“Halt Mindless Killings In The South-east” Ndigbo In Diaspora Urge President Tinubu

0

By Daniel Maduka

Ndigbo in the Diaspora under the aegis of Igbo General Assembly, IGA, have called on President Bola Tinubu to arrest the high level of insecurity and human carnage ravaging most parts of the South-east Region.

The Malaga Spain based IGA in a statement issued and signed by its President- General, Ozo Kingsley Ndibe, and Secretary, Hon E. C. Onugha, on Saturday February, 17, 2024 ,and made available to a section of the Media expressed the  optimism and confidence in the abilities of the President to find an enduring panacea to the security challenges being faced by the people of the South-east Region. They urged the President to use the instrumentalities of his office  as well as his status as the father of Nigeria  to halt the orgy of violence and mindless human and material destruction in most States of the region.

The IGA which statement  was issued at the end of its Conference in Spain regretted that since the commencement of the avoidable security problems, Diaspora investments which have been one the bedrocks of the region’s economy has considerably dwindled, as people can no longer come home to invest.

The disproportionate short fall in diaspora investments, according to the Umbrella body of Ndigbo in the Diaspora, has resulted in an increase in youth unemployment, with same youths now a willing tool in the hands of merchants of violence, kidnappings, and other criminal enterprises.

They noted that this ugly development has been a major source of concern to all Ndigbo both at home and  abroad, and lamented  the lack of political will on the part of  the  Muhammadu Buhari administration to halt the  slide.

The IGA advised that one of the practical steps that should be considered in the efforts to restore normalcy and end the continued economic strangulation of  the region is to find a lasting solution to the lingering incarceration of Mazi Nnamdi Kalu.

“There have been incessant cases of kidnappings, killings and regular bloodetting in the South-east, where our mothers can no longer go to the farm and fathers cannot also go out to conduct their businesses.

“Movements have been restricted in the region every Monday of the week.. All these have been impacting negatively on the  educational future of the children and economic growth of the region.

“As stakeholders in the Igbo General Assembly. we are calling for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kalu.

“We have faith in your administration’s abilities to build on equal rights ,justice ,and fairness for all irrespective of tribal ,political and or religious affiliations ” IGA  stated.

Falana To Tinubu: Resist Pressure From IMF To Increase Electricity Tariff, Fuel Price

0

By Akinwale Kasali

A senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Femi Falana, has advised the Federal Government not to bow under the unnecessary pressure by the International Monetary Fund, IMF, to increase the electricity tariff and fuel pump price.

Nigerians are presently facing economic hardship following the deplorable State of the nation’s economy that has led to protests in some part of the country.

Falana, Chairman, Alliance on Surviving Covid 19 and Beyond, ASCAB,  in a statement on Friday 16th February, 2024, advised President Bola Tinubu to reject the IMF’s advice and not further inflict pains on Nigerians.

Falana said that contrast advice given to UK Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt against cutting taxes by the IMF, should be totally rejected by the President.

He said: “Sometime in November 2023, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, said that President Bola Tinubu stopped the implementation of a hike in electricity tariff and insisted that subsidy be paid on power consumed nationwide.

Adelabu said then “Tariffs should have been raised months back, but Mr President said until we can achieve regular and incremental power supply we can’t touch the tariff.

The Minister also said that “But for political reasons and empathy, you can not cause additional burden on Nigerians. We just had the removal of the fuel subsidy, we are talking about the exchange rate skyrocketing, galloping inflation, and so many others that bring hardship to the people.”

On January 1, 2024, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) equally dismissed the widespread rumours of an increase in electricity.

“In the same vein, on February 8, 2024, the Nigerian state-oil company the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited said that it had no plans to raise petrol prices after a second devaluation of the Naira in less than a year, following speculation that it could increase prices to recover some of its import costs.

“The NNPC — the sole importer of petrol because local private firms are unable to obtain foreign currency — urged Nigerians to disregard the speculation about price rises, adding that “there are no plans for an upward review of the (petrol) price.

“However, three days ago, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) directed the Bola Tinubu administration to remove the pump price of fuel and electricity tariffs without any further delay on the grounds that “current subsidized rates are thought to be significantly below the actual market prices. By phasing out these subsidies, the government would allow fuel and electricity prices to align more closely with their true market value, potentially leading to increased costs for consumers.

