The leader of pan Yoruba socio cultural organization, Afenifere, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, has backed the Federal Government on the proposed move to grant the 774 local governments in the country full autonomy.

This is contained in a congratulatory message marking the first year anniversary of President Bola Tinubu and signed by Afenifere National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi.

Ajayi quoted Pa Fasoranti as expressing delight on some bold steps that the President has taken in the last one year aimed at repositioning Nigeria adroitly.

“Before, during and after the Presidential election that brought you into the office last year, I gave you some ideas regarding how to tackle some challenges that Nigeria faced – and still faces.

“We also spoke about some of these issues when I led Afenifere delegation to your office in Abuja last month.

“I’m happy to note that, in line with your promises, you are making efforts at implementing policies that will enhance the situation of our dear country and better the lot of the people.”

The Afenifere leader pointed out that the reforms initiated by the government have the prospect of revamping the country’s economy and reducing the mutual distrust among the ethnic nationalities in the country.

He commended Tinubu on his government’s effort to rescue local governments from the strangulating grip of state governors.

“It’s undebatable that local government is the closest to the people.

“For, it is through it that the people at the grassroots can effectively feel the impact of the government.

“As the situation is presently however, the tight grip that state governors have on local governments is seriously denying the people of the benefits they should, by right, be deriving from their local governments.

“It’s in this respect that Pa Fasoranti, described the latest step taken by the Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi on behalf of the federal government as a step in the right direction.”

While expressing optimism that steps being taken by the government will soon soothe the pains of Nigerians, Fasoranti called on Tinubu to further look in the direction of infrastructure such as power and transport among others.

“Security is an important factor in any social equation.

“For, it’s in a situation where people are secured that they would be able to confidently engage in activities that will boost the economy and enhance inter-personal relationships.

“In order to institutionalize reforms being made, accelerate developments, enhance people’s participation in governance and engender the desired new Nigeria, there is the urgent need to restructure the country.

“Restructuring will deepen people’s participation in governance, boost the creativity of Nigerians and guarantee the future of the country.”

Tinubu’s One Year In Office: Reign Of Economic Hardship – Labour Party Reps

Hon. Victor Ogene

The Labour Party, LP, caucus in the House of Representatives has described President Bola Tinubu’s one year in office as a “Reign of economic hardship, insecurity and hopelessness,” which they said negates the Renewed Hope Agenda campaign promises of the current administration.

This was contained in a State-of-the-Nation statement in Abuja on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 signed by the caucus Leader, Afam Victor Ogene, to mark the first year anniversary of the current dispensation.

The LP caucus said it’s bewildering that the economy of the nation has dangerously continued on a free fall, one year after the inauguration of the current administration, thereby casting a cloud of doubt on the capacity of the All Progressives Congress ((APC) government to rescue the nation from the current situation, especially after what it described as “the precarious eight years of the past administration, characterised by widespread despair.

“After last year’s glitch-determined presidential election, and the legal gymnastics which ratified the indolent behaviour of the electoral umpire, our Caucus had taken a backseat, in the patriotic hope that, maybe, just maybe, the beneficiary administration would be able to wrought magic and pull the nation from the precipice of economic annihilation.

“But, as can be obviously felt by the blind, and seen by the deaf, the entire country has, after one year, come to the full and unambiguous understanding of what President Bola Tinubu meant, when he said that his administration would continue with the ‘legacies’ of his predecessor.”

According to the LP Reps, “The current staggering negative economic indices should alarm every Nigerian, as it has left many previous optimists, including ourselves, in glaring shock.”

It stated that the latest report of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), indicated that food inflation rate in March 2024 was 40.01 percent on a year-on-year basis – an increase of 15.56 percent points higher, compared to the 24.45 percent rate recorded in March 2023

“Curiously, the NBS had pointed out that the disturbing rise in food inflation was caused by an increase in prices of garri, millet, bread and cereal, yam, dried fish, meat, and fruits, considered to be  mostly every day staple food for the ordinary man, who is now forced to battle with daily hunger as a result of food scarcity and decreasing purchasing power.”

The LP lawmakers also noted that “From 29.9% in January – the highest since 1996 – Nigeria’s general inflation rate today stands at 33.20% and a poverty rate of 38.9%.

