CAPPA Launches Healthy Food Policy

0

By Akinwale Kasali

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa, CAPPA, is insistent on promoting healthy living among Nigerians. To this end, it
has inaugurated the Healthy Food Policy Youth Vanguard, HFPYV, programme with a youth-focused public health and food justice advocacy.

At a two-day event held in Lagos, CAPPA trained and inducted no fewer than 28 young Nigerians as HFPYV pioneers from across the country.

Akinbode Oluwafemi, CAPPA’s Executive Director, stated that the HFPYV is designed to equip youths to promote healthy lifestyles and resist attempts by corporations to–through food and dietary products or practices–jeopardize public health.

He emphasised that HFPYV is particularly youth-focused because young people’s dietary and lifestyle choices are the target of corporations that prioritise profits over health.

He said: “We take on campaigns that are targeted at the youth. Today, if you look at the food justice campaign, you’ll find out that the most targeted group are the youth. When you look around, look at their adverts, you’ll see that they are targeted at the youth.

“Digital and social media have become one major tool that they use and have been using for this recruitment of consumers, and who are the most active on those platforms? They’re the youths.

“So, it behoves on us too as we embark on some of these campaigns to get the youths actively involved. We would have loved to bring close to 100 youths or more to this kind of gathering and, hopefully, we will be able to do more in different parts of Nigeria.

Oluwafemi charged the youth to “see this as a call to duty, at a very young age, to dare to be different, to date to think critically, to not to see things the ordinary way people see things, to question everything and dig out facts and be informed, most informed about the choices we make, the choices of food, choices of lifestyle that we embark on because corporations are trying to turn us to robots that only respond and do what they make us think. They do that by sending certain signals to our brains and we react to those and ultimately those things affect our lives.”

Expert guests and facilitators at the event included In-Country Coordinator of the Global Health Advocacy Initiative, GHAI, Joy Amafa, Public Health Specialist, University College Hospital and University of Ibadan, Dr. Francis Fagbule and In-Country Coordinator of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, Michael Olaniyan, among others.

Amafa, a public health professional with experience overseeing public health programs for the United States Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in Nigeria, noted that GHAI supports civil society organisations that advocate for health policies to reduce deaths and diseases.

“Youth advocacy is an integral part of our work. As a matter of fact, recently it’s been gaining a lot of traction because as we all know, youths have the unique opportunity to make life-lasting impacts. A lot is going on around the world and I’m really excited that this youth vanguard is being launched. I’m really looking forward to what we will achieve, the impact we will make in Nigeria and beyond,” Amafa added.

Other participants included representatives of civil society organisations and youth groups, among others.

The inductees expressed satisfaction with the training and pledged to use the knowledge gained to promote healthy diets and lifestyle choices.

ThankGod Ochai, Deputy Coordinator, YALI Network Ekiti, said: “As a member of HFPYV, I’m committed to driving positive change in Nigeria’s food landscape.

“The two major things I’ve learned from the training are the impact of sugar consumption on public health and strategies for effective policy engagement and the role of youth in driving change.

“I intend to use the organisation I’m currently working with as a platform to collaborate with schools and promote healthy food choices. I also have a social media platform called Volunteer Compass on Facebook, which I will use to raise awareness about the impact of sugar consumption on public health through campaigns.”

Daniel Ibikitan, Teens Leadership Coach/Monitoring and Evaluation expert, said he gained “a comprehensive understanding of the prevalence and impact of diet-related diseases in Nigeria among young people. This includes the rising rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases linked to poor dietary habits.

“The training highlighted the role of processed and ultra-processed foods in contributing to poor health outcomes. These foods are often high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats, leading to increased risks of chronic diseases.

“I plan to initiate and participate in campaigns to raise awareness about the health risks associated with poor diets and the benefits of healthy eating. Using social media, community workshops, and school programs, we can educate the public on making healthier food choices.”

Ibikitan identified schools as an excellent platform for “promoting healthy diets among children. I plan to collaborate with schools to implement nutrition education programs and improve school meal standards.”

He added: “As a monitoring and evaluation officer, I believe that continuous monitoring and evaluation of implemented policies and programs are essential to assess their effectiveness and make necessary adjustments. I will advocate for the establishment of systems to track progress and impact.

Oluwaseyi Ademo Olayemi, a researcher and youth development advocate from Osun State said: “I learnt about food justice and why it is important that everyone is able to eat healthily. It is believed that access to healthy food will improve the general well-being and strength of young people to demand for good governance.

