By Ayodele Oni

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Leader in Edo State, Senator Adams Oshiomhole and the party’s standard bearer in the forthcoming gubernatorial election, Senator Monday Okpebholo have embraced peace, ahead of the election.

Oshiomole has written a letter to congratulate Okpebholo on his emergence as the candidate of the party.

The former governor’s annoited candidate for the position, Dennis Idahosa was first declared winner of the governorship primary but the result was annulled by the national leadership of APC, which faulted the process of his emergence and ordered fresh one.

Idahosa has however been picked as the running mate of Okpebholo, in a unanimous decision by the leadership.

Oshiomhole, in a congratulatory message personally signed by him and made available to the press by his senior aide, Victor Oshioke, on Monday, in Abuja, said that Okpebholo’s victory in the primary election was a reflection of the belief of the party members in his unwavering dedication and commitment to the party.

He however urged the APC candidate to put aside the intrigues of the primary poll and extend a hand of fellowship to his co-contestants and all the stakeholders of the party in the state.

The former governor pointed out that together the party must forge a strong, united front that resonated with the electorate and secured victory in the Edo governorship election.

He commended Okpebholo for choosing his closest rival in the primary election,  Idahosa, as his running mate, saying his decision demonstrated great wisdom and foresight.

“I extend my heartfelt congratulations on your well-deserved emergence as the flag bearer of our esteemed party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), for the forthcoming Edo State governorship election.

“Your victory in the closely contested primaries reflects the belief of our party members in your unwavering dedication and commitment to our party’s core values.

“As we embark on this crucial journey, I urge you to leave behind the intrigues of the primaries and extend a hand of fellowship to all those who contested with you for the ticket, as well as to all stakeholders of our party in the state.

“Together, we must forge a strong, united front that resonates with the electorate and secures victory in the governorship election on September 21, 2024.

“Your decision to choose Hon. Dennis Idahosa as your running mate, demonstrates great wisdom and foresight. Your joint ticket presents the people of Edo State with the best option to usher in a dynamic, progressive, and responsive government that aligns with the aspirations of our vibrant youth population.

“I am confident in your leadership abilities and believe that, with the support of all APC members across the state, we can restore Edo State to the path of progressive governance, sustainable socio economic growth and political inclusion in all its ramifications.

“Congratulations once again, as I eagerly anticipate our collective efforts towards achieving victory in the upcoming election.”

Charles Soludo - Governor of Anambra State

By Akinwale Kasali

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has said the hardship faced by Nigerians as a result of the economic woes bedeviling the nation as an inevitable pain.

The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, said the biting economic state of the nation is for the betterment of the nation as it is a phase that remains inevitable.

Making this assertion in an interview on Channels Television, Soludo said this is a phase needed before the country begins to flourish.

He said, “You see, sometimes, I kind of feel we don’t get it.”

On the nation’s economy, Soludo likened the country’s situation to a patient undergoing treatment.

He said, “But whether there will be pains for any step you take or the other, it is going to be. It is inevitable. But that is obviously what we need to pass through,” he said, maintaining that President Bola Tinubu inherited a bad economy upon assumption of office in May 2023.

“We must realise that things were really bad. We must get it clear that there is no easy way to get this patient who has multiple problems [to become better],” Soludo added.

Soludo, who is marking his second year in office, also spoke about his achievements since 2022, adding that his government has created jobs for the masses.

”In the first nine months of coming into office, we have employed over 5,000 teachers and processing 2,000 more.

“Nigerians Want To Know Their Actual Population”, Deputy Speaker House Of Reps Tells NPC

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Benjamin Kalu has called on the National Population Commission, NPC to, this time around, avail Nigeria its actual numerical strength.

This is even as he has commended Ndigbo for refraining from the ongoing nationwide protest against the prevailing economic hardship.

Kalu, representing Bende Federal Constituency of Abia state, who spoke at an inauguration dinner for Chief Emmanuel Trump  Eke, the Commissioner representing Abia State on the new Board of NPC held in Abuja at the weekend ,said that knowing the accurate population figure remains an essential part of planning and spread of infrastructural facilities across the country.

According to him, it is no longer  viable to be predicating the country’s economic planning policies on estimated population figure ,adding that it is high time the narrative was changed .

In a statement issued on Sunday March 17 2024 by  his Media Adviser, Levinus Nwabuighiogu, the Deputy Speaker stressed that the foundation of the country’s economic planning is knowing the accurate population, and the country’s demographic structure.