“Price of petrol has risen from N238.11 per litre, to N701.24, which is an increase of 194.5 %. Cooking gas price has increased by over 70%, diesel from N844.28 per litre to N1,415.02, which is 67.6% and public debt from N87.38trn to N97.34trn, an increase of 11.4%.

“Also, interest rate for bank loans which manufacturers and small and medium enterprises depend on for business and economic activities has increased in the past year, from 22.41 % to 33.69 %, which is an increase of 31.15 %.

“These verifiable figures and the excruciating living conditions of the people, more than any other thing, underscore the fact that

in just one year, the APC government has earned an unenviable record of perpetuating a cycle of poverty and underdevelopment, in spite of the flowery campaign promises it made just last year.

The Caucus said further: “President Tinubu campaigned on the mantra of ‘Renewed Hope Agenda.’ This was anchored on an eight-point agenda, which formed his social contract with the Nigerian electorate: food security, poverty alleviation, growth, job creation, access to capital, inclusion, rule of law and anti-corruption fight.

“This economic plan raised cautious optimism in many because it embodies the concept of utilitarianism – ultimate good to the greatest number.

“But now, we hasten to ask, has Nigerians seen any indication of fulfillment of those promises? On the contrary, the ordinary man on the street is weeping and wailing, with pervasive hunger hunting millions of homes. So, what we see, in actual sense, are failed promises.”

“To make things worse,” the LP Reps continued, “Then in an attempt to stabilize the naira, the government at the beginning of the year committed another faux pas by floating it. This caused the naira to undergo substantial depreciation, such that by February, the naira exchanged at an alarming rate of N1,900 against the dollar in the parallel market – and hasn’t achieved any stability since then.”

In the area of security, the lawmakers said: “In his 80-page manifesto with a 10-point agenda unveiled in October 2022 during the campaigns, President Tinubu had pledged “To establish a bold and assertive policy that will create a strong yet adaptive national security architecture and action to obliterate terror, kidnapping, banditry, and all other forms of violent extremism from the face of our nation.

“Given the security situation today, this appears to be a mere rhapsody of rhetorics, making many to believe that the administration lacks an effective security strategy, as Nigerians are bogged down by incessant abductions, displacements and massacres by non-state actors across the nation.

“As the nation begins the journey into the second year of this administration, we call on President Tinubu to, as a matter of urgency, prioritise on minimizing the suffering of Nigerians, by ensuring food security, access to clean water, healthcare and education.

“Tackling poverty and guaranteeing these necessities are pivotal to the sustenance of peace in the nation.

“We also call on government to intensify the fight against corruption, with transparent governance and accountability being paramount. We also warn that government should desist from throwing the nation to the whims of foreign financial institutions, whose policies in developing countries are often anti-people.

CUPP Says Tinubu Has Failed Nigerians After President ‘Bragged” In Lagos

0
Bola Ahmed Tinubu - President

The one year in office of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been marked by untold hardship and economic woes for many Nigerians.

This verdict is coming from the Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, which on Tuesday in Abuja, the nation’s capital rated the administration as a failure.

President Tinubu has just returned to Abuja after a four-day working visit which saw him commissioned some projects, according to government’s spokesperson.

For instance, the president last weekend flagged off the controversial Lagos/ Calabar coastal highway where he said “this is my bragging time” because he believes that the project will transform the lives of Nigerians.

But taking an overview of the administration in the last one year the coalition said there is nothing to celebrate, saying the lives of Nigerians have become worse than Tinubu met it when he took power on May 29, 2023.

CUPP said it’s now clear that President Tinubu have failed in the expectations that his administration will be better than that of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari.

From all indications the coalition spokesman Mark Adebayo, stated Tinubu has failed to make meaningful impact in all the areas of the economy including, security, education, health and infrastructure.

He explained that retrogressive forces have hijacked the administration considering the “unprecedented infliction of unmitigated suffering” on Nigerians, adding that Tinubu had given an indication that Nigerians will suffer under his administration first day in office.

CUPP said, “For the first time in the history of this country, Nigeria was unfortunate to have a president whose first minute in office was marked by unprecedented infliction of unmitigated suffering on the people.