“Barely 24 hours later, the Minister of Power, Mr. Adedibu said that Nigeria could not continue to subsidise electricity, adding that the nation must begin to move towards a cost-effective tariff model, as the country is currently indebted to the tune of 1.3 trillion naira to generating companies (GenCos) and 1.3 billion dollars owed gas companies.”

“It is doubtful if the neoliberal ideologues in government are aware of the fact that on January 30, 2024, the IMF warned the UK Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt against cutting taxes, arguing that country needs to curb public borrowing and prioritise spending in areas such as health, education and tackling climate change. Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, IMF chief economist, told the Financial Times that the UK’s focus should be on “the path towards a fiscal consolidation” despite expectations that Hunt would cut taxes at his spring Budget.

“ Hunt should be “trying to rebuild fiscal buffers . . . in the context in which there are important spending needs”, Gourinchas said, rather than add to the £20bn of personal and business tax cuts delivered in November. We would rather wish they would not do this type of tax cuts, and that they would instead focus on both addressing the spending needs and on the path towards a fiscal consolidation.

“ In urging the Bola Tinubu administration to pluck up the courage to reject the dangerous directives of the IMF to further increase the pump price of PMS and electricity tariffs, the international intruder should be questioned for applying different standards to Nigeria and the United Kingdom. Henceforth, the Federal Government should halt the implementation of the dangerous prescriptions of the IMF including the removal of subsidies and floating of the Naira.

“Our economic managers should be wary of the  sort of lectures they receive from the IMF on the matter of subsidies given the realities in some advanced  capitalist economies.

“According to the London-based news agency, Reuters, on  June 8, 2023, the British  government said  that it had paid almost 40 billion pounds ($50 billion) in energy subsidies since it began to help households and businesses cope with the surge in power bills after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“The same Reuters reported  last year that the United States’ subsidies for renewable energy producers more than doubled between 2016 and 2022, forming nearly half of all federal energy-related support in that period. Renewable subsidies jumped to $15.6 billion in fiscal year 2022 from $7.4 billion in fiscal year 2016, according to the Energy Information Administration’s Federal Financial Interventions and Subsidies in Energy report.

The French newspaper, Le Monde,  also  reported that on  April 21, 2023, the French government said that it would continue subsidising electricity bills into 2025 as prices suffer from Russia’s invasion of “Ukraine and part of the country’s nuclear reactor fleet remaining offline. The IMF has not called on France to stop subsidising electricity and increase electricity tariffs. So, the IMF anti-subsidy campaign in Nigeria should be flatly rejected. “

Afenifere Exonerates President Tinubu Over Economic Hardship, Blames Buhari

Bola Ahmed Tinubu

By Akinwale Kasali

Afenifere, Pan Yoruba Socio-political Group has told Nigerians not to blame the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration for the present economic hardship the nation is undergoing. It stressed that the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari should be held responsible.

The foremost Yoruba Group in a Statement signed by the Group’s Publicity and Organising Secretaries, Jare Ajayi and Kole Omololu, said that the immediate past administration, dug political and economic holes for the administration of his successor.

It added that the Buhari administration “did not make provision for oil subsidies in last year’s budget which made Tinubu cancel the regime of oil subsidies in his inaugural speech.

It added that the “economic downturn was caused by Buhari’s administration which was built on a platform of hope and a defective federalism saying promises made were not fulfilled.

The group said that “Under Buhari’s watch, terrorists and banditry were operating effortlessly. Law and order broke down.

“Many innocent citizens including the daughter of our leader were killed and or kidnapped.

“President Buhari could not rein in his critical officials like the then Governor of CBN, Mr Godwin Emefiele, who was printing money rather than facing the reality of taking the difficult decisions, which were postponed till the evil day.”

The group said a probe panel accused Godwin Emefiele and his team of printing N22.7 trillion through ways and means and the federal government was borrowing to pay salaries and pensions during the years of the Buhari administration.

It added that some ministers suggested the removal of subsidies, among other economic decisions but President Buhari did not agree until his last year in office to lay a booby trap for the incoming administration of President Tinubu.

“ It was, therefore, obvious that we were simply postponing the evil day. The CBN Governor denied leaks flying around that the books were being doctored. He reassured the federation that all was well.

