Yoruba Nation Activist, Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho) In Nigeria For Mother’s Burial

By Ayodele Oni

After almost three years sojourn abroad, Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Igboho, has finally returned to Nigeria.

Igboho has been away from Nigeria since 2021, when he eloped to the Benin Republic to escape arrest after the Department of State Services, (DSS), declared him wanted.

The secret police had invaded his home in the Soka area of Ibadan, Oyo State over alleged terrorism charges and attacks on Fulani herders allegedly responsible for the unrest in the Southwest.

While attempting to travel to Germany, Igboho was arrested in Benin Republic and remanded in prison. However, he recently regained his freedom after two years in a Beninese prison.

Confirming his return, Igboho’s spokesman, Olayomi Koiki, in a terse statement via X on Thursday, said the Yoruba Nation activist was in the country for his mother’s burial.

He wrote: “I can confirm that Chief Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho is currently on his way to Igboho Town for the final burial of his mother MRS S.A.Adeyemo.

“The body of MRS S.A Adeyemo was picked up from the mortuary in Saki some few hours ago.”

It would be recalled that Igboho, while in prison at Benin Republic, lost his mother, who lived in Saki, Oyo state.

LP Reps Demand Probe Of Abure’s Arrest, Dehumanisation

Julius Abure - Arrested

The Labour Party, LP, caucus in the House of Representatives, has queried the timing and intentions of the recent arrest of Julius Abure, National Chairman of the party, in Edo state, describing it as cruel, dehumanising and an abuse of democratic ethos.

The Labour Reps expressed their dismay over the controversial arrest, in a statement on Thursday, by the caucus Leader, Afam Victor Ogene, in Abuja.

According to Tijani Momoh, spokesperson of the police for Zone 5, Edo state, Abure was arrested over a petition to the Inspector General (IG) of Police, in a case of alleged “attempted murder, conspiracy to commit dangerous harm.”

Ogene said the timing of the arrest, on the eve of LP’s primary election for the forthcoming governorship election in Edo state, which the Barrister Abure-led National Working Committee, NWC, is overseeing, exposes the ugly development as a crudely scripted political charade that offends the sensibility of every true democrat and puts to question the integrity of the police in issues that involve the political class.

The LP caucus called on the IG to investigate the underlining issues that has put the police in bad light, by “Once again soiling the institution in the mud of desperate tussle for political powers, by those who see politics as a do or die affair.”

Speaking further,  Ogene said: “There is no excuse for the manner the police conducted the ill-timed and misleading arrest of LP national chairman. If there was any need for the Police to take Barrister Abure in, a simple invitation would have sufficed.

“The inexplicable dehumanisation and brutalisation of Chief Abure was uncalled for. Democracy ought to refine our security agents and bring out the best in them, rather than enhance their biases and prejudices in the society.

“It is absolutely unlikely that the National Chairman of either the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), would suffer similar ignoble treatment in the hands of the Nigerian police.

“In deed, what was the rationale for arresting a man of Abure’s standing in society in such a gestapo manner, drag him on the streets like a common felon, only to release him in the dead of the night?

“While we cannot prevent the nation’s security agencies from carrying out their constitutional assigned roles, we insist, as a Caucus, that civility, decorum and due process must be their watchword, always.

“Consequently, it is our demand that the perpetrators of this show of shame must be brought to book, if only to serve as a potent reminder to the Government of the day, that the days of the jackboots are long over,” the statement added.

OPINION: APC Digging Its Own Grave in Edo

Nigeria’s politicians have perfected the art of burying themselves with one foot sticking out. And it appears that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will, once again, stage this rite of self-destruction in the forthcoming governorship election in Edo State.

The party’s primaries on Saturday was such a shambles, it has now been forced to conduct it again, with no guarantee of a sensible outcome for an exercise involving perhaps less than 500,000members (parties routinely inflate their roll). If Governor Godwin Obaseki’s ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), had paid to put a spell on APC, the outcome would not have been more potentially devastating.

