Accuses Organized Labour of treason for shutting down the National Grid

As Nigerians continue to lament the pathetic State of the nation’s economy, the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has called on President Bola Tinubu to address the situation as a matter of urgency.

But the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has appealed to Nigerians to be calm amidst economic challenges, while assuring Nigerians that President Tinubu is working diligently to improve the economy.

Akume said this while addressing the National Executive Council of CAN, on Thursday, June 6.

The former Benue State Governor outlined several measures the government is taking to address current hardships and also cautioned labour not to make decision that would jeopardize the efforts of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration.

He hinted that the current administration took over a turbulent country, citing that the country’s foreign reserves and many other sectors were poorly managed.

“We took over in a very turbulent weather. Foreign reserves were zero, but there have been massive reforms carried out by the President. One of them, which appeared to be a little bit tough for people to understand is the subsidy removal of fuel. People should stop shouting; they need to know the actual truth,” Akume stated.

He emphasized that the current administration has taken swift actions in implementing palliatives to cushion the effects of these reforms.

“We are all aware of the 35,000 naira wage award for workers, which means a 30,000 naira minimum wage with 35,000 on top of that. Additionally, 100 billion naira for CNG fuel buses will help reduce transportation costs and food prices,” he added.

Akume also highlighted the government’s efforts in supporting various sectors, including the allocation of 125 billion naira in conditional grants and financial inclusion for medium and small enterprises, and 150 billion naira in palliative loans to states to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal.

“We are providing 200 billion naira to support the cultivation of hectares of land, which is even more now,” he added.

He condemned the recent disruptions and the shutdown of the national grid by Organized Labour, labeling it  “a treasonable offence”.

“Nowhere in the world has labor ever tampered with the national grid. It is treason! Treasonable felony is economic sabotage, you don’t do that.

“We are trying to rebuild the economy. The president is picking up, and they want to destroy it. Of what use is that to all of us? That is not the way”, he said.

Reflecting on the process of setting the minimum wage, Akume explained, “In 2019, the minimum wage was legislated up to 30,000 naira. It is an exclusive issue in the constitution, not on the concurrent list, but on the exclusive legislative list. That is why it is the federal government, working with organized private sector and labor, that recommends it to the president for the national assembly’s attention.”

Reassuring the public, Akume stated, “It is not that we are not working. We are working, and that is why we implemented the 35,000-naira wage, which is more than the minimum wage. There are buses ready to be distributed, and soon, rice and other essentials will be available.”

He, however, stressed the importance of collaboration between the church and the government in providing essential services such as education, health, and agriculture.

“The Church must collaborate with the government in providing facilities for people whether it is in education, health, or agriculture. We don’t separate; we combine. There is a symbiotic relationship that can never be destroyed,” he said.

He concluded by emphasizing the government’s focus on productivity and economic stability.

“Our people must rise up and have something in their pockets. It is not about demanding 100,000 naira without productivity. We are looking at controlling inflation and ensuring a balanced economy,” he asserted.

Mike Ozekhome, Constitutional Lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, has lauded the  Federal Government for reverting to the old National Anthem, ‘Nigeria We Hail Thee’.

Ozekhome said the Federal Government is right this time and described the reintroduction as a round peg in a round hole.

He made this statement in an interview with Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday.

He said, “I am not a fantastic fan of the government but if there is one thing I think they have gone right; they have gotten right, and I applaud them for it, it is the reintroduction of this national anthem.

“I know that it was advertised that there would be a public hearing over the National Anthem.

“That was how I heard. Nobody came to invite me specially and if you’re called, you should go and participate. If you don’t participate, you should not cry later.”

He said unlike a change of constitution, having a new National Anthem does not require town hall meetings at the lowest levels.

Ozekhome lamented the lack of patriotism among some Nigerians and hopes the new Anthem will reinstate that in Nigerians.

According to him, the reintroduction of the Anthem was part of the recommendations of the 2014 National Confab.

