Northern Group Tackles Tinubu Over Economic Misfortunes, LGBT, Insecurity, Says Defence Ministers Inactive

Bola Ahmed Tinubu - President

By Akinwale Kasali

A Northern Group under the auspices of Katsina State Elders Forum, KSEF, has bemoaned the rise in insecurity, economic woes in the country, and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender LGBT policies of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led- Federal Government.

The Group said it was grievously concerned about the manner the FG has been handling the aforementioned, and criticised the Federal Government’s  lacklustre response to the unending threats from bandits. The Group lamented  the persistent threats to life across 12 Local Governments in the State.

KSEF Secretary, Malam Aliyu Mohammed, at a Media briefing, detailed the severe challenges facing Katsina State, and called for urgent Federal intervention.

In the statement, Mohammed said, “We have tried as much as possible and have complained severally to the Federal Government to complement what the State Government is doing to protect lives and property in our dear State. The Federal Government has not lived up to expectations. These hoodlums keep on killing our people, burning their properties, claiming their farms, and destroying their houses.”

KSEF lamented the dire situation, and expressed concerns over the safety of residents and travellers in the State. He, also, questioned the inaction of the two Ministers of Defence who are from the North.

“If you are travelling, you are not sure of coming back. If you leave home, you are not sure of coming back to meet your people safe. And it is really unfortunate that the so-called Defence Ministers are from the North. We don’t know what they are doing. They have not done enough to protect the North. And it is unfortunate that these killers are only in this part of the country. We are really disturbed.

“They have killed hundreds of people in Katsina. No body, none of the ministers or the president deemed it fit to come and condole the people of Katsina State and provide some succour to cushion the impact on the victims. That’s why you see a lot of beggars everywhere. This is as a result of this banditry.

“The Katsina State Governor has done his best. He floated the Security Watch Corps and they are doing their best. But unfortunately, the community corps are not allowed to handle sophisticated weapons like the bandits. The soldiers are not helping matters. So, we don’t know where the problem is. We are yet to understand the problem. What is happening? Who is behind this banditry? The Federal Government has to explain why our soldiers can go elsewhere in other countries and perform miracles, and restore peace, but not in the northern part of the country?

“We are calling on the Federal Government to come up with immediate measures. Let them introduce jungle battalions. Put these soldiers in the forest, let them remain there and fight the bandits. The bandits are known and they also know where they are. We are calling on Mr President to please save the North, for goodness sake. Save Katsina State,”

The Group further expressed strong reservations and disapproval over the alleged recent federal actions concerning LGBT rights purportedly signed by the Budget Minister.

Reacting, the forum said Katsina State vehemently objects to this arrangement because we are 98 percent Muslims. Even Christianity is against this same-sex marriage. We are begging Mr President to reverse this decision with immediate effect. Nigerians are not happy and everybody is crying.” The Government has strongly denied any such action.

On the severe poverty ravaging the Northern Region, Mohammed painted a bleak picture of widespread hunger and economic distress, and attributed it to the Federal Government’s alleged failure to provide basic necessities.

“Our people are very poor. There is hunger and abject poverty in our region. Everywhere you go, you see people begging because they don’t have what to eat,” he said.

He urged President Tinubu to take immediate action to tackle these issues and consider appointing more effective Advisers.

Again, Court Restrains Bayero, Four Others From Parading As Emirs

Ado Bayero

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

For the umpteenth time, Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu of a Kano State High Court on Monday July 15 ,2024  restrained Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, the 15th Emir of Kano, from further parading himself in the position.

Also affected by the restraining order are the Emirs of Gaya, Rano ,Karaye, and Bichi.

They were, on May 23, 2024, deposed by the Kano State Government on the strength of the 2024 Kano Emirates Laws ,which supplanted the 2019 Laws.

The enactment of the 2019 Emirates Law had paved the way for the dethronement of the 14th Emir of Kano Muhammad Sanusi, by the immediate past Governor of the state, Dr Abdullahi Umar Gandunje.

His deposition also led to the balkanization of the hitherto Kano Emirates into five.

However, the deposition of Emir Bayero has resulted in a plethora of litigations both from the Kano State Government and Emir Bayero’s camp.

For the very first time in recent memory, the series of legal battles has, also, resulted in the Kano Emirate hosting two Emirs at the same time.

While the Kano State Government- backed Emir Sanusi is occupying the City Palace, Emir Bayero is holding court at the Mini Palace in the Nasarawa area of the Kano Metropolis.

Both sides had, also, before now, recorded some legal victories that have in the main, guaranteed them hope in the royal stool tussle.

