Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has granted embattled suspended Dean of the Faculty Of Law, University of Calabar, UNICAL, Professor Cyril Ndifon, bail on health grounds.

The bail  waa granted by Justice Omotosho to enable Ndifon undergo  surgery for glaucoma.

The decision came after an application by Ndifon’s counsel, Okon Efut, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, and received no opposition from Osuobeni Akponimisingha, lawyer to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

Ndifon was granted bail to the sum of N250 million with a surety who would swear to an affidavit of means and deposit  travel documents with the court Registrar.

This bail is effective from January 10th to January 25th, aligning with the scheduled date for the bail application hearing submitted by Ndifon’s lawyer.

Efut had previously informed the court about Ndifon’s impending eye surgery and passionately appealed for bail to facilitate the surgery, although initially, the court held the bail application was premature.

Consequently, Ndifon was remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre until the Court reconvened. Amidst these proceedings, ICPC’s lawyer raised concerns about alleged threats made by one of the defense lawyers, Mr. Sunny Anyanwu, towards their star witness in a phone conversation related to the case.

Upon the Court ’s resumed hearing, Efut presented a further affidavit countering ICPC’s opposition to their bail application. Anyanwu’s absence raised questions in Court, with concerns about his non-appearance and the filings regarding the case.

Efut assured the Court of filing the necessary documents, expressing readiness for Ndifon’s release to facilitate the impending surgery. Justice Omotosho, acknowledging the urgency, agreed to release Ndifon to Efut with certain conditions and emphasized the need for an accelerated hearing. The Judge also directed ICPC to bring their witnesses for the upcoming Court  date.

UN Says Global Unemployment Rate Will Worsen In 2024

By Akinwale Kasali

The United Nation has projected that the Global Unemployment will increase drastically in 2024. It raised concerns about the stagnancy in productivity, worsening inequalities and inflation biting into disposable income.

The UN said that the World is yet to recover from the deadly Covid-19 Pandemic that crippled the economic situation of countries around the world.

It also raised concern at the ongoing geopolitical tensions and persistent inflation triggering aggressive moves by Central Banks in most part of the country of the world.

The International Labour Organization, ILO, had earlier stated that global growth in 2023 was modestly higher than anticipated, and labour markets showed surprising resilience, however, real wages declined in most of the G20 countries as wage increases failed to keep pace with inflation, said the ILO.

The 2022 global unemployment rate stood at 5.3 percent and made a modest improvement last year to 5.1 percent.

However, in 2024 an extra two million workers are expected to be looking for jobs, raising the global unemployment rate to 5.2 percent.

Disposable incomes have declined in the majority of G20 nations and, generally, the erosion of living standards resulting from inflation is “unlikely to be compensated quickly”, the ILO said.

Widening inequalities and stagnant productivity are causes for concern, the ILO said in its World Employment and Social Outlook Trends report for 2024.

The study assesses the latest labour market trends, including unemployment, job creation, labour force participation and hours worked — then links those to their social outcomes.

The report found that some of the data, notably on growth and unemployment, are “encouraging”, ILO chief Gilbert Houngbo said.

But a “deeper analysis reveals that labour market imbalances are growing and that, in the context of multiple and interacting global crises, this is eroding progress towards greater social justice”, Houngbo added.

Governor Obaseki: ”The Heart Of Man Is Desperately Wicked” – Deputy Governor Shaibu

Philip Shuaibu and Godwin Obaseki

By Adesina Soyooye

The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, stopped  short of calling his boss, the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, a wicked soul.  Shaibu, who spoke Wednesday on Arise Television lamented what he termed a monumental betrayal of him by Obaseki. The Governor is strongly opposed to Shaibu’s Governorship ambition. He said it was a shock to him that Obaseki would choose to support ‘a stranger’  instead of him, considering the financial, moral and political support he gave Obaseki, and especially in the development of Edo State.

Shaibu: “I feel betrayed by the Governor. I feel very betrayed. When we go to Church, there are certain Biblical verses that are beginning to make meaning to me. There is this particular verse that has been going through my mind – ‘The heart of man is desperately wicked.’ When I see what the Governor is doing, the verse now makes meaning to me.”

