As the World marks the International Day of the Girl- child, the Wife of Ondo State Governor, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has catalogued areas the present administration impacted on girl-child.

Anyanwu-Akeredolu in a statement to commemorate the day, lauded the progress made in empowering and protecting the rights of the girl child in the state.

Recognized worldwide on October 11th, this day serves as a reminder of the importance of empowering and safeguarding the girl child, while advocating for their rights and education.

With the theme “Our Time is Now—Our Rights, Our Future,” this year’s International Day of the Girl Child emphasizes the urgent need to address the challenges faced by girls worldwide and highlights their rights and potential to shape a better future for themselves and their communities.

The statement signed by the press secretary to Ondo First Lady,  Oluwatobi Fagbemi stated that “The BEMORE Summer Boot Camp, an impactful initiative of the First Lady, Chief Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu has been at the forefront of championing various courses to achieve this objective.

“This programme has empowered young girls in critical areas such as Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Entrepreneurship (STEM+E).

“With over 3,000 girls trained through the boot camp, these young women have acquired valuable skills and knowledge, positioning them as the next generation of confident and competent leaders.

“Chief Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu who has long been a strong advocate for the protection of the rights of the girl child, recognizes the significant hurdles that girls face, including child marriages, female genital mutilation, limited learning opportunities, violence, and discrimination.

“Her commitment to this cause is evident through the Yellow Cards Initiative, introduced in February 2021. This initiative aims to identify early warning signs of gender-based violence (GBV) in schools, providing children with an awareness card to report incidents promptly.

“In July 2021, Governor Akeredolu signed into law the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law (VAPP) 2021. This legislation seeks to protect individuals, including the girl child, from all forms of sexual and gender-based violence.

“Chief Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu acknowledged the significant progress made in Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu’s administration in empowering the girl child and creating an enabling environment for their growth and development. She emphasized that the girl child had never been prioritized to this extent in the state.

“She urges parents, guardians, and educators not to rest on their oars in promoting gender equality through education and protection of the girl child. She underscores that positioning them to be self-reliant is of utmost importance.

“The wife of the Governor passionately appeals for more Nigerians to join the campaign to empower the girl child.

“The Akeredolu’s administration remains resolute in its determination to protect and provide opportunities and resources that help girls fulfill their potential and lead lives free from violence.”

Nov 11: ‘Imo Is APGA Stronghold, We’ll Defeat Uzodinma,’ -Soludo

0

From Anambra state where the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, is currently in control, Governor Charles Soludo has urged Governor Hope Uzodinma, the governor of the neighbouring state, Imo to brace up for defeat in the next month governorship election.

APGA will do all within its powers to make an incursion into the neighbouring state in the November 11 governorship election, the Anambra helmsman has declared.

He disclosed this while receiving the party’s governorship candidate in Imo, Tony Ejiogu, at the Anambra State Government House in Awka on Tuesday.

Governor Hope Uzodinma of the APC is seeking a second term in the November 11 governorship election in the state, with a groundswell of support for him from the ruling party which has vowed to retain the state.

Some residents of the state who spoke with the magazine said Governor Uzodinma has done well, considering what he met on the ground when he became governor. Others disagree.

Recall that First Lady Remi Tinubu had last month said President Bola Tinubu and the ruling APC are solidly behind the incumbent who is trying to test his popularity among Imolites for the second time after ruling for four years.

Speaking on the Imo governorship, the First Lady said: “As we navigate the part towards the governorship election in Imo State let us not lose sight of the transformative power that women hold.

“I call on all of you great women of Imo State, to come out en mass and vote overwhelmingly for Governor Hope Uzodimma for a well-deserved second term and to complete the good work he has started, and I believe you know that he has the backing of this present administration.”

In spite of the support the governor is getting from ‘Abuja’ for re-election, Soludo said that will not count for him because the state is a ‘stronghold of APGA” which will try to claim victory during the election expected to be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in less than a month.

