Following the disclosure by Senator Sumaila Kawu that each Senator takes home an obscene N21 million monthly, former Vice President,  Atiku Abubakar, has said Kawu may face suspension from the Senate President, Godswill Obot Akpabio.

Kawu revealed that aside the N21 Million monthly allowances, the Senators also receive about N1 Million monthly salary.

Atiku described Kawu’s assertion as courageous. He also expressed the hope that Akpabio will not suspend Kawu like Ningi and Ali Ndume.

In a statement by the Peoples Democratic Party,  PDP, Presidential Candidate in the 2023 Presidential Election, signed by Paul Ibe, his Media Adviser, titled “Akpabio superintends over a NASS that undermines RMFAC in fixing its own humongous salaries/allowances while Nigerians are hungry, poor, insecure”, Atiku said: “Senator Sumaila Kawu has courageously stepped up to assert that his monthly take home is N21 million in allowances apart from about N1 million in salary thus vindicating former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s accusation that it was immorally wrong of the Senator Godswill Akpabio-led NASS to fix own salaries and allowances in contravention of the laws of Nigeria.

“The position of Sen. Sumaila (I do hope that the chopping Sen. Akpabio will not suspend him like Ningi or strip him of his position like Ndume) not only confirms what Obasanjo said, it also puts a lie to the official response of the Senate that it does not fix its own salaries and allowances. In an institution populated with lackeys with no balls to hold the reckless executive to account, Sen. Sumaila’s courageous act is worthy of commendation..

“It is, however, ironic that the NASS which is saddled with the task of making laws for the good governance of Nigeria, is the one that is breaking the law and undermining the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMFAC), which is the commission that is constitutionally empowered to fix salaries and allowances of public officials, including members of the NASS. It is the responsibility of the RMFAC to man up and implement the law as it relates to fixing the salaries and allowances of public officials.

“Akpabio and his “chop(ping)” gang can now see why the hungry and justifiably angry Nigerians took to the streets for 10 days on the #EndBackGovernanceProtest to #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria.

“And for the Dele Alakes of this world, who (have) stepped up the propaganda machinery of the President Bola Tinubu administration: the “Movement” he alluded to were not focused on forcing a change of government, but to sack the hunger in their stomachs caused by the trial-and-error policies of this administration.”

FG Sets Conditions For Zero Percent Duty Rate On Imported Food Items

Effective from Thursday, the Federal Government has approved  zero percent duty rate (0%) and Value Added Tax (VAT) exemption on selected basic food items until 31st December 2024.

The measure is part of Presidential directives aimed at alleviating the hardship faced by Nigerians due to high prices of essential food items.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in a statement, stated that  “His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR through the Honourable Minister of Finance and the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Olawale Edun has approved the regulation for the implementation of a Zero Percent Duty Rate (0%) and Value Added Tax (VAT) exemption on selected basic food items.”

The statement, signed by Abdullahi Maidawa, Public Relations Officer of NCS, added that “This policy is effective from 15th July 2024 and will remain in force until 31st December 2024.

“This measure aims to mitigate the high cost of food items in the Nigerian market by making essential commodities more affordable for citizens.

“The initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to address food security challenges and ensure that basic foodstuffs are accessible to all Nigerians.

“However, it is important to emphasise that while this temporary measure is intended to address current hardships, it does not undermine the long-term strategies put in place to safeguard local Farmers and protect Manufacturers.

“It is pertinent to note that the implementation of this policy will focus on addressing the national supply gap.

“To participate in the zero-duty importation of basic food items, a company must be incorporated in Nigeria and have been operational for at least five years.

“It must have filed annual returns and financial statements and paid taxes and statutory payroll obligations for the past five years.

“Companies importing husked brown rice, grain sorghum, or millet need to own a milling plant with a capacity of at least 100 tons per day, operated for at least four years, and have enough farmland for cultivation.

“Those importing maize, wheat, or beans must be agricultural companies with sufficient farmland or feed mills/agro-processing companies with an out-grower network for cultivation.

