Super Eagles

By Akinwale Kasali

For the second time in  three days, the Super Eagles of Nigeria has disappointed its teeming fans by registering another 1-1 draw with the Warriors of Zimbabwe in Butare, Rwanda.

The Coach Jose Peseiro team waa shambolic against the Crocodiles of Lesotho in their first match and has, again,  played another 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe.

Peseiro made five changes in the starting line that played against Lesotho at the Godswill Obot Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.  Nathan Tella made his debut, while Bruno Onyemaechi, Ola Aina, Joe Aribo, Terem Moffi and Moses Simon were given the nod to start the match.

Sadly, the Super Eagles were behind in less than 27th minutes into the match as Walter Musona scored for the Zimbabweans.

The Zimbabweans didn’t look back after registering the first goal. They pushed further to get the second goal but met a resilient Super Eagles defense, spearheaded by Oluwasemilogo Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, Onyemaechi and Aina.

Coach Peseiro made three changes on the resumption of the second half, with Kelechi Iheanacho, Victor Okoh Boniface and Bright Osayi Samuel coming in for Tella, Aina and Onyeka.

In the 67th minute, Iheanacho got the equalizer for the Super Eagles with an assist from Simon.

After the equalizer, Nigeria pushed further to get the winner but it proved abortive.

With the draw, Nigeria remains on two Points alongside Zimbabwe.

Other teams in the Group are yet to play.

Edo: I’m In the Gov Race, Shuaibu Says In Defiance to Obaseki

0

The Deputy Governor of Edo state, Phillip Shuaibu says he has the backing of the people of the state to contest next year’s governorship election in the state.

Nobody can stop me, he said, in utter defiance to his boss’ Governor Godwin Obaseki indisposition to his ambition to succeed him.

Since the deputy governor made known his ambition to contest the highest office in the state, a fight has ensued between the two former political allies as Governor Obaseki has said clearly that Phillip does not have his support.

The disagreement climaxed in September when the governor ordered his deputy’s office to be relocated out of the government house to an obscure environment in the state. The governor later sacked Shuaibu’s media aides, in what political analysts have described as an overkill in his efforts to punish his deputy.

In spite of the Governor Obaseki’s obvious animosity towards his ambition, Shuaibu said the people of the state will back him to contest, and he’s not looking back.

He spoke to journalists in Abuja on Sunday, stressing that he’s most qualified to run for the state’s highest office, adding that he has the backing of his people to run.

The deputy governor said no agreement has been reached in his party, the PDP, to zone the ticket to any part of the state.

This, analysts said, was in response to the assertion of Governor Obaseki that the ticket should not be zoned to Edo North where his deputy hails from.

Part of what Shuaibu said at the parley: “There is no convention in Edo State on the issue of zoning, politically, traditionally, or at conferences where we met to say this is how we want to have our politics zoned.

‘At the same time, I am an advocate of fairness and equity but whoever is talking about fairness and equity must come with clean hands.

“If you check the structures of those that have been governors in Edo State, there is nowhere you will see the issue of zoning. We had four Governors from Edo South, two from Edo Central and only one from Edo North. When you look at the PDP, the party has never given its Governorship ticket to any candidate from Edo North.

“If I get the ticket of the PDP, I will be the first candidate of the PDP from Edo North since 1999.

Anyhow you look at it, equity and fairness show that Edo North should produce the next governor. When people want to whip up sentiments out of ignorance and perceived incompetence, they whip up ethnic and religious sentiments.

“If I become governor, I won’t be governor of Afenmai. I will be Governor of Edo State. Edo people are in dire need of practical governance and we cannot afford to experiment again with someone who does not understand the politics and needs of Edo State.

“Everywhere including the international scene, people are clamouring that governments should not be pushing projects that are not needed. So, we need to do Needs assessment. You cannot know the needs of the people when you don’t live with them.

“For me, competence and experience should be the watchword. Who is competent, more experienced and who will hit the ground running from day one if he becomes governor? Are we going to experiment with a new person again and the person will spend the first four years learning on the job and the next four years trying to embezzle and set up businesses in the name of consolidating on his first term?

“We need a governor that from the day he is sworn in, he will hit the ground running. Someone who knows that today, you cannot travel from Jattu to Benin without spending a minimum of three to four hours. We need someone whose priority would be how to collaborate with the Federal Government on this road so that one can go to Benin from Jattu within one hour, twenty minutes.

“I have been in the system. I understand the debt profile of Edo State and I know where I can get funding to put up structures in the state. I am not coming to learn on the job. I am not coming to experiment.

“The problem we have had in the system is that we have had too many seminars, workshops and seminars but there is no time to implement the outcome of these seminars.

