Outbreak Of Lassa Fever Kills Personnel In Military Hospital, Kaduna

0

By Ayodele Oni

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of three of its medical personnel in one of the medical facilities in Kaduna state.

The deceased personnel reportedly had contact with a lassa fever patient referred to the medical facility from outside.

The director of army public relations, Onyema Nwachukwu who confirmed this in a statement on Thursday explained that the suspected index patient was managed, but subsequently died two weeks ago at the hospital.

The statement reads : “The attention of the Nigerian Army has been dawn to public concern and apprehension resulting from a leaked correspondence by its medical experts over a suspected outbreak of what presents as Viral Hemorrhagic disease aka Lassa Fever, in one of its medical facilities in Kaduna State.

“While it is yet unclear what we are actually dealing with, the Nigerian Army wishes to confirm that there was indeed some suspicion of what presented as acute Viral Hemorrhagic disease in the Accident and Emergency unit of the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna (NARHK), which has resulted in the death of a couple of its medical staff serving in the hospital.

“In line with best practice in managing such a situation, contact tracing to what is believed to be the index case has been made to a non-military patient who was referred to 44 NARHK from a peripheral medical facility.

“The suspected index patient was managed but subsequently died two weeks ago in the hospital. Sadly, three medical staff of the hospital that had direct contact with the suspected index case have also died within the past 48 hours.

“In response to the suspected outbreak, directives have been passed that Prevention Control (IPC)  measures in and around all military health care facilities in Kaduna be stepped up as part of measures to curtail further spread and loss of lives.

“In this wise, all medical staff of the hospital, their family members and other patients on the contact tracing list have commenced appropriate management and so far nothing of concern has been observed.

“Furthermore, the entire hospital facility has been disinfected, while immediate closure and evacuation of the Accident and Emergency ward of the 44 NARHK has been ordered to allow for thorough fumigation, decontamination and emplacement of other measures of Infection Prevention Control (IPC) .

“As a responsive and responsible organization, the Nigerian Army has also escalated the development to other relevant national and state agencies.

“As of the time of this statement, samples have been taken from suspected contacts and the deceased and sent to the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) laboratory in Kano for analysis. Similarly, the Kaduna state Epidemiologists have been invited to help in unraveling the unfolding development.

“It is imperative to point out, that the Nigerian Army as part of its civil-military relations welfare scheme offers medical services to civilians in its host communities.

“Thus, about 500 civilians receive medical attention weekly at 44NARHK. This unfortunate development is only a setback in our efforts to give back to the society and will not stop the Nigerian Army from continuing this moral obligation to the host communities.

“As of now, all Nigerian Army medical facilities in Kaduna and environs have been put at alert on the need to emplace necessary IPC measures and closely monitor patients, staff and family members.

“The Nigerian Army urges members of the general public to not panic, as adequate measures have already been put in place to contain the suspected outbreak.

“It equally assures that its collaboration with all relevant stakeholders is open, transparent and in tandem with international best practice.”

Movement of Goods to Niger Republic

The Nigeria Customs has warned against the use of the Nigeria/ Niger border by Nigerians for any conceivable business transactions, whether legitimate and or illegal.

The Coordinator of Customs Joint Border Patrol Team North West Zone Comptroller Kola Oladdeji who dropped the warning at an interactive session with the Media in Kano on Thursday February 22 2024 ,said movements of goods along the Niger- Nigeria border now that it has been closed by  Nigeria in difference to the resolution of the Economic Community Of West African States ECOWAS, amounts to not only an economic sabotage ,but a big national Security risk .

Oladeji spoke on the heels of the seizure by the men of the Joint Border Patrol of a 40 feet truck laden with suspected substandard Indonesia made soap  while being smuggled in to the country from the Niger- Nigeria border .

“As you all know the entire border of Nigeria- Niger Republic is closed .So when we see anything on that route we pick it .You don’t have to pass through that border ,whether you are carrying contraband and or legitimate goods . For emphasis, movements of goods and services whether legitimate or illicit  through the route is  prohibited by virtue of ECOWAS subsisting directives.”Oladeji stated

Comptroller Oladeji, also, expressed  displeasure over the aiding and abetting of Smuggling activities along most border posts by border communities ,noting that some unscrupulous elements have resorted to using motorcycles  wheelbarrows, Camels and small trucks to ferry their illicit  goods into the country from border communities using bush parts .