He revealed that he had no intention of becoming a Deputy Governor at the time he was approached to run with Obaseki because he was comfortable in his position as a member of the House of Representatives. He said it took one month to convince him to run with Obaseki as he was not interested.

Shaibu: “Actually, I was persuaded, and there was no protest. I, actually, didn’t want to be a Deputy Governor. I was very comfortable in the House of Representatives. It took almost one month to get me to accept to be Deputy Governor of Edo State.

“I accepted to add value to the ticket of Obaseki because Obaseki was not known and he was not one of the Politicians.  They needed a young vibrant  Politician that has won election before and that can add  political value to the ticket.

“I added value in terms of my political structure, my finances. All the vehicles that were used to campaign in 2016 were mine.

I lost about 20% of my political capital in Edo North to support Godwin Obaseki, and in supporting him even as a Deputy Governor.

“I supported the second term bid of the Governor with my finances, including  how we got the ticket of the PDP. I contributed financially both in Naira and in Dollars. If I say betrayal, it is an understatement. I feel very hurt and betrayed.”

Shaibu and Obaseki fell apart over Shaibu’s ambition to succeed him in office.

Obaseki is strongly supporting a Lagos-based Lawyer and Corporate guru, Asue Ighodalo, who already, it is said,  has the support of Edo PDP.

Former Minister of Power, Agunloye, Remanded In Prison Custody

Olu Agunloye

By Adesina Soyooye

Dr Olu Agunloye, Minister of Power and Steel under the President Olusegun Obasanjo Government, has been remanded in Prison custody.

Agunloye, also, a former Corp Marshall, was sent to Kuje Prison, Wednesday, by a Federal High Court, Abuja.

An associate and confidant of Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, Agunloye is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over allegations of a six billion Naira  fraud in the Mambilla Power Project.

Brought before the Federal High Court, Dr Agunloye pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred  against him.

But the Honourable Justice Donatus Okorowu remanded him in Prison Custody pending when argument for his bail will be entertained.

The EFCC had earlier declared him wanted for not honouring their invitation. But Soyinka had faulted the anti-graft agency for declaring a man who was not in hiding wanted.

Thereafter, Agunloye reported to the EFCC, and was granted bail on self-recognizance and released to his Lawyer, Adeola Adedipe, SAN.

However, on Wednesday when he was finally arraigned, he was sent to Kuje Correctional Center pending when he would be granted bail.

Abia: Govt, Opposition Forces Gear Up For Show  Down Over Tax Defaulters

0
Alex Otti

By Daniel Maduka

Baring any last minute mutual understanding,  the Labour Party LP controlled Abia State Government appears headed on a collision course ,with some  forces notably, rents/ taxes defaulters, strongly believed in Government circles as being goaded by perceived opposition elements.

The Source News Magazine reports that at inception late May 2023 , the Dr Alex Otti-led adminstration, worried about the poor internally generated revenues of the hugely endowed, oil rich and commercial state said to have been occasioned by a loose revenue collection system, had embarked on  rent/ tax harmonization exercise .

The exercise ostensibly muted to block leakages ,as well as prevent government revenues going in to private pockets as it has been the norm in the last few years, created two major tax payments modules- namely daily and yearly.

According to the harmonization laws , those within the daily payments bracket are to pay between # 250 and #300. While the yearly payments which captures Market stall owners, and other small scale enterprises are to pay about #19 000.annually.

However, findings have revealed abysmal compliance by taxable individuals and business entities since the coming on board of the current regime in the state ,despite several appeals by all relevant authorities.

The government it does appear is no longer finding the situation funny ,as impeccable sources have said that it is now set to go tough on defaulters and their perceived sponsors.

It was authoritatively gathered last week that the government,s resolve to adopt a tough approach in the revenue collection efforts is informed by information at its disposal suggesting that some unseen political forces may be behind the unwillingness of most of the defaulters to fulfill their civic obligations to the state .

While such perceptions may appear untenable to some people, not a few particularly keen followers of  the hitheto poor revenue collection system which had been in  place before now will readily align with  it.

For one, over the years revenue collection had been contracted out to Consultants, usually drawn from the pool of political allies and cronnies as a settlement measure.

Instructively , the Revenue- collection-for – Political settlements have been at the root of the perennial shortfalls in the internally generated revenues projections of the state ,as over 60% of revenue receipts find their way into private pockets.

