Delta: How Honourable Joan Mrapkpor Was Kidnapped  From Inside Church

0
Honourable Joan Mrakpor

By Adesina Soyooye

On Tuesday, Honourable Joan Mrakpor went to Church to worship God and dedicate her activities in the new week to Him.

But Mrakpor, a former Member of the House of Representatives and a former Commissioner for Higher Education, Delta State, got a treatment that shakes the faith. She was kidnapped inside the Church in Asaba before the Priests and the Congregation while the Church Service was going.

Eye witness accounts said it was so sudden that nobody had the time to know how many the kidnappers were and/or how they came or the type of vehicle they came in. While the Service was going on, he said the Congregation heard an unusual noise, unusual movement and commotion. Before they could process the situation, gun shots followed  and everybody ran helter-skelter.

The gunmen went for their target, and in the process, killed a Police Personnel, apparently, attached to Honourable Mrakpor. Another Aide was critically shot and is hospitalised.

She recently stepped aside from her position as Commissioner to make way for her younger brother who is aspiring to the position of the Chairmanship seat of their Local Government Area.

The Church from where she was kidnapped is, ironically, close to the Headquarters of the Delta State Police Command.

The Spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, has confirmed the story and said the Police was on the trail of the hoodlums.

Nationwide Protest: Pressure Group Offers Emeka Anyaoku To Lead Dialogue

A Pressure Group, Anya -Ndi -Igbo, has offered International Diplomat, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, to lead a pressure group of detribalised Nigerians, to dialogue between the Federal Government and the Organizers of the looming Nationwide Protest Against Hunger and Hardship.

The Nationwide Protest, tagged #EndBadGovernance, promises to ground Nigeria for 10 days, beginning from August 1, 2024.

In what is seen by some people as a Fire Brigade approach, the Federal Government has been running helter-skelter, from pillar to post, in a bid to abort the protest. It has been meeting with State Governors, specifically, those of the ruling APC, high profile Traditional Rulers, and a number of Stakeholders to find a solution that would abort the protest.

In that panic mode, it has falsely accused a couple of innocent people, notably, Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 Presidential race, and Professor Pat Utomi, an LP chieftain, of being behind the protest. Both have strongly denied the allegation and threatened to end up in Court with Bayo Onanuga, a Presidential Spokesperson, who made the reckless allegation.

Obviously, the FG, in trying to abort the Protest genuinely fears a repeat of the #EndSARS protest which took a toll on human lives and Nigeria’s socio-economic situation.

While a number of groups, organisations and States have given the protest a wide berth, not a few others are intent on going ahead with it inspite of the assurances by President Bola Tinubu that his Government is honest in handling the bad situation in the country and would put things aright.

On Tuesday, the Inspector General of Police held a virtual meeting with some of those intent on the rights of Nigerians to protest – notably, two Senior Lawyers, Femi Falana and Olu Adegboruwa, both SANs, in a bid to reach an agreement on the modalities of the protest.

The Military, on the other hand has promised to deal with “trouble makers who are intent on destroying the country.”

However, the Anya-Ndi-Igbo Group has a different view and solution. In a statement it released on Tuesday, it advised that: “Rather than threatening to clamp down on beleaguered citizens who are only clamouring for a Nigeria where life is meaningful, the President and Commander-in- Chief should address citizens on the actualstate of the nation and what the Government is doing to address the perversive anomie.”

It also recommends that “a detribalised Pressure Group, led by Chief Emeka Anyaoku, whose credibility and patriotism are not in doubt, should be nominated to mediate between the Government and the groups of aggrieved Nigerians with a view to proffering workable and implementable solutions to the current crisis.”

Following, full text of the press statement.

THE NIGERIA THAT WORKS FOR ALL: PROTEST, DIALOGUE OR BOTH

“Nigeria is at a crossroads and there is palpable fear in all the nooks and crannies of the country. The anxiety has been heightened by the proposed country-wide protest tagged #EndBadGovernance, scheduled to run from August 1 to 10, 2024. More disconcerting is the seeming panic in government circles and threats of punitive action against the would-be protesters.