While appealing to Nigerians to shun  illicit businesses such as smuggling , Oladeji called on traditional and religious leaders, and other stakeholders within the border communities to assist in the fight to eradicate all acts capable of undermining the economy of the country.

“We are urging those who engage in smuggling and other unpatriotic businesses to stop . They should engage themselves in legal businesses that will give them rest of mind ” he further cautioned.

Phillips Shuaibu and Asue Ighodalo

By Ayodele Oni

Two candidates have emerged in the Edo State Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Governorship Primary. While the Deputy Governor of the State, Philip Shaibu first claimed victory in a parallel Primary with about 301 votes, in another Primary election, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki’s annoited candidate, Asue Ighodalo was declared winner, and so the Candidate.

Ighodalo, an investment banker, former Chairman of Sterling Bank and Nigerian Breweries, polled 577 votes to beat other seven contestants.

The exercise was held at the Samuel 0gbemudia Stadium in Benin City.

In the exercise, which outcome was predictable, Ighodalo, who enjoys the backing of the State Government, the party, both in the State and National levels as well as groundswell of support by Edo people across the three senatorial zones, practically ran against himself for the party ticket.

Two formidable aspirants, Barr. Omosede Igbinedion and  Ogbeide Ihama had earlier withdrawn from the contest before voting by the delegates started.

The scores announced after counting by the Electoral Committee are as follows:

Anslem Ojezua -0

Felix Akhabue- 0

Philip Shaibu -1

Amb. Martins U- 0

Barr. Esene- 0

Asue. Ighodalo- 577

Hon Omosede- Withdrew

Ogbeide Ihama- Withdrew

Void votes- 6

The Primary in which Shuaibu earlier declared himself was a  parallel election organized by his supporters. It is not known if the Primary was, also, monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Igbo Group Slams Okechukwu Over Attacks On Uzodinma

0
Osita Okechukwu and Hope Uzodimma

Nigerians have been alerted to a sinister plot being hatched by a group of politicians to execute a campaign of calumny against the Imo State governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma.

Part of the campaign is to engage in spurious media attacks on the governor using the recent inconclusive Edo APC governorship primaries as a plank.

In a statement in Enugu yesterday,  a pressure cum  cultural organisation, Igbo Renaissance for Progress asserted that it has intelligence reports that former Director of Voice of Nigeria, Mr Osita Okechukwu is leading the group.

According to its coordinator, Nze Nwankwo Njoku,  Okechukwu is still sulking over his loss of ministerial appointment which he attributes to the governor.

According to Njoku,  the former VOA helmsman has vowed to do all within his power to destabilise Uzodinma in every way possible.

Said he” those who read Okechukwu’s virulent attacks on Uzodinma over the Edo debacle would understand that the man has a mission which is to damage the image of the governor who is the leader of the APC in the south east. ”

He noted that while other critics of the Edo matter restricted themselves to the issues, Okechukwu went overboard, calling for the sack of Uzodinma as Chairman of Progressive Governors Forum.

He said members of his group were alarmed by the vitriolic attacks on Uzodinma by Okechukwu showing that he was actually on the payroll of politicians envious of the rising national profile of the governor.

” We  know for a fact that that man is still embittered that Uzodinma chose Uche Nnaji over him for ministerial nomination.  But his attempts to rubbish the Imo state governor would be resisted by us”, Njoku averred.

He noted that contrary to the claims by Okechukwu, Uzodinma has used his position as chairman of Progressive Congress Forum to benefit Ndigbo and the people.

He listed the appointment of an Igbo man as chief of naval staff, the dredging of Oguta Lake to the Atlantic with the concomitant economic milestone and several other benefits as evidence of what Hope Uzodinma has done with his position.

” Indeed Okechukwu should know that APC does not revolve around him. We have more qualified stakeholders who should be respected in Igbo land. He is not a match to Uzodinma, so blackmailing him will not work “, he submitted.

He threatened that his group will declare Okechukwu a persona non grata in the south east if he doesn’t refrain from his unholy alliance with his Cohorts to destroy Uzodinma ‘s image.

Benue State Government has constituted 10 members security council to enforce ban on open grazing in the state

As its first step, the Security Council has issued a two-week ultimatum to all herders engaging in open grazing to leave the state.

Briefing journalists after the  security council meeting chaired by Governor Hyacinth Alia, the Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, disclosed that the committee has been mandated to investigate those who wrote letters inviting armed herdsmen into the state and prosecute them.

