Kukah Says Bread And Butter Mentality Bane Of Nigeria’s Democracy

0

By Ayodele Oni

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah, has observed that those behind the problems of Nigeria are not also safe.

According to him, the masterminds of Nigeria’s woes are, also, as unsafe as the suffering masses. He said that although every country of the world had its own problems, it took the citizens and purposeful leaders to address such challenges.

Kukah pointed out that “It is not as if we cannot use democracy to develop Nigeria; but there are certain fundamental things that must be on ground before people can appreciate democracy.

“Unless Nigeria settles the issue of ‘bread and butter mentality’, the democracy can actually look like lottery.”

Kukah made the remarks in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, in his keynote address with the theme, “The Nigerian Question: Survival of the Federation in The Throes of Increasing Economic Challenges”, at the 3rd Annual National Public Lecture of an Online Newspaper.

The Cleric also expressed pity on Nigerians who, because of many troubles, hardly travel out of their immediate environments.

“It is not as if we cannot use democracy to develop Nigeria, but there are certain fundamental things that must be on ground before people can appreciate democracy. Unless Nigeria settles the issue of ‘bread and butter mentality’, the democracy can actually look like lottery.

“The good thing about Nigeria is that everybody knows what the problems are and the people who are responsible for the problems are not also safe, they too do not know peace.

“Nigerians talk about other countries, I feel sorry for many Nigerians who, because of many troubles, hardly travel out of their immediate environments, not to talk about traveling to other parts of Africa or other parts of the world.

“Though every country has its own problems, the challenge before us in Nigeria is: what do we want, obviously, can we democratize and develop our nation?

“It is a very difficult question to answer, because what we called the civilized world today is the last 200 years of exploitation of Africa that help to build these nations.

“So we are imagining it ourselves, why are we not like other people, we are not like others because every nation has to find its own navigational truth for development.”

As part of efforts to decongest the crowded Correctional Centers in Nigeria, the Federal Government is set to raise the sum of N500 million from private individuals and organisations to pay fines for 4000 inmates languishing in the various Correctional Centres.

The Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo,  disclosed that a whooping sum of N500m fines placed on over 4000 inmates is being raised for payment by the Federal Government.

The Minister had recently disclosed the plan by the Government to decongest the Correctional Centers through the release of people who are incarcerated due to inability to pay court fines.

Tunji-Ojo, in a chat on Saturday, explained that he had reached out to private companies and organisations to channel their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in this direction with the aim of raising the fund.

He noted that the Government would not spend a dime to decongest Correctional facilities, assuring that the money, when raised, will be properly expended on payment of the fines.

“Border security and Correctional Centres’ reform are our major priorities for now. That is why we are about to reach the far end of raising N500m to pay fines placed on 4000 inmates.

“We have reached out to private organisations and companies to help raise the funds as part of their Corporate Social Responsibilities and I am sure this will be sorted in a short time.”

By Akinwale Kasali

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has faced series of criticism over the Stop and Search Exercise going on in Admiralty Way, Lekki, Lagos, by its operatives.

Comedian, Bright Okocha, popularly known as Basketmouth had called out the Agency for embarking on such exercise on his X handle, formerly known as Twitter.

Responding, the agency revealed that the stop-and-search exercise was to “protect residents from the activities of drug dealers and disrupt supply chain of illicit substances.”

The comedian had tweeted late Friday, “Are you people  aware of the stop and search going on currently on Admiralty Way in LEKKI by members of your force? #ndlea_nigeria.”

The response on NDLEA’s X page on Saturday read, “Thanks #basket_mouth. The men are on authorized duty based on intelligence, their presence there is not a regular occurrence.

“It’s part of efforts to protect residents from the activities of drug dealers and disrupt supply chain of illicit substances. The cooperation of all is key.”

Former Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade, failed in his bid to retire to the Senate, finally, dashed. The Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, on Saturday, dismissed his appeal which challenged his defeat during the February 25 Senatorial Election.

The Court affirmed Senator Jarigbe Jarigbe of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as the winner of the Cross River North Senatorial District election.

Ayade of the All Progressives Congress, APC, had petitioned the Court,  which in its dismissal of his appeal, awarded  the sum of  N500,000 against him, in favour of the incumbent Senator.

Before Ayade became the Governor of Cross River State, he was in the Senate between 2011 and 2015. But in his bid to go back after his eight-year tenure as Governor, he lost by polling 56, 595 votes to Jarigbe’s  76,145 votes.

Earlier in September, the Cross River State National Assembly Election Petitions sitting in Calabar had declared Jarigbe as the winner of the February 25, Senatorial District Election and dismissed Ayade’s petition for lack of merit.

In the five-hour judgment, the Chairman, Hon. Justice M. A. Sambo, said the petitioners (Ayade and APC) failed to prove their case substantially.