” The charge to you people as Commissioners is to be honest. We don’t know our number in Nigeria. We can not be claiming that we are the giant of Africa when we don’t have an accurate statistics of our number as a Nation.

It is embarrassing . Each time they ask you of your population, you say about”…..That descriptive thing to our number? You people should make it exact .

When we call Ogun state ,you tell us the number . We call Abia ,you tell us.Total number in the South East ,you give us .Total in the South West ,North West, South South etc you give us so that we can plan because economic planning without actual knowledge of the population is a waste of time .

So the root of our economic planning is knowing our number and demography ,so that when we want do project allocation, the spread will be guided by the population. So census is what you have to do as a service to this nation.

Push it hard and make sure that when the result comes ,Nigerians will be glad to say yes ; we are 250 million. But I can assure you by the time you are done ,we might be 300 million ” Kalu stated.

The Deputy Speaker who noted that the present hard economic situation ,predated president Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s administration, expressed happiness that Ndigbo are not participating in the protest marches rocking some parts of the country.

While assuring that the Federal Government is working towards finding a lasting solution to the the problems facing the country, Rt Hon Kalu urged Ndigbo to continue to lend support to President Tinubu as according to him, the administration has so far giving a sense of belonging to the South Easterners.

” The president has shown us love despite the fact that we did not vote as we ought to have voted .He has shown us great love and it is about time we also reciprocated”

Ijaw Youth Council Condemns Killing Of Soldiers, Wants Perpetrators Brought To Book; Falana Urges End To Reprisal Attack

Soldiers Killed in Delta State

By Akinwale Kasali

The Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, has condemned the killings of 16 Army Personnel in Okuama community, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.

The Soldiers were on a Peace and Rescue Mission in the Community before they met their untimely end.

In a statement by Doubra Okotete, Omoghomi Olu-Derimon and Luguard Izoukumor, Chairman, Secretary and Information Officer, respectively, IYC described the killing as barbaric and wicked.

The statement reads, “While we do not want to support the decision of the military to burn down the entire Okuama community and leave the already impoverished inhabitants to suffer, we wish to call on the Delta State government to swing into action and protect the lives of the innocent people in the area.

“It is also pertinent to clarify that the Okuama community where this sad event occurred is an Urhobo-speaking community in Ughelli South LGA, and not an Ijaw community.

“We are, therefore, using this medium to call on Governor Oborevwori and the Nigerian security agencies to investigate and bring to book the perpetrators of the heinous act.”

Following this development, there has been reprisal attack, prompting Legal Luminary and Human Rights Lawyer, Femi Falana, to call on the Federal Government to put an end to the reprisal attacks by soldiers of the Nigerian Army in the Okuama community of Ughelli South Local Government Area in Delta State.

Falana, who made this call in a statement on Sunday, said, “Unfortunately, some villages were attacked last night by angry soldiers. After the attack, the villages were set on fire during the nocturnal military invasion.

“Having regard to the destruction of Odi and Zaki Biam over the killing of soldiers, the authorities ought to have taken adequate measures to prevent the attack and burning of the affected villages. It is unfortunate that the Federal Government has not issued any statement on the barbaric incident.

“ In view of the tragic turn of events, I call on the military authorities to halt the destruction of the properties of innocent people in the warring communities. It ought to be pointed out that collective punishment is a serious offence under domestic and international law.

Therefore, the Delta State Government should ensure that the murder suspects and arsonists among the civilians and soldiers are fished out and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to other criminal elements in society.

“Once again, I commiserate with the bereaved families of the slain officers and soldiers. Since they were brutally killed in the course of duty, the Federal Government and the Delta State Government should compensate the dependents of the deceased military officers and soldiers. Compensation should also be extended to the victims of reprisal attacks by angry soldiers.”

On the killing of the officers and soldiers, Falana said, “We join the members of civilized humanity in condemning the brutality meted out to the military officers and soldiers as they were deployed for a peacekeeping mission to resolve the crisis in two warring communities in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State.

“We are , however, pleased to note that the military remains focused and committed to its mandate of maintaining peace and security in the country.

“ Having regard to the massacre of innocent people when the military invaded Odi in Bayelsa State and Zaki Biam in Benue State in similar circumstances, we commend the military authorities for resisting the temptation to subject the two warring communities to a reprisal attack. By all means, the army should avoid a repeat of the history of having multiple tragedies.

