By Ayodele Oni

The Minister of Interior, Tunji-Ojo, has clarified that he has no pact with President Bola Tinubu as regards the November Governorship election in Ondo state.

Tunji-Ojo explained in a statement on Wednesday by his media aide,  A. Babatunde, that there was no time  he was appointed by the President as  APC, Ondo State Leader.

The statement reads “It has come to our attention that a news article circulating  titled ‘Tinubu appoints interior minister political leader in Ondo,’ claiming that the Minister of Interior, Hon. (Dr) Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has been appointed as the political leader in Ondo state by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“We would like to categorically state that this report is entirely baseless and fictitious.

“The Minister of Interior, Hon. Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, completely disassociates and distances himself from the purported appointment, as it holds no truth whatsoever.

“There has been no meeting held with all the local government APC chairmen and leaders in Abuja, as alleged in the article.

“While the Minister is aware that the party’s governorship primary election is days away, he has advised aspirants to embrace the spirit of love and sportsmanship.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), as the father of the nation and as the leader of the party, is a democrat whose interest is always to promote unity and peace and would not be involved in any action that will undermine that.

“We urge the public to disregard the misinformation contained in the viral news article and to always rely on credible sources for accurate information.”

Betta Edu Sues BBC

By Akinwale Kasali

Betta Edu, suspended Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, has file a lawsuit against the British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC, for allegedly defaming her personality.

The embattled Edu had been in the eye of the storm over allegations bothering on fraud, mismanagement, corruption and abuse of office. She has sent a letter to the BBC office in Abuja, the Nation’s  Capital, and its London office, United Kingdom, by her Counsel, Chikaosolu Ojukwu , a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

According to the letter, the suspended minister said that the BBC reported that N30 billion was retrieved from her in the ongoing probe by the anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The lawyer alleged that the publication which he described as false had dented the reputation of his client, Edu.

Ojukwu asked BBC to retract the article and tender a public apology to Edu over the matter within 48 hours, saying that, “Our client has suffered immeasurable reputational damage, psychological trauma and anguish as a direct consequence of the publication and dissemination of the article,” the letter read.

Edu is also demanding 50 million US Dollars from the UK-based media organisation as compensation, and threatened to take legal action against BBC.

The letter reads; “ We represent Dr. Betta Edu, the Hon. Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation of Nigeria (hereinafter referred to as “our client”) and we have her express instructions to write you in the terms thereunder.

“ We write to express our deep concern regarding the recent article published by the BBC on its website: www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-Africa (Last accessed on 9th April 2024 at 17:40 GMT) titled: “Betta Edu Probe: Nigeria Recover $24m in Poverty Minister Investigation- EFCC” with the byline “Nigeria Has Recovered 30bn Naira ($24m; £19m) as Part of an Ongoing Corruption probe Into a Suspended Minister, the Financial Watchdog Says.

“The aforesaid article, which presents information purporting to relate to an ongoing corruption probe into the activities of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in Nigeria, is replete with innuendoes and insinuations which suggest that N30bn has been recovered in the course of the ongoing investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from our client and that the 50 bank accounts connected with the recovered sums are linked to our client.

“Furthermore, your article proceeds to cast aspersion on our client by referencing her earlier suspension (to allow for unfettered investigations) in the following terms: “Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Minister Betta Edu was initially suspended in January over the alleged diversion of $640,000 of public money into a personal bank account.

“First and foremost, the language used in describing our client’s purported involvement in the alleged corruption case suggests guilt without allowing for the presumption of innocence, which is fundamental in any fair and unbiased reporting.

“The reckless manner in which the article was crafted, without providing our client with the opportunity to respond to the allegations before its wide publication, is a clear breach of journalistic fairness and due process and demonstrates a complete disregard for journalistic integrity and professionalism.

“The headline, content, and tone of the article imply guilt on the part of our client, without any concrete evidence to substantiate such claims. This is a blatant attempt to tarnish our client’s reputation and undermine her credibility which she has earned over the course of her distinguished career in both private and public life.

