The Imo State Police Command has confirmed that Comrade Joe Ajaero, the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, was beaten up by a mob.

In a statement issued by the Command on the viral news of  Ajaero’s arrest  in Owerri by the Police, the Police said that far from arresting the NLC President, its Operatives saved him from being lynched when he was attacked by those the Police described as  “a mob.”

The statement did not quite say the circumstances that led to the brutalization of Ajaero other than admitting that there was an altercation and argument between Ajaero and some people when they were discussing the modalities for the strike action declared in the State by the NLC. The Police, also, admitted  that Ajaero was taken to the Police Hospital for medical attention, a consequence of the beating he received.

The Police Command issued the statement in its defence of the news that it arrested the NLC President and took him to an unknown location.

The NLC President was in Owerri as part of arrangements of the Congress to mobilize workers for a mega protest rally in the State against the State Government.

Said the Police statement in part:

“In the course of their planning, it was reported that suggestions arose for the lockdown of some essential facilities particularly the airport, which led to the resistance of the process by some individuals.

“This led to scuffles and heated arguments and an eventual attack on the person of the President by a mob.

“Upon receiving this report, the Imo Police Command swiftly deployed police operatives to the scene where the Officer in Charge exercised his operational discretion by taking the NLC President into protective custody at the State Command Headquarters to ensure the protection of his life and that he was not lynched in the scuffle that followed.

“The Commissioner of Police thereafter directed that he should be taken to the Police Medical Services, Owerri, where he would be accorded medical attention as a result of the attack.

“He has, therefore, been accorded adequate security cover to proceed on his other legitimate engagements for the day.”

The Imo State Police Command has clarified that the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC) Joe Ajaero, was saved by Police from mob attack, and was not arrested by the Command.

A statement in Owerri, signed by the Police Public relations Officer, Imo State Command, confirmed that the NLC President was in Owerri as part of arrangements of the Congress to mobilize workers for a mega protest rally in the State.

The statement emphasized the existence of a Court injunction from the National Industrial Court of Nigeria holden in Owerri with Suit No. NICN/OW/41/2023 dated 27th October, 2023, barring the NLC from holding the intended protest rally in Owerri.

The NLC had earlier threatened to embark on nationwide strike if its President is not released.

The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Police Command, CP Mohammed Ahmed Barde,  therefore urged all concerned parties to ensure compliance with the Court directives so as to avoid jeopardizing the current security arrangements in Owerri and other parts of Imo State, even as the State gears up for the forthcoming electioneering process on 11th November 2023.

PASAN Strike; Conference Of Speakers Assure Early Resolution

As the nationwide strike by workers of the National and State Assemblies under Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, (PASAN) enters third day on Wednesday, the vice chairman, Conference of Speakers in Nigeria,

Adeoye Aribasoye, has assured that issues which led to the strike are being addressed.

Aribasoye, who is Speaker, Ekiti state House of Assembly, in a statement on Wednesday in Ado Ekiti, said efforts are in top gear to address the grievances of workers of State Houses of Assembly who have been on strike in the past few days.

The statement signed by Special Adviser Media, Babajide Agbeyo, to the speaker, noted that Aribasoye admitted that the strike has adversely affected legislative activities and preparation for budget passage in Ekiti and other states.

The Ekiti Speaker pointed out that members of PASAN have valid demands, but a far reaching resolution will have to accommodate the input of state governors, National Assembly leadership and other critical stakeholders.

According yo the statement, the Conference of Speakers is also not resting over the matter.

“We were in Abuja over the weekend to discuss. We’re discussing with the leadership of PASAN.

“We can’t say no to their demands but it will require the meeting of all stakeholders; Governors’ forum, leadership of Conference of Speakers, and even the National Assembly leadership.

“The subject of autonomy being highlighted is constitutional , and the conference of Speakers has met and will further meet to ensure speedy resolution and fine tuning of the bone of contention.

“The issue of autonomy is already guaranteed by the constitution. Probably they want the full implementation of section 121 of the constitution under the fifth alteration  to the 1999 constitution as amended.

“On our part, we’re meeting and we’ll still meet to ensure speedy resolution.”

Aribasoye expressed optimism that the strike will soon be over to give lawmakers room for legislative duties and to even attend to other issues that may still be of benefit to PASAN immediately or ultimately.