“We have confirmed that, in line with the directive of the Chief of Defense Staff, Gen. Gwabim Musa, some of the gunmen involved in the heinous crime have been arrested.

“The Delta State Government, the respective local governments, and the leaders of two warring communities should assist the police in identifying and isolating the remaining reckless murderers and unraveling the motive behind the heinous crime.

“While we commiserate with the Nigerian Army and the bereaved families of the slain military officers and soldiers, we call on the authorities of the Nigeria Police Force to ensure that a thorough investigation is conducted into the case with a view to prosecuting the suspects without any delay.”

NDLEA Arrest Hairstylist

A 20-year-old hair stylist, Josephine Odunu and a dispatch rider, Edesemi Ikporo, 30, have been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, for selling and distributing illicit drug-laced chin-chin to school students and at social parties in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state.

NDLEA officers on patrol around Opolo area of Yenagoa had on Sunday 10th March 2024 intercepted the motorcycle dispatch rider, Edesemi and recovered 200grams of chin-chin produced with cannabis sativa, which he was on a mission to deliver to a buyer. A swift follow up operation led to the arrest of the hairdresser, Josephine, who distributes the drugged chin-chin from the salon where she works in Kpansia area of Yenagoa. A search of the salon also led to the recovery of 3.00kilograms bringing the total weight of the illicit substance seized from the duo to 3.2kg.

Investigations reveal that they distribute the chin-chin often laced with cannabis and tramadol to students and at birthday parties. While Edesemi handles the delivery to buyers, Josephine is a major distributor to a wanted suspect who produces the drugged chin-chin.

In the same vein, NDLEA operatives in Adamawa state on Wednesday 13th March arrested two wanted suspects: Ajim Samuel (aka Boss), 30, and Davidson John Joshua (aka Dantala), 36, while on their way from Onitsha, Anambra state where they had gone to buy a consignment of tramadol containing 14, 428 pills of the opioid which they tucked in the body compartments of their black Honda Civic car marked YLA 623 SL. They were nabbed   along Numan-Jalingo road. Also recovered from them were 21grams of cannabis and monetary exhibits totaling N19, 280.

In Osun state, commercial bus driver, Ogunleye Adegoke, 49, was arrested along Gbongan-Ibadan road after NDLEA operatives discovered 2,000 capsules of tramadol, 60 tablets of rohypnol and 10 bottles of codeine syrup concealed in the spare tyre compartment of his vehicle. While a total of 343,000 pills of opioids were seized by NDLEA officers from a suspect, Lawan Abubakar, 33, in Azare town, Katagum, Bauchi state on Friday 15th March, same day the Nigerian Army transferred a suspect, Muhammadu Rabi’u, 37, with 64,000 pills of tramadol recovered from him to the Bauchi state command of NDLEA.

They were arrested on Monday 11th March at Gadar Tamburawa area, and Friday 15th March at Tsamiya Babba, Hotoro respectively.

While 118 kilograms of cannabis were recovered from a warehouse in Masaka area of Nasarawa state on Saturday 16th March, NDLEA operatives in Edo state on Thursday 14th March arrested a suspect, Kole Samuel, 50, with 75kg of same psychoactive substance at market area, Otuo, Owan East LGA. Same day, operatives raided the Oloma-Okpe forest in Akoko Edo LGA where they destroyed 3,944.2075 kilograms of cannabis on 1.577683 hectares of farmland.

With the same vigour, the various commands of the Agency across the country

continued the War Against Drug Abuse, WADA, advocacy campaign in the past week. Some of them include: WADA sensitisation lecture for students and teachers of Government Day Secondary School, Michika, Adamawa; students and staff of Nana Aisha Secondary School, Damaturu, Yobe; students of Dee Unique International School, Abesan, Ipaja, Lagos and students and staff of Purple Crown Secondary School, Uwani, Enugu as well as a WADA advocacy visit to the paramount ruler of Alesa -Eleme kingdom, Emperor JD Nkpe 11, Rivers state.

While commending the officers and men of the Bayelsa, Adamawa, Osun, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Edo, Kano, and Ogun Commands of the Agency for their outstanding feats in the past week, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) equally applauded their counterparts in all the commands across the country for intensifying their WADA advocacy lectures thus creating a fair balance between their drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction efforts.

