Federal Poly Ado Ekiti Workers Protest over bad Road

By Ayodele Oni

Staff and students of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti on Monday staged a peaceful protest to call the attention of government and relevant authorities to the poor state of the only road that leads to their campus.

As part of measures to show their grievances and press home their demands, the protesters in their large number barricaded the road thus causing heavy traffic congestion which came to stand still for several hours.

The road, which seems to have defied various emergency repairs, also leads to Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, (ABUAD) and the abandoned airport project of the state government.

It used to be a link for Lagos/ Abuja bound travellers due to the short distance but has now been abandoned for other alternative routes.

ABUAD founder, Afe Babalola, (SAN) had in the past took over the repair of the road util the situation seems to have turned worse.

The spate of kidnapping on the route of recent has been on increase due to its deportable state.

In a separate interviews, the Chairman, Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics, Mr. Sunday Akomolafe, Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, (ASUP), Adebayo Daramola and Chairman, Non Academic Staff Union, (NASU) Adebayo Abubakar said the protest became necessary after government turned deaf ear to their plea over the years regarding the road.

According to them, the road has become a death trap alleging that more than five persons have died within this year as a result of accidents occasioned by the poor state of the road.

The staff noted that they have on several occasions contributed personal income to repair the road but its condition was beyond patching but a total reconstruction.

They vowed to continue to barricade the road unless government takes necessary action.

The two wives of Kebbi State Governor, Hajiya Zainab Nasare and Hajiya Nafisa Nasir Idris have distributed grains and cash to 3000 women of the four Local Government Areas in Zuru Emirate, comprising of Zuru, Fakai, Danko/ Wasagu and Sakaba.

In a statement by Yahaya Sarki,

In her speech, Hajiya, Dr. Nafisa Nasir Idris  remarked that the provision of food items and money to the women was aimed at cushioning the effect of the economic situation in the country and bring succour to those observing the Ramadan fast.

Nafisa announced that her foundation would sustain empowerment of women already ongoing in all parts of Kebbi State for self reliance through gainful ventures.

Addressing the gathering, the Kebbi State APC Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Zuru said the ruling government would enhance the welfare of all communities through the provision of the dividends of democracy.

In a welcome address, the Sole administrator of Zuru Local Government, who spoke on behalf of the Sole administrators of the four Local Governments in Zuru Emirate, Alhaji Isa Gajere, commended Governor Nasir Idris for his fatherly care to the people of the Emirate and other sections of the state.

Nollywood popular Actor, Amaechi Muonagor is dead.

He died at home on Sunday, March 24, 2024.

But for lack of funds, perhaps, the story could have been different. He was forced to leave the hospital, a Government-owned Teaching Hospital, where he had been undergoing dialysis, for lack of funds to continue his treatment.

Last week, a video of him made the rounds when another Actor, Kingsley Orji, posted it to solicit for funds to help the now dead Actor to be flown to India for a kidney transplant. He did not say if a matching kidney was ready for him.

Orji who spoke on his Instagram account     disclosed that the deceased  left the hospital due to financial constraints.

Speaking in both Igbo and English Orji said: “It has not been easy. He has been in this condition for months now. He wants to go for a kidney transplant. What we want is for you to help us for him to travel to India.

“He just came back from the ICU in Nnewi Teaching Hospital a couple of days ago. He was responding to treatment but not very well.

“We decided to bring him home because there was no money, but it is not advisable. He barely talks well. Please, he needs your help.”

Muonagor’s passing came  less than three weeks after the demise of another thespian, John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu.

Muonagor was born in Obosi, a village in Idemili North, Anambra State. He attended St. Mary’s Primary School, Obosi, Oraifite Grammar School before he furthered his education at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN,where he studied economics and graduated in 1987.

In 1989 after his Youth Service, he started working for NAN (News Agency of Nigeria). He left his job a few years later for an acting role in his first movie as Akunatakasi in Taboo 1, a Nigerian movie.

He was aged 61 years.

Ekiti: “Aspirants That Can’t Win House Of Assembly Election Now Coming Out On PDP Ticket To Challenge Gov Oyebanji”  – PDP Chieftain

0
Lere Olayinka

By Ayodele Oni

A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, Lere Olayinka, has advised governorship aspirants on the Party’s ticket to stop abusing leaders in the State.

Olayinka cautioned a particular intending Governorship aspirant in the state, Mrs Funmi Ogun, against attacking notable leaders, saying: “it is uncharitable, childish, and will lead to another electoral failure for the particular aspirant.”

Funmi Ogun served as Commissioner for Works during the second term regime of former Governor Ayodele Fayose.

Olayinka, who was the PDP House of Representatives candidate for Ekiti Central Federal Constituency 2 in the 2024 general elections, said Ekiti State has gone past that era of politics of personal attacks, especially on leaders in the State.

In a release on Sunday, Olayinka described a statement by Funmi Ogun, alleging that some godfathers of the state governor, Biodun Oyebanji, were the ones “eating” the State resources, thereby making it impossible for the governor to perform as the height of advertisement of “political nonsensical nonsense.”

