After Surviving Bökö Hárám, Captain Ikpeama Kílled In His Home State  By His Ówn People In Aba, Abia State

Capt Lucky Ikpeama

By Suleiman Anyalewechi.

Two other Soldiers, both from Abia State, also kílled along with the Captain

On Thursday, May 30, 2024, Army Captain Lucky Ikpeama was kílled in his State by his öwn people.

Captain Ikpeama young, his whole future before him, was from Abia State. He hailed from the same Local Government Area as the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti – Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa  South Local Government Area.

The Captain, the only son of his parents, was, for years, in Maiduguri, the Northern part of Nigeria, battling Boko Haram terrorists. While there, his parents, Mr Amos and Mrs Evelyn Ikpeama, were on their knees, praying that their only son be posted  out of Maiduguri so as not to be killed by rampaging terrorists. He was their joy.

Their prayers were answered when after his tour of duty in Maiduguri, Captain Ikpeama was posted to his South-east Zone, specifically, Abia State. But sadly, on Thursday, the Captain was brutally killed by his own people, in his own State.

Killed along with him were four others, two of them, ironically, from same Abia State. One of them is Sergeant Charles Ugochukwu from Ugwuanabo Council, Abia State.

Their only crime was that they were deployed to their State to help protect their people from hoodlums, masquerading as members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB.

On Thursday, it was their luck to be redeployed to the Obikabia Junction from Arongwa Junction where they were first posted.

IPOB had declared a sit-at-home order in the South- east, beginning  from May 29 to 31, in remembrance of the Igbo who lost their lives during the Civil war. All pleas to the group not to restrict movement, especially, as it would affect about 300,000 students in the zone, writing their West Africa Examination Council, WAEC examinations, fell on deaf ears. Instead, the Group asked WAEC to shift the date, for an examination scheduled for same day in the whole of West Africa.

On Thursday, most of the Igbo students missed their Mathematics examination and will wait till 2025 to take it.

It was in a bid to enforce the sit-at-home order that the hoodlums swooped on Captain Ikpeama and his colleagues, killed them in a most heartless manner, and set their vehicle ablaze.

Ironically, same Thursday as Captain Ikpeama and colleagues were killed, Governor Otti issued a statement to say his Government will not confront the promoters of sit-at-home order as they were free to mourn the Igbo who were killed in a genocide the way they wish. Incidentally, one of the ways they mourned was to kill Captain Ikpeama, two other Abia born soldiers and two other colleagues of theirs.

As at the time of writing this, there has been no condemnation of the killings by Otti, but condemnations have poured in like claps of thunder from outraged Igbo stakeholders.

First to condemn the killings  and sued for peace was Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State who doubles as the Chairman of the Forum of South East Governors. Mourning the death of the soldiers on behalf of his colleagues, he said the perpetrators were not only heartless, but were giving Igboland a bad name. He described the killing of the innocent soldiers at their duty post as unprovoked, provocative, and urged Security Agencies to fish out the perpetrators.

Both IPOB Leader, Nnamdi Kanu and the President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel  Iwuanyanwu, have condemned the unprovoked killing of the soldiers.  Iwuanyanwu, who conveyed Kanu’s condemnation after visiting him at his detention facility, said the detained IPOB leader, was saddened over the killings, and distanced himself from it.

The duo of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt Hon.Benjamin Kalu, and the former Governor of  Abia State, now, Senator representing the Abia North Senatorial District  Orji Uzo Kalu, in strongest terms condemned the killing of the soldiers in the Obikabia area of Obingwa local council of Abia state  by the yet to be identified gunmen on Thursday May 30

Suing for peace amongst the people and Nigerian Military, the Deputy Speaker,  in a statement issued on Thursday, by his media aide, Levinus Nwabughiogu ,also commiserated with the families of the victims ,while assuring the Military hierarchy of legislative interventions to unravel those behind the despicable act.

Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu, who represents the Bende Federal Constituency described the killing of military personnel on lawful duties as unwarranted outrageous ,unjust ,cruel and absolutely condemnable.

He regretted that Aba people, known nationally and globally for their industry, skills and  creativity, could allow themselves to be hookwinked  into locking up their shops and closing their businesses to stay at home.

On his part ,Senator Orji Kalu said the incident is evil ,wicked and totally unacceptable ,insisting that all efforts should be made to fish out the perpetrators of the gruesome killings.