The Famished Road to Kuriga

0
Azu Ishiekwene

By Azu Ishiekwene

The journey to Kuriga in southern Kaduna, North-west Nigeria, did not start with the kidnap of 287 students last week. In the early 1990s a neighbouring town, ZangoKataf, was the boiling point.

About a decade later, the beast of sectarian violence, which had reared its head in Kaduna, surfaced several hundreds of miles away in two major places that have become the epicentres of insurgency: Borno and Yobe States, both in the North-east.

Even though misery travelled southwards aided by Mohammed Yusuf, the itinerant extremist Muslim preacher in Yobe whose activities heightened the rise of extremism in the early 2000s, Yusuf did not entirely pave the way for the mass kidnap in Kuriga last week.

The incompetence of the security services mixed with rampant poverty in parts of the North and the opportunism of the elite in the region helped in no small way to recruit the bands of misguided and rogue elements that have become a national plague.

That band, mixed with insurgents drifting southward from the Sahel, has been showing up as banditry in some areas, cattle rustling in other areas, and violent extremism elsewhere. In the process, hundreds have been killed, while Borno and Yobe have become Africa’s largest camps of internally displaced persons.

Kidnapping is the latest franchise. It shocked the world when over 200 girls were kidnapped from their school in Chibok and 58 boys killed inside their school dormitory in Buni Yadi, Yobe State. But since then, Amnesty International has documented 13 abductions in Nigerian schools.

Within 10 days last week, over 500 persons, mostly children, were taken hostage in different states and in separate attacks on IDP camps and schools.

Days after 200 persons were kidnapped from an IDP camp in Borno State, a school in Kaduna State was the next hunting ground. Two-hundred and eighty-seven students and pupils, with some staff, from the Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) Primary School, Kuriga in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State were kidnapped during the school’s morning assembly.

Politicians, who shed crocodile tears for a living, visit crime scenes like Kuriga twice in their lifetime. They visit unfailingly during election campaigns and then grudgingly – more for the camera – at a time of grief, like this. Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, for example, was in Kuriga on Thursday, shortly after the students were kidnapped.

It was not a normal visit, like you would visit folks in your neigbourhood who had just suffered a loss. Kuriga or BirninGwari, another dangerous neighbouring town, has not been a normal place for years. Four years ago, for example, an NGO, WANEP, reported that 140 persons were abducted and 84 killed by bandits in BirninGwari.

Governor Sani’s visit

Eyewitnesses said on his visit to Kuriga, Governor Sani was prepared as if he was going to a warfront. Only one print journalist and a few others from broadcast stations, chosen by the Government House, were embedded in the governor’s convoy on that trip. Which means with telecommunications cut off, reports from there are second- third- or perhaps, fourth-hand accounts.

Residents of Chikun Local Government, with an estimated population of 550,000, have tried to get used to living under terror. Left largely on their own without government or security, they have accepted the authority of bandits and terrorists. These criminal gangs extort money from residents from N70,000 to N100,000 to have access to their farms. Those in Kidandan, GaladimawaKerawa, Sabon Layi, Sabon Birni and Ruma whose names may not show on your Google map, are also affected.

Yet, these folks might even consider themselves lucky, if luck means paying through your nose to reach your farm. According to news reports, those in other local governments such as Igabi and Giwa, have abandoned their farms to terrorists. Other communities in Kaduna currently under siege are Kaura, Kajuru, and ZangoKataf.

Toll gates of Kuriga

Apart from tolling the farms for cash, illegal miners, using small fry, have also deployed their billing machines. They squeeze farm owners to give up their lands for peanuts, which they then mine for minerals. It’s a criminal enterprise that has been on for years. Like most criminal gangs, the ones in Kuriga have developed their own codes, fees, levies and commissions.

The decision of these syndicates to turn from extorting farmers and stripping their lands of mineral deposits to kidnapping students for ransom is an indication that kidnapping is paying more. That’s not a surprise. The Africa Report quoted SBM Intelligence that gunmen kidnapped at least 3,620 people across Nigeria between July 2022 and June 2023, with a ransom demand totalling over N5billion.

What is the government doing about it? And I’m not talking about the state alone; I’m also talking about politicians in Kaduna and Abuja elected to represent these communities. Where, for example, is Jesse David, who represents this distressed community in the State House of Assembly?

