After Intervention By Gowon, Nigeria’s Fmr Head Of State,  ECOWAS Relaxes Sanctions On Niger, Mali, Guinea

By Ayodele Oni

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has resolved to lift economic sanctions on Niger Republic, Mali and Guinea.

The resolution was taken at the extraordinary summit on the peace, political and security situation in the ECOWAS sub-region in Abuja on Saturday.

The regional bloc, however, said the political and targeted sanctions remain. The West African bloc had in a swift response to the military coup in Niger, enforced a no-flight zone over the country.

The Nigerian government also cut off power supply to the military-ruled country to persuade the juntas to restore democracy in the country.

Former Nigeria military Head of State, Gen Yakubu Gowon had in a letter early in the week appealed to feuding parties to sheath sword.

Gowon, one of the founding fathers of the regional body advised that all parties in the present logjam should be ready to shift position just as he urged  lifting of the sanctions imposed on Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger Republic.

In an open letter to the Heads of State and the ECOWAS member states, Gowon stated that “I have noted with deep concern and sadness, the past and recent developments  unfolding in the West African sub-region, particularly the pronouncement by  Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger of their intention to exit from the Economic Community of West African States.

“As one of the founders of our regional economic community, it is incumbent upon  me to speak on behalf of the 14 Heads of State and Government who joined me in  Lagos, on 27th May 1975, to establish ECOWAS.”

One of the affected countries had also imposed flight ban on Nigeria in the wake of the crisis.

Governor Oyebanji Exonerates President Tinubu From Nigeria’s Woes

Biodun Oyebanji - Ekiti State Governor

By Akinwale Kasali

As Nigerians continue to lament the deplorable state of the nation’s economy, Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has exonerated President Bola Tinubu. The Governor said Tinubu is not   the architect of Nigeria’s economic woes.

Governor Oyebanji said that the state the nation found itself preceded Tinubu’s ascendancy to the office of President.

He, however, said the President is capable of fixing the current challenges if given ample time and necessary support.

Governor Oyebanji stated this during the monthly Evening of Praise and Worship programme held at the Lady Jibowu hall, Government House, Ado-Ekiti.

He urged Nigerians to be patient with the Federal Government as the problem the country is facing had been there long before the President emerged.

The Governor called on Nigerians to continue to pray for the President and his government so that the various decisions they will make would be to the interests of the people. He also urged them to always maintain peace and decorum as the President has continued to lessen the burden of economic hardship on the people with his various people-oriented programmes and policies.

While reminding the people that palliatives would not bring permanent solution to the food crisis, Governor Oyebanji called on every Nigerian to embrace farming and become productive in their own little way, and in the process support the growth and development of the country.

The Governor assured Ekiti people that the state would soon experience food sufficiency and become the food basket of the country, judging by the various programmes his administration is putting in place.

He likened the case of Nigeria to that of the Israelites where God took them from Egypt to the promised land flowing with milk and honey believing that Nigeria would soon experience abundance of all the good things the citizens have been craving for.

According to the Governor, “I just want to encourage us today as children of God to keep faith in God and to also amplify our prayers for Nigeria, for Ekiti state and for the President. I understand what we are going through, but the truth of the matter is that the President is not the cause of these crises but God has prepared him for a time like this. What he needs is our support, our prayers, our understanding and encouragement.

“I am just pleading with us that the President needs our help, he needs our prayers, we should not do anything to discourage him. We should thank God that we have a man of courage, a man God had prepared for a time like this, I believe in God that we will get out of this problem and when the time comes and the dividends of these reforms are unraveled, all of us will be alive.

“I thank Ekiti people for maintaining peace and I promise that we’ll continue to lessen these burdens, but the truth of the matter, which many people don’t want to listen to is that palliatives will not solve these problems, it can only be a temporary measure, when you give someone a bag of rice, in two weeks it would have finished.

“We have embarked on a programme that by next year, we will have food sufficiency in this state, because, if we don’t make haste now, I pray next year will not be worse than this. We must be able to grow ourselves out of hunger, which is what the President told us last week.

