One Year Of APC Rule In Kebbi Has Erased Years Of PDP Misrule – Govt

0
Nasir Idris - Governor of Kebbi State

By Ayodele Oni

Kebbi State Government has vowed not to be distracted by alleged campaign of calumny by the opposition People’s Democratic Party, (PDP), in its bid to gain cheap popularity.

The State Government maintained that one year in office of Governor Nasir Idris has been able to rectify some of the misdeeds of the PDP in its 12 years sojourn in the state.

Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ahmed Idris in a statement, said “What the APC government has actualized in just one year could not be accomplished in the 12 dark years of the PDP era of no return.

“Education has never seen such beautiful times like it is seeing today. The PDP is blind to the increase in teacher’s salary. It is claiming ignorance to the review of the retirement age of teachers from 60 to 65 and 40 years of service from 35.

“The PDP was sleeping when the government kick-started its policy of teacher training and re-training through well-organized and properly packaged training workshops.

The lame opposition party was in slumber when the government awarded contracts for the construction of 4 mega schools, the first of its kind in our history as a state.

“The construction work has since started in the headquarters of our four emirates and shall be completed to the glory of God and the benefit of our people.

“The urban renewal project of the present administration is a moving train which no tongue or hand can stop. Yauri town is set for a new lease of life.

“Government is encouraged by the feedback from our towns and villages. We wish to assure the people of good quality of work to be ensured through efficient and effective supervision by site engineers and other officials of the government. This wind of change will pass through Argungu and Zuru soonest.

“In our efforts to improve on the healthcare fortunes of our dear state, His Excellency, Dr. Nasir Idris abolished the casualization of health workers, approved the employment of 500 new health workers and ordered for an upward review of the salaries of medical doctors to be the same with those in federal health institutions as a way of controlling the exodus of health workers to Federal Government owned hospitals.

“The stage is set for a reformed, re-structured, rejigged and transformed educational system in Kebbi State. The PDP may not see all these but the people of Kebbi State who deserve good governance are seeing and appreciating the efforts of their own government.

“The government which has promptly paid students registration in all Nigerian tertiary institutions and settled tuition fees for all indigenes studying abroad under the Kebbi State scholarship, is most certainly a responsible and responsive government.”

Atiku Laments Continued Detention Of IPŐB’s Nnamdi Kanu, Condemns Killing Of Soldiers In Abia State

By Akinwale Kasali

Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President of Nigeria, has condemned the kïllïng of soldiers in Aba, Abia State during Thursday’s sit-at-home order imposed by the proscribed Indigenous People of Bïafra, IPŐB, across the South East of the Country.

The PDP Presidential Candidate at the 2023 Presidential Election said that despite the fact that the killing of the Soldiers is unacceptable, there was need for a political solution to the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of IPOB.

Atiku added that exploring a political solution for Kanu, who is facing treason charges will help calm tension in the region.

“The violence that led to the killing of soldiers and civilians in Abia State on Thursday stands condemned.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those who may have lost a loved one. May their souls rest in peace. But even more profound is the impact of yesterday’s sit-at-home in the Southeast region of our country on students writing WAEC examinations.

“The veil of the so-called Unknown Gun Men hiding undercover to unleash death and mayhem must be lifted to ensure that criminal elements are separated from legitimate agitators.

“To this end, without prejudice to the ongoing legal processes, I think the time has come to explore a political resolution to the Nnamdi Kanu and other associated issues. I believe that this will diffuse the compressor cooker situation in the region. It will be a win-win for all parties,” Atiku wrote on X Handle (formerly Twitter).

Kïlled Soldiers: Abia Government Takes Over Responsibilities of Families, Places N25m Bounty On Kïllers

Alex Otti - Governor of Abia State

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

“We will respond appropriately”, vows Governor Otti

The Abia State Government has taken over the responsibilities of the families of the five Soldiers kïlled in Aba on Thursday, May 30, 2024.

The Soldiers, three of whom were Abia sons, include Captain Lucky Ikpeama, an only son of his parents who survived the fight against Boko Haram terrorists in Maiduguri for eights, only to be killed by his own brothers when he was redeployed to his State, Abia.

The Defence Headquarters in a statement by its Director, Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, said the Military will retaliate the  killing of its five personnel in Aba with fierce, overwhelming, force.

The Soldiers were at their duty post in the Obikabia area junction, Aba, when hoodlums, masquerading as members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, swooped on them in their scores, killed them and set their operational vehicles on fire.

The hoodlums were enforcing the sit-at-home order imposed on the South-east region from 29th to 31st May by IPOB through  an announcement by Emma Powerful, IPOB’s Spokesperson.

The order, IPOB said, is to mark the anniversary of the hundreds of thousands of the Igbo killed and/or starved to the death during  Nigeria’s Civil War.

