“Do Not Succumb To Hardship, New Nigeria In Your Hands” – Obi To Nigerian Youths”

0

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the February 25, 2023 election, Peter Obi has charged Nigerian youths not to cower in their resolve for a new Nigeria no matter the weight of the challenges.

Obi who made the charge in a keynote address at an international youth Conference in Enugu on Friday reminded them that Nigeria belongs to them.

“You must not cower in the face of difficult challenges and bad governance that pervade the nation, but must raise your voices and demand for good governance”

According to Obi “We all must persevere and work together to dismantle the criminality and corruption that has festered through different levels of government in our nation.”

He commended the organizers of the program for the wonderful initiative aimed at empowering our youths with the right knowledge and leadership skills to make positive change. We will, all together, build the New Nigeria of our dreams.

Reminiscing on the theme of the conference attended by notable youth mentors, which is on Sustainable Development Goals, SDG, Obi dutifully interacted with a cross-section of young entrepreneurs, youth advocates, and change agents.

The event was aimed at discussing how to ‘Accelerate Actions to Achieve the SDGs in Nigeria Through Entrepreneurship and Civic Engagement,’ a topic of critical importance to the nation, especially the youths, whose future must be secured.

“As a keynote speaker, I pointed out to them that the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, are a follow-up of the Millennium Development Goals, MDGs (2000 – 2015), which before it ended in 2015, none was ever achieved in Nigeria because they were not mainstreamed into the development agenda of government, as other countries, like China, India, Vietnam, etc did.

“I also related to the enterprising youths how the number one goal of the MDGs was to fight extreme poverty but unfortunately, within the period of trying to implement the MDGs, more Nigerians became poorer, while other nations who mainstreamed their MDGs into their development agenda and followed it, like China and India, in the said period, pulled 439 million and 271 million people out of poverty respectively.

In the area of education, Obi noted that countries like China and India improved tremendously in HDI while the opposite was the case in sub-Saharan Africa, especially Nigeria, which has not only failed to meet up with the MDG goals but has the highest number of out-of-school children now. This, therefore, shows how almost impossible it is to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of eradicating poverty and ensuring, at least, basic education for every child by 2030.

The LP standard beer encouraged the youths to take on entrepreneurship, no matter the difficulties they face in the country. as it’s only through entrepreneurship that we will be able to build a strong small business sector that will catalyze the economy, foster productivity, and help in moving the country from consumption to production”

The Convener of the yearly ‘Shaping the Future Conference’ is a young Nigerian international award winner,  Noel Ifeanyi Alumona of Vanderbilt University in the United States.

Lagos State Government has said it remains unperturbed by the condemnation that has trailed the demolition of illegal buildings on drainages and canals.

It stated that it won’t rescind its decision to reclaim the drainage right of way within the seven-metre setback despite reported threats and propaganda from some quarters in the State.

The Commissioner of Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, said that the State Government is unbothered with the threats flying around, stressing that a seven-day contravention notice had been issued to the owners of the buildings whose structures encroached the seven-meter drainage setback on Orchid Road., Agungi, Ajiran, Conservation Road, Osapa, and Oral Estate II along the Ikota River in the Lekki area of the State.

The State Government said the contravention notice was issued following several stop-work notices served on the owners of the structures before stressing that the “enforcement will commence” upon expiration of the deadline.

This clampdown reportedly raised a lot of concerns with claims that the Government was targeting certain ethnic groups, especially on social media.

Reacting to this claim on his X handle, @Tokunbo_Wahab, on Thursday, the Commissioner insisted that the Government would no longer allow a breakdown of the law and “anyhowness” in the State.

“We are not going to bow to any propaganda, blackmail, or threat. No one can break the law and still benefit from it. The law will take its course. The era of ‘anyhowness’ is completely over!” Wahab stated.

There are insinuations that the demolition exercise is mainly targeted at the Igbo. But the State Government strongly denies it.

As the World International AIDS Day was being marked on Friday, Osun State Action Committee on AIDS (OSACA) has informed that the dreaded disease is still among Nigerians with not less than 52, 000 infected in the state.

The Executive Secretary of OSACA, Dr Niyi Oginni said an estimated number of people living with HIV/AIDS in Osun is 52,000, stating that the virus is still within the populace.

The day was an all-inclusive sensitization on Friday in Osogbo as the Osun State Action Committee on AIDS (OSACA) in collaboration with other partners commemorated World AIDS Day.

The celebration, which started with street sensitization from Olaiya, Aregbe and Ogo-Oluwa, climaxed at the OSAMDO hall where tests were carried out, lectures delivered and free protective materials shared.