“ He even wanted to contest the presidential election! There were no penalties for his infractions by President Buhari.

“These inactions and false lives continued till May 29, 2023, when the new helmsman, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, was sworn in as President.

“President Tinubu wasted no time amending his inauguration address and declared the subsidy regime over! This was obvious as there was no appropriation for subsidy from June 2023.

“He quickly followed up with the deregulation of the forex regime, which resulted in the free fall of the Naira.

A man who is not shy about making difficult decisions, he probably underestimated the capability and capacity of the beneficiaries of the old order to make things ungovernable for his administration.”

Afenifere noted that “those sleeping and snoring during the eight years of Buhari suddenly woke up forgetting that these remedial actions should have been taken many years back.

“The major sin of President Tinubu was in his contesting and winning the presidential election and making these decisions, which will hurt in the short term but bring us back to reality in the long run.

Afenifere, therefore, suggested a vibrant Ministry of Information to regularly stay in touch with the people, as a way out of the economic downturn.

It also suggested regular town hall meetings across the country where ministers would go back to their constituencies to engage with the people.

The group said “there should be the realignment of the National Assembly budget and launch of operations go back to the people by the legislators and each member must take palliatives back to the constituency.

” Governors receiving almost double allocations due to the removal of subsidies and readjustment of the exchange rates should deliver to their people. The allocations of each state of the federation should be published monthly.

“Implementation of operation grow what we eat and eat what we grow policy. Make banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism a capital offence punishable by death.

“Return to true and fiscal federalism with state police, for which we commend the President and Governors’ endorsement, and state ownership of mineral resources.

“This is not the time for some elder statesmen to make incendiary comments that can put our unity in jeopardy. Rather, it is a time to deepen peaceful co-existence to navigate through our current challenges.

Afenifere noted that” Orchestrating anarchy will be resisted in our dear nation. We fought through our blood to achieve democracy. We will also vigorously defend it, as it is here to stay.”

Ondo Reps Member Faults Allegations Against Gov Aiyedatiwa, Accuses Colleagues Of Being Political

Lucky Aiyedatiwa

By Ayodele Oni

A member of the House of Representatives representing, Ondo East/West, Federal Constituency, Abiola Makinde, has faulted the letter written by some Members of the House of Representatives in Ondo State to President Bola Tinubu where they accused Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of some wrongdoings.

Makinde, who reacted to the letter through a statement, accused his colleagues of being politically motivated with each of the signatories having Governorship ambition or supporting one of the aspirants.

He insisted that the letter, signed by five persons, did not represent the position of the Ondo state caucus at the green chamber.

“With due respect to my colleagues, I think this letter has revealed those who intend to create crisis in the party than averting it. That lawmakers who are leaders in their own constituencies would suddenly wake up to protect the dead Former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who they abandoned when he was alive is self defeating.

“Since the death of the former governor, this caucus has not deemed it fit to pay a condolence visit to his family, but yet they claim to now love him in death more than when he was alive.

“Hon. Adesida, leader of the caucus, is angling to be the running mate of one of the governorship aspirants in the state. Hon. Odimayo is a governorship aspirant.

“Hon. Adelegbe is the Director General of the campaign of another governorship aspirant, Hon. Mayowa Akinfolarin while Hon. Akinfiranye is the Director General of the campaign of another aspirant, Wale Akinterinwa, who is his kinsman.

“Therefore, it is easy to see where the truth lies in all of this. There is nothing honourable in being bonded to fight a common enemy who you think is ahead. I will never join in such.

“All the allegations against the governor were put forward in bad faith. The five lawmakers were in a hurry to nail a man who did nothing to hurt them.

“Irrespective of who gets the accolades, the payment of #35,000 wage award and 2017 salary arrears claimed to be Akeredolu’s initiative didn’t come until Aiyedatiwa became the Governor.

“The expenditure of government is done on month by month basis. Before his death, Akeredolu was out of office for about six months. How can lawmakers, who are supposed to have deep knowledge of how government runs, claim that what is being done now was approved by him over six months ago?

“That lawmakers would even groan at those lofty achievements instead of applauding them speaks volume of the hatred in their hearts.

“Suppose it’s Akeredolu’s initiative as they claimed, why is the Governor blamed for destroying the legacies of Aketi even when he has vowed openly to complete all projects initiated by his former boss?”

