NLC Protest

By Akinwale Kasali

Against all odds, the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has gone ahead to begin its two-day nationwide protest over the economic hardship the citizens are experiencing.

The NLC and the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government had met Monday in a late push to stop the protests, but the meeting ended with no agreement reached between the parties, prompting the NLC to go ahead with the proposed protest.

As early as 7:00 am, protesters started gathering in different parts of the country, carrying placards with different inscriptions wearing paraphernalia of the NLC.

In Lagos State, there is heavy presence of security personnel curtailing the peaceful protest not to go rowdy or hijacked by miscreants, as the People expressed their frustrations at the current nationwide hardship.

At Ikeja Under Bridge where members of the NLC and Nigerians who joined the protest including the Nigerian Union of Teachers, (NUT),  Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) among others, who adorned their various paraphernalia are ready to hold the rally moving from the convergence point in Ikeja to the State House of Assembly in Alausa.

The presence of Police personnel, manning every major junction along the three kilometres planned route was sighted, following the Force’s promise to ensure peace and order during the protests.

Surprisingly, the Police were seen distributing Biscuit and Water to all the Protesters, which led to a resounding applause from the Protesters who hailed the Police for such kind gesture.

Oronsaye Report: Knocks For Tinubu After Appointing 48 Ministers

0
President Bola Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has received condemnation over his decision to now implement the Oransaye Report.

Recall that in 2011 former President Goodluck Jonathan commissioned a former Head of Service, Stephen Orosanye to look at how to make the government smaller, with a view to reducing the cost of governance, following complaints that Nigeria is ruining an over-bloated government.

On Monday, the federal government said it has now decided to implement the report, and has set up a committee for its implementation.

The development comes after a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar called on the administration to reduce the cost of governance.

The former vice president called on President Tinubu to emulate President Javier Milei of Argentina, economic reforms path.

Atiku said President Milei “came into the office with a comprehensive stabilization plan, which seeks to implement far-reaching measures within the context of a market-oriented economy.

“He started off cutting government expenditure by cutting the size of government and wastages; blocked stealing of government funds, and attracted Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) through concessions, tax holidays, and improved ease of doing business.

“President Milei flies regular business class for all his travels and does not offer the presidential fleet of Argentina for his son’s birthday.

“Likewise, there is no settlement for his hangers-on and political allies through unwieldy and burdensome appointments to public offices.

“Argentina’s Milei did not build the largest government like Tinubu did at a time when our economy was and still on its knees.”

The committee has been given 12 weeks to submit their report to President Tinubu, according to a statement released yesterday by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.

According to the minister, the president has directed the full implementation of the report, which may lead to the merging, subsuming, scraping and relocation of several agencies of government.

According to Idris who spoke  to journalists after the Federal Executive Council, FEC, the president has directed the committee head by Hadiza-Bala Usman, the President’s Special Adviser on Policy Coordination to submit the report withing three months.

The minister said, “So in a very bold move today, this administration, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, consistent again with his courage to take very far-reaching decisions in the interest of Nigeria, has taken a decision to implement the so-called Oronsaye Report.

“Now, what that means is that a number of agencies, commissions, and some departments have actually been scrapped. Some have been modified, and marked while others have been subsumed. Others, of course, have also been moved from some ministries to others where the government feels they will operate better.”

Meanwhile, not a few Nigerians insist that the administration may have put the cart before the horse with his decision to now implement the 800-page report.

The report recommended that 263 of the statutory agencies be slashed to 161; 38 agencies be scrapped; 52 be merged and 14 be reverted to departments in various ministries.

For instance, those criticizing the president insist that this may have come too late after Tinubu has already appointed ministers and heads of government agencies and parastatals that would now be merged, compressed of scrapped.

Apart from this, the administration’s critics say the president should have thought about this decision before appointing many ministers into his cabinet.

President Tinubu has been thoroughly criticized for appointing the highest number of ministers since the country returned to participatory democracy in 1999.