The former Senate Chief Whip in a statement issued on his official site on Thursday ,May 30 noted that military personnel do not deserve to be maltreated in view of the crucial roles they play in national security.

“The killing of soldiers  at a military check point in Aba area is barbaric .

“The perpetrators must be identified for appropriate actions .For the sake of growth and progress of the South-east ,all hands must be on deck to fish out criminals in the region” part of Senator Kalu’s statement reads.”

Ominously, neither the Police nor the Military, has commented on the killings. The Military’s silence is already spreading fears in Aba.

Tinubu Intensifies Battle Against Governors; They Will Fight Back

0
Bola Tinubu With State Governors
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appears not relenting in his recent quest to put state governors in the country on the spot, and make them accountable to their people.
The president, on Thursday in Abuja, the nation’s capital, told some northern leaders, under the leadership of Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, that state governors need to do more so that Nigerians can enjoy the dividends of democracy.
Tinubu told the northern leaders that the reason why governance has not trickled down to the grassroots  is because some governors have abandoned their state.
According to him, some state governors had abandoned their states, and relocated to Abuja as soon as they were elected into office.
The president’s remark was contained in a statement issued by Ajuri Ngelale, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity.
“We are running a constitutional democracy. I will appeal to you to summon the governors. I am doing my very best to enhance the revenue base of the country. They must equally be sympathetic, and they must urgently consider the needs of the local people,” Tinubu said during the meeting at the Presidential Villa.
“People reside in the local communities. That is where they work, farm, and live. If the local governments are not effective in delivering services; as leaders, we must not hang on to the numbers. We have 774 local government areas, but are they truly effective? Do they solve problems for Nigerians? Do they coordinate development programming with the state and federal governments?
“Who is being held accountable for the performance of the 774 local governments? Maybe we should look at recalibrating. What was good four years ago may not be good today. When we want the votes, we go to the locals; when we get the votes, we move to and focus on Abuja.”
The president’s remark comes on the heels of the recent suit filed by the federal government against state government over the management of local government funds.
The suit filed last week by Lateef, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, political analysts insist was meant to put the state governors on the firing line of Nigerians, as a result of thr current economic crisis in the country.
Not a few Nigerians have blamed the federal government for the hardship in the country due to unfriendly policies.
The federal government would not want to take the blame alone, keen analysts said, the reason why it’s now putting pressure on Nigerians to call their governors to account.
The suit filed by the AGF at the Supreme Court is billed to be heard next month as the apex court has ordered state governments to file their defence in Seven days. The federal government must also respond to the defence in 12 days, the nation’s highest court said on Wednesday.
Those watching the world ongoing blame game between the federal and state governors said the former believes that once the LGA are rescued from the stranglehold of state governors, there will be less pressure on the centre because more developments are likely to spring up at that level.
Currently, many state governors are allegedly mismanaging the LGA funds, using the State/ LGAs Joint Account.
The major  effect of this, analysts insist, is that more meant for the development of the grassroots have been hijacked by the governors who either divert such or spend them as they please.
Meanwhile, those watching the current cat and mouse battle between the president and governors told the magazine that the governors will fight back with ferocity.

Foreign: Trump, Convicted Ex-US Leader Could Be President Again

Donald Trump
President Donald Trump
History has been made as Donald Trump has become the first  former United States president to be convicted of criminal felony.
The former US leader was convicted on Thursday in a New York court over allegation of falsifying business documents to evade tax, in the case now famously known as the “Hush Money Trial”.
The jury that convicted him returned the guilty verdict on all 34 charges brought against him by the prosecutors.
Not a few of his supporters have described the trial as politically motivated by the Biden administration which is afraid of defeat in the next presidential election. They insist they will vote for Trump despite his conviction.
But the former president opponents described his conviction as a very sad moment for the country, saying Americans who currently support him could change their mind as the election approaches.
Trump, meanwhile has pointedly accused President Joe Biden of culpability in his predicament, describing the trial as a plot to stop him.from becoming president for a second time.
The crux of the case, according to prosecutors, is that the former President committed the act to corrupt the 2016 presidential election which he won by defeating Hilary Clinton, then presidential candidate of the Democratic Party.
He would  be officially sentenced on July 11, according to the US laws, few days before he officially becomes the Republican Presidential candidate for the November 2024 election.
Despite the conviction, Trump who has described the jury’s verdict as “rigged” also describing Juan Merchan, the judge  who presided over the case as “corrupt convicted” judge is neck-to-neck in the opinion poll with incumbent President Joe Biden, on the question of who is likely to win the presidential election later this year.
According to US laws, Trump can still contest the presidential election despite the felony verdict on him.
Also, Trump is not likely  to go to prison over the conviction, analysts say because  he is a first time offender, according  to  the New York state laws.
In worst cases, first time felons are only made to serve four years maximum in jail or pay a fine as an option. Community service is  also part of the punishment for felons in the state.
Trump defense attorneys are said to be planning  to challenge the verdict in the appeal court after the sentencing later in July.
Trump Could Still Contest  For President
The U.S. Constitution only requires that presidents to be at least 35 years old and U.S. citizens who have lived in the country for 14 years.
In theory, Trump could be sworn in from jail or prison on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2025, if he were to defeat  Biden.