“Government will do its own bit, but you have to go back to the farm. So, no matter how small, let’s start bit by bit, you have to grow what you will eat and at least be able to feed ourselves.” Governor Oyebanji added.

As Nigerians Await Free Food; FG Says Delay Caused By Packaging

Bola Tinubu

As Nigerians await free food supplies from the federal government, President Bola Tinubu has said that the bagging of the grains, was responsible for the delay of the free distribution of 42,000 metric tonnes to Nigerians to tackle the current food insecurity.

The Minister of Agriculture on February 8, promised that the federal government would distribute millet, maize, and other food commodities to vulnerable Nigerians to ameliorate hardship.

But for almost three weeks, no grains or food commodities have been given to Nigerians as the economy bites harder with the high cost of food.

Explaining the delay, Special Adviser to the President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga said the bagging of grains is ongoing in seven strategic places in the country.

Onanuga also revealed that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been in charge of bagging the grains that would soon be delivered to indigent Nigerians.

The presidential aide stated that 60,000 metric tonnes of rice will be provided by the federal government to give to Nigerians.

“The Tinubu administration through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is in the final stages of releasing 42,000 metric tonnes of assorted food commodities to support the vulnerable population across the country.

“The grains in seven locations of strategic reserve, are now being bagged for onward delivery to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The need to bag the grains, caused the delay as the bags were freshly ordered by the government.

“Nigerians will not need to pay for the grain bags, as they are free.

“This will be complemented by the 60,000 metric tonnes of milled rice to be purchased by the Federal Government from the Mega Rice Millers.”

A young Pharmacist, identified as Henry Ogbuji has lost his life while in hot pursuit of gunmen who kidnapped his elder brother, Sunny Ogbuji.

Ogbuji, a native of Ohaji but who resided in the Irete Community where he built his house and did business from, had reportedly arrived home from his business in Owerri on the fateful day.

But as soon as he arrived home, he was told that gunmen had just kidnapped his elder brother, Sunny Ogbuji, who also live in the same area as he did.

Without giving a thought to the possible danger he was exposing himself to, he went in hot pursuit of the criminals, and, indeed, saw them along the Owerri-Onitsha road – Umungada Junction.

The criminals sensed that he was in their hot-pursuit, and was close to them. Not knowing if he had weapons with him, and wondering what gave him the courage to go after them, they paused and shot him on the chest.

While that was going on, his elder brother, Sunny,  who was already in their custody, jumped and managed to escape. But the Pharmacist died on the spot.

The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the story and assured that: “We are on top of the situation.”

Northern States Move To Cushion Effects Of Hunger During Ramadan

0

By Daniel Maduka

Apprehensive of the likely negative effects  which the current economic hardship in the country may exact on many Muslim ummah particularly the less privileged, during this year’s  Ramadan billed to commence between March 10 and 11 ,most Northern States authorities have decided to adopt some measures to ameliorate the plights of their citizens, The Source’s findings have revealed.

The annual Muslim Fasting period usually presents, a challenging situation economically to the less the privileged class ,who normally contend with rises in the costs of essential items mostly fruits which serve as appetizers before the breaking of each day’s fasting.

Ordinarily, and in a  relatively normal situation in the past, this challenging aspect, as well as other related difficulties were usually attenuated by the government and other public spirited entities and individuals through charity as enjoined by Islamic tenets.

However, checks by The Source ,have shown that while this year’s Ramadan challenges appear likely to be more excruciating, ameliorating  measures particularly from philanthropists and wealthy  individuals may witness a disproportionate decline owing to current economic realities on the ground.

At the moment , State authorities and perhaps a few  established non-state actors will be left to shoulder the task of ensuring a some what seamless fasting period for their less privileged Muslim brethren.

Only on Wednesday February 21, the Kano state government led the charge ,with the inauguration of a Ramadan Feeding Committee, with the mandate to strategize and come up with workable ways for the distribution of food across designated areas of the state during the fasting period.

The State Deputy Governor Comrade Aminu Abdulssalam Gwarzo who inaugurated the Committee in his office, said the programme aims to  assist all residents of the state irrespective of political party affiliations.

