Federal Government Workers may not wait for the stand of the Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC) on the proposed new minimum wage as they have resolved to embark on nationwide protest to press home their demands.

They accused the present administration of not fulfilling payment of wage award occasioned by the sudden withdrawal of fuel subsidy.

In a communique at the end of their virtual meeting, the workers resolved that “The Federal Government should pay up the arrears of wage award for the months of March, April and May within 72 hours else Federal Government workers nationwide will embark on a continuous mass protest.”

The communique, signed by  Andrew Emelieze, National Coordinator (FWF), stated that “₦62,000 minimum wage proposal is no way near a living wage, hence it is totally rejected by the Federal workforce.

“That we have heard from Mr President concerning the new national minimum wage and that the NLC/TUC has nothing to wait for order than to immediately resume the suspended indefinite national strike.

“That on Monday 24th June 2024, if the outstanding three months wage award arrears is not paid, federal workers should commence continuous mass protest in all federal government secretariats across the federation.

“There are many more outstanding arrears of payment owed the federal workers by the federal government, all these must be considered including promotion arrears and the recent 25% / 35% pay adjustments for some public sector workers.

“We the federal workers are ready for another round of indefinite national strike and protest, labour should not hesitate to take action if the federal government continues to remain adamant in paying a living wage.

“Federal workers have suffered enough, it is now very difficult for us to cope, we urge the federal government to reason with us.

“The Federal Government and President Tinubu should put themselves in the shoes of the Federal workers and stop promoting poverty among workers with poor pay.”

Minister Assures On Development Of Fish Market In Ilaje, Ondo To International Level

Ayodele Olawande - Minister of State for Youth Development

By Ayodele Oni

Elated by the high economic activity at the popular Ilaje fish market in Ondo State, the Minister of State for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has assured that the market would be developed to meet protein demand not only in Nigeria but in Africa.

The Minister explained that the ‘one LGA one product’ initiative is aimed at advancing the most dominant economic activity in each local government area to create jobs and sustainable livelihood especially for economically active youths at the grassroots.

The Minister stated this at the weekend when he paid a working visit to one of the biggest fish markets in Nigeria situated in Ilaje, Ondo State. He appraised the huge potential of the market and applauded the founder for his foresight.

Olawande, who could not hide his excitement with the level of economic activities going on at the market and the number of youth engaged, said he was proud that his vision to reduce youth unemployment, especially at the grassroots, is already taking root in Ondo State.

“I’m proud this is happening in Ondo. I believe, firmly, that we cannot address unemployment by simply driving interventions in the urban centers alone, which in most cases benefit only the educated formal youth.

“I believe we must do our utmost to carry the informal youth in our local communities along by factoring them into all our job creation plans.

“Almost all our local government areas have one outstanding product or economic mainstay.

“We must harness the peculiar and comparative economic activity in each local government area to create jobs, which is the thinking behind the ‘1 LGA, 1 Product’ initiative.”

The Minister, assured of his commitment to facilitate the required support and collaborations that would improve the productive capacity of Ilaje Fish market and enable it to fully take advantage of the surging protein demand in Nigeria and across Africa.

“I Am Not Owing You” – Gov Otti To Agitating ABSU Staff, As Criminals See Hell In Aba, Umuahia

Alex Otti - Governor of Abia State

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Abia State Government has said that the staffers of Abia State University Uturu, like other members of the State workforce, are up to date in the payments of their salaries and other emoluments.

There has been disquiet within the University community and a few other extra- ministerial establishments over alleged non payment of their salaries.

But in his monthly interactive session with the Media Friday evening, June 21, 2024, Governor Alex Otti, insisted that the Abia State University Workers, as well as others in the State, have been receiving their monthly wages as at, and when due since the inception of his administration in May, 2023.

“As at today, (Friday June 21), every member of staff of Abia State University has received his/her salaries up to date. Anyone who has not received may be having issues with his/her bank.

He revealed that as a matter of policy, his administration has been intentional in ensuring that all legitimate members of the State workforce receive their monthly salaries promptly and regularly.

