CNPP Condemns Threat to Life of Zenith Labour Party Chairman

Chief Dan Nwanyanwu

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has said it is alarmed and outraged by the brazen threat to the life of Chief Dan Nwanyanwu, the National Chairman of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP). This incident is a stark reminder of the escalating violence and intimidation tactics being employed by desperate politicians to silence opposition voices.

Chief Nwanyanwu, had at a press conference yesterday alleged threat to his life. According to him, the threat was made by one Moses Emmanuel, an alleged agent of former Governor of Rivers State and current Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The CNPP recalled that recently, the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) had raised the alarm over alleged intelligence it received indicating that there was a plot to fabricate charges of murder, rape, kidnap, gun-running, and other imagined crimes against the Member, representing Ideato Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, over his stance on Rivers State political crisis, defence of democracy and principles of decent intra-party procedures.

The CNPP in a statement signed by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Comrade James Ezema, called for a thorough investigation into the allegations raised by the ZLP National Chairman, urging all security agencies to protect Chief Nwanyanwu.

“The CNPP therefore condemned the in the strongest possible terms this cowardly act and warns those behind it to desist from further harassment and intimidation of political opponents. We demand that the security agencies investigate this incident thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“The use of extra-judicial means to gag opposition voices is a dangerous trend that must be stopped immediately. Nigeria is a democratic nation, and the freedom of expression and association are fundamental rights enshrined in our constitution. Political differences should be resolved through peaceful means, not through violence and intimidation.

“We stand in solidarity with Chief Dan Nwanyanwu and the Zenith Labour Party, and we urge all political parties and stakeholders to join us in condemning this heinous act. We will not stand idly by while our democracy is undermined by those who seek to suppress dissenting voices”, the CNPP vowed.

The umbrella association of all registered political parties and political associations in the country then called on “the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to take immediate action to ensure the safety and security of all political leaders and citizens.

“We also demand that the Inspector General of Police and the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS) order thorough investigation into this incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“We therefore call on all relevant security agencies to provide adequate security for the ZLP National Chairman to ensure he is not hurt”, the CNPP stated.

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State.:

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Court of Appeal,  Abuja Division,  has affirmed Senator Hope Uzodinma as the duly elected Governor of  Imo state in the November 11, 2023, off season gubernatorial election.

The second highest Court in the land dismissed the  separate appeals filed by Samuel Anyanwu and Achonu Nneji of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP and Labour LP respectively as lacking in merit

The duo of Anyanwu and Achonu had appealed against the earlier judgement of an Election petition Tribunal that declared Uzodinma as the winner of the election.

The Appeal Court unanimously held that the appeal lacked merit, having also resolved all the issues formulated against the the appellants.

Principally, the appellants had complained about the election being invalid on grounds of non- compliance with extant laws including the amended 2022 Electoral Act

The issue of Governor Uzodinma’s qualifications, particularly his WAEC Certificate, were also  part of the grounds for the appeal.

But the three -man panel of Justices of the Court led by the Honourable Justice Bitrus Sanga held that the appellants separately failed to substantiate their claims of Governor Uzodinma parading fake WAEC Certificate as well as non-compliance of the electoral processes with extant laws.

Uzodinma mercilessly defeated the two – Anyanwu and Achonu – in a landslide. He routed them in all the Local Governments of the State, including their own LGAs.

The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has warned the public to be wary of  fraudulent elements  using the name of the service to perpetrate their illegal activities.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by its National Spokesperson Abdullahi Aliyu Maiwada, the NCS said that the fraudsters have been exploiting public trust and ignorance to promote fictitious auctions and sham recruitment exercises supposedly endorsed by the Service.

“The attention of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has been brought to the escalating activities of fraudulent entities preying on unsuspecting individuals through social media platforms, falsely claiming association with the Service for purposes of auctions and recruitment.

“We Are Not Criminals, The Underaged Operators Are Portraying Us In Bad Light” – Abia Tricycle Operators Insist

Abia Tricycle Operators

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

Ahead of its August 1, 2024 date for the enforcement of restriction on the operating time for tricycle  and other commercial automobile operators, tricyclists in Aba, the commercial hub, have called for a review.