Notice of government’s intentions to enforce collection was served late last year by the state’s Board of Internal Revenue BIR .

In a letter addressed to all security arms in the stated dated November 20,2023 ,Professor Ogbonnaya Udochukwu Executive Chairman Abia state BIR appealed for the understanding and support of the security agencies in the    authorities, determination to enforce collections of its statutory revenues .

The enforcement efforts which were initially scheduled to commence second week of December last week was  put on hold to allow the defaulters to conduct a hitch free festive business activities.

But reinforcing government’s  determination to go ahead with the enforcement ,the state Commissioner of Information Prince Okey Kalu at a media briefing mid December last year  warned that government will stop at nothing to collect all statutory revenues due it ,in 2024.

He stressed that the Government will  not be able to deliver on its responsibilities if the people continue to shy away from their civic obligations .

An authoritative source has revealed that Government is greatly miffed by available intelligence at its  disposal high lighting the negative roles  allegedly being played by some opposition forces in discouraging and sabotaging the revenue collection exercise with a view to frustrating its efforts at re engeernering the state.

“We are aware that some forces who took the state on many years of retrogressive journey, particularly those  who before now had been feeding fat through revenue collection contracts, are out to sabotage the efforts of the authorities, aiming to bring back the old order.

The underlying intintention are to ensure that government is denied the necessary  funds, frustrate the system and thereafter go to town to mouth that the government has failed.

It is a grand plot not only to frustrate and discredit the state government ,but  also Labour party as a whole.

But we are equal to the challenge, because no body can stop the march towards retrieving  Abia from the precipice. We are therefore appealing to the people to show understanding and support the government in the little areas they  required by extant laws and shun being used by some yesterday dark forces to derail the system.”. the source stated

Already,The Source News Magazine’s findings have revealed that the short falls in the internally generated revenue projections is already taking its toll on the abilities of the government to meet some essential parts of its electioneering promises to the people.

One of such was the promise to off set before December 2023 ending several months of backlog of salaries and pensions inherited from previous regimes.

But in his New year message January 1 2024 ,Dr Otti was to apologize for his government to fulfill his earlier promise.

He blamed the situation on the overwhelming nature of the amount involved ,as against earlier projections .

Although that as at the time of reporting on Tuesday January 9 2024, none of ever vociferous opposition forces ,particularly the Peoples Democratic Party PDP could volunteer an open response, they however advised the government to admit and apologize to the people over his lackluster performance so far ,instead of embarking on wide goose chase of shopping for non existent political enemies.

“If you ask me , my simple response is and will continue to be that our Governor is his own worst enemy. His government is faltering because he is not driven by genuine intentions.

A system was in place which he inherited .Instead of standing on the existing protocol before effecting changes ,they threw away everything, and turned   round to apportion blames .And like former Governor TA Orji once said – Otti should carry his cross” a PDP chieftain stated

Although, the lone LP Governor has promised end of the first quarter if the year as the new date , how he finally grapple with the situation will have a far reaching implications on public perceptions of his fledging regime .

Poverty Alleviation Scam: PDP Insists Interior Minister Culpable

0
Olubunmi Tunji Ojo

By Ayodele Oni

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has insisted that Interior Minister, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, is equally culpable in the poverty alleviation scam on which his colleague in charge of humanitarian affairs, Betta Edu has been suspended.

It has, therefore, demanded for the immediate suspension, investigation and possible prosecution of Tunji-Ojo over his reported involvement in the alleged siphoning of N438 million poverty alleviation fund.

The Party, in a statement on Tuesday, by its spokesman, Debo Ologunagba described as inexcusable that the two ministers directly entrusted with the wellbeing of Nigerians reportedly used a company in which the Minister of Interior has huge interest to allegedly siphon funds meant for poor Nigerians under the guise of consultancy fee for unsubstantiated verification of households in the country.

The PDP asked that President Bola  Tinubu take immediate action to protect the resources meant for the wellbeing of poor Nigerians from further plundering by suspending the Interior Minister over the alleged fraud and hand him over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for investigation like his suspended counterpart.

“Nigerians are appalled by the lame excuse by Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo in claiming that he has no interest in the company despite his confession of owning huge shares in the firm; a channel through which he allegedly benefitted immensely from the said fraudulent consultancy fee payment.