Speaking with the participants, the Executive Secretary of the OSACA, Dr Niyi Oginni said the virus is still within the populace.

While advising the people to always get tested, Oginni called  for improved funding of the agency in order to deliver on its mandate optimally.

Oginni said, “this is the agency that the government has established to tackle the spread of the HIV/AIDS but the funding has been grossly inadequate.

“Over the years, the world bank and other development partners have been funding the agency, but they are no longer available. So the government must do its best to ensure that the agency is funded to perform our responsibility optimally.”

Speaking on the theme of this year’s celebration which is “let the communities lead”, the Executive Secretary said, “the community is a group of people that have similar interests.

“The community can be a religious group, the CSO, CBO, youth groups etc and they have a critical role to play in leading the advocacy towards ending the spread of the virus at grassroots.”

Participants were taken through the strategic plans towards achieving 95:95:95 in testing, management and awareness at the grassroots.

Speaking at the event, Dr Micheal Oyerinde, the Special Adviser to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Primary Healthcare said the government will take a critical look into the paucity of funds battling the OSACA.

He commended the agency for the sensitization it has embarked upon. December 1st is set aside to mark International AIDS Day across the globe.

Senate Wants FG To Stop Allocation To LGs Without Democratically Elected Officials, Flays Benue Gov Alia, For Dissolution Of LGs

The Nigeria Senate is set to ensure that the local councils described as the third tier of government are allowed to operate freely like other tiers.

The upper house is also working to curb Governors’ too much power on the councils as well as ensure the democratically elected officials are allowed to run the councils.

To this end, the Red Chamber on Friday urged the federal government to withhold the statutory allocation to local government councils without democratically elected chairmen.

This followed a motion by Senator Abba Moro (Benue South) titled “Urgent Need to halt the erosion of democracy: the dissolution of elected councils in Benue State,” during plenary.

The Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, had sacked the local government chairmen in the state and appointed caretaker committees for the local government councils.

The Red Chamber condemned the arbitrary dissolution of democratically elected local government councils in Benue and other states in Nigeria and urged the Benue State governor to adhere to his oath of office, obey the rule of law and defend the constitution.

Moro, in his motion, said placing caretaker committees to replace elected councils was an aberration and alien to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

Moro, quoting Section (1) of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees a system of local government by democratically elected councils, said the law placed the responsibility on every state to ensure the existence of local government councils.

He noted that there were subsisting court rulings directing the governor, the House of Assembly, their agents, privies not to tamper with the tenure of the elected councils.

He said neither the governor nor the state government had appealed these judgments.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North) said about 16 states in Nigeria are currently without democratically elected council officials

He said the Senate should direct the Finance Minister to stop funding local government without elected council officials. The suggestion was supported by Senator Ali Ndume.

Abdulfatai Buhari (Oyo North) said the Electoral Act should be amended to empower the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct local government elections.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio frowned at the establishment of multiple federal agencies, but advocated the creation of the National Electoral Commission for Local Government so that governors would no longer have overbearing influence on council polls.

CBN Moves To Freeze Bank Accounts Without BVN, NIN

To curb activities of scammers that defraud owners of bank accounts in the country, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is set to freeze accounts without a Bank Verification Number (BVN) or National Identification Number (NIN) from April 2024.

This is according to a Friday circular by the apex bank which said a BVN or NIN verification will be “conducted shortly”.

Owners of bank accounts have in recent been victims of scammers that randomly and illegally withdraw money from banks accounts which do not belong to them.

Some of the illegal withdrawals have also been traced to some staff of the banks, who collude with the scammers to rip off unsuspecting customers.

The CBN explained that the move is part of its efforts to promote financial system stability and strengthening of the Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures in financial institutions under its purview.

It also said all BVN or NIN attached to accounts/wallets must be electronically revalidated by January 31, 2024, according to the circular by the CBN Director of Payments System Management Department, Chibuzo Efobi, and the Director of Financial Policy and Regulation Department Haruna Mustapha.

Arson At Kogi REC’s Residence: APC Says Hold SDP Responsible

By Ayodele Oni

Political parties in Kogi State have started to trade blames over the attack on the residence of the State Resident Electoral Commissioner early Friday.

The All Progressives Congress, (APC) Governorship Campaign Council accused the Governorship Candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Muritala Yakubu Ajaka,

Armed men early Friday attacked the official residence of the Kogi Resident Electoral Commission, Hale Gabriel Longpet, in Lokoja.

The Director of Media and Publicity/Spokesperson for the Campaign Council, Kingsley Fanwo, who spoke at a press briefing on Friday said: “The same arsonists also had an attempt to burn down the Kogi State Government House foiled by our eagle-eye security agents.