“My Son’s Murder Too Hard For Me”- Edo APC Governorship Aspirant, Withdraws From Race

Ehiozuwa Agbonayinwa

By Adesina Soyooye

Ehiozuwa Agbonayinwa, an Edo State Governorship Aspirant under the All Progressives Congress, APC,  has been forced to withdraw from the race.

He was one of the 12 Aspirants scheduled to slug it out in the Party Primaries scheduled for Saturday. But Agbonayinma, a former member of the House of Representatives withdrew on Thursday from the race, a heart broken man.

He was confronted by every parent’s  worst nightmare. His 23 year-old son, Isazuwa Agbonayinma was fatally shot by a gunman in Houston, Texas, United States of America where he resided.

Agbonayinma broke the sad news of the tragedy which befell him, and his decision to withdraw from the race in the aftermath of the incident, when he addressed his supporters at the Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area on Thursday.

He told them: “Over a year ago, I decided to give serious consideration to the calls from well-meaning Edolites at home, and in the Diaspora, on the dire need to change the political narrative in Edo State, while expressing confidence in my ability to champion the cause of moving Edo State forward.

“So, I began consultations with my family, friends, close allies, leaders of our great party, traditional rulers, religious leaders, opinion leaders, and media influencers across Edo State and the nation on my interest to contest in the 2024 Edo governorship race.

“To the glory of God, the positive reception has been overwhelming. I am eternally grateful for the individual and collective efforts for this success.

“At the height of this success, my family suffered a very tragic development. My 23-year-old and very promising son, Osazuwa Michael Agbonayinma (Zuwa), was fatally shot and killed in Houston, Texas, USA. I have just returned from the United States after my son was buried. This is a very bitter experience that cannot be wished even upon an enemy.

“Presently, my family and I are highly devastated. And I am not in the right frame of mind to continue any serious political campaign at this time. After due consultations and consideration, I am suspending my gubernatorial campaign at this time. We need some quiet time to grieve and heal.”

Under the APC, 11 aspirants will participate in the Primary of Saturday. They include: Clem Agba, a former Minister of State under former President Muhammadu Buhari, Monday Okpebholo, Lucky Imasuen, Anamero Dekeri, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Gideon Ikhine Col David Imuse (retd), Gen Charles Airhiavbere, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor, a former one-time Governor of the State, Blessing Agbomhere, Dennis Idahosa and Ernest Umakhihe.

NLC Declares Nationwide Protest Over Hardship, Says  Not Interested In Empty Talks

NLC Strike

By Akinwale Kasali

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has decided to go on a two-day Nationwide Strike if the Federal Government fails to implement the agreements signed with it in October 2023.

The NLC said that it is tired of the empty talks of the Federal Government, directing its members and affiliate unions to begin mobilisation for a two-day national protest expected to take place on February 27 and 28, 2024.

The two-day national protest will take place at the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum it had earlier issued.

President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, who addressed newsmen at the end of the Union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja, asked his members to be on standby for an indefinite strike, which would commence seven days after the nationwide protest if the government still fails to meet its demands.

Ajaero, who noted that Labour was no longer interested in empty talks from the Government but in actions, urged the Government to immediately implement the agreement and restore faith in the democratic process as Nigerians were struggling to survive.

It would be recalled that the meeting between the Federal Government and the National Leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, ended in deadlock.

Recall that the NLC and TUC on February 8 issued a 14-day nationwide strike notice to the Federal Government over the failure to implement the agreements reached on October 2, 2023, following the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit known as petrol.

The unions said despite their efforts to ensure industrial peace, the government seemed unperturbed by the mass suffering and hardship across the country.

Speaking in an interview with The Punch on Tuesday, the NLC Vice President, Hakeem Ambali, said the meeting between the organised labour and the Minister of State Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha ended in a deadlock.

According to Ambali, the Minister could not convince the Unions to suspend the strike slated for February 23, 2024, adding that the meeting was called to review the level of implementation of the October agreement.

He asserted that the strike would go on unless the Federal Government addressed the untold hardship meted out to Nigerians by the removal of the fuel subsidy.

He said, “The meeting realised that major parts of the agreement had not been implemented, and the Labour minister expressed her disappointment that the government had not kept faith with the spirit of the agreements.

