Uzodimma: Tasks New Bishop of Orlu On Evangelism

0
Hope Uzodimma and Auxiliary Bishop of Orlu Catholic Diocese.

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has said that the Catholic Church still leads the way in the moral rearmament of the society for the good of all despite the rising moral decadence in our society that even threatens the work of God.

He spoke on Wednesday at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Orlu on the occasion of the ordination of Monsignor Thomas Ifeanyichukwu Obiatuegwu as the Auxiliary Bishop of Orlu Catholic Diocese.

Governor Uzodimma who congratulated the Auxiliary Bishop on his new status in God’s vineyard, however challenged him and all the Bishops to rise to the challenge of evangelism in the Diocese given the phenomenal growth of Catholic faithful in the area.

The Governor said at the rate Catholic faithful are growing in Orlu Diocese from a recent 8,000 to about 1.2 million now, there is no doubt the Diocese needs to double her evangelical zeal to include the planting of more parishes.

Though Governor Uzodimma commended the leadership of the Catholic Church for leading the way in taming the ills in our society, he regretted, however,  that “as the Church grows so also criminality grows.”

He noted that although the Catholic Bishops deploy maturity in their utterances when they speak truth to power, the Governor maintained that the Church may not have done enough to impact enduring moral lessons on the faithful or in the alternative, “this generation suffers from hardness of the heart.”

He promised that his government will continue to partner with the Church as the most influential agent of socialisation and to alleviate the sufferings of the people, especially in this period of journey of economic recovery.

Governor Uzodimma had earlier expressed gladness to be part of the ordination, saying “it is a privilege to have witnessed the ordination of three different Bishops in Orlu Diocese – the late Bishop Gregory Ochiagha, Bishop Augustine Ukwuoma and today, the Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Obiatuegwu.”

He congratulated the new Bishop and reminded him that his elevation comes with additional responsibilities.

In his speech, the President of Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, His Grace, Most Rev. Dr. Lucius Ugorji who is also the Metropolitan Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, welcomed the new Bishop to the fold of Catholic Bishops and expressed confidence that he will be faithful to the body in general and the Bishop of Orlu in particular.

He thanked the Pope for the appointment of Msgr. Obiatuegwu and commended Bishop Augustine Ukwuoma for sustaining the growth and development instituted by the pioneer Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Orlu, late Bishop Gregory Ochiagha.

The Archbishop thanked the Irish Missionaries who brought Christianity to Nigeria for their sacrifices and urged Orlu Diocese faithful to always anchor their faith on God and hold firm to the work of God and shun all fake gods.

Archbishop Ugorji thanked Governor  Uzodimma for beefing up security in the State which made it possible for people to come from all walks of life to attend the ceremony.

Regardless, he strongly bemoaned the sit-at-home order in the South East, emphasising that it has grossly paralysed businesses and the economy of the zone.

As a way out of the situation, he requested the Federal Government to seriously address the issue of mandatory sit-at-home order by non-state actors, fueled by what he called the continued incarceration of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Archbishop Ugorji therefore appealed to President Bola Tinubu to use his good offices to salvage the situation. “Releasing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will open the economic path way of the South East,” he enthused.

Earlier during his Homily, the Catholic Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, Most Rev. Prof. Godfrey Onah said it is an irony that Orlu faithful who are predominantly Christians and Catholics should be associated with killings and all manners of inhuman behaviour leading to people fleeing the area when there is no established war going on in Nigeria.

He challenged them to be part of the solution to the perceived insecurity and moral reengineering that will restore Orlu to its past glory of a peaceful place.

Bishop Onah invited the Auxiliary Bishop to brace up to the responsibility of leading the faithful to God.

In his appreciation to those who honoured his ordination, Bishop Obiatuegwu expressed gratitude to all and thanked Pope Francis in particular for approving his nomination.

He promised to apply himself creditably to the work of God and solicited the support of all – Bishops, the Clergy and Laity, everyone through prayers, insisting that as a beginner he is “always ready to learn.”

Bishop Obiatuegwu lauded the Bishop Ukwuoma whom he described as “a Bishop after God’s heart and a gift of God to Man.”

To the Governor of Imo State, Bishop Obiatuegwu expressed his gratitude to  Governor Uzodimma for what he called “the fabulous support of the Governor to the success of the ordination.”

