Uzodimma Solicits More Budgetary Provisions For Army, Says Military’s Welfare Necessary For Democracy

Hope Uzodimma

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has emphasised the need for increased budgetary allocation to carter for, not only the expansion of Army Barracks, but for the welfare of the serving Military personnel, the Legion, their orphans, their wives and other dependants.

The Governor made the proposal when the House of Representatives Committee on Army on oversight function in Imo State paid a courtesy visit on him at the Government House, Owerri on Monday, May 6, 2024.

Governor Uzodimma pleaded with the National Assembly to consider giving the Army the necessary support so as to encourage them to come out and defend the State effectively, noting that, “sufficient funding is the answer.”

He added that the welfare of the Military should be of utmost priority to the Federal Government and National Assembly for the sustenance of democracy in Nigeria.

The Governor welcomed the Committee to Imo State and urged the Brigade Commander, 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze to seize the opportunity of the visit to show the members the problems facing the Army in the State in general and the Command in particular.

He expressed hope that the visit will bring  reprieve to the myriad challenges facing the the Army and possibly, proffer solutions confronting them in Imo State.

Governor Uzodimma recalled that recently, the Army in Imo State and the South East were challenged by criminal elements who indulge in banditry, kidnapping, oil theft and destruction of public and private investments, suggesting that it has become  necessary to ask for the assistance of the Nigerian Army in Imo State and South East to deal with the afore mentioned vices.

He recalled that recently, some military officers lost there lives to banditry, leaving behind orphans, widows and family dependants, and emphasised that such persons need support and assistance from the Federal and State Governments.

To cushion the effect of the problems those families living in the barracks are having, the Governor suggested that they need empowerment, power supply, means of transportation and even skill acquisition to  survive the vagaries of life they go through.

Governor Uzodimma however acknowledged the synergy between the Army and other Security Agencies, saying that such has become necessary to enable all of them to put in their best.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Committee on Army, Rt. Hon. Abdullahi Mamudu, accompanied  by other members told the Governor that they were in Imo State on oversight function of the Military formations and thanked the Governor for giving them the opportunity to visit him despite his tight schedule.

The Chairman added that their visit to the Governor, who is their senior colleague and veteran lawmaker, is to draw from his wealth of experience and seek his blessings.

He said their responsibility is to look at the budget of the Nigerian Army and to go round to ascertain what is on ground in relation to what the National Assembly provided for them.

He congratulated the Governor and the people of Imo State for reelecting him for the second tenure and described Senator Uzodimma as “a transparent and straight forward man who is leading his people aright,” just as he urged him to continue to do well for his people.

Present to receive the Committee were the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Lady Chinyere Ekomaru, the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Cosmas Iwu, the Chief of Staff, Barr. Nnamdi Anyaehie and members of the Imo State Expanded Executive Council.

Other members of the Committee who came with the Chairman include Hon. Emeka Chinedu, Hon. Harrison Anozie Nwadike, Hon. Mathew Nwogu, Hon. Fom Dalyop Chollom and of course, the Commandant 34 Artillery Brigade Obinze,  Brig. Gen. U A Lawal.

LAHA Lawmakers Disagree With IGP Egbetokun On State Police

Kayode Egbetokun - IGP

By Akinwale Kasali

The Lagos State House of Assembly Lawmakers have disagreed with the Inspector General of Police, Dr Kayode Egbetokun on his stance on the creation of State Police. They said his position on the subject matter is unacceptable.

The Lawmakers said that it was unreasonable for the IGP to say that Nigeria is not ripe for the establishment of State Police.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, directed the Clerk of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, to write to the IGP and the National Assembly stating that the State’s Lawmakers reject Egbetokun’s position.

Days back, the IGP, represented at a recently held one-day dialogue on State Policing, themed, ‘Pathways to Peace: Reimagining Policing in Nigeria’, opposed the establishment of state police, arguing that it would increase ethnic tension and cause divided loyalty in states of the federation.

