Edo Government Tackles APC Aspirant On Marginalization Of Orhionmwon LG

Ize Iyamu

By Ayodele Oni

Edo State Government and a Governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have engaged in brickbats over alleged marginalization and under- development of Orhionmwon Local Government Area of the State.

The APC aspirant, Pastor Osagie Iyamu, had alleged during a television interview that development had eluded the area following alleged neglect by previous administrations in the State.

The State Government, through the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare in an open letter to Iyamu accused him of not being conversant with programmes of the present administration in the area.

According to the commissioner, the local government in question has been unlucky over the years as a result of the quality of leadership it has been saddled with; including Iyamu.

He stated that politicians from the area had in the past occupied positions in the state and federal level including Chief of Staff, minister, deputy governor and secretary to state government and they failed to facilitate development to the area.

“Curiously, all these people are members of the opposition party in the State, the All Progressives Congress (APC). Yet you, my brother, claims that the LGA has been marginalized, when all these people have held critical positions in Edo State before now.

“Governor Godwin Obaseki has barely served for eight years and has brought so much development and impactful projects to the local council which is currently benefitting our people and improving the lives of thousands of residents in the LGA.

“It is incontrovertible that Governor Obaseki has continued to blaze the trail, embarking on bold and transformative projects that have benefited millions of Edo people, including the good people Orhionmwon, our Constituency.

“The governor’s track record of inclusivity and good governance speaks to his sincere intentions over the past seven years that have translated to the progress recorded across all sectors of the State, from agriculture to education, health and technology, among others, and Edo people and Orhionmwon people are aware of these facts.

“It is clear that Obaseki’s legacies cannot be blemished. Edo people know the truth and will not be deceived.”

By Daniel Maduka

Rising from an enlarged Stakeholders parley of Kano All Progressive Congress APC on Thursday January 25 2024 ,the National Chairman Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has formally called on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to dump his New Nigeria Peoples Party NNPP and join the APC .

This is even as Dr Ganduje noted that APC has commenced moves and talks which will culminate in some Governors, Senators and other high profile political office holders from other parties across the country joining the APC family.

” Talks with other political parties nationwide have reached advanced stage . And very soon Governors and Law makers from other political parties will join us.

We are calling on the Governor of Kano state and all the supporters of the NNPP to join APC

“We are assuring the Governor of Kano of a very conducive environment . His coming to APC ,will strengthen the party at the state and national levels, and will in turn drive development in kano,” Ganduje stated

The APC National Chairman further noted that the party is aggressively pursuing its  target of enlisting more members across the country, adding that the APC will soon embark on e – registration of its members.

“Our doors and hands are open in APC to welcome every body and groups willing to come on board . We assure them of equal opportunities and treatment . In kano ,our aim is to have a one party state, which we believe will be in the over all good of our people.” Ganduje stated

The Source reports that the Thursday January 25 enlarged stakeholders meeting which was attended by the Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, leader of the northern caucus at the House of Representatives Alhassan Doguwa ,the APC Kano executives and host of others ,was a follow up to a stake holders meeting held in Abuja last week to review the affairs of the party in kano after its loss of the state,s gubernatorial contest.

The Kano APC is believed, strongly, to be under presidential pressure to seek ways of accommodating Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and his NNPP followers ,a development which is said not to be sitting well with many APC Stakeholders in the State.

“Don’t  Make Jonathan’s Mistake”, APC Chieftain Warns Tinubu In An Open Letter

0
Hon Seyi Olorunsola and President Bola Tinubu

A Chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Hon. Seyi Olorunsola, has raised concerns over the influx of people from the opposition joining the Party and immediately given a sense of belonging by the leadership of the Party.

He lamented that it poses a threat to the Party and sends a wrong signal to some ardent supporters of the Party who had stood with the Party through the thick and thin.

Olorunsola said that neglecting these people will bring about discord and discontent in the Party.

In an Open letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the APC Chieftain stressed that he was not criticizing or undermining the leadership of the President, but as a concerned member of the Party wishes to draw his attention to certain  developments within the party.

Olorunsola implored the President to consider the potential repercussions of this political strategy that may be inadvertently sowing seeds of discord within the Party.