He said: “You’ll agree with me that Imo state has been a stronghold of APGA. Most of our founding fathers are also from the State. Imo is APGA, and APGA is Imo. We have been through trials and tribulations in the past, yet we remained strong as a party. It’s time to reclaim Imo through our persistence and consistency.

“APGA is the first party to be registered with the word ‘progressives’ in its name. Others see parties as a political platform to win elections but in APGA, we believe in true federalism with a mandate, core value, framework, and structure to move the nation forward.”

Soludo added: “The herculean task of defeating an incumbent is achievable as evidenced by the massive support the party has enjoyed in the past in Imo where it won elections with the forthcoming governorship election. APGA has shown and demonstrated its commitment to the development and progress of Imo State through a credible candidate.”

Meanwhile, analysts insist that it would be difficult to defeat the incumbent governor considering the massive support he has been receiving from inside and outside the state in a bid to renew his mandate.

Brace Up For Petrol Scarcity; Subsidy Is Back- Marketers

0

Independent petrol marketers in the country have described the claim by the NNPCL to the effect that the federal government is not paying subsidy as false.

They urge Nigerians to prepare for another round of scarcity of the commodity as the current price cannot be sustained due to the rising cost of crude oil in the international market, and the devaluation of the naira.

The marketers said on Tuesday that the price of petrol should not be less than N800 per litre rather than the N580 that’s being sold currently at filling stations.

Recall that the Group Managing Director of the NNPCL, Mele Kyari after meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Monday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja refuted suggestions that the federal government has started paying subsidy to marketers

“No subsidy whatsoever. We are recovering our full cost from the products that we import. We sell to the market, and we understand why the marketers are unable to import. We hope that they do it very quickly and these are some of the interventions the government is doing. There is no subsidy,” Kyari had stated,” the NNPCL boss told journalists after meeting with the president.

But marketers under the aegis of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria said yesterday that the price of petrol should not be less than N800/litre if there was no subsidy on the commodity.

The National Secretary, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, John Kekeocha, blasted the federal government for deceiving Nigerians by claiming that subsidy has not returned, he said billions of naira is currently being paid to subsidise the commodity in order for Nigerians not to pay for more than N620 per litre that’s being sold.

He stated: “I don’t know why the government keeps peddling lies. When they removed the PMS subsidy, a dollar was about N700 and they made us believe that the removal of subsidy would make the supply of products play according to the dictates of demand and supply, looking at forex as the benchmark.

“Now, this is just simple arithmetic, if you removed the subsidy when a dollar was about N700 and today the dollar is more than N1,000, and you are still supplying and giving products at almost the same rate, what is the magic? They are subsidising products as we speak.

“They are spending billions of naira to subsidise products, and because they know that this country may go on fire if Nigerians buy products at about N1, 000/litre, they keep twisting facts. Why can’t they come out and tell the world the truth.

He urged Nigerians to brace up for the scarcity of the product soon, because “in a very short time there will be no product anywhere in this country, apart from the tank farms that have access to diesel.”

CBN: Anger Over Dollarisation Of Economy; Reps Kick

0
Abbas Tajudeen - Speaker

The House of Representatives has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to investigate the use of dollars for domestic transactions.

The lawmakers said during plenary on Tuesday, that the use of the American greenback for the payment of school fees, airline fares, house rent, and other purposes, is putting pressure on the naira.

The lawmakers made the suggestion is coming after the respected senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Femi Falana dragged the CBN to court over its failure to stop the dollarization of the economy.

In the suit marked FHC/L/CS/476/23, filed before a Federal High Court in Lagos, the senior advocate said the abdication of duty by the CBN to enforce its powers under Section 2 of CBN Act has affected the economy negatively.

The Nigerian currency, now exchanged for more than N1000 to the US dollar has been consistently devalued against other foreign currencies. The problem became even worse after the CBN adopted the convergence of the exchange rates in June this year.

According to the apex bank, the step was necessary to improve forex supply, enhance customer confidence, discourage speculation, and ensure the overall stability of the forex market.

Apparently, the expected gains have been far-fetched, raising serious questions among not a few Nigerians on what should be done next to arrest a situation where the naira will further lose its value against other foreign currencies.