“To be sure, the act of protest is legitimate and a veritable feedback mechanism in a democracy, which affords the citizens the opportunity to express their dissatisfaction with government policies and actions. Through peaceful protests, aggrieved citizens are able to publicly voice their concerns and challenge acts of injustice, and by so doing, not only participate actively but also deepen the democratic process.

“So fundamental is the right to peaceful protest that it is enshrined in international human rights instruments, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and, indeed, the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

“It is also worth noting that Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution states that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government. Therefore, while it is the right of aggrieved citizens to protest peacefully, it is also the responsibility of government to give them maximum protection.

“While protests serve as a vital mechanism for holding leaders accountable and ensuring that their actions reflect the will and needs of the people, there is ample evidence that government’s manifest highhandedness and covert attempts to suppress such mass actions and popular ventilation of public grievances through intimidation, excessive use of force, or unjust legal actions always end up being counterproductive.

“The national imperative, therefore, is for both leaders and citizens to truthfully and sincerely examine the current state of affairs and agree on genuine actions for achieving security and implementing programs that give true meaning to the twin concepts of citizens’ welfare and well-being. It is a fact that without achieving the primary purpose of government, which is good governance, the accomplishment of any other purpose is impossible.

“Since those in authority have acknowledged that the welfare and well-being of the citizens have been challenged by government’s fiscal measures, there is need for restraint in dealing with citizens who are voicing their frustrations. Moreover, in a country where peace is historically tenuous, creating factions by fabricating accusations against individuals and nationalities is an ill-wind. We urge the security services to refrain from making bogus announcements of findings that suggest particular interests are fomenting trouble without providing evidence. Leadership is serious business; it should not be trivialized.

“Protests by their very nature are peaceful unless infiltrated and it is the responsibility of government to forestall such infiltration by identifying and arresting such malcontents who are the real enemies of the Nigerian state.

“In consideration of the foregoing, we make the following points as our contribution to dousing the current tension in the land, for consideration and implementation:

“1. Rather than threatening to clamp down on beleaguered citizens who are only clamouring for a Nigeria where life is meaningful, the President and Commander-in-Chief should address citizens on the actual state of the nation and what the government is doing to address the perversive anomie.

“2. The detribalized pressure group, the Patriots, led by Chief Emeka Anyaoku, whose credibility and patriotism are not in doubt, should be nominated to mediate between the Government and the groups of aggrieved Nigerians with a view to proffering workable and implementable solutions to the current crisis.

“3. If all entreaties fail and the planned protests must go on, then the security of the protesters and the sanctity of the protest must be guaranteed by all stakeholders, especially the security operatives.

“Anya-Ndi-Igbo believes in a Nigeria that works for all. Good governance should be a given and not something to fight for. Good governance is achievable.

“Long live Nigeria.

Planned Nationwide Protest: Court Restricts Organizers To Parks, Gardens

0
Court and Law

By Akinwale Kasali

As the August 1, 2024, Nationwide Protest gathers momentum, Justice Emmanuel Ogundare of the Lagos High Court has ordered that organizers of the proposed hunger protest in Lagos remain in confined locations all through the duration of their demonstration in the State.

It further mandated that the organizers and other residents of Lagos aiming to participate in the demonstration should converge and remain inside the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota and Peace Park, Ketu area of the State.

Aside from that, the Court ordered that the demonstrators would only be allowed to access the premises from 800am and leave at 6.00pm daily during the protest.

The Court  gave the restriction order on Tuesday following a preemptive exparte application filed the State Attorney -General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, seeking to maintain and secure public safety and prevent irreparable loss of lives and property in the state during the period of the protests.

Listed in the application as co-defendants are Adamma Ukpabi and Tosin Harsogba (for Active Citizens Group); Juwon Sanyaolu and Hassan Soweto (for Take it Back Movement); Persons unknown and Commissioner of Police, Lagos State.