He said the political prowess and strategic acumen of the former Lagos State Governor has undeniably contributed to the success of the Party, but warns that the recent overtures towards opposition party figures, “while ostensibly aimed at broadening the party’s base, might have unintended consequences”, and asked the President not to repeat the same mistake former President Jonathan made and lost the 2015 Presidential Election.

“The quest to weaken the opposition should not come at the cost of alienating your core supporters – those who have stood with you through thick and thin.  On the other hand, it is crucially important to lead a nation with a vibrant opposition otherwise we might have the tendency to pander towards a one-party state.  The plurality of Nigeria and its diversity requires that multi-party democracy be allowed to thrive.

“It is acknowledged that the political landscape is dynamic, and alliances may shift. Nevertheless, it is crucial to recognize that those who opposed these opposition figures in previous elections have been stalwart supporters of the APC. For instance, despite the political pressures and negative campaigns against you in the North West, particularly in Kano State, the then-Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, our current Party Chairman, ensured that you received the highest number of votes in that region and the country at large.

“Attempting to bring opposition politicians into the APC might be seen as a noble idea, but there is a delicate balance to maintain. The risk of breeding discontent within the party and diminishing the enthusiasm of your ardent supporters must be carefully considered. The biblical adage that “there is a way that seems right to a man but the end is destruction” should resonate as a cautionary tale.

“As the 2027 political permutations loom, it is imperative to focus on policy and good governance rather than political realignments. Recent policy decisions, such as the fuel subsidy removal and currency convergence, have had adverse effects on the purchasing power and economic fortunes of Nigerians. This critical juncture demands a steadfast commitment to governance, ensuring that the welfare of the people remains a top priority.

“It is with great concern that I note a potential decline in your popularity in the North West, especially in Kano State. Urgent steps are needed to address this matter as it poses a threat to the overall cohesion and success of the APC. Drastic political maneuvers, such as attempting to woo Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso from the NNPP into the APC, may lead to unintended consequences.

“The intricate political calculations surrounding the potential entry of NNPP members into the APC require a careful evaluation. A projected 40% withdrawal of APC members if NNPP joins, coupled with a 25% resistance from NNPP members to decamp, underscores the complexity of such a move. Notably, the control of the government of Kano State by NNPP members adds an additional layer of intricacy.

“It must be noted, Mr. President that the pattern of voting now have left the hands of the political bigwigs who are being sought after like new brides today.  The grassroots is now what determines the direction of voting.  So sound policies and good governance is what truly attract people to join our movement now.  The political bigwigs that are now desperate for power are doing so not for the people but for power and vengeance.  With the right mix of policy and good governance in place, 50% of the opposition in the last general elections will be forced to join your movement and they will give you a fresh mandate in 2027 instead of bringing in the politicians who worked against your victory in the last elections”.

Olorunsola stressed that drawing parallels with the experience of former Kano State Governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, who suffered a loss of political relevance in Kano after decamping to the PDP, serves as a cautionary tale, adding that the loyalty and sincerity of the immediate past Governor of Kano State, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje emerge as crucial factors in restoring and maintaining political stability in the region, stressing that  history provides valuable lessons, and it is essential to learn from the mistakes of past leaders.

“Former President Jonathan’s empowerment of the opposition ultimately became his undoing during the 2015 General Elections. Strategic considerations must not compromise the unity and strength of the APC.

“Mr. President, I have been an ardent follower of your vision right from your days as the Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007; I have always appreciated your policy thrusts and your style of governance and it is out of my love for your leadership acumen and enormous respect that I have for you that has motivated me to write this letter.

“I would not want a situation where all those who love you and voted for you in the North West, particularly in Kano State to be disappointed with the way they perceive that you are ignoring their efforts by trying to bring in to the fulcrum of your administration men and women who were in opposition to you before now.  The adage which says, “it is not proper to see a new bride and abandon the old one because the new one looks more beautiful and younger than the old one” should not become the lot of your millions of admirers”.

He concluded by urging President Tinubu to reflect on the potential ramifications of current political strategies, whose goal is for a stronger and more inclusive APC.

He also urged the President and the Party to focus on good governance, policy implementation, and securing the welfare of Nigerians, as it navigates the intricate political landscape.

