The Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, has warned Nigerians to be wary and vigilant of fraudsters and scammers who have been circulating fake news about the Commission Recruiting New Officers into its fold.

The statement read: “The attention of the Federal Road Safety Corps has been drawn to a publication by online platforms misinforming the public about an ongoing recruitment of personnel into the services of the Corps.

“This medium is to let the public know that the Corps is presently not recruiting neither is there any ongoing arrangement to that effect.

“The Corps Marshal, Dauda Ali Biu wishes to admonish applicants seeking to join the services of the Corps, as well as the general public to disregard the fake and misleading publications.

“The public is by this publication warned to desist from any form of engagement with the purported scammers and purveyors of that misinformation as the Corps will not be liable should anyone fall victim.”

FG Flaunts Gains Of Fuel Subsidy Removal As Information Minister Says “States Now Receive More Funds”

By Ayodele Oni

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has revealed that state governments now receive almost amount which doubles their monthly allocation following removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government.

According to him, the erstwhile fuel subsidy was a monster which has deprived Nigerians of  myriad of social amenities.

Idris spoke on Saturday in Kaduna at a reception organized in his honour by the Kaduna State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).

He recalled that President Bola Tinubu, who took over the leadership of the country less than a year ago has recorded giant strides.

These included the removal of the fuel subsidy, which according to him, took virtually everything Nigerians were supposed to have.

Idris pointed out that the fuel subsidy took away the resources to build roads, hospitals, lay a good foundation for the educational advancement of Nigerians, among other social amenities.

He explained that with the removal of the fuel subsidy, a lot of resources were freed and put back into the system.

The minister added that the Federal Government and its sub-nationals now have more money for the needs and betterment of Nigerians.

“If we are looking for one reason why fuel subsidy has to go, is that we were consuming nearly two billion liters of premium motor spirit, when the fuel subsidy was removed, it dropped down to about 50 per cent.

“What that meant was that over a billion liters of fuel we are consuming in the country suddenly dropped.

”All those opposing the fuel subsidy removal are supposed to ask the question of where the about 1 billion liters of consumption that is cut down is going to.

“The resources that were freed are being brought back, there is no Governor that is not getting twice or more of the allocation available to their state government to engage in more productive ventures.”

He, however, said that the shocks as a result of the fuel subsidy removal were inevitable, but the action was not intended to suffer Nigerians but for their long term benefits.

The Minister emphasized that every successive government in Nigeria had hoped it would remove fuel subsidies.

Idris said, ”But only the President Tinubu’s led administration had the courage to do so alongside many other steps towards the betterment of the country.”

He added that the shocks, resulting from the fuel subsidy removal were cushioned by the implementation of wage award and the provision of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses for subsidized transportation.

Idris, however, stated that the CNG buses, which were not yet found everywhere in the country, has made the Federal Government set aside over N100 billion in the first instance to ensure their availability across Nigeria.

The Minister assured Nigerians of the Federal Government’s commitment to implement the outcome of the decision that would be brought out by the committee that inaugurated a new wage regime in the country.

Adanma Luke, the producer of the movie, “The Other Side of Life”, which featured Pope Obumneme Odonwodo popular as

Junior Pope who tragically lost his life in a boat mishap has said she regretted shooting the film in Asaba.

The distraught producer in a viral video said had she not only arrived late she was to be in the capsized boat which claimed the lives Juinor Pope and four other crew members when they were returning from a movie location on the River Niger.

Amid tears, Luke said:  “On the 10th of April, we lost five of our members who were on their way to a location through boat and had an accident.

“I’ve been so traumatized. I’ve been so cold. this whole thing, it still feels like a dream to me.

“I’ve not been able to make any statements since, because we’ve been trying to recover the bodies. I’ve been providing fuel money to those looking for bodies, provided caskets, ambulance to make sure the bodies were conveyed to their villages and families.

“I’ve not been quiet; I’ve been doing things just so these people can rest. It’s so sad that this happened on my set.

“I blame myself that I would have been in Lagos, doing my thing in Lagos. I blame myself for coming down to Asaba.

“I was supposed to be on that boat; my production manager was calling me to bring the memory card so they could start filming, and I told him to come and collect it.

“He said, ‘Mama, you know this place is far; please just bring it for us.’

“I said, ‘Okay, why haven’t you people crossed?’ He said they were waiting for Junior Pope to arrive.

“On the 9th, they went there on their own, Junior Pope came on his own. He came alone.

