Catholic Priest Rap€s, Impregnates Minor, Remanded In Prison Custody, FCC Jones Laments

0

By Charles Igbo

A Roman Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Stephen Nwaigwe, has, like the Biblical Adam, eaten the forbidden fruit which he swore before God and man not to partake of.

For that sacrilegious act, he is cooling his feet inside a cell in a Correctional Centre in Anambra State.

Fr. Nwaigwe is accused of r€ping and impregnating a minor whose education he promised to sponsor. The Priest met the minor as a 14 year old when he was invited to a religious program at  St Albert The Great Catholic Church Parish, Obosi, Anambra State.

Fr. Nwaigwe took the minor to cook for him and promised to sponsor her education. Her parents were  excited as they thought the Rev. Fr. would guide her spiritually in the narrow righteous path. The icing on the cake, for them, was the promise to sponsor their daughter’s education. But all that turned out to be fake promises, empty.

Instead of guiding her spiritually, Fr. Wigwe allegedly forcefully guided  the minor into  becoming his bedmate as soon as he took her home. She continued to, on the Priest’s insistence, warm his bed. Then, at 17 years,  she became pregnant.

As a cover-up, and to take her away from prying eyes, the Priest decided to ferry the minor to his brother and wife who live in Benin City, Edo State.

The minor was a loser all round. When it was time for her to put to bed, she was taken to a traditional birth place in Benin, not to a proper hospital. When she put to bed, she was denied the joy of holding her baby. She was told that the baby died. And when she asked to see the corpse of her baby, that was denied her, as she was denied the closure of seeing the grave too.

The story which she told  the minor to tell was that she was gang-r€ped and so,  got pregnant. It is a tale the minor rubbished, and refused to tell. When asked by the Court if she was gang-r€ped, the minor said she has never had a relationship with anybody except the Rev. Fr. who continued to force himself on her. She revealed that it was the Priest who tried to coerce her to say she was gang-raXed while he was taking her to Benin City.

Hauled before a Chief Magistrate’s Court for Sexual and Gender-based Violence, the Priest’s Counsel asked for his bail on November 20, 2023. But the Police Prosecutor protested vehemently against it. He said Rev. Fr Wigwe would jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Genevieve Osakwe, ordered that the Rev. Fr. be remanded at  the Correctional Centre, Awka, and asked him to proceed to a High Court to ask for bail. She adjourned the case to December 6, 2023.

FCC  JONES  ONWUASOANYA LAMENTS

But in a write-up where he condemned Rev. Fr. Nwaigwe’s alleged sacrilege,  FCC Jones Onwuasoanya, a socio-political commentator, lamented:

“Reverend Father Stephen Nwaigwe is one of those priests who claim to be charismatic miracle workers and who go from one parish to the other, and from communities to another;  praying, breaking yokes, performing miracles and healing incurable sicknesses, through the power of the Most High. Because they wear cloaks of holiness and declare the name of Jesus Christ, they always have a multitude of believers and salvation seekers fawning towards them.

“While a few good and genuine Men of God go about converting souls to Christ and preparing them for a place in Heaven or Paradise on Earth, Father Stephen and his ilk go about using the name of our Lord to lure the unsuspecting into unholy acts and destroying many innocent people, while extorting the gullible and those desperate for quick-fixes.

“So in a church in Obosi Anambra State, after hosting one of those dramatic shows they present as crusades, adoration or whatever name each chooses to call his, a beautiful 14 year old innocent girl caught his fancy. He met the family and promised to become the little angel’s spiritual mentor, while undertaking to cater for her education and other needs of hers. Who would decline such an offer, especially when it came from a “spirit-filled” Priest? The little girl’s family were grateful to Father Stephen and glorified God for bringing him their way.

“Of all the parishioners and visitors that attended his adoration program at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church,Obosi, the family of this little 14 year old girl counted it a good fortune that their daughter was singled out for mentorship by Father Stephen Nwaigwe. They might have heard that Father Stephen was expelled by the Two Hearts of Love Congregation (Ugwu Nso) and sanctioned by the Catholic Church for acts unbecoming of his priestly calling. But in our part of the world, sanctions are largely understood as persecution and when people signed to particular professions are urged to keep to their oaths, it could be seen as asking for too much. It had even been alleged that Bishops are envious of their priests, for making too much money or becoming too popular. Is a priest even supposed to make money? We will talk about this at other times.