He added that unity within the APC should be prioritized to ensure a formidable and unassailable party as the 2027 elections approaches.

Tinubu’s Administration Owes Nigerians An Explanation For The NNPC $3.3bn Emergency Loan

0

By Atiku Abubakar

In what appears to be a landmark economic decision of the Bola Tinubu-led administration, the Federal Government last year, precisely on August 16, 2023 through the Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) secured a $3.3 billion emergency crude repayment loan, which according to the NNPC, was to help give support to the Naira and stabilize the Foreign Exchange market.

The curious thing about this transaction is that up till now, the Federal Government continues to keep mum about it, and the only information available to the public on the mega deal is coming only through unofficial sources from the NNPC.

The deal is supposed to be a crude-for-cash loan arranged by the African Export-Import Bank.

According to information available, a Special Purpose Vehicle called Project Gazelle Funding Limited is driving the deal, and it was incorporated in the Bahamas.

The SPV is the borrower while the NNPC is the sponsor, with an agreement to pay with crude oil to the SPV in order to liquidate the loan at an interest rate that is a little over 12 per cent.

What is even more confounding about this deal is why the Federal Government would register a company in the Bahamas, knowing full well the recent scandal of the Paradise Papers that involved that country.

Curiously also, Nigeria’s current Barrels Produced Daily (BPD) is 1.38 million, and according to the Project Gazelle deal, Nigeria is to supply 90,000 Barrels of its daily production, starting from 2024 till it is up to 164.25 million barrels for the repayment of the loan.

Now, this is where the details get disturbing because Nigeria’s benchmark for the sale of crude per barrel in 2024 is $77.96. A simple multiplication of that figure by 164.25 will give us a whooping $12bn.

It is on this note that we are calling on the Federal Government to speak up on this shady deal.

It is inconceivable that the Federal Government will lead the country to take a loan of $3.3b with an interest rate that is not more than 12 per cent, but with estimated repayment amounting to $12bn.

That is a humongous differential of about $7b between what is in the details of the deal on paper and what indeed is the reality.

There are questions to be answered on the integrity of this deal, and we earnestly request the Federal Government to talk directly on these cloudy details behind the deal.

We therefore demand, on behalf of the ordinary people of Nigeria, that the Federal Government provides answers to the following questions.

  1. Has the Federal Government accessed the loan?
  1. Is the loan in the government’s borrowing plan as approved by the National Assembly?
  1. Who are the parties to the loan, and what specific roles are they expected to play?
  1. What are the conditions to the loan, including tenor, repayment terms, the collateral, and the interest rate?
  1. And, lastly, why register an SPV in the Bahamas knowing the recent scandal of the country’s notoriety for warehousing unclean assets?

Abubakar, Presidential Candidate of the PDP in the 2023 Election was Nigeria’s Vice President. 1999-2007.

A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon Seyi Olorunsola, has called for unity within the party to make it stronger and prepare for future elections.

In an open letter to President Bola Tinubu, Olorunsola cautioned that “some recent overtures towards opposition party figures, while ostensibly aimed at broadening the party’s base, might have unintended consequences.”

He added that “The quest to weaken the opposition should not come at the cost of alienating your core supporters – those who have stood with you through thick and thin.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State

By Ayodele Oni

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has said with the Supreme Court Judgement which confirmed his victory as governor, he has overcome one of the distractions of his administration.

He said his victory at the Supreme Court has laid to rest the legal battles that added to the distractions his administration grappled with in the last eight months, and prayed that the remaining issue will be handled by God.

Apparently reacting to the unending feud between him and his immediate predecessor, Nyesome Wike, Fubara while reacting to the judgement declared that “We will address our state very soon on the victory, but for now, let everybody be happy that one elephant is out of the road, the other one, by God’s help, will be resolved amicably and the family will be one.”

He, however, declared his resolve to remain committed to the purpose for which he was elected, saying he would not allow anything to distract governance of the state.

The Supreme Court, on Thursday, dismissed an appeal by the All Progressives Congress candidate in the Rivers State governorship election, Tonye Cole.

Fubara stated that “About an hour ago, the Supreme Court revalidated our mandate in the election. It is a victory for the entire state.

“It is important for us to note that we need this victory to consolidate the purpose of governance. Prior, we have had a few distractions here and there.