Speaking on the issues yesterday, the lawmakers cited speculative activities in the forex market as a major problem putting pressure on the naira. The reps also urged the CBN to increase the withdrawal limit of the naira to reduce the pressure on the dollar and other foreign currencies.

One of the lawmakers, Ademorin Kuye wondered why “Today, flights by foreign airlines are charged in dollars. In real estate businesses across the country, they are charging in dollars. This is criminal. Some private schools are collecting fees in dollar. This must be looked into.”

Instructively, the lawmakers passed a resolution on the CBN to engage with stakeholders on how to stabilize the naira, following a motion moved by Ismaila Haruna Dabo.

The House also mandated its Committees on Banking Regulations and National Security and Intelligence to interface to investigate the use of the US dollar as legal tender for domestic transactions.

Falana in his suit urged the court to determine “Whether by virtue of Section 16 of the Central Bank Act the exchange rate of the naira shall be determined, from time to time, by a suitable mechanism devised by the Bank for that purpose?

He claimed that ‘the seeming non-performance of the defendant’s statutory obligations culminated in dollarisation of the country’s economy which has in turn affected the country’s economy negatively contrary to the objectives of the defendant as enshrined in Section 2 of CBN Act.’

In a 10-paragraph affidavit in support of the Originating Summons deposed to by one Mr. Ayodele Aribisala, the plaintiff averred that the defendant had allowed many landlords in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and other cities in the country for which the defendant was established to serve to collect rents in dollars.  He added that: “The Defendant has refused to stop the collection of school fees and rents in dollars in Nigeria.”

According to Falana, the dollarisation of the Nigerian economy and the failure to address the multiple exchange rates further pushed the naira to its current fluctuating state.

“That the failure of the defendant to perform its statutory duties has resulted in the constant devaluation, depreciation and unending plunge of the naira.

“That the resultant effect of the abdication of defendant’s statutory duties has also affected the country’s economy and many businesses adversely,” he said.

The suit dated March 16, has the CBN as the sole defendant.

Murder So Cruel: “How Vet Staff Found The Burnt And Bloodied Body Of  My Brother And His Wife”

0

By Charles Igbo

A brother of former Banker, Evangelist Allwell Anyasado, has revealed how assassins killed the Evangelist  and his wife, Scholastica last Friday.

Anyasodo and his wife were gruesomely murdered in their home at Dile Emeohe Mbaoma Emii in the Owerri North Local Government Area last Friday.

The assassins who killed them took advantage of the noise coming from a neighboring compound where a wake-keep for a deceased was taking place.

When they arrived the Anyasdo home, they dragged the former Banker and his wife to their newly completed house, into which they had not even moved and killed them.

They were not shot to death, according to eye witness accounts.

From the gory video of their bodies, they were butchered to death. Evangelist Anyasodo was, particularly, given a special treatment. After he was stabbed and butchered with a matchete, his body was burnt beyond recognition with what is suspected to be acid poured on him. Obviously that was because  setting his body on fire would have attracted attention.

For Mrs Anyasodo, her neck was cut off, almost, while her whole body was, at once, stabbed and matchetted. There was rivulet of blood from the old house to the new house.

A devastated and shaken brother of Evangelist Anyasodo who spoke on the  grissly murder said it was the rivulet of blood in the compound that  drew the attention of a vet staff who came early Saturday morning to vaccinate the birds in the Anyasodo home to the atrocity.

According to him, he last spoke to his brother on the night of the gruesome murder. He said that they had both come back from the wake-keep, and departed to their individual homes. He, however, said that he spoke to his brother thereafter who informed him that the vet staff would visit in the morning to vaccinate the fowls. “I didn’t know that was the last discussion I would have with my brother.”

He revealed that nobody was aware of the tragedy that befell his brother and wife until the female vet staff arrived for the vaccination Saturday morning. When she entered the compound, she was greeted by an unusual loud silence. Then, she saw the blood strewn all over the compound, and raised an alarm. The blood was quickly traced to the new building of the Anyasodos where the unrecognizable bodies were discovered.