Also, he singled out former boss of Seplat Oil and Gas, Dr. ABC Orjiakor for gratitude describing him as a “brother from another mother.”

“Here I am, willing and ready to serve,” he told his audience.

In his message,  the Principal Consecrator, Bishop Ukwuoma thanked all who came to honour the invitation, especially Pope Francis whom he said approved his request for a Bishop “to assist him to manage the Diocese that is growing and expanding every day.”

In the same vein, Bishop Ukwuoma thanked  Governor Uzodimma for his “continued support and prompt response anyday, anytime the Diocese approaches him for assistance.”

The ordination was attended by 40 Bishops, other representatives of Bishops in Nigeria and beyond, politicians, traditional rulers among others.

Group Alleges Plot To Break Bond Between President Tinubu And Yahaya Bello

By Akinwale Kasali

A Group under the auspices of Kogi Peoples Movement for Equity and Justice has alleged a plot by mischief makers to cause chaos and break the bond between President Bola Tinubu and immediate Past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.

The Group said it is warning political detractors who are not resting on their oars to create a wedge between President Tinubu and his godson, Bello.

A statement by the Group through its Coordinator, Sani Usman, condemned the “unwarranted and provocative social media rants and devious commentary by some misguided political enemies” of Bello.

Usman said the comments were part of an attempt to create disaffection between the former Governor and his father and political leader, President Tinubu.

They noted that Bello holds the Nigerian leader in the highest esteem as his father and benefactor, “and this will continue to be the case between the father and the son no matter the evil machinations of fifth columnists and disgruntled elements who are bent on destroying the relationship.

“Ex-Governor Bello, whose towering political influence has angered many of his detractors has been consistent in mobilizing political will behind Mr. President particularly among emerging leaders in Northern Nigeria as the President deals with the current economic challenges with the frontal determination of a Commander-in-chief ingrained with the uncommon passion to lead from the front.

“What the children of hate have been doing since the general election that brought President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to power is to embark on desperate attempts to disparage the person and character of Alhaji Yahaya Bello and to cause needless disaffection between him and Mr. President.

“The vile comments by sponsored social media trolls and their conspirators in the media space suggesting the existence of a ‘discord’ between ex-Governor Bello and President Tinubu is not only grossly misleading but blatantly tragic particularly at this time that we must pull together as a nation to address matters of insecurity and economic downturns irrespective of political affiliations.

“For the umpteenth time, we advise the enemies of public good and national cohesion to desist from rehashing old, tired, failed and dead narrative which has since been buried with the emergence of President Tinubu both as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and as the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces.

“Ex-Governor Yahaya Bello should be left alone to enjoy life as a private citizen even as he remains an ardent supporter of President Bola Tinubu who is his father and eternal political leader. Those who are bent on creating misunderstanding should be advised to wake up from their ill-fated slumber.

“ They should avoid the temptation to wallow in the figment of their imagination of a discord between Mr. President and ex-Governor Bello as nothing will break the bond between them no matter what the enemies throw at the public in their desperate attempts to keep feeding their nefarious base with false narratives”, the Group warned.

Army Blames Kuje Prison Jail Breaks On Absence Of CCTV, Low Fence

By Akinwale Kasali

The Nigerian Army has blamed the continuous Jail Break in Kuje Prison, Abuja, on the absence of CCTV Cameras and low fences.

The Chief Of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who was represented by the Assistant Director Commercial Law, Directorate of Legal Services, Major Ogbuinya, made this revelation during the probe instituted by the House of Representatives Joint Committees on Reformatory Institutions, Justice, Police Affairs, Interior, and Human Rights in Abuja on Wednesday.

The Committee is investigating the jail break and the whereabouts of inmates who escaped from Kuje Corrections Centre.

According to Ogbuinya, the army “observed that the place where Kuje prison is located is more of a built-up area.

“We observed issues of low fencing and a lack of CCTV cameras within the area, but these were unable to be put in place before the incident.”

The representative of the Chief of Army Staff, Ogbuinya, said the Nigerian Army was only playing a complimentary role to the correctional centres to assist them.

He added that the army was not the only security agency deployed to Kuje prison.

According to him, “the day it took place, we had a rotation of troops, and it was that day the incident took place. I wouldn’t want to comment on the possibility of having an insider.

“Prior to that incident, the Nigerian army wrote a series of letters to the Comptroller General of the Correctional Service concerning our observations and things that would enhance security.

