2027: Jonathan Kicks Against Plans To Stop Him From Contesting

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has kicked against a suit in the federal high court Abuja seeking to disqualify him from running for president in 2027.

The suit filed by a lawyer Johnmary Jideobi, dated October 6, 2025, is seeking to stop the former Nigerian leader from participating in next year’s presidential election, on the basis that he has been sworn-in twice as president of the Federal Republic.

The suit is coming on the heels of recent moves by some political actors in the country to drag the former leader into the presidential race to challenge incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

On Thursday, some African Democratic Congress, ADC leaders visited the ex-president in his Abuja home to woo him to join other presidential aspirants seeking to dislodge President Tinubu next year.

Also, on Friday the Tanimu Turaki faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, during a visit called on him to contest for the country’s highest office again.

The ex- president, in his response, had told the two delegations from the  ADC and PDP that he was still consulting to decide whether he would run or not as Commander-in-chief.

In the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/2102/2025,  Jideobi is seeking some reliefs from the court, in his quest to stop Jonathan, which  includes; an order of perpetual injunction, restraining the former Nigerin leader from from presenting himself to any political party in the country for the purpose of contesting next year’s presidential election.

But the former president has countered the suit in a counter-affidavit filed by his lawyer, Chief Chris Uche, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, on May 5 saying the plaintiff lacks the locus standi to carry out the action, and that the matter of his qualification to run for president has been settled by two courts, a federal high court and the Court of Appeal.

In a Notice of Preliminary Objection, Jonathan stressed that Jideobi’s suit lacked merit and should be dismissed immediately, describing the suit as a gross abuse of court process, adding that the plaintiff has not proved how the participation of Jonathan in the 2027 election will affect him.

“The plaintiff has no personal interest or legal right whatsoever affected by the subject matter of this suit.”
In a 14 paragraph affidavit deposed in support of the Notice of Preliminary Objection, Jonathan maintained that the plaintiff’s suit is utterly speculative, academic, hypothetical, and not based on any real or existing dispute.
“The plaintiff relies on media publications and conjecture suggesting that the 1st defendant may contest a future election.
“The 1st defendant has (i) not declared any intention to contest any election; (ii) not been nominated as a candidate; and not participated in any electoral process giving rise to this suit.”

Referring to Section 137(3) of the Constitution (as amended) which was introduced by a constitutional amendment (Act No. 10 of 2017) which came into force in June 2018, the deponent, Emmanuel Tsebo, told the court that Jonathan “has not been elected as President more than once”, adding, “That the tenure of the 1st defendant ended in 2015, prior to the coming into force of the said amendment.”
He added, “That the said constitutional amendment does not state that it applies retrospectively.

“That by settled principles of law, constitutional provisions do not operate retrospectively to affect vested rights.”
Besides, the deponent averred that the issue raised by the plaintiff concerning the constitutional eligibility of Jonathan had already been litigated upon and determined by competent Courts of law.

“That in Suit No. FHC/YNG/CS/86/2022 between Andy Solomon & Anor vs. Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan & Ors, the Federal High Court sitting at Yenagoa unequivocally held that the provisions of Section 137(3) of the Constitution do not apply retrospectively to the 1st Defendant, and a certified true copy of the judgement is annexed herewith as Exhibit “A”.

“That the said judgement remains valid, subsisting and binding.

“That the Court of Appeal in the case of Cyriacus Njoku vs. Goodluck Jonathan & Ors, Appeal No CA/A/574/2013 also held that the 1st defendant’s assumption of office upon the demise of President Umaru Yar’Adua did not amount to an elected presidential tenure within the contemplation of the Constitution, and therefore did not count as a prior elected term. A certified true copy of the judgment is annexed herewith as Exhibit “6B”.

“That the Court of Appeal further held that the 1st defendant was running his “first term” after his election in 2011.

“That the said judgement of the Court of Appeal remains valid, subsisting and binding.

“That the plaintiff’s present suit seeks to relitigate the same issue already determined by courts of competent jurisdiction.

“That this suit is a collateral attack on subsisting judgments of courts of competent jurisdiction.

“That the plaintiff’s suit seeks to convert this Honourable Court to sit as a Court of Appeal over the judgments of the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal.”

Governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) under the aegis of Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) rose from their meeting Friday, at the Imo State Government House in Abuja, and passed a vote of confidence in the leadership of their Chairman, Sen Hope Uzodimma, and his Vice, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State.

The meeting which lasted for more than three hours, and presided over by Governor Uzodimma, basically looked at issues around the forthcoming Primaries of the APC, and how the Governors and all Party members and different Committees set up for the upcoming Primaries can work together to deliver a hitch free national and subnational exercise.

Chairman of the PGF, Governor Uzodimma, his Deputy, Governor Sani and the Governor of Kebbi State, Alhaji Nasir Idris, briefed the media after their meeting surrounded by their colleagues who were also in attendance.

Governor Uzodimma had said that the meeting had become imperative as the APC Primaries are around the corner, hence the need for the Party to be more united to deliver a hitch free exercise under the supervision of the Governors, the leadership of the Party and the Committees.

Uzodimma said that with the Thursday submission of President Bola Tinubu’s form to contest for reelection in January 2027, there was need for all the APC Governors to collaboratively work hard with other Party members and stakeholders to ensure that the President who has shown performance in his first tenure is reelected next year.

The PGF Chairman further spoke about a more united Party and the need to strengthen support at all levels in the overall interest of the APC.

Also speaking, Governor Sani maintained that the unity of the Party is not negotiable at the moment, and that the APC Governors have proven to be more united now than ever in supporting President Tinubu and Party.

On the purported change of leadership of the PGF which trended on social media ahead of the meeting of Friday, Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State dismissed the report as complete false.

“That is not correct. You can see our Chairman, Governor Hope Uzodimma and his Vice, Governor Uba Sani are all here. They are our leaders. We don’t have any problems. Let me use this opportunity to also move a vote of confidence in the leadership of Governor Hope Uzodimma and his Vice, Governor Uba Sani,” Governor Idris stated.

Recall that there was a purported change of leadership in the Forum which trended on social media and some traditional newspapers on Friday which made the Director General of the PGF, Mr. Folorunso Aluko, to issue a strong rebuttal over the fake report, and reaffirmed the leadership of Governor Uzodimma.

The All Progressive Congress APC has strongly rejected claims suggesting that the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has endorsed the second term ambition of Abia state Governor, Alex Otti.

The rebuttal is coming against the backdrop of growing speculations  amidst social media reports claiming that Kalu has jettisoned his much touted gubernatorial bid to endorse Governor Otti’s re-election.

According to the reports, Kalu has instead resolved to concentrate on consolidating his stay at the National Assembly.

It will be recalled that the Deputy Speaker was said to have earlier in the week procured the expression of interest and nomination forms for the Abia Governorship and House of Representatives race, a development which had accentuated rumours of abandoning his pursuit for the state’s topmost job.

But in a statement on Friday May 8, 2026, from Uche Aguoru, its spokesperson, the Abia State chapter of the APC described the reports of the Deputy Speaker’s purported endorsement of Governor Otti as false, misleading and mischievous.

The party accused Governor Otti’s media minders of being behind the cowardly misinformation circulating in social space.

While calling on party members, supporters and Abia residents to disregard the reports, the APC emphasized the unflinching commitment of Kalu to the  party’s quest at staking a strong claim in the governance space of Abia state come 2027.

“The attention of the APC in Abia State has been drawn to a misleading, malicious and deceptive propaganda being circulated across various media platforms allegedly by Governor Alex Otti’s media team.

“For the benefits of unsuspecting members of the public who may be misled by these desperate falsehood, we wish to categorically state the Rt Hon Benjamin Okezie Kalu has never, at any time, either publicly or privately, endorsed Governor Alex Otti for a second term in office.

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has revealed reasons for relocation of some Saudi Arabia bound pilgrims from the newly commissioned Gateway Internal Airport, Iperu in Ogun state to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, (MMIA) Lagos.

It dismissed reports suggesting that the newly commissioned Gateway International Airport, Iperu, Ogun State, was rejected by Saudi carrier Flynas for Hajj operations, describing such claims as false, misleading and entirely unfounded.