“So, on this 10th, while I was getting ready to go drop the card with them, I was accompanied by my brother’s children, two kids that were supposed to go with me. We were supposed to be on that boat together.

“Getting there, I saw Emeka, my D.O.P. He was just sitting. I was surprised because I didn’t see others. I asked Emeka, ‘What is it?’ And people surrounded him, Emeka was quiet.

“I said, ‘Emeka, talk to me. What is the problem? Why haven’t you people gone? Where is Ogolo? Where is everybody? Has JP come?’ He was quiet.

“I started shouting, ‘What is happening? Somebody talk to me.’ Emeka now said, ‘JP don go, Abigail don go, Friday don go, Precious don go.’

“I still didn’t understand what he meant by that. ‘What do you mean, don go, don go where?’ He said, ‘dem dey inside water.’

“I said, let me go and look for them. They started telling me that I should not go. I said, ‘Let me be there. Let me be sure the divers are looking for them.’ They said there were over 50 divers in the water looking for them.

“My director was saying that he didn’t know what happened. He was on a life jacket. Emeka, the D.O.P. was on a life jacket. There was still one life jacket available, I don’t know who had it.

“But my PM said that day they saw life jackets there and took them. He even told the late Friday to send one to Junior Pope, but Junior Pope said it was dirty, so he didn’t take it.

“These people with the life jackets survived. They also told me that when they were in the water trying to survive, Junior Pope was also there, asking if everybody was okay. They even threw a gallon to him to hold himself, which he was holding, but all of a sudden, they didn’t see him again.

“It was when they came out that they noticed that he was no longer there because they said divers came and rescued some of them while other divers were still there trying to rescue others”.

Continuing, Luke said:  “I still can’t believe this. These crew members were my family. They’ve been working with me. If I’m working in Lagos, they’ll come from Asaba to come and work with me.

“All through last year, we stayed together in Lagos. We were filming and working together.

“This is my first time working with JP. He’s my friend. The wife is my friend too.

“I talked to the wife sometime, and that was when she said, ‘Why aren’t you giving my husband work?’ JP said, ‘Ada, you be my friend, why you no dey give me work?

Middle East: US Pledges ‘Ironclad’ Support For Israel Amidst Iran Strike

0
Joe Biden

Iran launched explosive drones and fired missiles at Israel late on Saturday in its first direct attack on Israeli territory, a retaliatory strike that raised the threat of a wider regional conflict, as the U.S pledged “ironclad” backing for Israel.

Sirens wailed and Reuters journalists in Israel heard distant heavy thuds and bangs from what local media called aerial interceptions of explosive drones. Authorities said a 7-year-old girl was critically injured.

United States President Joe Biden, who spoke by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said he would convene a meeting of leaders of the Group of Seven major economies on Sunday to coordinate a diplomatic response to what he called Iran’s brazen attack.

Six months into an Israeli-Hamas war in Gaza and amid growing risks of a greater regional war, Axios quoted a senior White House official as saying Biden also told Netanyahu the U.S. would oppose any Israeli counterattack against Iran.

The U.N. Security Council was set to meet at 4 p.m. ET (2000 GMT) on Sunday after Israel requested it condemn Iran’s attack and designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organization, according to a schedule released late on Saturday.

Israel’s military spokesperson, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, said Iran launched dozens of ground-to-ground missiles at Israel, most of them intercepted outside Israeli borders. They included more than 10 cruise missiles, he said.

The Iranian salvo of more than 200 drones and missiles caused light damage to one Israeli military facility, Hagari said.

The Israeli military later said it was not advising any residents to prepare to take shelter. This revision of an earlier alert appeared to signal the end of the threat.

Israel’s Channel 12 TV cited an unnamed Israeli official as saying there would be a “significant response” to the attack.

Iran had vowed retaliation for what it called an Israeli strike on its Damascus consulate on April 1 that killed seven officers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including two senior commanders. Tehran said its strike was punishment for “Israeli crimes”. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for the consulate attack.

“Should the Israeli regime make another mistake, Iran’s response will be considerably more severe,” the Iranian mission to the United Nations said, warning the U.S. to “stay away”. However, it also said Iran now “deemed the matter concluded”.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said America did not seek conflict with Iran but would not hesitate to act to protect U.S. forces and support defence of Israel.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned Iran’s attack, saying he was “deeply alarmed about the very real danger of a devastating region-wide escalation.”

Russian Deputy U.N. Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy said on the Telegram social media app that in addition to a letter from Israel, the Security Council had received one from Iran asserting its attack was within the U.N. Charter framework governing the right to self-defence.