He added that the law prohibiting open grazing subsists and the security agencies have the mandate to enforce the ban, hence the two weeks grace period to exit the state or face the consequences of violating the law.

Kula said, “The council emphasized and made it abundantly clear that the Open Grazing and Ranching Establishment Law 2007 codenamed Anti-Open Grazing Law 2017 is still in force.

“Armed herders and invaders are directed to immediately leave the state. Those who invited the armed herders/invaders should immediately desist from that act.

“Those operating open grazing within the state are given two weeks ultimatum with effect from 21st of February (2024) to desist.”

Yoruba Nation Activist, Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho) In Nigeria For Mother’s Burial

By Ayodele Oni

After almost three years sojourn abroad, Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Igboho, has finally returned to Nigeria.

Igboho has been away from Nigeria since 2021, when he eloped to the Benin Republic to escape arrest after the Department of State Services, (DSS), declared him wanted.

The secret police had invaded his home in the Soka area of Ibadan, Oyo State over alleged terrorism charges and attacks on Fulani herders allegedly responsible for the unrest in the Southwest.

While attempting to travel to Germany, Igboho was arrested in Benin Republic and remanded in prison. However, he recently regained his freedom after two years in a Beninese prison.

Confirming his return, Igboho’s spokesman, Olayomi Koiki, in a terse statement via X on Thursday, said the Yoruba Nation activist was in the country for his mother’s burial.

He wrote: “I can confirm that Chief Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho is currently on his way to Igboho Town for the final burial of his mother MRS S.A.Adeyemo.

“The body of MRS S.A Adeyemo was picked up from the mortuary in Saki some few hours ago.”

It would be recalled that Igboho, while in prison at Benin Republic, lost his mother, who lived in Saki, Oyo state.

LP Reps Demand Probe Of Abure’s Arrest, Dehumanisation

Julius Abure - Arrested

The Labour Party, LP, caucus in the House of Representatives, has queried the timing and intentions of the recent arrest of Julius Abure, National Chairman of the party, in Edo state, describing it as cruel, dehumanising and an abuse of democratic ethos.

The Labour Reps expressed their dismay over the controversial arrest, in a statement on Thursday, by the caucus Leader, Afam Victor Ogene, in Abuja.

According to Tijani Momoh, spokesperson of the police for Zone 5, Edo state, Abure was arrested over a petition to the Inspector General (IG) of Police, in a case of alleged “attempted murder, conspiracy to commit dangerous harm.”

Ogene said the timing of the arrest, on the eve of LP’s primary election for the forthcoming governorship election in Edo state, which the Barrister Abure-led National Working Committee, NWC, is overseeing, exposes the ugly development as a crudely scripted political charade that offends the sensibility of every true democrat and puts to question the integrity of the police in issues that involve the political class.

The LP caucus called on the IG to investigate the underlining issues that has put the police in bad light, by “Once again soiling the institution in the mud of desperate tussle for political powers, by those who see politics as a do or die affair.”

Speaking further,  Ogene said: “There is no excuse for the manner the police conducted the ill-timed and misleading arrest of LP national chairman. If there was any need for the Police to take Barrister Abure in, a simple invitation would have sufficed.

“The inexplicable dehumanisation and brutalisation of Chief Abure was uncalled for. Democracy ought to refine our security agents and bring out the best in them, rather than enhance their biases and prejudices in the society.

“It is absolutely unlikely that the National Chairman of either the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), would suffer similar ignoble treatment in the hands of the Nigerian police.

“In deed, what was the rationale for arresting a man of Abure’s standing in society in such a gestapo manner, drag him on the streets like a common felon, only to release him in the dead of the night?

“While we cannot prevent the nation’s security agencies from carrying out their constitutional assigned roles, we insist, as a Caucus, that civility, decorum and due process must be their watchword, always.

“Consequently, it is our demand that the perpetrators of this show of shame must be brought to book, if only to serve as a potent reminder to the Government of the day, that the days of the jackboots are long over,” the statement added.

Emphasis was also placed on mutual respect ,tolerance and adherence to provincial laws and regulations with a view to preventing further escalation of violence ” the police statement noted.

The Kano State Commissioner of  Police ,who was represented by his deputy, Umar Ahmed Chuso ( DCP) while assuring all stakeholders of the readiness of the police in maintaining law and order ,protection of lives and property and fostering of harmony within the communities concerned , however called for information sharing ,collaborations and adoption of  proactive Measures in handling the complex farmer/ herder conflict.