The Feeding Committee, which is headed by the state commissioner for Religious affairs Ahmad Tijjani Auwal ,is to identity key distribution spots within the 8 metropolitan local councils and the other 36 local government areas of the state ,recommending as well breakfast menus to be served targeted Muslim ummah and individuals deserving of government assistance during the Ramadan period.

The Source findings also revealed that most Northern states notably Jigawa ,Kaduna, Zamfara  Sokoto, Katsina and others have keyed into the Kano model with slight modifications in some cases.

In Katsina and Jigawa, some popular mosques and known religious centres will also be used to reach out to targeted people, in addition to some non state actors and organizations.

Similarly ,most states government in the region have gone out of their ways to solicit the assistance the well- to-do and known philanthropists to lend a hand of support .

Kano Ramadan Feeding Committee Chairman Tijjani Auwal ,while  assuring of the readiness of the Committee members to deliver ,however appealed for support from philanthropists and other charity organizations.

The Source reports that  the present high costs of living and economic meltdown had before now taken its toll on this year’s Hajji operation, with many shelving the trip to the Holy Land . Out of the officially alloted Hajj seats of 5,934 to kano intending pilgrims ,only about 2,300 applications were made as at February 12 when preparations for the exercise were stopped.

Herbert Wigwe, Access Bank and The Danger Of A Single Story

0

By Etim Etim

“Both Okoroji and Banire wrote from positions of ignorance and judged Wigwe wrongly and unfairly”

It was the venerated writer, Chimanda Adichie, who first warned us against the destructive influences of a single story in her now famous 2009 TED talk. Many did not take her seriously and a lot more probably do not know the import of her lecture. She described a single story as an overly simplistic and generalised perception of a person, place or thing; a narrative that presents only one perspective, repeated again and again. Chimanda asserts that the danger of the single story is that it can result in perspectives based on stereotypes.

Since the tragic deaths of my boss, brother and friend, Dr. Herbert Wigwe with his wife and son in that air crash over two weeks ago, many Nigerians have been astounded by the torrents of single stories on Herbert dredged up and circulated on some social media platforms. The depth of people’s cruelty and depravity in spawning these falsehoods against an innocent man even in moments of immense tragedies and pain is unfathomable.  They are out to inflict pain by fabricating lies and malicious propaganda against the dead.  Their intention is to destroy the memory of the dead banker, inflict pain on his aged parents, business partners and damage the reputation of the businesses he left behind.

The most popular of these stories is about the acquisition of Intercontinental Bank by Access Bank in 2012. In public, the purveyors claim that Intercontinental was a healthy bank when it was bought and that the then CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, had orchestrated the sale as a favour to his friends.  But in reality, these people are pained that Intercontinental is no longer available for them to plunder and steal from, and so, they resort to dissemination of malevolent attacks against the late Wigwe and his partner, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, who is obviously in mourning.

I was a senior management staff of Access Bank when the Intercontinental acquisition happened, and so I know about the transaction very well. In 2008, the CBN conducted a stress test of all banks in the country and came up with a verdict that some banks were healthy, others not so healthy and a few very distressed.  Intercontinental was severely distressed and was heading for a collapse. A further examination of the bank revealed a clear pattern of insider abuse and high-level frauds perpetrated by its directors and some members of senior management.  The frauds were so massive that the bank’s shareholders’ funds were completely eroded, and its capital was in the negative.

In 2009, the CBN sacked Mr. Akingbola and the Board of the bank and replaced it with an interim board as part of the remediation and rescue plan for the bank. The interim board was mandated to fashion out a recapitalisation plan for the bank. But in late 2011, about two years after Akingbola and his board were sacked, the CBN put up the bank for sale when it was clear that a recapitalization was not feasible.  In early 2012, the CBN approved Access Bank’s offer to take over the bank. In fact, even after the acquisition, Access Bank management discovered ‘’a far deeper hole’’ in the bank’s balance sheet than was previously revealed by the CBN’s examination and subsequent audit reports and due diligence.