While moving his application before the court, Pedro argued that as the Chief Law Officer of the State and having been privy to notices by different interests who are for and against the nationwide protest, there is the need to protect the critical infrastructures of the state and prevent an irreparable loss of lives and property as witnessed during the EndSARS protest in 2020.

Pedro maintained that the Police in the State do not have sufficient manpower to provide security support for the protesters who planned to protest in all the local government councils and public highways and other areas of public access in the State.

He further argued that there is a need to prevent the protest from being hijacked by hoodlums who are prepared to breach law and order and cause destruction in different locations in the State in the pretext of public protest against alleged bad governance.

According to Pedro, “In recognition of the citizens’ fundamental right to stage public protest against government policies and actions but prevent unlawful destruction of lives and properties in the process, the Lagos State Government has designated two public spaces and locations in the State where citizens can meet and converge to protest or express their displeasure against government. The locations are Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park, Ojota, Lagos State and Peace Park, Ketu, Lagos State.

“Public protest in all the local government councils and public highways as well as other areas of public access in the State for 10 days is a deliberate plan to shut down the State and if this is allowed it will amount to economic sabotage.

“An order of court is required in the circumstances so as to protect the fundamental rights of 1st to 5th Defendants/Respondents to protest and other residents opposed to the protest to go about their lawful without harassment, disturbance and destruction of public buildings/properties.”

After listening to his argument, Justice Ogundare granted all the reliefs sought in the application by the Lagos Attorney-General..

He held: AN ORDER OF PRE-EMPTIVE REMEDY by way of interim injunction is hereby granted restraining the 1st to 5th Defendants/Respondents whether by themselves, their agents, privies, servants or any other person(s) acting through them from converging and carrying out their proposed peaceful public protest, rallies, procession and meetings in Lagos State from the 1-10″ August 1-10, 2024 excerpt in the approved designated location for peaceful public protest, rallies and meetings, to wit: Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park, Ikorodu Road, Ojota, Lagos State and Peace Park Ketu Lagos from 8 .00 am to 6pm pending compliance with the pre-action protocol by the Claimant.

“AN ORDER OF PRE-EMPTIVE REMEDY by way of interim preservative order is hereby granted directing the 6th Defendant to protect the fundamental rights of the 1st to 5th Defendants/Respondents to freedom of association, peaceful public protest, procession and tallies in the approved designated location for peaceful public protest, rallies and meetings in Lagos State, To wit: Gani Fawehinm Freedom Park, Ikorodu Road Ojota, Lagos and Peace Park, Ketu Lagos from 8am to 6pm on August 1-10, 2024 pending compliance with the pre-action protocol by the Claimant.

“AN ORDER OF PRE-EMPTIVE REMEDY by way of interim preservative order is hereby granted directing the 6th Defendant to provide security support and traffic management support to the 1st to 5th Defendants at the approved designated location for their proposed peaceful public protest, rallies and meetings in Lagos State, To wit: Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park, Ikorodu Road, Ojota, Lagos State and Peace Park Ketu Lagos from 8am to 6pm on 1st -10% August, 2024 pending compliance with the pre-action protocol by the Claimant.

“An Order of substituted service of the Order of this Court in this matter, the Memorandum of Claim/Letter of Claim and all other pre action protocols documents on the 1st- 5th Defendants/Respondents by Newspaper publication in a National daily to wit: any other widely read newspaper and the service shall be deemed as good and sufficient service on the Defendants/Respondents.

Tinubu’s Lagos Technocrats In Government Cause Of Current Discontent In Nigeria –  Fmr SGF Lawal Asks Tinubu To Remove Them

0
Babachir Lawal and Bola Tinubu

By Ayodele Oni

A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal has accused President Bola Tinubu of filling his cabinet with technocrats from Lagos who lack knowledge of how Nigeria works.