Yet, this is a governor whose bet to install a successor from his own party is not necessarily based on his own record, but on the gift of an opposition in disarray.

After the turbulent last four years at Osadebey House between Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, it looked all but certain that the divided house of PDP would collapse when elections hold again in September.

And this was not wishful thinking. Not only has the common political front that paved the way for Obaseki’s ascension to power in his first term eroded; in his second term, he has been fighting both internal and external political enemies, severely limiting his attention and performance.

If his first term was uneventful, it was precisely because that was when the seed of the state’s future political crisis was sown. Even though his benefactor, former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, had installed him in office in the hope of replicating the Tinubu-Fashola model in Lagos, Obaseki had other plans.

The new “tuke-tuke”

Once he was ensconced in office, he made a point of telling the remnant of the Oshiomhole crowd still hanging around the corridors of power, that power had changed hands. No longer, he reportedly said, were the days of “tuke-tuke” politics, a carryover from the era of Tony Anenih, which former Edo State Commissioner for Information and presidential aide, Louis Odion, once described in Louis-pediaas a political variant that empowered touts and prioritised rent for politicians for doing little or no work.

Obaseki, the blue-eyed Lagos Boy and financial consultant, advertised as the answer to Edo State’s private sector woes, should know.He was a core member of Oshiomhole’s cabinet, now determined to carve his own path.

When after taking power, however, he began to cut off the supply line to the trough, starving the APC’s political structure in the state of nutrition, the battle line with Oshiomhole was drawn. The former governor who had also become the Chairman of the APC at the time, used his position to block Obaseki from getting the party’s ticket for a second term.

Obaseki of course milked public sympathy and later decamped to the PDP where he contested and won re-election. As a result of his defection, he governed with a hostile, hobbled parliament. Fourteen – and later 10 – out of the 24 members of the State House of Assembly were in the opposition and they operated mostly from a hideout provided in Abuja by Oshiomhole.

Significantly damaged in legitimacy, there was very little Obaseki could do.He has spent a greater part of the last four years watching his back for a deputy who, were he in the opposition, could not have plunged more daggers in the government’s back.

Residents have borne the brunt. Not only has Obaseki replaced the old cult of “tuke-tuke” with the new cult of “yes-men,” reports from the state also indicate that there are few paved roads and other social infrastructure such as water, hospitals, and schools, especially in areas outside the capital, Benin City.

The more you look…

Not unlike a good number of the states, the doubling of the state’s internally generated revenue from N1.8billion monthly in 2016 has barely been felt in rural areas where homes are still without water and school buildings are still largely without roofs and students without teachers.

Although Edo is currently ranked above its peers in the South-South poverty league with 1.4m (out of the state’s 3.9m population)living in multidimensional poverty, a government determined to make its mark could have done far more to lift the people.

Obaseki has done well in cultivating an elite in smart suits, while keeping up a façade of performance, especially with high-profile media events like Edo Best, Alaghodaro Summit, and the renovation of the Secretariat. But as surely as the ball of pounded yam never fails to press into the straying fish crumb in the soup, these projects have been criticised, particularly by the opposition, as the government’s conduit pipes.

Edo could not have been riper for the taking than in its present state, but Oshiomhole’s ambition may well be the wrecking ball. In my forecast entitled, “What you might expect in 2024,” published last December 28, I said, “The biggest danger to APC’s victory is Oshiomhole…except the APC finds an overwhelmingly appealing candidate, the party could be in for a surprise.”

The result of the party’s “inconclusive” primaries on Saturday, showed that the surprise came early. From reports, Oshiomhole, APC’s certified nemesis in Edo, managed to suborn forces in the Presidency to hand over the party’s flag to Dennis Idahosa – a candidate that Oshiomhole’s government had once described as “untrustworthy,” the most flattering of the government’s description at that time.

But suspects have their moments of redemption. Except that in this case reports on the conduct of the primaries on Saturday showed that even the redeemer seemed so far gone in his waywardness, he suborned not only Abuja, but also one of the most notorious political conductors to supervise the primaries.

