Accident at IMSU Junction

By Suleiman Anyalewechi.

Barely two days after an articulated truck crushed to death no fewer than 15 persons at a police check point in the Lokpanta area of Abia State along the Enugu- Port Harcourt highway, tragedy again struck early Saturday night, May 18, in Owerri the capital of neighbouring Imo state.

Another long truck lost control and rammed into several vehicles at Imo state University, IMSU, junction.

The tragic incident has, as at the time of reporting Sunday morning, so far left on its trail six deaths including a lecturer with the Department of Marketing, IMSU,  Dr Nicholas Isinwa.

Imo State Police Command Spokesperson  Henry Okoye, while confirming the tragic incident as well as the casualty figure, added that the injured are receiving attention at the Federal Medical Centre FMC  Owerri .

The death of the IMSU lecturer, Dr Isinwa, in the tragic road accident has equally been confirmed by his younger sibling Okpor Dominic.

An eye witness said one person died on the spot, while others were pronounced dead by the medical personnel at the FMC Owerri, where other injured victims are said to be receiving medical attention.

The tragic incident which occurred at about 7.00pm on Saturday, according to some accounts resulted from an alleged recklessness on the part of the truck driver who in an effort to go against traffic rammed into some vehicles, mostly commuter buses on the opposite lane .

However, the Imo police Command has appealed to motorists and other road users to always abide by traffic rules and regulations to avert  future occurrences of such unfortunate mishaps.

Tackling Nigeria’s Electricity Deficit for Economic Growth

0

By Abraham Amah

For over a month, Nigerians, NERC, the electricity regulations company, and the power distribution companies, called Dicsos, have been involved in brickbats over an increase in the electricity rates charged consumers, after they calibrated consumers into a nebulous band categorisation which still leaves many places in dark, despite the outrageous increase. This is a reflection of Nigeria’s inadequate generation and supply of electricity which still hovers around 6000 megawatts after more than 60 years of independence.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation and one of its largest economies, grapples with a chronic electricity deficit. This deficit not only affects the daily lives of Nigerians but also hampers the country’s economic growth potential. Due to the absence of steady power supplies, many manufacturing entities have shifted to using diesel to power their machines, and the high cost of diesel, which the government deregulated over ten years ago, to make it cheaper and available has made the condition worse and exacerbated the already unproductive situation, as the manufacturers would naturally pass on the cost to the consumers.

In the last couple of months, notable multinational companies have exited the Nigerian business environment based on many factors, two of the main being the inadequate supply of electricity to run their businesses and the high exchange rate which adds to the already high cost of doing business. Under such a dire situation, it is difficult to imagine how the President’s current efforts at attracting foreign direct investment, FDI, would pay off, much less handsomely. Investors cannot be trooping to a country where multinationals that have been there for over 50 years are exiting.

The inadequate power supply and its vicious attack on economic growth manifests conspicuously on the small and medium scale enterprises which are the main drivers of the economy. As their name suggests, these enterprises offer employment to millions of youths, much more than the big corporations and many of the advanced and emerging companies were made what they are today because of the attention the government paid to their survival. In Nigeria, these enterprises are burdened with lack of steady power supply and excessive taxes by all tiers of government.

Many of the small and medium scale enterprises that got loans from public and private credit agencies have closed shop because of their inability to maintain the huge financial burden of sourcing for private power in the absence of national electricity. Those that have managed to sustain their businesses despite all odds, cannot compete with imported products because their average cost of manufacturing is higher than imported goods.

Across all the sectors; health, education, tourism, entertainment, telecommunications and ICT, and households, players continue to groan under the weight of inadequate power supply and the unfortunate reality is that the government seems to have lost ideas about how to reinvent the sector and make it more purposeful to serve Nigerians in their quest for economic growth. By 2015, Nigeria was denoted as the biggest economy in Africa but the last rating for 2024, puts Nigeria as fourth, behind South Africa, Egypt and Algeria.

A cursory look at the efforts put in by the government will reveal that, more than any other factor, corruption has been the bane of the power sector in Nigeria. Between 1999 and 2007, former President Olusegun Obasanjo sunk more than a billion dollar in trying to revive the faltering power sector. That money went down the drain into private pockets and till today, not even one Nigerian has been held responsible for that mishap.