He equally advised the President to immediately address the nation, outlining immediate and long-term measures out of the current economic quagmire, as one of the measures to nip the planned nationwide protests against his administration.

Lawal, in a statement on Tuesday, stated that the president should reshuffle the cabinet to include “a mix of technocrats and politicians.”

Calling for a mix of technocrats and politicians in the Cabinet, Lawal pointed out that politicians are more adept at communicating with the people and have more stake in the successes or failures of a government.

“These Lagos technocrats who now fill the MDAs lack knowledge of the workings of Nigeria. Majority of them are rude, inaccessible, clannish.”

The former SGF also told the President to purposefully address the excessive nepotism in this Government, noting that “the South West dominates this Government excessively and obnoxiously.’

He added that the current Senate leadership operates a dictatorship in which no dissent is tolerated.

“This is insidiously building an imperceptible revolt that might soon explode. For example, Senator Ndume was sincerely speaking truth to power when he said the president is unreachable.

“A slavish legislature is neither good for your long-term interests or that of the country at large.

“People are taking exceptions to these ways of handling contrary opinions in the polity.

“In the North, we have taken great exception to how you or people acting on your behalf maltreated, Nasiru, Ningi, Ndume and lately Dangote.

“Your very close associates are also busy meddling in the affairs of Senior traditional institutions in the North West, which we believe has the intended purpose of dismembering Northern political and social harmony and hegemony.

“In the South East, your fixation on Peter Obi and the unfair treatment of Igbo businesses in Lagos is unsettling.

“There is also no denying the fact that political crises in Rivers State would have been long settled had the President shown an inclination to resolve them.

“It is instructive that no individual or institution in the South West has suffered such unjust treatment.

“These kinds of situations are some of the triggers of the current discontents across the nation because they generate dispersed pockets of frustration and malcontents that eventually aggregate into a large whole resulting in bad blood against the person of the president and the government.”

He also declared that the military has blatantly ignored the fact that internal security is wholly the constitutional responsibility of the Nigerian Police Force, wondering why they have been warning against the planned protests.

IGP Holds Virtual Meeting, Lists Conditions For Nationwide Protest

Kayode Egbetokun - IGP

By Ayodele Oni

In compliance with request for virtual meeting over the planned nationwide protest, the Inspector General of Police, (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has held discussion with some of the planners of the event.

Part of the IGP charges to them is that they should avoid street procession and  liaise with respective State Police Commissioners.

A statement by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Police Spokesman, stated that “The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, on 30th July, 2024, held a constructive virtual meeting with Femi Falana (SAN), Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN) and other key members of the Take It Back Movement.

“This is in light of the planned nationwide protest as part of the Nigeria Police Force’s efforts aimed at ensuring the safety and security of all citizens while upholding the constitutional right to peaceful assembly.

“During the meeting, the IGP emphasized the importance of maintaining public order and safety during the planned protests.

“He acknowledged the group’s right to express their concerns through peaceful protests and reiterated the Police Force’s duty to facilitate such rights within the bounds of the law.

“To this end, the IGP has advised the Take It Back Movement, who have indicated their interest to protest, to engage with the respective State Police Commissioners to coordinate and plan the protests in a manner that ensures the safety of participants and the general public while pre-empting any security challenges and ensuring that the protests proceed peacefully.

“Additionally, the IGP strongly advised against unplanned open and unnecessary processions due to the potential dangers they pose.

“He stressed that organizing and coordinating with the Police and other security agencies are essential steps to mitigate risks, protect the rights of all citizens, and protect the well-being of all involved.

“The Inspector General of Police, while reiterating that the Force remains dedicated to protecting the rights of all citizens and ensuring that all public gatherings are conducted safely and securely, calls on stakeholders to work together to foster a peaceful and secure environment during the planned protests.”

Debt Judgement: NAMA Grounds Arik Air Aircraft

Arik Air

By Ayodele Oni

Arik Air’s Commercial activities have been put on hold following the decision by Nigerian Aviation Authority to ground its aircraft over a disputed $2.5 million debt.