“We are still working to know if there are any soldiers who failed to do what they were meant to do within the military hierarchy”.

Representative of the Attorney General of the Federation, Ayoola Daniel, said the Ministry was in support of the Committee to decongest the prison.

She said the correctional service had been removed from the exclusive to concurrent list, adding that states were expected to take up responsibility for decongesting the prison.

Also speaking, Philip Ayuba, Assistant Commandant General, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, asked the committee to look into how lawyers who are in the National Youth Service Corps could be engaged in providing services for prisoners.

“We still have so many young men in prison; we are requesting that NYSC lawyers be sent to prison to look at some of the minor cases so that we can decongest the prison.

He called for the need to embrace alternative conflict resolution, adding that this would also help to decongest the prison.

“We also suggest that those who have stayed more than a year or two should be given amnesty. They need to give the inmate better training so that those who leave can find better things to do.”

Rep. Olumide Osoba, Chairman of the Committee on Justice, said, “We found ourselves in an embarrassing situation in July 2022.

He said it was condemnable to have such a large number of prisoners, adding that there had been a lot of improvement at the correctional centre since its oversight.

Rep. Chinedu Ogah, Chairman, Joint Committees, said the correctional service is key to Nigeria’s security.

He said that the committee would do what was right by ensuring decongestion while urging stakeholders to make effective contributions to do what was needed.

Deputy GC, Mr Mohammed Tukur, said all that was needed to decongest the prison was money.

15 Years Blackout: President Tinubu Set To Commission Ondo Southern Communities Electrification

By Ayodele Oni

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has updated residents of Southern part of Ondo State which has been cut off national grid for close to 15 years that repair work on the electrification is nearing completion.

Commissioner representing Ondo state on the NDDC board, Otito Atikase, in a statement on Wednesday stated that the NDDC has been hard at work in the past few months to restore electricity to the southern region of Ondo State that has perpetually remained in pitch darkness for over fifteen years now.

Atikase, in a statement by his media aide, Rotimi Oyeneyin, explained that “One significant milestone achieved is the completion and energization of the 132KV Transmission Line from Omotosho, coupled with the establishment of the 132KV/33KV Substation at Erinje, Okitipupa Local Government.

“These vital components of the project, undertaken and wholly funded by the Federal Government through the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) now stand as spotlights of progress, bringing steady electricity to the substation and its surrounding areas.

“However, the journey towards full electrification does not end here. Recognizing the interconnectedness of the distribution network, the NDDC has embarked on a rehabilitation of the inter-distribution network of the communities within reach.

“The awarding of the Erinje project, extending from Okitipupa to Igbokoda and down to Ugbonla, underscores the commitment to ensuring seamless electricity distribution to every neighbourhood.

“With this phase set to conclude in a matter of weeks, the vision of comprehensive electrification edges closer to fruition. Other things being equal, the project is expected to be inaugurated by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in April,2024.”

According to the commissioner, NDDC has taken proactive steps by formally notifying the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) of the handover of the substation.

“The tentative date for this significant event has been earmarked for the 26th of March, 2024, marking a historic moment in the project’s timeline.

“It is noteworthy that the Ondo State government has no role to play thus far in the project implementation, as the present focus remains on addressing the high-tension aspects of the electrification process.

“However, as the project progresses towards low-tension implementation, the state government’s role in providing meters and other ancillary needs to households will become increasingly vital.

“This thus presupposes that we haven’t at this material time reached the stage where the Ondo State government has a key role to play in the electrification project.”

Police Foil Planned Take Over Of LP Secretariat By Protesting Workers

NLC at Labour Party Secretariat

By Ayodele Oni

The false alleged ambition of the Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC), Joe Ajaero,  to become the National Chairman of the Labour Party, (LP) is tearing apart the party.

There was an attempt on Wednesday by Nigeria Labour Congress to picket the National Secretariat of LP in Abuja. This was, however, aborted by the Police who barricaded the entrance.

Some workers had  invaded the National Secretariat of the Labour Party in Abuja to protest the Party’s National Convention planned for March 27, 2024. The NLC is also insisting on the sacking of the National Chairman of the Party, Barrister Julius Abure.

The NLC leadership accused Abure of planning to hold a “secret” Convention without the inputs of major stakeholders. The NLC is one of the stakeholders.