“Even before the new president left the Eagle Square where he was inaugurated, Nigerians had been hit with what can be described as the most cruel economic assault that turned our lives upside-down, made businesses collapse, took food off millions of tables, sent children out of schools in their millions, increased insecurity exponentially, battered lives and scattered marriages irretrievably because the pump prices of fuel were increased by about 600% and the country’s inflation digits tripled instantaneously.

“All of these within the first 60 seconds of Tinubu’s presidency and Nigerians are yet to recover from that tragedy till date. His welcome package to Nigerians was that of mass suffering, mass hunger, mass poverty and a government that is absolutely insensitive to the plights of Nigerians.

“The sudden subsidy removal was both thoughtless and wicked! Without any sort of cushioning policy frameworks, the president went off-script and unleashed what amounted economic terrorism on Nigerians by declaring that subsidy was gone! Gone with the subsidy was our joy, hope and high expectations of a Tinubu administration that most thought was coming with a new deal of development, prosperity, peace and progress that he passionately campaigned on during the electioneering period.

“One year after, insecurity is on the crease. Right here in the center of Abuja, kidnappers and one-chance criminals are on rampage. Just that the crime rates in Abuja are being underreported by the media and the victims because of their lack of confidence in our security agencies. Just last week, a friend was kidnapped from Wuse Zone 1 and all her accounts were wiped clean, dispossessed of all her belongings and abandoned in an isolated place after hours of driving around Abuja without being accosted by security agents. She narrowly escaped death.

“To think that Abuja, the seat of government power and authority, where the president lives, where the IG of Police and all the heads of military, paramilitary and intelligence agencies, including the National Security Adviser reside can be this insecure is more than troubling. If they cannot secure Abuja where they are all resident, how can anyone expect them to secure entire Nigeria?

“For the past one week or more, we have seen ministers under this government reel out fantastic statistics about how wonderfully they had performed in the last one year, but Nigerians cannot see those wonderful things they are claiming to have achieved. It’s all about the more you look, the less you see. It is all audio without visuals.

“The real statistics is that there is greater unemployment and job losses in the last one year. It is that majority Nigerians have been economically disempowered as micro- and macroeconomic enterprises are collapsing in droves.

“When we talk about state capture, time will not permit us to interrogate the activities of a company like the Chagoury group. But very soon we shall do a thorough analysis of how this group’s activities cannot be said to be in the overall interest of Nigeria as a country except to benefit those in this government who romance that group.

“The so-called Lagos-Calabar coastal highway, for instance, is a wasteful white elephant project with no immediate direct economic benefits to Nigerians.

“This government has not performed well in the last one year at all and this is not opposition cynicism. It is both factual and real for all to see. All Nigerians understand that things have not been this bad.

“This government is both confused and clueless which informs the series of policy somersaults and trial by error they have been engaging in for the past one year which throws the socioeconomic space into more confusion and crises.

“This situation must teach Nigerians to take full advantage of the fundamental elements of democracy about the capacity of the citizens to make informed choices at periodic elections. Whatever we got wrong in 2023, we must get right in 2027 by making the right choice devoid of the current voids and damnation.”

All agitations and legal tussles regarding the last primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State have been laid to rest.

This follows the resolve of Jimoh Ibrahim, Senator representing Ondo South at the National Assembly,  to withdraw his suit challenging the emergence of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, as the candidate of the APC.

In a letter released to newsmen on Tuesday, Senator Ibrahim noted that the case with suit No FHC/ABJ/CS/588/2024 was withdrawn after the intervention by President Bola Tinubu.

The businessman turned politician had approached the Court to challenge the outcome of the APC direct primary election that produced Governor Aiyedatiwa as the Party’s  candidate in April, 2024.

He had alleged that the process was “rigged” in favour of the sitting Governor

The letter states: “The suit is now withdrawn due to the intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. The President called me, had a meeting with me, and assured me that he will, as the leader of the Party improve on internal democracy within our party, and  I will need to withdraw the case to enable him to chart a way forward.

“The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, earlier visited my Asokoro residence for several hours after another unsuccessful visit to my hotel room in Akure.

“I cannot disobey the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria because the issue am fighting for is not personal.

“It is simply to improve internal democracy to which the President has promised improvement. My respect for the President is absolute!