Kano Royal Crisis: Gov Yusuf Confers With NSA Over Lock Jam

0
Nuhu Ribadu with Abba Yusuf

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Amidst the ongoing  tussle for the control of Kano royal stool, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf,  a prime figure in the dispute, on Thursday, May 30,2024, paid a visit to  the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, at his office in Abuja.

The Source reports that the Kano State authorities had last Saturday, May 25, accused Ribadu of facilitating the re-entry into Kano earlier in the day of the deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero .

The State’s Deputy Governor, Abdulsalami Gwarzo, had specifically alleged that  the  NSA provided the two aircrafts and Security Operatives that escorted Emir Bayero back to the ancient city after less than a day that he left in deference to the 48 hour dateline issued by Governor Yusuf for the dethroned five Emirs  to vacate their various palaces.

However, Ribadu instantly rejected the allegations, demanding instead a retraction and public apology from the kano state authorities, and or risk a legal battle.

His 24hour ultimatum was however met, with the Kano State Deputy Governor, last Sunday May 26, tendering a public apology to the NSA.

He blamed the State Government position on a misleading intelligence, noting that the State authorities and the good people of Kano sincerely regretted any inconveniences its accusations may have caused the person and office of the NSA .

Reasons for the  visit by Governor  Yusuf to Ribadu which was  announced on his official site on Thursday, however remain unknown, as he only stated that both of them had fruitful discussions.

But speculations have been rife that the sudden visit might not be unconnected with the dicey situation in the state over the Emirship feud.

An authoritative source revealed that one of the major reasons for the visit was the Governor’s seemingly frustration with the attitude of Heads of Security Agencies towards his authority as the Chief Security officer of the state .

For one, ever since last Thursday, May 23, when Governor Yusuf, in disregard of  a restraining court order proceeded to remove Emir Bayero and those of Gaya,Rano,Karaye, and Bichi ,he has found himself walking a parallel path with heads of security agencies, who have  insisted on obeying the restraining order to the letter.

Governor Yusuf’s worsening working relationships with co-members of the State Security Council , the source further revealed has been a matter of great concern for the State authorities.

His visit to the NSA is said to be at once a  trouble shooting effort aimed at rejiging his relationship with the Security Chiefs, and to seek ways out of the current royal lock jam.

Imo Assembly lauds Uzodimma As Night Landing Facility At Sam Mbakwe Airport Comes Alive

0
Hope Uzodimma- Governor of Imo State

Governor Hope Uzodimma has been lauded by members of the Imo State House of Assembly for his foresight that led to the installation of night landing facilities at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri.

Until recently when Governor Uzodimma took the initiative, the more than 30 years airport has operated without a night landing facility, with the people paying dearly for it.

On May 25, 2024, the first aircraft from Abuja to land under the circumstance touched down at exactly 7.15pm at the airport with the newly installed night landing facilities illuminating the surroundings and attracting the attention of people from the host community – Umuohiagu in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of the State.

After about 40 minutes, the same plane that brought passengers from Abuja taxied off with passengers on board Lagos, a development that consummated the functionality of the night landing facilities at

the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport

Thrilled by the development, the Imo Assembly was full of commendations for Governor Uzodimma whom they said initiated the facilities as part of his administration’s enhanced economic agenda to position Imo State as an economic hub for regional, national and indeed, international connectivity.

The Assembly in a commendation letter to the Governor through the Clerk, Barr. Chinelo Emeghara, said it takes a visionary leader like Governor Uzodimma to initiate such a project whose economic benefits to the State cannot be overemphasised.

But there was a development in the Assembly preceding the commendable letter to the Governor.