Scholastica, was a native of Emekuku, also in the Owerri North LGA as her matrimonial home, Emii.

The couple’s children are said to be based outside Nigeria. As the bodies of the couple were being evacuated, scores of people  watched the  scene in disbelief and shock.

Politicians Plot Disruption of Tinubu’s Social Intervention Programmes;  President Insists NSIPA, NASSCO Remain Under Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Ministry

Bola Ahmed Tinubu

By Akinjide Aina,  Abuja

This Magazine has learnt that President Bola Tinubu may be headed for a collision course with politicians whose cronies and interests were ignored by the Federal Government in the restructured Social Intervention Programmes which are under the supervision and management of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation as the said politicians are, allegedly, clandestinely plotting an Executive Bill to the Senate to seek the separation of the programmes from the Ministry.

The plotters want them to become a full-fledged Government Agency  under the direct supervision of the Presidency.

The programmes are the National Social Investment Programmes Agency,(NSIPA) and the National Social Safety Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO).

It was gathered that the elements plotting to  excise the two entities from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation hope to work towards getting themselves and their cronies appointed as pioneer Executive Secretary or Director-General (depending on the nomenclature the Senate opts for should the plot sail through) of the would-be agencies if they succeed in getting the Senate to upgrade the two Programmes to Federal Government Agencies.

Godswill Akpabio - Senate President
Akpabio, Senate President: Any Executive before the Senate?

However, the President is said to be incensed by this move and has directed that NSIPA and NASSCO remain fully under the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

“The Presidency has restated that the National Social Investment Programmes Agency,(NSIPA) and National Social Safety Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO), remain under the supervision of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

“The President is not aware of any executive bill to the Senate to bring NASSCO or N-POWER under the Presidency”, a presidential source told the magazine

According to the source who pleaded that his name should not be mentioned “because of the sensitivity of the issue”, “the Presidency views this as a shocker as it would, of course, not be in good faith at this crucial time when Nigerians are expectant.

“It will only lead to disruption of implementation, which has begun seamlessly”

“The restructured programmes design, which is to address 15 million households to take the poor and vulnerable households in Nigeria out of poverty in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda will continue to remain under the supervision of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation”

Justice Nweze, JSC,  Departs Abuja In A Blaze Of Glory

0
Justice Chima Centus Nweze

Justice Chima Centus Nweze of the Supreme Court of Nigeria until July 29, 2023, formally left the apex Court on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 enroute  Obollo, Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State. He  finally departed from there to join his ancestors.

His departure from the nation’s capital where he arrived on October 29, 2014, following elevation from the Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court was as glorious as the movement of a king.

Two lords, the lord of Court where he shone like a star, and the lord of God where his presence was also preeminent all had good words on him as they, along with other dignitaries, bid him farewell.

A Press Release signed by Ike Abonyi, for the Burial Committee, said the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, along with his colleagues in the Apex Court, paid glowing tribute to Nweze whom they agreed on, Tuesday, was a quintessential Justice whose commitment to the enthronement of rule through quality justice delivery was outstanding.

The CJN said the late Jurist “was one of those cerebrally mobile Judicial officers in our contemporary history who had latched on our memory an enviable degree of intellectual eminence and legal finesse that encompassed all spheres of philosophy and methodical reasoning.”

Speaking in Abuja at a valedictory court session in honour of the late Nweze, the CJN said the late Justice was a very unique and nationalistic personality with a radical posture of justice and the rule of law, adding that, even though he looked simple and unassuming, the late Justice was very strict and consciously principled in disposition.

“He was always very warm and engaging. Like all great men, my Lord was a man of paradox; simple without being simplistic in disposition; elitist and dignified in carriage, yet he related exceptionally well with everyone around him, especially the underprivileged and the downtrodden in the society”.

The CJN who had been together with Justice  Nweze from the Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court noted that the entire life of the late Justice Nweze was completely devoid of duplicity, undue arrogance, and elitism, as some people often manifest once fortune smiles on them and they are elevated to positions of influence and affluence.