In one of the several suits filed by the Kano State Government, Justice Aliyu, on Monday, ordered that Emir Bayero, the four others, either by themselves, privies, servants, and/or any other appointed persons should henceforth stop parading themselves as Emirs of Kano,Gaya,Rano Karaye and Bichi.

The Source reports that this is not the first time same order has been issued .

Late May, 2024, Justice Aliyu, in the wake of the return of Emir Bayero to kano on May 25, after his  purported deposition, and a- 48 hour ultimatum to  leave the ancient city, issued an order baring the State Government from recognizing and dealing with him as Emir of Kano.

Monday’s ruling is in  respect of a motion on notice filed by the state Government seeking to stop the deposed Emir  Bayero and four others from parading themselves as Emirs having been lawfully deposed.

Governor Kefas Urged To Save PDP From Collapse In Taraba State

Agbu Kefas- Governor of Taraba State

By Akinwale Kasali

Disturbed by alleged high handedness and leadership style of Danladi Mohammed Gwampo, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Taraba State, over 50 Chieftains of the Party in the State have urged Governor Agbu Kefas to Wade in and rescue the Party from collapse in the State.

The Chieftains from Yorro Local Government Area of the State accused the Party Chairman of hijacking the Party’s operations in the area and running a one-man show, which they believe significantly contributed to the Party’s poor performance in recent elections.

In a petition addressed to the Governor, the chieftains including a serving Commissioner for Waste Management and Resource Innovation, Bernard Shonzon, the immediate past Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr David Ishaya, immediate past Chairman of the Local Government, Joseph Sanweri, other former Council Chairmen and Secretaries, former House of Assembly members, Commissioners and Councilors from the area who signed the petition, accused Danladi Gwampo of a deliberate move to hijack the party in the area for his gains.

It was also alleged by the petitioners that Gwampo’s autocratic style resulted in the loss by PDP of a crucial House of Assembly seat to the opposition in the last election.

The petition read in parts, “There are individuals who are desirous to join our party, but Gwampo, who hijacked the registration materials have vowed to stop them from registering as members of the party.

“Additionally, the party failed to secure a victory in a key House of Representatives by-election. Most strikingly, despite the over 90,000 registered voters in Yorro, the PDP managed to muster only about 15,000 votes for Governor Kefas in the last election and this has not happened before.

“Yorro has been a reference point for PDP winning streak in the local government areas in the northern zone, but we are losing out because of the leadership style of Gwampo.

“We want to call on Governor Kefas to intervene in the situation urgently. Gwampo’s actions have not only hurt the Party ’s performance but if not addressed, the party’s prospects for the upcoming 2027 elections could be jeopardized.”

They also want the Governor to direct the Council Chairmen and Ward Chairmen to accept new members without allowing the process hijacked by one man.

This is even as they said party activities should henceforth be conducted in the open and not at a private residence of an individual as is currently being done.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ambrose Alli University, (AAU), Ekpoma Chapter, has welcomed the constitution of a seven-member Governing Council for the university.

The Council is chaired by Dr. Omo-Ehijele Frank Odafen to  replace the Special Intervention Team (SIT), which has been running the university.

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki and Visitor to the institution had on Thursday, 11th July, 2024, in accordance with AAU Law 1999 (As Amended), announced the constitution of the Governing Council.

In a joint statement by Dr. Cyril Onogbosele and Dr. William Odion, the Chairman and Secretary, respectively of ASUU, AAU chapter, they remarked that the development marked a significant departure from what they insisted was the tumultuous reign of the SIT.

They stated that SIT  perpetuated a culture of crises and impunities that undermined the university’s autonomy and academic freedom.

Onogbosele and Odion alerted the council members of numerous problems the reign of SIT created, which they have to deal with such as unresolved administrative lapses and staff welfare issues in the university.

They listed the unbridled breach of the university’s autonomy in terms of procedural self-governance, substantive independence and academic freedom; lack of funding by the state government; and the absence of substantive principal officers (vice chancellor, registrar, bursar, librarian and provost) in the last three years.

The unionists also fumed at the arbitrary removal/replacement of elected deans of faculties; the non-payment of salaries/allowances of many staff; non-implementation of the award of 25 and 35 percent increase in the salaries of academic staff.

Following the expiry of a seven day dateline given to Governor Sim Fubara to represent the 2024 budget for deliberation and possible approval, the Rivers state House of Assembly led by Martins Amaewhule on Monday July 15 2024 embargoed any further expenditure by the executive arm.

The Source reports that the Pro-Wike Legislators had, on July 8 2024, given Governor Fubara seven days within which to represent the budget .

The Amaewhule – led 27 lawmakers are loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory FCT Nyesom Wike.