According to the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA),  the action follows an order from the enforcement department of the FCT High Court, related to Arik’s $2.5 million debt to Atlas Petroleum International Ltd.

It stated that “On the 19th day of July, 2024, the Enforcement Department of the FCT High Court enforced an Order made by the Court regarding a debt of $2.5 million owed by Arik Airline to one  Atlas Petroleum International Ltd. by attacking their aircrafts.

“Arik was further given a notice of Public Auction of the planes by the Court which was slated to hold on the 26th day of July 2024 if they fail to pay the Judgment debt. All these were served on our agency and also on our Supervising Minister, the Minister of Aviation.

“The records show that on the 8th day of March, 2016, the Judgment Debtor (ARIK) appealed the decision of the High Court of Lagos State entering judgment against it to the Court of Appeal and on 30th September, 2021, the appeal was dismissed by the Court of Appeal in a unanimous decision with cost.

“Arik again appealed to the Supreme Court for leave to appeal the decision of the Court of Appeal, and on the 9th day of January, 2024, the Supreme Court, per Okoro, J.S.C., delivered its Ruling dismissing the Judgment Debtor’s application for leave to appeal.

“The Judgment Creditor registered the Judgment of the Lagos State High Court in The High Court of FCT and On the 26th day of June, 2024, Honorable Justice O. A. Adeniyi, then sitting in Court 8, Maitama, Abuja)  made an order after hearing Motion No: M/9785/2024 filed on  behalf of Atlas Petroleum attaching all the moveable properties belonging to the Judgment Debtor, including the Judgment Debtor’s aircraft with Registration No: B737-700/ 5N-MJF, B737-800/ 5N-MJQ, DASH8-Q400 and 5N-BKX in satisfaction of the judgment debt.

“Copies of the Order and Certificate of Judgment were also served on us and the Minister.

“We understand too that Arik has obtained an exparte order stopping further execution of the order, though we have not been formally served.

“In the circumstances, since the first execution took place by attacking the aircrafts, further execution by way of sale can be halted whilst the parties go back to court to resolve the issues.

“However, in order to preserve the subject matter of the present dispute which are the aircrafts in question (the res), which have already been attached, we have decided to comply with the effect of the Supreme Court order, by grounding the aircrafts (subject of dispute) so that they are not taken out of the jurisdiction of the court or tampered with in a way as to frustrate the Courts.

“Furthermore, the Minister, being a member of the Inner Bar himself understands the implication of the Supreme Court Order dismissing the motion for leave to appeal and will not risk his license as a legal practitioner or his privilege as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria by engaging in acts that will frustrate an order of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.”

“Your Anger Is Justified, But Protests Can Lead Us To Destruction” – Aare Musulumi Pleads

0
Surajudeen Adewuyi Muhammad - Aare Musulumi of Yorubas in Kano

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

“While our grievances are undoubtedly valid and our demand for effective governance is both justifiable and urgent ,we must contemplate whether prolonged protests alone will lead us to the enduring solutions we desperately seek”

The above were  the fatherly admonitions of the Aare Musulumi of Yoruba in Kano, Dr Surajudeen Adewuyi Muhammad, to the organizers of the August 1 nationwide protest on Tuesday July 30 2024.

In a statement he personally signed, the Aare urged the country’s youths to reconsider their strategy in the light of the looming danger that the planned protest may precipitate.

According to him, Nigeria stands at a critical juncture as the countdown begins towards the nationwide protests.

He noted that there is a swell of frustration among youths, echoing from every corner of the nation, all bearing testimony to their profound dissatisfaction with the current state of governance under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“This discontent is further compounded by a relentless economic downturn that has inflicted severe hardship on ordinary Nigerians, driving up the cost of living to unprecedented levels.

“However, while our grievances are undoubtedly valid, and demand for effective governance is both justifiable and urgent, we must contemplate whether prolonged protests alone will lead us to the enduring solutions we desperately seek,” Dr Muhammad stated.