He said though Justice Nweze was a dogged fighter for whatever cause he believed in, he was an astute advocate of the arts of mediation and reconciliation.

“At the Supreme Court, my Lord, Hon. Justice Nweze, exhibited immense scholarship and rare jurisprudential candour. All his judgments were laced with academic flavour and intellectual steam. His judicial pronouncements were like ocean waves that move with vigour and vibrancy.

“His judgments covered a gamut of issues that have offered us sufficient food for thought; not just as judicial officers and lawyers but as citizens of the global village who are desirous of having a free, peaceful, and egalitarian society.

According to the CJN, “His intellectual accomplishments have, to a large extent, crystallized the legal profession by injecting confidence in the minds of practitioners, law students, and the common man on the street. His astuteness and eloquence in the courtroom, coupled with the seamless application of legal wisdom to every matter, made him an enigma of some sort”

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), in his speech, said the Supreme Court of Nigeria is overwhelmed with the workload of cases.

Represented by the Solicitor General of the Federal and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Beatrice Jeddy-Agba, the AGF said the Supreme Court of Nigeria is one of the most overworked courts in the world.

He said Justice Nweze’s life will continue to shine as an example to all, adding that, the late Justice contributed immensely to the development of the nation’s judiciary.

The Body of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (BOSAN) represented by Damion Dodo (SAN), said the late Nweze distinguished himself on the Bench and had delivered qualitative judgments during his stay on the Supreme Court Bench.

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), in his speech, said the late Nweze made “significant contributions to the growth of our jurisprudence”.

Then, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, where Justice Nweze worshipped, the Auxiliary Bishop of Abuja Archdiocese, His Lordship Dr Anselm Umoren led other Priests to a requiem Mass to bid Justice Nweze farewell from Abuja.

The Homilist at the well attended Church service,  Rev Fr Emeka Ngwoke of the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka eulogized the quality of life lived by Justice Nweze. He said that it’s not necessarily how long one stays on this earth that matters but his contributions to society.

Fr Ngwoke noted that the moment you are born, you can die, pointing out that your impact in the short period is what matters. He noted that Jesus Christ lived a short life on earth and died over 2000 years ago but his impact continues to be felt.

He noted that from records of Justice Nweze by various groups including his colleague-Justices, he left behind enviable records to keep him in the minds of the people, if you cannot remember Justice Nweze through his judgments or his books, you will remember him through his charity to humanity.

Roll call of those who graced the two farewell activities on Tuesday in Abuja in Court of Law and House of God are inexhaustible, All the Serving Justices of the Apex Court led by the CJN, Justice Ariwoola, President of the Court of Appeal, some serving and retired Appeal Court Justices. Former CJN Walter Onnoghen, former Supreme Court Justice Mary Peter-Odili, Senior Advocates of Nigeria SAN in their numbers, Judges of various High Courts. The Chief Judge of Enugu state,  Deputy Inspector General of Police, Frank Mbah.

Chijoke Edeoga, Senator Okey Ezea of Enugu North. Current and former Senators and House of Representatives.

Imo Pensioners Adopt Uzodimma For Second Term

0
Imo Pensioners Adopt Uzodimma

Members of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners, Imo State Branch, have adopted Governor Hope Uzodimma for re-election.

The adoption is the first in the history of the Imo State.

They did on Tuesday at their Headquarters, Senior Citizens Centre on Orlu Road, Owerri during their 2023 Pensioners Day celebration.

In what was obviously the mother of all adoptions, the pensioners said that no Governor since the days of former Governor Achike Udenwa has been as kind and considerate about their plight as Governor Uzodimma.

They said that Governor Uzodimma has remained religious in his payment of their pensions and other palliatives due to them.

Three Pensioners drawn from the three zones of the State had moved the motion for Governor Uzodimma’s adoption.

Comrade Alexander Umunnakwe (Orlu) had moved the motion for his adoption which was seconded by Chief Laz Ejiogu (Okigwe) and Mrs. Stella Alozie of (Owerri).