Their earlier defection from the Peoples Democratic Party PDP on which platform they were elected to the rival All Progressive Congress APC has since made their seats subject of ongoing legal battle.

Governor Fubara has insisted that his administration will not deal with them in matters concerning the state, as they are no longer members of the State Legislative Body.

The then Speaker Edison Ehie-led State Lawmakers ,had since passed the appropriation bill. Governor Fubara had since signed same into law.

Edison was, however, to become Governor Fubara’s Chief of Staff after the budget’s passage.

Rt Hon Victor Oko-Jumbo is now presiding over the State House of Assembly faction loyal to the Governor.

While their sittings are held inside the State seat of Power, the Speaker Amaewhule led Pro-Wike lawmakers conduct their activities at the State’s Legislative quarters.

The Assembly Complex is currently under going reconstruction ,after having some parts of it torched and vandalized in the early days of the political skirmishes between Pro-Wike and pro-Fubara forces.

The motion to bar the Governor Fubara-led Executive from access to the State’s Treasury was moved by the Majority Leader, Hon Major Jack during their sitting.

He drew the attention of the House to the expiry of the seven days ultimatum earlier given for the representation of the budget.

The motion was subsequently passed after deliberation by the 27 pro-Wike legislators.

The motion in effect has shut down the State Consolidated Revenue Account ,and also prevents the Executive arm from further accessing funds therefrom.

Governor Fubara has vowed never to represent the 2024 budget for consideration.

Citing bias by electoral umpire, opposition political parties in Osun state have pulled out of the forthcoming local government election in the State.

Those that announced their boycott include Labour Party, New Nigerian People’s Party, and other political parties which are members of the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC).

The election into the Local Councils in the State has been slated for February 22, 2025.

State Chairman of IPAC, Victor Akande, made the declaration while addressing journalists in Osogbo, Osun State Capital, on Monday.

The parties are protesting the alleged bias of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) in favour of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

IPAC accused OSSIEC of paving the way for electoral malpractices in the forthcoming election.

The body also raised concerns about the neutrality of OSSIEC Chairman, Ashim Abioye, who they claim is a former appointee of the current state government led by Governor Ademola Adeleke of the PDP.

Akande expressed disappointment that the Council has not received the necessary updates from the Commission ahead of the election, contrary to their expectations.

He further alleged that the PDP in Osun State is deliberately creating a crisis atmosphere to intimidate and discourage people from participating in the election.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu of Lagos State over the weekend read the riot act to residents who derive pleasure in littering drainages, remove and destroy manholes. He said a stop must be put to the bad habit.

Speaking at the Campos playground, Odunlami Street, Lagos Island, during the flagging off of a community-based environmental sanitation awareness programme, Governor Sanwo- Olu urged all residents to take action by prioritising environmental cleanliness in their daily lives.

He expressed dismay at the level of littering of drains observed while touring some streets on Lagos Island, and advised that it is high time all residents embraced good environmental habits to avoid any form of disease breakout in Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu, who was in the company of his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, also lamented that most of the manholes on some of the streets visited, have been removed and littered with refuse.

He said the awareness/sensitisation campaign will be taken round all the 57 Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas to ensure that the initiative is embraced by every member of the community while ensuring that Lagosians have access to a clean, safe, flood-free and sustainable environment.

Revealing that LAWMA officials would soon commence the distribution of waste bags and waste bins to tenements across the state to aid the proper bagging of refuse, he promised that a gang made up of officials of the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and the Environment would be constituted to tackle the issue of manhole removal.

He also hinted that he would lead the Members of the Executive Council every weekend to clean streets, neighbourhoods, desilt drainages and ensure evacuation of waste, saying the exercise would be a continuous culture before a decision is taken on the resumption of the Monthly Sanitation Exercise.

Sanwo-Olu said the occasion coincides with the annual Tree Planting Day celebrated globally on the 14th of July to encourage residents to embrace tree planting culture, stressing that trees are not just for beautification but to regulate temperature and mitigate the effects of climate change.

Tokunbo Wahab,  Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, said the awareness of the re-introduction of the Sanitation Exercise was pertinent to promote a clean and healthy environment, as well as encourage community participation in waste management to reduce the risk of disease outbreaks.

“As we all know the Monthly Environmental Sanitation was a culture in Lagos State some years back as such the awareness of the re-introduction of exercise in the State is going to be another bold step of the present administration”, he noted.

Wahab said with the government’s effort to create awareness and sensitise the citizens on the re-introduction of the exercise, all residents are encouraged to imbibe the culture of cleaning their homes, surroundings, and drainages in front of their tenements and streets. He added that the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) officials would always be on ground to collect bagged waste and dispose of it properly.

