Fake Doctor attested in Ekiti

By Ayodele Oni

The mysterious death of a patient at the Ijesa-Isu general hospital, in Ekiti State has exposed the identity of the health personnel that handled her case to be fake.

The suspected fake doctor, Olalekan Timothy Fasipe, was employed about ten years ago by the Ekiti state health management board as a dentist but now a medical director at Ijesa Isu general hospital.

He was reported to have earlier been involved in a similar case at Ijero Ekiti general hospital where he was transferred to his present work place to cover the incident.

The Nigeria Medical Association, Ekiti State Branch has disowned the suspected fake doctor, who has now arrested on the allegation of Forgery of his full registration certificate with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, (MDCN).

Olalekan who is a staff of Ekiti State Hospital Management Board had been parading himself as a qualified Doctor without necessary certificate and qualifications.

In a statement by the NMA Chairman in Ekiti State, Dr. Babatunde Rosiji and the Secretary, Dr. Moses Dada said the association has been on a crusade to address medical quackery in partnership with the State Government through the Ministry of Health and Human Services.

According to the Ekiti NMA, “We are currently rattled with the arrest of Olalekan Timothy Fasipe, an employee of the Hospitals’ Management Board who also served as a member of Ekiti NMA State Officers’ Committee until his arrest.

“Ours is a noble profession with very high ethical standards as our calling places on us the demand to care for human lives; a calling which is tasking but also brings so much gratification to be privileged to have such a critical role.

“The training of medical doctors is rigorous and it culminates in the inclusion of a medical graduate’s name on the register of Medical Practitioners in Nigeria, whether foreign-trained or locally-trained.

“We have remained in close communication with the Hospitals’ Management Board and the State Ministry of Health and Human Services and we are doing everything possible to ensure that the case is thoroughly prosecuted.

“For the avoidance of doubt, anyone whose name is not on the register of Medical Practitioners in Nigeria who parades himself as a medical doctor is an impostor and a criminal”

“We are also using this opportunity to sound a note of warning to everyone whose name is not on the register of medical practitioners in Nigeria who may be parading himself or herself as a medical doctor in Ekiti State that the arms of the law will certainly catch up with you”

The leadership of Ekiti NMA expressed confidence in the ability of the Nigeria Police Force and Ekiti State Ministry of Justice to leave no stone unturned in getting to the root of the matter and expand their net to capture as many other impostors as may be within the State.

Ekiti NMA said since the case is under investigation, no further comment will be made in order not to jeopardize the ongoing investigation.

It assured the entire citizens of Ekiti State to remain calm as the relevant agencies of Government continue to work on the case and urged relevant agencies of government to ensure that all health practitioners in the State possess valid and up to date annual practicing licence.

The Association, therefore, urged hardworking members not to allow the current situation affect their psyche as effort is ongoing to continue providing uninterrupted clinical care to the teeming population of the State especially in the face of the increasing workload occasioned by the unabating japa trend.

THE three tiers of government – Federal, state and local governments – shared N10.143 trillion from the Federation Account as statutory revenue allocations in 2023.

Dr Ogbonnaya Orji made this known in a report by the Executive Secretary, Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN reports.

According to Orji the revelation was necessary to show transparency in how the nation’s resources are shared by the constitutionally recognized tiers of government.

The report said the federal government received the highest revenue of N3.99 trillion, representing 39.37 percent of the total allocation.

He added that the 36 states got N3.585 trillion representing 35.34 percent while the 774 local government councils shared N2.56 trillion, equivalent to 25.28 percent.

Orji said: “A further analysis of the N10.143 trillion disbursements in 2023 showed an increase of N1.934 trillion or 23.56 percent when compared to the disbursement of N8.209 trillion shared in 2022.

“The review attributed the increase to improved revenue remittances to the Federation Account due to the removal of petrol subsidy and the floating of the exchange rate by the new administration.

“The report highlighted that while total revenues distributed from the account recorded an increase of 23.56 percent in 2023, the increase accruing to each tier of government varied due to the type of the revenue streams contributing to the inflows into the Federation Account,” he said.

Meanwhile, not a few Nigerians insist that they are yet to see improvement in their lives despite the humongous revenue shared by the three levels of government.  To them, the higher funds shared by the governments only reflect in the ostentatious lifestyles of state officials.

Bashir Ahmad, an aide to former President Muhammadu Buhari has applauded the decision of the Government of Abia state to borrow $125 million from the Islamic Development Bank.

Governor Alex Otti had during a press conference on Monday, disclosed that the state has indeed taken the loan to develop critical infrastructure in the state.

His admonition followed criticism on the social media from the governor’s critics who said decision was wrong because Abia is a ‘christian’ state considering the population of the adherents of the faith in the state.

Other critics of the state governor also slammed him for taking loan in the early days of his government, compared to Anambra, a neighbouring state where Governor Charles, after two years in office has yet to obtain any loan facility.

Governor Soludo had during the commissioning of projects to mark his two years in office, said the state had yet to obtain loans.

But endorsing Governor Otti’s decision to obtain the loan, Ahmad said the loan would assist the state in providing key infrastructure capable of touching the lives of the people of the state.

He said the fact that the loan is an interest free facility is a plus for the governor in his quest to ensure rapid development of the state.

The former presidential aide who posted on his X handle on Wednesday said “Governor Alex Otti has indeed made a wise decision” the $125 million loan IDB.

