Ezekwesili Fumes Over Change In National Anthem, Says She Won’t Revert

Obiageli Ezekwesili

By Akinwale Kasali

Obiageli Ezekwesili, former Minister of Education under former President Olusegeun Obasanjo administration has lamented the reverting of Nigeria to the old National Anthem. She described it as obnoxious.

She said that the just signed Old Anthem Bill by President Bola Tinubu as the country’s new Anthem is suppressing  her right to dissent, as she  described the as an “obnoxious law repugnant to all who are of good conscience in Nigeria.”

Ezekwesili made this disclosure in a post on her X handle on Wednesday.

The former Minister said: “Let it be known to all and sundry that I, Obiageli “Oby” Ezekwesili, will, whenever asked to sing the Nigerian National Anthem, sing:

“ 1. Arise, O compatriots, Nigeria’s call obey

“To serve our fatherland

“With love and strength and faith.

The labour of our heroes past

“Shall never be in vain

“To serve with heart and might

“One nation bound in freedom, peace and unity.”

She added, “2. Oh God of creation, direct our noble cause.

“ Guide our leader’s right

“Help our youth the truth to know

“ In love and honesty to grow

“And living just and true

“Great lofty heights attain

“To build a nation where peace and justice reign.”

It would be recalled that both arms of the National Assembly, (the Senate and the House of Representatives), had passed the National Anthem Bill 2024, seeking to reinstate the old anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.” It was immediately assented to by President Bola Tinubu as the New Anthem.

The Bill on the changing of the National Anthem to the Old One generated controversy on the floor of the House of Representatives, as the promoter of the Bill, Julius Ihonvbere, anchored his argument on the need for patriotism and nationalism.

The Senator Godswill Akpabio-led 10th Senate passed the bill after reviewing a report by Tahir Monguno, the Lawmaker representing Borno North Senatorial District and Chair of the Judiciary Committee.

Kano Emirship: Sultan Abubakar-Led Islamic Council Warns Ulama Against “Contradictory Statements”

Sultan of Sokoto, Dr Sa'ad Abubakar
The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, has urged islamic clerics in Kano not to directly interfere in the Emirship tussle between Ado Bayero and Lamido Sanusi Lamido, who was recently reinstated by the state government.

In a statement signed by Prof Salisu Shehu  the Council’s Secretary General on Wednesday, the umbrella body of Muslims in the country said political and traditional leaders in the state should be allowed to settle the issue among contending parties.

Shehu stated that the islamic clerics should also refrain from making unnecessary statements capable of excerbating the political crisis in the state.

Following the reinstatement of Sanusi II by the state government last week, tension has surged among supporters on both sides.

The state government has accused some officials of the federal government, including the National security Adviser, NSA,, Nuhu Ribadu of smuggling Bayero back into the state, with the intension of distabilising the state.

Ribadu has denied the allegations, while conflicting court ruling on the tussle has also put the state on the edge of serious political crisis.

According to the  NSCIA the issue can only be resolved by the political and traditional leaders in the troubled state, adding that the judiciary should do its job of upholding the law on the matter.

Part of the statement said: “The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has noticed the contradictory statements emanating from some quarters of the Ulama in Kano concerning the current traditional leadership crisis in the state.

“At this trying period for the Ummah, the Council calls on Islamic scholars, who are custodians of Islamic learning, values and guidance, to exercise caution and refrain from making statements that can further exacerbate tension and polarise the Ummah.

“Ulama within and outside the state should prayerfully allow the current traditional leadership conflict in Kano, to be handled and resolved by the political, judicial and customary authorities.

“Meanwhile, the Council calls on Kano’s political, traditional and judicial authorities to resolve the current issue with the fear of Allah, fairness and justice.

“The Council calls on the people of Kano to sincerely call on Allah, remain calm and avoid taking laws into their hands. May Allah grant us sustainable peace in our dear Country, Nigeria.”

NSCIA is under the leadership of respected Sultan of Sokoto, Abubakar Sa’ad.

“You Are A Desperate Politician”, APC Tackles Atiku

Atiku Abubakar

By Akinwale Kasali

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has lashed out at former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, for “losing touch with reality.”

This is coming in the wake of the criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s one year in office by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential Candidate at the 2023 Presidential Election. Atiku stated that the nation’s economic fortunes has worsened since President Tinubu assumed office on May 29th, 2023.

The APC leadership has, however, labeled Atiku as “a desperate politician suffering from primordial envy.”

The National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Felix Morka, knocked Atiku, saying he was too blinded by his ambition to appreciate the outstanding first-year achievements of the President.