Governor Otti had during the one year anniversary  of his administration on May 29, 2024, emphasised the  imperativeness of prompt and regular payments of salaries as an integral and important component of the wider blueprint of his administration to fast track the growth and development of the State’s economy.

“When you put money in the hands of those who will spend it within, you are boosting the economy. That is why in Abia, we are putting money in the hands of those who will spend/ invest it in the state and not those who will take it abroad.

“We have said that never again, will a labourer be owed his legitimate wages in Abia under our watch, unlike what obtained in the past .

“It was part of our promises during the electioneering campaigns and we have kept faith with the promise”, the Governor stated .

While speaking on the security sector, Otti asserted that his administration from inception prioritized the provision of a strong security architecture, and has so far worked assiduously with security agencies to ensure adequate protection of lives and property in Abia State

Specifically, he announced that his administration is collaborating with security agencies to ensure that those behind the infamous and dastardly killings of five Nigerian soldiers  at Obikabia junction on May 30, 2024, are rounded up and brought to justice accordingly.

“On security, all of us are aware that this Government takes security seriously. Unfortunately, there was a breach on May 30.

“We all know the story. But the most important thing we have to say is that we will ensure that everyone who was involved in the murder of those five soldiers must be brought to book.

“I have visited the families of the deceased. I have placed a bounty on the heads of the perpetrators and we are making progress. Suffice it to say that nobody connected with this crime will go unpunished.

“We are getting reports on criminal activities within Aba and Umuahia. So far, we have given enough warning and this time, we are not warning anyone again.. From this night (Friday night) you will see what will happen. Our resolve is stronger than ever” Governor noted.

“We Will Encourage You To Climb, Dont Be Afraid” – Uzodimma To Chief Promoter Of Owerri Central Market Complex

Hope Uzodimma on Owerri Central Market Complex

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has said that the Owerri Central Market Complex cited along Port Harcourt Road, Owerri,  will be a source of blessing to Imo State and Nigeria at large when completed.

Governor Uzodimma made the remarks on Friday during the ground breaking ceremony of the market project at Umuohiadagu Umualum in Nekede area of Owerri.

Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was the Special Guest of Honour at the event and led the ground breaking ceremony with Governor Uzodimma.

The Imo State Governor regretted that the construction of the Owerri Central Market Complex was stalled for a very long time as a result of many challenges, including illegal balkanization of the land.

He said in the wisdom of the government, a Commission of Enquiry was set up which led to the recovery of the land, noting that going forward, government will play its role not to betray the confidence of those who have elected to invest in the project.

The Governor further noted that the project is a product of Foreign Direct Investment, “as the investors are coming with money from outside Nigeria to invest in it,” insisting that “it is the responsibility of government and people of Imo State to provide enabling environment for them.”

“And that we shall do,” he promised, maintaining that “consequent upon that, all illegal construction that will stand as obstruction to this project will be removed.”

He thanked former President Obasanjo for continuously having the interest of the country at heart and for the support he has always shown to Imo State, through successive Governments.

While appreciating Imo people who trooped out in their numbers to show solidarity with the project, the Governor encouraged the Chief Promoter of the project, Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu, to remain resolute, as the State government will support the efforts. “We will encourage you to climb. Don’t be afraid, we will support you.”

Earlier in his address, President Obasanjo said with the assurances the Governor had given to the team, “the promoters can now go out in full force to look for investors who will bring money for the development.”

Obasanjo said he is confident that the money invested will be recouped through profit from the investment.

He noted that the project was well planned by a committee of international standard, disclosing that “the Owerri Central Market Complex has been planned in a way that when completed, it will attract business men and women from across the country and beyond, as there will be facilities, variety, opportunity, prosperity, security, among others.”

“So whoever wants to come will have a sense of participation, belonging and security. It will be opportunity to create jobs, wealth, harmony, unity and development for Imo State and Nigeria at large.”