The Source reports that the Abia State Government had last month slammed a restriction order on the hours of operation for all tricycles, motorcycles  and mini bus commercial operators in the state, citing the need to curb rising wave of criminal activities in Aba and Umuahia as major reason.

Prince Uzor Nwachuukwu, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs said credible intelligence available to the Government has shown  that there have been an increased in the number of violent and other criminal activities in some major cities of the  state particularly Aba and Umuahia the state capital.

He noted that reports also indicated that the criminals  who majorly carry out their nefarious activities late on and early hours of the day, operate mostly with tricycles .

Prince Nwachukwu, informed that the State Authorities have, therefore, decided to restrict the operating time of the tricyclists to between 6.00am  and 7.00pm daily.

The initial commencement date of July 1,was canceled due to what the state Government said was to give the tricycle operators and other commercial automobile operators in the state enough time to comply with the registration processes required of all commercial tricycle and bus operators.

A new enforcement date was set for August 1, with the authorities warning of dare consequences for defaulters .

But the tricycle operators, under the aegis of Real Keke Operators Association Aba, REKOAA, on Tuesday July16, pleaded with the authorities to review the time of the restriction so as not to visit the sin of a tiny few  on the vast majority of the tricycle riders .

Chairman of the REKOAA ,Chimezie  Nwokejiobi, while briefing with the media after during a peace demonstration , noted that criminal activities involving some operators ,which informed the restriction order, can easily be handled if there is a synergy among the Keke riders Union, Government and security agencies.

According to him, the planned restriction of the operations of  tricyclists to between 6.00 am and 7.00pm,will further worsen the hardship already being faced by the operators owing to the harsh economic situation in the country.

The Tricycles Operators Chairman, warned that Aba, as a commercial enclave, cannot afford to go to sleep at 7.00 pm .

While applauding Governor Alex Otti for his infrastructural renewal efforts in the commercial nerve centre of the State, Nwokejiobi, however urged him to review the restriction policy in its present form, because it will tantamount  to punishing the majority of innocent people for a sin of a few.

“We know that the Governor means well for us. We know that he equally means well for Abians. We are aware that he has done much within the last one year to lift the state in all fronts? So we have to assist him to achieve all the good plans he has for the State.

“We are here today ( Tuesday July 16) to tell the Government and the good people of Abia state that we are not criminals and are not in support of any criminal activities being perpetrated  by those underage criminal elements masquerading as tricycle operators .

“They (underaged Keke riders)  are portraying us in bad light before the public. These boys would spend their day smoking ,taking illicit and   dangerous substances, relaxing in betting shops in the day, only to come out at night to snatch people’s  bags and other valuables. We can no longer allow that to continue” the Chairman stated.

FG Not Handing Over Universities To Private Investors – Minister

0
Prof Tahir Mamman - Minister of Education

By Ayodele Oni

The Federal Government has revealed plans to throw open Universities for global competitiveness rather than outright sale.

The Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, explained that this will allow those who operate in this area at international level to come into the country and set up institutions open for collaboration with local universities under guidelines of what is called trans-national education.

The Minister denied reports that it is selling off public Universities to private investors.

He pointed out that there has been misinformation on one aspect of the Ministry’s policy in respect to tertiary education.

The Minister who stated this during a meeting with Heads of agencies, parastatals and directors at the ministry of education in Abuja, on Tuesday said, “This is an absolute lie and completely false.”

“This Government believes in the provision of Government institutions and has not shied away from the force that the government needs from the private sectors.

“For decades now, private sectors have played a major role in the provision of tertiary education and there are more private universities in Nigeria than public universities combined.

“What the Government has done is to open up the tertiary education level in particular, the universities for global competitiveness that allow those who operate in this area at international level to come into the country and set up institutions open for collaboration with our local universities under guidelines of what is called trans-national education.”

He stated that other parts of the world have benefitted from having international institutions setting up campuses or new institutions in those countries, which have taken standards in those countries.

“They have also saved those countries foreign exchange and brought more money into the country and that is what the government has done.

“It has opened up tertiary education so that people from the rest of the world can invest in our tertiary institutions system. Government is not parting with any of its institutions.”