Ozekhome’s comment came days after Tinubu defended the reintroduction of the anthem which the President described as his “priority”.

It would recalled they the reintroduction of the Old National Anthem generated mixed feelings with some section of Nigerians querying the reason behind its reintroduction.

Former Education Minister, Obiageli Ezekwesili had frowned at its reintroduction, saying of what benefits was it to the Economy of the Nation, vowing not to sing the Old Anthem.

The Presidency has said that it is untrue that Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, has suggested a new minimum wage of N105,000.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Strategy, responded to the report claiming that the Minister had proposed N105,000 as the new minimum wage, labeling the information as incorrect.

“The Honorable Minister of Finance and coordinating minister of the economy, Wale Edun has not proposed N105,000 minimum wage. The contrary story being disseminated is false.”

On Thursday, the Minister of Finance, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s earlier directive, presented a template with the cost implications of a new minimum wage to the President.

Recall that after a two-day strike by organized labour seeking an increase in the minimum wage, the President instructed the government team in the tripartite committee to present the cost implications of an affordable, sustainable, and realistic new minimum wage within 48 hours.

He issued the order during a meeting with the government negotiation team, led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, at the presidential villa in Abuja.

Peter Obi

Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party has emphasized that he is not only  a committed member of the Party but remains loyal.

Obi made the clarification following the confusion generated by his earlier statement which distanced “Obidients”, a political pressure group fiercely loyal to him, his principles and ideals, from any Political Party. The distancing was on  the heels of the creation of the Directorate of Obidients by the Labour Party which has now been scrapped.

But in a statement which clarified his earlier statement, Obi said he remains a committed and loyal member of the LP.

His words:

“For the avoidance of doubt, I remain a committed, Loyal Labour Party member’’.

“That is my definitive response to all Nigerians who may be in doubt about my party affiliation in the light of recent reports and conflicting interpretations of recent political expressions.

“I have just been confronted by a Journalist at Abuja airport wanting to know if my statement on Obidient Movement yesterday is a signal of my leaving the Labour Party.

“For the attention of all those holding such an impression and for the general public, I remain a faithful, committed and loyal member of the Labour Party.

“Indeed as a Leader of the party, my aspiration, and desire  working closely with other Leaders is to reconcile our valued members, and partner with like minds, and parties all over the country to build a strong and better Party that will catalyze and commence the rebuilding of a new Nigeria.

“My statement yesterday was intended to clarify some issues that are of concern to our teeming supporters some of whom are not members of any political party but are desirous for a new Nigeria. Our goal and aspirations remain that a new Nigeria is POssible.

Fuel Subsidy Payment – Why National Assembly Should Unrävel Deäl – Atiku

0
Atiku Abubakar

By Ayodele Oni

The Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, has insisted  that the present administration is still paying subsidy on petrol.

Atiku stated that  refusal of government to come clean on the issue is capable of dissuading investors.

He accused the Bola Tinubu- administration of diverting public funds through petrol subsidy, hence the refusal of the government to reveal how much is being spent on subsidy.

Atiku said this in a statement on Thursday signed by Paul Ibe, his

Media Adviser,  in reaction to a statement from the presidency.

The former Vice President said the clandestine subsidy regime was one of the reasons investments in the oil sector had refused to come in.

He said, “Tinubu has brought the shady nature of running Lagos to the federal level. He claims subsidy is gone but his Special Adviser on Energy, Olu Verheijen, says they are intervening from time to time.

“His Finance Minister, Wale Edun, described subsidy removal as an ‘ongoing process’. A document authored by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy revealing how much subsidy is being paid is now being disowned by the very authors of the document.

“Both the World Bank and the IMF have revealed in separate reports that Nigeria is still paying petrol subsidies, but the Tinubu government refuses to come clean. Even a senior member of the APC had revealed that subsidy was being paid.