When the sector was deregulated, due process was not seen to have been followed and Bureau of Public Enterprises, BPE, the institution responsible for the selling of the predecessor company, the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, handed over the assets to their cronies and associates who knew next to nothing about the complex and intricate business of power. Today, those companies are mired in huge debts and asking the federal government to sink in billions again as bail out funds. The circus show continues and the Nigerian people are as usual, at the receiving end.

To make matters worse, the federal government retained the full ownership of the Transition Company of Nigeria, TCN, the sole transition company in the overall electricity value chain and that has hampered efficiency because it is treated as a government parastatal which is at the whims of a few powerful people who do whatever they want. Bureaucratic red tapism is the achilles heels of the body as necessary maintenance to respond to downtime takes longer than necessary because of officialdom.

Communities that have paid for transformers wait as long as six months to one year to get it fixed even when they weren’t supposed to pay for the transformer. So it is with other components that needs to be replaced to provide electricity for private and industrial consumption. Besides the inefficiency of TCN, there is the urgent need to upgrade the national grid infrastructure which keeps collapsing to the embarrassment of Nigerians. In one month this year, it collapsed three times and no one can quantify the attendant losses that trailed those collapses.

Surprisingly, what works for other countries doesn’t work for Nigeria. All the economies that have overtaken Nigeria both in Africa and other parts of the world, have invested heavily, with results, in the private sector and that is the basis of their massive economic growth which they rub in Nigeria’s faces at every opportunity. The stories of the quantum leap in power generation of Egypt, Vietnam, South Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore are commonly told here and elsewhere and one wonders why it is difficult for the Nigerian government to copy from such success stories.

At the twilight of the Muhammadu Buhari administration, he unbundled the electricity sector and moved it to the concurrent legislative list where both federal and state governments can legislate on it, and thankfully, some states are beginning to take advantage of that to build their own generating plants. As good as the move is, the present administration must ensure that it removes any clog in the wheel of that progress for it to make sense. A situation where a state generates power and still leaves the transmission solely in the hands of the TCN would make a mess of the good policy.

Gas has become an indispensable component of electricity generation and Nigeria has the largest gas deposit in Africa but as usual, is unable to feed the few electricity generating plants it has has with the gas at its backdoor. Many of the turbines that should ordinarily generate power are comatose because their specifications do not fit Nigeria’s gas supply models. Those who are building new power plants must ensure that there is a sync between their models and the type of gas Nigeria has so that plant owners do not get frustrated after sinking billions of dollar to build a power plant only to discover that they cannot feed it with the type of gas needed to power it.

As the government makes sincere and genuine efforts to offer interrupted power supply to households and businesses, it must also begin to look in the direction of where the world is going: renewable energy. A lot of countries currently focus on renewable energy for the supply of electricity to their people and while Nigeria is still grappling with the current situation, the government must also focus so that it can take advantage of the opportunities offered in this new found sector to add to whatever Nigeria has and ensure that Nigerians not only have steady supply of power for their personal use but also to drive the economic growth and retain its enviable position as the biggest economy and the true giant of Africa.

ASUU: Tinubu Averts Fresh Strike, Constitutes University Governing Councils

0

Barely five days after the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, threatened to embark on strike nationwide over the non-constitution of governing councils for universities, the federal government has constituted the councils.

ASUU had described dissolution of the Council, few months ago, by the federal government as illegal, warning that Nigerians should not hold it responsible if it embarks on strike over the issue.

The president of the union, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke issued the warning during a press conference on May 14.

He said, “ASUU shall do all within its powers to ensure that the dignity of the academia is fully restored in line with practices obtainable in forward-looking climes.

“So, Nigerians should hold the Federal and State Governments responsible if the matter of Governing Councils is allowed to snowball into an avoidable industrial crisis.”

Less that a week after the threat, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointments of at least 555 persons to serve as Pro-chancellors/Chairmen and members of Governing Boards of 111 federal universities, polytechnics and Colleges of Education.

The magazine learned that the appointees were recommended by the Ministry of Education, before the president gave his approval.

According to the advertorial from  the ministry, chairpersons and members were appointed for each institutions.

The appointment “ is from the Federal Ministry of Education…they make the nominations and forward them to the President to sign. But they are at liberty to release it from their end,” Bayo Onanuga, a presidential spokesman said.