The event was witnessed by dignitaries including the Chairman, House Committee on the Environment, Hon Olanrewaju Afinnih; Special Adviser on the Environment, Engr. Kunle Rotimi-Akodu; Permanent Secretaries, Office of Environmental Services, Gaji Omobolaji Tajudeen and Drainage Services and Water Resources, Engr. Mahamood Adegbite.

Abia Workers Suspend Planned Industrial Action

NLC Strike

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Organized Labour’s  industrial action in  Abia State earlier scheduled to  begin on Monday, July 15, 2024 will no longer hold, according to the Leadership of the Workers Union

The Source reports that the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and its ally the Trade Union Congress, TUC, had, in a letter, addressed to the Abia State Governor last week, informed about the decision of the state workforce to embark on the strike to press home their demands for the implementation of the 2019 N30,000 minimum wage and the N35,000 wage award by the Federal Government effective July 15 .

However ,they maintained that the proposed strike action could be averted if meaningful negotiation could be initiated with the state authorities .

At a briefing on Sunday, July ,14, the Chairman of the State Chapter of the NLC, Comrade Okoro Ogbonnaya said the suspension of the industrial action is to give the State  Government time to give effect to the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding MoU it has entered with it .

The two Parties had been locked in a marathon negotiation all through Friday, July 13,  and Saturday, July 14, in Umuahia the State capital.

The NLC Chairman who said that MoU principally dwells on the two issues of 2019 minimum wage and the 2023 wage award, however, warned that it will resurrect the strike issue if the terms of the agreement are not met on or before July 28 ,.

The seven point MoU also captured the payments of the workers leave allowances in the last four years among others.

Comrade Ogbonnaya, therefore, called on Abia State Workers to resume at their various duty posts, while promising that the Organized Labour Leadership will continue to monitor the compliance level of the MoU.

He assured the workers of the commitment of the Labour Union leadership in protecting their interests and welfare.

The State TUC Chairman, Ihechi Eneogwe added that the Labour Leadership will work in  concert with the State Government to ensure that workers in the State get whatever are due to them.

IGP Egbetokun Orders Suspension Of Issuance Of Certificate To Vehicle Owners

Kayode Egbetokun - IGP

By Ayodele Oni

Coming few hours after it vowed to go ahead with the new vehicle registration, the Nigeria Police Force has announced the suspension of the enforcement of the electronic Central Motor Registry registration process (e-CMR) on vehicle owners.

The Force will now embark on educating vehicle owners on advantages of the scheme.

It also insisted that the scheme should not be seen as an opportunity to generate revenue by the force.

The Police had earlier announced that the enforcement would commence on July 29, which would have led to sanctions on vehicle owners who do not posses the e-CMR.

Nigerians had condemned the announcement and the Nigeria Bar Association, (NBA) gave the Police one week to rescind the decision.

Announcing the suspension in a statement on Sunday, police Spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, defended the decision of the Police to issue the certificate to vehicle owners who pay for it.

The statement reads: “Following the reconfiguration and commencement of the Electronic Central Motor Registry registration process (e-CMR), the Police has deemed it necessary to highlight the benefits and effectiveness of the e-CMR initiative.

“It is designed to ensure the safety and security of all types of vehicles including motorcycles by collating data imputed into the system by vehicle owners and acting on such to flag the vehicles if reported stolen.

“The e-CMR will provide a firsthand database to the Force for curbing vehicular crimes as dedicated officers can access real-time comprehensive data of every vehicle on their tablets.

“Similarly, the e-CMR will prevent multiple registration of vehicles and serve as a database to collate biometric and other data of vehicle owners and individuals.

“This will add value to the national database and incident report portal generated from other Ministries, Departments and Agencies towards general security.

“Furthermore, contrary to news making the round and insinuations about the e-CMR, the NPF wishes to state categorically that the e-CMR is not a revenue generating platform, but an initiative to digitalize policing for effectiveness and general safety of lives and property of Nigeria residents.

“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has ordered an immediate suspension of the proposed enforcement of the e-CMR initially scheduled to commence on the 29th of July, 2024.

“This is to give ample opportunity for mass enlightenment and education of all citizens and residents on the process, benefits and effectiveness in solving the challenge of vehicle related crimes, and protection of individual and corporate vehicle ownership.

“In light of this, we seek the understanding and support of all well-meaning Nigerians and residents to key into the e-CMR system.

“In the same vein, the IGP charges all Police officers to desist from requesting for e-CMR certificates.

“Individuals found extorting or exploiting members of the public on the guise of not having e-CMR certificates will be sanctioned accordingly as the enforcement will be done by only dedicated officers.”