A crime scene

The result, of course, was parallel primaries. One with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officers present – as it should be – that produced Monday Okpebholo; and the other, which invariably produced Idahosa, became a crime scene.

The outcome was neither organised, even from the point of a common heist, which it was; nor was it politically strategic. Idahosa, the beneficiary of that crime scene, is from Edo South, where Obaseki, who is backing Asue Ighodalo, a candidate from Edo Central, could significantly undermine APC’s votes.A third candidate, Anamero Dekeri, even emerged from the woodwork, to claim victory!

It’s true that whether a political party holds its primaries in the motor park or at a brothel, it is not the business of non-party members. The point, unfortunately, is that we have seen that in the end, voters pay for the travesty, corruption and incompetence in the parties.

APC should have learnt that lesson in Zamfara four years ago when a court ruling invalidated the entire state election over shambolic party primaries, never mind a recent Supreme Court ruling that has further muddied the waters.

At elections, voters often have uninspiring choices – Tweedle-dee and Tweedledum – inflicted on them by party primaries that were anything but primaries. The crimes committed by politicians behind closed doors soon become public bastards, often leading to voter apathy, bitter wranglings or needless court disputes. It’s incredible that parties that can’t even manage their own affairs want a chance on the bigger stage.

PDP may laugh – and indeed it should, as it appears that the APC has already handed it the shovel to finish off the burial rites. But with Obaseki’s deputy, Shaibu, threatening to bring down the roof, it would be interesting to see how the PDP and the Labour Party, which is also having its own troubles, organise their own primaries.

If Nigeria’s elections – party, local council, state or federal – has taught anything, it is that as surely as a stumble precedes a fall, shambolic primaries lay the foundation for turbulent electoral outcomes and unstable governments.

Once again, Edo is proving that the story is not about to change.

Fmr Gov Fayemi Blames Oshiomole For Botched Edo APC Governorship Primary

0

By Ayodele Oni

As the blame trade continues on the botched governorship primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo state, former Governor of Ekiti state, Dr Kayode Fayemi has observed that the role of Adams Oshiomole, former governor of Edo state in the exercise was questionable.

Fayemi, the ex-Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF),  commended the  Abdullahi Ganduje-led National Working Committee, (NWC) of the APC for the decision to cancel and reschedule the controversial gubernatorial primaries in Edo State.

He noted that this decision has restored the confidence of members of the Edo State chapter of the Party in a fair, impartial, and transparent exercise and showed that the APC is interested in producing a popular candidate.

Adams Oshiomhole
Adams Oshiomhole

Fayemi, in a statement on Wednesday, signed by Mallam Ahmad Sajoh, Head, his Media Office, also applauded the President and Leader of the Party, Bola Tinubu for not interfering and allowing due process on the issue of the APC gubernatorial primaries in Edo State.

“I wish to thank the President for allowing the Party to function independently on this sensitive issue and thus assure our teeming members in Edo State that the process for the gubernatorial primaries will be free, fair, and transparent.”

Fayemi, however, condemned the questionable role of Senator Adams Oshiomhole, a former Governor of the State and National Chairman of the APC, in the truncation of the initial exercise.

He recalled that Oshiomhole had also played a disruptive role in the last gubernatorial election in Edo State, which ultimately made the APC lose the state to the opposition.

“Ideally, as a leader, he should have ensured a level playing field for all the aspirants but he was trying to impose a candidate in a manner that’s not free and fair.

‘’Earlier, Oshiomhole had attempted to eliminate some aspirants from contesting in the primaries and failed. This is reminiscent of his high-handedness as National Chairman when he manipulatively schemed Governor Godwin Obaseki out of the electoral process. That action led to the unfortunate loss of Edo State by the APC.

“It would appear the ground was being prepared by Oshiomole yet again for the APC to lose the coming election in Edo state because of his unconscionable behaviour. However, the party has demonstrated independence and impartiality in cancelling and reordering the primaries.