“I was also able to broaden my knowledge of why the government must increase the Sugar-Sweetened Beverages (SSB) tax to reduce people’s access to it. Habitual consumption of SSBs by Nigerians will only lead to an unhealthy population.

“Lastly, the digital advocacy session opened my eyes to the various ways through which social media can be used to advocate for a diseased free nation.”

Abia Insists On Treasury Single Account Amidst Opposition From Tertiary Institutions, MDAs

To block leakages in the collections and management of public funds, the Abia State Government has insisted that keying into the Treasury Single Account TSA, remains the only option open to all Ministries, Extra- Ministerial Agencies and the State own tertiary Institutions, to enjoy the support of the Government in their operations.

This is even as the State Ministry for Environment, has announced the immediate suspension of the activities of all revenue collection agents and other related service providers under its bait.

At a workshop organized jointly by the office of the State, Board of Internal Revenue, BIR, and her office for major stakeholders in Umuahia the state capital on Friday, July 5, Abia State Accountant General Njum Onyemenam said approval of expenditures of any type within the system will be determined by the compliance of the entities involved with the demands and dictates of the TSA.

The Source reports that most extra Ministerial Departments, and Tertiary Institutions in the State, have been voicing their opposition to the policy .

The Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities, ASUU, of the state owned University in Uturu, has listed the insistence for the institution to migrate to the TSA as one its major areas of disagreement with the state Government.

The ASUU-ABSUTH branch said apart from the system being against the interests of the University workforce, it is also not in consonance with the autonomous status of the system.

But the State Accountant General maintained that the TSA, was conceptualized to enthrone a regime of transparency and accountability in the management of public funds.

Onyemenam highlighted that Ministries , MDAs and others ,will have a seamless funding procedure ,with their migration to the TSA system.

This is just as the Executive Chairman of the BIR, Professor Udochukwu Ogbonnaya, informed that all Government receipts must be channeled through the TSA for it to be legal .

He stated that all payments into the account must be made using bank transaction cards ,Point of Sales (POS), bank tellers, mobile App and/or any other recognized e-payment platforms.

It will be recalled that the Abia State Government had, in July last year, introduced the TSA citing among others the need to block leakages in the system as reason.

A statement issued by the Abia State Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Ogbonna, noted that its decision to suspend all revenue collection contractual agreements is to halt the activities of some illegal operators extorting unsuspecting residents and fleecing the State Government.

Consequently, the Ministry has directed all revenue collectors and other related service providers to report to the Ministry for verification and validation .

Martin Amaewhule - Rivers State New Speaker

By Ayodele Oni

The factional Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly, Victor Oko-Jumbo, has declared that the State Assembly is appealing the judgment delivered by the Court of Appeal on the jurisdiction of the State High Court to hear the matter on suit number PHC/1512/CS/2024, describing it as a miscarriage of justice.

Oko-Jumbo made this known on Friday at the sitting of the Assembly in Port Harcourt, saying that the House has directed its legal team to urgently proceed to the Supreme Court to challenge the ruling by the Appeal Court.

He pointed out that contrary to speculations, the Court of Appeal did not make any declaration that Martin Amaewhule and 24 others did not defect from the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress, (APC) neither did the Appeal Court also declare them as members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The Speaker emphasized that there cannot be two Houses of Assembly in Rivers State or in any State in Nigeria, adding that Amaewhule and his team in spite of all their pretences are no longer members of the Rivers State House of Assembly in line with the earlier declaration by the Rt. Hon. Ehie Edison which has not been vacated by any Court of competent jurisdiction.

“Once again, we, the legitimate Members of the RSHA hereby call on the Independent National Electoral Commission to promptly conduct a Bye Election to fill the vacant seats in the RSHA.

“We strongly urge the general public to ignore Martin Amaewhule and 24 others in their pretence that they are members of the RSHA”

Two bills, the Rivers State Transport Company Reform Bill 2024 and Rivers State Emergency Management Bill 2024 passed the first reading of the State House of Assembly.

“As a former leader of the opposition in Nigeria, I specially note the determination and courage that the Prime Minister demonstrated throughout his years in the opposition and as the leader of the Labour Party.

“The party’s ability to reform, mobilize, and position itself for victory after 14 years affirms the leadership qualities of Sir Starmer.