Egbetokun had suggested that the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, should be merged with the police force.

However, speaking at plenary on Monday, Obasa noted that the FRSC and the NSCDC have not been able to solve the problems of accidents on roads and pipeline vandalism respectively, stressing that he wondered how effective they would be if they are merged with the police force.

“In Lagos State, we have the Security Trust Fund through which successive administrations starting from that of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu have provided enormous support to the police command in Lagos State. Yet, crime of different dimensions has continued.

“This shows that no matter what Egbetokun has proffered as solution, such won’t solve our problem. The position of the IGP is unacceptable.

“We strongly believe that if we have state police, we would be able to solve the issues of crime in our nation or reduce it to the minimum.

“As we have seen in other climes, the United Kingdom has different levels of policing just like the United States of America. So why should ours be different?

“The lives of our people are very important and we must do everything possible to make sure we protect lives and property. We want to state categorically that we believe in state police and we want to urge the National Assembly to continue with its intendment to establish state police through the process of constitutional amendment,” Obasa said while praising President Tinubu for his resolve to end insecurity in the country.

Commending the Speaker for his stand on the issue of state police, the lawmaker representing Badagry Constituency 1, argued that with its current structure, it would be difficult for the Nigeria Police Force to effectively secure the country.

Also declaring his support for state police, another lawmaker, Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh (Ajeromi/Ifelodun 1), said each Nigerian state currently has a local security outfit in the semblance of state police.

“Today, which state does not have state police one way or the other? This is a cause that should be supported. For the IG to come out and say state police is not in the interest of Nigeria shows he is not considering the reality of insecurity on Nigerians,” he said.

In a bid to ease the pressure on infrastructural facilities within Maiduguri metropolis, occasioned by the influx of internally displaced persons IDP, the Borno State Government on Monday May 6, 2024 flagged off the construction of the 113- kilometer Maiduguri ring road. The project is expected to link the East, West and Southern parts of the State Capital.

The Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, who performed the official ceremony revealed that the project which is also to be  executed in phases, is his administration’s direct  response to the twin problems of congestion and  infrastructural deficits currently facing the State capital as a result of IDPs fleeing insurgency prone areas of the State.

Prof Zulum emphasised the need for the State Ministry of Works to closely monitor the project with a view to ensuring the delivery of quality and durable project.

“I want you to be very careful, and ensure that this road, after completion, will stand the test of time. Don’t look at the cost. And don’t compromise standards . I want this road to still pass integrity test in the next 30 years” the Governor charged ministry officials.

Update: FG Debunks Claim Of Considering US Military Base Proposal

Bola Tinubu

By Akinwale Kasali

The Federal Government has debunked the news which made the rounds that it was considering granting a request by the United States of America, USA, to establish a Military Base in Nigeria.

Public outcry had greeted the news but the Federal Government has asked Nigerians to perish the thought as it has no intention of doing so.

There were strong speculations that the US in particular was flirting with Nigeria’s top officials to secure a military base in Africa’s most populous country.

But the  Nigerian Government in a statement on Monday signed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the Government was not anticipating US military presence in Nigeria.

Idris said the FG is “aware of false alarms” being raised in some quarters alleging discussions between the Federal Government of Nigeria and some foreign countries on the siting of foreign military bases in the country.

But he said: “We urge the general public to totally disregard this falsehood.”

He said the Federal Government is not in any such discussion with any foreign country.

“We have neither received nor are we considering any proposals from any country on the establishment of any foreign military bases in Nigeria.”

Idris said the Nigerian government is already enjoying foreign cooperation in tackling ongoing security challenges, and the President Tinubu Government remains committed to deepening these partnerships, with the goal of achieving the national security objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

When the news filtered, several Civil Society Groups have criticized the move, cautioning the Nigerian Government from accepting such.

The Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, also opposed the relocation of United States and French military bases to Nigeria, warning of the dangers of compromising the country’s sovereignty and security.