“Father Stephen took this beautiful girl whose name is being kept away deliberately. He took her in and made her his cook and maid. That wouldn’t have been a big problem, because we don’t care so much about exploiting children and even adults, as long as it is done by a man wearing an alb. Anyone who looked closer would have seen through the frightful eyes of that 14 year old girl that she was cooking something more delicious than mere soup and oatmeal for Padre. But, who would dare ask?

“Any good set of eyes connected to a healthy brain would have easily seen through the girl’s eyes and uneasiness that her innocence had been stolen and that a regular and illegal drilling was going on, that a childhood had been lost and maybe, a life. But, the Priest is called by God, and is beyond censure by mere mortals. So, the girl had to bear her chains, sometimes with forced smiles and maybe, a quiet belief imbued in her by the pervert priest that the sexual exploitation was for her own good.

“So our dear Padre continued to drill the unripe oil well for three years, until our little sister became pregnant. She told him that her body had changed, that a seed was growing in her. The incorrigible son of the Devil in vestments, not done with exploiting a child given to his care in trust, designed in his heart a grievous evil against the unborn child.

“Like his ilk, Father Stephen relished the enjoyment of a little girl’s bosom, but wouldn’t want to have anything to do with the responsibility that comes with it, so he schemed with a family, who might be ignorant of Father Stephen’s atrocities against the innocent girl or are his usual accomplices, for the girl was told to tell everyone who asked her in Benin that she was gang-raped. After carrying the baby to term, she was taken to a local attendant who delivered her of the baby, but told her that it was a stillbirth. All entreaties to, at least, hold the cold bundle, to show for her years of pain and enslavement fell on deaf ears.

“Thank God for law and order. It works when it wants to work. Father Stephen pleaded that he is sick, that he should be allowed to go home and be reporting to court or to the Police to plead his “innocence” but our dear Magistrate Genevieve Osakwe, took the side of the Police. She understands that the best deterrence against crime is justice. So, she asked that the errant priest be remanded in prison, unfortunately, with no hard labour yet. Maybe,we will have a kind judge at the court, who will not waste time in sentencing him to a lifetime of pains and solitary confinement. Nothing could pay for the exploitation he put this innocent girl through and for whatever he might have done to the newborn.

“To the many Father Stephens still on the loose; when you are called, be a shepherd, not a wolf.”

For the records, Rev. Fr. Nwaigwe was among the Priests expelled by a popular Catholic faith-based Religious Congregation in Orlu, Imo State, Two Hearts of Love Congregation, in 2018, for alleged misconduct inimical to the image of the Order.

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged the World Bank to stop granting loan facilities to States in Nigeria.

SERAP also called on the World Bank President, Mr Ajay Banga “to promptly, transparently and effectively conduct investigation into spending of loans and other facilities by the country’s 36 state governors.

SERAP urged the Bank to “suspend further applications for loans and any other funding to the 36 states until these states are able to satisfactorily explain details of spending of loans and other facilities obtained from the Bank and its partners.”

In the letter dated 25 November 2023 and signed by SERAP deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization said: “The World Bank and its partners cannot continue to give loans and other funding to these states where there are credible allegations of mismanagement or diversion of public funds.”

SERAP said, “We are concerned that there is a significant risk of mismanagement or diversion of funds linked to the Bank’s investments in many of the country’s 36 states. It is neither appropriate nor responsible lending to give loans to these states only for the loans to be misspent.”

The letter, read in part: “The World Bank’s lending, and support for these states may create the impression of complicity in the allegations of mismanagement or diversion of public funds by the states which may include loans from the Bank and its partners, and federal allocations.

“We would consider the option of pursuing legal action should the World Bank fail or fail to implement the recommendations contained in this letter, and we may join the country’s 36 states in any such suit.”

According to Nigeria’s Debt Management Office, total public debt portfolio for the country’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory is N9.17 trillion. The Federal Government’s total public debt portfolio is N78.2 trillion.”

“SERAP also urges you to demand expressed commitment from Nigeria’s 36 governors to address credible allegations of mismanagement or diversion of public funds in their states and provide guarantees that loans and funding from the Bank and its partners would not be used to fund the luxurious lifestyles of politicians.

