By Akinwale Kasali

Gen. Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defense Staff, has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to intensify its effort in tracking terrorism funding in the country, stressing that this is a means of curbing Terrorism globally.

Musa added that the EFCC needs to further beam its searchlight by tracing funds related to terrorism.

A statement by the Director, Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau,  stated that the CDS said this  during a visit to the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, in Abuja.

Musa also described the legal system of the country as “soft”, lamenting that the system is delaying the prosecution of suspects.

According to him, the delay experienced in the prosecution of suspects had become one of the major challenges for the military.

The statement partly reads:

“The CDS called for the tracking of terrorism funding in Nigeria, being one of the non-kinetic means of fighting terrorism across the globe.

“The CDS further informed the Chairman of the Anti-Graft body that AFN synergises with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited and other stakeholders to fight oil theft in the country.

“He lamented that the issues of blocking loopholes brought about by the siphoning of oil and the soft legal system which delays the prosecution of suspects have been major challenges.

“The CDS also called for the installation of Closed-Circuit Television Cameras at strategic locations, adding that it would help in the fight against crime in the country.

“He harped on the use of census, and installation of Closed-Circuit Television Cameras in strategic points to contain cases of corruption, terrorism, and other forms of insecurity in the country,” Musa said.

He noted that the military had zero tolerance for corrupt practices.

“The AFN adopts the proceedings of a General Court Martial to checkmate culpable personnel, ” the CDS added.

Musa, however, urged the EFCC boss to encourage public office holders and other Nigerians in positions of authority to uphold good governance to forestall economic breakdown and insecurity.

Tye EFCC Chairman, Olukoyede, stated that the war against corruption must be won as the menace has destroyed the nation’s economy and at the same time dented the image of the country.

He warned that if drastic measures are not taken, the country would be put into jeopardy in the next 10 years.

“As a means to mitigate the menace caused by corruption and insecurity, the chairman posited that cognitive responsibility has to be embraced by the military and other security agencies, adding that the war against corruption should be seen as everybody’s business. Furthermore, he said EFCC, the military, and other security agencies have to join forces in fighting corruption, ” the statement added.

Daniel Bwala, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chieftain and Former Spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign Organization in the 2023 Presidential Election has applauded President Bola Tinubu for the intervention his administration has, allegedly, made in rewriting the wrongs of previous Governments.

Bwala said that President Tinubu has taken a bold step in reforming the nation. He also applauded him for calling on the oppositions  to join hands with him in building the nation.

He added that the President has put aside politicking because he knew that there must be a country in existence before politics.

Bwala said this on Arise Television during an interview.

He explained that he had no regret joining the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

In his words, he said, “I have no regret going to PDP or supporting Atiku. I do my things based on conviction and at the end of the day, if it doesn’t work out, I accept my fate.

“The reality I have accepted now is that this politicking is gone and because of the crisis in Nigeria, the only way we can have a 2027 election is when Nigeria is safe and secure.

“I saw that this president I supported in APC is trying to ensure he rewrites the wrongs of the past administration.

“When he said he wanted all opposition to come together for nation building, I felt it was the right time to look at nation’s building rather than politicking. There must be a Nigeria before we do politics.”

President Bola Tinubu has remarked that the nation’s treasury is sacrosanct and must not be abused.

The President assured that his administration will deploy resources to critical sectors and areas with significant impact on the welfare of Nigerians.

A statement by Presidential Spokesman, Ajuri Ngalele stated that Tinubu spoke at a meeting with the Forum of State Chairmen of the All Progressives’ Congress (APC) at the State House in Abuja on Friday.

“As we are fighting corruption, smugglers, and old subsidy beneficiaries, they most certainly will fight back. All those who falsified records and became losers with the subsidy (on petroleum products) removal, they will fight back.

“But we will defend our people. The treasury belongs to the people, and that sacred trust must not be abused.”

The President assured Nigerians that his government is working around the clock to improve their living conditions, and asked leaders at the grassroots level to encourage citizens to get their National Identification Number (NIN) for planning, structuring interventions and to achieve their full integration into various relief programmes.