And where is Shehu Balarabe, who represents BirninGwari/Gwari Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives? How did they find their way to their constituency during the election campaign but have lost their way back when their people need them most?

Where is the Federal Government, which controls the army, the air force, the police and the state services? How are kidnappers or bandits or terrorists able to mobilise and seize 287 students and teachers from their school in daylight in Kuriga, about 20 minutes’ drive from Birnin Gwari that is supposed to have a military base?

Imagine, for a moment, the logistics involved in moving 287 persons, most of them children. From infographics published by LEADERSHIP the day after, it would take 144 motorcycles or 57 cars or 21 buses or five 4.8 Embraer-145 planes, to move that number of people.

Yet, for the umpteenth time since 2014, children were kidnapped in their numbers by bandits who still managed to plan, coordinate and execute this evil in an area supposedly cut-off from communications. How, for Christ’s sake, did that happen?

A trillion-naira industry?

Just as shocking for me has been the near total absence of outrage outside Kuriga. It’s this kind of eye-rolling, not-our-business kind of attitude that has brought us where we are: where what shocked the world 10 years ago in Chibok even spawning demonstrations and hashtags, appears incapable of moving the dial today, in spite of its scale and audacity.

Apart the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Central African Republic (CAR), and South Sudan, where the savagery of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), led to 100,000 deaths, and the abductions of 60,000 to 100,000 children and the displacement of millions, only few countries have witnessed the scale of criminality that Nigeria has witnessed in what is supposed to be peace time.

It reminds me of Mexico in 2014. That year, also the year of the Chibok Girls, 43 students were kidnapped by a drug cartel and years of agonising search yielded no clues. Until last year, when long after the students had been murdered, investigations revealed that government officials were employees of the cartel.

According to the New York Times, text messages exchanged between the cartel and government officials even found that first responders on the crime scene were on the cartel’s payroll! Which partly explains why it took so long to unravel the crime.

It’s heart-wrenching to think that even though we’re told that Kuriga and other affected parts have been cut off from communications, we still hear of the criminals asking for ransom and issuing threats!

It may be far-fetched to assume official complicity in Kuriga. It’s foolish, however, to think that kidnapping became a trillion-naira industry without support from outside the gangs. Until we thoroughly investigate the kidnappers’ support system and expose and punish the kingpins, we’re wasting time.

Who knows where this is going to happen next?

Group Berates Zamfara And Katsina Governors  For Shunning Meetings With  Security Chiefs, As APC Seeks Divine Intervention

0
Governor Dauda Lawal and Dikko Umar Radda

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Zamfara State All Progressive Congress, APC, has urged all Muslim Ummah to use the  ongoing Ramadan Fasting period to seek the face of God and His intervention in the security challenges being faced by the state.

This is even as the Zamfara Safeguard Coalition SZC has lampooned the State Governor, Dauda Lawal, and his Katsina State Counterpart, Dikko Umar Radda, for shunning a Security Council Meeting called by major stakeholders to deliberate on the most effective ways to get the states out of the wood.

The Zamfara State APC Chairman, Tukur Umar Danfulani, in a statement on Sunday, March 17 2024, by the party’s Spokesperson Yusuf Idris Gusau, called on the people to  seize the opportunity offered by the holy month to also commit and strengthen their faith in God through engagement in  fervent prayers and reading of the Holy Quran, while adhering strictly to the teachings and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad .

” During this Ramadan ,let us offer Special prayers for Allah’s intervention in alleviating the prevailing hardships ,as Ramadan is a month of Allah’s blessing.” the statement noted.

The President General of ZSC ,in a statement on Saturday March 16  expressed deep shock and disappointment over the absence of the Governors whose states are seen as the epicenter of banditry, kidnappings  and other criminal activities in the North ,from a meeting initiated by the Chairman of Northern Governors Forum and Security Chiefs .

According to Tukur, the Security Parley was organized to find pragmatic solutions to the spate of insecurity currently ravaging Zamfara,Katsina and most. other states of the Northern region.

“The SZC which is dedicated to promoting peace and security in Zamfara and the surrounding states ,hereby condemn the actions of Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara state and Governor Umar Radda of Katsina for failing to participate in the discussion that could have potentially yielded solutions to the dire security situations at hand.

“These two Governors whose States have borne the brunt of the violence and blood shed ,had a responsibility to engage in dialogue and cooperation in order to safeguard the lives and property of the citizens .