“The basic food items eligible for the zero percent duty rate are as follows:

“The Federal Ministry of Finance will periodically provide the NCS with a list of importers and their approved quotas to facilitate the importation of these basic food items within the framework of this policy.

“The policy requires that at least 75% of imported items be sold through recognised commodities exchanges, with all transactions and storage recorded.

“Companies must keep comprehensive records of all related activities, which the government can request for compliance verification.

“If a company fails to meet its obligations under the import authorisation, it will lose all waivers and must pay the applicable VAT, levies, and import duties.

“This penalty also applies if the company exports the imported items in their original or processed form outside Nigeria.

“The Nigeria Customs Service, under the leadership of Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, remains committed to supporting government policies to enhance food security and promote economic stability.

“The Service urges all stakeholders to cooperate fully in implementing this initiative for the benefit of all Nigerians.”

LP Disowns Ebiseni As Ondo Gov. Candidate, Affirms  Olorunfemi

The Labour Party, (LP) in Ondo state has described a defector from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Sola Ebiseni that described himself as governorship candidate of the party as impersonator.

Ebiseni, who lost out in the governorship primary of the PDP, and left the party, had announced his emergence as the flagbearer of LP and picked another defector, Dayo Awude, as his running mate.

But, the leadership of the LP in the state disassociated itself from the arrangement insisting that Ayo Olorunfemi remains its candidate for November poll.

The party in a statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh said that Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi emerged as its flag bearer for the state governorship election after its primaries held in Akure in June.

Olorunfemi pointed out that Ebiseni who contested for the governorship of the opposition People’s Democratic Party in the state but lost, is yet to relinquish his membership of the party, neither has he formally identified with LP.

“Dr. Olorunfemi is the candidate of the Labour Party. He emerged after the governorship primaries witnessed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). His name was subsequently submitted to INEC and was published as the Labour Party’s duly nominated candidate for the Ondo election.

“Chief Ebiseni is not our candidate, though he aspired to be one. INEC has since concluded the nomination processes and one wonders how he emerged without the involvement of the INEC and the sponsorship of the Labour Party.

“We also took note of some persons who are not members of the Labour Party but believed to be working for the Nigeria Labour Congress who must have been urging him on in their blind and illegitimate pursuit of the leadership of the party even when the Appeal Court has affirmed Barrister Julius Abure as the authentic Chairman of the Labour Party.

“Impersonation is a serious crime in Nigeria and we therefore urge the Nigeria Police, the Department of the State Security and all other security agencies to apprehend anyone impersonating or being used to fight a proxy battle by way of impersonation.

“Labour Party is poised to win the Ondo governorship election having fielded a very credible candidate who is a grassroots politician, a prominent Labour leader and a renowned educationist.

“We think that this unholy alliance between Ebiseni and APC-sponsored NLC is geared towards frustrating our expected victory at the polls but we will resist it through every legal means.

“We are therefore calling on our party members in Ondo, particularly Obidient family and the entire electorate to ignore the gang up against the party and come out en-masse to vote for Dr Olorunfemi of the Labour Party, secure our votes and make sure our votes count.”

Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea have signed an agreement on Gulf of Guinea Pipeline project as part of measures to affirm partnership for mutual development.

President Bola Tinubu, who is on three days visit to the country signed on behalf of Nigeria, while Equatorial Guinean President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo signed for his country.

The agreement covered legislative and regulatory measures for the gas pipeline, establishment and operation, transit of natural gas, ownership of the gas pipeline, and general principles.

A statement on Thursday by spokesman for Nigeria’s president, Ajuri Ngalele said President Tinubu, expressed the hope that the signing of the agreement will open up new opportunities for gas exploration and employment.

The President stated that the two leaders had discussed issues related to the creation of employment, food security, multilateral relations, and conflict resolution mechanisms on the continent during a private meeting that preceded the signing of the agreement.