“The programme of our government will be truly progressive; student loans, a national consumer credit system, and social welfare for the unemployed, as well as graduates.

“Every Nigerian will find a place of belonging in our country. In the eye of even the biggest hurricane, we will find that place of tranquillity and prosperous harmony for the benefit of all. Nigerians will all partake on this national journey to prosperity.”

Emphasizing the central role of agriculture in expanding and accelerating Nigeria’s economic growth, President Tinubu told the state party chairmen, led by the National Chairman of the APC, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, that his government had already drawn up a blueprint for large-scale livestock farming, which will be activated soon.

“We are bringing mechanized farming to the fore. Yesterday’s crisis will become today’s opportunity. Fertilizers are being supplied to farmers as we speak.

“Agriculture and economic diversification provide the answers to our problems. We will not continue to import food. We know how to turn lack into abundance, and the world will watch us do it again.”

President Tinubu pointed out that the repositioning of the economy is a top national priority as he urged party members not to wait for an appointment before bringing good governance and exemplary civic engagement to the doors of Nigerians.

“I urge the state chairmen that regardless of party affiliation, let us help citizens by mobilizing them for NIN registration. Not just PVCs.

“Some are poor Nigerians who have not experienced formal education and have no understanding of what NIN is and how it will benefit their lives. We must teach them. We must care for them.

“Without NIN, we can not embark on social security interventions for the vulnerable. We will be making faulty moves without accurate data and iron-clad, digital intervention structures.

“I have established a committee of governors, and it is headed by the Vice President, Sen. Kashim Shettima. It is working on what must be done to further lift our people.

“We need to give hope, and we are giving it to the country and our citizens. We are working hard, day and night, even though some agents of destabilization are present in the polity. Nigerians, with our focused support, shall defeat them,” the President affirmed.

APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje said the party is nearly set to establish the Progressive Institute of Policy and Development for the benefit of its members and the broader Nigerian public.

Association of Northern Nigerian Student (ANNS) has thrown its support behind Senator Abdul Ningi representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, over his budget padding allegation.

Already, the Senator is currently on suspension over the allegation following his inability to defend the budget padding allegation.

The Northern students threatened to shut down the National Assembly if after 48 Hours, Ningi is not recalled.

This was contained in a statement signed by the president of the association, Sani Adamu and released on Thursday in Abuja.

The statement reads “With humongous dismay and grievances in our heart, the leadership of Association of Northern Nigerian Student totally condemned the decision of the Senate Leadership over the Suspension of Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi.

“As Nigerians may all be aware few days ago, Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi allege Senate President of budget padding which #3.7 Trillion remains unaccounted for in the 2024 budget, without specific project.

“It is ridiculous for the Senate Leadership to suspend our entire voice of the Northerners in the senate because we believe in the effective Leadership of Sen. Abdul Ahmed Ningi towards protecting the interest of the North and the Nation at large

“Mr President of the Senate, we want to remind you incase you have forgotten the duty and responsibility of the Legislature.

“Of course what Sen. Abdul Ahmed Ningi did is part of his duty to checkmate the budget, ensure full implementation, and make laws for the country.

“We are proud of Sen. Abdul Ningi the fact that he proves to his constituents that he knows what he is doing as well he is representing them very well not as other senators that are sleeping in the Senate, while others are afraid of such brutality and indeed some are only fighting for their pockets.

“In this regard, we will not fold our hands and keep watching this dictatorship of the Senate Leadership which can cause our representatives to be fear of standing and protecting our legitimate interest that will bring development into our Constituency.

Kidnappings: Military Blames Inability To Rescue Victims On Delayed Reporting, Confirms Assistance From Foreign Countries

By Ayodele Oni

The Nigerian Military has lamented that delay in reporting some cases of kidnapping to Security Agencies is hampering rescue efforts.

It declared kidnappers as terrorists, and not bandits for holding citizens against their will and against all norms of human behaviour, and against the laws of armed conflict and any good measure in the world.

Director Defence Media Operations, Maj. General Edward Buba made the declaration on Thursday, during the bi-weekly press briefing on the ongoing counter insurgency war.

