Kano: “Deposed Emir Bayero, Not Sanusi, Remains Emir Of Kano” – Security Agencies

Abba Kabir Yusuf and Aminu Bayero and Sanusi Lamido Sanusi

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

In the eyes of the law, the recently deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero remains the Emir of Kano.

That is the position of Security Agencies in Kano which leaderships have warned that they are obeying, and will obey, to the last letter, the ruling of the Federal High Court Kano, which stopped the return of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the deposed 14th Emir of Kano, as the 16th Emir.

Kano State Governor,  Abba Kabir Yusuf, had on Thursday, based on a decision by the Kano State House of Assembly which repealed the law which balkanised the ancient Kano Emirate into five, and appointed five Emirs, all in the First Class Category. Sanusi, who was the Emir of Kano at the time, was later deposed and Ado Bayero installed in his place by the then Governor Abdullahi Ganduje Administration.

But on Thursday, that was scrapped by the Assembly, endorsed by the Governor, who subsequently reappointed and reinstalled Sanusi as Emir.

However hours after that, a Federal High Court in Kano, presided over by the Honourable Justice Liman, granted an exparte motion brought before it, which restrained Sanusi from returning to office. The Court ordered that the status quo be maintained pending June 3 when the suit will be heard.

But Governor Yusuf disobeyed the order and installed Sanusi as the 16th Emir, alleging that Liman granted the order from outside the shores of Nigeria. He threatened to report the Judge to the NJC  for disciplinary action.

Saturday morning, the Governor went a step further  by ordering the arrest of Ado Bayero for, allegedly, threatening the peace of the State by returning to Kano and taking residence in one of the Palaces.

But Bayero seems to be sure-footed and enjoying the support of Security Agencies which insist on obeying the Court order.

On Saturday, the State Police Commissioner in a Joint Security Press Briefing on behalf of his colleagues in  sister Agencies, including the Military and DSS, made it clear that they are sticking to the Court order, and would deal with anybody, no matter how high, threatening the peace of the State.

The bottomline is that for now, they have not recognised Sanusi as the Emir unless a competent Court says so.

Following, the full text of the Joint Press Statement.

For, allegedly, threatening the peace of the State, the Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has ordered the immediate arrest of the recently deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero.

The former Emir was removed from office Thursday, along with four other Emirs by the Governor.

The Governor, also, scrapped four Emirates, collapsed them into Kano Emirate, as it was before former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje created them. He went ahead to reappoint and reinstate Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the 14th Emir of Kano, who was deposed by Ganduje in 2020, as the 17th Emir. He gave the deposed five Emirs 48 hours to vacate their official Palaces and residences.

The former Emir Ado Bayero, it is alleged, was smuggled into Kano city Friday night in an attempt to forcefully return to the Palace two days after being deposed by the Governor.

A statement issued by Mr. Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the spokesperson to the Governor, confirmed that the new Emir, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, arrived at the Palace in the company of the Governor, the Deputy Governor, the Speaker of the State Assembly, and other top government functionaries at about 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, 25th May 2024.

“As the Chief Security Officer of the State, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has directed the Commissioner of Police to arrest the deposed Emir with immediate effect for disturbing public peace and attempting to destroy the relative peace the state enjoys.”

For now, there is, at once, tension and peace of the graveyard in Kano.

Media Freedom: FG Will Not “Rationalise’ Justice For journalists -Fagbemi

0

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi has reacted to the recent arrest of journalists in the country.

No fewer than five journalists have been arrested by the police over one allegation or the other in the last few months.

Some journalists that have been arrested by the police include Segun Olatunji, a former editor of FirstNews, who was abducted in Lagos, Daniel Ojukwu, a journalist with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism, Jamil Mabai, a freelance journalist, and Madu Onuorah, publisher and editor-in-chief of Globalupfront Newspaper arrested by the Enugu state government.

Some of them are still being held by the police across the country.

The development has raised serious posers on the intimidation of journalists by the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration, and the protection of their rights as guaranteed by the constitution.

Some have even accused the administration pointedly of trying to silent the media using the police as a tool to intimidate them.

Speaking on the abduction of journalists on Friday, Fagbemi said no person will be held against the law.

He said the federal government will not bend the law regardless of who is concerned. “You don’t rationalise justice, you dispense it. If people deserve to be released, you release them,” the minister said.

The Katsina State Governor, Umar Dikko  Radda, has called for an all inclusive governance in the political space. He noted that the neglect of a larger proportion of the people in the provision of basic amenities and necessities of life has remained the root cause of insecurity and restlessness in the society.

Governor Radda regretted that from the colonial years, military administrations, to the present democratic dispensation, there have been a large ungoverned space in the country; a situation he said has also made the ungoverned spaces to be breeding grounds for bandits, kidnappers and other criminal elements in the society.

“There are vast territories across the country where the Government’s influence is minimal . These people live on subsistence basis and lack access to socio-economic development. These spaces breed criminality and provide safe havens for criminals in Nigeria.

“It may explain how and why  terrorists and bandits can kidnap hundreds of school children at a time and keep them hidden despite the tools and technology available to security agents

“Reducing ungoverned space will be key to intelligence gathering ,rapid response efforts and community inclusion in the fight against insecurity in Nigeria ” he stated.

Governor Radda also called for socio-economic development as a crucial factor in the efforts to halt insecurity. He canvassed investment in communities, education and skill acquisition among the youth as some of the measures that can  help address the festering problem of insecurity.

Lateef Fagbemi and Nnamdi Kanu

By Ayodele Oni

The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has said only the Court can order the release of detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biäfrä, (IPÕB) Nnamdi Känu.

The AGF explained that the offence of the detained leader of the IPÕB is a difficult one and can only be resolved by competent court of law.

The Minister said on Friday in Abuja that since the mater was already in court, it should be left for the law to have its way.

Fagbemi stated this while responding to questions at the Sectoral Ministerial Briefing on the first anniversary of the President Bola Tinubu administration.

The AGF pointed out that there is a remarkable difference between Kanu’s case and that of the convener of #Revolution Now protest, Omoyele Sowore.

According to him, “Sowore and Kanu are not the same, when it comes to the first one I didn’t have difficulty to say go, but I have difficulty with the second one.”

While pointing out that Kanu is being held in accordance with the Constitution, he maintained that, “the matter is still in court, let’s wait for the court.”

Sowore was arrested in 2019 and prosecuted for allegedly calling for the forceful take over of the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Federal Government through the office of the AGF in February this year, filed a notice of discontinuation of the case.

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has shelved aside the Federal High Court injunction, stopping the reinstatement and enthronement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano, by presenting his appointment letter to him.

The Governor presented the reinstatement and appointment letter to the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, at the Mini-Durbar ceremony that took place at the Africa House of the Kano State Government House on Friday, May 24.

Speaking while presenting the letter, Yusuf said, “Sanusi is a victim of the immediate past administration, who is now being restored to his rightful position to lead the people”.

It would be recalled that Sanusi was removed unceremoniously by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, but an end came to the four years hiatus following the signing of the Kano State Emirates Councils (Repeal) Bill 2024 by Governor Yusuf.
