Abba Kabir Yusuf - Governor of Kano State

In an apparent bid to stem a possible spill over of the unrest by irate Niger State youths over the escalating hard economic situation in the country to Kano, Governor Abba Yusuf Kabir has appealed to the State’s business community to show compassion and empathy to the plight of the masses in the conduct of their businesses.

The Governor who made the appeal during a meeting with some stakeholders within the business community expressed deep concern over the rising cost of living and its effects on the common people and its likely consequences, lamenting that many are finding it difficult to  fend for themselves.

He decried the escalating  inflationary trend in the country which in all, has negativity affected the living conditions of the ordinary man in the street.

Governor Yusuf blamed the high costs of prices of essential goods ,on  monoplistic and exploitative tendencies , noting that the trend can be mitigated if the business community upholds moral and ethical values in the conduct of their businesses.

Notwithstanding the fall of the country’s currency against major currencies of the world, the Governor  believes that corrective measures can significantly alleviate the situation.

In a release issued by his spokesperson Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Monday February 5 , Governor Yusuf ,said it is a compelling responsibility of the state to ensure that the people feel a sense of belonging ,while highlighting his commitment to appreciating the challenges that are being faced by the masses.

According to him, a comprehensive market survey of prices of basic commodities recently conducted ,have revealed a  very distressing inflationary trend ,adding that his administration is determined to address the issue through collaborative efforts.

In this regard ,the Governor said a high powered  Business Community Consultative Forum will be set up with a view to combating monopolistic and exploitative tendencies ,as well as create a conducive business environment.

He is also mulling an implementationof a price regulatory mechanism to stabiize inflationary trends ,aiming to provide relief to the people.

On their part, leaders of the kano business Community, blamed the harsh economic situation on the high inflationary trends in the country occasioned by high exchange rates, increase in cost of productions,  unstable power supply and closure of some Nigerian border posts .

They, therefore, appealed for  urgent interventions from the federal government to stabilize the exchange rates.

The biting economic situation in the country which  on Monday February 5, forced Niger State youths to take to the streets, is being perceived by Northern states as a huge threat to the already fragile security situation in the Region.

APC Accuses Opposition Of Fanning Embers Of Hatred, Anti Tinubu Protest

By Akinwale Kasali

Following the protest by youths in Niger State over the killing economic situation, the All Progressives Congress, APC, has accused opposition parties of sponsoring the anti-Tinubu protest.

The APC alleged that the opposition are instigating mass protest across the country against the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration to create a bad impression of the Government, and soil his name in the mud.

In a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, the APC said “in their arrant desperation to portray the APC-led administration as underperforming, opposition parties have resorted to instigating unsuspecting young people to protest in the streets of some major cities.”

It said the protests in Minna and Kano on Monday were the manifestation of this devious and unpatriotic plot.

“That the protests happened simultaneously in both cities is not coincidental. It bears the bold stamp of an orchestrated and coordinated effort to instigate unrest and undermine the government. This mercenary opposition tactic is a clear and present threat to public peace and national security.

“While we recognise the right of citizens to engage in peaceful protest, we urge our good people to be vigilant and not lend themselves to the treacherous attempt by the opposition to promote social strife through its incendiary rhetoric and manipulative plots.

“The President Bola Tinubu-led administration is solidly committed to doing everything in its power to mitigate the transient pains of critically important reforms that are crucial to economic recovery and sustainable prosperity for all Nigerians.

“It behoves us as good citizens of our beloved country to stand fast with our government in this noble stride. In due time, these policy reforms will yield an enduring beneficial transformation of the material conditions of life in the country.

“We implore Nigerians to shun the guile and unpatriotic attempt by opposition elements to destabilise the country for their own base and parochial political gains,” said party spokesman Felix Morka.

Ekiti Attorney General Queries NSCDC Over Bail Of Rap€ Suspect, Orders Re- Arrest

By Ayodele Oni

Ekiti State Government and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC) are at loggerhead over the release of a rap€ suspect in custody of NSCDC.

Attorney General and commissioner for justice, Dayo Apata SAN  wrote to the NSCDC Ekiti State chapter to query the release of a rap€ suspect on administrative bail, rather than prosecution.

The command has earlier been accused of trying to cover up the case involving a 59 years old Oyedele Emmanuel, who allegedly rap€d a 14 year old girl, by granting the suspect bail.

The command in its response, denied the allegation that it was planning to cover up the case, rather it hinged its action on delay in the  medical report of the survivor.

In the letter addressed to the  Commandant of the corps with the title “ARREST AND RELEASE ON ADMINISTRATIVE BAIL OF A RAP€ SUSPECT” the Attorney General frowned that the security outfit on its own volition, granted a rap€ suspect administrative bail on flimsy excuses of non-availability of medical report and purported sickness of the suspect which he said was unacceptable.

The letter reads:”You are well aware of the position of law and the zero tolerance of the present administration towards gender based violence especially against women and children.

“It behoves on you upon the arrest of the suspect to have timeously forwarded the case file to the police for discrete investigation.

“It is to be noted that, it was when this matter went viral on social media that you hurriedly packaged the case file and sent same to the Ministry of Justice on the 1 February, 2024 at around 3pm a clear 15 days after the arrest of the suspect.

“By all standards, a case of rap€ is a serious crime which leaves an everlasting psychological trauma in the memory of the Survivor and therefore should not be attended to with kid gloves.