“SERAP urges the Bank to send independent monitors to the 36 states to monitor the spending of the loans and other funding obtained from the Bank and its partners to remove the risks of mismanagement or diversion of public funds by these states.”

“The World Bank currently has a portfolio of about $8.5 billion spread across the country. The Bank has also approved several loans and other funding facilities to the country’s 36 states including the recent $750 million credit line meant to the states carry out reforms to attract investment and create jobs.”

“The accounts of Nigeria’s 36 states are generally not open to public scrutiny as many of them continue to refuse freedom of information requests seeking transparency and accountability in the spending of public funds.”

“The World Bank and its partners need to make clear to Nigeria’s state governors that it would not tolerate any mismanagement or diversion of public funds by immediately suspending any pending loans and other funding to them until the allegations of mismanagement or diversion of public funds are investigated.”

“The Bank has a legal responsibility to ensure that suspected perpetrators are brought to justice, and that any mismanaged or diverted public funds are returned to the treasuries of the states.”

The hope of the family and the Otulu Amumara autonomous Community, Ezinihitte Mbaise, Imo State, to reunite with their father and Traditional Ruler, His Royal Highness, Eze (Sir) Joe-Benz Ochulor, after he was abducted has been dashed. It has ended in tragedy.

Less than 24 hours after Eze Ochulor, the Olu 1 of Otulu, Amumara, was abducted from his Palace on Saturday, November 25, he was gruesomely murdered.

While his family and Community were waiting for  his abductors to contact them and, perhaps, ask for ransom, his mutilated body was found along the Chokoneze- Mbutu road where it was dumped. One of his legs was severed from his body.

The gunmen who invaded his Palace and whisked him away, on arrival, shot sporadically and scared away the people who could have raised an alarm immediately.

Speculation now is that the incident was not the usual kidnap for money, but a planned assassination.

At the time of filing this report, there has been no statement from the Police, the family, community, the Eze-in-Council or the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers.

Fear has gripped the Otulu Amumara autonomous Community as well as the whole of Mbaise and the murdered Eze’s colleagues as the reason for his tragic end is yet to be known.

Akeredolu Must Resign As Ondo Governor – Sowore,  Says President Tinubu’s Intervention Unnecessary

A social and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has rejected the intervention of President Bola Tinubu in political crisis in Ondo state insisting that Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu must resign due to his health challenges.

The Publisher argued that President Tinubu’s intervention was unnecessary especially his insistence that Akeredolu must continue to govern the state from Ibadan, Oyo state, despite his alleged incapacitation.

“Mr. Akeredolu spent three months in Germany, where he had gone to receive medical attention. He returned to the country in September, but he has not been to the state since that time. He is recuperating from his private home in Ibadan, several kilometers away from Akure.”

Sowore, who expressed his views through X, formerly Twitter, and tagged both Bola Tinubu and Akeredolu.

H tweeted, “Let’s remind @officialABAT that his so-called intervention in Ondo state to prop up an obviously incapacitated Governor @RotimiAkeredolu is unacceptable, and hereby loudly rejected! Akeredolu must resume or RESIGN!

“He weaponized the Ondo State House of Assembly to remove the deputy, who was fast enough to stop the orchestrated plan.”

After the stakeholders meeting on Friday, at the presidential villa, Abuja, Ajuri Ngalele, the spokesperson for the president released a statement.

The statement reads, “In his bid to restore political stability in Ondo State, President Bola Tinubu, late on Friday, waded into the months-long crisis between factions loyal to the Executive Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, and the Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

“This followed marathon negotiations between the President and the Deputy Governor, representatives of Governor Akeredolu, federal and state lawmakers of Ondo, officials of the state’s chapter of the All Progressives’ Congress, and other stakeholders in the state at the State House, Abuja

“The President advised all opposing parties to bury the hatchet and embrace peace, eliciting commitments to this effect.

“This means that Governor Akeredolu remains Chief Executive of the State, Aiyedatiwa remains Deputy Governor, and members of the State Executive Council continue their respective duties, even as the leadership of the State’s House of Assembly and the APC Chapter in Ondo State is preserved.