“The same attempt was foiled at the state APC Secretariat in Lokoja.

“The SDP in the state and their collaborators are desperate to destroy some documents in INEC to cover the heist they committed in Kogi East where they allegedly killed APC supporters and drove them out of collation centres to forge the results that were eventually trumped by the massive votes of Kogites for the governor-elect.

“The SDP candidate and his collaborators were attempting to corrupt certain documents in INEC before handing them to their legal team.

“We have no problem allowing legal teams to access documents and materials. It is the norm.

“But we won’t allow any desperate bloodthirsty politician to tamper with the true verdict of the Kogi people.

“The bold-face criminality being perpetrated by the defeated SDP candidate and his violent gang of criminals was as a result of the lack of consequences over the gruesome killing of an APC supporter, Khadijat, at Kotonkarfe by agents of the SDP.

“They shamelessly came out to say Khadijat was bearing an arm. Till date, Muritala Yakubu Ajaka and his gun-wielding killers have been moving freely on the streets.

“If they had been arrested for killing an innocent woman, they wouldn’t have had the guts to attempt to attack the Kogi Resident Electoral Commissioner.

“We also told the world of plans by the SDP to burn down the INEC Office in Lokoja.

“We thank the Police and other security agencies for protecting the INEC Office.

“Frustrated by the watertight security around INEC, the gun-throttling SDP criminals went to the residence of the Kogi State INEC Commissioner in an attempt to kill him.

“They were engaged in a fierce gun battle and they resorted to burning vehicles and other valuables around the area.

“The reason they are desperate to destroy some documents in INEC is to cover the heist they committed in Kogi East where they killed APC supporters and drove them out of collation centres to forge the results that were eventually trumped by the massive votes of Kogites for the Governor-Elect.

“They are attempting to corrupt certain documents in INEC before handing them to their legal team. We have no problem allowing legal teams to access documents and materials. It is the norm.

“But we won’t allow any desperate bloodthirsty politician to tamper with the true verdict of the Kogi people.

“After their violent protests a few days ago, our people have also moved to Lokoja to ensure their mandate is protected.

“Resorting to assassination and arson will never help the Social Democratic Party and their confused candidate.

“Now is the time to arrest Muritala Yakubu Ajaka before he throws Kogi into a state of anomie. Democracy is the expression of the wishes of the people.

“Those wishes have been expressed and no amount of bullets can silence the voice of the ballot. We are calling on the Police, DSS and other security agencies to immediately arrest the slide to anarchy by arresting Muritala Yakubu Ajaka and his co-swimmers in the pool of violence.

“We have cautioned our supporters to remain calm and the call will be more effective if the anarchists are immediately apprehended and prosecuted.”

He admonished the media organizations cut across print and broadcast, as well as members of the public to discontinue the further referencing of Enogie, Duke, as Traditional Rulers in the Benin Kingdom.

The spokesman stated that the BTC will consider the breach as a serious affront to the entire Benin People and the palace of the Oba which will be visited with serious consequences under the law.

Following the conduct of Local Government Election in Ekiti State on Saturday, the State Government has announced restriction of movement.

As at close of work on Friday, the only political party which has fully signified intention to participate in the Council Poll is the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), while the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had earlier announced its intention not to participate.

The State Independent National Electoral Commission (SIEC) said it had distributed sensitive and non sensitive materials for the election.

The election is expected to produce 16 chairmen and vice or the local governments as well as for the nine Local Council Development Areas, (LCDAs).

Governor Biodun Oyebanji has urged the people of the  State to be law abiding and conduct themselves in a peaceful and orderly manner during Saturday’s local government election.

The Governor, in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Yinka Oyebode, told the people to see the local government election as an important step in enhancing development and good governance at the grassroots.

Governor Oyebanji urged the voters to consider the overriding Ekiti interest as well as the interests of their respective local government councils  in determining who gets elected.

He, however, urged them to go about the electoral process in an atmosphere devoid of rancour.

Oyebanji equally appealed to the candidates in the election as well as the political class to pursue their ambitions and interests peacefully, noting that the peace of Ekiti State is not negotiable.

The Governor called on traditional, religious and community leaders to use their influence to prevent youths from engaging in activities that may have negative impact on the election.

According to the Governor, security agencies are at alert to respond to any act of violence or brigandage during the process. He, therefore, advised those planning to cause any disruption to reconsider their actions.

He also called on the state electoral commission to ensure transparency and professionalism in the conduct of the election in the overall interest of the state.

“The local government election is crucial to our development agenda, and every citizen has a role to play in ensuring we have a hitch- free election that will produce a new set of officials for all our councils.”