“And the good news that came to us this morning is a refreshing strength that will encourage us to continue the good works in governance.”

Fubara thanked God and President Bola Tinubu for his fatherly role concerning the internal crisis and the litigation against his election.

He also expressed gratitude to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, whom he described as his “Oga” for all his support.

The Governor called on everyone to join hands with his administration to build a competitive state that will be reckoned with as truly prosperous in all ramifications.

“We have a dream of making it a highly competitive state that will measure, if not up to Lagos but close to becoming like Lagos. We can only achieve this in an atmosphere of peace.

“So I am calling on everyone, not just on our internal issue but those members from other parties, the issue is settled,  come and let’s build the Rivers State of our dream.

“We will continue to protect and provide the basic needs of governance to everyone who is doing business and who lives in Rivers State.”

DHQ Vows To Destroy ‘Cancer Of Terrorism’ As Blood Flows On The Plateau

0

The Defence Headquarters, DHQ, says all is being done by the armed forces to end terrorism and insecurity in the country.

The DHQ gave the assurance on Thursday in Abuja while briefing journalists on the ongoing military operations in the country, saying the military will not relent in its effort to make the country safe for the citizens.

Vowing to “destroy the cancer of terrorism” the armed forces said insurgency has made life unbearable for Nigerians, particularly in the north and the south east, urging Nigerians to provide information to assist security forces on their job.

Security forces have come under severe criticism form many Nigerians in the light of the killings in Plateau state recently.

On December 24, close to 200 persons were massacred by unknown gunmen who also left destroyed houses in their wake after attacking many villages in the state.

The suspected terrorists would return on Wednesday, January 24 to unleash mayhem in the state killing over 30 persons, leaving many other residents injured.

Not a few Nigerians have blamed the repeated attack on the slow response of the security forces fighting terrorists in the area.

But the military said its job has been made difficult by the failure by residents to provide information which can assist the military to root out the menace on terrorism.

They however assured that terrorists would be rooted out from the country in a matter of time.

Major Gen Edward Buba, the Director Media Operations, DMO, Major General Edward Buba who addressed journalists said the military is not unaware of the enormous responsibility of safeguarding the citizens.

He said: “Indeed, we may not have all the answers now. However, we assure citizens that we are working assiduously to address the situation both in the immediate and long term to ensure the safety of lives and property. We are redoubling our efforts to ensure citizens live in a peaceful environment and have a prosperous life. This is achievable and we are focused on achieving it.

“The armed forces would destroy the cancer of terrorism that is ravaging our country thereby creating situations such as is ongoing in the Plateau State. The situation of insecurity that we are confronted with is self-inflicted by our own citizens upon one another. Nevertheless, It is our duty to protect citizens and create a safe environment for them to have a prosperous future.

“We do not take lightly the privilege and enormous responsibility of safeguarding our citizens. It is for this reason that, we constantly rejig our operational strategies in order to adopt the best course of action that would make these ugly experiences a thing of the past.

“Accordingly, we have deployed special forces to some of the hotspots in order to conduct targeted operations. We have also deployed several battlefield enablers to enhance intelligence and strike capability on these terrorists. We are encouraging the warring fractions to shield their swords.

“As for the FCT and environs, offensive operations are ongoing at the following locations; Cashew Forest, Kwaku, Gwombe, Gadoro and Tukuba all in Kuje Area Council. Other areas covered were Kawu, Igu, Tokulo, Gaba, Zuma 1 and Zuma 2, Shere, Mpape, Jikoko, Berger Quarry and Nukuchi Villages all in Bwari Area Council of FCT.

“In neighbouring states to the FCT such as Niger State. Troops are conducting operations in; Gauraka, Apo Forest, Gyedna/Sabon Wusa and Garam in Tafa LGA of Niger State. Additionally, troops covered Numan and Basa in Akwanga and Nasarawa LGAs of Nasarawa State respectively.

“As for the situation in the North Central, tension broke out in MANGU in the early hours of 23 Jan 24. The situation escalated and resulted in the breakdown of law and order in MANGU Town and adjoining communities. The crisis which started from GANGARAN KWATA escalated to other parts of MANGU LGA despite concerted efforts by troops deployed to the general area to restore normalcy,” Buba said.