“I also congratulate the citizens and the government of the United Kingdom for being an abiding model of democracy.

UK’s Labour Party Victory Tonic For Nigeria’s LP in 2027 – Ogene

0

The Leader of the Labour Party Caucus of the House of Representatives,  Afam Victor Ogene, has said that recent victory by the opposition Labour Party in the United Kingdom, UK,  is a tonic for action for the Labour Party in Nigeria in the 2027 general elections.

He congratulated Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party in Britain, for his party’s victory over the outgoing UK’s Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak and his Conservative Party, in what has been described as the most emphatic election victory by any British political party this century.

The U.K.’s opposition Labour Party won a huge parliamentary majority in the country’s general election, unseating the incumbent Conservatives after 14 years in control. While the Labour Party got 412
seats, the incumbent Conservatives got 121.

The House of Representatives Labour leader said that this unblemished electoral victory by the Labour Party in the UK, was not only a victory for the opposition party in Britain, but that of all believers in democratic transparency and integrity of the electoral process.

In a statement in Awka, the Anambra State capital on Friday, July 5, the Labour Party lawmaker, said that the election “Tells vivid tales of hope for the opposition, competence and integrity of the electoral umpires in the UK, in a manner that elicits public confidence and trust in the electoral process.

He pointed out that “Unlike what was witnessed in Nigeria in the last general elections, the process in UK was free of glitches, as about 40 million voters took part, polls closed around 10 pm Thursday and by daybreak, the results were out; there was no judicial ambush, as immediate transition took place to the admiration of all lovers of democracy and free and fair elections,” he said.

Hon. Ogene, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Renewable Energy, said further: “If we must practice democracy, we must also love, copy and abide by the transparency and accountability of democratic institutions in nations of the world that allow the rule of law and democratic principles to thrive.

“In deed, one of the potent lessons of the British elections is the fact that, the concept of ‘snatch it, grab it, and run away with it,’ has no place in modern democratic practice.

“The UK’s electoral process stands in stark contrast to our recent experience in Nigeria. The smooth, swift, and transparent election in the UK is a shining example for our electoral umpires, INEC, to emulate. The British Labour Party’s victory inspires hope and optimism, demonstrating that positive change is possible when people come together with a unified objective.

“I urge the Nigerian Labour Party to draw inspiration from our British counterparts, close ranks, rally the people, and prepare to take the reins of power in 2027. Let us work together to build a better future for our nation, guided by the principles of democracy, transparency, and accountability.

“Congratulations once again to the British Labour Party on this historic victory!

Kenya Bloody Protest: Ruto Bows Again; Scraps First Lady Office

President William Ruto of Kenya has made more concessions to  protesters amidst the deadly protest that has rocked the east African country for close to a month.

The protest which was sparked by Ruto’s government’s plan to increase taxes in the country has lasted for three weeks, even as the protesters have promised to press on until President Ruto stepped down.

The Kenyan President had initially refused to sign the Tax Bill passed by the National Assembly as a way of placating the protesters who are angry over the difficult economic situation in the country.

The action taken so far by the government appears not  to be enough for the protesters to abandon their action, particularly, after scores of youths were killed by riot policemen.

The protesters are now demanding the resignation of President Ruto’s government in the face of the bloodshed that has rocked the country in a month.

Amidst the demand that he stepped down as the country’s president, Ruto on Friday took more decisive steps to appease the growing number of protesters who have sacked the capital , and other major cities in the country.

These includes, the scrapping of the budget for the offices of Kenya’s first and second ladies.

President Ruto said in a national broadcast today that his government has also dissolved 47 agencies,  apart from suspending non-essential travels for government officials.

“The number of  advisors in government” has been slashed “by 50% immediately,” he said.

“The operations of the office of the first lady, second lady and the wife of the prime cabinet will be removed,”  Ruto added.

He added that “all non-essential travel by state and public officers “is hereby suspended,” and “no state officer or public servant will participate in harambee.”

He said, “In keeping up with the austerity measures we promised, 47 State corporations with overlapping and duplicating functions to be dissolved and affected staff to be transferred to other ministries.”

For three straight weeks, protesters marched on the streets of Kenya, disrupting commercial activities, including marching on the parliament, chasing the country’s lawmakers away.

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The National Security Adviser NSA, Nuhu Ribadu, has reinstated the Federal Government commitment towards halting the spate of Kidnappings, abductions and other criminal activities rocking some parts of the country.