While challenging her to be bold enough to mention names of the godfathers, Olayinka said he hoped it was not a reference to Governor Oyebanji’s closeness to his predecessors like Ayo Fayose, Kayode Fayemi, Niyi Adebayo and Segun Oni, as well as other notable leaders in the state like Chief Afe Babalola, Chief Deji Fasuan, Chief Wole Olanipekun and others.

“Is she crucifying the governor for treating leaders in the state with respect? Is buying vehicles for a former governor like Asiwaju Segun Oni and Chief Fasuan, a man who led the struggle for the creation of Ekiti State, an offence for which an aspirant in the embryo will mount the podium and cry blue murder? This, to me is, uncharitable and childish.

“Or the rebellion spirit in her has so matured that she will now accuse Fayose of collecting Ekiti State money from Governor Oyebanji, such that the governor has become incapacitated from delivering good governance? The same Fayose through whom she attained whatever political level that she is now?

“If the reference is to Fayose, then, people like myself will no longer keep silent because we cannot all be clothed with garments betrayer.”

“Most importantly, how does it even sound for someone who played active roles in the construction of the Fajuyi – Ojumose bridge by the Fayose’s government, which I was part of to be condemning the construction of another bridge by the present government?  Is that not self-indictment? Must we talk just for the sake of talking?

“Let me however say this clearly that if she thinks that she can win the PDP governorship ticket, she needs to be told to stop playing because the race is not for the runner.

“And with the level of endorsements being received by the governor, is it someone who was unable to pick PDP tickets for House of Assembly, Deputy Governor and House of Representatives that will confront him?

Kebbi Food Basket Of Nigeria – Peter Obi

By Ayodele Oni

The Labour Party (LP) Presidential Candidate in the 2023 General Elections, Mr Peter Obi, has said that Kebbi State has the capacity to feed the entire nation.

A statement by Ahmed Idris,

Chief Press Secretary to Kebbi State Governor stated that Obi disclosed this when he paid a courtesy visit on Governor Nasir Idris in Government House, Birnin Kebbi on Sunday.

Obi observed that God Almighty has blessed the State with vast land for mass agricultural production, adding that if properly harnessed, the entire nation would have no reason to be hungry.

The LP presidential candidate cited an example with Belgium which has less than 20 per cent land size of Kebbi, but could produce $20 billion worth of agricultural export annually.

He, therefore, advised the State Government to take advantage of the vast land and engage in cultivation of different crops to generate employment, eradicate poverty, tackle inflation and check the incessant insecurity bedeviling the country.

Obi added that Northern Nigeria “is blessed with abundant land, if Government actually invest in agriculture, we can no longer depend on oil. We can comfortably feed ourselves and export it out to other countries.

“By exporting to other countries, we can earn more foreign exchange, thereby force the price of US Dollar down against Naira.”

Responding, Gov. Nasir Idris appreciated Obi for the visit and assured that the State was not unmindful of the opportunities across the State.

The Governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Yakubu Bala-Tafida, assured the visitor that the present administration has invested heavenly in agriculture.

He recalled that the present Government procured fertilizers worth N2.9 billion last rainy season and distributed them free to farmers across the State, which has increased productivity as well as crop yield in the State.

The Governor added: “We have also procured solar powered pumping machines and distributed them at 30 per cent price to farmers across the state with a view to ameliorating fuel cost.

Governor Idris assured that Government would leverage on the vast land opportunity to expand agricultural cultivation for enhanced productivity across the State.

Ijaw National Council Debunks Claim That Its Youth Are Planning To Attack Military Locations In Niger Delta

Benjamin Okaba Prof

By Akinwale Kasali

Contrary reports making the rounds that Ijaw Youths are planning coordinated attacks on Military Facilities and Locations across the Niger Delta Region the Leadership of the Ijaw National Council, INC, says  it’s a complete fallacy.

The planned attack was discovered following an alleged intelligence report directing military formations in the region to be on high alert over the purported plan.

Benjamin Okaba, President of the INC, debunked the speculation, describing it as false and deliberately aimed at tarnishing the image of the Ijaw Nation.

In a Statement on Sunday, Okaba said there was no such plan or any reason or justification that warrants contemplating such devilish plan by the Ijaw Youth Council or any other organization in Ijaw land.

His words, “As the umbrella organisation of Ijaw people worldwide, our attention has been drawn to an orchestrated report aimed at pitching the Federal Government and military against the Ijaw nation.

“We have carried out diligent investigation and found out that the report is not only fake but a figment of the imagination of those who concocted and generated this delicate, devilish and unfortunate idea.

“The region needs peace, tranquility and development now more than ever and we are all united as Ijaw people in condemning the dastardly acts of the criminals who killed the officers and men of the Nigerian Army.

“We, however, wish to reiterate as in our earlier statements on this subject matter that the military should be more professional in fishing out the culprits.

More damages should not be inflicted on the innocent indigenes and that justice be tampered with mercy to the extent of exempting the innocent citizens of the affected communities in their reprisal operations.