‘’We hope the fresh primaries will now take place in an atmosphere deemed free and fair by all, for the sake of our great party.

‘’Oshiomhole may decide to support any of the aspirants if he chooses not to be neutral, but the process must be open, free, and transparent, following the laid down rules. My interest is the APC and the party must put its best foot forward in the forthcoming elections.’’

2 Months After CBN Lifted Ban On Virtual Assets Transactions, FG Blocks Crypto Sites

The Federal Government has blocked crypto currency transactions in the country for allegedly aiding criminal activities.

The magazine however learnt that the ban on crypto platforms may not be unconnected with the ongoing efforts to save the Naira.

Top ministry and CBN officials are not happy that the crypto sites are being used to undermined the naira by speculating its value against the American dollar, sources said.

According to sources who spoke yesterday, the federal government has ordered the telecommunications companies in the country to block crypto transactions on their platforms.

In response, the magazine learned that top telecoms firms such as MTN, Glo, Airtel, 9 Mobile, amongst others have banned major crypto currency websites such as Binance and OctaFX on their platforms.

But major crypto website Binance said on Tuesday that that it’s working with the federal government to stabilise Nigeria’s foreign exchange market

“As industry leaders, we are working hand in hand with local authorities, lawmakers, and regulators to ensure we act on non-compliance,” Binance said in a statement.

The website had two days ago disabled sell option for its Nigerian users, blocking them from selling fiat currency, USDT, on the platform, aside from capping the buy option to $1802 for Nigerian users.

It also disabled purchase of cryptocurrencies via P2P for its Nigerian users, leaving those who might want to sell their crypto assets such as Bitcoin, BNB, Ethereum via P2P stuck.

“More serious measures will be demanded from these platforms in the future for any review to happen, if any at all,” a top source in the Presidency said on Thursday.

The development is coming less than three months after the Central bank of Nigeria, CBN, reviewed its stance on crypto assets in the country and asked banks to disregard its earlier ban on crypto transactions.

The CBN had in a circular dated December 22, 2023, with reference number FPR/DIR/PUB/CIR/002/003, and signed by the apex bank’s Director, directed commercial banks to allow their customers to trade in Virtual Assets

.

The circular read in part:  “The CBN, in February 2021  issued a circular restricting banks and other financial institutions from operating accounts for cryptocurrency service providers in view of the money laundering and terrorism financing (ML/TF) risks and vulnerabilities inherent in their operations as well as the absence of regulations and consumer protection measures.

“However, current trends globally have shown that there is a need to regulate the activities of virtual assets service providers (VASPs) which include cryptocurrencies and crypto assets. Following this development, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) in 2018 also updated its Recommendation 15 to require VASPS to be regulated to prevent misuse of virtual assets for ML/TF/PF.

“Furthermore, Section 30 of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 recognises VASPs as part of the definition of a financial institution.

“In addition, the Securities and Exchange Commission in May 2022 issued Rules on Issuance, Offering and Custody of Digital Assets and VASPs to provide a regulatory framework for their operations in Nigeria.

“In view of the foregoing, the CBN hereby issues this guideline to provide guidance to financial institutions under its regulatory purview in respect of their banking relationship with VASPs in Nigeria. “

The circular was signed by the Head, Financial Policy and Regulation Department, Haruna Mustafa.

Police Backtracks On Tinted Glass Permit To Curb Insecurity

0
Kayode Egbetokun - IGP

The Nigerian Police Force, NPF, has reintroduced the tinted glass permit for vehicle owners in the country.

This was made known by Muyiwa Adejobi, an Assistant Commissioner of Police and the Force spokesman in a statement he shared on his X handle on Thursday.

According to him, the force aimed to curb insecurity and criminal activities in the country through the permit.

Recall that the Force had in 2022 bared its men from demanding for tinted glass permit from motorists following serious complaints of harassment by not a few Nigerians that some policemen have turned it to a money-spinning business.