“While I appreciate your efforts in administration of Criminal Justice System in Ekiti State, I wish to inform you that pending the resolution of your operational challenges, your office should as a matter of urgency endeavor to transfer any arrested suspect with the case file to the Police forthwith.

“Against the above backdrop, the suspect earlier granted administrative bail, should be re-arrested and handed over to the Police without further delay.”

Not True, Nigeria Is Not Finished – Reno Omokri

0

Nigeria is not finished because there was a power outage at Murtala Muhammed International Airport for three minutes. It is your anti-Nigerian bias that makes you think so.

Please fact-check me. There was a power outage at Heathrow Airport on Thursday, January 5, 2023. The blackout lasted far longer than it did at MMIA.

Remember, Heathrow is the busiest airport in Europe. Yet, British citizens were not all over social media de-marketing their country and telling anyone who cares to listen that The UK is finished.

Mind you, that was not the first time there was an outage at Heathrow. The attached photo is from another power cut on Monday, March 27, 2017. Again, please fact-check me.

Two months ago, on Thursday, December 7, 2023, there was a power outage on the London Underground that lasted hours. Passengers were trapped in trains under London. They could not get out. Yet, Londoners did not tear down their city with vicious hate filled words on X and Facebook.

Two weeks ago, Nigeria’s Stock Exchange overtook Argentina’s as the world’s most profitable. How come these sets of influencers and media did not carry it? A foreign media carried the story. It got almost no traction in Nigeria. Because it was not bad news!

Electricity supply is a human creation, and as such, it can suffer hiccups. When it happens in sensitive national infrastructure, like airports, it is regrettable.

However, it should be outsiders that use it against us, not we using it against ourselves. You can hate Nigerian leaders. You can hate Tinubu. But when you hate Nigeria because you hate Tinubu, you are like a man who hates himself because he hates his parents.

Discos Get 2700mw From TCN As Power Cuts Continue

Amidst effort to restore electricity across the country, the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has disclosed that it transmitted close to 2,700mw to the 11 electricity distribution companies, discos on Sunday.

The clarification comes following the collapse of the national grid two days ago, throwing many households and businesses which rely on electricity into serious hardship.

The magazine reported that the grid collapsed for the first time on Sunday with power generation going down to less than 60mw.

The TCN blamed low supply of gas for the problem, but said yesterday that the “partial system disruption’ has been resolved.

Explaining what has been done to restore power, TCN said It transmitted 2,651MW to the 11 DisCos at 4:38pm on Monday, adding that the national grid is now up and running.

Ndidi Mbah, the spokesman for TCN had issued a statement on Sunday

explaining what led to the collapse of the grid and the effort being carried out to fully restore it back to work.

Part of the statement read: “The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN hereby states that the grid experienced a partial disturbance at about 11:21Hours today with Ibom power islanded, feeding Eket, Ekim, Itu & Uyo transmission substations, during the period of partial disturbance. TCN initiated immediate restoration of the affected part of the grid, and presently, the grid is fully restored.

“Prior to the incident, total generation on the grid was 3,901.25 MW at 08:00Hours, a little over three hours before time of partial collapse. It is important to note that low power generation has persisted since January 2024, to date, exacerbating daily due to the lingering gas constraint.

“According to the National Control Center (NCC), the Internet of Things (IoT) revealed that just before the partial disturbance, which occurred at 11:21Hrs today, Sapele Steam & Egbin Substations lost a total of 29.32MW & 343.84MW at 11:20:14Hrs & 11:20:17Hrs respectively, totalling 373.16MW. “This, combined with the current low power generation due to gas constraints, caused the imbalance leading to the partial system disturbance.”

FG Working To Cut Food Prices, Edun Says After Niger Protest

0

The federal government is working out a system to cut down the rising price of food prices in the country, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun has said.

The minister made this known during a meeting with a German Delegation to the country led by the Minister of Cooperation, Svenja Schulze in Abuja on Monday.

Edun made the remark amidst concern among Nigerians that much is not being done by the government to stop inflation, particularly as it affects basic household commodities.

The magazine reported a protest that took place in Minna, Niger state on Monday, where angry youths, in their reaction to the skyrocketing food prices in the country, blocked major streets in the state.

Also recently, some angry women stormed the streets in Kaduna state to protest the high cost of flour in the country.

Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president recently called on the government to address the difficult economic problems in the country, saying Nigerians have lost confidence in the administration.

He was immediately rebuffed.

Analysts insist that inflation has risen to as high as 30 percent in the last few months, quoting figures from the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS.

Speaking yesterday during the meeting with the Germans, Edun said the federal government has rolled out various intervention to crash the cost of food.

The interventions, according to him include the provision of grains and fertilizers to farmers in other to increase farm produce.

The minister who spoke to journalists after the meeting, said President Bola Ahmed has approved other intervention in  the agricultural sector with the aim to address the problem of inflation.

He said the rising cost of food is “a concern to the government and everybody in Nigeria. Some of the major steps which i can point out that have been taken to address these issues. Because the issue of demand and supply, and a lot of emphasis have been placed on increasing agriculture production particularly.”

“The president has intervened in that area to provide grains, to provide fertilizers to farmers, to bring additional increase in rice, maize, wheat and cassava under additional acreage, additional production in order to bring out output, and thereby bring down prices, and that will help bring down inflation. And of course, we are in the middle of dry season farming, we are looking forward to a good season harvest that will help ameliorate food prices in particular, and the price level in Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, warned yesterday that its members will be force to protest if nothing concrete was done by the government to address the cost of food in the country.