OPINION: APC Digging Its Own Grave in Edo

0
Azu Ishiekwene

By Azu Ishiekwene

Nigeria’s politicians have perfected the art of burying themselves with one foot sticking out. And it appears that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will, once again, stage this rite of self-destruction in the forthcoming governorship election in Edo State.

The party’s primaries on Saturday was such a shambles, it has now been forced to conduct it again, with no guarantee of a sensible outcome for an exercise involving perhaps less than 500,000members (parties routinely inflate their roll). If Governor Godwin Obaseki’s ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), had paid to put a spell on APC, the outcome would not have been more potentially devastating.

Yet, this is a governor whose bet to install a successor from his own party is not necessarily based on his own record, but on the gift of an opposition in disarray.

After the turbulent last four years at Osadebey House between Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, it looked all but certain that the divided house of PDP would collapse when elections hold again in September.

And this was not wishful thinking. Not only has the common political front that paved the way for Obaseki’s ascension to power in his first term eroded; in his second term, he has been fighting both internal and external political enemies, severely limiting his attention and performance.

If his first term was uneventful, it was precisely because that was when the seed of the state’s future political crisis was sown. Even though his benefactor, former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, had installed him in office in the hope of replicating the Tinubu-Fashola model in Lagos, Obaseki had other plans.

The new “tuke-tuke”

Once he was ensconced in office, he made a point of telling the remnant of the Oshiomhole crowd still hanging around the corridors of power, that power had changed hands. No longer, he reportedly said, were the days of “tuke-tuke” politics, a carryover from the era of Tony Anenih, which former Edo State Commissioner for Information and presidential aide, Louis Odion, once described in Louis-pediaas a political variant that empowered touts and prioritised rent for politicians for doing little or no work.

Obaseki, the blue-eyed Lagos Boy and financial consultant, advertised as the answer to Edo State’s private sector woes, should know.He was a core member of Oshiomhole’s cabinet, now determined to carve his own path.

When after taking power, however, he began to cut off the supply line to the trough, starving the APC’s political structure in the state of nutrition, the battle line with Oshiomhole was drawn. The former governor who had also become the Chairman of the APC at the time, used his position to block Obaseki from getting the party’s ticket for a second term.

Obaseki of course milked public sympathy and later decamped to the PDP where he contested and won re-election. As a result of his defection, he governed with a hostile, hobbled parliament. Fourteen – and later 10 – out of the 24 members of the State House of Assembly were in the opposition and they operated mostly from a hideout provided in Abuja by Oshiomhole.

Significantly damaged in legitimacy, there was very little Obaseki could do.He has spent a greater part of the last four years watching his back for a deputy who, were he in the opposition, could not have plunged more daggers in the government’s back.

Residents have borne the brunt. Not only has Obaseki replaced the old cult of “tuke-tuke” with the new cult of “yes-men,” reports from the state also indicate that there are few paved roads and other social infrastructure such as water, hospitals, and schools, especially in areas outside the capital, Benin City.

The more you look…

Not unlike a good number of the states, the doubling of the state’s internally generated revenue from N1.8billion monthly in 2016 has barely been felt in rural areas where homes are still without water and school buildings are still largely without roofs and students without teachers.

Although Edo is currently ranked above its peers in the South-South poverty league with 1.4m (out of the state’s 3.9m population)living in multidimensional poverty, a government determined to make its mark could have done far more to lift the people.

Obaseki has done well in cultivating an elite in smart suits, while keeping up a façade of performance, especially with high-profile media events like Edo Best, Alaghodaro Summit, and the renovation of the Secretariat. But as surely as the ball of pounded yam never fails to press into the straying fish crumb in the soup, these projects have been criticised, particularly by the opposition, as the government’s conduit pipes.

Edo could not have been riper for the taking than in its present state, but Oshiomhole’s ambition may well be the wrecking ball. In my forecast entitled, “What you might expect in 2024,” published last December 28, I said, “The biggest danger to APC’s victory is Oshiomhole…except the APC finds an overwhelmingly appealing candidate, the party could be in for a surprise.”

The result of the party’s “inconclusive” primaries on Saturday, showed that the surprise came early. From reports, Oshiomhole, APC’s certified nemesis in Edo, managed to suborn forces in the Presidency to hand over the party’s flag to Dennis Idahosa – a candidate that Oshiomhole’s government had once described as “untrustworthy,” the most flattering of the government’s description at that time.