“For a man who claims to be on a mission to attract foreign direct investment, it is ironic that he cannot see that his policy flip flops and lies are capable of dissuading investors.

“He must come clean on this subsidy issue since he doubles as petroleum minister. The Tinubu administration should be courageous enough to own their policies and outcome with their full chest and responsible enough to be accountable for their actions to Nigerians.

“This denial lends credence that money meant for the Federation Account, which ought to be shared to states and local governments, is being diverted without any form of accountability whatsoever.

“There is a need for the National Assembly to get to the bottom of the matter rather than focusing on frivolous issues.

“The National Assembly needs to be alive to its responsibilities, especially in the area of oversight. Posterity will not be kind to members of the National Assembly if they continue to look the other way while daylight robbery is taking place.”

Alleged N5.4trn Fuel Subsidy Revelation: “APC Govt Césspit Of Corrüption, Decéit” – PDP

0
Debo Ologunagba - PDP Publicity Secretary

By Ayodele Oni

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has maintained that President Bola Tinubu’s administration must come clean on the issue of oil subsidy rather than fooling Nigerians.

This was contained in a statement on Thursday signed by Debo Ologunagba, national publicity secretary of PDP.

The opposition party asserted that “the scandalous revelation that the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration is secretly paying a whopping N5.4 trillion as fuel subsidy for 2024, even after the President announced an end to fuel subvention further confirms PDP’s stand that the APC administration is a cesspit of corruption, lies and deceit.

“This revelation by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun shows the callousness of the APC administration, which is forcing Nigerians to buy fuel at very exorbitant price of over N800 per liter in various parts of the country, while trillions of naira is allegedly being paid as fuel subsidy into private bank accounts associated with corrupt APC leaders.

“Nigerians can recall how APC leaders in their characteristic manner tried to divert public attention when the PDP earlier alerted of this fraudulent act in a statement on May 28, 2024.

“This revelation by Wale Edun after series of denials by APC leaders and Government officials validates the axiom that no matter how long lies appear to thrive the truth, like the sun, will always prevail.

“Is it not provocative and an act of extreme insensitivity that while our nation is suffering from grave infrastructural decay and millions of Nigerians subjected to punishing hardship, acute poverty, life of misery and utter despondency by the removal of subsidy without cushioning measures, a staggering N5.4 trillion, in the name of fuel subsidy, is reportedly being cornered by corrupt APC leaders?

“The deceit which is prevalent in the APC government is responsible for plunging Nigerians deeper into destitution with no hope in sight under the current administration.

“Nigerians deserves to know; Where is the N5.4 trillion being taken from? Which agency of government is responsible for the payment of the said fuel subsidy and to who? What is the criteria used for payment?

“What volume of fuel is being subsidized and at what cost? Why is petrol still selling exorbitantly even with the revelation of the continuing payment of fuel subsidy? These are questions that need to be answered.

“The PDP demands that President Tinubu immediately clears the air and come clean by personally addressing Nigerians and ordering a public enquiry into the reported N5.4 trillion fuel subsidy under his watch.

“President Tinubu should immediately review his economic team with a view to getting capable hands and checking the corruption prevalent in the administration.

“Mr. President must also review the economic policies of the administration that is strangulating the people. Recognizing, accepting and reviewing a flawed economic policy is not weakness but courage. That is what define a leader at a time like this

“President Tinubu should listen to the heartbeat of Nigerians. There is hunger and destitution in the land. The reaction of a hungry people is better imagined! Mr. President, please act now.”

Finance Minister, Wale Edun, Presents N105,000 Minimum Wage Proposal To President Tinubu

0
Wale Edun - Minister of Finance

By Akinwale Kasali

The Sum of N105,000 proposal has been submitted to President Bola Tinubu as the New Minimum Wage for Workers by Minister of Finance, Wale Edun.

This is as the Finance Minister met the 48-hours deadline given to him by President Bola Tinubu.

It was gathered that the template proposes a new minimum wage of N105,000 (approximately $220 USD) per month for Nigerian workers.