Obasanjo described Owerri as the Eastern Heartland and recalled how Nigerian troops, under his command during the Nigeria/ Biafra war, needed to conquer Owerri, to conclusively bring the civil war which he said was necessary to unite the country, to a conclusive end.

In their separate but similar remarks, Nze Chukwu as the promoter of the project and the Commissioner for Trade, Commerce and Investment, Barr. Rex Anunobi thanked Governor Uzodimma for his untiring effort to see Imo State experience development in all areas and expressed confidence that the Owerri Central Market Complex will change the business and commercial outlook of Imo State when completed.

Deputy Governor of Imo State, Lady Chinyere Ekomaru, Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Chike Olemgbe, Senators Ezenwa Onyewuchi (Owerri zone), Patrick Ndubueze (Okigwe Zone), former Governor Ikedi Ohakim, Majority Leader of the Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Dele Onyemaechi, Deputy Chairman, South of APC, Chief Emma Enukwu, Chairman of Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze EC Okeke, top government officials, captains of industries, heads of religious bodies in Imo State, among others attended the occasion.

Alert On Imo Kidnappings:  Handiwork Of Mischief Makers – Police

0
Henry Okoye

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Imo State Police Command has reassured of its commitment towards properly securing the State, as well as ensuring peace and security.

This is just as it, on Friday, June 21, 2024, dismissed as unfounded and clearly misleading a recent security alert call suggesting that there is an upsurge in kidnappings and other criminal activities in some parts of Imo State.

A statement issued by the Command’s Spokesman, Henry Okoye, attributed the false security alert to the handiwork of mischief makers out to create panic and erode public trust in the ability of security agencies to protect law abiding citizens and residents of the State.

The Source reports that in the last two days some  nebulous entities have been issuing social media statements warning residents and visitors alike to be wary of Avu and Obinze areas of the state.

Some of the warning notes mentioned how kidnappers and  other criminal elements have been  abducting travelers and others along the Port Harcourt/Owerri road indiscriminately.

“The Command views this recent publication as the  handiwork of mischief makers who are trying to create unwarranted panic, negativity and palpable fear in the minds of Imolites

“We assure residents that we have been working tirelessly to ride the areas and the entire state of all forms of crimes and criminality

“We urge the citizens and residents of the  state ,particularly those living in the Avu and Obinze communities to disregard the publications and go about their normal daily businesses and activities without fear of harm and or molestation

“We are committed to making sure that all roads and areas in the state are safe for Imolites .We encourage well meaning citizens to  assist the Command with relevant information that will help to achieve a crime-free Imo State”  the   Police stated.

For Deliberately Omitting His Picture In 2024 Calendar, Fubara Sacks Rivers Traditional Council Chairman

0
Siminalayi Fubara - Governor of River State
Governor Similanayi Fubara

By Adesina Soyooye

A sure-footed Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has sacked the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers.

His Royal Highness, Eze Ohna Sergeant Chidi Awuse, is the Paramount Ruler of Emohuo Kingdom, and a very close friend and political ally of the immediate past Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

Awuse, a one-time Governorship Candidate in the State, combined his rulership of his Kingdom with the high profile position of the Chairman, Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers. But on Friday, June 21, 2024, Awuse was stripped of his Chairmanship position.

In sacking Awuse from the position during a special meeting Governor Fubara had with members of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers at the Banquet Hall of Government House Port Harcourt,  the Governor accused him of incompetence. He said Awuse is not capable of running the affairs of the Council. Awuse, Fubara noted, has neither been able to promote cordial relationship amongst the Tra Council members nor provided “effective leadership.”

But worse, the Governor accused Awuse of being disrespectful to the Rivers State Government, the office of the Governor, and that of the Deputy Governor.

One example, among others: The Governor said that Awuse insulted the Government, the Governor and the Deputy Governor by deliberately not using their photographs in the 2024 Calender of the Council of Traditional Rulers. The leadership of Awuse, the Governor insisted, would never meet any expectations.