But suspects have their moments of redemption. Except that in this case reports on the conduct of the primaries on Saturday showed that even the redeemer seemed so far gone in his waywardness, he suborned not only Abuja, but also one of the most notorious political conductors to supervise the primaries.

A crime scene

The result, of course, was parallel primaries. One with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officers present – as it should be – that produced Monday Okpebholo; and the other, which invariably produced Idahosa, became a crime scene.

The outcome was neither organised, even from the point of a common heist, which it was; nor was it politically strategic. Idahosa, the beneficiary of that crime scene, is from Edo South, where Obaseki, who is backing Asue Ighodalo, a candidate from Edo Central, could significantly undermine APC’s votes.A third candidate, Anamero Dekeri, even emerged from the woodwork, to claim victory!

It’s true that whether a political party holds its primaries in the motor park or at a brothel, it is not the business of non-party members. The point, unfortunately, is that we have seen that in the end, voters pay for the travesty, corruption and incompetence in the parties.

APC should have learnt that lesson in Zamfara four years ago when a court ruling invalidated the entire state election over shambolic party primaries, never mind a recent Supreme Court ruling that has further muddied the waters.

At elections, voters often have uninspiring choices – Tweedle-dee and Tweedledum – inflicted on them by party primaries that were anything but primaries. The crimes committed by politicians behind closed doors soon become public bastards, often leading to voter apathy, bitter wranglings or needless court disputes. It’s incredible that parties that can’t even manage their own affairs want a chance on the bigger stage.

PDP may laugh – and indeed it should, as it appears that the APC has already handed it the shovel to finish off the burial rites. But with Obaseki’s deputy, Shaibu, threatening to bring down the roof, it would be interesting to see how the PDP and the Labour Party, which is also having its own troubles, organise their own primaries.

If Nigeria’s elections – party, local council, state or federal – has taught anything, it is that as surely as a stumble precedes a fall, shambolic primaries lay the foundation for turbulent electoral outcomes and unstable governments.

Once again, Edo is proving that the story is not about to change.

Fmr Gov Fayemi Blames Oshiomole For Botched Edo APC Governorship Primary

0

By Ayodele Oni

As the blame trade continues on the botched governorship primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo state, former Governor of Ekiti state, Dr Kayode Fayemi has observed that the role of Adams Oshiomole, former governor of Edo state in the exercise was questionable.

Fayemi, the ex-Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF),  commended the  Abdullahi Ganduje-led National Working Committee, (NWC) of the APC for the decision to cancel and reschedule the controversial gubernatorial primaries in Edo State.

He noted that this decision has restored the confidence of members of the Edo State chapter of the Party in a fair, impartial, and transparent exercise and showed that the APC is interested in producing a popular candidate.

Adams Oshiomhole
Adams Oshiomhole

Fayemi, in a statement on Wednesday, signed by Mallam Ahmad Sajoh, Head, his Media Office, also applauded the President and Leader of the Party, Bola Tinubu for not interfering and allowing due process on the issue of the APC gubernatorial primaries in Edo State.

“I wish to thank the President for allowing the Party to function independently on this sensitive issue and thus assure our teeming members in Edo State that the process for the gubernatorial primaries will be free, fair, and transparent.”

Fayemi, however, condemned the questionable role of Senator Adams Oshiomhole, a former Governor of the State and National Chairman of the APC, in the truncation of the initial exercise.

He recalled that Oshiomhole had also played a disruptive role in the last gubernatorial election in Edo State, which ultimately made the APC lose the state to the opposition.

“Ideally, as a leader, he should have ensured a level playing field for all the aspirants but he was trying to impose a candidate in a manner that’s not free and fair.

‘’Earlier, Oshiomhole had attempted to eliminate some aspirants from contesting in the primaries and failed. This is reminiscent of his high-handedness as National Chairman when he manipulatively schemed Governor Godwin Obaseki out of the electoral process. That action led to the unfortunate loss of Edo State by the APC.

“It would appear the ground was being prepared by Oshiomole yet again for the APC to lose the coming election in Edo state because of his unconscionable behaviour. However, the party has demonstrated independence and impartiality in cancelling and reordering the primaries.

‘’We hope the fresh primaries will now take place in an atmosphere deemed free and fair by all, for the sake of our great party.

‘’Oshiomhole may decide to support any of the aspirants if he chooses not to be neutral, but the process must be open, free, and transparent, following the laid down rules. My interest is the APC and the party must put its best foot forward in the forthcoming elections.’’