“Concerning Africa, conflicts and conflict resolution were discussed. We discussed various areas of conflicts and what we can do to promote peace.

“We talked about promotion of peace and stability in our countries, and growth and prosperity on our continent.

“In the same way that Europe and America have kept themselves and found a solution for their conflicts, we have to look at both inadequate capital, industrialization efforts, research and development programmes, and enlighten our people, navigate our way through problems.

“Instead of the crisis and conflicts that we see in the Republic of Congo, and others, we have to look inwards to solve problems ourselves,’’ the President said.

President Tinubu said the discussion with the President of Equatorial Guinea also covered challenges of security, African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA), and food security.

“We are all going for it. Within Africa and the African Union, we have resolved that we will work together to make sure that the solution to many of our problems in Africa comes from within,.”

In his remarks, the President of Equatorial Guinea said bilateral relations with Nigeria over many years have been rewarding and emphasized the need to deepen cooperation across salient areas.

President Mbasogo pointed out that Africa’s vision of having a permanent seat in the Security Council of the United Nations is vital for the development of the continent, affirming that Equatorial Guinea will work with Nigeria to realize the objective.

The President of Equatorial Guinea said the signing of the agreement was strategic for Africa’s development.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar of Nigeria, and Mr. Simeon Oyono Esono, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Equatorial Guinea, also signed the agreement.

New Nigeria Movement Says It Is Desirable To Restructure Nigeria Based On Ethnic Nationalities

A new emerging Group, known as New Nigeria Movement, has advocated for restructuring of Nigeria based on ethnic nationalities and groupings.

The Group made up of representatives from all ethnic groups in Nigeria, pointed out that the suggestion was based on the study of the report of the national Confab held during ex President Good luck Jonathan’s regime.

It explained that “In this experiment, what we are sermonizing and implementing is the modifications of the boundaries of each nationality or grouped nationalities  into a regional geographical expression.

“The consummation of all the arrangements will now lead to the harmonious delineation of the country into compatible regions under a new constitutional direction for true federalism spelling the regional system of government.

The secretary general Council of Yoruba Elders, Dr. Victor Taiwo, listed the benefits of the arrangement to include “that each region will be orientated to gather its eggheads to look inward and exhume the elements of economic viability in their soil, water, environment and their brains to serve as the region’s economic mainstay.

“By the time these elite double-task their brains, they would discover that God has planted in each land the resources enough to sustain it without having any recourse to the oil from the Niger- Delta – the oil in the Niger-Delta being the bane of Nigeria and a curse for her competitive development.

“With this architecture emplaced, these harmoniously constituted regions will newly agree to form a union of regions federating into a national entity whereby each people can say, ‘We are one people with one destiny.’

“And they shall jointly agree to service the centre as against the centre repugnantly servicing all the states and local governments from one single economic mainstay of the fast thinning oil value.

“With all these arrangements emplaced, the region that wishes to fly like eagle or move at rocket speed will have nothing clogging it down.

“The region that wants to engage in majestical exhibition by scuffing at snail-speed is free for its pace without any inhibition or  interference.”

On the just ended 10 days  nationwide protest, the Group stated that “What the organizers and the people expect from the protests is an immediate change in the metamorphosis of the bad governance to a good one, yes with immediate effect.

“But the bitter truth of the matter is found in a maxim which says, nobody can give what he does not have.

“Sorry to say that it is not only President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that literally has no clue in the slightest streak to the problems of this country, the leadership of this organization has repeatedly made the emphasis in its countless prophetic broadcasts that let all the angels descend from heaven, they cannot fix Nigeria again.

“So looking for solutions from this government is akin to searching for the horse’s horns which do not exist or waiting beside the brook for the crab to blink its eyes. The wait will be eternal.”

On the way out, it suggested “peaceful dissolution of the country into compatible sovereign units and setting sail on the restructuring of the country without further procrastination.”