Morka also disclosed that the former VP was not in a position to dismiss Tinubu’s ongoing policies as ‘trial and error.’

He said: “Atiku’s self-serving efforts to minimize the bold, genuine, and metamorphic policies and interventions of the present administration only smacks of primordial political envy and crass desperation for the power Nigerians have so wisely denied him. He lives in an alternate reality of prejudice and unpatriotic desire for Nigeria’s failure so he may scavenge his way to an even more elusive presidency.

“The President needs the support and encouragement of Nigerians, not the bile-filled pessimism of partisan Atikus. Atiku’s false alarm of an imminent food scarcity boldface ignores the widely acknowledged proactive measures already introduced by President Tinubu to guarantee food security in the country.

“ The former Vice President’s swipe on the administration’s national security management again betrays his lack of touch with the reality of our current situation. Not only did the administration revamp and reconfigure the country’s security apparatus, but it also created a Special Security Fund to boost its superiority and operational effectiveness against merchants of crime and insecurity.

“Yet, Atiku turns a blind eye to considerable improvement in our security, especially in the North East where Atiku hails from. The opposition’s efforts to burden the administration with ceaseless, contrived, unjustified, and diversionary reproval is grossly miscalculated and misleading.

“Tinubu remains unshakable in his commitment to building concrete blocks of progress and greatness for Nigeria. While Atiku and his band of mudslingers idle away, the President will continue, unstoppably, to deliver high-grade infrastructure not only in our nation’s capital, Abuja but all around the country.”

Kogi: Arrest Bello Now Before He Flees Nigeria, Action Aid Tells FG

0
Yahaya Bello and EFCC officials
Action Aid  Nigeria has challenged the federal government on the need to use the force of state to arrest the immediate past governor of Kogi state, Yahaya Bello.
Andrew Memudu AI country Director in Nigeria while speaking to Vanguard said the former governor no longer enjoys immunity, and should be arrested immediately.
The magazine reports that Bello is being wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for alleged over N80 billion fraud while in office as helmsman.
Last month, the former governor was allegedly aided by his successor Governor Usman Ododo to escape from his Abuja home after the antigraft agency laid a siege on the property will the aim to arrest him.
Bello has challenged the planned arrest by the EFCC in court.
Speaking, Memudu noted that the fact that  Bello has been able to escape arrest by security agencies speaks of the commitment of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration commitment to fighting corruption.
Considering the weight of the case against the former governor, AAN said the Presidency should have come down hard to ensure that Bello is arrested at all cost to answer to the fraud allegation against him.
He said Bello should come out of hiding to prove his innocence instead of making himself a fugitive of the law.
According to him, the international community is watching Nigeria, on how the case will be prosecuted, urging the EFCC to prove that its war against corruption is not a ruse.
He added that Governor Ododo should be investigated to ascertain his culpability in the escape of Bello in Abuja, and If found guilty, should also be prosecuted.
AAN said, “When a former governor eludes legal accountability, it reflects poorly on the nation’s commitment to the rule of law and justice. This situation with Yahaya Bello demands more rigorous intervention than what is currently being deployed.
“In such extreme circumstances, one would expect the Presidency to wield its full authority and do more towards the immediate arrest of the former governor, ensuring he faces charges in a competent court of law.
“Allegations of corruption totalling over N80 billion against a former governor and his aide are grave matters that cannot be taken lightly, and the handling of their arrest should reflect the seriousness of these charges.
“If Yahaya Bello believes in his innocence, he should not hide behind any false pretense. Instead, he should step forward to defend himself and his integrity. His evasion of law enforcement only adds to public suspicion and further tarnishes his reputation.
“Surrendering to authorities and cooperating with the judicial process is essential for addressing the charges against him in a lawful manner. Demonstrating respect for the rule of law and legal institutions is not only in his best interest but also crucial for upholding the integrity of the nation’s justice system.
“The EFCC must ensure stronger coordination with the police, customs, navy and other security agencies to prevent further evasion, particularly under disguise. Engaging with international anti-corruption agencies to track and apprehend all those involved in the corruption charges who may want to flee the country, including Yahaya Bello, is very important now in ensuring that justice is served.
“Additionally, the National Assembly and the Kogi State Assembly, should exercise its legislative function to investigate and address any misuse of power by Governor Ododo.
“Where the constitution empowers the State Assembly, to investigate and hold to account (including motion to impeach) the Governor of Kogi State, who enjoys immunity as a sitting Governor.
“Upholding the independence of the judiciary is paramount to prevent political interference in investigations and prosecutions. All individuals, regardless of their status, must be held accountable under the law.
“If both Governor Ododo and Yahaya Bello are found guilty, they must face the full consequences of their actions. After all, the immunity of a sitting Governor is not absolute. The national and state assembly should take appropriate action to ensure that Governor Ododo is held accountable and that Yahaya Bello is brought to justice.
“The eyes of Nigerians and the international community are on this case, and failure to address it decisively may tarnish Nigeria’s reputation and deter international engagement in governance and judicial partnerships.”
Reports claimed recently that the former governor is planning to flee the country to escape prosecution.