Uzodimma to Mbaise Nation: “Vote For Me, I Won’t Disappoint You”

0

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has assured the Mbaise Nation that he will not disappoint their reasonable expectation if they massively cast their ballot for him in the November 11 governorship election.

Addressing the leadership of Ezuruezu Mbaise and other political and business leaders from the area who came to parley with him at the Sam Mbakwe Executive Council  Chamber on Thursday night, Governor Uzodimma reaffirmed his love for the people of Mbaise Nation.

“I have no issue with Mbaise Nation. I will not have any issue and that cannot happen,” Governor Uzodimma told the leaders.

The Governor reminded the Ezuruezu leadership that they have a responsibility to help the entire Mbaise Nation from their vantage positions, urging the body’s executive to take a second look at the notion that Ezuruezu is apolitical.

“I you are really interested in helping your people you must play politics. Ezuruezu must help the people by using what they have to get what they need. We can’t pretend about it. We will work together,” Governor Uzodimma told them.

The Governor reminded the Mbaise leaders on the need to be united, saying, “leadership is better if you are united. We have a responsibility to work as brothers and sisters. Form a formidable front and take advantage of your strength.”

Governor Uzodimma challenged his guests  to throw their weight behind his re-election agenda and the Charter of Equity with their bloc votes on November 11, noting that the bargaining power that lies in their bloc votes for his re-election can speak volume.

“If you vote for me, I will not disappoint you,” Governor Uzodimma assured.

On the complaints by Ezuruezu leadership about poor state of roads infrastructure in Mbaise Nation, the Governor promised that his administration is determined to fix all bad roads in Imo State. “I have sufficient information why Imo State must work and by the grace of God, Imo State must work.”

The Governor regretted that most of the local contractors he engaged to work on the rural roads in Mbaise and other parts of Imo State reneged on their promise and assured that efforts are in top gear to redress the situation. He also promised to find out the reason for the stoppage of an ongoing NDDC road project in Mbaise.

Earlier in his remarks, the President General of Ezuruezu Mbaise, Surveyor Joe Anosike thanked the Governor for granting them audience, and for all he has done for the Mbaise Nation in particular and Imo State in general since assumption of office.

He told the Governor that though the body is apolitical, most of the members are ardent supporters of his administration who are working so hard to ensure his victory at the polls on November 11.

While thanking the Governor for intervening on the Owerri-Mbaise-Obowo-Umuahia road, Anosike urged him to come to the aid of the people living on the corridor of Aba branch to Ngor Okpala, saying that the road which traverses five local government areas in Imo State needs his immediate attention, having broken down completely.

Other areas where Ezuruezu leadership sought the intervention of the Governor include the College of Midwifery, Aboh Mbaise, the return of the Imo State University Campus to Mbaise as originally conceived, the local roads in the area, among others.

He assured the Governor of their willingness to partner with him in the interest of the people and the State.

Senator Chris Anyanwu in her opening remarks, reminded the Governor that the Mbaise people are very proud of his achievements and have come not just to express it but to tell him that they are behind him on his re-election.

Sen Anyanwu noted that the parley with the leadership of Ezuruezu Mbaise and others was necessary to reaffirm the love they share with the Governor whom she noted, has so many friends in Mbaise. She said Mbaise Nation believes in the Charter of Equity and will work for its realisation.

Other key leaders from Mbaise who spoke: former Deputy Governor of Imo State, Chief Mrs Ada Okwuonu,  Chief S. Alozie (SAN) and former Permanent Secretary FCT, High Chief John Chukwu, all expressed the commitment of the Mbaise Nation to supporting the government of Governor Uzodimma and to work for his re-election.

They all aligned themselves with the demands made of the Governor by the Ezuruezu leadership, including conceding power to Owerri zone after his second tenure, and more importantly, to look the direction of Mbaise Nation where they said he will not have problems with highly qualified persons to succeed him.

Among those who joined in the parley with the Governor are the Chairman of ABC Transport, Mr. Frank Nneji, People’s Democratic Party chieftain in Ahiazu Mbaise, Dr. Sha Azu Okorie, former Ezuruezu Mbaise President General, Barr. CY. Anyanwu, former Speaker Imo State House of Assembly, Rt.Hon Godfrey Dikeocha, Chief Tony Onu, Chief Christaugunus Okoro, to name but a few.

Chairman of Ezinihitte Mbaise Council of Traditional rulers, HRH, Eze Ositadinma Nwokocha and his colleague for Aboh Mbaise, HRH Eze Marxillinus Nwaturuocha were also in attendance.

Deputy Governor of Imo State, Prof Placid Njoku, Secretary to Government of Imo State, Chief Cosmos Iwu, Chief of Staff, Barr Nnamdi Anyaehie, Chief Political Adviser/Head of Political Bureau to the Governor, Barr Enyinnaya Onuegbu and other top government officials witnessed the meeting.