“The SZC notes that the Governors’ stubborn reliance on civilian forces – Yan Sa Kai to combat the security challenges has only exacerbated the crisis .

“The unregulated and often indiscriminate operations of the Yan Sa Kai operatives have led to further violence and chaos ,contributing to the deterioration of the security environment  in the North West region “the SZC stated.

“The SZC ,while warning against the politicization of the on going security challenges in the North by political actors, maintained that the security and well being of the people should take precedence over all other considerations .

“The failure of Governor Lawal and Governor Radda to engage in the dialogue with the security Chiefs reflects a troubling lack of commitment and leadership on their part.

“It is disheartening to see the Governors of the worst hit states turning a blind eye to opportunities for meaningful deliberations and cooperation ,especially when the lives and property of their citizens are at stake .

“The SZC condemnation of the irresponsible actions of the Zamfara and Katsina Governors underscores the urgent need for strong and principled leadership in addressing the security challenges facing  Northern Nigeria”

“Disregard Presidential Order To Cede Land To Herders, Directive Reckless And Insensitive” – Middle Belt  Patriots To Governors

0
Bola Ahmed Tinubu

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Middle Belt Patriots, has issued a stern warning to Governors of North Central States of Nigeria not to give out any of the Region’s land for pastoral activities.

The Group’s warning is coming on the heels of a recent call  by President Tinubu on  Governors to consider the allotment of grazing land to herders in their States as a veritable means of resolving the festering Farmers/ Herders conflicts in some parts of the country.

In s statement issued by the Director of Media and Strategic Communication, Steven Kefas, on Saturday March 16, the Middle Belt Patriot expressed disappointment over what it described as “Federal Government’s constant  pandering to the interests of the pastoralists at the detriment and displacement of the indigenous population whose lands and lives are being overrun by the armed ethnic militias affiliated to the herders ”

According to the Group, the Governors yielding to the  demand to allot lands for grazing purposes will only exacerbate the situation, insisting that the Governors should not cede any land to herders.

“We of the Middle Belt Patriots vehemently condemn and reject the recent directive from the Federal Government asking State Governors to make land available for grazing by the Fulani  herdsmen.

“This provocative and ill-advised order shows a shocking disregard for the already tenuous security situation in the middle Belt Region that has been under sustained violent attacks by armed Fulani ethnic militias.

“We sternly warn the political leaders ,monarchs and Youth/ Community leaders of the Middle Belt Region – Benue, Plateau ,Nasarawa, Niger, Kwara, Kogi ,and sections of Adamawa ,Bauchi, Southern Kaduna, and Gombe, to outrightly disregard and defy this reckless federal Government.

“Capitulating to these demands and ceding more land for to herders will only fan the flames of ethnic clashes ,further the genocidal massacres escalate  the violent displacement of indigenes from their ancestral lands and jeopardize the fragile peace in a region that has already suffered immensely”

Murdered Soldiers: Clark Condemns ‘Dastardly Act’; Nigerians Call For Restraint As Soldiers Sack Communities

0

The Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, has condemned the brutal murder of some soldiers in Delta state last week.

The leader of the Forum, Edwin Clark made its position known in a statement on Sunday.

According to the elder statesman, the culprits must not be spared for their crime.

The magazine reported that 16 soldiers including their commander, two majors and other were killed by some suspected youths while on a peace mission to Okuama Community, Ughelli South Local Government Area of the state.

The killing has elicited trenchant criticism from not a few Nigerians who are calling on the security forces to ensure that those involved are fished out and punished.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday ordered the military to go after the murderers, and bring them to justice.

Clark in the statement yesterday described the killing as a “dastardly act” which is “totally unacceptable.”

Clark in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, March 17, expressed his pain and displeasure over the dastardly act.

He said, “There must be no sacred cows,  the culprits must be brought to book as early as possible.

“PANDEF mourns the slain military personnel and commiserates with all the families and the entire Nigerian Army.

“PANDEF further urges the Nigerian Army and other security personnel around the country to continue with their great national service and not to be deterred by this present sad development.”

Meanwhile, well-meaning Nigerians have appealed to the military to apply restraint in their quest to arrest the fleeing killers, following report on Sunday that soldiers have clamped on the communities where the crime was committed to avenge the death of the slain servicemen.

Reports said some houses in the communities were razed down yesterday by some suspected soldiers who, allegedly killed some persons, including children and women.