PASAN has been agitating that the provision of section 121 of the constitution granting financial autonomy for state assemblies be implemented.

“It’s Either You Work Or Go Away”, President Tinubu Charges Ministers

Bola Ahmed Tinubu

By Ayodele Oni

President Bola Tinubu has reminded Ministers that they are standing on the mandate of the people and must work assiduously towards achieving the task of their ministries or be ready to leave the government.

According to Tinubu, the continued stay in office of ministers in his cabinet will be based on performance which will be reviewed periodically.

The President gave the warning on Wednesday, while declaring open the 2023 Cabinet Retreat for Ministers, Presidential Aides, Permanent Secretaries and Top Government Functionaries, in Abuja.

He announced that the Special Adviser on Policy Coordination, Hadiza Bala-Usman, would spearhead the Result Delivery Unit.

“That is why we established Results Delivery Units. At the end of this retreat, you are going to sign a Bond of Understanding between the ministers, the Permanent Secretaries, and myself.

“If you are performing, there is nothing to fear. If you missed the objective, we review. If there no performance, you leave us. No one is an island, and the buck stops on my desk.

“I assure you that you will have a free hand. You must be intellectually inquisitive to ask how? Why? When? and why it must be immediate.

“I have taken a young lady, very dynamic Hadiza Usman to head that delivery units. If you have any complaints about her see me. If you are ready to work with her, stay there. Delivery, yes! We must achieve it for the sake of the millions of the people.”

The unit, he said, will monitor the performances of the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) across the eight priority areas of his administration – Food Security; Ending Poverty; Economic Growth and Job Creation; Access to Capital; Inclusivity; Security; Fairness and rule of law, and Anti-Corruption Stance.

The President reminded the ministers of their responsibility to serve the people who entrusted their mandate on him.

Tinubu reiterated the commitment of his administration to take 50 million Nigerians out of poverty, saying “poverty is not a shameful thing. It is only unacceptable. And we have to banish it because it is unacceptable.”

He also enjoined the ministers to focus on their ministries’ progress and come up with bold endeavours, stressing that his administration was determined to turn the nation’s population into an asset.

The President also urged the civil servants to cooperate with the ministers to form a formidable team for the good of the country.

“As I’ve stated before, no one succeeds alone. You the civil service, you must not see a minister as he or she will come and go and you will be there.

“You must make a positive team for the good of this country. Yes! I admit and accept the asset and liability of my predecessor, which is part of the definition in my professional background.

“But you are in this ship. You will make good of it but not wreck it. You are a member of a great family. Don’t see being a minister as opportunistic.

“See, he or she as a partner that we must take the ship forward. Navigating through turbulence and clear weather.”

Court Of Appeal Sacks Suswan

A former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswan, has lost his Senatorial seat.

Suswan,  PDP, representing Benue North Senatoral District, was sacked from the Senate by the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal on Wednesday, November 1st, 2023.

The Appellate Court, in a unanimous ruling by the three members of the Panel said Suswan did not win the election to the Senate conducted on February 25, 2023. It faulted the National Assembly Election Petition Court, Benue, for sacking Emmanuel Udende, APC, declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in favour of Suswan.

Said the Judges: “The judgement of the Tribunal delivered on 8/9/2023 is hereby set aside.

“The return of the Appellant as the winner of the Benue North East Senatorial District that was held on February 25 is hereby affirmed.

“Parties are to bear their respective cost.”

When INEC declared Udende winner, it said he defeated Suswan by polling 135, 573 votes to Suswan’s 112, 231 votes.

But Suswan went to Court and  pleaded that the exercise was marred by over-voting, irregularities, alterations and falsification of results. The lower Court agreed with him that there were irregularities in five out of seven LGAs. The Tribunal  went ahead to cancel 51,895 votes entered for Udende and 21,229 entered for Suswan.

The Court of Appeal upturned all that in its ruling on Udende’s appeal.

Benue PDP Flays Gov Alia For Victimizing Critics Of Government

0

By Ayodele Oni

People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue state has accused Governor Hyacinth Alia of victimizing perceived enemies of his administration with his latest decision to stop monthly stipends for pensioners.

The affected pensioners were said to have obtained garnishee order from the Court against the administration.