The planned Convention has pitched Abure against the NLC and the House of Representatives caucus of the Party with the workers accusing Abure of planning to destroy the Labour Party.

The  political wing of the NLC had kicked against Abure and the NWC over the planned national convention in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, on March 27.

It said in a statement:

“That given the intransigence of the National Chairman of the Labour Party to unilaterally hold a National Convention of the Labour Party, financial rascality and contempt for the leadership of the NLC, the NLC State Councils and State Political Committees should mobilize workers to picket all the State Secretariats of the Labour Party, scheduled for Wednesday, 20th March 2024.”

The convention was said to be aimed at re-electing Abure as the sole administrator of the Labour Party, with concerns of secrecy surrounding the event.

The political wing of the NLC insisted that the planned convention was illegal and is demanding the immediate resignation of Abure as the party chairman.

It, also, called for the formation of a caretaker Transition Committee to organize a legitimate and all-inclusive National Convention for the party.

However, the LP leadership opposed the directive, alleging that it was driven by alleged Ajaero’s supposed desire to become the next National Chairman of the Party, an allegation Ajaero’s close allies dismiss as “absolute bunkum.”

Said one of them to The Source: “How is it possible that Ajaero would  want to walk away from the very high profile office of the NLC President to go and become the Chairman of the Labour Party? How can? It is not true. Ajaero has no such ambition, please.”

“I Have Neither Requested Nor Received Any Money From Govt – Former Gov Ikpeazu On Repeal Of Abia Pension Law

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Immediate past Governor of Abia State, Dr Victor Okezie Ikpeazu, has said that since  relinquishing power on May 29, 2023,he has neither requested for,  nor received from the Abia State Government, any  money, under any guise whatsoever.

The Former Governor’s assertion comes on the heels of the repeal, on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, of the Abia State Governor and Deputy Governor’s pension Laws  of 2021, by the Abia State House of Assembly.

The Bill which was sponsored by House Majority Leader, and Member Representing Arochukwu State Constituency, Hon Okoro  Uchenna Kalu, according to  the Speaker Rt Hon Emmanuel Emereuwa, when assented to, will ensure that the outrageous cost of governance is reduced and funds freed for the execution of developmental projects.

Emereuwa also stated that the Bill which will be cited afterwards as ” Abia state Governor and Deputy Governor ( Repeal) law 2024, will be deemed to have taken  effect from March, 29, 2024.

The Source reports that the now repealed Governor/ Deputy   Governor Pension Law 2021  had, among other things, provided for the payments of N12 million and N9 million monthly to former Governors and their Deputies respectively as pension benefits.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, March 20, by his  Media Adviser  Onyebuchi Ememanka, former Governor Ikpeazu  insisted that he has moved on with his life, and is currently engaged in other areas of interest to him.

He consequently called on the Abia State Government to face the business of governance and desist from engaging in needles media sensationalism.

“The attention of the immediate past Governor of Abia State, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, has been drawn to reports circulating online to the effect that the Abia State House of Assembly has repealed the 2021 Law under which former Governors and Deputy Governors are paid some money as pension.

“The said reports which are obviously sponsored, are mischievously couched to give the false impression that Dr Ikpeazu is amongst former Governors of the state currently receiving pension from the Abia state Government.

“Dr Ikpeazu wishes to make it abundantly clear that since after handing over the reins of power as Governor of Abia on May 29 2022, he has neither requested for, nor received any dime under any guise whatsoever and has no intentions of doing so”, the statement noted.

Fake Doctor attested in Ekiti

By Ayodele Oni

The mysterious death of a patient at the Ijesa-Isu general hospital, in Ekiti State has exposed the identity of the health personnel that handled her case to be fake.

The suspected fake doctor, Olalekan Timothy Fasipe, was employed about ten years ago by the Ekiti state health management board as a dentist but now a medical director at Ijesa Isu general hospital.

He was reported to have earlier been involved in a similar case at Ijero Ekiti general hospital where he was transferred to his present work place to cover the incident.

The Nigeria Medical Association, Ekiti State Branch has disowned the suspected fake doctor, who has now arrested on the allegation of Forgery of his full registration certificate with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, (MDCN).

Olalekan who is a staff of Ekiti State Hospital Management Board had been parading himself as a qualified Doctor without necessary certificate and qualifications.