Putting all that into consideration, Fubara, with immediate effect, replaced Awuse with the Paramount Ruler of Apara Kingdom, Eze Chike Worlu Wodo.

Fubara: “I want the Council to live up to its responsibility. From my observation, the Council is moribund. So, I can feel that the Council, for a while now, has been very inactive. Inactive because, maybe, the Chairman has decided not to be responsible as a Chairman. I think that is the best way to describe it.

“I am not talking about other things that have been happening. But I feel there are responsibilities of the Chairman, and so far, I have not felt it and you can also attest to that, that you are not seeing that leadership that you expect.

“I would like to draw your attention to a special insult that was meted to this Government. The Council produced a Calendar for the year of our Lord 2024, and the Governor’s picture and the Deputy Governor’s picture are not in the calendar.

“I want to ask you: does it show any sign that, that leadership is working with this Government? I hope you have a copy of it. Does it show that your Chairman is working with this Government?

“So, I have decided today, we have to move forward. By the special grace of God, the administrative life-span of the Chairman is one year, which is renewable. So, at this particular time, I have to say that with the power vested in me, I announce that the tenure of Chief Sergeant Awuse has been terminated.

“So, going forward, there is a need to have a leadership that will accommodate everybody and move this council forward.

“Let me, before saying other things, announce here that the new Chairman from this particular moment will be Eze Chike Worlu Wodo, Eze Ohna Apara, Paramount Ruler of Apara Kingdom. He will be the Chairman, of Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, and I believe strongly that he is going to do better and accommodate everyone.

“Traditional Rulers are the closest to our locals. If you want peace in the community, we must work with the Traditional Rulers. And our Government is a Government that pays serious priority to peace. So, I want every one of you to ensure that we maintain peace in our localities.

“Let me request from our new Chairman that: please, as we leave here, there is every need for you to call for a meeting immediately and commence the process of uniting the council.

“I am not bothered or interested in your political affiliations, but when it comes to issues of the Council, that should bring you together, your decision should, and must flow in the direction of Government.

“If you are doing anything outside, that is your own, but you cannot, I repeat that when it comes to the issues of the Council, the Government has given you recognition to belong, you cannot go against the Government, it’s very wrong.

“You can be in whatever it is, but when it comes to our own interest as a State and Government, you must work with our interest. I remember when we went to Ahoada-East, in Ekpeye land to perform an activity, a former Governor openly threatened one of you and warned that if you try it, I will do this, I will do that.

“But I am not going to warn any of you because you are our fathers. I will appeal to you to please give us all the necessary support and cooperation so that we can have a united State that every one of us will be proud of.

“Let me appeal to every one of us, today is an opportunity that God has provided to Eze Chike Worlu Wodo. Tomorrow, it can be any other person’s. You need to give him the respect. You need to give him the support to succeed; so that when it comes to your turn, that same measure will be given to you.”

Not  a few people agree that the former Chairman was caught in the crossfire between Fubara and his estranged political godfather, Wike.

Said one of the Traditional Rulers: “Our former Chairman was unable to draw the line between his relationship with Wike and his role as the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers. His loyalty was to Wike and not to the Rivers State  Government. His removal is in order.”

Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah has put smile into faces of law students who are indigenes of the state as he approved bursaries in the sum of N44.1m for them

Not less than 294 indigenes of the state currently studying at the seven campuses of the Nigerian Law School across the country are to benefit.

Of the total beneficiaries, which were drawn from the 17 Local Government Areas of Enugu State, 284 have already been verified and paid the sum of N150,000 each as part of government’s support and effort to accelerate human capital development in the state.

Another beneficiary from the gesture is Chidiogo Igwebuike, a student of the Nigerian College of Aviation, Zaria, who got scholarship in the sum of N12m to train as a pilot.

The National Association of Enugu State Law Students, described the gesture as an auspicious intervention, especially against the backdrop of the challenging economic realities of the country, and commended the governor for his vision and commitment to educational development in the state.