INCLUDE Tells Nigerian Leaders To Bridge Energy Poverty Gap

A Dutch-Africa platform based in the Netherlands, INCLUDE has released findings on the challenges faced by youth and women in Nigeria’s renewable energy sector, highlighting obstacles to employment opportunities. The platform offers actionable strategies to address these barriers, fostering a more inclusive and equitable renewable energy workforce.

The platform recently hosted a virtual symposium, titled “Decent Jobs for Youth and Women in Nigeria’s Low-Carbon Transition,” in collaboration with the House of Representatives Committee on Renewable Energy, chaired by Hon. Afam Victor Ogene.

According to its Executive Director, Anika Altaf, INCLUDE promotes and facilitates evidence-based policymaking on inclusive development, with a focus on Africa. “We do this through our three pillars: Research, Knowledge Exchange, and Policy Dialogues.”

In his opening remarks, Hon. Ogene, said that the House of Representatives Committee on Renewable Energy was delighted to acknowledge the significant impact its collaboration with INCLUDE. “Our joint efforts, particularly through inclusive policy dialogues, have prioritized the needs of the people, who are the bedrock of democracy, essentially, as regards access to clean energy in the rural areas. Our partnership with INCLUDE has substantially enhanced the Committee’s core objectives, which include developing policies and initiatives to promote investment in renewable energy technologies in Nigeria.

“One of the notable achievements of our collaboration with INCLUDE is the forthcoming, first ever, National Conference on Renewable Energy in Nigeria. This landmark event aims to convene key stakeholders in the Nigerian and international renewable energy sectors for a fruitful dialogue on policy and sustainable development in the industry.”

The lead researcher for INCLUDE, Victoria Manya, in her presentation many stakeholders at the event described as brilliant, highlighted the challenges faced by youths and women in accessing employment in the renewable energy sector to include, “Lack of Labor-Based Incentives, Exclusion from Decision-Making, replication of energy poverty, barriers to entrepreneurship, need for improved data and awareness.

She also highlighted the “Impact on Informal Sector Jobs: The shift to renewable energy poses risks to jobs in the informal sector, such as charcoal production, without providing clear pathways for transitioning these roles into the formal economy.”

The research concluded that “For Nigeria’s low-carbon transition to be truly inclusive, it must prioritize labor-based incentives and involve marginalized groups in policy formulation. This approach will not only bridge the energy poverty gap but also ensure that the benefits of the transition are widely shared across all segments of society.”

Some of the takeaways from the well attended symposium, included the following recommendations:

“Strategic Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration: The symposium reinforced the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration, particularly between lawmakers and technical experts. This partnership is vital for crafting policies that are not only comprehensive and informed but also capable of addressing the intricate challenges of a labor-driven low-carbon economy.

“Data-Driven Socioeconomic Strategies: Accurate data collection and analysis were identified as key to developing and implementing effective labor-based incentives. High-quality data is essential to inform policy decisions, measure socioeconomic impact, and ensure that the transition to a low-carbon economy is inclusive and equitable

“Entrepreneurship and Empowerment: The discussions emphasized the role of entrepreneurship in driving the transition, particularly for youth and women. By embedding labor incentives within the entrepreneurial ecosystem, we can stimulate innovation, foster economic resilience, and ensure that the transition supports sustainable livelihoods.”

“Bridging the Energy Poverty Gap through Public Awareness and Stakeholder Engagement: One of the most significant opportunities highlighted during the symposium was the potential to bridge the energy poverty gap through a labor-focused transition to renewable energy. This approach is not just about providing access to cleaner energy but also about creating socio-economic benefits that uplift marginalized communities. Raising awareness about the transformative potential of renewable energy is essential. By educating citizens—particularly those in marginalized and underserved areas—about the socio-economic opportunities that a labor-focused transition can offer, we can empower these communities to actively participate in the renewable energy sector. This participation is crucial for ensuring that the benefits of the transition are equitably distributed, leading to widespread engagement and reducing energy poverty.”