The motion was put to vote by the Chairman of Pensioners in Imo State, Chief Sir Josiah Ugochukwu and in a voice vote, all the pensioners affirmed that Governor Uzodimma is their sole candidate for the November 11 governorship election in Imo.

They said they will cast their votes for the Governor to continue with his good works for Pensioners in Imo State and to consolidate on the gains he has recorded so far.

They also proceeded to give the Governor an award as “the most Pensioners Friendly Governor for Imo State.”

Expressing his gratitude and thanks for the endorsement and the award, the Governor assured the Pensioners that by the end of the year they would have been receiving their gratuity, expressing happiness that over 95 percent of them are currently receiving their monthly pensions.

On the minor percentage of pensioners who are yet to receive their pay, he assured them that a committee of the Head of the Service and Chairman of Pensioners and others is working out the issues surrounding their case. He promised that he will never renege in continually paying them their allowances.

He promised that the few persons will start getting paid their pensions before November, 11, 2023.

Governor Uzodimma said that he is committed to ensure that they don’t continue to regret the youthful years they invested in working for Imo State.

He thanked them for their sense of organization and discipline, noting that they have been decent in their demands.

Governor Uzodimma recalled the various problems surrounding the payment of pensions when he came to office in 2020 when there was no single data “as different people were carrying different lists and records.

“The consequence of these was the initial delay in the payment of pensions.”

He promised that “no matter how long it takes for a pensioner to start receiving his pensions the arrears will be paid in due course.”

He congratulated the Pensioners on their Day and reminded them that they don’t “need to go to court to get their entitlement” and appealed to them to be patient with his Government in all other demands they are making.

The Governor told the Pensioners that the delay in the payment of gratuity is partly because of the huge debts he inherited on assumption of office –  N320 billion – and informed them that his administration has been able to reduce the debt to N162 billion, a situation the Debt Management Office (DMO) has given him approval to apply for bond to pay the gratuities.

He assured them that all pensioners will receive a certain percentage of their gratuity when payment commences “because the gratuity debt is too big to be paid once.”

Governor Uzodimma described his support and endorsement as well as the award given to him as “organic and natural,” and coming from the bottom of the pensioners hearts.

He also thanked the leadership of the Pensioners and Labour at both the State and National levels and promised that he will not disappoint their expectations.

In his remarks at the occasion the Special Adviser on Labour Matters, Comrade Austin Chilakpo described the Governor as loving, kind and exceptional.

He said that since Governor Uzodimma’s  assumption of office in Imo State he has made Pensioners welfare a top priority.

“Since 2020 the Governor came on board no worker has been sacked in the Imo State’s work force” and that “the Governor’s promise to pay the gratuity was not forced on him.”

He tanked the pensioners for endorsing him as their sole candidate for the coming governorship election.

In his address,  the State Chairman of Nigerian Union of Pensioners and South East Chairman, Chief (Sir) Josiah Ugochukwu corroborated that the Governor deserves a second tenure for all his welfare packages to Imo Pensioners as can be observed in their regular pensions, 13th month payments and even in the last palliative to them to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal.

He emphasized that “in the South East States, it is only Imo State Pensioners that were considered in the sharing of the said palliative.”

He appealed to the Governor to include the few percentage of pensioners that are not yet receiving their pensions in the payroll of Pensioners, in addition to helping to re-roof their Centre.

He personally announced that the adoption by the Pensioners for the Governor is “MOTHER OF ALL ADOPTIONS”.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Chief Barr Josiah Eze who is also the Special Adviser on Labour Education thanked the Governor for his “unquantifiable magnanimity to the pensioners in Imo State.”

Eze said that part of the reason they insisted that the Governor should come for the celebration “is to tell him that come 11th of November, 2023 the pensioners are with him 100%.”

“The train is for the Governor.”

Present at the occasion were the Chief of Staff, Bar. Nnamdi Anyaehie, members of the State expanded Exco, the National President of NUP, Comrade Ikechukwu Asumisi, and other National Officers.