Reacting to media reports surrounding the temporary relocation of Ogun pilgrims to the MMIA, Lagos, NAHCON Chairman, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, clarified that the adjustment was purely a matter of operational timing and flight scheduling, and not a consequence of any deficiency or rejection of the Gateway Airport by the airline.

According to Ambassador Yusuf, the decision followed a careful review of flight logistics, turnaround timelines and the broader coordination of the ongoing 2026 Hajj airlift exercise.

He stressed that at no point did Flynas declare the airport unsuitable or unsafe for operations, contrary to insinuations circulating in some sections of the media.

He explained that Hajj operations involve highly sensitive scheduling arrangements tied to Saudi Arabia’s aviation windows, aircraft rotation plans and pilgrim movement coordination across different states, adding that such operational adjustments are not unusual during large-scale international pilgrimages.

The NAHCON Chairman urged the public, intending pilgrims and stakeholders to disregard speculative narratives aimed at creating panic or discrediting the airport project, insisting that Gateway International Airport remains a functional and approved facility capable of supporting international operations.

Ambassador Yusuf further reassured affected pilgrims that all necessary arrangements had been made to guarantee their safe and timely transportation to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, while commending the Ogun State Government for its cooperation and support throughout the exercise.

He appealed for calm and patience from pilgrims and their families, emphasizing that the welfare, safety and successful participation of Nigerian pilgrims remain NAHCON’s highest priority.

Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, has purchased nomination form of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which signals his entry into the 2027 presidential race.

Amaechi, the immediate past Minister of Transportation, said that the nomination form was obtained on his behalf on Friday by former Edo State Governor and prominent ADC chieftain, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, at the party National Headquarters in Abuja.

Amaechi had, also, in 2023, contested for the primary election against the incumbent President, Bola Tinubu and others.

Amaechi’s formal entry into the contest has already generated widespread political interest across the country. Many stakeholders describe him as one of the most experienced and nationally recognised figures within the opposition coalition.

An administrator and influential political mobiliser, Amaechi brings decades of governance experience spanning the legislative arm, State administration, and federal executive service.

The National President of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, MACBAN, Bello Bodejo has been arrested by security operatives under what many have perceived as hazy and questionable circumstances.

 

Bodejo was arrested on Thursday night May 7, 2026 by personnel of the Department of State Service DSS, hours after arriving Jalingo ,the Taraba state capital, via a private jet.

 

The MACBAN national leader who is angling for the Taraba Central Senatorial District seat on the platform of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, was arrested shortly after addressing his supporters drawn from the five local councils that make up Taraba Central.

 

Although his whereabouts, and reasons for his arrest have not been stated, Bodejo was arrested by same security personnel that escorted him to Jalingo, after he refused to renounce his Senatorial ambition as allegedly demanded by the authorities.

 

He was said to have vehemently rejected several entreaties and pressure both from the powers-that-be to withdraw from the Senatorial race .

 

According to Umar, one of his aides, the MACBAN national president was seized during a visit to the office of a security agency in company with some of his political and business associates.

 

Those on the visit with him were, allegedly, asked to leave  while Bodejo was held.

 

He expressed serious concern and fears over the whereabouts of the Miyetti Allah leader.

 

“At the moment, we do not know where he has been taken to.

 

“The same security personnel that escorted and protected him from Abuja to Jalingo were the ones who later arrested him.

 

“We are yet to be informed of the reason(s) for his arrest ,and our major concern now is that we do not know where he is being detained”, Umar stated .

 

Instructively, Bodejo had, while addressing thousands of  his supporters and during an interactive session with the media , vowed  not to step down for anybody in the Senatorial race.

 

“I didn’t purchase the expression of interest and nomination forms only to step down for somebody .

 

“I am in the race to win ,and nobody is going to force me to step down 

 

“The consensus committee set up by the State Governor has not contacted me. Besides, let  me make it clear, that I will not step down for anybody, no matter the pressure”,  the MACBAN president vowed.

 

As at the time of reporting, no official statement had been issued by security agencies on Bodejo’s arrest.

The Federal Capital Territory, (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has flayed critics of the Government for providing accommodation for Judges, saying it cannot erode the independence of the Judiciary.

 

​The Minister made the remark on Friday, during his routine projects inspection within the nation’s capital, Abuja.

 

Addressing recent criticisms regarding the executive’s role in building judicial residences, Wike dismissed claims that such projects erode judicial independence. 