Dangote To End Nigeria’s Fuel Importation In 4 Weeks

0

Africa’s Richest man, Aliko Dangote says fuel will no longer be imported into the country from June this year.

The business mogul spoke as a panelist at the Africa CEO Forum Annual Summit in Kigali, Rwanda.

His remark is coming amidst the recent fuel scarcity in the country that has shot up the price of petrol to over N1000 per litre in some major cities, including Lagos , Port Harcourt and Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The magazine reported that the business man has built the world largest single train petrol-chemical refinery in Lagos, Nigeria.

The refinery which started production late last year has started producing diesel and jet fuel to the admiration of not a few Nigerians who believe that the perennial problem of fuel scarcity will soon be over now that Dangote has started production.

The company had during the week announced plans to import 20 million barrels of crude oil from the United States.

Speaking Dangote said the country should end gasoline importation within one month from now.

He explained that what is being produced from the 650, 000 barrel per day capacity refinery should be enough for the continent in terms of  diesel, petrol, jet fuel, potash, phosphate, and urea amongst others.

Part of what he said: “Right now, Nigeria has no cause to import anything apart from gasoline, and by sometime in June, within the next four or five weeks, Nigeria shouldn’t import anything like gasoline; not one drop of a litre.

“We have enough gasoline to give to at least the entire West Africa, and diesel to give to West Africa and Central Africa. We have enough aviation fuel to give to the entire continent and also export some to Brazil and Mexico,” he said.

“Today, our polypropylene and our polyethene will meet the entire demand of Africa, and we are doing base oil, which is like engine oil; we are doing linear benzyl, which is a raw material to produce detergent. We have 1.4 billion people in the population; nobody is producing that in Africa.

“So, all the raw materials for our detergents are imported. We are producing that raw material to make Africa self-sufficient.

“As I said, give us three or a maximum of four years, and Africa will not, I repeat, not import any more fertiliser from anywhere.

“We will make Africa self-sufficient in potash, phosphate, and urea; we are at three million metric tonnes, and in the next twenty months, we will be at six million metric tonnes of urea, which is the entire capacity of Egypt. We are getting there.

“For some of us, despite the boom of the capital market in the US—you know, Google, Microsoft, and the rest—we didn’t participate; we took all our money and invested in Africa.

“We had this dream just about five years ago, and we said we wanted to move from five billion dollars in revenue to thirty billion dollars in revenue, and we made it happen. It is possible and now we have made it happen and now we have finished our refinery.

“Our refinery is quite big; it is something that we believe that Africa needs. If you look at the whole continent, there are only two countries that don’t import petroleum products, which is a tragedy.

“They are only Algeria and Libya. The rest are all importers. So, we need to change and make sure that we don’t just go and produce raw materials; we should also produce finished products and create jobs.

Meanwhile, not a few Nigerians are asking whether his promise to end gasoline importation will lead to a considerate reduction in the price of the commodity considering the high price that is being charged for petrol and diesel across the country.

AbdulMalik Sarkin-Daji- Niger State House of Assembly Speaker

By Ayodele Oni

After much pressure and intervention by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, the planned mass wedding of a-100 female orphans in Niger state has been shelved.

The Speaker of Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkin-Daji, had planned to marry-off 100 orphaned girls to assist them.

Following the interventions by Traditional and Religious institutions from Niger State on the matters surrounding the mass wedding, the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs has expressed its readiness to partner with the Speaker of the State House of Assembly to improve their lives through various initiatives.

Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye disclosed this  in her office while giving an update on the Ministry’s position about the mass wedding.

She informed that the Ministry will ever remain steadfast in the implementation of its mandate, especially in the area of the protection of the lives of women, children and the vulnerable in line with the policy thrust of the present administration.

Kennedy-Ohanenye informed further that the intervention has provided a solution to the court injunction earlier filed by the Ministry halting the marriage until thorough investigation is carried out on the children, especially their ages and preparedness for the marriage.

She stated that both the Ministry and the Speaker have now agreed to partner, with a view to improving the lives of the children through the deployment of various initiatives such as formal education, skills acquisition, as well as provision of tools that meet with their specified areas of interest.

The Minister noted that with the partnership, the orphans have now become part of the Ministry’s family.