Governor Sanwo Olu Set To Reorder 2023 Budget, Writes Lawmakers

0

By Akinwale Kasali

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approached the Lagos State House of Assembly to reorder the sum of N234.669 billion from the 2023 budget of N1.768 trillion.

The Governor is seeking the approval of the Lawmakers for the reorder process which he says would enable the Government focus more on capital expenditure and palliatives to cushion the effects of the current economic challenges faced by residents of the State.

In a letter read by the Clerk of the House, Barrister Olalekan Onafeko, at plenary on Tuesday, Governor Sanwo-Olu told LAHA Members that the state was increasingly confronted with the need of his administration to meet the yearnings of the people.

He also noted that the 2023 budget had been partially implemented adding that as at 30th June, 2023, it had 76 percent overall performance.

“We noted that some of the major MDAs that are supposed to implement the capital expenditure are performing below expectation while others have almost exhausted their budgetary provisions,” the governor said in the letter dated 9th October, 2023, while noting that the administration plans to spend in priority areas once the approval is granted.

Governor Sanwo-Olu added that the government was working to ensure greater performance of the capital expenditure.

“Apart from this, we are confronted with the need of this administration to meet its electoral promises to the citizens and have resolved to take advantage of the clement weather condition in the later part of this year to complete various projects,” the letter explained.

He said the reordering had also become expedient to help ameliorate the effect of the removal of fuel subsidy and the harmonisation of the exchange rates which have resulted in economic challenges for the citizens.

He however listed some of the projects meant to be implemented with the reordered budget to include the Phase 1 Blue Rail Line, provision of programmes and projects for social inclusion, gender equality and youth, completion of Lekki-Epe Road Phase 3, provision of security and emergency equipment as well as zero-tolerance for potholes.

Bamise Ayanwola: LAHA  Renews Interest In Murdered BRT Passenger

The Murdered BRT passenger

By Akinwale Kasali

After over a year of neglect of the case of Bamise Ayanwola, a 22-year-old fashion designer who was murdered after boarding a Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, in the State in February 2022, the Lagos State House of Assembly has stated its desire to renew its interest in the case.

In setting the ball rolling, the Lawmakers decided to  invite the family of the deceased,  related Government Agency and the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, CDHR, for an update on the case which has been in the court.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, said the issue which was brought up by Hon. Steve Ogundipe under ‘Matter of Urgent Public Importance’ was worthy of deliberation.

Obasa commended the CDHR for bringing the issue to the fore, again, nearly two years after it happened.

“The issue of Bamise was brought to this House when it happened and I received the protesters, but at that point, the case was before the Police and the Court of Law.

“Unfortunately, the Judiciary is an institution on its own and we do not have the power to dabble into their activities. We cannot compel the judiciary but can only lend our voice by saying the people of the State are eager to know about the case.

“We need to invite the family, the civil society group and the agency of the government that has a role to play so that they can let us know how far they have gone.

“If we are encouraging people to make use of public transportation, then we must build that confidence that they are safe. All the buses on our roads must have CCTV cameras. Our new trains and terminals should also have. The essence of this is to prevent crime. Security is very crucial,” the Speaker said.

He noted that if in six months, the family of Bolanle Raheem, the lawyer who was murdered by a policeman, could get justice, there should also be justice for Bamise.

The Speaker thanked the Police for how far they have gone with the case involving the death of musician Ilerioluwa Aloba, also known as Mohbad.

Raising the issue, Hon. Ogundipe said the case had lingered for too long.

He said there was need to ensure justice was served as this would boost the confidence of Lagos residents in the government.

Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Noheem Adams, recalled that the CDHR and the family of Bamise recently protested to the House.

He said the about 500 protesters were promised that the House would act on their concern.

This is coming 24 Hours after Justice Ibironke Harrison of the Lagos State High Court had sentenced suspended Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, Drambi Vandi to death by hanging for the murder of Lagos-based lawyer, Mrs Omobolanle Raheem, who was shot dead by the trigger happy Police Officer on December 25th, 2022.