The Soldiers were at their duty post to maintain peace when they were overwhelmed and killed.

The incident happened at about 7.30am when the gunmen, who operated in many SUV vehicles, arrived and killed the soldiers.

In its reaction on Friday to the sad incident, the Abia State Government expressed its sadness and rgret over the killing of the Soldiers and placed a N25 million bounty on the perpetrators of the crime.

The Government also said it would take up the responsibility of supporting the families of the soldiers. The responsibilities include  payment of regular stipends to their spouses, and the education of their children to University level.

The Government, in the statement signed by the Commissioner for  Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu, also, condoled with the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, and the Military High Command in the country and prayed for the peaceful repose of the soul of the soldiers.

The statement reads in part:

“As a Government committed to security, safety and peace within its territory at all times, the Abia State Government considers the event of Thursday, May 30, 2024, a serious affront to its resolve by criminal elements who are hell-bent on returning Abia to the dark days of insecurity and fear amongst citizens, especially in Aba, the economic heartbeat of the State. This is more regrettable in the light of the fact that unprecedented investments have been made in the last one year to restore the city’s public infrastructure and reposition it as an attractive investment destination for local and foreign businesses.

“The Government will, therefore, respond appropriately to reassure citizens, investors and friends of Abia across the world that it would be relentless in bringing the full wrath of the law to bear on anyone or group who constitutes the slightest threat to the peace and security of the land, whatever be their motivation.

“To underscore its resolve, the State Government is offering a N25 million (Twenty-five Million Naira) reward to anyone with useful information that could lead to the location and arrest of any of the criminals connected to the unfortunate killings, and the subsequent state of apprehension across the city of Aba and environs. The security formations in the State have been directed to treat informants with all the confidentiality required to guarantee their full cooperation and assistance until the criminals are fully apprehended and brought to book.

“Furthermore, the Abia State Government will, in line with its commitment to the welfare of the security operatives working within its territory, take up the responsibility of supporting the families of the slain soldiers, including payment of regular stipends to their spouses, and the education of their children to university level. It is the least the State can do for the soldiers who died in brave service to their fatherland.

“The Government will also like to specially appreciate the officers and men of the Nigerian Army in the State for maintaining a high sense of professionalism in their response to the very distressing event. The State will also encourage our military and security personnel to continue to show restraint, whether at the checkpoints, on patrol, or while engaged in other security duties, even as the Government continues to work with all relevant stakeholders, including the security high commands, traditional and community leaders to gather and process all intelligence information which will ultimately lead to the capture of the perpetrators of the heinous crime at Obikabia Junction, and anyone directly or remotely connected to it in any form.

“The Government wishes to use this medium to encourage citizens to go about their legitimate duties without fear as necessary measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of residents, and businesses in all parts of Abia. Individuals with useful information on the activities and movement of criminals in their neighbourhood are also advised to share such information with the security agencies as quickly as possible for necessary action.

“Traditional and community leaders in all parts of the State are by this communication advised to set up suitable local intelligence gathering mechanisms in their localities and share whatever new information they get with the security agencies regularly. The State Government shall not hesitate to bring the full weight of the law to bear on any traditional or community leader found to be harbouring criminal elements in their domains.

“Lastly, the Abia State Government will continue to give all necessary support to the security agencies in the State for the purpose of protecting lives and property. Very importantly, the earlier warning to criminal elements to consider all parts of Abia as a no-go area is still in force. Any attempt to test the will of the Government, as happened on Thursday, May 30, 2024, shall be resisted with every resource at the disposal of the State. Abia shall remain very hospitable and accommodating to all law-abiding citizens and those who engage only in legitimate businesses as defined by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria while it shall continue to be a very hostile space for anyone whose actions or inactions, are capable of disrupting the peace and security of our communities.”

It would be recalled that the Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, had said on Thursday that his Government would not confront the promoters of sit-at-home order, and added that they were free to mourn the victims of the genocide perpetrated against their people as they wished.

Sadly, one of the ways some of them mourned was the unprovoked killing of the soldiers.

NECA To NLC/TUC: Focus On Job Security, Job Creation, Not Wages

Labour Union in Meeting with FG

By Akinwale Kasali

As the Federal Government and the Organised Labour fail to reach a compromise on the new minimum wage for Workers, the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association, NECA, has appealed with the Minimum Wage Committee to focus on job creation and job security in view of the increasing number of unemployed youths.

Adewale Smatt Oyerinde, NECA’s Director General, in a Statement said, “ What the Committee was inaugurated to negotiate is a MINIMUM wage and not a general salary increase as being peddled. It is the minimum amount that no employer should pay.

“ However, employers with more capacity can pay above it. Other variables such as productivity, competence and skills should be the key variables and driver of wage increase.