Since he came to power on May 29 last year, President Tinubu has appointed at least 48 ministers into his cabinet, against complaints from Nigerians that doing so would further increase the cost of governance in the country.

With this, his critics insist that President Tinubu has broken the records, by far, set by Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Yar-adua, Goodluck Jonathan, and Muhammadu Buhari.

“From all indications, some of these ministers are likely to be sacked or made junior ministers if the administration goes ahead with the implementation of the Oransaye report. What this means is that we are sending a bad signals to the world that we don’t know what we are doing as a country,” one analyst who insist that his name should not be mentioned, said on Tuesday.

Apart from the global perception the world now has on the unseriousness of the country, the source stated that the government, as usual, may not have considered the consequences of implementing the report.

“There is now that these agencies, ministries, parastatals would be merged, scrapped, subsumed without attendant job losses. Has the government considered this already, or they are embarking on another roadshow that is likely to lead to nowhere.”

My Involvement With Geometric Power – Gov. Otti

0

“In 2010, Prof. Barth Nnaji came to see me in First Bank, Lagos, where I served as an Executive Director.

“He needed the support of the bank to complete the project, the funding of which had been unfortunately stopped two years before, by the bank that originally started the project.

“This bank happened to be Diamond Bank. After securing approval for an $85m facility from First Bank of Nigeria, Geometric Power could not draw on the facility as it had become public knowledge that I was resuming as the Group Managing Director of Diamond Bank, shortly.

“As I resumed in Diamond on March 1, 2011, I put together a team that saw to the restructuring of the challenged facility and resumed funding of the project to completion.

“By the time I left Diamond towards the end of 2014, the three General Electric turbines and the 27km gas pipeline were in place.

“A combination of factors including ownership tussle over the Aba ring fence, sale of the oil block where the feed gas was going to come from to a new investor, and additional funding challenges conspired to delay project delivery for close to 10 years.

“On assumption of office May 29, 2023, my team and I quickly folded our sleeves and started working with Geometric to resolve the gas supply problem by directly interfacing with top management of NNPC and today we have gas flowing to the turbines.

“Just as recorded in Romans 8:28, “All things work together for good to them that love God”.

“I’m therefore pleased that 14 years down the line, God arranged everything such that the final resolution of all the issues and the firing of the turbines would happen when He had handed over the mantle of stewardship to me. May His name be glorified!”

Motorists were advised to cooperate with the traffic management officials deployed to manage traffic and ensure hitch-free movements to minimise discomfort during the 24 hours.

This is not the first time the Bridge had been shut for repair, amidst motorists’ complaints of the hardship they face during such closure.

Last year, the famous Bridge was shut from motorists for at least two times.

Tinubu’s Removal Of Fuel Subsidy Driven By Arrogance

0

Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has again criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for removing fuel subsidy.

A onetime ally of the president, Lawal said the decision was taken without due consultation with stakeholders in the country.

President Tinubu had at inauguration on May 29, 2023 ended the multi-billion-naira fuel subsidy regime in the now infamous ‘’subsidy is gone” statement he made during his speech as he took over power for his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari.

The decision had far-reaching implications on the economy as the prices of food and other essential households’ commodities spiked beyond expectations.

Not a few Nigerians have demanded the return to the old regime of the federal government subsidizing fuel for Nigerians, while the administration insist there is no going back.

Speaking during an interview with The Cable, the former SGF said the decision to remove fuel subsidy was too hasty, saying the president may not have considered the consequences before going ahead with it.

Lawal said “fuel subsidy removal was driven by a sense of arrogance” on the part of the president.

Below and abridge part of the interview:

My take is that fuel subsidy removal was driven by a sense of arrogance. You are now sworn in, and you believe that since you are now in charge, you can boss everybody around. You just announced the removal of the fuel subsidy without due consultation.