The State Chapter of the PDP in a statement claimed that “It has come to the attention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State that Governor Hyacinth Alia has threatened to remove from the pay-roll names of pensioners who have obtained garnishee orders from courts against his government.”

The statement, signed by Bemgba Iortyom

State Publicity Secretary, said “This threat of the governor, PDP learnt, was issued through his Commissioner of Justice and Public Order, Barr. Fidelis Mnyim, during a meeting with pensioners in Makurdi.

“We recall that only a few days back medical students of the Benue State University, Makurdi who had gone to Government House to peacefully air their grievances to the governor were allegedly brutalized by suspected thugs and subsequently suspended by the university authority.

“PDP firstly establishes that the protests and agitations springing across the state are largely the result of frustrations arising from the myriad of promises Governor Alia made to the people during the campaigns to turn their conditions to ‘Heaven on earth’ within just a 100 days in office.

“His threat against those elderly pensioners and the suppression of the medical students are, therefore, not only unjust and tactless, but never before witnessed in Benue, not even under military rule. since the state’s creation.

“Protests and agitations are rights of citizens which are enshrined in law and previous governors of the state handled them through civil negotiations and where the courts intervened, their judgements were complied with by the government.

“PDP is aware that students in the 90s under the aegis of the National Union of Benue State Students (NUBESS) had successfully resisted attempts by the military government to scrap the annual bursary allowance to them, and this was achieved through protests and negotiations with the then Military Administrator.

“The party also recalls that both George Akume and Gabriel Suswam during their separate times as governor had to go to the BSU campus to address protesting students who demanded to see them over their grievances.

“The garnishee orders which have drawn threat from Governor Alia were also secured against previous administrations in the state, including that of Samuel Ortom but none resorted to anger and threats.

“PDP cautions Governor Alia to refrain from intolerance and high handedness against citizens who are exercising their lawful rights in protesting against his failure to fulfill the promises he made to them during the campaigns.

“Rather than throw fits of anger and issue threats, the governor should soberly reflect over those promises he made during the campaigns, and seek forgiveness for his inability to fulfill them, as well as ask for more time.

Dele Momodu Slams Wike Over Rift With Governor Fubara, Says Rivers State Not His Property, Inheritance

0

By Akinwale Kasali

Former Presidential Candidate, Dele Momodu has taken a swipe on Minister of Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike over his face off with Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State.

The Publisher, Ovation International Magazine, lashed Wike  and asked him to stop acting as if he owns Rivers State.

Lambasting Wike in a post on his on X handle, formerly Twitter, he said Wike doesn’t own the State, neither is the State his property nor inheritance.

The Director of Strategic Communications for the Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Council added that Wike has many flaws, among which are lack of anger management, and his forgetfulness that God has been kind to him.

Speaking further, Momodu praised the former Rivers State governor for the execution of infrastructural projects under his administration, stressing that he should stop portraying to be god.

The tweets partly read, “Rivers is neither your property nor perpetual inheritance. There were governors long before you cut your teeth and there must be others after you.”

Momodu said that Wike had “one tragic and fatal flaw, and yours is lack of anger management. There are other flaws, like forgetting that God has been extremely kind to you and that you will never be God, and so you should beg God to grant you the spirit of humility and the wisdom of Solomon.”

He reminded Wike of his rise to prominence from being a Local Government Chairman in the state, to a Chief of Staff; a prequel to his ministerial appointment at the FCT, saying that he (Wike) was blessed with “divine favour.”

“From a Local Government Chairman in Rivers State to Chief of Staff, to Minister of State Education, to governor for eight years and now back to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory…I do not know anyone with your kind of divine favour.

“This should satisfy you but your insatiable hunger and thirst for power is driving you into believing that you must have your way all the time. It would have been nice if you were in private business and running your personal enterprise,” Momodu said.

He noted that Wike became “inconsolable” after he lost his presidential bid, adding that he “acted more like an opposition leader than a long-standing member of PDP.”

The tweets read further, “My dear brother, this now is the crux of the matter. You can’t eat your cake and still have it. You installed a new Governor in the PDP. You’re a Minister in APC. And you still want to maintain absolute power in PDP.”

Momodu urged Wike to allow the State Governor Sim Fubara, “to grow and be a man of his own.”