 

He pointed out the irony of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) criticizing government-funded infrastructure, while simultaneously accepting government sponsorship for their own activities and conferences.

 

​”The mere fact that the executive constructs does not mean that that will lead to interference in the judiciary,” Wike stated, reaffirming that providing comfortable housing allows judges to stay focused on their work without compromise.

 

​He also revealed during the inspection that the FCT Administration is shifting its focus towards industrial waste recycling to achieve a more sustainable and consistently clean capital city.

 

The Minister argued that the current culture of monthly environmental sanitation is insufficient for the long-term needs of a modern city.

 

​Beyond Monthly Sanitation, the Minister questioned the long-term impact of the traditional “Sanitation Saturday,” noting that while it provides a temporary facelift, it does not solve the root problem of waste accumulation.

 

​”If you do it on a Saturday, that Saturday is clean. What about other days?

 

 “For me, that is not a very major issue. Having a dump site is not enough for you to say that the problem is solved.”

 

​He emphasized that true waste management is an industrial necessity, rather than just a routine business task. 

 

According to the Minister, the goal is to transit from merely collecting refuse to processing it through modern technologies.

 

​The Minister disclosed that the FCTA is looking to move beyond the use of landfills and dump sites by establishing specialized factories. 

 

“The vision is to turn Abuja’s waste into a resource by creating new products, aligning with global best practices.

 

​ “The FCTA is already receiving and reviewing offers from experts who have successfully implemented these systems in other global cities.”

 

​In addition to waste management, the Minister provided updates on critical infrastructure projects slated for inauguration during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s third year in office.

 

​Wike expressed high satisfaction with the Judges’ residences, describing the work as “beautiful” and “99 percent ready.” 

 

He also inspected the road project, which is 100 percent complete, and the Court of Appeal (Abuja Division).

 

​While the Court of Appeal is 90 percent complete, the Minister was candid about his expectations for quality, ordering the contractor to correct several “errors” before the official commissioning.

​

Wike reiterated that the FCTA remains undeterred and focused on fulfilling its promises to the residents of Abuja through both physical infrastructure and innovative environmental solutions.

2027: Kwankwasiyya Movement Calls For Unity, Says Political Division Not Needed In Nigeria

As the 2027 General Election draws closer, the Kwankwasiyya Movement has called for unity and issue-based politics ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning against political division and targeted attacks on individuals.

 

The group, in a statement issued on Friday, signed by Habibu Sale Mohammed, spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, stated that Nigerians should focus on building a broad coalition that reflects national interest rather than promoting narratives that deepen division.

 

The group made the remarks following the recent marriage of convenience between Rabiu Kwankwaso and Peter Obi both of whom recently joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC. 

 

The group maintained that many Nigerians across regions and political backgrounds have welcomed the talks as a step toward national unity and democratic growth.

 

However, it expressed concern that some commentators, particularly  from parts of the Northern political space, are pushing what it described as misleading narratives aimed at discrediting Kwankwaso.

 

“It is unfortunate that some commentators have resorted to selective attacks and misleading narratives aimed specifically at discrediting Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso,” Mohammed said.

 

The group suggested that the criticism may be driven by fear of the political strength such an alliance could bring

 

“What appears to be troubling certain interests is not merely the possibility of political cooperation, but the enormous national potential such an alliance represents,” he stated.

 

The Kwankwasiyya Movement further noted that the partnership between Kwankwaso and Obi could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape by bringing together strong support bases from both the North and the South.

 

“For the first time in recent political history, Nigerians are witnessing the realistic possibility of a broad-based political understanding capable of bridging the long-standing regional divide,” the group said.

 

It also added that while Kwankwaso has a strong grassroots structure in the North, Obi enjoys wide support among youths and urban voters, especially in the South.

 

“Such cooperation introduces a new political equation that transcends ethnicity, religion, and regional sentiment,” he said.

 

The group also criticised what it described as double standards in how political engagements are judged.

 

“Some commentators portray Kwankwaso as ambitious or disruptive, while describing similar engagements by others as strategic and patriotic. This double standard is both unfortunate and revealing.”

 

It also insisted that coalition-building is a normal and necessary part of democracy and should not be discouraged.