“ It is disheartening that the survival of business enterprises, who ordinarily are the biggest creator of jobs, has been relegated to the background. It is no secret that many organizations have either left the country or reduced their capacity utilization, thus fuelling the rising unemployment rate.

“It is our firm belief that in our current economic situation, a 100 percent increase in the national minimum wage is sufficient to drive growth and enable a path towards wealth creation, enterprise sustainability and economic renaissance or rebirth.

“We reiterate that what is being negotiated is a national minimum wage, to enable the most vulnerable employee and not a general salary increase.”

The leadership of the National Association of Nigeria Students, NANS, has demanded for transparency in the implementation of the Student Loan Scheme.

It urged the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led Federal Government to appoint individuals of unquestionable integrity and competence to oversee the disbursement of the loans.

NANS, the Apex Student body,  said that the implementation is done with utmost transparency would ensure the scheme’s success and guarantee its sustainability.

Pedro Obi, NANS National President made the call in a statement in Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital on Friday, stressing that there is need for urgent action on the alleged deportation of Nigerian students from Teesside University in the UK for defaulting on their school fees.

NANS insisted that the Federal Government must take immediate and decisive action to protect the rights and futures of students abroad.

While commending President Bola Tinubu-led administration for initiating the student loan scheme, NANS called on the government to engage all relevant stakeholders in the implementation of the scheme.

According to the students’ body, the loan, if properly implemented, would not only alleviate the financial burdens faced by many students and their families but is also capable of ending the mass exodus of Nigerian students outside the country for studies.

The statement read: “To ensure the success and integrity of the student loan scheme, we urge the federal government to prioritize transparency and accountability in the disbursement of the loans, and this must be done by engaging all relevant stakeholders.

“ It is crucial that the government appoint individuals of unquestionable integrity and competence to oversee the disbursement of student loans. These appointees should be drawn from diverse backgrounds, including academia, finance, and civil society, to ensure a balanced and fair administration.

“We also urge the government to put in place transparent and effective monitoring mechanisms to track the disbursement process and ensure that funds are allocated appropriately. This includes regular audits, public reporting, and feedback channels for students to report any issues or irregularities.

“The loan scheme should be designed to be inclusive and accessible to all eligible students, regardless of their socio-economic background. Criteria for loan eligibility and repayment terms should be clearly defined and communicated to avoid any ambiguity or discrimination.

“We believe that with careful planning and execution, the student loan scheme will not only enhance educational opportunities but also contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of Nigeria.

“ We extend our full support to the federal government in this endeavour and look forward to seeing the positive impact of this initiative on our nation’s students and educational system.”.

The Kano State authorities have urged residents of the State to go about their lawful activities and disregard information making the round that Emir Ado Bayero and/or Emir Muhammad Sanusi will be leading the Friday Jumat Prayers at the city’s Central Mosque.

Both Emir Bayero and Emir Sanusi are currently locked in a fierce battle for the  control the soul of Kano Emirate Stool.

Reports from both camps have inundated the social media suggesting that both Emirs are set to lead the Friday prayers of the Muslim Umuahia in the commercial enclave at the Central Mosque in the Kofar Mata area .

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has named Nollywood actress Chioma Chukwuka Akpotha as its inaugural Goodwill Ambassador for Nutrition in Nigeria.

This partnership aims to raise awareness about the critical issue of malnutrition, which affects millions of Nigerians, especially women and children. Malnutrition remains a significant challenge in Nigeria, with severe acute malnutrition impacting 3.6 million children, and contributing to 50 percent of all deaths among children under five years old. The prevalence of malnutrition among women, adolescents, and young children undermines community health and development.

In collaboration with the Nigerian government and people, the U.S. government, through USAID, works to mitigate malnutrition by providing effective treatment for severe malnutrition, coordinating nutrition services, and promoting proven methods to support better nutrition, especially for mothers, infants, young children, and teenagers. As the Goodwill Ambassador for Nutrition, Chioma Chukwuka Akpotha has agreed to work to raise awareness about maternal health and child nutrition, promote healthy behaviors, and disseminate key nutritional messages.

“Chioma embodies the essence of advocacy and activism,” said USAID Mission Director Melissa Jones. “Her commitment to maternal health and child well-being is a calling – a calling to use her platform for the greater good, to amplify the voices of the voiceless, and to inspire action and change.”

“We celebrate this partnership with Chioma Akpotha, which represents a milestone in our commitment to collaborate with the Nigerian people,” Jones added. “Nutrition plays a vital role in the overall health and development of Nigeria, especially for its young population. By harnessing and leveraging its talent, Nigeria can continue to chart a course towards greater prosperity and progress.”