“I have taken the village as a job, I’m promising Nigerians that  I will make sure I will not fall their hands, I am going to empower them with sustainable economic empowerment.

“I’m going to onboard them on our portal, and whatever the Federal Government is doing for every other person, all of them will get, the Ministry will not abandon them.”

While commending the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, Emir of Kotangora, Alhaji Mohammed Barau Muazu, as well as religious institutions for their intervention towards the resolution of the matter, Kennedy-Ohanenye appealed to Nigerians to join hands with the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Administration in its determination to improve the lives of Nigerian women, children and the vulnerable for the betterment of the nation.

The Minister further commended Nigerians for their understanding, patience, and support towards the initiatives, programmes and projects embarked upon by the Ministry.

Northeast Governors Lament, Says Region Neglected By President Tinubu

0

By Suleiman Anyalawechi

The Northeast Governors Forum has expressed concern over alleged neglect of the region in the allocation of Federal Government Capital projects.

This is even as it has decried the nonchalant attitude of the Transmission Company of Nigeria TCN to the total black out which the region has been subjected to in the last one month.

The Northeast Governors made their position known in a communique issued at the end of its 10th meeting held in Bauchi on Friday, May 17, 2024.

The Communique which was signed by the Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, noted with dismay that despite its cry for attention on the state of infrastructure in the region which has  been consistently echoed in  previous communiques, particularly the poor and deplorable road networks along economic corridors that link the region with the rest of the country, nothing serious seem to be happening.

“The roads from Enugu up to Maiduguri is in a deplorable state,  and the railway from Enugu to Maiduguri has been destroyed. This is a major route for regional trade and very important for integration, peace building, and national unity .

“The region is, also, not  included in the National infrastructure plan for the transition from PMS to the Compressed Gas.

“The Forum is calling on the Federal Government to look into the situation and consider the reconstruction of this basic infrastructure along Enugu-Maiduguri economic corridor and inclusion of Northeast in all National Development Plans and Initiatives ” the communique noted .

The North East Governors Forum also said it is dismayed by the  carefree disposition of the TCN in addressing the worsening power supply situation in the region, adding that it is watching keenly the fulfillment of the promise by the TCN to restore normalcy in the power supply system before May 27 this year.

“The Forum urged the Federal Government to direct the TCN to take immediate action . The Forum has resolved in the short term to set up a solar power plant that can generate 10 megawatts per State.

“Forum notes with deep concern that Northeast is the only region in the country that has one transmission line in six states with a land mass of nearly 300,000 square kilometers and a population of 35 million.

“This has made the region the most vulnerable and disadvantaged for industrial development and economic growth with over %70 of its population below 35 years of age.

“Forum, therefore, calls on the Minister of Power and, in deed, the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency, implement the extension of the 330 kV transmission line from Makurdi -Gassol-Jalingo linking Adamawa -Gombe -Bauchi and the extension of the 330kV line from kano-Bauchi -Yobe, linking Borno.

“Forum resolved to maximize the existing hydropower generated  in the Kashimbilla and Dadin Kowa dam which the region has not been benefitting from because of the failure of the ministry of power to extend the 330 kV line of the Makurdi -Gassol-Jalingo line”,  the Communique further stated .

The Northeast Governors also urged the Northeast Development Commission to adopt more consultative approach in its activities ,as well as prioritize its projects to ensure that its activities impacts on the lives of the people.

“Forum calls on the NEDC to work with the States in the region for Energy Development to unlock the energy potentials of the region and lessen the energy paucity burden on the people”

By Ayodele Oni

Ekiti State Government has given approval for the renovation and equipping of 11 additional general hospitals in the State, to enhance healthcare services for residents.

According to Dr. Oyebanji Filani, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, this new initiative will ensure that all 21 general hospitals in the state are upgraded and adequately equipped to meet the healthcare demands of the people of Ekiti.

The Commissioner said already 10 general hospitals had already been renovated by the previous administration of Dr Kayode Fayemi.

Dr. Filani spoke in Omuo Ekiti, while conducting an inspection tour of several general hospitals including Ijan, Ijesa Isu, Omuo, Ilupeju/Itapa, Ayede, and Ifaki to assess their condition, identify areas requiring improvement, and provide encouragement to staff members.