He concluded, “Please, have a quiet rethink and adjust your overbearing style a bit. Sadly, you’ve allowed Fubara to demystify you”, he tweeted.

By Ayodele Oni

The Ondo State Security Network, codenamed Amotekun Corps, has said that officers and men are combat ready to curtail activities of hoodlums during ember months.

Mr. Adetunji Adeleye, Commander, Ondo State Security Network, made this known in Akure on Wednesday during the parade of 11 suspects arrested for various crimes in the state.

Adeleye, who said the corp had commenced 2023/2024 Ember Border Patrol activities, explained that six of the suspects were caught with locally-made weapons.

According to him, some of the weapons were cut to size or long range, and this development is seen as their own way of preparing to destabilize innocent residents and commuters in Ondo State.

“We are determined to make this act of theirs impossible and we are sending this message to them and anybody planning to forment trouble during this yuletide, that it is not business as usual again.

“Our men will be deployed in all blackspots that have been observed in Ondo State, especially Akure. Our patrol vehicles will be in 24 hour basis throughout this period.

“In collaboration with other security agencies, we are determined to reduce to the barest minimum all acts of criminal activities ranging from kidnapping, shop or house breaking.

“You will recall that last year, we were able to rescue over 100 kidnapped or robbed people, but for this year’s patrol, we are ready to do more and we thank the people and ask for more support this year.”

The commander also said the ban of commercial motorcycles from 6pm to 6am, is still in force as put in place by the government, but would not affect motorcycles on essential duties.

He revealed that 20 cases of commercial motorcyclists killed and their motorcycles stolen was recorded in the last three weeks, hence it was risky to ride motorcycles in the night.

“We want to appeal to commercial motorcyclists to go and rest if they work for 12 hours so that we can identify the criminal entities.

“It is also no longer permitted for vehicles to ply the road without registration numbers, and all vehicles with tinted glass should obtain Police permit for them.

“Dealers should use dealer numbers and not stickers because all vehicles with stickers only will be impounded. These are some measures we put in place to guarantee safety of lives and properties in Ondo State.”

PDP Governors Accuse Judiciary Of Double Standard In Handling Election Petitions

By Ayodele Oni

The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Governors  Forum has faulted the judgement of the Supreme Court which validated the election of President Bola Tinubu.

The Governors from the opposition party who met in Abuja Tuesday night accused the Judiciary of double standards in handling various election petition cases.

In a communique issued at the end of its meeting, the Forum expressed concern that “while the Supreme Court has laid down precedents on pre-election issues, PDP candidates in Plateau State are being disqualified on the same grounds.”

The communiqué read by the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum Senator Bala Mohammed, urged “the Judiciary at the apex level to ensure that our jurisprudence is not distorted.

“As a Forum, we believe and re-state our faith and confidence in the judiciary to do justice in political and other cases before the Courts.”

Mohammed, who is also the Governor of Bauchi State, condemned the attempted impeachment of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, and expressed the Forum’s readiness “for a quick and just containment of the issues involved.”

He, however, welcomed the intervention of President Tinubu to bring the crises to an end.

Governor Mohammed pledged the determination of the PDP governors to remain vigilant in the struggle for democracy and good governance in the country.

He assured that the party would be repositioned and strengthened “as a viable opposition political party ready and willing to play its role as the vanguard of the Nigerian people for democracy, good governance and accountability.”

He called on the Federal Government to stabilize the naira, control inflation, stem the unemployment crises, and bring more assistance to Nigerians.

The National Working Committee (NWC) had earlier in a statement called on all actors and their supporters in the attempt to impeach the Rivers State governor, to sheathe their swords and allow for the peaceful and amicable resolution of all the issues.

The party in a statement by the National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, said it has activated its internal conflict resolution mechanisms to ensure that all matters and areas of disagreement are addressed.

It urged PDP leaders, critical stakeholders and members of the party in Rivers State to close ranks, unite and focus on the task of governance and delivery of dividends of democracy to the people.

The PDP governors’ meeting, which was the third since the new government’s inauguration last May, was attended by 10 governors and the deputy governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ossai.

The embattled Rivers State governor Siminalayi Fubara, who incidentally is the Vice Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, attended the meeting for the first time.