In the years after his sack, Akingbola continued to face several court cases in UK and Nigeria in connection with his involvement in these insider abuses and frauds. I should note, at this point, that Mr. Akingbola is not the first Nigerian to lose a bank to insider abuse and fraudulent practices and Access Bank is not the first Nigerian bank to acquire another. Over 200 Nigerian banks have collapsed or been liquidated for severe capital impairment in the last 30 years or so. In July 2005, Tony Elumelu’s Standard Trust Bank merged with UBA and Union Bank was acquired by the Capital Alliance Group, while FCMB bought Finbank. There have been other mergers and acquisitions in the industry.

Akingbola’s legal troubles arising from his involvement in the collapse of Intercontinental are many. In December 2009, a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos granted a freezing injunction and attachment worldwide on all assets of Akingbola for total offences amounting to N346.185 million and £1.08 million. In July 2012, a Royal Court of Justice in London presided over by Mr. Justice Burton found Akingbola guilty of stealing and diverting billions of depositors’ funds and ordered him to repay more than £1 billion to the bank (Access Bank). He has also faced several charges from the EFCC. The acquisition of Intercontinental therefore arose from the mismanagement of the bank, the insider abuse and the fraudulent activities perpetrated by its directors. The transaction followed all due processes according to the laws of Nigeria and was approved by the courts and the regulatory authorities. If the CBN did not find a buyer for Intercontinental, the bank would probably have gone the way of Bank PHB and a few others that were not acquired and were on continued life support from the treasury. Thus, the purchase of Intercontinental by Access saved the nation a colossal waste of resources.

I have also read an article written by Mr. Muiz Banire, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), in which he flippantly referred to the acquisition of Intercontinental by Access Bank as ‘’tilapia swallowing a whale’’. This is a misleading and false imagery purportedly indicating that Intercontinental was bigger than Access at the time of the transaction. In the first place, the financial strength of a bank is not all about the number of branches it has and the height of its headquarter building, which the public usually see. Rather, its strength is measured in terms of financial ratios, namely: efficiency ratio; profitability ratio; capital adequacy ratio; income-expenditure ratio; deposits and return ratios. These are not visible to the public and may not be understood by those who are not financially literate. Intercontinental’s ratios were in the red when the acquisition occurred. Its huge after-tax loss of N321 billion for the year ended September 2009 was one of the biggest in the industry then. On the other hand, Access Bank was then in its tenth year after it was taken over by Herbert and AigbojeAig-Imokhuede. It was very profitable and the ratios were very positive. Senior lawyers like Banire have a responsibility to speak with some knowledgeability, otherwise they would misrepresent their clients.

Another nasty and deceptive single story that emerged soon after the death of Herbert Wigwe was an article published recently by Tony Okoroji, a former President of Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN), who now runs an organisation known as Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON). In the article, Okoroji wondered how Herbert made so much money to establish a university and why he named the university after his family’s name. He wrote: ‘’I’m in the creative industry and can understand the pitfalls of unbridled self-promotion’’. He then went on to allege that Access Bank has refused to release funds in the account of COSON to him and that the ‘’bank has looked for every silly reason to hold onto our money’’.

First, how did Herbert make all the money to establish a university? Herbert is one of the major owners of Access Corporation, the holding company of the bank, and as a publicly quoted company, Access Corporation publishes the particulars of each director in its annual reports and audited accounts every year. This is a statutory requirement for all quoted companies. Such details include number of direct and indirect shares held by the director and the dividend payments received by each director and shareholder. This will give Okoroji an idea of the man’s wealth if he cares to review the bank’s latest annual reports. In addition, Herbert’s family also has interests in other businesses, including construction. Why did Herbert name the university after his family? This is as silly a question as it can get. Organisations and institutions are named after their founders as a mark of honour or memorabilia to the memory of the founder or the family. Herbert is proud of the Wigwe family he hailed from, and the university was appropriately named to give honour to the family, just as Harvard (the oldest institution of higher learning in the US is named after John Harvard); Yale (named after Elihu Yale); Obafemi Awolowo University; Ahmadu Bello University, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, etc are named after great personalities. Many others across the globe like Albert Ludwig University, Freiburg, Germany; Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan; Alice Lloyd College, Kentucky, US; Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, England and Gregory University, Uturu, Abia State, among many others, are named after their founders.