The symposium brought together a diverse group of attendees, comprising members of the House Committee on Renewable Energy, Climate Change, and Youth Development Affairs, alongside various stakeholders and experts from the renewable energy sector.

Hunger/ Hardship: Kumuyi Sues For Dialogue With Govt

The General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, William Kumuyi, has appealed to Nigerians to shun violence, saying dialogue with the authority is the best way to achieve economic growth and development.

The respected Man of God, MOG, made the remark on Wednesday during an interractive meeting with journalists in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

His call followed the recent 10-day hunger protests in the country which led to the shut down of major cities, by majorly youths protesting under the #endbadgovernance protests.

The protesters, the magazine reported, had demanded solutions to the current economic hardship imposed by the Bola Tinubu administration due to the removal of fuel subsidy and the convergence of the foreign exchange market.

Speaking yesterday, Kumuyi said dialogue should be priotised with the authority rather than violence, adding that the cooperation of all Nigerians is required to achieve the desired change.

“All hands must be on deck to effect needed changes, otherwise, the society will continue to suffer,” Kumuyi said, adding that Nigerians must “carry the change to our offices and everywhere.”

Kumuyi who is in the state to organise a six-day programme, tagged, “Driving positive change and social impact”, said the event will lead to positive change in the lives of Nigerians irrespective of the religion, creed, or ethnicity.

The MOG said, “The aim is to accomplish positive change in the lives of Nigerians, irrespective of their backgrounds, to make them effect desired social and spiritual transformation. Nigeria’s well documented social, economic and moral problems are impacting all aspects of the country. The stark reality of the situation is that all hands must be on deck to effect needed changes, otherwise, the society will continue to suffer.

“We see that every individual, every family and every institution can do better and if we all do better in various areas, relationships, interaction at our workplaces, our colleges, everywhere, there will be a change in the nation and it doesn’t take mighty efforts.

“Little drops of water make a mighty ocean and, if we can begin the change here as individuals, as families, then carry the change to our offices and everywhere, all that we are mourning and groaning about will turn around for the better,” Mr Kumuyi said.

He  added, “When we say that there should be a change, there could be different methods of bringing up the change. The young and older people, even the government, may have different views, but we must agree to a positive change. If we can harness all efforts and energy together, not trying to defeat or crush anyone, the youth, government and everyone knowing that we all have the rights constitutionally to bring a change, we all must strategise at a roundtable to have direction to follow and achieve positive change.

“I also think that when we love one another and respect and honour one another, we’ll be able to sit down without any kind of grievances or retaliation or destroying anything, all we want is a better country and we will have it. I might have to change my attitude, I might have to change my mindset, I might have to change a lot of things and when those changes come together they change a person, they change his interaction, relationships.
“And when those changes are made, we see a national change, we see a community change and we go ahead to see global change. Just like the ripple effect, when each of our lights shine, it makes us see more light. What we see will also lead to what we do and what we do will also bring the change, it’s a kind of chain reaction.’

Meanwhile, the organisers of the hunger protest have vowed to resume in October if their demand for a better country was not met by the government.

Oyo, FCMB Lift Youth Agri-Buss With N1.5bn

The Seyi Makinde -led government in has earmarked N500 million to support beneficiaries of the Youth Entrepreneurship in Agribusiness Project.

The youth empowerment programme totaling N1.5 billion is in conjunction with Nigeria’s leading  commercial bank, First City Monument Bank, FCMB, the state government said.

According to checks by the magazine, YEAP, an initiative of the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency, OSADA, has so far trained 3,300 participants.

The state Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal made the announcement on Tuesday after the state executive council meeting, SEC, in Ibadan, the state capital.

Lawal said the initiative by the state government is part of the state’s Sustainable Actions for Economic Recovery programme, YEAP.

A statement shared on the state official X handle on Thursday,  said the fund will encourage youth enterperneurship, aside from driving economic growth and recovery in the Pacesetters state.

The state government stated that the initiative is aimed at ameliorating the sufferings imposed by the removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government.