He further emphasized that protests, though an undeniable reflection of public discontent and powerful call for a change, carry inherent risks capable of heightening tensions to even a perilous extremes.

“History bears witness to instances across Africa, where well-intentioned protests, initially peaceful in nature, tragically descended into chaos .

From Egypt’s Tahir Square to recent upheavals in the Sudan, these movements, though born out of noble intentions left in their tails monumental loss of lives and properties.

“Rather than solely relying on protests, we should embrace a strategy of constructive engagement. It is crucial we explore alternative channels towards the quest for substantive and sustainable change”, he pleaded.

The Aare Musulumi of Yoruba in Kano, also, tasked President Tinubu to take all necessary, but legitimate actions  to address the prevailing excruciating economic challenges facing the country.

He noted that “leaders must ensure that the voices of the people, and their aspirations must be the defining templates for governance at all levels in Nigeria”.

Dr Muhammad appealed to the people to give the Government more time to address their concerns,. He warned that rather than solving the problem, protest will aggravate the situation if hijacked by hoodlums.

The Aare insisted that fostering constructive  dialogue and proactive engagement will assist the country to navigate its present challenges.

Planned Nationwide Protest: Okiro Appeals To Organizers To Shelve Idea, Urges  Dialogue

0
Mike Okiro

By Akinwale Kasali

Mike Okiro, a former Inspector General of Police, has urged the organizers of the planned Nationwide Protest commencing on August 1 to shelve the idea.

Okiro, also, a former Chairman of the Police Service Commission, said it is wise and resonable for the organizers to engage the  Federal Government in a dialogue, and navigate the way forward in addressing the economic downturn of the nation which has had  adverse effect on the masses.

Okiro, who was, also, a former  Chairman of the  Police Service Commission, PSC, made this call during

an interview with the News Agency og Nigeria, NAN, on Tuesday in Abuja. He stressed that it was constitutional for  Nigerians to protest against bad governance and leadership, but engaging in a dialogue was the best way to go.

He added that there is no doubt that Nigerians were passing through some challenges but noted that  it is easier to destroy but difficult to rebuild.

“The situation we are in now did not come overnight; it came over a period of time. Can we rebuild in one year what has been destroyed over time?

“The problem with protest is that, no matter how the organisers will go about it, there is bound to be loss of lives, destruction of properties, and hardship.

“My advice to Nigerians, as much as they have the right to protest, is that they should allow the government some time to ameliorate the hardship.

“What we ought to do is to allow the government put structures in place to alleviate the suffering of the masses. Government should come up with policies that will help develop the country,” he said.

He said that the current government inherited some challenges and is working towards solving them.

He said that President Bola Tinubu is an achiever, adding that if given the time, he can turn things around.

“There is a saying that nothing good comes easy. The current government inherited some challenges and needed to take some harsh decisions to solve them.

“Let’s give the government some time to ease this suffering that Nigerians are going through. The protest, if started, may end in violence; it may be hijacked by hoodlums.

“Rather than lead to any positive outcome, the protest may aggravate the living conditions of the people,“ he said.

Okiro said that giving palliative measures to the people was not the solution to the economic challenges in the country.

He urged the government to invest more in the productive sector in order to create employment opportunities for the youth and earn foreign exchange for the country.

He advised the Federal Government to encourage local rice farmers to boost production rather than allow importation of the product.

He said that the continued importation of rice, beans, and wheat would stifle the country`s weak economy.

The Federal Government recently announced plans for duty-free importation of selected food commodities like rice, maize, and wheat.

The initiative aims to increase food supply and replenish the government`s strategic grain reserve.

INEC Set To Release Registered Voters For Edo, Ondo Governorship Election, Meets Observers

Mahmood Yakubu - INEC Chairman

By Ayodele Oni

With 52 days to the Edo State Governorship election, the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has  assured that final figures of new voters in the state and that of Ondo will be released this week.