Recently too, some four police officers were charged in Lagos for demanding the permit from motorists.

But in the statement titled: Internal Security: Police Review Issuance of Tinted Glass Permit; Trains ICT Analysts, Enforcement Officers Nationwide For Compliance,” the force said “ICT Analysts and Enforcement Officers with the necessary skills and knowledge” will now be trained  “to regulate the registration process,” to make enforcement seamless.

Below the statement in full:

NTERNAL SECURITY: POLICE REVIEWS ISSUANCE OF TINTED GLASS PERMIT; TRAINS ICT ANALYSTS, ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS NATIONWIDE FOR COMPLIANCE.

In a bid to enhance national security and curb criminal activities facilitated by the misuse of tinted glass, the Nigeria Police Force has concluded its review of the issuance of tinted glass permits, previously banned in June 2022. The ban was initiated due to widespread concerns regarding the role of tinted glass in aiding heinous crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, the illegal transportation of firearms, human trafficking etc.

With the proposed lifting of the ban, stringent measures are being implemented to prevent abuse and ensure strict compliance with guidelines governing the issuance and use of tinted glass permits. ICT Analysts and Enforcement Officers nationwide will undergo a comprehensive training scheduled for the 29th of February, 2024, as a prequel to the reopening of tinted glass permit issuance.

The training will equip ICT Analysts and Enforcement Officers with the necessary skills and knowledge to regulate the registration process, guide registrants on the use of the portal where required, attend to complaints from members of the public, and enforce compliance effectively. It will focus on the intricacies of the new guidelines, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a delicate balance between public safety and individual freedoms while safeguarding national security.

The proposed tinted glass permit will incorporate distinctive features aimed at enhancing enforcement efficiency and security. These include a QR code linked to a central database for real-time verification, unique serial numbers correlated with vehicle and owner details, as well as a digital hologram ensuring authenticity and integrity, among other measures.

It is crucial to highlight that the guidelines for the issuance of tinted permits and the use of tinted glass will strictly adhere to the provisions of the MOTOR VEHICLES (PROHIBITION OF TINTED GLASS) ACT 1991 and other relevant extant laws. This strategic approach underscores the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to prioritize public safety while upholding individual rights and national security interests.

The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to providing updates to the general public on the implementation of the reviewed process of tinted glass permit issuance, ensuring transparency and accountability in its efforts to maintain internal security.

Obi Tackles FG On Inconsistent Duty Charges

0
Bola Tinubu and Peter Obi

The Chief opposition voice and the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 General Election, Peter Obi, has taken a swipe at the Federal government for their inconsistent duty charges at the nation’s ports.

Obi’s views were contained in an X handle message on the various actions and policies by this government that are making the business environment very hostile in the country.

“I wish to kindly call on the Federal Government of Nigeria to end the inconsistency in duty charges as it was affecting the general business atmosphere in the country. The federal government should stop the arbitrariness and ever-changing customs duties as it is now negatively impacting businesses and the cost of items, and this portends a huge danger to the economy.

“A situation where at the point of initiating importation, Form M and other documents related to the importation are based on a particular rate of exchange, for example, N1000 to $1, being the prevailing exchange rate at the time which the importer of goods has used to calculate the entire process, from the import initiation to receipt of goods in his warehouse. Then suddenly when the goods arrive in Nigeria, and duties are calculated at different rates, say N1400 to $1, it becomes a serious business challenge that results in business losses.

“Such arbitrary charges will obviously lead to further closure of businesses, and attendant job losses. This is because at the time of the initiation of the business, calculations, including duties, have been made based on the prevailing exchange rate, and the prevailing market prices.

“If this situation is not corrected, our importers may resort to using other ports of nearby countries, a situation that will leave our ports under-productive, and further deepen our economy into a worse situation.

“The government should also show consistency in its policies as this will help with economic forecasting and business planning. Businesses are dying and manufacturers are shutting down because of the poor and inconsistent economic policies of the government.