Tony Okoroji’s claim that Access Bank has deliberately withheld COSON’s funds is a deliberate fabrication and obfuscation of information just to hoodwink the public and impugn the characters of those involved.  The fact is that some members of COSON – Premier Music, Ivory Music and Pretty Okafor – have sued COSON and the bank seeking to restrict the accounts of COSON. The case is still in court, and as a senior lawyer in Access Bank’s Legal Department told me, ‘’in keeping with the legal doctrine of Lis Pendis, the bank as a responsible corporate citizen cannot take any steps that will tie the hands or foist a fait accompli on the court’’. In other words, the bank cannot release the funds until the litigation is over. But Okoroji did not tell his readers that there is a pending case in court involving the accounts of the association. Rather, he blamed the late Herbert Wigwe for the delay in releasing his money and insinuated that the deaths of Herbert and another staff of the bank who died in December was a punishment from God for the bank’s delay in releasing the money. How mean-spirited can people be?

Finally, Herbert is no longer with us, and he cannot defend himself against all these baseless and putrid stories deliberately churned out to defame him and his legacy and traumatise his family and business associates. May God forgive those who are perpetrating these evil deeds and may the souls of Herbert Wigwe; his wife, Chizoba; son, Chizzy; and his friend, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, who died with him rest in peace. Amen.

Ondo Governorship: Aiyedatiwa Says Nobody Wants To Be Governor For A Year, Declares Interest

Lucky Aiyedatiwa

By Ayodele Oni

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa has declared that he will contest the November 16, 2024 Governorship election in the State.

The Governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress(APC) is expected to take place in April.

Before declaring his stand on the governorship, groups have emerged from local governments areas of the state drumming support for Aiyedatiwa.

Apart from participating as a sitting governor in the race, the zoning formular of the All Progressives Congress (APC) also favours his aspiration.

Aiyedatiwa, who succeeded his late principal, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu who was buried on Friday in Owo, said he would like to contest and win the forthcoming election as required by the constitution of the federal Republic of Nigeria for one more term.

Speaking on TVC News on Friday night, Aiyedatiwa, when asked if he would be contesting the Governorship election said, ”definitely, I will be running because I am already a sitting governor.

“Let me say this that nobody wants to be governor for one year. Give me what the constitution allows me to do, at least let me have a chance also running for one more term as it were.”

The governor denied having crisis with the late Akeredolu before he died, adding that it was few individuals in the state who were being driven by their ambition that caused the crisis in the state last year.

”Let me put this straight for the record sake, I never had issues with former principal, there was no time we had a face off, there was no time we had an issue that will demand that I have to make up with him.

”All that were being pushed out at a time were basically political, there were all falsehood and insinuations because election was coming and they knew the governor was so sick and a lot of things were at play.

“There was no time, I had an issue that I needed to resolve with him in terms of crisis. All that you saw at a time, were basically political. It was driven by the ambition of few people who knew there is going to be transition in the state and I was advantaged as the deputy.”

Obi Not Quitting Labour Party, Berates Mischief Makers

0
Peter Obi

“The Peter Obi Media Reach, POMR wishes to outrightly dismiss trending fake and fallacious news story suggesting that he was parting ways with the Labour Party.

“This is not true and it did not originate from Obi or the Obidient Movement but from mischief makers bent on sowing the seed of discord in the party.

“These rising misdemeanors on the party did not start today as they set out to destroy and disorganize the party all to get at Obi and derail the inevitable journey of rescuing Nigeria.

“Presently our principal is preoccupied with making Nigeria work not on partisan politics which ended on October 26, 2023, when the Supreme Court of the land took their final decision on the general elections.

Those bent on creating a crisis in the Labour Party are clearly enemies of democracy wishing for the failed status quo to remain.

OBI’s focus at the moment is on creating an environment where democracy is to be practiced according to the defined tenets not the rascality  and all forms of impunity prevalent in the country today

“Peter Obi therefore would like to assure Nigerians, particularly the Obidient family that his way with Labour is unshaken and intact and that the struggle to rescue Nigeria from the criminal gangs holding it down will not stop until it’s achieved through the will of the Nigerian people.”