Details of their distribution by gender, age, occupation and disability will also be provided.

Thereafter, the timetable for the collection of uncollected Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) from previous registration, and new registrants from the latest CVR, will be published.

INEC chairman, Prof Mahmoud Yakubu disclosed this on Tuesday during a meeting with Civil Societies Organizations, (CSOs) in Abuja.

Yakubu reiterated that the Commission reserves the right to revoke the accreditation of any individual Observer or Observer Group that violates Code of Conduct for election observation.

INEC boss reminded them of their obligation as observers to comply with the objectives of election observation and the Code of Conduct contained in the Commission’s rules of engagement for accredited election observers.

While reminding the CSOs to submit the list of their observers by uploading the required information, including photographs, to the dedicated portal, Prof Yakubu revealed that as at Monday 29th July 2024, 56 organisations have uploaded the details of 894 observers for the Edo State Governorship election representing 33.6% of the expected 2,660 observers.

The chairman  pointed out that the Commission is aware that some organisations have not only responded in good time, but have also requested for additional slots for observers to deploy across the two States.

“The Commission will consider such requests on a case-by-case basis depending on the organisation’s previous experience, size, capacity and record of compliance with the guidelines and code of conduct for election observation.”

He assured the CSOs of security in Edo and Ondo as the Commission will meet with the security agencies as early as Friday this week under the auspices of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).

“We are as concerned about the safety of candidates, agents and supporters as we are about the security of our own officials, observers, journalists, service providers and, above all, the voters.

“I am glad to report that we have recovered from the torrential rainfall that resulted in the severe flooding of our State Headquarters in Benin City two months ago.

“The damage to the physical infrastructure as well as movable and immovable facilities are being fixed or replaced.

“We have delivered additional Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines to Edo State for the training of election duty personnel as well as contingency for Election Day support.

“We have once again published the final list of candidates in compliance with the recent Court Order mandating the Commission to replace the running mate to the candidate of the Labour Party. The amended list is already published on our website.”

Secondus Fumes, Says President Tinubu Cannot Stop Planned Protest

0
Uche Secondus

By Akinwale Kasali

Uche Secondus, a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has told President Bola Tinubu to allow Nigerians express their feelings about his government, as they have the right to exercise their rights.

Secondus stated that the President lacks the moral authority to stop the planned #EndBadGovernance in Nigeria protest because he is the biggest beneficiary of protests.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser (Media), Ike Abonyi, in Abuja, on Tuesday, Secondus stated that he recalled that Tinubu, while in opposition, was a notable arrowhead in anti-government protests and wondered why he should be selfish on it this time.

He noted that citizens have a civic duty to save our dear country from collapse in the face of an unprecedented economic crisis and insecurity occasioned by perennial bad governance by all tiers of successive governments.

He further argued that the state of anomie in which we find ourselves today has incrementally worsened because the citizens failed in their duty to hold governments at all levels to account.

Secondus asserted that this has been the case because political leaders often use partisan, ethnic, and religious sentiments to either discourage protests when they are in government or encourage them when they are in opposition.

According to the former PDP helmsman, the planned #EndBadGovernanceProtest “is a non-partisan pan-Nigerian and altruistic engagement of the citizens aimed at addressing the malaise in our country.

“This protest should not be discouraged. Protests remain the most potent democratic platform through which the consciousness of nations can be aroused, and indeed, the consciousness of the leadership elite can be nudged and compelled to act rightly in the interest of citizens”.

He contended that the injunction in the Holy Bible, which says, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” applies to our situation as Nigerians.

“In essence, this is not the time to sweep issues under the carpet; it is the time to speak truth to power and awaken our collective conscience so that we can work together to build a better society.

He, therefore, called on all protesters to be organised and peaceful and shun all acts of violence. Also, governments at all levels and security agencies should provide the necessary security environment to ensure peace and order by international law and the Nigerian Constitution.