Maj. General Buba lamented cases of citizens being abducted in the North East, North West and North Central theatres of operations.

“These citizens were abducted by a brutal and blood tasty group that should only be addressed as terrorists, and not bandits. I repeat, these are terrorists and not bandits.”

He confirmed that the military is leveraging on support from other countries to tackle the issue of insecurity in the country.

“We have leveraged on our international partners for support. Accordingly, they are providing the necessary support including intelligence that is giving us the advantage in dealing with the ugly situation.

He said the hostage situation is an extremely sensitive one which unfortunately is not unprecedented in the history of the ongoing war.

“These hostages are being held in locations that are difficult to get to, but not out of reached. The situation is however indicative of the desperation of these terrorists to detour troops onslaught by all means.

According to Maj. General Buba three major significant abduction cases which includes on 9 March 2024, terrorist invaded and kidnapped 16 pupils (Almajiris) with a woman in Gada LGA of Sokoto State.

“The incident, which took place about 0100hrs was not reported to troops until about 1500hrs of same day. The late reporting of the incident affected troops response time in the ongoing search and rescue effort.

“Also on 3 March 2024, troops received information from coordinator Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) about suspected abduction of unknown number of IDPs by suspected terrorists in Gamboru Ngala LGA of Borno State.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that IDPs left camp to undisclosed location to fetch firewood beyond the permissible distance. They reportedly did not notify the camp authorities of their movement.

“It was later at about 2030hrs at night, when the IDPs did not return to camp that alarm was raised as to their possible abduction by terrorist.

“It was at that stage that troops were notified of the incident. The standard practice was for troops to be notified prior to any movement of IDPs beyond the permissible distance of 5-7 kms from their camp.

“The IDPs reportedly went beyond the permissible distance to get firewood as a result of deforestation around their camp. The terrorist abducted 112 IDPs in the process. Nevertheless, effort is ongoing to get back the hostages.

“The incident was not reported until several hours after the occurrence. The delayed reporting of the incident adversely affected troops response time in the ongoing search and rescue effort.

“These abduction cases were carried out due to cowardice exhibited by terrorists going for such soft targets to impede troops advances.

“I assure you that we will not rest until they are returned because in recent times troops have decimated several of the terrorist leaders, commander and foot soldiers in and fast closing in one several others.

“Given the hostage situation, it can be deduced that the search and rescue effort was grossly affected by the none timely notification of troops of the incident. Nevertheless, I can assure you that we will not rest until these hostages are returned.”

CBN Board: Tinubu Withdraws South east Nominee, Onwudiwe For Supporting Obi

0
The nomination of Ruby Onwudiwe as member representing the South east in the board of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has been withdrawn.
Onwudiwe’s name was sent to the Senate on Tuesday by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for confirmation but her nomination has now being withdrawn for allegedly supporting Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election.
The president had requested her to be confirmed expeditiously so that she could join other four members who had earlier been confirmed by Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber.
The directors of the board already confirmed are; Robert O. Agbide, Ado Yakubu Wanga, Murtala Sagaley, and Olayinka Aliyu.
The magazine reports that Onwudiwe’s nomination  followed the rejection of the position by Urom Eke, a world bank consultant who cited conflict of interest for his decision not to join the CBN board.
According to those privy to the issue, the South east nominee was dropped by the president after top echelons in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC , protested that she backed the LP candidate in the last presidential election.
Following her nomination, some APC leaders had contacted the president, protesting the nomination of Onwudiwe who they said refused to back Tinubu for the presidency.
“The normal tradition in democratic government is for the winner to take it all. There are members of our party who can take up that position having worked for the party to win the election. Giving such important position to someone who’s apparently in the opposition is an abberation, and it undermines the interest of our loyal members,” a chieftain of the party in Lagos said.
President Tinubu was declared the winner of  the election last year with Obi, the LP candidate coming a distant third.
Meanwhile, Presidency sources informed the magazine that President Tinubu would send the name of a nominee from the south east to the Senate to fill the position before next week.