In a statement on Monday, Comrade Muhammed Ishaq, the Acting National Publicity Secretary of the PRP, cautioned the Nigerian government against entering into any agreements that would lead to the establishment of foreign military bases on Nigerian soil.

“ The presence of foreign military bases on Nigerian soil may lead to a gradual erosion of our national sovereignty,” the party warned”.

It would be recalled that The US and France were booted out of Niger Republic and Mali by their new revolutionary leaders.

Before now, there were speculations that the US in particular was flirting with Nigerian top officials to secure a military base in Africa’s most populous country.

Nnamdi Kanu’s Wife Thanks Senator Ifeanyi Ubah Over Her Visit To Her Husband In Custody

Uchechi Kanu

By Gideon Njoku

Senator Ifeanyi Ubah has brightened the life of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, detained Leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB.

Kanu has been in the custody of the Federal Government since he was renditioned in 2021, from Nairobi Kenya to Abuja, Nigeria. He is being prosecuted by the Federal Government for alleged offences ranging from terrorism to treason, allegations he strongly denies. Not a few people have appealed and pleaded for a political solution to the Kanu issue, but the appeals all came to nought. And, even though a couple of Courts had ruled in Kanu’s favour and asked that he be released from detention, that too has come to nought.

Since Kanu’s detention, his wife, Uchechi, who lives in the United Kingdom, has neither visited nor seen him. All efforts she made, according to her, to visit her husband in custody were, always, turned down.

But this other day, she disclosed, she was allowed to visit him in the facility of the Department of State Security Services where the FG kept him, thanks to Ubah who represents Anambra South in the Senate.

It was a relieved and grateful Mrs Uchechi Kanu who disclosed the role played by Senator Ubah which enabled her to visit her husband for the first time in years. She was full of Commendation for the Senator.

She disclosed her visit to her husband in an address to IPOB members in the United Kingdom.

Her words: “Let me use this opportunity to thank Senator Ifeanyi Ubah who moved swiftly to facilitate my visit to my husband in DSS custody. I thank you Sir.

“I thank other Igbo Politicians, Governors, and political officers holders who are concerned about the plight of my husband.

“A lot of these elites are concerned about the unlawful detention of my husband and are working silently to secure a round table discussion for his release. I’m thankful to them,”

Ironically, when the IPOB Leader was renditioned to Nigeria from Nairobi, false and unfounded allegations were made to the effect that it was Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s private jet that was used to fly him (Kanu) to Nigeria.

Rowdy Session As Edo Assembly Speaker Suspends Fmr Deputy Governor’s Allies

By Ayodele Oni

The fallout of inter-politics which trailed the impeachment of the former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shuaibu, is yet to abate. The  Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has just approved the suspension of three lawmakers over an alleged plot to impeach him and other Principal Officers of the Assembly.

One of the suspended Lawmakers, Donald Okogbe, PDP, Akoko-Edo II, is an ally of the impeached Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, and was the only lawmaker who did not sign the petition that led to Shaibu’s impeachment.

The suspended lawmakers are two Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and one All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Lawmakers are Okogbe Ojeneh Donald, PDP, Akoko-Edo II, Addeh Emankhu Isibor, APC, Esan North-East I and Iyamu Bright, PDP, Orhionnwon II.

Agbebaku, who said the trio were suspended indefinitely alleged that they plot to change the leadership of the house.

He alleged that the three suspended members were being influenced by external forces to cause chaos and remove the leadership of the house.

The Speaker also alleged that some persons brought native doctors into the house at midnight on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 to make some demonic incantations and dropped charms in the assembly complex.

The suspension of the lawmakers, however, created tension at the house as the affected lawmakers kicked against their suspension.

In a rowdy session, the three suspended Lawmakers were seen screaming “Mr speaker you do not have the right to unilaterally suspend any member (s) of the house.

“You must call for votes. Allow members vote on the matter.”

The Speaker, thereafter, adjourned plenary abruptly.