“Let me use this opportunity to thank Mr. President for the words of wisdom and encouragement during my meeting with him which lasted over one hour and his various interactions with me on the telephone during which he emphasized his commitment to internal democracy over and over again. Kano Royal Crisis: Court Issues Counter Order, Asks Security Agencies To Evict Bayero From Palace

Emir Aminu Ado Bayero

In a dramatic turn of events in the ongoing Kano Royal Stool face off, a Kano High Court, on Monday, May 27,  2024 issued a counter order restraining the Kano State deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero and four others from further parading, and/or presenting themselves as Emirs pending the hearing and determination of a motion filed by the Kano State Government.

Only on Thursday last week, Justice Mohammad Liman of a  Federal High Court sitting in Kano had issued an order restraining the Kano State Government from deposing the affected Emirs pending the determination of a motion on notice filed by Emir Ado Bayero

However, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf ignored the order and proceeded to depose the five Emirs shortly after signing into law a bill earlier passed by the State Legislators repealing the State’s 2019 Emirates Law which had  balkanized the Kano Emirate into five .

The State Governor had also proceeded, based on the strength of the Kano State amended Emirates law 2024, to reinstate Emir Muhammad Sanusi who was earlier deposed by the immediate past Governor of the state Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in 2020 .

But for ignoring the restraining order ,Governor Yusuf’s directives to security agencies to give effect to the deposition of the five Emirs of Kano, Gaya, Rano, Bichi, and Karaye was  ignored.

Muhammad Hussaini Gumel, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, leading other Heads of Security Agencies in the State said they will observe and respect the restraining order stopping the dethronement of the five Emirs as earlier directed by the Kano Federal High Court.

The parallel positions of the Kano State Government and security agencies had since resulted in Ado Bayero and Sanusi separately holding court as Emirs ,a development that has generated tension and anxiety.

Justice Liman had fixed June 3 2024 for hearing on the motion on notice filed by Emir Bayero against the Kano State Government.

Ruling on an ex parte motion filed by Bar, Ibrahim Isa Wangida ,on behalf of the Kano State Government, Justice Aminu Adamu Aliyu of the kano state high court also directed the Nigeria police ,army and other relevant security agencies to enforce the restraining order on the deposed five Emirs ..

Justice Aliyu specifically ordered security agencies to evict Emir Bayero from the Nasarawa Palace where he has been holding court since his purported dethronement.

“That an order of interim injunction is hereby granted restraining the 1st ,2nd ,3rd,4th,and 5th Defendants either by themselves, servants, privies and or any other persons or officers serving under them or acting in connection with any other persons from parading themselves as Emirs of kano, Bichi ,Gaya ,Rano ,and Karaye pending the determination of the motion on notice filed by the applicants.

“That an order is hereby granted to the extent that the Commissioner of Police kano state should immediately take over the palace of the Emir of Kano situate being and lying at state road kano and evict the 1st Defendant/Respondent ( Bayero) from the said palace pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice .

“That an order of this Hon.Court is hereby granted restraining the Bayero and other deposed Emirs from parading themselves as Emirs of Kano ,Bichi ,Gaya Rano and Karaye in the interest of peace in kano pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice .”

Hearing on the motion on of notice has been fixed for June 11 2024.

‘President Tinubu reassures the nation of his commitment to ensuring a safe and secure ambience of learning for the children while improving the standard of education.”

“I Can See The Glorious Future Of  Anambra And Nigeria” Gov Soludo Declares On Children’s Day; Targets Zero Out-Of- School Children

0
Charles Soludo - Governor of Anambra State

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Anambra State Government has said that investments in the education sector remains the most durable and beneficial.

This is even as Governor Chukwukuma Soludo has rated the sector high, noting that Anambra State  has the lowest number of out-of-school children in Nigeria.

The Anambra State Governor who spoke on Monday May 27 ,2024 at the occasion of this year’s Children’s Day held at the Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka the state capital, emphasised the need for stakeholders to invest massively in the  education sector

He noted that  a well coordinated and massive investment in the educational system is a sure way of securing the future of up coming generations.

“We call on everyone to invest in education because it is everyone’s responsibility. If you can  save the cost of your favourite drink ,you can buy a pencil for the child.

“That is a way  of investing in education. In two years, we have employed over 8000 teachers because the school children are our greatest assets.