“For the avoidance of doubt, our client has neither been indicted nor found culpable of any act of financial impropriety in relation to her stewardship of the Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Ministry in Nigeria. It is also pertinent to emphasize that neither N30 billion nor any amount whatsoever has been traced to or recovered from our client’s bank accounts nor has any proceed of crime been traced or recovered from her to warrant the scurrilous article under reference.

“Suffice it to say that in the aftermath of the publication of this scandalous article (which the BBC caused to be disseminated to millions of persons across the globe), our client has been inundated by calls and messages from friends, associates expressing their shock and consternation. Our client has suffered immeasurable reputational damage, psychological trauma and anguish as a direct consequence of the publication and dissemination of the article.”

PDP Chieftain, Sowunmi Slams Jonathan, Obasanjo Staying Aloof As Party Bleeds

Segun Sowunmi

By Akinwale Kasali

Disturbed by what he termed the carefree attitude of former Presidents,  Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, continue to enmesh in crisis and  bleeds, Segun Sowunmi, one the Party’s Chieftains has expressed his disappointment at both former Presidents.

Speaking on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, Sowunmi said he expected Obasanjo and Jonathan to step in and resolve the protracted conflict that has plagued the party before the 2023 elections.

It would be recalled that Ikenga Ugochinyere and some members of the House of Representatives, comprising about “60 lawmakers,” had questioned the party leadership’s silence on the political developments in Rivers State, particularly criticizing their inaction while President Bola Tinubu intervened.

The Lawmakers had also demanded for the resignation of Acting National Chairman of the Party, Illiya Damagum, leading to crisis in the Party.

Sowunmi attributed the agitation for Damagum’s resignation and other internal discord within the party leadership to what he referred to as the “Wike problem.”

The ex-Ogun PDP Governorship aspirant lamented that the PDP had previously dealt with the challenges posed by the then Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, before the last general elections, yet similar issues persist even a year after the polls.

Expressing regret, the PDP stalwart noted that the internal conflicts within the party have endured beyond the 2023 Presidential election.

Sowunmi emphasized that it’s crucial for the founding fathers of the party to intervene and facilitate reconciliation among conflicting party members to strengthen and solidify the achievements of the party.

“A 25-year-old institution is supposed to be one of the legacies that one of the most populous black nations will tell the world that we can also run this thing,” he said.

“I’m disappointed that the founding fathers, the Jonathans of this world, the Obasanjos of this world and co, I am disappointed that they are looking at the platform that gave them the opportunity to lead, I am disappointed that they are looking it bleed.”

Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road: Why Lagos Will Not Compensate Property Owners

0

The Lagos state government says only property owners with planning approvals will be compensated by the state government for demolition in the construction of the Lagos-calabar coastal road.

The state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Olumide Oluyinka, made this known at the Association of the Real Estate Agents in Nigeria summit held on Tuesday.

The project is the brain child of the federal government, which recently approved over N1 trillion for the take-off of its first phase.

According to checks by the magazine, the projects will affect many property owners whose properties are likely to be demolished to pave the way for the coastal road expected to cover 10 states, according to Dave Umahi, the Minister of Works.

Not a few property owners on the route have protested that their livelihood is likely to be destroyed as a result of what many have described as a very ambitious project.

For instance, Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president said in a statement earlier in the week that many sources of livelihood would be ruined due to the construction of the coastal highway.

The former vice president complained of the huge financial cost of the 700 kilometre long project to Nigerians, adding that the coastal highway “ is expected to lead to job losses like the demolition of Landmark Beach Resort in Oniru which will lead to the loss of over 12,000 direct and indirect jobs and over $200m in investments according to its management.”

The state government has now added salt to the injury of property owners whose properties will be demolished as a result of the construction of the project.

According to the commissioner, property owners with valid document to built will be compensated by the state government.

Oluyinka said, “We are clearing the coastal road, and some houses would be affected, if you do not have planning permit approval, you cannot be compensated.

“All the properties to be demolished are all the properties on the road way, because they have been duly informed.

“The owner of properties with title would be compensated, but owners of properties without any approval, it is a pity, they will not be compensated.”

Kano: Gandollar Faces Judge Next Week

The immediate past governor of the state, Abdullahi Ganduje will be arraigned before the state high court on April 17 on allegation bordering on bribery.