The Minister, however, emphasized that the meeting is very important to assess their mileage, the direction taken in the implementation of key policies and review progress, possible challenges and also reaffirm commitment to overcome all the challenges.

As part of the deal between Nigeria and United Arab Emirates, (UAE), before the lifting of visa restriction, a total of 190 Nigerians have been repatriated by the Federal Government from the UAE.

According to a statement by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), signed by its Director General, North Central Zone, Bashir Garga, on Tuesday, the returnees were received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja at 5:57 am by a combined team of Government officials led by NEMA.

NEMA said the returnees have been profiled and documented by the relevant agencies, and sensitised to “behave with decorum and responsibility” on their return to Nigeria.

“The Federal Government urges all Nigerians, wherever they may be, to act as exemplary ambassadors of their country, upholding the fundamental values of patriotism, rule of law, decency and integrity.”

It would be recalled that the Federal Government also repatriated a total of 542 from UAE in October 2022.

Rights Group Takes Abuja Indigenous Peoples’ Issues To UN

Zikirullahi Ibrahim

By Akinwale Kasali

Rights Group, Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education, CHRICED, has taken the case of Abuja indigenous Peoples to the United Nations, UN.

Speaking at the UN Switzerland office, the CHRICED Executive Director, Zikirullahi Ibrahim, urged the world to come to the aid of indigenous peoples in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

The event was the 17th session of the Expert Mechanism for the Rights of Indigenous Peoples held at the Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland on Monday, July 9, 2024

He listed socio-economic and political exclusion as some of the challenges that currently faced.

Ibrahim said his Group was honored to be at the event thanks to the generous support of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

It would be recalled that on July 18, 2023, the group presented the case of over 2.5 million indigenous people, known as Abuja Original Inhabitants (OIs) of Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT), consisting of nine tribes and seventeen chiefdoms, who are facing challenges of landlessness, statelessness, and the extinction of their culture.

He said CHRICED stressed that without rectifying the injustice done to them, their future remains very bleak.

He said following that event, there have been some positive developments, including the appointment of an Abuja native as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (for the first time), the appointment of a native youth as a Mandate Secretary for Area Council Secretariat, the establishment of FCT Civil Service Commission, and the creation of FCT Women Affairs Secretariat.

He said while the group acknowledges the progress made, it is disheartening to note that almost all the Principal Officers of the new governance structures created are non-natives and, therefore, may not represent the interests of the Abuja indigenous people.

“It is unfortunate that, to this day, most of the indigenous people whose land was taken by Military Decree 6 of 1976 for the establishment of the new capital territory have not been compensated or resettled. Instead, the demolition of their settlements has intensified, leading to increased homelessness in the name of development expansion,” Zikirullahi said.

He argued that the Nigerian Government has failed to uphold its commitments to respect and protect the rights of the Abuja indigenous people.

CHRICED said presently, many indigenous communities in Abuja still lack access to essential health and educational facilities, as well as basic infrastructure such as roads, clean water, and sanitation.

According to him, unlike other Nigerian citizens who have the right to vote for a Governor and a State House of Assembly, the indigenous people of Abuja are still denied this political right, despite being citizens of their own country.

“The Nigerian government has ignored the pleas of the Abuja natives regarding the discrimination and injustices they face, even disregarding Supreme Court rulings in their favor.

“As if the injustice done to the Abuja indigenous people by their own government was not enough, the Switzerland Embassy has again added to their pains by the consistent refusal to grant visa appointment for them to attend the EMRIP event.”

He told the world body that despite receiving registration approval late in May 2024 from the EMRIP Secretariat, the Swiss Government should have shown understanding due to the significance of this UN annual event.

“We hold that the refusal is not only against the principles of free movement for indigenous people as guaranteed by the United Nations, but also hinders the opportunity for the Abuja natives to showcase their culture and artefacts on a global platform. It is important for the EMRIP Secretariat to address this issue diplomatically with the Swiss government.”

Ibrahim, however, urged the UN to amplify the voices and struggles of the indigenous people in Abuja, Nigeria, through diplomatic intervention.

He said “We demand a STOP to the violation of their rights to belonging, history and legacy. Nigeria must be held accountable to fulfill its constitutional and international human rights obligations promptly to address the challenges faced by the indigenous peoples in Abuja.”