Kano Emirate Conflicting Legal Pronouncements: CJN Summons Judges

Justice Olukayode Ariwoola - CJN

By Ayodele Oni

Following conflicting judicial pronouncements of the Kano state Emirate tussle, Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has summoned the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, and the Chief Judge of Kano State High Court to Abuja.

The Federal High Court in Kano, presided over by Justice S. A. Amobeda, issued an order for the eviction of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II from the Kofar Kudu Palace, reinforcing the authority of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero.

The judgement was seen as reinforcing the authority of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero.

Also, the Kano State High Court, presided over by Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu, issued an injunction to protect Muhammadu Sanusi II and other key figures from potential harassment by state authorities.

This order prevents any interference with the Emir’s autonomy and the seizure of key symbols of his authority, such as the twin spear, the Royal Hat of Dabo, and the Ostrich-feathered shoes.

These conflicting orders have led to significant confusion regarding the rightful authority and protection of the Kano Emirate.

The State High Court’s case is set for further hearing on June 13, while the Federal High Court has adjourned its case to June 4.

Rivers Gov Fubara Laments, Says Early Stage Of Administration Wasted On Political Crisis

Siminalayi Fubara - Governor of River State
Governor Similanayi Fubara

By Ayodele Oni

While other governors that were sworn in along with him on May 29, 2023, are celebrating one year in office, Rivers State Governor,  Siminalayi Fubara, has said his administration is just four months old in office.

Fubara’s remark may be due to the unending political crisis, which almost consumed him, spearheaded by his predecessor in office, Nyesome Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT).

The Governor, however, noted  that despite this, his administration is still standing strong, delivering dividends of democracy to the people and solving critical problems of governance.

Fubara said that the successes recorded so far were possible because God has been graciously upholding the government, offering it the right direction and giving him the strength to carry on.

A statement by Nelson Chukwudi, Chief Press Secretary to the  Governor stated that Fubara spoke at the State Banquet to celebrate his first one year in office and 57th Anniversary of the creation of Rivers State at Government House in Port Harcourt.

He pointed out  that while others were celebrating one full year of service to the people, he has only actually been in control of real governance characterized by prudence, purposefulness and protection of the interest of the State in the last four months.

He said that under his watch, Rivers State Government has provided “Governance that has the interest of our people at heart. Governance that is prudent. Governance that has respect for you: all of you.

“We decided to have this banquet today to say: thank you, thank you and thank you to everyone of you. You have supported us.”

“The last time I had this opportunity to dine with you was on 1st of January, 2024, and you know, the mood was not like this. We never knew we could even stand up till today.

“You see the reason why we need to give God all the glory. It is very simple: one thing is very important and unique; we are succeeding because we are on the side of God.”

“It is not just standing on the side of God; because every body professes to be standing on the side of God, even the native doctor would call on God.”

“But what is important is God being in your business. God is in our business. And because He is in our business, we will continue to survive, no matter where they are coming from.”

Governor Fubara insisted that his purpose in government is to deliver the dividends of democracy to Rivers people, which will not be compromised.

“It takes somebody who loves this State genuinely to embark on a project like the Trans-Kalabari Road. I am not from that axis of the riverine, where somebody would say I’m doing it because I’m from there. No. That project alone will cost this government over N225billion.

“But so far, to show our commitment that we are not just saying that we want to do it, we have started it, and we believe in delivering it.

“We believe that when this project is completely delivered, security issues will be reduced, development will come to our people in far remote areas that you could hitherto only traverse through the sea, issues of water piracy will be gone, including issues of boat mishaps that we keep recording.”

President Tinubu Signs Into Law Bill Repealing New National Anthem, Reintroduces Old Anthem

1
Bola Tinubu

By Ayodele Oni

The Compatriots will no longer arise,  but we continue to hail Nigeria as our own dear native land with President Bola Tinubu signing into law the bill seeking to reintroduce the old national anthem into law.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, announced this at the joint sitting of the Senate and House of Representatives on Wednesday.

Akpabio said the President signed the bill into law on Wednesday morning.

President Bola Tinubu, who later joined the joint session, confirmed ‘Nigeria, we hail thee’ as the “latest national anthem”.