Nigeria’s Minister For Power, Adedayo Adelabu, on Friday night, November, 3, 2023, survived a plane crash.

The Minister, a native of Oyo  State, was on board a private jet which he boarded in Abuja, to Ibadan, but the plane crash-landed in Ibadan, off the runway of Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport.

Even though the names of the other passengers on board have not been made public, aside from a couple of the Minister’s Aides,  it is suspected that there were, also, a couple of top Federal Government Officials. There were about souls on board, excluding  the crew members.

It is not known if the Minister was on an official or private visit to his home State, the private jet, HS25B, operated by Flint Aero, missed the runway, crash-landed, and ended up in the bush.

The flight took off from Abuja at 6.41pm, and crash-landed at 7.21 pm after it had been cleared by by Air Traffic Controllers for an RNAV approach to Runway 22. On landing, it skidded off the runway, and ended in the bush. And, even though there was very substantial damage to the airplane, no fatality was recorded.

An investigation into the mishap has been kicked off by the Nigerian Safety Investigative Bureau, NSIB.

Most Nigerian big men and women, including top Government Officials, and especially, State Governors, ignore commercial planes and prefer the luxury of privately owned jets to the former.

0

Governor Hope Uzodimma has said that Imo State owes a lot of gratitude to the late first civilian Governor of Imo State, Chief Sam Onunaka Mbakwe, noting that the former Governor made huge sacrifices which the people cannot repay.

Governor Uzodimma spoke at the weekend while being conferred with the Beacon of Hope for Good Governance award by the family of late Chief Mbakwe at the Rockview Hotel Owerri.

The award was conferred on Governor Uzodimma by late Chief Mbakwe’s heir apparent Engr Alex Mbakwe, under the platform of  Chief Sam Mbakwe Leadership  Award 2023.

Receiving the award, Governor Uzodimma expressed gratitude to the family of the late sage for the honour and noted that Chief Mbakwe led a sacrificial life for Imo State and the Igbos, and that the love he showed to the people cannot be measured.

He said late Chief Mbakwe was almost living in penury when he left office because he was completely engrossed in the activities that would lead to good of the people.

The Governor said that he is not surprised that many years after the passing of late Chief Mbakwe, he still remains a reference point for everything good to be copied by those in positions of authority who crave for good governance in public service.

He said he will forever cherish the honour done him by the late Chief Mbakwe’s family.

He described the award given to the Governor as fitting and appropriate.

In the same vein, the Imo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. COC Akaolisa, a student of the Faculty of Law, Imo State University which Mbakwe established in 1981, and the former Speaker of Imo State and Secretary General of Imo State Council of Elders, Rt Hon. Imo: Court Issues Fresh Order Restraining NLC  From Further Strike

NLC Protest

The National Industrial Court in Owerri has issued a fresh  interim injunction restraining  the organised Labour from embarking on any kind of strike in Imo state until further notice.

The Court warned against the disobedience of its order, saying that it would attract consequences.

Justice  N C S Ogbuanya gave the order  last Friday after hearing the submissions of  counsels to both parties that they  were yet to reach a settlement on their dispute.

The defendants are Nigeria Labour Congress and the secretary General,  Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja and the Trade Union Congress and its secretary General, Comrade Nuhu Toro.

In the suit No NICN/ OW/41/2023, the Attorney General of Imo State and the Imo State Government  are claimants.

The court held that in considering the motion for interlocutory injunction by the claimants,   after hearing from both counsels, it has reserved November 30,2023 for the ruling.

The court further held thus: ” Considering the court’ s duty to ensure that Labour dispute and related disagreements between the parties are not allowed to escalate and adversely affect the interests and well-being of the citizenry and third parties who are not involved in the Labour dispute already submitted for adjudication  in the pending suit in the court”, it was necessary for the parties to hold the peace till the next adjourned date.

” Parties are hereby  directed to be mindful  of consequences of disobedience of extant court order  in  the pending suit before the court “, it further ordered.

With the order, the current strike action in Imo state by a section of labour ,especially EEDC,is illegal.

The Court adjourned the matter to November, 30,2023  for ruling on the interlocutory injunction filed by the claimants.

Ajaero: Our Demands From Imo Government, IGP, By NLC, TUC

0

By Gideon Njoku

Following the face-off in Owerri between the Organised Labour and the Imo State Police Command which led to the brutalisation of the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero, and some others, the NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, have issued a six-point demand to the Imo State Government and the Inspector General of Police for peace to reign.

The Organized Labour wants the demands met before November 8, 2023, or it would embark on an indefinite strike action.

Trouble started on November, 1, 2023, when Ajaero and other Labour Leaders stormed Owerri to organise a protest against the State Government over alleged sundry issues, including, none payment of salaries, an allegation, among others, which the State Government strongly denies,  insisting it was not owing salaries to any legal worker. Meaning that only ghost and fraudulent workers would complain.