“I saw when Osunbor was governor, I saw when Oshiomhole was governor, I worked with Obaseki as governor. I know the mistakes of them all. I also know the things that were beneficial to Edo State that Osunbor, Oshiomhole and Obaseki did.

“We will amplify the good things and not repeat the mistakes. You can only do this if you are a part of the system. This is the experience I am brining on board.”

Shaibu also insisted that he will contest the election under the PDP, noting that his consultations are still ongoing.

“I am still consulting and in the coming days, the outcome of my consultation will be made public. My first option is PDP, second option is PDP and the third is PDP.

“PDP wants to win the election and it must win the election, the party needs to listen to the voice of the people. I am not contesting the election because of Philip Shaibu.

“I am contesting because Edo people say I should come out. If they are saying I should come out, their dictates is what I will follow. I have told them that I am a member of the PDP and I am sure that I will get the PDP ticket. They are mobilising for me to get the ticket.

“They have told me some parties I should not go to but I won’t reveal that to you now. They have told me a particular party I must not go to. I am a street man and even the governor will attest to the fact that I always preach the street message. I bring the street perspective to all our conversations. If I get the PDP ticket, the people will see my street credibility.”

Meanwhile, analysts told the magazine that it would be almost impossible for Shuaibu to contest under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as long as the governor is in charge of the party. Obaseki, the magazine recalled accused his deputy of planning to go to another party to achieve his ambition.

Appeal Court Sacks Plateau Gov Mutfwang, Orders INEC To Withdraw Certificate Of Return

Caleb Mutfwang - Plateau state Governor

By Ayodele Oni

The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, has sacked the Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang.

The Court also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to him.

In her ruling on Sunday, the lead Justice, Elfrieda Williams-Dawodu, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue a Certificate of Return to the candidate of the All Progressive Congress, (APC) Nentawe Goshwe.

Justice Williams-Dawodu set aside the judgment of the Tribunal which affirmed the election of Governor Mutfwang, describing it as highly incompetent.

According to the Court, the decision of the tribunal to dismiss the petition filed by the APC and its candidate on the ground that the duo had no business meddling in the affairs of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on which platform Mutfwang was elected is in breach of Section 177 of the 1999 Constitution as amended and Section 134 (C) of the Electoral Act.

The Court also held that contrary to the decision of the tribunal that the issues contained in the petition filed by the appellants were pre-election matters, they were both pre-election and post-election matters and could not have been deemed status barred.

Jonathan, Good Example Of What Nigerian Leader Should Be – Tinubu Celebrates GEJ On 66th Birthday

By Ayodele Oni

President Bola Tinubu has advised leaders aspiring to make a difference to emulate former President Goodluck Jonathan’s wisdom, foresight, and patriotism.

This was contained in the president congratulatory message to  Goodluck Jonathan, a former president, on his 66th birthday.

In a statement released on Sunday by Ajuri Ngelale, special adviser on media and publicity, Tinubu celebrated the former president for his unique demonstration of statesmanship and for his distinguishing achievement as a leader.

He said Jonathan gave Nigeria and Africa a pride of place in democratic lore by “upending the vitiating paradigm of those who seek to hold onto power by all means.

“President Tinubu shares the joyous occasion with one of our icons of democracy, whose humility continues to inspire hope for good governance in the country and on the continent.

“The President believes the former President possesses a distinguished profile on leadership, rising up the ladder as Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice-President and President, and now championing the cause of peace in Africa by bringing together and counselling leaders on harmonious co-existence for the benefit of the people they serve.

The President commends former President Jonathan for committing himself to the service of humanity and to strengthening democratic institutions, exemplified by his relentless peace missions and advocacy of non-violence in the peaceful transition of power across the African continent.”

He wished the former president and Patience, his wife, sustained good health.

Abdulsalami Abubakar Urges Tinubu To Facilitate New Minimum Wage, Says N30,000 Unacceptable

Former Military Head of State, and Chairman National Peace Committee,  Abdusalami Abubakar, has described as impractical and unacceptable the current N30,000 minimum wage, given the current state of the country.

Abubakar urged President Bola Tinubu, governors, and other politicians to contemplate raising the minimum wage in light of the ongoing hardships in the nation.

He spoke at a maiden Peace, Unity, and Reconciliation summit organized by the Taraba state Independent Peace Committee, in Jalingo.

Represented by Rev Fr Atta Barkindo, the Head of the Secretariat, National Peace Committee, Abdusalami argued that Nigeria cannot thrive without peace, and the prevailing suffering is too much to bear.

The summit was in collaboration with the Kukah Centre, the United Nations, UNESCO, and other partners.

“The suffering in this country is too much. N30,000 as a monthly salary is unacceptable anywhere. So, we are pleading with the politicians from the president to the state governors to the commissioners, please, live up to the social contract you have signed with the people and let us begin to enjoy the dividends of democracy.”