“All efforts of the government should be directed at supporting businesses, especially those in the manufacturing sector, to keep the businesses afloat and keep the economy growing, as the small business sector, remains the most critical engine of economic growth.

Hardship: Gowon Meet Tinubu, Begs Nigerians To Be Patient

0
Yakubu Gown Meets Tinubu in Aso Rock

A former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon has appealed to Nigerians to be patient with the federal government in its effort to address the current economic crisis in the country.

Gowon spoke after meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Aso Villa, Abuja, the nation’s capital on Wednesday.

The former leader’s appeal also come on the heels of similar ones by the president’s children, Seyi Tinubu and Folashade Iyabo-Ojo to Nigerians to give their father more time to address the problem of hunger in the country.

The cost of food and other households items have spiraled beyond control in the last few weeks, as inflation has risen to close to 30 percent, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS.

As a result, protests have surfaced in major cities across the country as angry Nigerians demand immediate solutions.

But speaking after a close door meeting with President Tinubu yesterday, Gowon urged Nigerians to exercise more patience, saying the government ‘is trying its best to deal with the various problems of the country.”

According to him, it’s too early to criticized President Tinubu, adding that no good leader would do anything against the interest of his people.

Gowon said: “I think the government is trying its best to deal with the various problems of the country but with Nigerians, you will get criticised.  People who get there know better than you know. I think all one can say is Nigerians, we’ve got to give the president time for things to be really done.

“It is too early to sort of say absolute result, perfect result will be achieved now. That is my opinion. I know and if I can remember when I was fighting the war, I was told I was too slow and that probably Nigeria cannot make it and that we should now seek discussion. Well, did we do it or not? They probably do not know the problem underground, so that is where we are.”

ECOWAS: Nigeria’s Former Leader, Gowon, Calls For Ceasefire, Urges Lifting Of Sanction Against Niger Republic

0

By Ayodele Oni

Worried by the turn of events in the once united and cooperative sub-continent, the Economic Community of West African States, (ECOWAS), a former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon has called for a cease fire among the feuding body.

Gowon, one of the founding fathers of the regional body advised that all parties in the present logjam should be ready to shift position just as he urged the lifting of the sanctions imposed on Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger Republic.

In an open letter to the Heads of State and the ECOWAS Member States, Gowon stated:

“I have noted with deep concern and sadness, the past and recent developments  unfolding in the West African sub-region, particularly the pronouncement by  Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger of their intention to exit from the Economic Community of West African States.

“As one of the founders of our regional economic community, it is incumbent upon  me to speak on behalf of the 14 Heads of State and Government who joined me in  Lagos, on 27th May 1975, to establish ECOWAS.

“Since its inception, the regional  bloc has made a number of major accomplishments, including trade liberalisation,  right of West Africans to live legitimately in any country within the community, as  well as successful peacekeeping operations in Liberia and Sierra Leone.

“ECOWAS, despite its shortcomings, has become an example of regional integration for the wider continent. Having achieved all of the above, it saddens me to learn that ECOWAS is threatened with disunity following the announcement by Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, three important member states, of their intention to leave the community.

“The impact of such a decision will have far-reaching implications for the ordinary citizens who have been the major beneficiaries of regional integration.

“Therefore, on behalf of all the founding fathers of the community and myself, I  urge the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, including the leaders of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, to put aside their differences and reunite for the peace, stability and prosperity of our sub-region.”

The former Nigerian Leader, while proferring solution to the crisis, suggested that “all West African leaders to immediately consider the lifting of all sanctions that have been imposed on Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali and Niger.

“All 15 ECOWAS Heads of State  should discuss the future of the community, regional security, and stability, as well as the role of the international community given the current geopolitical context.”

The crisis followed a military putsch in the three West African countries, which prompted the regional body, being led by President Bola Tinubu to impose sanctions on them.

In response to this, they announced their withdrawal from ECOWAS with a bow not to have anything to do with it.

The 15-nation ECOWAS was formed in 1975 to promote economic integration in member states.