Beggars in Oyo State

By Ayodele Oni

The war against street begging in Oyo state is intensifying. The State Government has just announced that it intercepted a cartel, which specializes on ferrying people from the Northern part of the country to the State for the purpose of begging.

This is just as 32 suspected beggars were raided in Ibadan metropolis for allegedly violating the law banning street begging in the State.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Mrs. Toyin Balogun disclosed this at Akinyele resettlement centre, Ibadan, where the beggars were lodged.

She added that the suspects were apprehended on Thursday afternoon during a special raid carried out by officers of the Ministry and security agents between in the metropolis.

According to Balogun, the State Government frowned at the menace, which has become an eye sore in the society, stressing that it is a crime to beg on the streets in Oyo State.

The commissioner stressed that the menace was not only affecting the beauty of highways but a risk to the beggars lives as they can be knocked down or crushed by speeding vehicles.

She explained that the State Government was working on making the Resettlement centre at Akinyele more conducive for these set of people, adding that food will be provided for them, while they undergo vocational training on simple, but profitable crafts for their source of livelihood.

By Akinwale Kasali

Suspended University of Calabar, UNICAL, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Cyril Ndifon and one of his Lawyers, Sunny Anyanwu, have been remanded in Kuje Correctional Center by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja. Both were remanded on Thursday, pending the hearing of their bail application.

Justice Omotosho gave the order after Ndifon was re-arraigned alongside Anyanwu on an amended four-count charge bordering on alleged sexual harassment and an attempt to perverse the cause of justice.

Anti-Graft Agency, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, is the complainant. Ndifon and Anyanwu are 1st and 2nd defendants in the amended charge marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/511/2023.

In count one, Ndifon is alleged to have, between May and September 2023, while being in the employment of UNICAL as Dean of Faculty of Law, caused one Miss TKJ (not real name), a diploma student of the university, to send pornographic, indecent and obscene photographs of herself to him through his mobile telephone number: 08037066222 video WhatsApp charts.

The offence is said to be contrary to and punishable under Section 24 of the Cybercrime (Prohibition & Prevention) Act 2015.

In count three, the lawyer is alleged to have, sometime in November 2023 or thereabout, in Abuja during the pendency of the charge filed against Ndifon and on the prompting of the professor, called one of the prosecution witnesses on her mobile telephone.

Anyanwu is alleged to have threatened her not to honour the invitation of the ICPC in respect of the criminal investigation against Ndifon, which conduct he knew was intended to perverse the cause of justice.

The offence is said to be punishable under Section 182 of the Penal Code Cap. 532 Laws of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, 2006.

It would be recalled that Justice Omotosho had on January 10th, 2024, ordered the release of Ndifon on a temporary bail to enable him go for a glaucoma surgery.

Upon his re-arrangement Thursday, he was, again,  remanded in prison custody.

FG Fixes March For Commencement Of Negotiation On New Minimum Wage

0

By Ayodele Oni

The federal government has announced a tentative date for the commencement of negotiation with labour unions on the new minimum wage.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation,  Mohammed Idris, disclosed on Thursday that negotiation will commence in March.

Idris stated this during his remark at the 21st Daily Trust Dialogue and presentation of 2023 African Award of the year  in Abuja.

The dialogue, with the theme “Tinubu’s Economic Reforms: Gainers and Losers”, was organized by the Media Trust Group.

According to Idris, when the Fuel Subsidy was removed, President Bola Tinubu initially promised to pay N25,000 wage award to workers to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal.

“But labour was not comfortable. We entered into negotiation with the Labour and after long discussion with them and President Tinubu, we arrived and agreed at N35,000 which was accepted.

“And the President said the N35,000 will be paid for six months to cushion the effects of the removal of fuel subsidy. That would be from September 2023 to February 2024.

“So after the payment of wage award for six months; in March, the government and labour will come together again to deliberate on a new minimum wage for workers.

“However, it is important for Nigerians to understand the intention of Tinubu to address the welfare and wellbeing of all Nigerians. I know it is not easy but Nigerians will be better for it.

“I want to call on Nigerians to give President Tinubu the time to make things right for the country.”