In a letter by the National President of the Association, Stephen Obiora; the National Secretary, Johnpaul Obisike; and the National Public Relations Officer, Uzoamaka Aguoma, they pledged to make the state proud.

“This bursary has come at the right time to alleviate the financial challenges the entire country is facing at this time, giving us room to focus on our court and chamber attachments without too much worry about the current state of the economy.

“Your commitment to education and youth development is truly commendable. Your support is a testament to your administration’s dedication to empowering Enugu State indigenes and investing in our dear state’s future and progress.

“We appreciate you for believing in us. We look forward to making Enugu state proud,” they stated.

The governor had in May awarded scholarship in the sum of N23.3m to Master Israel Echezona, a 17-year old indigene of Mgbagbu-Owa, Enugu State, who emerged the overall best candidate in the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology entrance examination, to also enable him train as a pilot.

PSC Accuses IGP Of Gross Violation Of Public Service Rules

Kayode Egbetokun and Solomon Arase2

By Gideon Njoku

As the spat between the Police Service Commission, PSC, and the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, over the recruitment of 10,000 Police Constables continues unabated, the Commission has accused the Inspector General of Police, Dr Kayode Egbetokun  of a gross violation of Public Service Rules, PSR, and said such violation has consequences.

The two institutions have been at loggerheads over whose brief it is to recruit Police Constables.

Recruitment of Police Personnel, as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution, is domiciled in/with the PSC.  However, for harmony, and in realisation of the fact that it is the NPF that would train those recruited, Recruitments have always been done by the PSC in conjuction with the NPF and other relevant stakeholders including the Federal Character Commission. And, it is the NPF Medical Unit which handles the medical and physical screening of candidates and declares them fit or not.

For years, however, the NPF has consistently sought to hijack the exercise, a situation which led to a legal  tussle, and finally settled by the Supreme Court in favour of the PSC.

The SC ruling notwithstanding, the NPF raised the ante in the recent recruitment by inexplicably rubbishing the exercise it undertook with the PSC and other stakeholders. It distanced itself from the list of successful candidates released by the PSC, a product of the joint exercise, and insisted on its own seperate list.

The controversy worsened when the NPF accused the PSC, without proof, of corruption in the exercise. Not a few people were shocked at the brazeness of NPF, especially, as the Chairman of the PSC at the time of the recruitment was Dr. Solomon Arase, one of the best and most respected IGPs the NPF has ever had.

The NPF’s stand was met with reactions which came like claps of thunder from many quarters. A couple of days ago, the PSC Workers Union, asked President Bola Tinubu to sack the IGP from office over the recruitment.

But in its first official response to the NPF allegations over the recruitment exercise, the PSC, in a statement signed by Ikechukwu Ani, its Head, Press and Public Relations, dated June 21, 2024, said it found the allegations against the PSC, as are contained in an NPF statement, “uncharitable and preposterous”.

Said the statement: “The assertion of recruiting persons who will commit suicide and who are deaf and dumb is uncharitable and preposterous. During recruitment exercises, the physical and medical screenings are handled by Police Personnel, so if deaf and dumb persons and those with suicidal tendencies are recruited into the Force, then the Police Personnel who screened and recommended them should be held responsible.”

The Commission insists in the release that its list of successful candidates and that of the NPF be subjected  to a forensic audit using the result of the JAMB computer-based test.

It also accused the IGP of making public a confidential letter he wrote to the PSC Chairman on the recruitment  exercise and categorised the IGP’s action as a breach of the Public Service Rules which has consequences.

Explaining why the Police is hell bent on running the PSC and the already concluded recruitment down, the PSC statement noted: “The Commission is aware that this current brazen show of power by the Police with attendant spurious allegations is to perpetuate their stranglehold on the recruitment of Constables, even against the judgement of the Supreme Court.”

Following is the full text of the PSC response.

2022 POLICE CONSTABLE RECRUITMENT: OUR POSITION  – PSC

The Police Service Commission has watched with keen  interest developments since it concluded and released the list of successful candidates for recruitment as Constables into the Nigeria Police Force.