Chioma Chukwuka Akpotha expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “I am honored to be USAID’s inaugural Goodwill Ambassador for Nutrition in Nigeria. Maternal and child health is a cause close to my heart, and I am committed to using my platform to raise awareness and inspire positive change. Together with USAID, we can make a lasting impact on the lives of Nigerian families.”

Through this partnership, Chioma Chukwuka Akpotha’s genuine commitment to maternal and child health and nutrition, combined with her influential platform and USAID’s support, aims to inspire a nationwide movement towards better nutrition and health for all Nigerians.

The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested the Police personnel whose sträy bullëts from his riflë led to the dëath of two youths at an accident scene in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

The accident, involving a Lexus car and a Jincheng motorcycle, occurred at the Omisanjana area of Ado Ekiti.

Members of the Police Rapid Response Squad (RRS) were chasing young men suspected to be internet fraudsters, often referred to as “yahoo boys.” The suspects were driving a Lexus RX car.

Reports indicate that during their attempt to escape, the young men collided with two motorcycle riders.

Further accounts reveal that when some angry youths tried to help the suspects resist arrest by mobbing the police, one officer fired shots that fatally injured two boys.

The victims were rushed to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital but died there. Their bodies have been deposited in the morgue.

The Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, Mr Adeniran Akinwale, confirmed the incident in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer for the command, Sunday Abutu.

The Commissioner disclosed that “The command, upon the receipt of the information, deployed the State Traffic Section to the scene of accident to ensure there was no breakdown of law and order as well as ensure the safety of the victims.

“On getting to the scene, the operatives met resistance as some irate youths disallowed them from performing their lawful duty and insisted on carrying out jungle justice.

“This necessitated a call for re-enforcement to assist the officers on the ground.

“However, in the process, one of the officers accidentally fired a shot that fatally injured two persons.

“The officer responsible for the shooting has been disarmed, arrested and detained and shall be made to face disciplinary action immediately.”

Reactions As Firm Announces Plan To Site Bitumen Plant Outside Ondo

By Ayodele Oni

Reactions have been trailing proposed plan by a firm to invest on the vast bitumen deposit in Ondo state.

The management of Owena Bitumen Exploration Nigeria Limited led by Musa Ibrahim Mantu, had on Thursday visited Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa during which it promised to invest a billion dollars on the exploration of the mineral deposits.

Musa Ibrahim Mantu, the chairman of the company, during the visit, assured  residents of more investments coming into the State.

The team, which included expatriates from Italy and France, represents the company globally and specializes in mining, refining, and processing of bitumen and other allied resources.

Mantu, explained that the primary goal was to explore bitumen in Ondo State, with a processing plant already under construction in Ijebu Ode, projected to be the largest in the world.

Responding, the governor said that his Administration is open to offering incentives to attract both local and foreign investments into the economy of the state to drive development.

According to him, with the many natural and mineral resources in the state and plans of the government to develop a deep sea port and enhance infrastructure, the state is wide open for investors to do business.

However, reacting to the company’s proposal in a WhatsApp post, an indigene of Ikale, host community of the bitumen deposit alleged that the company might be out to rip off Ondo state government.

Olujimi Adekanle wrote that “my attention was drawn into a visitation to the Executive Governor of Ondo HE Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa where a company named Owena Bitumen Exploration led by one Alhaji Musa Ibrahim Mantu where he said he brought some foreign investors from Italy and France.

“He claimed that they are investing one billion dollars into the Exploration of our Bitumen in Ikaleland.

“But what really caught my attention was their claiming of the establishment of their Bitumen processing plant in far away Ijebu Ode in Ogun State.

“You are exploring our Bitumen in Ikaleland in Ondo State and you were planning of building the processing plant in another state, in the first place Bitumen is a very heavy mineral that needs a rail transportation from the site to a processing plant.

“The said company went and met Mr Governor and thought they have sealed a deal without visiting the inhabitants of the area concerned that will be displaced from their ancestral habitat when Exploration is to commence.

“Also a serious company or organization that really knows about Bitumen Exploration should know that their first assignment is to hold meetings with the custodian of this black gold and the establishment of a processing plant must be situated on Ikale soil.

“Moreover no company will explore our black gold without the echelon of an Ikale blood. To me the said Owena Bitumen Company just came on a white elephant project visitation to Mr Governor, they are simply scammers that wanted to use our Bitumen to dupe the unsuspected investors.

“Enough of all these drama that started in 1999 when Obasanjo came to Ikaleland to campaign and deceived we the ikales of Exploration of our Bitumen.

“Mimiko came used the Bitumen as a campaign tool. Just not too long ago the late Rotimi Akeredolu claimed they are already exploring our Bitumen to deceive our people, just only few of us cried out shouting that it was a scam.”