“Currently, Anambra has the lowest number of out-of-school-children in the country . We are targeting to make it zero in no distance time.

“We are having sleepless nights because of you (children) . Roads will wash away, Sky scrapers will collapse ,but investment in children will stand the test of time ” Prof Soludo noted

The Governor lauded the efforts of teachers in ensuring that children placed under their care are properly moulded.

He assured that the State Government on its part will continue to recruit the best hands available as teachers, adding that Anambra children deserve the best.

Further underscoring the importance of Children’s Day celebration, Prof Soludo said it is all about the celebration of the future of the State and Nigeria.

” We are here to celebrate our future ,our future and others who were not able to join us . This is the  third time ,I will be witnessing Children’s Day since I assumed office . But I must say that ,so far this the largest .

“I can see the glorious future of Anambra and Nigeria as we behold their faces . We are deliberately investing in our children ,who are our bridge for skills needed here and beyond” Soludo stated .

The State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Ify  Obinabo, while emphasising the need for concerted efforts in the task of ensuring proper education of the child, noted that the well being of the child is not the sole responsibility of Government.

She, therefore, called on parents and guardians to take up the responsibility of providing the needed conducive environment for their children to flourish .

“Evacuate Deposed Emir Bayero Out of Kano State” – Kano Govt Urges Security Agencies

0
Abba Kabir Yusuf - Governor of Kano Sfate

By Suleiman Anyalewechi.

The Kano State Government on Monday, May 27,2024 insisted that in the count down to the reinstatement of Muhammad Sanusi as the Emir of Kano, it was not served with any restraining order from the Court.

It noted that out of the eight  respondents listed in the suit ,only the Inspector-General of Police,IGP was discovered to have been served with the Court papers.

The Kano State authorities which spoke through the Deputy Governor, have, therefore, appealed to President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, NSA, and all other relevant entities, to evacuate dethroned Emir Aminu Ado Bayero out of the State to avoid plunging it in to an avoidable chaos.

The State Government warned that the continued presence of the dethroned Emir is threatening the peace and stability of Kano, adding that already the struggle is gradually metamorphosing from a struggle for royal stool to  a political battle .

Gwarzo said that the State Government is worried that there seems to be  a marching order from the top to ensure a full implementation of the restraining Court order by Security Agencies in the State

“There have been talks around the court order, whatever the circumstances around the order, we as a government have  never seen or received any communication in that regard.

“There are about 8 respondents, and only one – the Inspector General of Police IGP was   served with the court order papers while the state Commissioner of Police CP ,the DSS and others were  not served . Like wise the kano state Government and the Attorney General were not served.

“You cannot act on anything that you don’t know .And that was what informed our actions till this moment .” Gwazo stated

According to him, it has become obvious that some powerful and unseen forces within the ranks of the ruling All progressive Party APC are instigating and sustaining the crisis.

“The Unfortunate thing is that it seems somewhere, somehow, some people up there are fueling the crisis, because the security chiefs told us point blank that they cannot flout directives from above.

“What it means is that somebody is directing the whole thing . Some body is directing the security people . The police and DSS escorted the Emir to Kano and directives were given that they should also receive and keep him at the Nasarawa palace a few metres away from the Governor’s office and residence.

“And ever since then, politicians from the opposition parties  have been vocal against the repealing of the Emirates law and reinstatement of Sanusi.

“They, opposition elements, have been taking people to the deposed Emir, meeting and conspiring to cause trouble and crisis in the State to the extent that they came out to make bonfire a few metres away from the Government House .

“Ever since the process for the repealing of the law, began people have been peaceful and happy with the development, only for us to start seeing this ugly development now.” the Deputy Governor lamented.

He noted that part of the destabilizing antics of the opposition is instigating petitions and protest in some of the areas affected by the dethronement exercise.

“Despite the deposed Emir of Gaya going on air to declare that he has taken the development in good fate, some people are still bent on causing crisis.

“Today, there was a sponsored protest carried out in Gaya by APC thugs. Some people claiming to be stakeholders from Bichi wrote a letter calling for the reinstatement of the deposed Emirs .

“All of the protesters have been discovered to be APC card carrying members. So the whole thing is now turning in to a political battle” Gwarzo stated.