According to him, ‘Islamic banking, being interest-free, aligns with the ethical guidelines of Islam, which perceive money as a means of exchange rather than a commodity that can generate income through interest. This principle ensures that financial transactions contribute directly to economic activities and development without the burden of interest, which can sometimes be prohibitive.

“Islamic finance emphasizes partnership and the sharing of profit and risks. This approach encourages a sense of mutual responsibility and ethical investment.

“In the context of Abia State, the utilization of Islamic finance can provide several advantages. It can enable the state to undertake essential capital projects without the long-term financial strain that interest-bearing loans might impose.”

May state governments have obtained loan from the bank, which is one of the biggest creditors to the Nigerian Government.

The House of Representatives on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, resolved to summon the Minister of Health, Dr Tunji Alausa, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry to explain the circumstances surrounding the award of contract for the procurement of anti-Malaria drugs and other medical items.

The Summon of the Minister and officials of the Health and Social Welfare Ministry followed  an investigative hearing conducted by the House Committee on Aids ,Tuberculosis, and Malaria Control into a petition forwarded by a law Firm- Season Laws on behalf of Rosie Textile Mills Limited against the Ministry ,alleging the exclusion of indigenous manufacturers of insecticidal nets from participating in the bidding process for the procurement of Insecticidal nets and  other medical facilities.

Chairman of the House Committee, Hon Amobi Ogah who issued the summon notice said the action of the committee became inevitable following the refusal of the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary to honour three previous invitations .

According to Hon Ogah who is representing Isukwuato/ Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State, all parties involved in the procurement process have been summoned to account for the fund ,which was borrowed from the World Bank and Islamic Bank.

“Nigeria borrowed $100 million from Islamic Bank which was approved by the National Assembly in 2021 . Out of the $100 million ,$ 10 million was a grant and another $ 200 million borrowed from the World Bank in the same year for Impact Project ( Malaria Financing Agreement) making it a total of $300 million .

The resolution of the National Assembly is that Local Content must be prioritized to encourage Local Manufacturers ,but the ministry went ahead to contract UNOPS to  handle the procurement exercise at the cost of $ 300 million for the purchase of anti malaria drugs and other medical items .” Hon Ogah stated

The House Committee Chairman noted that instead of appearing before the committee to explain things, the Permanent Secretary  resorted to sending people to lobby the members instead.

He regretted that most times ,the civil servants have been frustrating genuine efforts by the government to serve the people .

“This money has been available since 2021. We have been inviting the Permanent Secretary . This is the third time that we are inviting her  to come and explain to us what happened .

“Have you used the money ? If they have not used the money ; then where is the money?  If you have used the money to buy anti-malaria drugs and other medical items; then where are the drugs and items? It is a matter of simple explanation.

“But they have been running away ,calling on all manner of people to talk to us .But we are here to defend Nigerians . We are elected to represent our people . Nigerians can not continue to die of Malaria even Government has made efforts to see that the eradication of Malaria is achieved by 2030 ” Hon Ogah noted

Alex Otti and Emeka Offor - Alaoji Power Plant

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti, has assured that all necessary assistance will be given to the Niger Delta Power Holding Company in its efforts to carry massive improvement of its power generating plant at Alaoji, Ugwunagbo Council area of the State ,for the purpose of equally improving the power supply needs of Abia and the country in general.

Governor Otti expressed optimism that the power plant, a combine Circle Gas Turbine CCGT, now in line for a massive upgrade ,if completed will help transform the electricity sector in the country, grow the economy, and foster development across the country.

The Abia Governor who spoke on Tuesday, March 19, when he  visited the Power plant, promised that the State Government will support the handling firm, Engineering, Procurement and Construction Contractor EPC , Chrome Group to successfully carry out the project.

He noted that he has already requested  the owners of the power plant to ensure that the first set of power that will be generated from the plant will be transmitted and distributed through the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company EEDC to Umuahia the State Capital ,and other parts of Abia that are not covered by Geometric power plant .

” I will like to congratulate Sir Emeka Offor, and the Chrome Group for the wonderful job they are doing here. This is the NDPHC  generating power plant  Alaoji .

“At the moment, I understand that the plant is not generating any power because of gas related issues, which hopefully, will be sorted out soon.

“Another problem is that the capacity is very low. From what I gathered from the consortium, clearly the capacity can be improved from anywhere between 45 MW to 1,072 MW and that is the essence of the contact that Chrome has here .

“For us ,we will do everything to ensure that such happens .They have given us a timeline that any where between 18 and 24 months the maximum capacity of the plant will be achieved.

“My plea to them is that since  we have virtually solved the power needs of Aba ,the first set of power that will be generated here should be transmitted to Umuahia and distributed through the EEDC ,which is  equally owned by the Chrome Group” the Governor stated.

Governor Otti  said as a step towards assisting the Power project ,the Mayor of Ugwunagbo Council area and the State Commissioner of Works are to liaise and ensure that an access road to the plant is created, adding that with an access road, all materials and equipment which have since been at the Onne port will be easily brought to site.

Chairman of Chrome Group Sir Offor, said  that the idea behind the project is to improve the power supply needs of Nigerians ,noting that the power Outfit as a matter of obligation have to carry along the Abia state authorities as a major stake holder.