In a statement by the NMA Chairman in Ekiti State, Dr. Babatunde Rosiji and the Secretary, Dr. Moses Dada said the association has been on a crusade to address medical quackery in partnership with the State Government through the Ministry of Health and Human Services.

According to the Ekiti NMA, “We are currently rattled with the arrest of Olalekan Timothy Fasipe, an employee of the Hospitals’ Management Board who also served as a member of Ekiti NMA State Officers’ Committee until his arrest.

“Ours is a noble profession with very high ethical standards as our calling places on us the demand to care for human lives; a calling which is tasking but also brings so much gratification to be privileged to have such a critical role.

“The training of medical doctors is rigorous and it culminates in the inclusion of a medical graduate’s name on the register of Medical Practitioners in Nigeria, whether foreign-trained or locally-trained.

“We have remained in close communication with the Hospitals’ Management Board and the State Ministry of Health and Human Services and we are doing everything possible to ensure that the case is thoroughly prosecuted.

“For the avoidance of doubt, anyone whose name is not on the register of Medical Practitioners in Nigeria who parades himself as a medical doctor is an impostor and a criminal”

“We are also using this opportunity to sound a note of warning to everyone whose name is not on the register of medical practitioners in Nigeria who may be parading himself or herself as a medical doctor in Ekiti State that the arms of the law will certainly catch up with you”

The leadership of Ekiti NMA expressed confidence in the ability of the Nigeria Police Force and Ekiti State Ministry of Justice to leave no stone unturned in getting to the root of the matter and expand their net to capture as many other impostors as may be within the State.

Ekiti NMA said since the case is under investigation, no further comment will be made in order not to jeopardize the ongoing investigation.

It assured the entire citizens of Ekiti State to remain calm as the relevant agencies of Government continue to work on the case and urged relevant agencies of government to ensure that all health practitioners in the State possess valid and up to date annual practicing licence.

The Association, therefore, urged hardworking members not to allow the current situation affect their psyche as effort is ongoing to continue providing uninterrupted clinical care to the teeming population of the State especially in the face of the increasing workload occasioned by the unabating japa trend.

In line with the THEMES +Agenda of the Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu administration, the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development in collaboration with Lagos State Resident Registration Agency, LASSRA, has concluded plans to register the youths in the State.

The essence of the registration, the state government said, is to promote capacity development, Social Inclusion and Gender Equality among the youths in the state

The Commissioner, Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende stated that the exercise was aimed at building a reliable database for youths in the State.

Ogunlende informed that the exercise meant for youths between the ages of 18-35 years would commence from Monday, 25th March to Friday, 29th March,2024 at Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja from 8am- 4pm daily after which applications will be done online.

She said,”the essence of the whole exercise is aimed at proper allocation of resources towards youth development. As a Ministry statutorily saddled with this responsibility,we would ensure that both the formal and informal youths are properly captured.By so doing we can work towards helping them to realise their dreams by initiating policies and programmes suitable for them.

Nigerians Suffering Despite Over N10trn Shared By FG, States, LGAs

0

THE three tiers of government – Federal, state and local governments – shared N10.143 trillion from the Federation Account as statutory revenue allocations in 2023.

Dr Ogbonnaya Orji made this known in a report by the Executive Secretary, Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN reports.

According to Orji the revelation was necessary to show transparency in how the nation’s resources are shared by the constitutionally recognized tiers of government.

The report said the federal government received the highest revenue of N3.99 trillion, representing 39.37 percent of the total allocation.

He added that the 36 states got N3.585 trillion representing 35.34 percent while the 774 local government councils shared N2.56 trillion, equivalent to 25.28 percent.

Orji said: “A further analysis of the N10.143 trillion disbursements in 2023 showed an increase of N1.934 trillion or 23.56 percent when compared to the disbursement of N8.209 trillion shared in 2022.

“The review attributed the increase to improved revenue remittances to the Federation Account due to the removal of petrol subsidy and the floating of the exchange rate by the new administration.

“The report highlighted that while total revenues distributed from the account recorded an increase of 23.56 percent in 2023, the increase accruing to each tier of government varied due to the type of the revenue streams contributing to the inflows into the Federation Account,” he said.

Meanwhile, not a few Nigerians insist that they are yet to see improvement in their lives despite the humongous revenue shared by the three levels of government.  To them, the higher funds shared by the governments only reflect in the ostentatious lifestyles of state officials.