The President is presently reviewing the proposal and would soon make an official announcement as regards the Minimum Wage.

The Orgaised Labour had embarked on a nationwide strike on Monday, which it paused on Wednesday to allow for further consultations with Government.

To resolve it, the President asked Edun to work out  for him, within 48 hours, the figures to present to  Labour  before the five-day ultimatum which Labour gave to the Government to sort it out expires.

Labour had threatened to  continue its strike if an agreement is not reached within the five-day pause.

The two-day strike paralyzed the country and inflicted a maximum power blackout in the country as the workers switched off the National Grid.

Emir Bayero vs Emir Sanusi: Court Reserves Ruling On Jurisdiction

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Justice Abdullahi Mohammed Liman of a Federal High Court, Kano, has reserved ruling till June 13, 2024, on the jurisdiction of the Court to entertain a motion on notice seeking to set aside the reinstatement of Muhammad Sanusi as the 16th Emir of the Kano Emirate Council.

The Source reports that following moves by the Kano state authorities to  dethrone Emir Aminu Ado Bayero and four others on May 23, one of the Emirate King Makers, Aminu Babaa DanAgundi ( Sarki Dawakin Maituta),  on behalf of Emir of Bayero, approached the Court to seek injunction restraining the Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf from dethroning Emir Bayero, as well as halting the reinstallation of Emir Sanusi, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit challenging the dethronement and reinstatement  processes .

However,  Governor Yusuf ignored a  restraining order issued by Justice Liman and proceeded to reinstate Emir Sanusi, after signing into law, the Kano State Government Emirate bill of 2024 as earlier passed by the state Lawmakers.

The 2024 amended law had also thrown over board the 2019 Emirates law under which provisions the hitheto single and behemoth Kano Emirate was partitioned into five, and Emir Sanusi dethroned in 2020 by the immediate past administration of Dr Abdullahi Ganduje.

During the hearing on Thursday, June 6, after the initial date of June 3 was thwarted by the organized labour strike, Justice Liman informed that there are two applications for consideration.

On one hand is that bordering on jurisdiction, and the other a motion seeking the order of the court to set aside the order stopping the reinstallation of Sanusi.

After hearing arguments from both sides, Justice Liman, subsequently adjourned to June 13 to rule on whether or not the  court has jurisdiction to continue with the matter.

Earlier, counsel to the plaintiff, M A Waziri, had told the court that his client Emir Bayero was not given a fair hearing in the process that culminated in his dethroment.

He further posited that the processes that enthroned Emir Sanusi were fraught with illegality and as such null and void.

The plaintiff’s Counsel consequently urged them to proceed with the matter  insisting that  it is within its jurisdiction.

But in his own submission, the lead counsel to Emir Sanusi, Muhammad Magaji urged the Court not to succumb  to the temptation of assuming jurisdiction as canvassed by the plaintiff Counsel.

He noted that it is a fact that the State House of Assembly has the constitutional powers to amend, repeal, and enact a law for the State, adding that in performing its constitutionally assigned duties, the legislators need not consult the plaintiff.

RMAFC Chides States For LGs Non Recognition As Third Tier Of Govt

Mohammed Bello Shehu - RMAFC Chairman

By Ayodele Oni

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has decried continued dominance of local governments in the country by states despite constitutional provisions.

The commission called for the complete autonomy for local government councils across the country.

It said it was lending its support to Federal Government’s legal efforts to free the local governments from the control of state governments by enforcing the Constitution’s provisions.

In a statement, RMAFC Chairman, Mohammed Bello Shehu said the local governments, as the third tier of government, should operate independently of state and federal governments to ensure effective grassroots governance.

He noted that the Nigerian Constitution recognizes federal, state, and local governments as distinct tiers, each drawing funds from the Federation Account.

Shehu criticized the dominance of state governments over local governments, saying this undermines their political, administrative, and financial independence.