Former governor Ganduje will be docked alongside his wife, and son for alleged corruption during his administration that ended last May.

Others to be arraigned with the former governor include five officials of his government, who have been indicted by the state government on alleged bribery to the tune of $413,000 and N1.38 billion.

The magazine reports that the state government vowed to prosecute the bribery allegation to the end, after a high court in the state ruled that the Kano Public Compliant and Anti-Corruption Commission lacks the power to investigate the former governor.

Justice Abdullahi Liman, who delivered the judgement in Ganduje’s favour said the allegation is a federal offence that cannot be prosecuted by the state agency.

According to a summon made available to journalists, the state government said the former governor and his co-accused will be arraigned at 9 am before Justice Usman Na’aba on April 17.

One of the charges read, that “You, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, sometime between the period of January 10, 2016 or thereabouts, at Kano in the Kano Judicial Division, while serving as the Governor of Kano State and being a public servant in the government of Kano State corruptly asked for and received the sum of $200,000  being benefit for yourself from one of the beneficiaries of contracts awarded by the Kano State Government on your instruction and approval as part of your function as the Governor of Kano State, thereby committed the offence of official corruption, contrary to and punishable under Section 22 of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Commission Law 2008 (as amended), Law No 2 of 2009, Laws of Kano State of Nigeria.”

Already, the state government said it has lined up no fewer than 15 witnesses against the former state helmsman, now the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Meanwhile, the embattled former governor has described his prosecution as an ‘afterthought” by the state government.

His remark is contained in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Enlightenment, Chief Oliver Okpala, who said the state resources are being wasted unnecessarily by the Governor Yusuf Abba administration to prosecute him.

OPINION: The Ambitious Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway

0
Abraham Amah

By Abraham Amah

The commencement of work at the Lagos end of the 700 km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway which runs through nine coastal routes/states without the usual fanfare of exorbitant flags offs associated with major infrastructure projects in Nigeria represents a new bold step by the President Tinubu administration to talk less and do more in its desire to bequeath Nigeria with the critical infrastructure needed to drive the economy to the next level and push it into the fold of the world’s emerging economies.

The ten-lane highway which runs from Lagos through the Lekki Deep Seaport, Ondo, Ogun, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and terminates at Cross Rivers State has a rail line in the middle, making it a dual purpose facility that reinforces the functionality of two components in the same sector to provide a seamless transport network that promotes resource and management sharing-opportunities for excellent service delivery.

A few days after the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi announced to Nigerians that the Federal Executive Council, FEC had approved N1.06tr for the first phase of the project which covers 47.47km within the Lagos axis from the edge of the Eko Atlantic City to the Lekki Deep Seaport, he visited the site and this time, told Nigerians that the road contractor, Hitech Nigeria Ltd. had already sand filled about 1.3km distance in just a few days, a proof of their speedy engagement to deliver the massive project within schedule. In Nigeria, we call it walking the talk.

For those who do not understand it, the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway was conceived by the Goodluck Jonathan administration in 2014 but could not take off until he left office in 2015 and remained frozen in the drawers for the eight years that President Buhari was in government, with ocassional announcements of its commencement which never really happened. Initially conceived as a Public-Private Partnership, PPP in a Build-Operate and Transfer fashion, work was stalled due to the inability of the private participant to raise the needed funds for take off. Currently financed by the federal government, it is encouraging to note that the federal government is also looking to the African Development Bank, AfDB to step in and provide the funds required for the speedy completion of the road project.

This is the first time a road project of this magnitude that impacts the economy in very many positive ways is being undertaken in Nigeria. For one it connects about eight states seamlessly and provides trade opportunities not only for the States where it crisscrosses but also the adjoining States and has the capacity to build multi-regional trade routes that intersperse the entire country. Beyond that, creating massive employment opportunities during the work period and thereafter and linking other sectors creatively, including the nascent blue economy with its vast opportunities for local and foreign investors makes the project worthwhile, timely and cheery.