“We also wish to use this opportunity to warn and advice members of the political class within and outside the region that they should not take their desperate politics beyond the level of decency.

“The originators of this evil and very dangerous plot are the true enemies of the Ijaw nation.”

Okaba called on all well meaning Nigerians, and particularly, the military authorities, “to disregard this fake and unfounded rumour and treat it as such.”

Tragic Death of University Students: Falana Holds Nasarawa State Officials Responsible, Cites Negligence

0
Femi Falana

By Akinwale Kasali

Human Rights Lawyer and Senior Advocate Of Nigeria, SAN, Femi Falana, has said that the death of the Students of Nasarawa State University in a stampede,  was due to the negligence of the Nasarawa State Government.

Falana described the death of the students as unfortunate, noting that the authorities of the University failed to draw any lesson from the recent stampede which claimed the lives of seven persons during the distribution of 25kg bags of rice in Lagos by the Nigeria Customs Service.

It would be recalled that Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nassarawa State had ordered the distribution of two 7.5 kg bags of rice and N5,000 to each student of the State University at Keffi. But the failure of the Officials to coordinate the process triggered a stampede which led to the death of four students last week.

Falana faulted the failure of the those in charge to properly organize the distribution exercise and the poor University Health Centre which was ill- equipped, and was unable to attend to the injured Students who were transferred to the Federal Medical Center, Keffi, where they lost their lives. Over 17 others were left with varying degrees of injuries arising from suffocation at the venue of the distribution of rice.

In a statement by Falana over the unfortunate incident, he said: “No doubt, the tragedy would have been averted if the University management had distributed the 7 kg bags of rice to the students through their departments.

“Indeed, there was no justification to have assembled thousands of students without a standby ambulance.

“As if that was not enough, the University Health Centre was not equipped to attend to the injured students. Hence, they were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Keffi where two female students were certified dead.”

Falana, however, said, having regard to the facts and circumstances of the tragic incident, the Nassarawa State police command should be directed to investigate the allegations of criminal negligence which led to the unfortunate death of the two students.

He said: “The culprits should be prosecuted without delay. In view of the official statement that hoodlums hijacked the distribution exercise,  the State Government and the University Management are required by law to compensate the bereaved families of the two students.”

OPINION: On Fr. Edeh’s Virginity Thesis

Valentine Obienyem

By Valentine Obienyem

A few days ago, during the 25th anniversary of Madonna University, Fr. Edeh made remarks about virginity in the school. Whenever virginity is mentioned, it immediately brings to mind the gender disparities in our society and the historical exploitation of women. Why is it that virginity is always associated with women in our customs? There is no equivalent term for a virgin man. This aside, the reference to virginity by Fr. Edeh has sparked widespread discussion. What is it about sex and related topics that incite such heated debates? Why should we be concerned if students who entered Madonna as virgins graduate as virgins?

I have previously stated that s*x and its associates rank high in the hierarchy of desires. Once basic needs like food and shelter are met, man spares time and money in pursuit of sexual pleasure. This is a societal problem, affecting both humans and animals. Have you ever seen lions fight to the death over territory? It’s not the territory itself that intrigues the lion, but the prospect of having exclusive access to females.

Modern civilization has exacerbated this problem by irresponsibly stimulating the sexual impulse, leading to increasingly immoral behavior.  Our fathers would have pretended not to hear what Fr. Edeh said. Not any more! Many individuals now see no issue with using their bodies to earn money, and there are few moral restraints  on desire. While our ancestors downplayed this issue, the current generation has magnified it through various forms of stimulation, advertising, emphasis, and display, promoting the dangerous notion that inhibition is harmful, whereas restraint – the control of impulses – is a hallmark of decency.

In the past, many of our mothers married as virgins. Today, however, youths driven by hormones may question why they should restrain their se*ual desires. Instead of valuing purity, they boast about their se*ual conquests and shamefully talk about “ body count.”  Numerous terms have been coined to describe various forms of se*ual deviance.

Fr. Edeh, perhaps owing to his age and vocation as a Catholic priest, belongs to an older school of thought. He understands that unchecked youth, devoid of customs, morals, or laws, may ruin their lives before realizing that s*x, if not restrained, can lead to chaos for both individuals and society. I understand that in his schools, students have limited freedom to leave campus, reducing opportunities for se*ual escapades.  Is it right? This is a subject for another day. With the confidence of someone who has exercised restraint, he made his statement. However, given current societal trends, what he seeks to prevent may still occur in his school without his awareness.

Nevertheless, considering the nature of his school and the constraints in place, Fr. Edeh is justified in making his statement. It’s akin to discussing the Catholic Church, which provides numerous avenues for spiritual growth. Despite this, many fail to take advantage of these opportunities. In the end, should the blame fall on the Church or the faithful?

I stand with Fr. Edeh and find it troubling that many are attempting to discredit his statement. To illustrate the prevailing mindset, Bidemi Edwards came forward to admit that she did not graduate as a virgin, implying that even the most devout societies have their deviants.

Verificationist among us are currently working on Fr. Edeh’s statement.