“Such apparent money laundering stunt is again consistent with the crafty character and proclivity of the APC for plundering of public resources.

“This is especially given allegations in the public space that bulk of the money was diverted to private accounts of cronies of prominent APC leaders in the National Assembly and the Presidency.

“The PDP challenges the Interior Minister to publish the details of the due process certification documents, the scope of job, the experts and modules used as well as particulars of the 11 million Nigerian households claimed to have been verified within a space of one month.

“The continuing stay in office of Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo as Minister of Interior can only further confirm PDP’s position that the Tinubu-led APC administration is a haven for treasury looters.

“The PDP asserts that the only way President Tinubu can reassure Nigerians is to immediately relieve the Minister of Interior and allow for an independent inquiry into the disbursement of the N438 million with the view to not only exposing and prosecuting all those involved in the alleged scam but also to recover and channel the money for the wellbeing of Nigerians.”

Afenifere: There Should Be No Sacred Cow In Ministry Of Humanitarian Affairs Scam, Queries N4 Billion Verification Fee

By Ayodele Oni

Afenifere, a Yoruba socio cultural group, has advised President Bola Tinubu to ensure that all those linked with the ministry of humanitarian affairs financial scam are brought to book.

The group was of the view that this is the only way, Nigerians will see Tinubu as being committed to the fight against corruption.

In a statement on Tuesday, signed by the organizing secretary of the group, Kole Omololu  stated that “As an organization deeply committed to the progress and well-being of our nation, we are ready to provide our support in the battle against corruption.

“We strongly believe that eradicating corruption is essential for creating an environment that promotes sustainable development, equal opportunities, and social justice for all Nigerians.

“Therefore, we urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to reaffirm his dedication, along with his government, to the growth and advancement of Nigeria.

“As the President and Commander-in-Chief of Nigeria, President Tinubu must show the determination and resolve to address the critical issue of corruption, which has plagued our beloved country for far too long.

“Corruption remains a significant barrier to our nation’s development and hampers our collective aspirations. It is imperative that we confront this issue directly and foster a society where corruption has no room to thrive.

“We firmly believe that adopting a zero-tolerance approach to corruption is vital in achieving this goal. Given recent revelations regarding alleged corruption within the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, we urge the President to initiate a thorough investigation into these allegations.

“It is crucial to meticulously examine every aspect of the ministry’s financial transactions to ensure transparency and accountability.

“Additionally, we call for a comprehensive investigation into the financial transactions associated with the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, as well as a forensic audit of the ministry and the companies involved in the excessively inflated consultancy’s verification fees.

“Afenifere raises concerns about the expenditure of almost 4 billion naira solely for verifying

beneficiaries and questions how much money will be left to be disbursed to the verified beneficiaries from the limited resources of the country.

“We firmly believe that no one should be exempt from this investigation, as the government under President Tinubu’s leadership must set an example and demonstrate unwavering commitment to the principles of good governance.

“Furthermore, we emphasize the importance of conducting this investigation without any interference or bias, ensuring a fair and just process.

“The Nigerian people have entrusted President Tinubu with their confidence, and it is his responsibility to uphold that trust by demonstrating a commitment to transparency and accountability.”

Pa Reuben Fasoranti, Afenifere Leader, has called on President Bola Tinubu to wield the big stick and not exempt anyone found culpable in the alleged N585 million fraud in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, headed by suspended Minister, Betta Edu.

However, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has quizzed the Chief Executive Officers and Managing Directors of Zenith Bank, Providus Bank, and Jaiz Bank in connection with the over N44 billion fraud allegedly uncovered in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

An EFCC source disclosed that Zenith, Providus, and Jaiz banks are being questioned over the alleged ₦44.5bn fraud uncovered in the Ministry involving Edu and Shehu, the embattled Co-ordinator and Chief Executive Officer of the National Social Investment Programme Agency, NSIPA.

The source said, “The CEOs and MDs of Zenith Bank, Providus Bank, and Jaiz Bank are currently being grilled by our interrogators here at the headquarters.

“They were invited and are being probed in connection with the uncovered ₦44bn fraud and the ₦585million involving Halima Shehu and Betta Edu”, the source disclosed.