“The latter warns that if Israel responds, Iran will respond in a more powerful and decisive manner,” Polyanskiy said.

Biden, who on Friday had warned Iran against an attack, cut short a weekend visit to his home state of Delaware and returned to Washington to meet with his national security advisers, including his secretaries of defence and state, in the White House Situation Room. He pledged to stand with Israel.

“Our commitment to Israel’s security against threats from Iran and its proxies is ironclad,” Biden said on X after the meeting.

The war in Gaza, which Israel invaded after an attack by Hamas on Oct. 7, has ratcheted up tensions in the region, spreading to fronts with Lebanon and Syria and drawing long-range fire at Israeli targets from as far away as Yemen and Iraq.

Drones were also reportedly launched against Israel by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group, British maritime security company Ambrey said in a statement.

Those clashes now threaten to morph into a direct open conflict pitting Iran and its regional allies against Israel and its main supporter, the United States. Regional power Egypt urged “utmost restraint”.

While Israel and Iran have been bitter foes for decades, their feud has mostly unfolded via proxies or by targeting each other’s forces operating in third countries.

U.S. and British warplanes were involved in shooting down some Israel-bound drones over the Iraq-Syria border area, Israel’s Channel 12 reported. The U.S. military knocked down dozens of drones and missiles bound for Israel, three U.S. officials said.

Biden said he had directed the U.S. military to move aircraft and ballistic missile defence destroyers to the region over the course of the past week.

“Thanks to these deployments and the extraordinary skill of our servicemembers, we helped Israel take down nearly all of the incoming drones and missiles,” he said.

ESCALATION

Netanyahu convened Israel’s war cabinet at a military headquarters in Tel Aviv, his office said.

Israel and Lebanon said they were closing their airspace on Saturday night. Jordan, which lies between Iran and Israel, had readied air defences to intercept any drone or missile that violated its territory, two regional security sources said.

Residents in several Jordanian cities said they heard heavy aerial activity.

Syria, an ally of Iran, said it was putting its ground-to-air defence systems around the capital and major bases on high alert, army sources there said.

The European Union, Britain, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Mexico, the Netherlands and Norway condemned Iran’s attack.

Biden’s Republican rival in November’s presidential election, Donald Trump, briefly referred to the airstrikes at a rally in Pennsylvania, criticizing his Democratic rival.

“They’re under attack right now,” Trump said. “That’s because we show great weakness. This would not happen, the weakness that we’ve shown, it’s unbelievable, and it would not have happened if we were in office.”

Israel had been bracing for an Iranian response to the Damascus consulate strike since last week, when Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Israel “must be punished and shall be” for an operation he called equivalent to one on Iranian soil.

Iran’s main ally in the region, the Lebanese Shi’ite group Hezbollah that has been exchanging fire with Israel since the Gaza war began, said early on Sunday it had fired rockets at an Israeli base.

By Adesina Soyooye

Obumneme Odonwodo, popular as Junior Pope, the Nollywood Actor who drowned along with four others in a tragic boat accident, may have unwittingly, contributed to his avoidable end.

He, allegedly rejected a life jacket given to him to wear because, according to him, it was dirty.

This was revealed by the Producer of the ill-fated film, Adanma Luke in her first comment since after the incident which shook the Nollywood Industry and not a few Nigerians. She, however, did not disclose if others, including the dead and survivors were offered life jackets or not. Only two crew members were confirmed to have worn their life jackets. Both survived.

Luke, in a series of videos she released on Saturday where she spoke said Junior  Pope refused the life jacket given to him to wear because he considered it dirty.

Luke has come under criticism for not making sure that her crew had life jackets before they boarded the boat.

But exonerating herself from  blame over the life jacket issue, she said that a life jacket was given to the late actor which he turned down on the grounds that it was dirty.

And in a bid to dismiss the impression that she hired a bad boat and an inexperienced boat driver, she said that she would have been on the boat with her brother’s two young children but for the fact that the crew insisted on her going back to get a memory card. She did, and by the time she came back, she not only missed the boat, but she was faced by tales of the tragedy.

Explaining her current state, she said she was confused and that the whole incident seems like a bad dream to her and still unbelievable.

She regretted going to Asaba for her production and lamented that she should have stayed back in Lagos for the production.

Her story: “On the 10th of April, we lost five of our members who were on their way to a location through boat and had an accident.

“I’ve been so traumatized. I’ve been so cold, this whole thing, it still feels like a dream to me.