He assured that efforts are being made to properly secure ungoverned spaces within the political landscape of the country.

The ungoverned spaces, Ribadu noted, have been serving as breeding and recruitment centres for terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements making lives difficult for innocent Nigerians.

He spoke on Thursday July,4 at the formal hand over of 16 rescued kidnap victims to the Zamfara state Government in Abuja.

In a statement issued by Abu Michael, Head Strategic Communication, the NSA said that the Federal Government is working assiduously in concert with all relevant authorities to close up ungoverned spaces that have continued to provide hiding places for criminal elements.

The 16 victims handed over were rescued in two batches on June 27, in Shinkafi and Tsafe Local Councils of Zamfara state.

They are made up of eight males and eight females. They were abducted on April 22, from Zurmi and Gusau areas of Zamfara State, and were rescued by operatives of the National Counter Terrorism Centre NCTC of the office of the NSA.

Protest Against EFCC: NOA Mobilizes 4K Officers To Track Ring Leaders

Ola Olukayode - EFCC Chairman

By Ayodele Oni

The National Orientation Agency, (NOA) has announced readiness to collaborate with security agencies to track those behind the mass protest against the Economic, and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

To this end, the agency has issued directive to its offices nationwide to identify incident spots and individuals involve in the planned protest.

A statement by Paul Odenyi, Deputy Director, Press , NOA stated that
“As security Agencies warn against the planned protests around the country, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has activated its civil intelligence network, ordering its 812 offices around the country to identify incident spots and individuals nationwide involved in the planned protest.

This directive comes as the EFCC reported that certain individuals, especially those being investigated by the Commission, are mobilizing youths, including school children, to stage a nationwide protest against the government.

“Director General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, also urged parents and well-meaning Nigerians to advise their wards against getting involved in the planned protest.

“The promoters of the uprising seek to destabilize the country and cut short investigation into their nefarious activities.

“While directing the 4000 staff of the agency to work hard to provide support to security agencies to prevent a breakdown of law and order in the country, it says the government will continue to provide channels for citizens’ feedback on any government policies, programmes and activities.

“A group has been recruiting young Nigerians, including students, through social media to protest against the EFCC’s operational activities, particularly in enforcing cybercrime laws.”

The NOA DG noted that while the government respects citizens’ right to protest, evidence suggests that corrupt elements under investigation or prosecution are behind this plot, seeking to exploit the protest and threaten national peace and security.

NOA, therefore, urged Nigerians to report any suspicious movements or activities to the nearest EFCC office or law enforcement agency.

“Yahoo Boys” Steal $500m In 1yr- EFCC

Internet Fraudsters

A whopping $500 million was lost to cyber fraud in Nigeria last year, according to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Nigeria’s anti-corruption czar, Ola Olukoyede made this known on Thursday in Abuja.

The EFCC chairman made this known while speaking at the Global Peace Movement International awards on Thursday where he received  Man of the Year award.

The commission’s spokesman Dele Oyewale, made this known in a statement yesterday, saying the amount was lost due to the activities of internet fruad stars.

The magazine has stepped up its onslaught against internet fraudsters, predominantly youths in the country since Olukoyede was appointed as the agency’s boss by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The magazine also reported that the commission warned on Tuesday that some people are not happy with its operation, and were planning to protest at the agency’s offices across the country.

The EFCC has however warned those involved to desist from the plan.

Speaking on what the country lost to internet fraud, Olukoyede said the problem was one of the reasons why some foreign companies left the country, noting that some unscrupulous internet fraudsters hacked their accounts.

He said the development has affected Nigeria’s status in the international community.

He said also stated that the problem of corruption pervades all strata of Nigeria’s society.

Olukoyede said, “In 2022, we lost over $500 million in our economy to yahoo boys. The statistics are there. In the same year, about 71 international companies left Nigeria because they hacked their accounts.

“We can’t get credit cards in Nigeria because of our poor credit rating because of the activities of these cyber criminals. So, the best we can get is debit cards.

“Do you know that there are some international merchants that you cannot use Nigerian cards on their platforms? Display your green passport outside the country and see if they will not take you aside and search you thoroughly.”.

“We will do the mini; we will do the mega. If you don’t do the mini, the mini will become the mega. Some of these people stealing money in high places started from the local governments, they started as leaders of associations in schools, where they stole money and they did nothing to them and it became part of their lives.”