Akpabio said the sitting was primarily to launch the new national anthem, explaining that the President would not be making a speech because he has to leave to launch the Abuja metro line.

The Senate and the House of Representatives had previously passed the legislation to swap the national anthem from “Arise, O Compatriots” to “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” at separate sittings.

Following the signing of the bill by the President to reintroduce the old national anthem, the joint sitting jettisoned what has been in existence since 1978, to adopt the former and newly signed national anthem ‘Nigeria, we hail thee’.

The old anthem, “Nigeria, we hail thee”, composed when Nigeria gained independence on October 1, 1960, has replaced the “Arise, O Compatriots” anthem.

Nigerians have continued to express surprise with the speed with which the two houses of national assembly passed the bill into law and the signing into law within 24 hours of its passage.

They continue to ask questions about the impact of the old national anthem will bring to cushion the biting economic hardship in the country.

Goodbye ”Arise O Compatriots”, Welcome “Nigeria We Hail Thee”, As Onanuga, Ngalele Test Power

Bola Ahmed Tinubu - Nigeria President

By Ayodele Oni

President Bola Tinubu confirmed Nigeria, we hail thee as the country’s “latest national anthem” when he joined a joint sitting of the National Assembly to mark the Silver Jubilee Of Nigeria’s fourth Republic.

The President, joined the joint session of the national Assembly to celebrate 25 years of the new democratic dispensation in the country which began in 1999 after a very long stretch of Military Rule.

Accompanied by the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, top aides in the Presidency and Ministers, the President’s visit confirmed the earlier statement by one of, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, that Presideny Tinubu would be part of the celebration at the National Assembly.

Another Aide, the presidential Spokesman, Ajuri Ngalele, had countered Onanuga’s statement in a terse release dismissing the content and even the author. Ajuri had written that “In view of public commentary concerning the President delivering a speech before a Joint Sitting of the National Assembly tomorrow, May 29, 2024, it is important to state that this information is false and unauthorized as the Office of the President was not involved in the planning of the event.”

The two contradicting statements   have shown that there is power play at the seat of power especially among the various aides of the President.

Ngalele was first to be appointed as Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity immediately after Dele Alake, current minister of solid minerals vacated the seat. He became the Presidential spokesman, that always speaks the mind of his principal.

Onanuga came on board thereafter with same office designation, almost, as Ngalele, also dishing out reports from the seat of power. Both of them have been coming out with statements on the activities of the president until Tuesday’s contradictory statements, which portrayed a perceived ongoing personality clash between the presidential spokesmen.

There is no doubt about the credentials and professional experience of Ngalele and Onanuga as the duo had paid their price in the profession.

From all indications, the offices of the two presidential aides are located right inside the presidential villa, the seat of power. The itinerary of the president, as the practice, after it is vetted by the Chief of Staff is expected to be circulated to all those aides that are directly working with the president, including the two spokesmen.

Onanuga’s statement was first to be released before  Ngalele’s  which dismissed the later as “false and unauthorized.”

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio had confirmed that

the joint sitting was primarily to launch the new National Anthem, explaining that the President would not be making a speech because he has to leave to launch the Abuja metro line.

Said an observer: “Let’s even admit that the statement by Onanuga was not authorized or approved before it was released to the public as claimed by Ngalele, the tone with which Ngalele dismissed the whole thing sparks a cold personality clash between the duo. There are two sides to a coin and in this business of journalism, every word, the moment it is released to the public has connotative and denotative meanings.

“There is no way the President’s activities will not suffer for as long as the two media aides are working at cross purposes. The reason for their appointments has become meaningless and useless for the office of the number one citizen. They should, while trying to please their godfathers, not allow the intrigues and dirty politics affect their assignments.”

As an endorsement of the “new” National Anthem, it was sang before the President left the National Assembly.

Governor Mbah Warns IPŐB Against Purported Plan To Disrupt Ongoing WAEC Examination As 300,000 Igbo Students Risks Missing WAEC Exam

0
Peter Mbah - Governor of Enugu State

By Akinwale Kasali

The Governor Peter Mbah-led Enugu State Government has strongly warned the Indigenous People of Biafrä, IPŐB, not to embark on its purported plan to disrupt the ongoing West African Examination Council, WAEC, Examination in the State.

IPŐB had threatened to disrupt the ongoing examination in the State on May 30th, 2024, prompting the Enugu State Government to severely warn the Group.

The Enugu State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Aka Eze Aka, in a Statement on Wednesday in Enugu, the State Capital said that there was no room for IPŐB’s activities in the State and urged the residents and students to go about their exams and normal activities on May 30, assuring them of adequate security.