With the capacity to stimulate demands for raw materials, equipment and services from the areas within its coverage, it also has the potential to drive a sub-continental market reach from both the West and Central African sub-regions and position Nigeria as a regional trade route that straddles both regions. Its capacity to attract housing and urban development along the corridors of the benefitting States is a huge economic potential that would certainly create a boom in the sector and help to decongest some of the cities along the route that are in dire need of renewal. Indeed, its potential to midwife a new economic vista for Nigeria and two sub-regions is endless.

In all of its finest provisions when completed and measured with our contemporaries in the African continent and worldwide, the project did not come early enough to have given Nigeria the headstart it required as a regional power to promote integration and project the hope it gave Africa at independence. However, since no time is wrong to do the right thing, we will take solace in the courage of President Tinubu to set the ball rolling in working to develop the super infrastructure Nigeria requires to operate as a 21st-century-compliant nation in economic matters.

On the flip side and without sounding pessimistic, shouldn’t our recent history of infrastructure abandonment make us wary of this project so that we can lower our expectations and be disappointed at the level we can accommodate? Does it not bother Nigerians that the 127 km Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, that passes through Lagos, Ogun and Oyo States has been under construction and reconstruction for the past 25 years of five different administrations from Olusegun Obasanjo through Yar’Adua, Jonathan to Buhari and Tinubu, yet it remains uncompleted?

Would it be wrong for anyone to recoil in shock when one remembers that the 338 km East-West road from Warri in Delta State through Bayelsa, Rivers and terminates at Oron and Eket in Akwa Ibom State that is the smaller version of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway remains dilapidated and work in progress for as long as history can remember, particularly the Eleme-Onne axis that houses two refineries and a petrochemical company and more than 200 oil and gas companies including the Onne Port from where the Nigeria Customs Service and others generate an average of N1.3 trillion naira annually?

Relying on the recklessness with which we have abandoned road and other massive infrastructural projects in Nigeria, the concerns shared by many in the days after the news of the commencement of the Calabar coastal road should be well taken and carefully interrogated, especially as it concerns the issues of transparency and conflict of interests in the said project. Last week, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar raised concerns about the contract valuation which up till today remains opaque as the federal government has not been able to tell the total estimated cost of the project and the inconsistencies surrounding the designation of the project first as a PPP and later the involvement of the Federal Government as sole financier without the award of the contract passing through the due process of bidding as required by the extant Procurement Act of the country.

While these concerns may appear as a distraction, given the ability of the federal government to explain away those inconsistencies with officialdom, we must also understand that ignoring such probing details lie at the root of many of the projects that have been abandoned in the past because the original contract was not conducted using international best practices which made it easy for the contractors to elope without sanction. We have a litany of huge infrastructure projects, notably the Ajaokuta Steel Complex, Aladja Steel Mill, the Mambilla Hydro power plant, the Brass Liquified Natural Gas project, and many others which were designed to leapfrog the Nigerian economy to the next level but ended up sapping national resources that could have profited the people if proper evaluation and project continuity were followed.

The issue of demolition of properties along the designated route is also a matter of concern as seen in the planned demolition of the Landmark Beach Resort, a $200m venture that offers employment to hundreds of people and pays taxes to the federal and Lagos state governments. It is imperative for the project managers to be constructive in determining which projects serve the public interest and the ones that stand in the way of public progress, to the extent that projects that impact the economy positively in its overriding interest are not destroyed to make way for a road that could be redirected.

All taken together, the quick resolution of cogent concerns raised by stakeholders and visible efforts made by the federal government to ensure a conscious execution of the coastal highway from end to end without political interference would be reassuring and serve to dispel fears in some quarters that the project is meant to start and end with the 47.47 km distance within Lagos, especially as some have also questioned why the project did not start from the Calabar axis. The successful completion of this singular project would spur the erection of other complementary critical infrastructure that would reset the trajectory of Nigeria’s economy for future growth.

The only way President Bola Tinubu can humble naysayers and force history to be kind to him in its judgement as far as critical infrastructure is concerned in Nigeria, is to muster the courage to complete this project within the estimated duration of three years, and by so doing lift the veil that has covered Nigeria’s quest for super infrastructure to drive the economy and make it as buoyant as it should be. The project should not go the way of others so that it can sustain the Renewed Hope, even in the midst of despair.

Abraham Amah writes from Lagos