The Commission is disturbed at the flagrant abuse of ethics, the Constitution and valid judgment of the apex court of the land.

The Commission wishes to state as follows;

  1. That the release of the confidential letter sent to the Chairman of the Commission by the Inspector General of Police on alleged lapses in the recruitment exercise to the Media was a gross violation of the Public Service Rules with grave Consequences.
  2. That since 2019, when a former Inspector General of Police hijacked the soft copy of an ongoing recruitment exercise and forcefully completed the exercise without the input of the Commission – the statutory body solely charged with such responsibility, the Commission has not been allowed to perform this constitutional duty.
  3. The Commission has at every turn suffered several indignities in its attempt to perform functions provided to it by the Constitution even after the Supreme Court decided the matter in its favour.
  4. That this show of brute force and intimidation by the Police and most recently inducements of hired writers to run down the Commission in the Media is a serious affront on the mandate of the Commission.

The Commission has studied the issues around this successfully concluded recruitment exercise and has come to the conclusion that even after the Supreme Court Judgment, the Police is reluctant to allow the Commission perform this constitutional assignment. The Commission demands that the Police should provide verifiable evidence  to prove the allegations peddled against it as it is obvious that it is a case of giving a dog a bad name in order to hang it.

It is important to state that due process was meticulously followed  throughout the exercise and the Commission wishes to assert its prerogative to exercise full control over recruitments into the Nigeria Police Force.

The Commission is also insisting that its list of successful candidates and that of the Police should be subjected to a forensic audit using the result of the JAMB computer based test.

The Supreme Court Judgment delivered on 11th July 2023 in the case of NPF & Ors v Police Service Commission & Anor (2023) – LPELR-60782(SC) reinforces the Commission’s  “exclusive” statutory authority in the recruitment of Constables.

The Supreme Court affirmed the Court of Appeal judgment delivered on the 30th September, 2020.

The Appeal Court among other decisions gave an order of “Perpetual  injunction restraining  the Defendants, jointly  or severally, by themselves or through Officers, agents or representatives or  through any other body or appointee of of the Federal  Government  of Nigeria from further exercising or purporting to exercise the powers to appoint, promote, dismiss or in any manner howsoever exercise disciplinary control over persons holding or aspiring to hold any office in the Nigeria  Police Force other than the Inspector General of Police. It also gave an Order nullifying any act or attempt by the Defendants whether acting jointly or severally in appointing or purporting to appoint any person into 1st Defendant whether by means of enlistment, shortlisting, recognition   recruitment or in any other manner howsoever, such act or attempt being ultra vires the functions and powers of the Defendants.

It also gave a declaration “that any act or attempt by the Defendants in appointing, recruiting and/or shortlisting for appointment, persons aspiring to hold any office in the Nigeria Police Force except  the Office of the Inspector-General of Police amounts to unlawful and unjustified usurpation  of the exclusive constitutional and statutory functions and powers of the Plaintiff and accordingly null and void and of no effect whatsoever.”

In this judgment, there was no role assigned to any person or persons outside the Commission in the conduct of recruitment and as such, any claim to that effect is serious contempt of Court.

The Commission however had, in its wisdom, invited relevant stakeholders into a Board for the recruitment exercise to ensure inclusiveness and transparency. This magnanimity has since been misconstrued. It is relevant to state that the judgment and even the Constitution did not give the Police any role in the recruitment of any cadre of Officers into the Police Force.

It is unfortunate that the Police has attributed its obvious failure to protect lives and properties, and safeguard our nation from banditry and terrorism to bad  recruitment. This claim is self indicting and provocative.  Since 2019 when the Police forcefully snatched the exercise from the Commission, they have gone ahead against the provisions of the law to Superintendent over the 2020 and 2021 exercises. It is the fraudulent Recruits they brought into the system during these exercises that are currently haunting the Nigeria Police Force.

The Commission is aware that this current brazen show of power by the Police with attendant spurious allegations is to perpetuate their stranglehold on the recruitment of Constables, even against the judgment of the Supreme Court.