 

“Any honest political observer understands that the coming together of leaders with proven electoral strength and independent structures can reshape Nigeria’s democratic landscape,” he added.

 

The group, however, urged political actors and commentators to act with fairness and maturity, especially at a time when Nigerians are facing economic and security challenges.

Fresh Gunmen Attack Leaves 13 Dead In Plateau Community

In a fresh attack, gunmen have again invaded Ngbra Zongo community, Kwall District of Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State killing no fewer than 13 persons.

 

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, threw the community into panic, leaving several residents with varying degrees of injuries.

 

A resident, Mr Philip Alanga, told Channels Television in Jos that the attackers invaded the community at about midnight, opening fire indiscriminately before attacking residents with machetes and other dangerous weapons.

 

According to him, the assailants moved from house to house, targeting innocent residents and leaving a trail of death and destruction.

 

“They came into the community around midnight and started shooting and hacking people to death. They moved from one house to another, attacking innocent people,” Alanga said.

 

He explained that many residents fled into nearby bushes to escape the violence, while several others were left injured and in urgent need of medical attention.

 

Confirming the incident, Secretary General of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), Mr Danjuma Auta, described the attack as barbaric, tragic, and condemnable.

 

Auta lamented the recurring attacks on communities in Bassa Local Government Area and other parts of Plateau State, calling on security agencies to strengthen surveillance and provide adequate protection for vulnerable rural communities.

 

He urged security operatives to swiftly apprehend those behind the killings and ensure they are brought to justice to prevent further bloodshed in the area.

 

Assailants had attacked the Nding Susut community in the Fan District of the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area on Tuesday, leaving five persons dead and three others injured, according to police authorities.

 

Residents said the attackers stormed the community at about 8 p.m. and opened fire on people who were seated outside their homes.

 

A community member, Weng Christopher, told Channels Television that the gunmen attacked members of a family seated in their compound, triggering panic in the area.

 

According to him, one of the victims initially escaped, but was later pursued and killed by the assailants.

 

“This is becoming too frequent. People are living in constant fear. We can no longer sleep peacefully because these attacks keep happening,” Christopher said.

 

While reacting to the incident, the Publicity Secretary of Berom Youth Moulders, Rwang Tengwong, condemned the killings and described the persistent attacks as disturbing.

 

“The gunmen came around 8 p.m. and attacked members of a family who were sitting outside. One person ran away but was later traced and killed,” Tengwong said.

Nasarawa To Host 76th Regular Meeting Of National Council On Health In November

The 76th Regular National Council on Health meeting has been scheduled to hold in November and will be hosted by Nasarawa state.

 

To this end, Nasarawa State Government has constituted 12 sub-committees to oversee preparations for the upcoming event.

 

Speaking at the inauguration of the committees on Friday in Lafia, Dr Gaza Gwamna, Commissioner for Health explained that the event would bring together health professionals and stakeholders from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

 

The Gwamna, who also doubles as the Chairman of the Central Working Committee, added that the National Council of Health meeting is the highest decision-making body to deliberate on key health policies and programmes and take decisions to improve the sector.

 

He explained that though the meeting was scheduled for November 2026, the state set up 12 sub-committees to handle logistics, security, accommodation, publicity, and medical services to ensure a smooth and successful hosting.

 

“The National Council on Health is a high-level platform where critical decisions on healthcare delivery are made.

 

“The National Council on Health meeting is typically convened annually to review progress and set directions for health programs and our state has been given the hosting right in 2026.

 

“Nasarawa State is committed to providing a conducive environment for robust discussions and outcomes that will benefit the health sector nationwide,” he said.

 

The Commissioner further disclosed that hosting the meeting presents an opportunity to showcase the state’s investments in healthcare infrastructure and to attract further collaboration with federal agencies and development partners.

 

Gwamna appreciated Gov. Abdullahi Sule of the state for his support and approval to host the meeting and assured that the state would be the best among the states that hosted the event in the past.

 

On his part, Dr Ibrahim Alhassan, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health said that members of the committees were drawn from various Ministries and Federal and state agencies.

 

The Permanent Secretary further said that the members of the various communities were carefully selected due to their expertise, experiences to deliver on their assigned responsibilities.
