managed, resolved or otherwise escalated.

“The wealth of experience and sound wisdom that the great Olowo of Owo throne is renowned for assuage our fears, knowing that your prompt intervention and royal fatherly role will quickly extinguish the flames that have been ignited by these political undercurrents.”