The assertion of recruiting persons who will commit suicide and who are deaf and dumb is uncharitable and preposterous. During recruitment exercises,  the physical and medical screenings are handled by Police personnel, so if deaf and dumb persons and those with suicidal tendencies are recruited into the Force, then the Police personnel who screened and recommended them should be held responsible.

The Commission is aware that all these distractions are calculated attempts by the Police to hold on, by all means, to the recruitment of Police Constables despite the Supreme Court Judgment.

The Commission wishes to appeal to Mr. President to protect it and rein in the Nigeria Police Force to respect the Constitutional Mandate of the Commission to recruit. The Nigeria Police Force is created to enforce the law and not to circumvent it in whatever guise.

It is the considered opinion of the Commission  that the successful  candidates should be allowed to proceed on training without delay.

FG Mulls Special Tribunal To Try Electricity Thieves

0
Adebayo-Adelabu

The federal government says plan is ongoing to establish a special tribunal to try those who illegally use electricity in the country.

The tribunal will also be empowered to speedily dealt with other power-related offences, such as, power infrastructure vandalism, amongst others.

Aliyu Tahir, the Managing Director, Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency, NEMSA, made this known on Thursday in Abuja while speaking to journalists.

Many Nigerians are believed to be stealing electricity for use in their homes and offices by by-passing metres provided by electricity distribution companies, Discos.

According to checks, many users of electricity in the country don’t even have metres, making it difficult for electricity companies to generate enough funds to invest in critical infrastructure to develop the sector.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu recently lamented that the dearth of revenue by power firms in the country could lead to total collapse of the sector.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, claimed that 609,585 electricity consumers were metered by the end of last year, while the number of unmetered registered power users nationwide stood at 7,319,846.

Speaking yesterday on how the federal government intended to tackle the problem of electricity theft and other problems facing the power sector, Tahir said a tribunal with the power to prosecute offenders of these offences would soon be set up.

He said the agency is currently interacting with the National Assembly to amend the Electricity Act to accommodate the tribunal.

Tahir said, “We are looking at the establishment of this electricity tribunal to be able to enforce our mandates more. When you look at the enforcement, concerning sanctioning of violators in the Act, it is a very long process.

“So to fast-track the prosecution of offenders, the establishment of this tribunal solely for the power sector will go a long way in ensuring that we fast-track the process, carry out enforcements and sanction violators.

“The establishment of this tribunal has been brought to the knowledge of the legislature and we’ve made submissions to them. We hope that they will amend the Electricity Act to include a provision for this.”

No fewer than 37 deaths have been recorded in the current Cholera outbreak, which has hit 30 states, including Lagos and Ogun.

The Lagos state government has announced that the death tool from the cholera outbreak in the state has risen to 21.

The revelation was made on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, Dr Kemi Ogunyemi, in a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs in the state ministry.

The statement comes amidst fear that the disease has spread to more than 30 states in the country.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDCP, put the number of persons that have died from the disease at 37.

Presenting the situation report in the state yesterday, Ogunyemi stated that the state is one of the epicentres of the disease, with the Lagos Island being the most affected.

So far, the state has recorded close to 400 cases and 21 deaths, according to details provided by the government.

Part of the statement: “Following the last update on the cholera outbreak in Lagos, which reported 350 suspected cases and 15 fatalities, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, Dr Kemi Ogunyemi, disclosed that the total number of cholera cases has increased to 401 across Lagos, with Lagos Island, Kosofe, and Eti Osa recording the highest numbers.

“Dr Ogunyemi revealed this today while providing an update on the outbreak after meeting with members of the Lagos State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre. She added that the death toll had also risen to 21, an increase of six from the previously reported 15 fatalities.”

Ogunyemi further stated that the recent upsurge of the disease in the state is due to the large gatherings during the recent Eid el Kabir celebration.

Meanwhile, educational institutions in the state have made the use of face mask mandatory for primary and secondary schools as a way of preventing further spread of the disease.