The member representing Ngor/Okpala State Constituency, Hon Obinna Egu, who hails from the host community could not hide the joy and excitement on the faces of his kindred as he was moved to move a motion to commend the Governor.

Egu who urged his colleagues to support his Motion got their support and even more.

Part of Egu’s Motion read: “In the last four years, Imo State has witnessed massive transformation, especially, in the areas of infrastructural development, human capital development, improved health services, ease of doing businesses, improved welfare packages for civil servants and retirees etc, courtesy of Governor Hope Uzodimma’s visionary leadership and prudence in managing  men and resources.”

His Motion was seconded by the Chief Whip and member representing Oru-East State Constituency, Hon Chigozie Nwaneri, and co-sponsored by 15 lawmakers, including : Rt Hon Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu, Hon Kanayo Onyemaechi, Hon Chigozie Nwaneri, Hon Henry Agbasonu, Hon Innocent Ikpamezie, Hon Sam Osuji, Hon Bernard Ozoemelam and Hon Sam Otuibe.

Others include Hon Clinton Amadi, Hon Gilbert Nwosu, Hon Francis Osuoha, Hon Uche Agabige, Hon Dominic Ezerioha, Hon Johnson Duru and Rt Hon Kennedy Ibeh.

In their different submissions,  the lawmakers said that Governor Uzodimma may not know what he had done with the installation of the night landing facilities, revealing that kidnapping, armed robbery, and accidents that occur in the quest of Imo citizens rushing to Port Harcourt to go board flight in the face of emergency appointments has come to abrupt end.

An equally impressed Speaker of Imo State House Of Assembly, Rt Hon Chike Olemgbe had put to vote and it was unanimously adopted, hence the resolution passed to properly write and commend the Governor on the feat through the Clerk of the Assembly.

“Unprovoked Killing Of Soldiers In Abia Portray SE As Region Without Human Feelings” – Uzodimma Mourns

0
Hope Uzodimma - Imo State Governor
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State.:

The Governor of Imo State and Chairman, South East Governors Forum, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has condemned in very strong terms the killing of soldiers who were on lawful duty in Aba, Abia State by hoodlums masquerading as members of the Independent Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

The soldiers were ambushed and then killed by the gang of criminals who claimed to be enforcing a sit at home order in the South East.

Governor Uzodimma who addressed the media on Thursday in Government House Owerri had condemned the dastardly act which he said occured without provocation.

Governor Uzodimma urged the security agencies to “go all out and ensure that those behind it are caught and brought to book.”

He bemoaned what happened as “unfortunate, without any reason as innocent people doing their lawful duty were gunned down.”

He said the unfortunate situation was  a major setback on the peace process which the Governors of the South East have been pursuing vigorously by engaging the Federal government, security agencies and other critical stakeholders on how best to resolve the problem of insecurity in the South East.

Governor Uzodimma regretted that the action will erroneously portray the people of South East in bad light “as if we don’t have sympathy for human lives or that the peace process being pursued is not appreciated.”

The Governor seized the opportunity to condole with the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen. Toured Lagbaja, the Nigeria Army and the families of the soldiers who lost their loved ones in the unfortunate incident.

However, he reiterated the resolve of the leadership of the people of South East in general and the Governors in particular, not to leave any stone unturned to ensure that the needed peace to develop the region is achieved.

Governor Uzodimma repeated the call on the security agencies to do their job without hindrance and to ensure that those behind the dastardly act are fished out so as to serve as deterrent to others.

On the activities of the perpetrators of the killing, the Governor who described them as criminals said they were propelled by the memory of the past that is still hunting them, noting that, “we should find courage and appreciate the fact that a lot of work had gone into the peace process.”

He maintained that the South East region in general and Imo State in particular crave for peace and advised the people to come out and go about their businesses “without fear of any molestation by anybody.”

He  insisted that his government is doing her best in the area of security “and God is supporting and helping us.”

Kano Royal Crisis: Lawyers Involved In Conflicting Judicial Pronouncements Should Be Punished – Group

0
Aminu Bayero and Sanusi Lamido

By Suleiman Anyalewechi.

An Advocacy Group, Save the Poor and Needy Charity Initiative SPANCI, on Thursday, May 30, 2024, beckoned on the Chief Justice of Nigeria to act swiftly to save the Judiciary from self destructing.