The Commissioner called on people in the State to go for routine medical checks and present themselves at the state healthcare facilities for treatment early.

He said, “We have 21 general hospitals. Two years ago during the time of Dr Kayode Fayemi, we renovated 10 of them. The beauty of continuity is to recognize that even though you have done some, you have to continue with the rest.

“Governor Oyebanji, having taken the mantle of leadership, has approved that the remaining facilities be renovated. General Hospital, Ijan Ekiti is one of those that will be renovated; we have already started there.

“The general hospitals at Ijesa Isu, Iye Ekiti, Ayede and a host of other of our facilities will be renovated and completed within the next four to six months.”

Dr. Filani said the present administration has taken steps to address the issue of staff mobility within the health sector in the state with pay parity and improvement cum payment of other necessary allowances.

The Commissioner added that more doctors would soon be recruited, saying, “Only recently, we opened up space for doctors in the state. In the past, we only got two or three persons who applied for such, but in the last one, 19 doctors applied. So, it’s a sense that we are moving in the right direction.

“The way forward is to be able to address all these issues and our goal is to absorb all of them so that we can distribute them to as many of our facilities as possible.”

The Commissioner, who hailed health workers in the state for commitment to duty, however, said maintenance of equipment was necessary.

“I will encourage all health workers across the entire state to ensure that all the infrastructure and equipment are properly maintained so that they can serve our people here in Ekiti.”

“I Will Support Obi’s Presidential Ambition In 2027” – Atiku

0

By Akinwale Kasali

Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2023 Presidential Election, Atiku Abubakar, has promised to support  Peter Obi,  in the 2027 Presidential Election. But it will, however be on two conditions.

Obi who was Atiku’s running mate in the 2019  Presidential Election under the flag of the PDP, dumped the Party in 2023 for the Labour Party. He was LP’s Presidential Candidate.

However, both Atiku who contested under the PDP, and Obi lost the Election to President Bola Tinubu, the Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

But speaking in an interview with British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC, Hausa Service, Atiku said he would support Obi if Obi returns to the PDP, and if the PDP zones the ticket to the South-east. He said he vied  for the office in 2023 because the race was thrown open.

His words, “I have said repeatedly and I even said it before the 2023 general elections that if the PDP decides to zone the Presidential ticket to the South or South-East specifically, I won’t contest it.

“As long as it’s the decision of the party, I will abide by it. But I contested the 2023 Presidential ticket because it was thrown open to all members of the party.

“If the party decides that it’s the turn of the South-East and Peter Obi is chosen, I won’t hesitate to support him,” he added.

The former Vice President under the President Olusegun Obasanjo Government  also said there is a possibility for the merger between the PDP and Labour Party, adding that the members of the party would decide his fate in the 2027 general elections.

He also explained that his recent meeting with Obi might indicate a possible alliance leading up to the 2027 general elections.

Atiku: “It’s just a normal friendly meeting that we often have, particularly among us in the opposition parties. Such meetings are healthy for Nigeria’s democracy and in the country’s interest.”

About the possibility of the merger, he said, “Yes, it’s very much possible. We can merge to achieve a common goal. So, it’s possible, and nothing can stop it if we wish to achieve that.”

He, however, denied that the choice of Presidential candidate might frustrate the merger discussion, and said, “That’s not true. That challenge will not arise. I can tell you that the choice of who will fly the flag of the party won’t be an issue.”

Making clarifications on his active part in politics, he said, “Yes, we can’t keep quiet and watch things go wrong. People are suffering and we are committed to making Nigeria a better place.

Asked if he had become tired of politics,  he said:  “Not at all. I am still in active politics in Nigeria, at least, as long as God permits.

“My age doesn’t stop the young ones from testing their fate. Everybody, irrespective of age, is allowed to aspire to be anybody in the society, politically or otherwise.”

Speaking on his possibility of vying for the 2027 Presidential Ticket, he said that would depend on the decision of my party. “I can’t make any categorical statement on that. It’s the duty of the party to decide on the way to go in the next election.

“ Until that time comes. Let’s just wait and see how it will turn out.

“ It must not be interpreted like that. I must not be eyeing elections to have meetings with political friends and associates. Currently, we are practising democracy in this country which we fought for with our blood,” he added.