“The Oyo State Executive Council (ExCo) met today and approved the sum of N500 million as enterprise support to Youth Entrepreneurship in Agribusiness Project (YEAP) beneficiaries,’ Lawal said.

“The N500 million was approved for YEAP beneficiaries under the Sustainable Actions for Economic Recovery (SAfER) programme.

“The support is being provided in collaboration with First City Monument Bank (FCMB), which will be providing an additional N1 billion, making a total of N1.5 billion.

“Acting Governor, Barr. Abdulraheem @BayoLawal, presided over the ExCo meeting,” the Deputy Governor said.

Recall that the state government had in February, disclosed that it would disburse over N340 million to crop farmers as part of the SAfER initiative, afterr it had earlier disbursed over N416 million, with a total of N1 billion allocated to assist farmers in the state.

IPOB: 5 Nordic Countries Working On Ekpa’s Repatriation To Nigeria

The diplomatic efforts by the Nigerian government to repatriate Simon Ekpa, one of the seccesionist  leaders of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB has received a boost from the Nordic countries.

On Wednesday, the five Nordic countries made up of Finland, Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Norway gave their support to the federal government to ensure that Ekpa face justice.

The magazine reports that the federal government has solicited the support of Finland for the repatriation of Ekpa to face justice on terrorism related allegations, even though he has not been officially charged for the alleged crimes.

The five countries made the commitment in a meeting with Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar yesterday in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Leading the five countries to the meeting with the federal government, the Finnish government said legal proceedings involving Simon Ekpa will be concluded soon, to determine whether he will be sent back to Nigeria to face the law.

Elina Valtonen, the Finland Foreign Minister who spoke during the meeting with Tuggar disclosed that Ekpa’s case was being handled through Finland’s judicial system, which operates strictly by the rule of law.

She stated that the case will be handled basically on the rule of law without any political undertone.

Valtoren said, “If you are referring to a specific person (Ekpa) operating in Finland in a less than constructive manner, we have discussed this with the Nigerian authorities.

“Both our judicial systems are collaborating on this matter, and we hope it will soon be resolved.

“Both governments have stressed that the case is not a political issue but rather a judicial one, reaffirming their commitment to upholding the law as the proceedings unfold.”

Following the detention of Nnamdi Kanu by the federal government, IPOB has become even more deadly under Ekpa, who has vowed to ensure that the south is severed from Nigeria through violent means.

Under his leadership, IPOB through its enforcement arm, the Eastern Nigeria Security Network,  ESN has launched ferocious attack against Nigeria’s security forces leading to the death of many soldiers and policemen in the south east region.

Amidst calls for his repatriation by not a few Nigerians, to face justice in Nigeria Ekpa has vowed to shut down the region if his demands are not met.

Meanwhile, Ekpa said on his X handle on Tuesday that the next Stay At Home order in the south east will last for one month, during which compliance will be strictly enforced.

They have also been charged to rededicate themselves to the task of  maintaining peace and order as well as  fighting crimes in the State.

Kano State Police Commissioner, CP Salman Dogo Garba, who made  the appeal, spoke  during the official decorations of the personnel with their new ranks.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, by the Kano Police Command spokesperson, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, SP, the Kano State Police Chief informed that the personnel who were decorated on Tuesday, August 13, were part of the promoted officials by the Police Service Commission, PSC on July 29, 2024 .

The personnel were promoted from the ranks of Inspectors ,to that of   Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP II.

CP Garba, while congratulating the police personnel, also emphasized that their promotion, are in recognition of their commitment, professionalism and unblemished records.

He urged them to always justify the trust and confidence reposed  in them by the system by always insisting on strict adherence to professional demands.

Similarly, the Kano CP  has  lauded the Command’s Operatives for their efforts towards securing lives and properties, even in the face of the recent security challenges being experience in the State.

While addressing Senior and Supervising police  personnel during  a lecture series, Garba  harped on the need to ensure the maintenance of peace and security in the Commercial, but volatile State.