“Mr. Aiyedatiwa, who declared his decision to maintain the status quo and unite all the factions, said: “I want to say that I pledge to all of you that I embrace every one of you. I put behind all that has happened before now. I’ve let go and also let God, just as the President has advised us.”

Ondo APC Crisis: Tinubu’s Intervention Mere Window Dressing – PDP

Rotimi Akeredolu

By Ayodele Oni

The Ondo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) has insisted that the only permanent solution to the political crisis rocking the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is for Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to make himself available in the state.

The opposition party maintained that  the intervention of President Bola Tinubu could not resolve the crisis.

Tinubu had met with the leadership of the State House of Assembly and of the ruling APC in the state, at the State House, Abuja, late at night on Friday, in a bid to resolve the crisis.

The meeting agreed that the status quo should be maintained with the deputy governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa mandated to carry everybody along and withdraw court cases he instituted over the case.

The opposition party, through its Publicity Secretary, Mr Kennedy Peretei, described the meeting as a mere window dressing, stressing that if Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, does not return to the state, there won’t be any meaningful resolution of the crisis.

He said, “Let us pray that the presidential intervention will not go the way of the Bello Masari Reconciliation Committee set up by APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje.

“After several trips to Abuja at taxpayers’ expense, both parties returned to court after promising to withdraw all cases.

“Again, major stakeholders in the APC and Ondo State Government were at the Villa to iron out their intractable differences.

“From what we have read about the outcome, Tinubu’s intervention is a mere window dressing.

“Out of respect for his office, the impeachment of the Deputy Governor will no longer see the daylight, but as long as Akeredolu remains in hiding, it is not yet Uhuru, the cat and mouse race will continue.”

Tinubu Did Not Order Akeredolu’s Removal As Governor – Presidency, Says The SAN  Remains Ondo State Governor

0
Akeredolu and Tinubu

By Adesina Soyooye

The Presidency has denied the insinuations making the rounds in the Media that President Bola Tinubu, on Friday, approved the removal of Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, as the Governor of Ondo State.

Akeredolu, the urbane, fire-eating, Governor of the State has been in poor health, and once went on a three-month medical vacation to Germany.

On return since September, he has been in his private residence in Ibadan, Oyo State, from where he runs the affairs of the State. He has not set foot in Ondo State.

Akeredolu’s absence from the State has expectedly sparked off political crisis, including the factionalization of both the Executive and Legislative Arms of Government. They are divided into two – pro- Akeredolu and pro- the Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa. It has also precipitated an impeachment move against Aiyedatiwa by pro- Akeredolu State Lawmakers and a stiff resistance by pro- Lawmakers Aiyedatiwa. Calls for the handing over of power to the Deputy Governor as Acting Governor, have also been loudly canvassed.

But on Friday, President Bola  Tinubu waded in. He held an elaborate meeting with both factions and other Ondo State stakeholders where he convinced them to immediately sheate their swords and work together.

However, reports in the Media of the meeting gave the impression that the President had empowered the Deputy Governor to be in charge, especially, when Aiyedatiwa was quoted as saying that he would carry all Commissioners along.

The report has prompted a reaction from the Presidency which denied, in a statement, that President Tinubu ever asked the members of the Ondo State House of Assembly to remove Akeredolu as Governor. Far from that, the statement issued by the President’s  Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Ajuri Ngelale, said the President emphasised at the Peace Meeting that Akeredolu remains the Governor and Aiyedatiwa the Deputy Governor. The statement, also, said that the President ordered a stop to any impeachment moves against the Deputy Governor.

Following is the full text of Ajuri’s statement.

“In his bid to restore political stability in Ondo State, President Bola Tinubu, late on Friday, waded into the months-long crisis between factions loyal to the Executive Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, and the Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

“This followed marathon negotiations between the President and the Deputy Governor, representatives of Governor Akeredolu, federal and state lawmakers of Ondo, officials of the state’s chapter of the All Progressives Congress, and other stakeholders in the state at the State House, Abuja.

“The President advised all opposing parties to bury the hatchet and embrace peace, eliciting commitments to this effect.

“This means that Governor Akeredolu remains the Chief Executive of the State, Aiyedatiwa remains Deputy Governor, and members of the State Executive Council continue their respective duties, even as the leadership of the State’s House of Assembly and the APC Chapter in Ondo State is preserved.”