However, while the Leaders of the NLC were at the State Secretariat, putting finishing touches to the modalities of the protest,  they were pounced upon, allegedly, by the Police. Ajaero, in particular, was badly manhandled, resulting in his being rushed to two hospitals – Police Hospital and the Federal Medical Centre, FMC – over the severe injuries he sustained, especially, in the eye and head areas.

The State Government vehemently denies a hand in Ajaero’s ordeal, and so does the Imo State Police Command which said its men, contrary to reports, neither arrested Ajaero nor detained him. Instead, it claimed in a Press Statement, its men took Ajaero into protective custody, and saved him from being lynched by a mob. The Command did not say who and who made up the mob, or why nobody was arrested on the spot.

The NLC and the TUC insist that both the State Government and the Police Command were responsible for the brutalization of their leaders, and have served a six-point demand on the Imo State Government and the Inspector General of Police. They want positive action taken on their demands or be faced with industrial action with effect from November 8, 2023.

For the records, the Governorship Election in Imo State, like that of Kogi and Bayelsa States, is scheduled for November 11, 2023. Any industrial action, therefore, could affect the Imo election.

Following are the six demands.

■Investigation and deployment out of Imo State the Commissioner of Police Mr. Ahmed Barde for his unprofessional conduct

■Sack of the Area Commander and his men who supervised the beating and brutalisation of the NLC President

■Arrest and prosecution of SA Special Duties in Imo State, Mr. Nwaneri Chinasa

Immediate.

■Independent and thorough medical and professional examination of the NLC president as a result of physical injuries inflicted on him.

■Medical treatment of journalists and other workers who were maltreated and in the course of doing their jobs at the NLC secretariat in Imo State and all properties stolen or damaged be restored.

■ Implementation of all outstanding industrial relations issues previously agreed with the Imo State Government.

The Organized Labour, also, added:

“We further resolved that in the event that the State Government fails to comply with any of the stated demands, NLC, TUC and other affiliate members will no longer guarantee industrial peace in Nigeria, beginning November, 8th, 2023”

Nigeria’s Supermen Work For Themselves, Not For The Masses – Edo Deputy Governor

0
Philip Shuaibu - Edo Deputy Governor

By Ayodele Oni

Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has said that the sustainability of Nigeria’s democracy is hinged on the rule of law.

Speaking at a Leadership Summit of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), in Benin, Shaibu pointed out “that we must make sure that our personal sentiments do not influence our official conduct as public servants.

“Today, we have supermen as against strong institutions. When we have supermen, they work for themselves. When you have strong Institutions, it works for everybody.

“What we need to sustain democracy is to obey the rule of law, where the Inspector-General of Police can work without being influenced.

“Where a University Vice Chancellor will not be controlled by the President/Governor; where the Local Government Chairman will not be controlled by the Executive because there’s an account joining the two Tiers of Government. Until  and except this is addressed, Nigeria will not move forward.”

The forum was organized by the Office of the NANS Vice President Inter-Campus Affairs with the theme: “Student Unionism and a Quest for a Better Society”, aimed at ‘fostering a better relationship within higher institutions in Edo.’

Shaibu, a former President of NANS, charged the students to regard themselves as leaders of today and not tomorrow and not to exercise fear in the course of their struggle for better society.

“In my address, as a keynote speaker, I charged the students to work hard without fear of intimidation by the ‘strong men’ in Nigeria for the sustenance of the nation’s democracy, while admonishing them to be diligent, focused and determined in pushing for the growth and development of the country.

“As a former President of NANS, I narrated my journey into students’ unionism and my contributions to the emergence of democracy in Nigeria, as a way of encouraging and impacting the students.

“I recall how I was tortured by the military for leading the NANS Zone C “Abacha Must Go” rally, and detained in Gashua prison in now Zamfara State for one month, until I was released following a report by a Journalist called Jacob, who published my detention story.

“I told my listening audience that we fought the Military because we wanted a Government of the people, by the people and for the people.

“We wanted an ear-giving Government; one that is there by the power of the people. We, young and vibrant activists back then, didn’t give the Military rest.

“Sadly, some of our colleagues didn’t survive it, some of them died, some brutalized and some till today are on wheelchairs. But the good thing is that their spirit was not killed.

“They are always interested in the Nigeria that will be an egalitarian country. I sustained injuries while under severe torture in one of my sojourns in detention and it led to my being operated on for appendicitis.

“I reminded them that the last election was a test case for the youths – whether conscious of their future – they all came out to vote, while charging them not be weary regardless of what happened.

“I told the students that they are the leaders of today, and challenged them to stop paying attention to those telling them that youths are the leader of tomorrow; that tomorrow begins today.”