My experience in life is that when you are going to take a monumental decision, especially one that affects the lives of over 200 million people, you need to have wide consultations. Taking such a spur-of-the-moment decision on that very important issue is very insensitive, and probably he (Tinubu) was ignorant of the challenges he was going to face. That was why everything came crashing down immediately after he was sworn in because of the removal of the fuel subsidy. He ought to have waited, formed a cabinet, got every relevant person in place, and held discussions among his advisers and the cabinet. By so doing, they will get alternative solutions to the removal of subsidy, whether or not it should be done. If they agree that subsidy must go, what are the actions that will be put in place to mitigate the negative outcomes? If the outcomes are positive, they will also consider how to maximise them. They will also list their options. If this happens, then we fall back on this.

He has enough examples from the past to rely on. When (Sani) Abacha removed subsidy, he created the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) to channel the additional income into social development, and everybody today knows the various projects undertaken by the PTF, such as hospitals, schools, social services, and so on.

When (Olusegun) Obasanjo removed the subsidy, he created SURE-P to renovate roads and carry out social services. I don’t understand how my friend Tinubu got this arrogance that he could do things radically different from others who were before him and get results. So, he is only reaping the benefits of his hasty decision, and we are also reaping the benefits of putting in power somebody who works in a cavalier manner.

Bola Tinubu and Bath Nnaji

By Daniel Maduka

President Bola Tinubu has lauded the vision, mission, resoluteness and high level of commitment displayed by the promoters of Geometric Power Plant , particularly,  Professor Bath Nnaji in seeing the project through in the face of seemingly intractable challenges.

This is just as he has urged Governor Alex Otti of Abia state to continue in his pursuit of people oriented programmes, and noted that Abia residents are appreciative of his dedication and commitment to service.

President Tinubu who was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima spoke at the official commissioning of the 188 MW, gas powered turbines of the Electricity generating and distribution company in Aba on Monday, February 26 2024.

The President said the ambitious power project will serve to bolster the power needs of not only consumers within its area of operation, but that of the country.

While acknowledging the potential positive impact of the land mark investment on the task of rejigging the economy,  President Tinubu called on others to think along the line of progenitors of Geometric Power plant.

President Tinubu assured of his administration readiness to encourage and support investments of the nature of the $ 800 million Geometric Power Plant.

President Tinubu who confessed to being overwhelmed by the organic support being shown to Governor Otti ,admonished him to continue on the path of service delivery to the people, as Abia residents are genuinely appreciative of his commitment to transform the State.

“Before coming here ( Geometric Power Plant) ,I commissioned some roads in Aba metropolis. I must confess that I was pleasantly overwhelmed by the high level of organic support from the residents . It is a clear testament that the Governor is on the right track. My sincere advice ,is that he should continue with his people oriented programmes ” President Tinubu noted.

The Minister of Power Chief Adebayo Adelabu while expressing happiness with the completion of the signature project ,said with Geometric coming on steam, the country’ s power supply problems appear ameliorated.

He assured power consumers across the country that the federal government is making all efforts to halt arbitrary estimated billings by the Discos, adding that Geometric will add to the power supply capacity of the National Grid.

In his address, Governor Otti acknowledged the huge potentials of Geometric in the quest to grow the economy of Abia state .

Otti, who recounted his modest role from his years as the  Managing Director of Diamond Bank to now as the Abia State Governor, in ensuring that the Geometric dream is realized ,said the power plant is set to drive the economic recovery efforts of not only Abia state , but also that of the nation,

While calling on all relevant bodies to ensure steady and regular gas supply to the power generating and distribution outfits for  effective service delivery  to the consumers, he appealed to the Management of the  Power company to avoid any acts of exploitation of its consumer base.

The Geometric Power plant is expected to significantly improve the power supply needs of nine out of the 17 local councils of Abia.

The nine Local Councils fall within the Aba Ring Fence ,the official operation area of the company.