Its call is coming against the backdrop of the conflicting and partisan pronouncements  emanating from  courts of equal jurisdiction on the festering struggle for the Emirship of the Kano Emirate .

Justices Mohammed Liman and S A Amobeda of the Federal High Courts Kano have seen their separate pro- Emir Ado Bayero rulings upturned  by a Kano State High Court presided over by Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu  in favour of the Kano State Government back Emir Muhammad Sanusi in the last few days.

The contradictory rulings have equally led to the Kano Emirate, for the first time in recent memory, play host to two Emirs, a development that has since raised the political temperature of the commercial hub of Northern Nigeria to  near boiling point .

Although, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, has since summoned the heads of the Federal and State high courts of Kano to Abuja over the development, SPANCI President, Ezekiel Bello, said the Nigerian Chief Justice must urgently halt the ugly trend.

In a statement issued and made available to the media ,the Advocacy body, insisted that the conflicting rulings represent a new low for the courts, as well as being inimical to the justice system, the legal profession, the rule of law and democracy.

“SPANCI frowns at this show of shame by our Judiciary .This is gross abuse of power and office that must be immediately investigated and punishable actions taken by my lord the Chief Justice of Nigeria CJN who is the head of the national judicial council NJC.

“This is a serious judicial perversion ,recklessness, and rascality which if not addressed has come to stay and will be repeated in future as precedent and antecedent to our justice system.

“The two courts have equal jurisdiction on the matter . They are courts of coordinate jurisdiction to each other ,.The state high court earlier granted an order favouring Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi .

“But in a turn of events ,Emir Ado Bayero who has been removed for a very long time also went to get what l will call a tackling, conflicting ,and jeopardizing order from the Federal high court to attack the initial order by the kano State high court in favour of Emir Sanusi which has caused tension in Kano State, as well as portraying our Judiciary as being corrupt.

“It is wrong to get the order of a Court to attack the order of the same Court of competent jurisdiction. The lawyers involved should be punished to avoid a repeat of this in the future.

“I think this has a political undertone. We hereby humbly appeal to our lord, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, to act in his capacity as the Head of the Judiciary Arm of Government in the country, to save the face and name of our courts, and prevent them from setting this bad record for our justice system and its stakeholders.”Comrade Bello pleaded.

Edo INEC Office Flooding: Commission Says Election On Course

0
Edo INEC Office Flooding

By Ayodele Oni

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians that September governorship election in Edo state will go as scheduled, despite the flood incident which ravaged the commission’s office in Benin city.

The commission promised that it would replace all facilities damaged by flood in its Edo headquarters office, before the poll.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu gave the assurance on Thursday in Benin, when he visited the state for on the spot assessment of the impacts of last week flooding on the state office.

Yakubu also assured Edo people that in spite the setback caused by the flood, INEC would continue with the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in the state.

“We are here basically to see for ourselves what happened to our facilities following the unexpected torrential rainfall and the flooding that occurred. Equally importantly for us to come and meet with you who are the staff in the Edo office.

“We thank God no life was lost. We thank God no injuries. But we want to assure you that in spite of the extensive damage, we have recovered to do the continuous voter registration exercise and we will recover to conduct the governorship election in September.

“We have three months and three weeks to the election today. So whatever we have lost in terms of critical equipment, whatever support facilities we need to replace, whatever office furniture and facilities we need to replace, we will do so.”

He said the commission would salvage some of the equipment that can be reclaimed, then mobilized resources from neighbouring states to replace the shortfalls for the successful conduct of the state election.

Yakubu, who was accompanied by some INEC national commissioners; Federal Controller, Federal Ministry of Works in Edo, Hassan Babatunde, said he came with a team that would help to assess the level of loss to the flood and way forward.

“We are also accompanied by the director of ICT because of what happened to some of the critical facilities for the election.

“Whatever we need for the forthcoming Edo governorship election we will make sure that we provide these facilities.

“Fortunately for us this is an off-cycle election so we can rely on our resources from the neighboring states for the election.

“It is only in a general election that each state office must be self-sufficient, but here we will call for additional resources from the neighboring states to ensure that there are no issues with the election.

“The present commission has a lot of experience in handling the Edo governorship election. For me personally this is going to be my third governorship election in Edo.

“We conducted the 2016 election. We conducted the September 2020 election and by God’s grace we are approaching the September 2024 election. So the CVR which is ongoing will not be affected.

“Whatever issues and challenges there, we will listen to the REC and its team and we will continue to respond.”