“The meeting resolved subsequently that the agreements have not been well implemented and that they (government) still have windows of opportunities to meet to address all these to avert the impending strikes.”

Ambali lamented that the Federal Government had yet to fulfil its part of the agreement with the labour movement, adding that the agreement was time-bound.

He said: “The two-week ultimatum stands except the government does the needful and addresses the untold hardship meted on Nigerians by the famous pronunciation that ‘subsidy is gone’ on 29 May.

“We can see pockets of protests across the country. These are very dangerous. So, Labour must rise and offer leadership; Our ultimatum is patriotic.

“We signed an agreement in October last year that the buses would be ready to ply Nigeria’s road in December last year. We are already in February. I do not think we have seen any bus on the road.

“On the wage award, which is N35,000, we also realised that the government has not kept faith with that. They were only able to pay one until we issued an ultimatum for 14 days. We realised that even state governments did not negotiate with their labour unions.

“What they only did was that they started paying N10,000 before the agreement was signed. Some of the governors were part of the meeting back then in October. They would have called the labour unions and negotiated new wages, which were not done.”

On the minimum wage negotiation, Ambali noted the NLC declined to meet with the committee as the government was supposed to address the issue.

He said: “For emphasis is the issue of the minimum wage committee. By law, in September 2023, the minimum wage committee should have come into operation six months after the expiration of the old Minimum Wage Act, which was not done.

“The committee was inaugurated about two weeks ago and with the negotiation statute-barred because it is expected to have matured by March 31, 2024, when the existing law becomes obsolete.

“Even now, they said the committee was to brief us yesterday (Monday), we said we are not looking for a technical session. That it is a joint committee between Labour and government who is supposed to have briefed us, and the committee never met.”

Breaking:  FG Seals Sahad Stores Ltd, Abuja, Over Price Fixing

Sahad Stores Sealed

By Gideon Njoku

To try and stem the skyrocket in prices of food items and other essential commodities, the Federal Government has began the sealing of stores and shops and warehouses which it suspects engage in fixing of  prices and hoarding

Nigerians have been grappling with the very high cost of living, especially, in the past couple of months, which has resulted in hunger and anger.

The masses, in a number of States, have taken to the streets to protest the unpleasant high cost of living. Not a few families are going to bed hungry, sparking fears there could be a revolution over the hunger in the land.

The Federal Government, in reaction, has been making frantic efforts to stem the situation by releasing grains  and other palliatives. It, also, suspects sabotage and has warned it would deal decisively with those allegedly hoarding food items and other essential commodities as well as fixing prices.

On Friday, February 16, 2024, the Federal Competition and Condumer Protection Commission set to work in Abuja.

It sealed the Head Office of Sahad Stores Ltd located at Garki Abuja over, alleged, price fixing.

More Stores have, allegedly, been lined -up for same treatment.

Shehu Sani To Northern Monarchs: What Happened To Your Voice In Eight Years Of Buhari’s Misrule?

By Ayodele Oni

There is discordant tunes coming from the northern part of the country over the current economic hardship and escalating costs of products.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar-led Northern Traditional Council,  has warned that rising poverty, hunger, and insecurity in the country will force people to revolt against President Bola Tinubu’s government very soon.

The traditional council stated that “It is getting to a level that traditional leaders could no longer pacify the people from revolting against government and political leaders that are supposed to find solutions to their lingering socio-economic plight.

“We have reached that level, people are very agitated, people are hungry, they are angry, but they still believe there are people who can talk to them.

“They believe in some of their Governors, some other traditional rulers, and some of their religious leaders, fortunately, some of us double as traditional and religious leaders.”

Reacting to the outcry by the monarchs, former Senator representing the Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the 8th National Assembly, Shehu Sani made mockery of the Northern people protesting and calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to put an end to the hardship in the country.

The human rights activist, Sani in a post on his official X page on Friday said “For eight years, Northern Traditional Rulers lost their voice under Buhari; they have found it now.”

Sani wondered what happened to the Northern voice, which remained silent all through the eight years of bastardization of Nigeria’s economy and misrule by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He maintained that the north was asleep when Muhammadu Buhari held the country by the jugular, ruin the country’s economy and laid the foundation for the current hardship.