He expressed disapproval of the off-cycle governorship elections in Bayelsa, Kogi, and Imo states.

”What is really wrong with us Nigerians? We just came from Kogi, Bayelsa and Imo states as the peace committee to witness and support the peaceful, credible, inclusive, and fair electoral process, but it is shocking what we saw.

“We must treat Nigerians equally if we want Nigeria and Taraba State to survive. No religion is superior to the other, no tribe is superior to the other, and no class is superior to the other.

“We are all equal human beings looking for the same stake in Taraba. Let us dialogue and see how we can bring a solution.

”I wish and I hope the politicians were here, we have done everything, and is left for the politicians to deliver.”

Provide Adequate Rehabilitation Programmes For Freed Inmates – Expert

Dr. Nathaniel Oyinloye

By Ayodele Oni

Dr. Nathaniel Oyinloye, Founder, Hospital and Prison Welfare Initiative (HPWI), has advised the federal government to make adequate provision for rehabilitation for freed inmates of Correctional Centres in the country.

Reacting to the release of over 4000 inmates from Correctional Centres by the Federal Ministry of Interior at the weekend after payment of their fines, Oyinloye said former inmates in the country are confronted with many challenges upon their release.

He explained that “I am not making generalizations about the experiences of former inmates in Nigeria or any other country, as each individual’s experience is unique and can be influenced by a variety of factors.

“However, there are several challenges that many former inmates in Nigeria may face upon their release, which can make it difficult for them to reintegrate into society and lead productive lives.

“These challenges can include:Insufficient Rehabilitation Programmes: Without proper post-prison support, many inmates may lack access to rehabilitation programmes, hindering their ability to reintegrate into society and potentially increasing the likelihood of reoffending.

“Increased Risk of Recidivism: Without proper support, released prisoners may struggle to reintegrate into society, increasing the risk of relapse into criminal behavior.

“The Nigerian criminal justice system has been criticized for its high rate of recidivism, which can make it difficult for former inmates to break the cycle of incarceration and reintegrate into society.”

He also listed unemployment challenges such as insufficient support for employment opportunities which may lead to high unemployment rates among released inmates, making them more susceptible to resorting to illegal activities for survival.

“Strain on Community Resources: Releasing a large number of individuals without adequate support infrastructure could strain community resources, including social services, employment agencies, and housing assistance.

“Potential for Social Unrest: If released inmates face challenges in adapting to civilian life, there is a risk of social unrest, as frustrated individuals may engage in criminal activities out of desperation.

“Public Safety Concerns: Inadequate support increases the likelihood of released individuals committing new offenses, posing a threat to public safety and community well-being.”

Gov Adeleke Denies Removing Osun Chief Judge

Ademola Adeleke sworn in as Governor of Osun State

By Ayodele Oni

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has  denied reports that he removed the Chief Judge and appointed an Acting Chief Judge for the state.

The Governor explained that what he did was that he only forwarded the resolution of the House of Assembly and recommendation for an Acting appointment to the Chief Justice of the Federation for decision and action.

This was contained in a statement on Sunday, signed on behalf of the Governor by the Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi.

The statement reads : “With all sense of responsibility, it is important to  set the records straight that Governor Adeleke has only duly notified the Chief Justice as the Chairman of the National Judicial Council (NJC) in writing about the  resolutions of the House of Assembly following  series of petitions made against the sitting Chief Judge of Osun State.

“In the communication, Mr Governor intimated the CJN of the recommendation of the House that the Chief Judge should step aside and included his own submission for an acting appointment to fill the vacuum, while the NJC reviews and decides on the petition.

“To that end, the Governor in the same letter recommended to the CJN, the appointment of the most senior judicial officer, Hon.Justice Olayinka David Afolabi for thorough consideration and further processing by the same NJC through the CJN.

“We urge the public to note that while the  House of Assembly recommended the appointment of a replacement to the Governor in its resolution, the Governor however toed the line of law by writing  the CJN on the entire development and submitting all materials for NJC as mandated national agency.

“We therefore wish to state categorically  that  Governor Adeleke has not appointed any judicial official as Acting Chief Judge and nobody has been sworn  as Acting Chief Judge of Osun state.

“Governor Adeleke is a man of due process and rule of law with a deep level of respect for the bar and the bench, the NJC and the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“We assure the public that Mr Governor is fully aware of the limit of his powers, as well as the responsibilities of the various agencies of government and will therefore not act in any way to violate the constitution and rule of law.”

The removal of the Chief Judge and the appointment of another in an Acting capacity has met with strong criticisms and rejection. For starters, the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, has given notice that it would not recognize the Acting Chief Judge.