He said the State Government noted with deep concern the statement credited to IPŐB directing WAEC to postpone the General Mathematics (Theory and Objectives) examinations scheduled for May 30, the day IPOB designated as “Biafra Heroes Day.”

Aka said: “We note with particular concern IPOB’s statement that the WAEC Board should not endanger the lives of students because the day is not safe for any individual in Biafra territory.

“This is unacceptable to us, not only because of the well-known position of the Enugu State Government on illegal sit-at-home orders which have dealt a great blow on the socio-economic life and fortunes of the South East region, but it is, also, because of the far-reaching consequences of a whole generation of Enugu children failing to sit for a fundamental subject such as mathematics in one year.

The commissioner stressed that the Igbo excel on the wings of industry, education, and human capital development, saying that any pronouncement or action that tends to deny the children their rights to education, which is their ticket to the future, was offensive.

He said the Igbo founding fathers and fallen heroes, who must be turning in their graves, would be wondering what could have happened to the Igbo as a people.

“Many of the architects of such unjust and evil agenda live in the comfort of civilised societies where they go to work and their children go to school every workday.

“The Enugu State Government recognises the sacrifices of our gallant forebears, who gave their all, including their lives, to defend the Igboland.

“But we also recognise that they died that we may not just have life, but to have the best of it, which can only come from developing our human capital to be able to excel in all that we do as individuals and collectively as a people.

“The government will not sit by and watch the future of our children aborted by such ill-conceived pronouncements intended to keep them at home.

“WAEC, as the name implies, is a regional body not just in Nigeria, but across West Africa.

“The subregion will certainly not wait for us.

He said the State Government, therefore, advises candidates sitting for the ongoing WAEC Exam in Enugu State to feel free to go to their respective centres to sit for their papers on May 30, without any fear.

“ While the officials involved in the conduct of the examination should also go about their legitimate duties without apprehension.

“No one has the right to impose any illegal and involuntary restriction of movement or business activities on anybody within the territory of Enugu State. Such will be met with the full weight of the law.

“Consequently, the Government has put the Security Agencies on red alert to ensure security of lives and property and also deal, according to the laws of the land, with anyone or group bent on scuttling the ongoing WAEC Exam,” Aka warned.

If IPOB carries out its threat, it means that about 300,000 Igbo children will miss the Mathematics examination, in which case they need to wait till 2025 to take it.

Kano Royal Battle: Gov Yusuf Outlaws Public Protests, Demonstrations, Alleges Plan By Opposition To Destabilize State

0
Abba Kabir Yusuf - Governor of Kano Sfate

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Amidst growing tensions, and unease surrounding the festering Kano Emirate Throne’s disagreement, the Kano State Government, on Wednesday May 29,  2024 announced a clamp down on protest marches and unauthorized public gatherings across the State

This is just as the State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has urged law abiding residents to go about their lawful activities without fear.

A statement issued by the Governor’s Media Aide, Sanusi Bature, said the State Government is in possession of credible intelligence suggesting that some powerful, but unnamed forces have concluded plans to disrupt the peace of Kano using students bodies and other political agitators from some parts the Northwest region.

According to the statement, Governor Yusuf’s decision is   in line with his constitutional responsibility as the Chief Security Officer of the State.

“By virtue of his position, the Governor has directed the Police, the Department of State Services, DSS, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, to apprehend, detain, and  prosecute any individuals or groups partaking in demonstrations on the streets of kano.

“We are privy to credible intelligence indicating that  the certain prominent figures from the opposition parties in kano have devised plans to sponsor student associations and political agitators from other Northwest States to incite chaos under the guise of advocating for the reinstatement of the dethroned Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero.

“The State Government has explicitly outlawed protests, demonstrations, or processions of any kind, and individuals found on the streets of Kano engaging in such activities will be promptly apprehended .

“Through this declaration, we caution student-groups against being manipulated by trouble makers who are resolute in fomenting disorder in Kano” part of the statement reads.

The statement further noted that the ban on protest marches and other related activities is a proactive measure to forestall the break down of law and order in the face of the challenges posed by the ongoing struggle for the Kano Emirate stool principally between Emir Bayero and  Emir Muhammad Sanusi.

The Source reports that following the May 23  dethronement of Emir Bayero and four  others to pave way for the  return of Emir Sanusi ,a spate of protest marches  and demonstrations have hit most parts of the State.

Specifically, irate youths have, in the last two days, embarked on a series of protests in Gaya and Bichi, two of the five areas whose Emirs were equally swept aside together with Emir Bayero.

Credible sources have revealed that with the conflicting pronouncements  emanating from the judiciary on the royal crisis, chances are that some of the interested parties may resort to self help any time soon.
